if you have to take philosophy, take this guy
Great teacher, very knowledgeable. Funny too.
He's a nice guy..but the class was less than exciting...
He is terrible.Don`t take him.
I got C+ on his first test... he is nice but his tests r hard.
His exams are very hard..but he is interesting..i got a b+..and i still think he is hard
Most amazing teacher I've ever had. Take him if you have any respect for yourself. He is simply amazing.
His lecture is very interesting and he is really nice, but his test is not easy. Only one paper for the semester!~
He's a funny guy.. tests are a little challanging but they were open book, so if you take good notes and can write them tiny in your book then you'll do fine
good teacher, very funny, has a great sense of humor, knows how to kept the class awake. some stuff are boring, but its philosophy. he is the one teacher who has ever made philosophy sort of interesting.
Sullie is the man! He is very interesting and does his best to interact the class with the material, as dry as it may be. You do have to work for your grade in his class-but it is worth every effort. He is a terrific professor
He is a great guy and a lot of fun. He wants to give A's. He gave me a make up midterm because I did poorly on the first. The tests are hard but managable. You have to take philosophy so take it with him!!!
hes very interesting but his tests are hard!
Every time you open your mouth in his class youre automatically wrong;overall he is a good guy, really knows his stuff, you just have to have patience to read assignments;10 page paper's a b*tch, fairly hard tests;he'll never give you anything lower than a B
you gotta take philosophy no matter what so u might as well take it with this prof. he is funny and makes philosophy as interesting as it can get. =) his tests are hard but u be fine if u take notes and follow him in class
Excellent teacher. By far one of the best professors that SJU has. Take him if you have the opportunity to. He will make you life easy when it comes to philosophy. Takes pieces of Plato's Philosophical teachings and places in human talk. A+ Professor.
not a nice man very hard tests and makes you write a paper that is a conversation b/w 2 philosphers
He is nice, but difficult. He won't let you out of class early ever!! Try not to take him. His tests are hard!!
he's a horrible prof. he puts people on the spot, he announces bad grades in front of everyone and he gets his kicks by insulting students intelligence. his tests are hard and according to him u can't get an A on his paper, he'll investigate it. STAY AWAY
Sullivan is a good professor, only thing is that you must read, read, and do more reading. His test you will probably fail, but its usually the students fault.
He has one of the most interesting classes I have taken at SJU. The only problem is that his tests can be hard. you have to read a lot. His classes are always good, however.
tests are pretty difficult...but gives an easy paper that most people received a 120 on for 25% of your grade...find out who else took him and get the tests he gives exact same exams...
tests are straight from text, not hard but long - he works out a fair system with students cant finish. likes to go off on tangents. there are no barriers. he treats students like colleagues. he will put you on the spot if you dont pay attention.
Horrible! Dont take him! His tests r insane, everyone fails them with 20s n 30s, and he speeds thru his lessons and then gives tests the next day on practically the whole book. The entire class is alwayz lost. Take him if u dont mind gettin a C or D.
Very Interesting class, and a very cool professor. His exams are tough, but with the inflation devices, getting over a "B" is very possible. Make sure you read and take good notes. Very good professor.
Seems to really know what hes talking about but can get confusing unless you have alot of philo background. Very easy grader and little outside work other than reading. He does get condescending at times.
I hated this course in the beginning, but by the end i began to like it. Professor Sullivan is smart but he can be unclear at times but does kno da subject material well. Gives xtra credit as well. He can be condesending at times but he is a nice guy.
Decently easy since all the tests are directly from the notes, gives make up tests and an extra credit paper. The term paper is an easy assignment but as a professor, he's pretty unclear and very patronizing to his students.
F this guy
Knows his stuff and grades kind of hard. Write down everything his says and do the assignments. One of the best professors at SJU
Dr. Sullivan's one of the best. If you do the work, you learn the subject AND you'll get a good grade. A great professor for those who want to learn.
Great teacher overall. Had three essays to hand in. Difficult test, but not unfair with grades. Reccommended for those who are hard workers.
