It was Drolet's first time teaching at OSU and he brought the big scary Chemistry down to an understandable level. He really related to his students and knew how to convey the concepts to a kindergartener. He loves his jokes and metaphors too. I recommend him.
I actually enjoyed his lectures. I took chem in high school and never paid attention because my teachers were boring. Drolet keeps you intrigued throughout the whole lecture and is extremely helpful in and outside of class.
Drolet is the best professor in the chem department. Teaches well in a funny way that all can understand. Speaks clearly and with enthusiasm. Helpful in the molehole.
Drolet is very good at explaining complex concepts in a simplistic manner. He rambles a bit, however, he is still an exceptional lecturer. The nature of the class makes it important that students attend the lecture and reading the textbook tends to universally boost grades. Drolet makes many analogies in his teaching style which I found effective.
Denis Drolet really seems to care about his students, he puts a lot of effort into making sure we understand the material and know what's on the test. He also advocates for his students a lot. He has the energy of a lumberjack father who is simultaneously a chem professor. That being said, it's a hard course no matter how hard Drolet works.
He's easily one of the best lecturers I've ever taken. Just enough humor and small stories mixed into the material to make class fun and enjoyable. He is straight forward when it comes to what material is important for the test. He really drives home the things you need to learn to be a successful scientist or medical professional. Best prof!
Professor Drolet makes learning chemistry much more fun. His lectures never fail to make me laugh and he's always open to questions. Sympathizes with students and works to understand them.
Drolet is a really great guy. I've ended up having him for the whole CH 23x series, and he seems to really care about his students. He understands that the material is difficult and does his best to try to provide helpful examples that will help you retain the material better. Sometimes there's a gap in information between lecture and recitation.
Best professor I've had at OSU! He makes chem lecture entertaining to go to, and explains the material in a way that actually makes sense. He really wants his students to succeed, so makes it clear what you need to do in order to do well on the exams. Would highly recommend taking his chem class if you have the chance!!
Love this guy. Really great lecturer, and delivers information without being boring. Nobody likes gen chem but he made coming to class worth while.
1) He looks like George Lucas 2)He seems like a sweet guy who genuinely wants the students to learn, but this class had a lot of issues bc of COVID. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt bc online class wasn't expected, but boy did the hw not align with the lecture materials. I would probably take from him again if I had to.
Drolet is in my opinion, one of the best general chem professors at OSU. He balances teaching concepts as well as giving specific examples through problems. More importantly, it is apparent that he sincerely cares about his students and their success. While online chem was difficult Drolet worked to give his students that best chance at success.
absolutely the worst of the worse because of covid-19 the class was online but man at least try to help the students the chem department enjoy seeing students suffer doing aleks somehow give them pleasure
I've been lucky enough to have Drolet for the entire CH 23x series at OSU and he is easily the best gen chem professor. He is able to describe tough concepts in a very simple, easy to understand way and really cares for his students and wants them to succeed.
Very caring, laid back and funny professor, good solid choice
A lot of things people were upset about, wasnt his fault. With COVID the profs werent allowed to lecture, and he actually explained that he tried to explain to the department heads that it would help us but they told him no. He tried his best to teach us where he could and he was also very friendly and able to teach difficult topics easily.
He's a super great guy. It was hard for him to help during class due to covid, but he was always excited to answer questions during office hours. It's a typical gen chem class that requires effort and reading, but he did a good job setting students up for success.
Overall, the chem department at OSU is very disappointing. Dr. Drolet is a pretty funny guy and seems to kinda care about his students, so he's above average. However, he refused to lecture in class more than a couple minutes + tends to talk a lot in office hours--making pandemic learning harder. But overall a nice guy, just expect to work hard.
An amazing professor and I would take any class from him. It's the Chemistry dept that's the issue and he will fight for his students. He explains the material pretty well and is very approachable in office hours. It's obvious he loves his job and the students, and he tried to make the best out of a bad teaching/learning situation because of Covid.
Denis is very funny and his lectures are always chill. Chem 231 is a hard class though and having a good group to work on the problem sets with is honestly more important than what prof you have. Study and start mastery chem assignments before they are due because they can take up to 3 hours.
Watch out for this professor. He doesn't teach his class at all, and dodges a lot of questions when asking him. He let's the TA's take charge of participation questions, and we go into groups all period without Drolet taking the time to explain how to go about the problem. The problem sets and homework questions are also much harder than the tests.
