She is extremely helpful, and lectures are interesting. She makes it very clear what she wants from you. The tests are not too difficult if you go to class and pay attention.
One of the best family studies teachers. Very funny, adds in a lot of stories from her own life. Enjoyed all of the classes I have taken with her. (At least 4).
Awesome Teacher.
She is, indubitably, one of the very finest professors I have ever studied under. After I graduate, I am going to take her courses for fun (as well as to learn, of course)! If you have the option to take any of her courses, then you should. You will learn

One of my all time favorite professors. She is the Best! She is not easy, but you will learn something.
She is hilarious! We spent most of the time in that class laughing at her stories. Her tests were not that difficult if you're prepared. We even took one test together as a class!
I've had her for quite a few classes and she is so funny! She really knows how to hold your attention and the stories she tells are great. I'm a family studies major so hopefully I get to take a lot more of her classes in the future.
I can't say enough about her! She's awesome! Her class is really easy and you won't even mind going to the lectures! She's hilarious and the things you learn are really interesting.
I have taken about 5 classes with this prof! She is the best prof I have ever had at ASU! I have never enjoyed going to a class as much as hers! Awesome awesome awesome you just have to go to class and its an easy A!
She was the best teacher I have ever had!!!So interesting and beautiful too!
She is one of the best professors I have ever had! She is hilarious and has a wonderful way of keeping the class's full attention every lecture. She's very willing to help, and her tests are not that bad at all. I look forward to taking more classes from her!!!
She is a great teacher. She is funny but also incredibly intelligent and helpful. Her tests were somewhat difficult but if you were in class and did your readings you should be fine. I really enjoyed this class.
This Professor is a good teacher. Her lectures are very fun. She makes jokes and keeps you interested. However, there is a lot of reading and the test can be hard. But, if you show up to class you should do fine :)
I have had Denise for FAS 330 and FAS 431 and I have to say that she is one the best teachers I have ever had. She pushs you to learn but the great thing about her classes is that you actually learn something.
BEST TEACHER EVER! i want to take every class ever with her. there is a bit of work but its fun and she makes you want to do it! bu far best class ever taken
In class assignments for attendance. Discussions are extremely interesting, she makes them fun and upbeat. Denise is a great teacher, willing to do anything we students have to do. Gives study guides for each test, and super helpful if you have any questions/issues. Definitely recommend taking her.
One of the most interesting classes I have taken at ASU. She is hilarious and makes her lectures fun. A lot of reading is involved to study for her exams but as long as you study you usually will do well on her tests. Deff take this class!!
Awesome teacher... very funny and professional at the same time. The class was easy as long as you went to class and read the books. The information was repetitive and not hard to learn, but it was necessary to know for the tests. 3 tiny papers, which were easy, and 4 tests, including the final. The final was not cumulative.
She provides a good amount of help and you can tell she wants all her students to succeed. All you need to do is pay attention and do the assignments. Her lectures were always interesting, I reccomend her.
Great teacher! super helpful and inspiring! She isn't going to give you an easy A But she is the most fair teacher I have ever had when it comes to grading. She truly cares about her students, and is always available. She makes classes interesting and fun. Doesn't assign busy work. This is one of the very few GREAT teachers out there! :)
This teacher is remarkable! Truly one of the BEST teachers at this school, if not the best. She is so genuine and passionate about her job and uses every means of educational tools to ensure you fully comprehend the lesson. She responds to any questions or concerns immediately, and does not hesitate to help you until you get it. Hard work=easy A+
Best teacher at ASU. Makes learning fun, and she cares about your success. Take every class you can with her.
I wish all professors were like her! It's nice to have a professor who thinks of her students as her own children! The class itself was extremely fascinating! The assignments (3 reports) were very informative and fun! Take this class...YOU DEFINITELY WON'T REGRET IT. ;D
She is a really good teacher and it is really important you good to class. She only lets you miss class three time before it starts counting against you. She also gives a profesionalism grade and that is part of going to class. I would highly advise you to take a course with this teacher. She is nice she is funny and she is helpful.
AMAZING TEACHER! She made me even more into my major. She genuinely cared for her students and it shows in her teaching. lecture topic great as well.
Oh wow she is the BEST teacher I have ever had! The class is super interesting and you will really enjoy going to class! TAKE HER IF YOU HAVE THE CHANCE!!!
Very interesting class, she has great lectures. Three written projects. Good grader (make sure you take time to proof read, she doesn't like being the grammer police). Go to class- there are in class assignments (as long as you are there you get credit). Exams are decent- study guides provided. I highly recommend!
