Overall good teacher, fairly easy and helpful with homework. Some exam questions are combined homework problems in one, but is pretty fair.
are you crazy?NOT good...confuses the heck outta me.the tests are insane.he gives a little curve, but will teach you each step throughout the class and then on the test combine them.if you don't get it, he'll talk down to you "what's hard about t
pretty easy in my opinion, good lecturer, overall good.
class is fine, pretty cool guy, homework is easy, but tests are frickin hard. test is 10 times as tough as HW, combines many concepts in like a 8 problem test. nice guy though, helpful
unless you have no job, and no outside committments other than school your not gonna pass he is very nice, compared to the professor your're gonna have next term when you retake the class
I graduated in 1993, so it's been a while since I had this professor. I remember him extremely well. The class I took from him had a pre-req of 2 terms of calculus (ouch). About 25 people started...most had dropped out by second week. Only three finis
very hard math class, doesn't explain concepts well and tests are very hard, most people drop the class, i barely passed with a C
u gotta love the guy,but his tests are crazy (difficult), only 2 tests and one final
Overall a good teacher. His explanations are generally good, but if you do have a question he tends to make you feel a bit dumb about it. HW's count as test grade & he drops lowest test. Tests are fair, which does not mean they are easy. You will have to do a lot of outside work to do well.
His tests are really hard. He's a good teacher, but hes tests are long and role all concepts into one. It's difficult to finish when one problem can be a page long. He's willing to help out of class though. I failed it. Be careful.
I did not understand very much in lecture- but he was very helpful outside of class. I barely passed, but I went in for a lot of extra help during his office hours.
His lectures were for an audience who already knew business calculus. He didn't like to take to much time to answer questions in class, he encouraged you to see him outside of class. His exams were difficult. There would be only 8 questions, each problem long & complicated. I had to withdraw & am still searching for a good teacher to take it with.
he is a genius no doubt about it BUT he doesn't know that we are STUDENTS!! his exams r a culmination of 100 homework questions balled up into 3exam questions that have numerous parts to them good luck DO NOT TAKE THIS GUY

Don't take him! His tests contain questions on information he has not even taught. He expects you to read his mind on the quizzes. He has certain ways he wants you to solve equations, and trust me, your way is wrong. Aviod if at all possible, seriously.

His lectures are very clear and very easy to understand. He tries his best to "keep up" with students, although not as much as some other "good" math teachers at unf. The man is a genius and he talks and dresses like one. His tests must be based on the British system cuz they are all freakin hard. If you want to have a rich calculus course, take him. If you just want to pass with a nice grade, stay away.
Please! Do not take his class! No matter how hard you try, you are not going to do good, and that is a promise! Seems like he doesn't even want you to pass because he really doesn't care about his students. So many people drop out of his class. He does an OK job explaining in lecture, but his tests are so unfair, and so is he!
Tries hard but not very good.
Awful teacher.

found this teacher very easy, never went to class and got a B
If you take a math course with Dr. Bell you will learn the material or fail. If you're a slacker do not take him. If you want to learn something take his class but be prepared for a challenge. Passing a Dr. Bell course is a great feeling in the end because you know how hard you woked for your grade.
easy take him!
His test/quizzes are usually 5 to 10 problems which take up the entire time (which I found very challenging). Not that much homework. Make use of the TA’s office hours and you might pass. He doesn’t want to answer questions in class.
Lacks everyday functional skills, but a super amazing teacher and really entertaining lectures.
Amazing teacher, the best I have had here! Brilliant guy!
If you do the homework you should be ok being the quizzes come from the book. he seems to give more info than needed so you need to selective on the notes you take
Dr. Bell is a great guy and he does have a sense of humor. He does not take kindly to rude students so be warned. His lectures are great and I was able to take very clear notes. Quizzes are straight forward but tests are not. He is from the UK so the wording on some test questions might perplex the uninitiated. Above all he is a nice guy.
Smart. Nice. Knows his material well. But do not be deceived. His quizzes can be pretty doable, but his tests can really sting.
