His lecture style is not helpful in the least. His messy, unclear notes are projected, he is very quiet & doesn't work any problems out in class. He is a nice enough guy but one of the least enthusiastic profs I've ever had. The TA's would do a better job teaching the lectures. Read the text & take advantage of the cheat sheet he allows for tests.
Tough class! not GPA booster at all!
Very inept at lecturing. Slide shows/class materials are a MESS. Very skilled at making an interesting topic mundane and boring... If you are going to take astronomy, skip out on this prof.
Talks as if he is muttering to himself
The worst professor I have had instructing a class. Very poor lectures, the class is essentially divided up into him mumbling, watching astronomy youtube videos, and then using tophat. He is not well organized and does not address student questions.
Lectures were impossible to understand & disorganized, but if you have the textbook, all hw is online, & test material will be repurposed questions from assignments or from Mastering Astronomy quizzes online. I guarantee if you study the assignments and the online site using the text as a supplement, this will be the easiest A.
Lectures are a bit boring and lecture slides are a bit vague. I skipped out on most of them. Honestly, course is such an easy A if you read the textbook and do the assignments. All TopHat and test questions are straight out of the textbook, and the textbook itself is very useful in explaining concepts and easy to understand
Possibly the worst teacher/prof I have ever had in my life. Probably a nice guy at his core, but terrible as an instructor. Made errors in his notes and speaking points, mumbles, and notes aren't detailed. I love astronomy but he truly took all the fun out of what should be an interesting course.
Very bad professor, does not communicate material well during lectures. He gets easily distracted and does not answer questions during class. Essentially a usual lecture has him mumble for 1/3 of the time, watch bad quality youtube videos for another 1/3, and use tophat for the other 1/3 of class time. I don't recommend him, very poor instructor.
Mumbles, very quiet, doesn't take questions, confusing, disorganized lectures. Do not recommend. Stopped going to lectures after a 3 weeks. Get the textbook and do the online assignments.
I am honestly shocked by some students in my class; walking out loudly in lectures and more. Grow up. While I agree that his lectures aren't exactly inspirational... if you put in the time to go talk to him after the lectures he will help you. If you just try to pay attention to the slides and what he is saying you will learn a little
When I got into Dr. Leahy's class for the first time, I knew I'd have to study on my own. He made us buy Mastering Astronomy (Pearson) for homework (25%) and he said he was still debating whether to upload them. I was ready to drop the course. Then I could find all the homework online, midterm wasn't half bad and for the final he gave the questions
I really do hate science and I'm not good at it. I hate to say this because I'm sure the professor is a very kind person but he is just not good at doing lectures. He mumbled a lot, I went to 3 classes for the whole semester and just read the textbook to overcome this course. If you want 2% bonus, go to class.
Lectures are a little boring but a lot of external resources are used (Mastering Astronomy, YouTube videos, interactive figures).
Dr. Leahy is a great guy on a personal level. He cares about the material, he loves the science, he's fascinated by what he teaches. Except he's extremely socially awkward, very quiet, very monotone, and teaches in an awkward manner. Treat him with respect and show effort, and he doesn't mind if you skip every single one of his classes.
I literally showed up for 3 lectures and passed the class with an 85. He gives out the answers to the midterms and final before hand, so if you've got a good memory, its a super easy class.
Leahy wasn't a great prof overall, but he does care about how everyone does in his class. He is very awkward and doesn't talk very loudly, goes through notes very quickly sometimes and the textbook is a necessity. If you go through the textbook and make a formula sheet from it before tests you'll get an easy A.
Professor Denis is the image of a professor that is very much a researcher and not an educator. He is completely inept and lacks the grounding to understand how basic technology works; ex, his mircophone. And even if you could hear him it wouldn't matter since he's constantly mumbling. Not a GPA booster at all. Basic self-teaching skills required.
Such a great class to take. He is pretty awkward and bad with technology but he's easily the nicest and most approachable prof I've had. He actually cares about his students. Definitely my favourite prof.