I can't say enough about Drolet. Amazing person and professor, and he is not at fault for the very poor decisions of the CH 23x teaching team and chemistry department. You will inevitably have frustrations with this class, but he cares so much about his students and I would take any class by him.
Dr. Drolet is the best instructor in the general chemistry series. He is very friendly and compassionate, gives great advice, and is always very helpful. He is always there to help whenever someone has a question.
Drolet is funny but can also come off as passive-aggressive to some. In the CH23X series, there are weekly quizzes, two midterms, and a final. There are many other opportunities to earn credit and go to office hours. In class you work on practice problems and for homework you have a weekly assignment and lecture videos/quizzes before each class.
Professor Drolet's class is tough because Chemistry 2 is tough. He is actually an awesome person. He wants to know what his students need and is willing to go the unusual route to help students get a good grade. All he wants is for you to really try. He goes go on random tangents and talks a lot but it becomes endearing after a while.
Dr. Drolet really cares about his students, and hes really helpful. The chemistry curriculum is really horrible and you have to teach yourself everything, but he really tries his best with what he has. I would 100% recommend him as a professor, and definitely would have him again if I could.
If you ask questions, you receive sincere efforts for help. He does not know the CH 324 course very well yet, but he is the only instructor who genuinely cares and makes you feel respected. Mr. Drolet, if you're reading this, thank you for making me feel respected!
Professor Drolet is hilarious, but he's also calm and caring. I'm not going to lie, this class is difficult. However, if you want to study science, you'll have to do it and I've heard things get easier later. Definitely take his class!
Professor Drolet is one of the better instructors in the CH 23x series. He usually goes overt the content in the videos. Very nice person and really helpful. This guy low key looks like George Lucas.
Took Drolet for Ch 231 and 232 in 2021-2022 year. In the intro washout chemistry class, (unless they change something) you will study and do homework outside of class and then come to class to do packets. I always appreciated that before packets he explained difficult subjects in depth before letting us loose. You shouldn't have too bad a time.
Would lecture throughout the beginning of class, wouldnt know what we had already learned through the textbook and videos and just confuse me and my friends even more. when i would ask for help he would just confuse me
If you plan on taking the chem 231 course, you have the right professor; ensure that you attend each lecture prepared by reading texts and watching videos. Drolet does not have a massive presence in this course, however when he does engage with students he is highly empathetic and humanizes you, despite the best efforts of the course.
I was very lucky to get Drolet for CH231, he is a gem. The class is definitely hard at times, especially with the way it is set up, but Drolet makes the best of it. In each class, he began by explaining the concepts in simpler terms which was really helpful, and the LA's were also very resourceful. If you can take him for the CH 23x series.
CH 23X series as a whole is awful no matter the professor. Read the textbook, pay attention to the online videos and take notes, you will be lost without them. Drolet is funny and takes the time to explain some of the material before class. Class is mandatory, but useless (just worksheets graded for participation). LAs are super helpful.
Ch231 has standardized curriculum and grading, so the difficulty will be the same across professors. However, if you're taking it, do so with Drolet. He's a great guy and answers questions well, and seems to clearly care about you doing well. The only criticism I have is that he doesn't read emails sent to him, but you likely wont need to email him
Drolet is an amazing lecturer and is honestly held back by the way the chem series is organized. The few times he is able to lecture, he explains it 100 times better than the videos they make you watch, he is very nice and passionate about his job. He doesn't make you feel dumb when you have questions and loves interacting with students.
Professor Drolet is very kind and you can tell he cares about how his students do. He does the best he can to make the course succeedable and acknowledges faults in the system. Definitely one of the best professors for general chemistry.
Very kind and knows what he is talking about. Everyone tries to get in his lectures and everybody loves him.
Drolet is definitely the best chem professor to take. He's actually fun to listen to and good at helping and giving preparatory explanations in class. The course is the same relatively regardless of professor, but he breaks things down in class in a better way than the other professors. I would definitely stick with his classes for the 23x series.
Hands down best chemistry professor in the entire department
I have had him for all of the general chemistry series and he is amazing. He is super kind and considerate. You can ask him as many questions as you want and he will gladly give you any answers that he has. Something I admire is his admittance to being human and making mistakes, not having a good day, etc. If you can, take his class.
Ch/23x series curriculum is all the same, but Drolet teaches it the best out of all the professors. He goes of his way to make the subject funny and relatable. This class is still really difficult, but Drolet really cares about his students, and wants you to succeed in the course. Take Drolet if you can, and the class will be far more enjoyable.