Without a doubt he is the worst instructor I have ever experienced. His tests are ridiculous and it is almost impossible to get partial credit for anything. Don't waste your time or money taking his class, trust me. This man is smart but he should not be teaching.
he is a funny guy, but his test are rediculous & gives absolutely no partial credit. even if you get the whole concept correct, but mess up on one mathematical computation you get a zero. i wouldnt recommend him unless you have alot of time to study arent taking other hard classes. not very helpful in his office, and in class lectures are useless
His quizes are easy if you do your Homework, which is not long. You might want to at least review material covered on the test to make sure you know your stuff. He explains everything very clearly and you are free to ask any questions. He is also easily accesible out of class and very helpful.
he's a pretty easy going guy. the class average was pretty low and nearly half the class dropped it. however, his lectures are clear and not hard to understand. he slows down if the class is having trouble. there are daily hw assignments due a week from when its assigned and he'll work them out for the class if you ask him to.
you will NOT pass. 3.5 gpa, to make sure I was prepared I studied 4 days prior to test day and night..test NOTHING like book problems,insta-fail from when you register.although completing hw assignment and semi-easy quizzes make you feel good, don't let it get to your head, judgement day comes when the test is given.
This professor was hard to understand and I spent most of my time confused and I took and passed Calculus already in high school. Note: He wears the same thing almost evry day :)
Talks and dresses like a genius. Hard tests and doesn't like to give partial credit.
This guy is not bad at all. Yah he's British so a little hard to understand but totally comprehensible, plus he writes everything on the board. Your grade basically comes from tests. I got an A without too much studying. Oh and he lets you use a sheet of notes on tests which is helpful.
This professor is good.
AWFUL......
Very good teacher. Explains everything very clearly and interesting.
Excellent professor, one of the best at UNF. Makes difficult math fun!
Dr. Bell is helpful but seemed to skip nuances that he takes off major points for.
Heda man!
I thought he was a tough professor, but you just have to put in a LOT of work and be sure to ask questions if needed. Very helpful in office hours, makes class mostly enjoyable. He knows his stuff too. If you want an easy class, this is not the one, but you will learn a lot from him. His tests are on the hard side, though. Great professor.
I thought he was great. His exams were straightforward, he has a good grading system that allows you to drop your lowest grade, and he was funny. Highly recommended.
I am not good at math, so I figured taking a class that wasn't straight up algebra would be good. With this class and this professor, man was I wrong. You have to do things his way, and if you ask him a question, he doesn't explain it well (or at all) and he simply says "you might have to think about it more later". Bad choice, NEVER AGAIN.
I would take him again, although i doubt he is for every body. I understood calculus very well for having nearly failed precal, so he teaches well. The grading system is simple too, just homework and tests. Lets you use a formula sheet for tests. Only downside is he is a little out there, but i recommend him.
This professor is one of the hardest professors EVER! But you can pass if you really focus. He taught us 2-3 CHAPTERS and then gave a test with about 6 questions on it! HW equaled a test grade... DO YOUR HW, that grade can be the difference between you passing or failing at the end.. it really helps! TRUST ME!!
Good professor but extremely difficult. Study your homework and your notes everyday.
I feel like he poorly prepares his lectures. Sometimes it's like he's trying to remember the course as he's teaching it to us. And he seems like he has difficulty reading confusion. And he seems like he's a bit irritated when you don't get something. (He'll squint at you as you ask your question.)
Dr. Bell is a super nice, witty and brilliant man. I took him for both Calc I and Calc II and have no regrets. Fair warning though, the content of the course is quite rigorous and he has a wee bit of trouble explaining difficult concepts. You will do well with him if you submerge yourself in his office hours.
I loved the class, it was difficult but its calculus. Do the homework and ask questions if you have problems he will help you as much as possible. I thought it was impossible to make Calculus fun but he managed to do it. I would recommend him to anyone interested in taking any math course.
Very disorganized in his presentation of course material. This makes it extremely difficult to follow along. I am a very strong student, and this is the first course I have ever had to withdraw from due to incapability to learn the material. I will not be taking another course with him.
Mr. Bell seems like a nice guy. That being said, don't take his class. I had absolutely no idea what he was talking about. Ever. I had to switch to a different professor after the first two weeks. He sort of mumbles things and scribbles things on the board. He wears the same clothes every day. Answers to questions leave you more confused than ever.