Super nice and always shows up in a great mood! He may not be the most interesting person to listen to, but he definitely knows what he is talking about! He gives the questions to all of his exams before hand, and the homework assignments are very easy! Definitely one of my favourite professors, and he genuinely cares about how well his students do
Leahy is easily the nicest most caring professor I've had. He's not great with technology and I do find him mumbling into the microphone quite a bit, but he literally gives the questions to his exams over a week before, and the homework assignments are extremely easy. He actually cares about how his students do and he's always there to help.
Overall great teacher, and great class! Would definitely recommend to anyone!
Very easy class, he posts 80 questions online then chooses 40 of them for the exams. Assignments are long, but you can google every question and its all there. Lectures aren't mandatory to go to nothing extra is said and all the powerpoints are posted online after, they arent very enjoyable, because theres no enthusiasm, but they are interesting
Leahy is an awesome prof if you put the slightest amount of effort into engaging with his lecture material. He is a rather dry lecturer but clearly cares about his students and is passionate about the course material. Seems like a great guy overall.
Honestly the best grade booster if you take this class and this prof! All the assignments are online and he gives out all the questions to tests before hand. He truly cares about his students and if you take the time and go to his lectures you can actually learn something. Great prof and a great guy overall!
Awful prof! I skipped all the classes and just studied the book. Going to class is a waste of time. All the answers for assignments are online.
Dr. Leahy attempts to communicate content with enthusiasm, but this results in awkwardness and class silence most of the time. In the first lecture you could not find a seat (400 students filled the science theatre). By the last lecture, only 40 students remained in attendance. He gives students the questions to his tests, showing his carelessness.
I only went to one of his classes, it was filled with first years who didn't know they weren't in high school and talked all class which was annoying, to top it off he wasn't great with technology and a quiet speaker. Instead I learned online and got a 95% in the class it was easy but takes discipline. The prof seemed nice, just shouldn't teach.
Dr. Leahy in my opinion is a very caring, nice & understanding professor. Over the course of the semester, he has gradually changed his teaching style in order to fulfill students' requests and suggestions and became more confident. I like the fact that he tries to engage the students even if it might seem a bit awkward. I honestlylearned SO MUCH
I would not take a class with Leahy again. I took this course for my required science credit, and although the material might be straightforward, going to lectures with Leahy clouded my understanding of the material. He is extremely boring, and speaks extremely monotonously. After the first lecture, about 50-70 students out of 400 would show up.
Good prof. Show up and you'll get an A
Super easy course, Never showed up after 2nd lecture because he doesn't add anything to what's in the books. If you like basic astronomy and space in general this course is super easy A. He also gives you 80% of the questions that will appear on MT's and Finals, so if you memorize answers, you're guaranteed an 80%.
i like his class
very good professor, so nice.
Had to pay $60 just to access his assignments worth 30% of the course (not including text). His practice test questions were outdated compared to the information stated in the new required edition of the text which was a tad confusing. Made it seem like he put 0 effort into this class and relied solely on online resources (including test questions)
I don't know why everyone gives him such bad reviews. every other prof you have to work your butt off for an a (especially if you are like me with a 4.0 for med school) it is a nice to just have ONE course where you can enjoy it, easy A,less stress. the bad reviews for easy a options is why there's rarely any left at UofC. y'all playing yourselves.
It amazes me how hostile people are towards Dr. Leahy. No he is not a great orator but I mean the class is effectively an online course through Pearson so who cares. Like someone commented, you can sit back, do the assignments at your leisure, memorize the tests in advance and cruise to an easy A. Nothing more needs to be said than that.
Dr. Leahy is a great prof. He understands the stress that students go through, so he tries his best to make it an easy course. Assignments were kind of long, midterms were easy, and the final was long (100 mc ) but easy. I would 100% recommend taking this class!