One of the funniest people I've ever met. I don't think there's anyone who doesn't adore her.
Denise was a good teacher over all I just missed alot of classes so I didnt get all of the material. As long as you got to class and take notes you will be golden! Make sure you never miss class after a test. She picks 10 questions (that she tells you) from all 5 tests and that is your final!!
Her class was cake. She seemed like a fair/fun professor at first but it turns out she is not. She acts like she cares, but did not respond to emails about going over exams and not helpful if you miss class (even with a doctor's note)! The worst part is that she acts like we are entitled to own opinion, yet she tests on hers and non-facts. Frustrat
Great professor. Test are easy if you go to class and read the book. Interviews are enjoyable and easy. Always answered my e-mails. She made the class, and subject (FHD), interesting.
Great class! Denise is funny and makes class enjoyable. You must attend class and read the textbook (and comprehend it) to do well on the tests. It is very possible to get an A in the class. She always responded to my e-mails fast. Great teacher, great class. I definitely recommend it.
A MUST TAKE professor, she is smart, funny and so likable. Attend class, read the textbook and an A is guaranteed. GREAT, GREAT, teacher.
studied very very hard for a B. If you want to dedicate most of your study hours to this class and neglet the other ones, take her.
This wasn't a hard class but there is a lot of time spent on it. There was a lot of reading, I would say she expects you to read every word she assigns (which is at least 3/4 of the textbook and online journals.) A lot of review is needed before test time because her questions are very specific (always multiple choice) sometimes she gives answers.
She is a great teacher! She is hilarious and really cares about her students! Her first couple tests are a breeze! You do need to read the textbook in order to do the weekly quizzes! I am extremely glad I took her class. I ended up with an A and really liked her a lot.
what a pleasure it was to have professor bodman....i absolutely enjoyed this class, she is a wonderful and funny professor and she really furthered my interest in this subject....i would definitely recommend her to anyone and would take her again :)
I absolutely adored Professor Bodman! The class was pretty easy, but she made it so interesting. She is extremely knowledgeable about what she is talking about and engaging as well. If you have to chance, take one of her classes!
I took her for two classes and enjoyed both a lot. It was hard to take her for more then one class bc the tests are on the same days. She responds very fast to emails. She is understanding about personal situations. You can tell her beliefs in some instances, but for the most part speaks from a general stand point. Classes were hard but interesting
Denise is my favorite professor thus far. She suggests that her students call her by Denise although she has her PhD., which reflects her desire to build an open relationship with her students. She teaches in a professional and interesting manner. She teaches from a non-biased viewpoint and teaches the importance of cultural competence.
Denise is the most amazing professor I have had in the past four years that I have been at ASU. She is incredibly funny and will keep you interested throughout the entire course. She is also super open about others beliefs even if they are not her own and definitely teaches students to be accepting of others as well. Loved her class!
Amazing teacher! Although it takes a level of maturity and willingness to adapt to truly appreciate Dr. Bodman, it is well worth the effort. She provides great insight and a true passion for the subject matter. Take this class (or any other from her, this was my 3rd)! If you're open minded and a hard working student, you won't have a bad time :)
Honestly one of the most wonderful teacher at ASU. I loved taking her class and would recommend her to anyone. Her lectures are really clear and she has your best interest in mind the whole time. Not only an awesome teacher but also an awesome person.
Denise was amazing!!! She not only made lecture interesteing and easy to understand but you wanted to go to her class. I felt she was accepting to all religions, sexual orientation and mindsets; even if she disagreed with it. She is a great teacher and listener!
My absolute favorit teacher at ASU. She makes you want to come to her class and makes sure you understand concepts perfectly. She is funny and animated and I would reccommend her classes to anyone!
She really is the e-mail queen! Of the several times I've e-mailed her. I got a reply almost instantly!
Excellent professor. The textbooks were a little challenging, but it's an upper level course. I took the online version of this course and she spoke slowly enough that no pausing was necessary to follow and write down key points. She's passionate about what she does and it shows. I will definitely take another course with her.
I really enjoyed this class. This is my second time taking a course with Denise Bodman and I have nothing but good things to say about her. She is a really great and competent professor. I took this class online and although the course itself was quite difficult, Denise made it fun and interesting. I would take all my courses with her if I could!
Professor Bodman is the best professor that I have ever had. She is nice and makes sure that all of her students learn. She makes everything very interesting and is very knowledgeable. I am even more interested in infant development now than before I took her class. Her classes provided me with so much information that I needed for my job.