Professor Drolet is one of the best chemistry faculty here. He's a super honest guy and will always tell you what you need for exams. He's definitely a funny guy and he always gives great ways to better understand material in lecture. If you're a freshman taking the CH 23X series here I had him all three terms and I highly recommend.
He is an amazing professor, the department that runs the general chem series is the issue. This class is set up to make you do terrible, more than likely you'll fail your first midterm. I failed my first midterm and got D's on the final and second midterm and got a B in the class. But the only way to do that is by doing ALL THE WORK. Good luck.
Drolet is fantastic and cares deeply about his students
A very excellent professor, is caring and builds connection with students
Hard class, amazing faculty.
Drolet is amazing. He's a super nice dude who cares about his students and manages to be funny and warm. He's helpful, which is good because CH231 isn't easy, and he explains things well. I would give him a 10/5 if I could.
Gen chem series sucks, but Drolet is great. He's super down to earth and gives great lectures when he's allowed to. I slept through my final and he let me retake it same day. Great dude.
Super fun class! Actually made me interested in chemistry, and helped me understand the concepts.
Denis is exactly the kind of professor that I would want in any professor. He's funny and cares a lot about the students and is very respectful to both the students and the TA's.
Drolet is an amazing professor who makes Chemistry interesting and his class is a joy to be in.
Make every effort to take as many classes with Drolet as possible. Not only is he the funniest teacher I've ever had, he is so good at teaching his topics that there's no doubt you will get an A in his class. He is so unbelievably helpful, and the energy in his classes are so fun and never serious. I am actually excited to go to chem lecture.
He's awesome! Def would take again.
Drolet is the best chem teacher/ prof I have ever had. He is a huge yapper but hes pretty funny and his lectures are informative and interesting. He goes out of his way for his students which is a pretty awesome trait for a chem prof. Would recommend for gen chem!
Drolet is the best gen chem professor I've ever had. He is clear with instruction and is super kind and understanding when asking questions. He's funny and yaps a lot lol but it makes the lecture more interesting. He is very caring towards his students makes you feel welcomed. Great professor!
Denis explained concepts well and always filled his lectures with entertaining comments about sports and Iowa. He was also very helpful with explaining concepts outside of class. Overall a super chill, great guy who made it bearable to show up to Chemistry at 8:30 in the morning.
The setup of the gen chem series is horrific (you're meant to teach yourself, essentially, which made the tuition bill frustrating) but it's the same across all gen chem teachers, and if you're going to take the class, it should be with him. Very kind, very involved, very caring, loves what he does. I'd take him again & suffer through the structure
Best Chemistry professor in the entire department, hands down. Hilarious guy, always joking, and cares a lot about his students. I missed a midterm due to being out with Covid, he was very understanding and quick to help me catch up. There is a decent amount of homework but if you commit and *actually* do it, you'll pick up on Chemistry just fine.
The absolute man, helps students because he clearly cares and skillfully tells you how it is. Genuinely invested in helping you succeed and is incredibly real. Can't recommend him enough.
Even though chemistry was my favorite subject in high school, the teachers I had weren't the best - having Denis as my instructor was a very warm welcome. He's fun, energetic, and perhaps THE biggest draw to gen chem for first-years. I almost never had to use my textbook, either. If you can get a spot in his class, get it ASAP before it's filled.
Drolet is a good teacher that cares about all of his students. He is hilarious and I always enjoy CH231 lectures because he is my professor. However, his lectures don't help my understanding of material. The best resource you can use in this class is filling out the worksheet and asking the LA's for help when needed. Complete the weekly HW on time.
CH231 can be difficult but as long as you do not get behind you should be fine. Drolet was a good professor and answers questions, works with students who need help, and more. He cares about his teaching and seems passionate about it which cannot be said about all professors. I am taking CH232 with him next term.
Drolet is not only a compassionate professor, but a well-informed one as well. Teaching students while also maintaining their engagement is an incredibly hard task for most educators, but one he does quite well. If you ever have the pleasure of taking one of his classes, I highly recommend it!
Dude is for sure in my dream rotation lol. Took all three CH230 classes last year, and he was super understanding when I couldn't get stuff done due to personal issues. Super funny guy, and very engaging. Even though I was often confused, that not a him problem, im just slow. 10/10 guy. So enthusiastic even at 8am but I loved it.
This guy is so cool. You will have to do most of your learning outside of class. Along with the packets and mastering homework I recommend The Organic Chem Tutor. Fridays aren't mandatory attendance but class is open so if you're struggling go to that and office hours. He always pushes back the hw due dates and doesn't always take attendance.