This is an 'easy A' class. The exams are incredibly easy, and Dr. Leahy is really kind and approachable. I highly recommend ASTR 207 with Dr. Leahy. Don't buy the physical textbook, get the Mastering Astronomy access instead.
This is the best class at the university Of Calgary. Attendance is not mandatory at all. The class is pretty much an online class no need in showing up, he posts all his notes and practice tests online. He is just awesome!
Denis is a pretty bad professor, but he gives out exam questions and his assignments are easy, so you're pretty much guaranteed an A in his class
Taking Astr 207 with Leahy is a piece of cake, he gives you all the answers and all that's needed is memorization on your part. Didn't go to any classes except the first day, and textbook wasn't needed either. Just search up assignment answers on quizlet and memorize practice test questions for exams, easiest A ever.
He is an amazing professor! Made the class really entertaining. Took it in the spring and it was easy and I really enjoyed going to class! He is the kindest prof Ive personally met and is always available to answer any questions during and after lectures! I would highly recommend this professor not only for an easy A but also a fun time! :)
Great prof. Cares about your success in his course and is easily accessible. Easily approachable and a very nice guy. Provides a pool of exam questions well in advance. Easy A but his lectures are worth attending and interesting if you are willing to actually listen and try to learn something.
Amazing class. One of the easiest I have taken in my whole uni career. Use quizlet and testbank for assignments and tests. Gpa booster for sure. Interesting as well. if you dont do well in this class.. consider going back to high school or elementary.
I LOVE THIS PROF. This class is an easy A. Take this class if you need a science requirement!
A professor that speaks to quietly and that sometimes goes off on an unimportant tangent. A mediocre instructor at best.
Yikes ok... If you are a first year engineer, DO ANYTHING YOU CAN TO NOT HAVE THIS PROF. I would almost always skip his lectures to go to a prof I could understand. What is a already difficult course (259) becomes so much harder due to a prof that did NOTHING! when I did go, i sat at the front, AND COULDN'T HEAR HIM! Nice person, bad prof... :(
He just takes the lecture slides from other profs, mumbles confusedly about them, and calls it a lecture. He's even admitted to only reading the notes 5 minutes before the class started. His writing is illegible and he makes many mistakes. If you take phys 259 with him, you can still do well, but you'll need to spend lots of time teaching yourself.
Dr. Leahy is the sweetest kindest prof I've ever had. He is so chill and he will help you out when you need it! So understanding. He is an actual angel, he would bring in elaborate demos just to teach us concepts. As for the class, super easy all the answers are online, plus he provides questions before tests. I wish every class was like this tbh!
Hes nice, knows what hes talking about but doesnt know how to teach its like hes talking to himself. I thought he was good until 2 guest profs taught two different classes and I realized hes a good professor but bad teacher.
The absolute worst physics prof ever. Have never struggled through physics more in my entire life. Doesn't know how to convey solving methods or definitions and frequently makes mistakes showing steps to solve a problem. Spoke too quietly, could barely be heard at times and just overall a brutal professor to deal with. Seems nice but cannot teach!
The nicest guy ever! Class content is very engaging and Leahy is very helpful when students have questions. He also brings in models from time to time which are very helpful.
Dr. Leahy is great! lectures can be kind of slow but he's actually hilarious once you get to know him. makes me sad that people don't show up to this lecture. hes a good prof and doesn't make the class difficult! highly respect him
Really great prof, he is very passionate about what he teaches. It is an easy class and actually very interesting. The best university class I've taken.
Leahy is an okay prof. His lectures can be kind of dry but he gives you everything you need to do well. It is a shame that more people didn't keep coming to lectures because they got better over time.
Literally sky-rocket your way to an easy A with this course. Prof hands out test questions before tests, and most of the questions were from there. Assignments were easy. Need a course with very minimal effort to subdue your heavy school schedule, or just an easy elective? This is the course for you!
Amazing prof. Best I've ever had. Makes this class so easy and wants students to do well. Easiest A ever!! Definitely recommend taking this class. Really good GPA booster.