Please DO NOT take him, he is boring, and gives hard tests and is hard grader. The majority of the class gets 65 and lower. Very boring and hard.
A little confusing but interesting. Tests are multiple choice and 2 short answer and 1 essay. You can use books and write notes in them. I passed by having notes written in book. Great Guy.
I failed his class so I had to take it twice. But, the first time I skipped half the classes and did no work. so, I deserved to fail. He is funny and entertaining and i would recommend him. Just don't forget to do the work.
this class sucked...i swear he was so confusing...i tried so hard, i went to his office for help and everything and he still failed me...he was not concerned that i was not getting the material, he had an "oh well" attitude...DONT TAKE HIM!
such a cute old man so nice and not a hard grader the course material is boring but he is a good profressor there are 3 5-page papers and then a midterm and a final nothing overly difficult tho definitely take him
This guy makes Philosophy more confusing than it already is. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!! Tests and classes are confusing. More than half the class can do terrible on a test and he won`t even curve it. So many people dropped his class..I should have too
sullivan is indeed very clear with the information at hand..the only problem is that its philosophy and its mind boggling at times..but he def. knows what he's talking about and you will too if you listen up. hes a VERY generous grader and an even nicer person
STUDY FOR THAT FINAL! ATTEND everyday. Hes a good teacher, talks a lil fast so LISTEN. He will help if you ask. He makes you write essays on the tests with specific details and understanding so you can get the full points. He can be rude but just suck it up its not that serious.
Great teacher. Very entertaining. This class was fun. He may seem like he's rambling but the man knows his stuff and you will be tested on what he says so take notes!Gives 2 tests and an cool project. He's an easy grader,an A is 80, read the books and pay attention. I loved this course I got an A :)
Dr. Sullivan is a great guy. Take detailed notes and READ the material he assigns and you will do fine. He makes Philosophy fun, so show up and pay attention. :)
Great teacher. Very interesting. will teach you about more than just theology. just do ALL the extra credit and try your best on quizes to get an A. Uses points so I didnt have to really take the final I just went in and answered one question correctly and I got an A!
this guy cant write tests. his classes are total b.s.. i dont get anything with what this guy is teaching, i had to drop.
he is a great professor, he let used the book on the tests. there is a makeup test, paper, and a final. but a lot of reading though, he isnt a tough grader. lets say a 75 is A for him.
Picks on people who he thinks don't know what they're doing so if you prepare for each class by bringing in the reading from e-reserves he will not botehr you. Open text exams. allows you to write notes in text. my advice TAKE GOOD NOTES and write them in text. I got an A, you can too
He's an easy grader, but you have to show him you do the work. Dr. Sullivan likes his own opinions, likes to spew them at you at 100mph, so when you write a paper, don't completely rufte a philosopher. You'll get a much better grade if you agree with him/her. P.S. He loves Anscombe, so if you don't agree with anything, at least agree with her.
Awesome Teacher. Makes the subject even more interesting. Must come prepared for every class and take good notes. o yea.....and study for that final!!!!
He's a cool professor don't get me wrong but he is very passionate about philosophy. Talks fast and his notes on the board are chicken scratch so if u thinking that will save u think again. U CANNOT SLEEP IN THIS CLASS every minute counts, if u want to pass don't take him if u aren't interested in philosophy.
maybe its jus me. the class is very interestin but i jus dont get it. the way he explains the text is mad confusin. maybe its jus me.
The best teacher I've had at St. John's. He isn't easy, and you can't walk in and get an A, but he makes you think and question everything which is what a college professor should do. He has a great sense of humor, and watching him try to get answers out of a basketball player who never did any work for the class was one of the funniest things.
This Professor is someone who seems as if he dedicated his whole life to studying philosophy. He is about 65 yrs old. At 1st i felt like i was lost. He goes too fast in class. If you understand or not the material in class, he doesnt really care about it as long as he rushes through it. Notes are terrible (impossible to understand handwriting).
Like the last couple ppl, this man truly devoted his life to philosophy and in the process failed to learn how to write. He's so longwinded and if you think by sitting in the back keeps you out of danger from getting called on, guess again. The man despises ppl who sit in the back. He's coming after you FIRST (no lie). Study Hard!!!