Fantastic teacher! She cares about her students and is willing to help if they need it. I have taken more than one class with her and all were great! She really knows her stuff!
I love Denise! took this class along with FAS 431, both online, and loved both. Her lectures are comprehensive and interesting, and easy to take notes on. Fair grader, but there is a lot of work required. Do the reading and assignments and you'll be fine.
FANTASTIC professor. Super nice, knows her stuff, fairly easy class (although there is kind of a lot of reading that you should probably do) I am taking another class with her this fall!
Best online class ever!!Interesting material and she makes it even more interesting through her voice over powerpoints. The assignments are easy and fun. She is awesome! I wish all my professors liked teaching as much as she does.
I dropped this class because it was too hard and I didn?t like this class but I liked her as a professor. She's funny and makes lectures fun.She has weekly quizzes over the readings and there timed. The quizzes are hard and the book is hard to understand. I would recommend not taking this class if you want to devote most of your time to this class.
Super easy class. Took in person and although we had to take test in person in a computer lab, she let us use a 1 page "cheat sheet" where we could write whatever we wanted. She encourages a lot fluffy personal examples, but lectures straightforward as are weekly quizzes & assignments. Gives tons of extra credit opportunities and is very sweet.
The class is easy enough but requires various busy work that doesn't teach much. The teacher herself is a hypocrite. Twice I've asked her for help or to clarify something on an upcoming assignment and both times was told "I can't help you, but the answer is obvious". Unwilling to help + incredibly condescending = bad teacher
She's incerdibly nice and caring, the class was by far the easiest class I had ever taken.
Teaches about things that aren't in the book then tests you on them, lots of dumb busy work. Tries to be your friend the entire semester and when it comes down to it won't help you at all. Take this class if you want to a semester full of busy work and shenanigans
She is an extremely good teacher. She is really funny and is very intelligent. The reading is kind of hard but she is always there to help if you have questions. You get to do a really cool family history project and it is life changing. I definitely recommend this class.
She is very nice, funny, and extremely knowledgeable. I love her but the course itself is very hard. Lots of reading and busy work. I dedicated most of my time to this class because of the busy work only to get a B+ in the class. Very stressful.
She has a fun personality and that's the only reason she has a good rating. Her actual class is awful! The textbook contradicts itself constantly and she refuses to clarify. Her method for reviewing and taking the exams were different every time. You never knew if you were gpoing to get a study guide or if you would get notes on the test.
She was very funny, caring and willing to help you pass the class. I went to her every wk and she helped tremendously with how to succeed in her class. However, her exams were hard to study for b/c you don?t know if it's from the book or her own lecs. Also, wkly quizzes were a pain. Overall, I learned a lot in this class and I recommend taking her.
While this class may seem to have busy work, as long as you keep track fit and have motivation, you can easily get it done (even while working 30hrs a week!) I appreciated the different studying techniques every exam because it reminded me that I really needed to understand the material to do well. I estimate that I put in ~70hrs & I recv'd an A+
She wants everyone in the class to do well. you need to read your book. but quizes are on line not in class. few papers due but are all pretty easy and she gives you more than enough time to do them. I loved her and would take her again!
I took her 8 week course and it was pretty intense! a lot of reading and writing. be careful on the writing assignments..some assignments are real "papers" and some are just papers so she is not real clear of what is expected but she is pretty nice...i guess that makes for it?
She is a wonderful teacher who wants her students to do well. While the tests are very hard, the work is fun and easier than most 400 level classes. Quick to respond to email and very uplifting and positive in her feedback. I would take any class I could from her as she is a very knowledgeable teacher who loves what she does and it shows. Pick her!
I take online classes all of the time, and these are the most difficult tests' I have ever taken. I do very well on her quizzes and assignments, but I do not recommend this as an online class. If you take her tests online, do not think you can just rely on having your notes to get you by, because it won't!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS, it is impossible!
Great professor...you will learn a lot in this class and enjoy the subject matter as well. I took her online courses (Infant Development and Family Diversity).
I took this class online. It wasn't too difficult, but it definitely was not easy. I did not put full effort into it and got a B. If you follow the books and lectures and take notes/fill out the study guides on everything, you can do well. It just takes some time and expect to put 3+ hours a week into it to get a B and more for an A. Recommend it
Lots of work, but not too hard. Has a very clear "roadmap" to help you succeed. She is very organized and I recommend her as a professor.
He is hilarious. Very fun and interesting class. You HAVE to read the textbook to do well in this class. Other than that, loved it.