This guy is the nicest prof I have ever had. This class is 6th grade science on steroids so it's a nice bit of a brain break and can be pretty interesting. Great access to study materials and the assignments are simple and well spaced out. I'd recommend this course and prof to anyone!
His lectures are quite dry however this class is very easy and is memorization based so it is quite easy. He even will give you half the questions that will be on the midterms/exams so you just have to read a lot and memorize like everything, I personally never went to his lectures or read the notes he posted, I just memorized his questions
I never went to a class except for the two midterms and the final. He hands out practice questions and the majority of those will be on the test. The rest of the questions are taken from a test bank. If you look at those things a few days before the exam, you never have to try hard or show up to class to get an A.
Super easy class and for sure a GPA booster. You dont need to go to lectures but I felt bad not going because he was so nice lol. He gives some of the questions from the test beforehand and the rest of the questions are taken from the textbank. You just have to memorize those and you'll get 100%
Super nice prof, makes an effort through demonstrations and videos to help us understand. Lectures were easy to understand and he made the course material simple. Tests are super straightforward and he provides a bunch of practice questions beforehand.
Honestly went to like 3 lectures and did pretty good
Honestly, just do practice questions, no need to show up for this class. Leahy is very monotone when teaching and you will easy get bored. He is not suitable to teach. His class is a good GPA booster though. Most resources to study can be found online too. I recommend his class but you will only do well if you do lots pf practice questions
stopped going to lectures after first midterm and finished with an A- (best grade so far) exams are VERY easy, biggest GPA boost i've ever come across. do yourself a favour and take this class with him
Denis Leahy is a sweet man, but if you're looking for an engaging introductory astronomy course, this sadly isn't it. He goes extremely slow in lecture, most people stop going after the first midterm. However, if you read the textbook (online is best) and can memorize questions (most are online for tests) then this course should be an easy booster.
Leahy is a super nice prof and very accessible outside of class. He genuinely wants to make sure you do well in his course. He gives you half the test questions before hand so it's easy to pass. That being said, the actual lectures are so painful. He's all over the place and isn't at all interesting to listen to. Nice dude, bad prof.
Leahy is really great prof, and the course itself is very simple and easy. The only issue was his lectures got boring real quick and I would simply learn the material myself by just reading a chapter in the textbook. Great guy, very boring and monotone voice tho
Dr. Leahy is genuinely a nice man, but his lectures were extremely boring and hard to follow. I showed up to every lecture but felt as if I learned more from just reading the textbook. I found this class much more difficult compared to ASTR209, it is relatively easy to do well, but you have to put in a decent amount of effort.
Dr. Leahy is extremely boring and puts no thought or effort whatsoever into the class. The online final was incredibly difficult and poorly worded. ASTR 207 was the hardest option course I've ever had the displeasure of taking, and it is due to Dr. Leahy's poor delivery of the course. Avoid at all costs.
Don't bother with his lectures. Just read the textbook and you will do fine. Poor job with class communication, very brief announcements like 1 time a month with little info. Gives practice exams which have like half the actual questions which is great. Obviously a nice guy, just not a great professor. Take the course for a science option
Maybe in-person would have been better, but avoid taking his class online at ALL COSTS. Re-uploaded lectures from the spring, tests got progressively harder due to rewording questions--probably to avoid cheating but it made them incomprehensible and near impossible to understand. He also doesn't seem to know how to work the D2L grading system.
Absolutely terrible lecturer, watching paint dry would be more interesting than watching his recorded lectures. Thus, the class was entirely textbook dependent with lots of reading. Curved the quite difficult final exam and the curve was too high so he removed it and lied about it. Avoid!!
Honestly, I don't care about the other ratings of Denis before I enroll in ASTR 207. The final is one of the hardest 200level finals I have ever written. I understand the situation is different due to online classes. However, he shouldn't give us a hard final to work on, when the wording of the questions is unclear and confusing
Ridiculously unfair. He made the final obnoxiously difficult just because of the fact that it was online. The average was a 62.5%. If you think this is an easy class, think again.