He is incredibly sweet and is concerned with students' progress, especially if you put effort into the course. There's 2 exams, 1 make up, 1 final and a 5 pp. paper. He's very into the subject matter and tries as much as he can to make a person understand. Work hard and get an A. You won't find anyone better.
He is the best professor at St.Johns, very energetic and enthusiastic about what he teaches. He gives a midterm which you can make up, a final and two 5-8 page papers. The papers are really hard but if you are a great writer you will get an A for it.You will do well on his exams if you read the articles(really hard to understand)that he assigns.
Sully is great. Real smart ass..calls on you and expects the answer. He makes u think and try to reall understand what he is teaching, which is what professors should do. Actually learned some things in this class. Take him..he's great
Sully is the man. Take notes...listen...and study you'll definetly get an A. And a another thing, come to class everyday, he notices and this will def. give u a upper hand.
One of the best at the school but not easy. You cannot skate in this class. You must pay attention and show up to every class or you will be lost. He's a passionate man and a wonderful tracher.
this man is a god ! take him if you get the chance iam taking him again ... the only problem is its hard to read his hand writing on the board just ask him and he will even question wha he wrote! :-)
Sully is a good guy. He really cares about what he's doing and he's a great teacher. If you can take his class, take it cos you're not going to find a better teacher. The class isn't easy but if you put in the effort you can do well.
Great professor. Not very easy once you get into the harder material later in the semester, but he knows what he is doing. Just read everything a few times, pay attention, and participate, and you're good for an A or B
He's a really funny and understanding guy. His tests are easy as long as you've paid attention in class and read the material. If you need help, just ask and he'll explain better. My class got onto tangents easily because we were mostly interested. Don't sleep during this class - you'll want to pay attention
Prof Sullivan is amazing. Great class very interesting. Tests are very difficult so study hard! Philosophy isnt my thing but I tried very hard and got a B+. Attendance is important. I defnitley reccomend taking him:)
Great Professor!!! He made class interesting for me. Do the reading and you will be fine and also study for the exams because if you dont you will fail them. He grades on a curve so the better you do the better for you!
This guy is mediocre. He teaches as if we know the stuff already and he is just reviewing. He writes on the board but neither he or the sudents can figure out what he wrote. He puts people on the spot and makes them look stupid if they don't know the answer. His tests are hard but the paper inflates your final grade. I got a B surprisingly.
the first phil class that i didnt sleep thru. excellent prof, yea his exams are hard, but what u except, its phil. he really makes u understand the topic at hand, he writes on the board, and participation is a plus (he calls on everyone)
Funny, focused, probably a reincarnation of Plato or something.
nice guy, very funny at times. but his tests are extremely hard, just make sure you write the answers inside the book, since you can use the book (plato, etc.) for the exams. extra credit paper boosts the grade though, so that's a +.
He was a good teacher, who knew what he was doing. do all of the readings. 2 8 page papers and 2 tests (midterm and final). Tough grader, but if you read the stuff, and listen in class, you should be good.
I bet the people who say he's a harsh grader usually sleep/doze off in his classes. He's a very fair grader and his tests = very fair. It's either you get it or you don't. You're a college student; everything can't be handed to you. He's the best prof I've had so far; he definitely knows his stuff and is open-minded and funny. would def take again.
Really funny, really nice. You can use your book on the tests so just take good notes and re-write them onto your book before the test, semi understand what was going on and you'll be good =)
He's one of the better professors. Though noone can read his handwriting, he's really helpful and interested in what he's teaching. If I had registered earlier, I would take him again
Great guy. He tries to be funny and wants his students to do well even though he realizes the material is difficult. Make sure you write the paper and know what you are talking about because this inflates your grade a lot. Good news for you, he is going to start using Power Point for notes.
I read the textbook on the commute to school. Showed up, answered questions, took tests, wrote the essay. Follow this procedure to get an A. If you read and answer 2 questions you will get an A.