Not very clear. Teaches like you are already a professional mathematician. All over the board. Tests are short and are nothing like the homework or test reviews.
Mr. Bell is a nice guy, but I would not take him again. He gives surprise quizzes (not that many tho) which are normally hard. I will probably get an A, but I had to put more effort than I'm used into the class. I would not recommend.
Denis Bell is an enigma. He is a VERY nice person and clearly wants all of his students to succeed. Sometimes he would go so in depth on the subject trying to explain some idea that he would introduce 5 irrelevant ones. He graded EXTREMELY hard during the semester but at the end he said if you do decent on the final you pass? I loved this guy.
I know we tend to look at the positive things from each professor, but I'm warning you now. DO NOT take his courses. My calculus class had a 70% withdrawl rate. His exams don't match AT ALL what he teaches in the class. In Bell's class, I got a 1% on one of my exams. That couldn't have been possible even if I tried.
Professor Bells lectures are extremely hard to follow and end up more confusing then beneficial. He doesnt grade his own homework so if you have a question about it, he doesnt know why you got it wrong. I would not take another of his classes.
NEVER take Dr. Bell
Bell is a good professor who doesn't give too much homework. He knows what he is talking about and lectures well. He also interacts with the class and gives students a chance to work out problems in class.
Guys, dont take him! I did not understand him one bit. He lost a few of my homeworks and told me if I wanted credit for them that I had to do them over again. Exams are difficult and majority of the time dont have the same material that was lectured on in class. When he tries to elaborate on things it just makes it worse. Never again!
Dr. Bell is clearly an intelligent man who has a deep understanding of math. I enjoyed the class. His exams are hard, though. Some professors will give you a study guide to help you prepare for exams -- Dr. Bell doesn't really do that. He does assign review problems from the textbook, but you won't know what concepts will appear on your test.
The way he grades the hw makes you feel like u are 100% prepared and a slight mistake will only set you back a 1%. This is not the same when it comes to test, he will dock points off that could cost you from 5 to 10% each mistake of the test compared to the 1% from hw. You can speak to him afterwarss that the grading was harsh but it barely budges.
Homework is great. Lectures are fine. Exams are terrible. This professor gives barely enough time to finish the exams. The exams are not really that difficult and the questions are what you would expect. Your biggest challenge with the exams will be finishing them in time. You are essentially being tested on how fast you can scribble.
This class is hard. Online lectures were hard to pay attention to, maybe in person is better. Gives you really hard questions for the test so you if you don't 100% understand everything it probably won't go well.
Easily one of the worst math professors I've ever had. Going to his lectures is a waste of time. He'll spend an entire class session going over theorems that would be better spent doing more example problems. You'll do very well on the homework but bomb the tests. Be prepared to teach yourself from the book. The math is easy, his tests are not.
Just started to take his class this semester for Calculus I. His online lecture recordings are jacked up and unorganized. Really hard to follow up with the class.
Professor Bell was great. Took him online for calc 1 and he had lectures twice a week that were recorded and later posted so attendance isnt necessary. Great teacher and is always willing to help. Only 3 exams including final and the exams are exactly what he teaches in lecture and on HW assignments. HW assignments are very reasonable as well
I would give him a zero if I could. Difficult homework as well has terrible lectors. He asked the class for feedback after we all failed his first test, the average was a 61; I personally emailed him. He messaged back basically calling me dumb and said it was all my fault that I'm not taking the initiative (while I spend 8-12 hours on his work)
Absolutely horrid lectures. He shows no enthusiasm and it honestly feels like he hates his job. He focuses on the wrong topics and isn't that good at explaining anything. Most people fail the test but do fine on the homework.
I worked full time and took ODE, Calc3, Chem2/Lab, & PhysCalc/Lab managed to hold a B+ until the final. Yes he can be difficult but it`s necessary for those who want a strong foundation, rather than padding your grade and giving false confidence. I showed up to almost every lecture and he is more than happy to answer any Q`s , would take him again!
Dr. Bell is very knowledgeable in his fields and really cares for his students. The homework was difficult but he was helpful in office hours. The tests were easier than the homework but still related so studying the material helped. Sometimes he would mess up and have to go back and fix things but overall lectures were smooth and easy to follow.