This is not a GPA booster anymore. He purposely made this final very difficult as we weren't even allowed to go to our previous questions to check before submitting them and for some questions, he worded the questions in a way that didn't even make sense.
Online is brutal. Mid terms worth practically nothing were easy, but final worth half the course was ridiculously difficult. DO NOT TAKE ONLINE AS A GPA BOOSTER.
The assignments and midterms were easy if you studied. Lectures were boring and pre-recorded. But the FINAL. Yikes. Just because your class grades are too high does not mean you need to make the final impossible. My grade dropped 15% after the final. I understand you need to stop cheating, but this is totally unfair to students during a pandemic.
This might have been the most lack lustre effort Ive ever seen from a prof. He used recycled lectures, got his midterms from a test bank and used Pearson for assignments. The most effort he put in all semester was making the final incomprehensible and straight up unfair. Do not take this class online.
Do not take this class if possible, especially if you've been told its a GPA booster! Tests were incomprehensible, filled with mistakes and heavily weighted. And don't bother studying the lecture notes or practice tests, as the questions will be unrelated and unfair. Lectures were recycled from a previous semester and very poorly delivered.
Honestly, I was stoked for this class in the beginning. This has sadly turned out to be one of the classes I dreaded the most. This prof could not care less. Recycled material from the summer. And then decides to make a ridiculously hard final that you couldnt even decipher with google translate. Shame on you.
He put in absolutely zero effort into teaching or helping students, the lectures were recycled from the spring and were UNBEARABLE-- two hours of a monotone voice and extremely long pauses. The midterms and assignments were easy, but it seems he decided to make his class "harder" by making the final impossible to understand and worth 45%.
Took it as a GPA booster. Had A+ until the final exam worth 45% of the final grade. I understand those that have said he's a sweet guy but his lectures are unbearably boring and unnecessary. Final exam (mc) had questions that made no sense and answers that were repeated, the whole exam was a mess and had me question my existence at the end.
this prof is getting hate for no reason. Leahy is a GOAT. just because you didn't review the slides these haters got bent in the class. This was one of the easiest options i have taken in my 3 years at the university. YES THIS CLASS IS A GPA BOOSTER. all i did was review his slides and i went into the final with a 97 and got a 85 on Final.
Leahy has super monotone lectures and recycles everything: tests, assignments, & lectures. He attempted to prevent cheating on his final worth 45% by rewording the questions. Unfortunately, the exam did not make any sense because of the awkward wording. I studied before going into the exam and read the textbook. Scraped by with a 67% on the final.
Omg I love this prof... amazing lectures, great content and sometimes a little laughter ahaha. Tests were easy to prepare for and I never got caught off guard by any of the midterms or final. Passed the class with an A final was easier than expected. Easy A class definitely a good option for a gpa boost.
Every test wed taken he gave us test banks saying that he was taking questions from it, which he did, hence people saying this is an easy class. He said this for the final, then making it significantly harder than the previous tests and pulled little to none from the test bank. As someone who did fairly well on the final, it was a malicious move.
Leahy knows what he's talking about. This class was online and the final was worth 45%. If you studied, went over your pearson assignments, and did the practice test YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO GET AN A.
Lazy prof reused boring long lectures from previous semester, uses test banks for all tests, if you want to learn take this class with different prof. Got mad about high class average (but he gave us questions that were going to be on the test, telling us to study them) but too lazy to make his own questions so badly reworded test bank ones LOL
Oh Mr. Leahy you jokester, making everyone believe they passed but instead pulled the rug right out underneath them. If you're a fan of comedy please do sign up for this class. I expected this class to be text and heavy and instead it was the total opposite. The final was easier than expected. SO to the goat of goats, Dan LEEEEAAAHYYY!!!!!