Maybe he is a good prof for 1000 classes but for 2200 it is a quite difficult course. the tests are hard even though u can use the book but there is a curve on the exams. He is funny and the classes are interesting. a lil hard to follow at times but if you pay attention and kiss ass ull do fine
This guy is very interested in what he teaches but doesn't teach well, even though he's funny. It is impossible take notes b/c his handwriting is horrible and he doesn't make an attempt to improve it.The tests are way too hard-its all stupid memorization of quotes and all he teaches is plato-I didnt learn anything about ethical concepts-just quotes.
wouldn't recommend, especially for morning class....
Brilliant professor! Has a lot to say and can sometimes go on a rant but it's all relevant somehow. Just show up, take notes, highlight quotes from the book, do a decent job on the paper and you'll get an A. Everything that's on the exam is gone over in class, nothing tricky. He's also funny and time passes by quickly. Take him!!!
Interesting professor, great guy, would recommend taking his class, however you have to be careful. The texts that are used are absolutely mandatory to be read, as alot of his tests are simply pointing out which section of the book a particular quote is form. You are allowed to have the books for the tests, not too terrible.
he quizzed philosophy like an english teacher, basing a lot of questions on characters and who said what. i didn't like that one bit, quiz the philosophy. he did have some interesting stories to tell though
His class was a bit difficult (but that's also due to the fact it is philosophy). However, if you really work hard and study the texts you should be fine. He's also really funny. I'll be taking him again next semester.
great guy. really entertaining examples. horrible writing. used texts a lot so should buy. can use for texts though for exams. should go to class if you want to do well -its definitely worth waking up for. 3 exams. the one term paper is used to inflate grades. very clear grading policy. will respond to emails promptly and always willing to help.
Fantastic guy. Made me interested in philosophy and was super clear about what he was teaching. Exams were not easy, but if you knew what was going on you would do well. Take it if you want to learn.
Just write down everything he says and if you don't understand ask and if u still don't understand don't worry because no one does. The nice thing is that you can use your textbook during the tests. The papers are pretty hard.
He really want's the best grades possible for his students, and though his tests can get a bit tricky, he gives us an optional paper (which is the only paper in the class) which is used as a grade inflation, and coming from one who hates writing papers, this one was a breeze. Dr. Sullivan knows his material. Take him!
I had him last semester, and his classes were very interesting. Although philosophy can get rather difficult to comprehend, he still made it fun. He's very helpful if you go visit him in the office hours. Two five page papers, midterm and a final. Just take good notes and you'll be fine. He's a great professor!
One of the best phil teachers in the school. His insight into the course material is excellent and he uses clear and funny examples to prove a point. It is annoying when he puts you on the spot tho so just pay attention and don't say anything stupid. Tests are very fair and are based on his notes. Essays were not that bad if you attend every class.
He is an awesome guy, though I'll admit I was often the only person who understood what the heck he was talking about. Very funny (in a morbid sense sometimes) but he is an honestly kind person and will inflate your grades with an easy paper. Went to Rome through study abroad with him and couldn't have asked for a better professor
Dr. Sullivan is very intelligent when it comes to philosophy, but he's very dull and he tends to go off on tangents a lot. He likes to randomly call on people even when asking random questions before material is taught. He's a nice, funny guy but a really tough teacher. He's great in office hours though-- very helpful.
he gives some very obscure readings for the honors class. Also, that 7:30 class gets harder to attend towards the end of the semester. The great thing with him is that he will let you make up papers if you ask him. Just two papers all semester and 1 midterm and final. If you email your drafts early he will read it over and guide you.
Dennis is the most adorable old professor. He gives us open book tests so as long as you mark up the book you can't get below an 85. On top of that, he gives makeup tests in case you do perform poorly or get a grade you don't like. A must take for honors philosophy. He may ramble but nonetheless he's a great professor.
Terrible notes, cannot read handwriting. Talks on and on about nothing related to course but his own personal opinion. tests are impossible and papers are graded even worse
He is adorable and so funny!!!! He gives make up exams if you did not like your grade. The material is not so hard, however he gives his own opinion and it makes it a little confusing. Must take notes. But overall I loved his class and He was just excellent.