Professor Drolet is very funny and super interesting to listen to. He does throughly explain heavy concepts in his lectures. There are packets and online homework to do, which is great for practice. My biggest recommendation is to stay on top of work in this course because it can feel overwhelming when you are behind.
Funny teacher, love how the class was taught.
He is really funny and makes you want to listen
Ch231 sucks at OSU. The professors aren't allowed to lecture (yes seriously) so you just get a packet to struggle on instead. The packet is incomprehensible unless you're retaking 231. Drolet is an excellent professor, he explains very well and makes it fun. If you're going to take 231, take it with Drolet. Ch231 HW is same for all sections.
Dr. Drolet is amazing. He really cares about you understanding. Lots of dad jokes and weird metaphors in lectures that are oddly helpful.
Gives dad energy. Lectures are actually helpful with his explanations and analogies he uses. Quick responses to emails and very nice!
A great guy always willing to help his students and walks around the classroom to answer questions students have he doesn't only leave it up to the TA.
I love drolet with all my heart. Legit best chem professor. He cares so much and actually wants you to understand, so if you ask a questions he'll stick with you until you understand. He's also so understanding about other things, so if you are sick and don't know if you'll make an assignment, he'll work with you on the due date.
Drolet is one of the best professors I've had. He cares about this students and about what he is teaching, he explains everything in a way that is understandable. I was skeptical about the flipped classroom (watching the videos online and then problems in class) but he made it enjoyable for this class.
Dr Drolet is a spectacular chemsitry professor. He knows a lot about the subject and explains it very well. When I had personal issues this term he made sure I was still able to get the work done. He is also a very funny guy. Definitely take his course if you get the chance.
The best professor! Although Ch 23x series is a difficult subject overall, Drolet was always willing to help his students. He was always positive and cheerful during class, whenever I asked for in depth questions about the material, he explained in a way that I understood but didn't make me feel like he "dumbed" it down.
Was in the honors section; it was just like the general section except no preclass quizzes or tophats and you could leave class after you signed the attendance sheet. Dr. Drolet is very understanding of student's lives. He wrote our midterms and finals (and gave partial credit) and gave the exams back. Canvas grade issues all term were frustrating.
The CH23X series is going to be somewhat difficult regardless of who you take it with but truly if you have the option to, take it with Drolet 100%. He is hilarious, kind, caring of his students, and always checking in with students to see if they need help, or to just see how they're doing. Stay on top of the Mastering homework and this is an A.
Drolet is my king. I had him for 231 and 233, and I absolutely loved his class. He explains things in a way that makes sense and doesn't rely on prior knowledge. I love his metaphors- I will always remember about oxygen being the greedy kid on the playground! He also does his best to get us out of class early which is fantastic
Drolet is an amazing teacher. His lectures are funny and actually interesting. He also tries to get the lecture portion of class done quickly so that students can get to work on their worksheets and get out of class a little early. I believe that he genuinely cares about his students, and I can't recommend his class enough.
Second term with him still a wonderful professor would highly recommend to anyone taking this class
Drolet is so funny and understanding. The general chemistry series is known as the "weed-out" classes for STEM majors, but Drolet truly wants to help his students make it through. He's super personable and if you take the EOP sections of his chemistry lecture, he's even cooler :)
Dr. Drolet has an incredible ability to make chemistry a very bearable class. Most of your notes are done online, but he does a great job of going over concepts in class and connecting them to real life. You will get out of this class what you put in, but Drolet is very caring and wants to see you do well. Hilarious guy, I will miss his class.
Drolet is definitely the best gen chem professor at OSU.
Explains things well. Jokes were kind of funny. I took AP chem so I knew most of this, but he was very good at re-teaching it.
The way Dr. Drolet explains the concepts is so helpful! He has perfected making hard concepts easy to understand through wit and great stories. I couldn't recommend this professor more.
Drolet is a funny guy who explains stuff well if you ask a question but doesn't really teach anything. Still by far the best gen chem prof at OSU, though. Sad I can't take 222 with him next term.
this class was so amazing and inspired me to switch my major to chem. drolet was able to explain things in a way that made me understand topics to an extent i never thought possible. he's super kind and his lectures are so interesting, i wouldn't have finished the class with 102% if i had a different professor.
This guy is the most exceptional chemistry professor I have ever met. In 2025, he received OSU's Loyd F. Carter Award for "Outstanding and Inspirational Teaching in Science." Denis makes chemistry fun! His lectures are hilarious, and his genuine passion for teaching chemistry is super apparent. His classes fill up first every term!