The class started out easy as it should be because ASTR 207 is an introductory class. The assignments were straightforward and both the midterms were decent. I went into the final with a 96%. I came out of the final with 76%. For whatever reason Leahy decided to make the final harder than it needed to be. Plus he reused the spring's lectures. pain
The final for the fall 2020 term was a bit of a gong show. Thankfully, Dr. Leahy curved the final up 7% so I ended up with an A. I don't really see an issue with reusing lectures from past terms, I mean, would you not? Although I do agree that Dr. Leahy does not put much effort into this course, he is overall a nice person.
It was a little difficult to stay focused with his lectures at times, but he addressed the course material well. The assignments and tests are easy as long as you read the textbook, and the course itself was pretty interesting. Would recommend.
Lectures are mostly filled with hours of static silences which takes up unnecessary amounts of time from doing different tasks for other courses, provides the worst final exam ever made with poor grammar and improper writing, and to top it all off, he rarely responds to any emails.
Reused lectures from the spring. The final exam was a mess with unacceptable grammar and structure errors, and was made exponentially harder than the midterms. The most helpful review for this prof says easy A but the course average after the final was a C, think again. Seems like a nice guy, but he has clearly lost his motivation to teach.
Taught myself the whole course by textbook. I had a running A until the final, which was riddled with grammatical errors. His lectures were asynchronous and between 2-4 hours long, he was not engaging and talked incredibly slow. He barely responded to emails, and when he did they were one word non-specific answers. Worst course i've taken so far.
This is by far the worst professor I have had at this school. He is inaccessible and doesn't care to professionally or helpfully respond to emails. Uses entirely recycled course material and teaches through very slow, long, and unspecific lectures. I recommend just teaching yourself through the textbook chapters assigned. Grades from tests.
Take this class if you're trying to become a clown due to the amount of clownery in the class. Can't mark a test properly and has the most monotone voice that will put you to sleep. Avoid this class unless you like wasting money and losing your virginity to an option.
SPRING: Tough prof/class. Not very accesible outside of class, and it is clear this course is not his priority. Lectures are quite slow paced and slides are broad, but if you read the textbook you will do fine. The real issue is with the unwillingness to admit mistakes within his tests, and refusing to curve when the class is clearly struggling.
I attended the first few weeks of classes and didn't find his lectures very enjoyable, but he seems like a decent guy as evident by his willingness to reply to my emails and post lecture recordings on D2L. His tests were very fair and assignments required some reading of the textbook.
Get ready to teach yourself the entire course. Do not attend his lectures nor even look at his slides. Read the textbook and memorize the test banks as his entire test comes from quizlet / test banks online. Horrible prof, clearly has given up on teaching and he refuses to curves test where the average is a C. Wouldn't round my 84.96 to an 85. GL
Taught myself the entire course from test banks and the textbook. Assignments are behind a paywall that you have to pay, refuses to curve test where the class avg is a C, refuses to admit to mistakes as he gave us a question with no right answers on the final and refused to remove it. Waste of money, the material is easy itself but awful prof
Cons: 1. monotone = sleep 2. takes too many long pauses between words. It's hard to follow what he is trying to say. 3. I had to teach myself the whole course Pros: 4. some examples he provided in the lecture were helpful. 5. assignments are very helpful. 6. a lot of test questions were similar to assignment questions and online flashcards.
Puts zero effort into this course, you can tell he just doesnt wanna be there. you have to read the text to completion and sit through his horrible lectures, and he will put seemingly arbitrary facts on the tests. you CANNOT pass the tests without reading the textbook, this course should be an easy A, easy content, but a genuinely horrid prof.
Although it is hard to follow up with him, he is very caring in the sense that if you have questions, he is there for you. Attending his lectures are perfectly fine as long as you review the content before hand. He provides very good examples that will help with understanding the content better during his lecture. Easy A class, just study.
Be ready to rely mostly on the textbook, his lectures are 100% useless. He doesn't finish all the content needed before a midterm, and sometimes includes questions on the midterm that we didn't cover. Think of a simple topic to understand, he'll make it even harder to understand by over-explaining it. Only take a class with him if you have to.