He seems like an intelligent man, but can be quite grating and pompous. Like so many professors, he never missed an opportunity to spew political rhetoric. The material for the course was frequently mind numbing, he really could have focused on more interesting topics. The man seems to think quite highly of himself, but should be avoided IMO.
He seems like an intelligent man, but can be quite grating and pompous. Like so many professors, he never missed an opportunity to spew political rhetoric. I found the material frequently mind numbing, he really could have focused on more interesting topics. The man seems to think quite highly of himself, but I wouldn't recommend his class.
Do the work and you'll get the grade you deserve. Pay attention in class and take notes. Listen to what he has to say about the topic. It will definitely help when writing papers and his midterm. Nice old man who's super excited about teaching the subject.Tries to engage you in the class discussion rather than just plain lecturing.Had him at 7:30a
Let me just say that if you are like many students who are not looking for a difficult core class, then this is not for you. Wish I would have dropped it. His notes I found were nearly useless except for when writing test essays. Try to avoid. If not, thorougly READ the Republic & look up sparksnotes! Nice guy but no thanks.
This class was difficult for no reason. He really makes no sense for the students, his notes are illegible, if you don't understand he doesn't clarify it for you. Whole class will fail a test and he won't curve it. He doesn't seem to mind that no one is understanding or passing his class. Do not take him.
Professor Sullivan wants you to get involved in class. If you raise objections with a clear argument he will love you. The material is fascinating and he is really passionate about it. He gives good grades easily, but you have to be somewhat intelligent in order to bring a strong argument....
I really really like him as a professor and a person. He's got some interesting stories about where he's been (usually resulting in some sort of injury) but he is very passionate about philosophy and very knowledgeable. His tests are rough if you don't read, but they're open notes in the books you read. I'd take him again in a second
This was the worst class I have ever taken. Impossibly hard for no reason. His lectures make no sense. He goes off on tangents & then never returns to his original topic. His notes are completely gibberish; hope that you're lucky enough to be able to decipher them. Midterm&final, both are impossible. Two papers. Don't take if you want to pass AWFUL
A great professor, you learn a lot about life. A great guy, too. He's super helpful and wants you to really learn and get a good grade in the class.
His lectures are a mess. He always goes off tangents and talks about nonsense. He literally read Plato's Dialogues to you and give you sloppy notes on the board. Notes that no one can read and you have to ask him constantly to translate. His tests are full of errors. Make sure you are taking notes from day oen in the book and your notebook.
You can not legibly read anything he writes for notes, and nothing really will ever make sense.. tests are extra difficult for no reason considering he is such a calm sweet old guy. Difficult to get an A, or a B even. Dont take unless you already know a lot about philosophy. Textbooks are needed!!
No test or quizzes until midterms or finals. Only two papers. The downfall is that there aren't any ways to make up your grade besides the midterm and final, so you have to put in work into your papers. Attend class and pay attention to his lectures, take notes and you should be fine
He knows what he's talking about but thinks we know the same so he just talks at us and expects us to know everything. His grading system is the stupidest thing ever! The whole semester I knew I was doing horribly but he always said I was doing well - final grade was a C which is far from well. Honestly, just stay away and don't take this class.
Had a good time in Dr. Sullivan's class. Really you just have to show up and take good notes to do well on papers and tests. The material is interesting but can be somewhat confusing at times. He is great at explaining things so you will come to understand the material pretty well. Would recommend.
He's a pretty average teacher. Nice guy but he makes his tests super confusing for no reason. Everything thats on the tests is taught in class so you cant skip class. If you are willing to put in work you can get an A
I found Dr. Sullivan inspiring. I am very glad I had him as a professor, as long as you put effort in and he sees that, class is a breeze.