This professor is by far of the best ones I have had since freshman year. It's cause he is fair, not only do his lectures tell you everything you need to know but also is always there to email you back and understand your needs and situations. I do recommend his class the professor gives you all the tools you need to succeed in his class.
yea.. his lectures were bad
Dr. Bell is an exceptional teacher and I would choose him again if I had the chance. He's prepared for every class and is very helpful in office hours. How I got an A: attend EVERY lecture, ask questions. Do every HW assignment, mark ?s you struggled with. The week before the exam: look back at your HW, redo ?'s, and invest time in your crib sheet.
Lectures were straight to the point and connected topics efficiently. Accessible outside of class and always answers emails. Will make time to pop into a zoom call with you to help you with a problem. Helped me understand a lot of the topics in the course that are difficult to understand. Great professor. Would take again.
Professor Bell is very knowledgeable in mathematics. I have never been a math person, but Professor Bell helped me realize that it's not bad if you are able to clearly understand what you're doing. Professor Bell had two different grading styles that were both test heavy. Professor Bell also offered extra credit if you attended tutoring sessions.
I had this course as one of my required classes. Professor Bell was very cooperative and very understanding with student's issues, and gives many opportunities for make up work and extra credit. Overall, an amazing professor, and the lectures are good.
Firstly, he gives homework from a textbook thats $100. He records his lectures but they are SO BAD (laggy and unorganized). Two homeworks due each week, average on our first exam was a 38% and he would not curve or fix it while the exams are 80% of your grade and theres only two exams total! I withdrew.
I personally felt like it was hard to keep up with Prof Bell. Sweet and very friendly to his students, but just felt like he skipped a lot of steps for math problems. Now maybe it was just the level of material, but I often found it hard to keep up or understand why he'd get a certain answer. He does take attendance, and homework due twice a week.
Professor Denis should never teach online. The material was taught in such a vague way, yet the lectures still lasted 2+ hours. I had to teach myself through YouTube the entire semester. Lacks understanding of Canvas. Never knew the process of grading, and his TA never graded; when she did, there was little to no feedback or markings. Just ew. 0/5
Extremely unorganized, making it difficult to follow. It is an online class so lectures were recorded but never posted. The questions on the tests would be so far in level from those we would practice. There are no notes! the professor just writes on pieces of paper during the glitchy live streams and you never see them again. I do not recommend.
Professor Bell is very caring and will answer any questions or emails outside of class in a timely manner. He is very helpful and will thoroughly work out any problems you are having trouble with and provides practice review problems before every exam. I would definitely take Professor Bell again.
Do not take an online class with this professor. He screenshares a window that shows him writing on paper and the lag makes things soooooo confusing
This professor was always willing to help, even staying after lecture hours on several occasions to work more problems. He genuinely wants his students to succeed. Homework assignments and the review he gives are adequate preparation for exams.
This guy teaches ODE like we already know engineering or it focus more on engineering course. He did not follow the procedure of teaching what needed in ODE besides engineering content. He might as well be a engineering professor
Save yourself the headache. Extremely unorganized, doesn't know how to answer questions, and struggles with online learning tools like Canvas, despite the class being 100% online. Exams are 90% of your grade. 10% is hw, but if you miss enough classes, your grade will go down. Average exam grades were in the 60s. Watch Prof. Leonard to survive.
On the older side and doesn't really know canvas, will assign the wrong HW problems be careful. Exams can be tough but he gives practice problems. He might make you mad through canvas but you can pass for sure, just stay on top of your work and study for exams.
I had an 80 before the final exam. It was 2 hrs and prob the worst 2 hrs of any exam. 3 exams are 90 percent of your grade. If not for the equation sheet I would have failed that exam no question. Insanely hard final. Physics II was a cakewalk compared to that class
Take any other option!! Even if the teacher is rated bad it will be better because this guy makes your grade based on 3 tests alone. Had to teach myself everything. Lectures are a diagonal piece of paper he records and once he flips the page you'll never see it again. Doesn't teach but is the hardest grader I've had so far. I should be paid instead