To put it short, he teaches like he's bored, or like the class is not his priority. He shows no real passion or effort into keeping students engaged, nor seems to care when 3/4 of the class has disappeared before the semester is over. Testing is frustrating and is not very keen on helping go over them to see where you went wrong.
bad, very bad
Doesn't really care about the class
Honestly an easy course for non-science majors as all you had to do was read the textbook and do mastering astronomy. Do not even bother going to lectures as they are a waste of time considering all he does is stare at the floor when he lectures, doesn't even acknowledge students. This probably explains why only 20/425 would attend lectures.
by the end of the semester there was 20/410 students showing up.i think that speaks for itself. random chapters would be added on without any mention of it in the syllabus. chapters that were said to not be on a test would be on a test. he would change the syllabus mid-sem. save yourself the trouble and just read the textbook
Like everyone else saying this, don't bother going to class. Usually first years take this class because they think it'll be easy and it's interesting, so don't feel afraid to not go to class for this class... 4 midterms, 6 assignments, professor does not care about rearranging answers for the assignments. Midterms are usually quizlet questions.
Not sure if I'd take another course with prof Leahy. While he was kind and demonstrated concepts through activities and examples, he tested word for word from the textbook. Going to class was pointless as he would spend half of it covering content that we wouldn't be tested on and rambling/mumbling for the rest of it. Not worth it unless required.
Dr. Leahy is a very nice individual but I believe he is not the best professor. His lectures are dreadfully boring and I believe the best way to do well in this class is to just read the textbook, or study online quizlets since he takes questions from them and the test bank. But overall, an easy class with a bad prof.
His lectures are very monotone and very hard to stay awake during them. I only went to 2 lectures throughout the whole semester and ended up with an A. Read all of the assigned textbook readings and study online quizlets, all his test questions are from the assignments, Pearson, and quizlets online.
I would avoid taking this class with Leahy. While there were some things I really liked about his lectures, like his demonstrations and helpful TopHat practice questions, it was taught in a way that was difficult to follow. The tests asked pretty basic but extremely specific questions from the textbook - you need to basically memorize the textbook.
I would only recommend taking this class if you don't mind forking out the money to memorize Quizlet questions. Despite reading all textbook chapters and watching all mind-numbing lectures, the questions on tests have NOTHING to do with the material. He copies and pastes Quizlet questions for his exams. Like, seriously????
Nice guy, tries his best but his lectures are a great tool for falling sleep, very hard to stay awake during such monotone lectures, experncie read textbook and your golden.
Dude should retire he sounds like he loses himself mid sentence.
He needs to retire. Unless you read the textbook front to back, you are not passing. The lectures are unbearable, he mumbles more than anything and you cannot understand a thing. His assignments are easy (Google is your friend), but exams are very difficult. He seems like a really nice guy, but he just cannot teach.
Nice person, however it is clear that he struggles to teach. Is often hard to follow on lectures, and if you dont read the textbook front to back you will fail, overall avoid this course is not a GPA BOOSTER. VERY HARD TO LISTEN AND UNDERSTAND WHAT HE IS SAYING, as he just looks at the floor while lecturing
His lectures are boring and not needed. The textbook is clear enough to get by. The test and assignments I kid you not are word for word from the testbank. All the answers are on quizlet so its super easy to study. This class is designed for you to get an easy A.
His lectures are dry & you won't get much from them. It's a very "do it yourself" course, so make sure you read and take notes on the textbook. His tests are pretty much word for word from testbanks but if you can't memorize them then you better memorize the textbook.
His lectures are dry and will not help much with your exams. His exams are all questions from test banks, so if you can find the test banks and the quizlets and just study those you should be okay. But if you can't find them, get ready to read the entire textbook and teach yourself.
Grade is entirely exams and a couple assignments, lectures are super super boring and taken word for word from the textbook. Don't go to lecture, just memorize test bank and assignment questions.