Nothing special. Text books are required and will call you out during class and make you participate at random or when he feels.
this guys is the worst professor I've ever had. he makes absolute no sense in his lectures he answers your questions with a question and makes you even more confused than you originally were. very confusing grader. his handwriting is terrible and expects you to be able to read it and gets annoyed when you can't understand his notes. PLSE DONT TAKE
He's such a sweet old guy, but I hated and dreaded his class. He often goes off on tangents, whispers to himself when explaining stuff, terrible handwriting, and he confuses you even more when asking questions. I would answer his questions and he'll tell me I'm wrong, but when someone else rewords the same answer, he says they're right. DONT TAKE!
he made the class really easy for us. he explains everything we read in detail and goes over it a bunch of times, every test and the final is open book, one term paper that you get a 100 on if you hand it in, what more can you really ask for in a philosophy class. he's a hard grader but you can argue and get credit for your answers
He was a great professor, though at tough grader, he offers his office hours, and provides any help needed when in help!
We had two papers and a midterm and final. I din not do well on the midterm but he allowed a retake and my paper grades seemed to make up for it because I got an A at the end. As long as you take good notes you will do fine.
HE IS THE EASIEST AND BEST PHILOSOPHY PROFESSOR AT ST JOHNS. SUPER SUPER EASY A. You can't fail this class even if you try. He does expect you to come to class and calls on random people, but he's very cool, chill, and caring. No homework ever. 2 tests, one final. One paper which was SOOOO easy, 5 pages double spaced dialogue based on what we read.
the class itself is easy, but the tests can be hard if you aren't comfortable. we had 2 tests and a final. Nice guy, the grading system is good. I failed the first test with a 54, and that is the only grade we had for midterms and I had a b- in the class.. he curves the tests. tests are harder than they should be, you have to understand the topic.
He is honestly one of the best professors for philosophy in St. Johns. He tells you a word for word explanation of the material that will be on the exam, so there is no analyzing on your own. Three exams overall and one easy five page paper.
Dr. Sullivan is a great philosophy teacher. There are 3 exams, and one paper. Everything is worth 25%. All exams are open-booked, so write your notes in your book. The paper is used as a grade inflation device. Pay attention and you'll get an A.
He seemed like a nice old man at first, but he is a hard grader. His handwriting is absolutely HORRIBLE, he does not give good notes. His guidelines are vague when he assigns papers, and then criticizes you for not having what he wanted. His tests are also hard, he tells you things that will be on it, and then the test is completely different.
absolutely terrible, STAY AWAY!!! 3 Exams and One paper, all 25 percent, and the paper is an auto 100 if done correctly, YET the class is still hard.... handwriting is TERRIBLEEE, tests are HARD, he goes off topic all the time and forgets what we covered the prior class. STAY AWAY! Hes funny and cool guy, but come on.
My biggest complaint is that Professor Sullivan's handwriting resembles that of a 5-year-old. It's also left pretty unclear what will be on tests. But he is very open to being challenged and having philosophical discussions with his students. If people in your class participate, the discussions can be very entertaining. He is a nice and funny guy.
He makes no sense. Will talk about the same topic the entire semester and expect you to understand the test material. This class was a joke. Nobody did good.
Do not take this professor. Philosophy classes are mandatory but he grades as if you are philosophy major. Awful handwriting, and only writes the notes on the board so if you missed what he said, you're screwed. He constantly contradicts himself, and will give you promos and questions that make no sense. If you do not like philosophy,do not take.
He is a really nice and funny guy but he's a tough grader and his lectures do not make any sense. Maybe if he posted lectures and tested people on that would like his class more. This is the only class I've gotten a C in and lots of people in my class didn't do good. also the only reason I'm taking the class is because its a core.
He is a great guy, but do not take his class. He messed up his scantron answer key on EVERY test. My grade went up 21 points after he went back and regraded our first test. For the second test, my grade went up 6 points after he regraded it. I ultimately got an A, but it is not worth the stress of having a prof who cant even fill out a scantron.
This class was the hardest class ive taken at SJU so far. He doesnt teach well, he is all over the place with his lectures and he goes off topic ALL of the time. He is a very hard grader. The highest grade on one of the exams that we took was 69%. He barely gives exams as well so one bad grade will do the job to fail.