Dr. Leahy gives us a lot of tests 4 in total and 6 assignment quizzes however all of the questions on the quizzes are easy to understand so it's not too difficult it's just quite test heavy. He is very accommodating in regards to things like deferred tests however I wrote two myself because of issues I was having. Overall good class
Hes pretty old school in the sense that the teaches this course textbook heavy, and puts hand written notes/calculations on the screen. Course material is fairly simple but the way he jumps from one topic or question to another confuses me for sure. Somewhat hard to hear his voice as he is older and does not seem to use any microphone system.
The way he explains topics is intuitive, but his voice and demeanor make you fall asleep, if you are prone to being bored/distractable I do not recomend this teacher.
Horrible course, especially with Leahy. By far one of the worst professors ever as he moves too quickly, summarizes whole chapters with 2 pictures and a few sentences and leaves you to read everything while keeping up with class—horrible professor and course. This course takes away valuable time to study for other classes as well. Stay away!
Take his courses if you are behind on sleep, because he will send you to dreamland.
While the lectures are dry, the class is manageable if you rely on the textbook and study tools like Unstuck study. Just memorize the test banks and you can ace this course.
This man has one skill, and if you think its teaching then I'm sorry to disappoint you because its not. He has the amazing ability to cure an insomniac with his dreadfully inaudible voice, and I think that should be studied. He could really help a lot of people.
Leahy is so monotone and does not give a crap about his students. On the final exam there was a multiple-choice question that had all wrong answers and he didn't bother taking it off the test...
Honestly, I know there are a lot of bad rating but this prof is really passionate about what he teaches and his lectures reflect that. He is so kind and understanding, even though my grade in this class didn't turn out to be great, he was really amazing. I hope he keeps on teaching what he loves as he does a wonderful job.
Very sweet and is truly very passionate about what he teaches.
Pay attention to the practice assignments! Very helpful to prepare for the midterms. My grade improved significantly the more practice I did. Attendance definitely not mandatory for this course as long as you view/understand the slides posted online- they're quite straight forward. Not an interesting course to me but kept my GPA up and wasn't hard.
This class was supposed to be an easy GPA booster, but it was my worst grade this semester. The professor just read off the slides, making it hard to stay engaged. The exams were heavy, but most of the answers were on Quizlet. The course felt unoriginal and uninspiring. Not an easy or enjoyable class, I'd recommend looking elsewhere.
Very quiet, and very poor at explaining. Basically not worth it to go to his classes if you are not adept with mathematics, the textbook has better explanations than him. Would prefer a teacher who was able to explain complicated subjects without stuttering, and can speak clearly.
The professor is very excited to teach his lectures and he's passionate. He uses top hat questions which helps everyone to participate.
I took this class as one of my science options and it works to fulfill it. He seems like a sweet guy & the presentations were entertaining (why I went to class), however the lectures aren't good because you don't learn anything. You're much better off taking notes & studying from the textbook. also do the assignments before the tests,it helps a lot
He has been doing this for like 50 years. Comes off as tired, and I feel bad he has to teach a first year class at his age. His classes were hard to follow, he talks quietly, but his lil quizes were helpful for the tests. I am awful at math and was scared to take this class, but memorize the text book with flash cards and you will do decent.
He's a bit hard to listen to, but hes clearly passionate about his subject. Read the textbook and do the quizlets and its an easy A.
Dr. Leahy is a kind person, but his teaching style is consistently unenthusiastic, and I found myself struggling to stay engaged with his lectures. I found more success teaching myself the material from the textbook / assignments than with lecture notes. If you struggle with attentiveness and memorization, reconsider taking ASTR 207 with this prof.
wasn't too bad but it takes time to get used to it. recommendation: read textbook and use quizlet to study for the tests, did great once i did. other than that, can be passionate during lectures but can't hear him at times so be wise with your time management and ur choice of seat lol.