She is by far the best professor I have ever had. She is very fair. We had assignments that were easy and fun to do. She engages and interacts with the class. She makes everything clear. If you read the books, you will do fine. Exams ranged from 4-6 chapters. she has a contagious laugh. Sit in the front, every lecture is like an comedy show.
She is by far the best professor I have ever had. She is very fair. We had assignments that were easy and fun to do. She engages and interacts with the class. She makes everything clear. If you read the books, you will do fine. Exams ranged from 4-6 chapters. she has a contagious laugh. Sit in the front, every lecture is like a smart comedy show.
Great teacher, she is so enthusiastic about her lectures and you do not want to miss them. She really knows how to make sure we understand the material and enjoy it. She is hardcore about the essays and tests, but that is just because she wants you to do well and actually learn something.
She is a nice lady, but she will get carried away with a particular topic and spend all but 5 minutes of the entire class period on it. She's very opinionated, and has a good sense of humor, but sometimes she wastes class time on trivial things.
Dr. Bodman is the best professor I have ever had. I came into the class just to get a cultural credit and ended up loving it. She is clear and fun, allows discussions, and presents the material interestingly. The tests are easy if you read, do the study guide and come to class. The only other thing we turn in are some assignments for a portfolio.
RUDE RUDE RUDE. Don't ask her a question because she will give you an answer that is completely unprofessional and rude. Tests were hard and she will not try and work with you to get better but makes you feel stupid.
Took her online and loved how it was set up! Her exams are hard because it's not set-point, basically have to internalize and apply the material but gives plenty of easy assignments. Hated the Lock-Down Browser she makes us use, messed up my laptop occasionally. Overall nice prof, easy class and fun.
GREATEST PROFESSOR AT ASU!!! Dr. Bodman sets everyone up for A's. Each Unit has a roadmap, studyguide and practice quizzes. I think I missed 4 gradepoints the entire semster! She is very caring and loves teaching! Could not ask for a better instructor - too bad she does not teach more classes :)
Greatest instructor at ASU!!!
I took this class online and it is very demanding. Dr. Bodman expects A LOT from you! Plan to spend between 10-15 hours a week reading, watching lectures, and doing assignments for this class. Tests are timed and difficult. I studied my butt off and still only received at B-. Good luck!
Do not take this professor!!any technical issues (i.e blackboard freezing) she is not helpful at all, which eventually leads to receiving a lower grade on test/quizzes because she will NOT reset the test. She's rude when responding to emails and tends to have material on test that were in chapters not to be covered. TAKE AT YOUR OWN RISK!!
Such a sweet teacher! Although I have taken many other family studies classes, this professor is one of the best. Although her exams are a little difficult, she always adds on extra points at the end. She is genuinely a fair grader and as long as you remember to take the online exams on time, you're golen :)
She truly enjoys teaching and it shows. I loved taking this class. Work was a suitable amount. I am taking another course with her next semester!
Great teacher! She dropped lowest exam score, added 2-5 points to each test plus a bonus 5 points to our grades. She does not round but only because she bumps you up almost a whole letter grade! She has more assignments than some other teachers but it helps fully understand the material and it is not hard. Will take her again!
Bodman is an amazing! Lectures are not boring! She gave great examples for all questions. She told us exactly what to study. If you go to class and read the book, you'll be fine on the exams. Interview papers we did were a difficult for me tho.If you show go to her in advance, she is very helpful on what to include. If you like the topic take her!
her tests are half lecture, half out of the book. She makes this clear before each test. Her lectures are great, you can tell she really enjoys what she does. I've had her for cde232 and in her online class cde430. she is by far a fave teacher. keep up with the reading, go to class, and do the assignments. Every point counts in her classes!
Took her class online. She makes great video lectures, very easy to follow. As an engineering student I had 0 interest in this topic, but found it surprisingly interesting and learned a lot. As long as you do all the assignments and take good notes from all the lectures you should do well. It's made clear what is expected on the exams.
She is one of the best professors at ASU. I took her online class and loved it. She is an awesome lecturer, uses a variety of learning materials-book reading, videos, articles, and lectures to really make sure you learn the information. The tests are pretty straight forward and she always adds extra points at the end. DEF TAKE HER CLASS!
Great professor, outlines her expectations. Exams are difficult- don't slack off, do all the readings, complete all assignment, & take her 'optional quizzes' (HINT HINT: YOU'LL SEE THESE QUESTION AGAIN ON THE EXAM)!
Denise is the most condescending teacher I have ever met and often talks down to you. She grades unfairly and her class is merely based off her opinion. Assignments are easy, tests are hard. If you have questions about grades, she will make up things she "said in class" to prove you wrong. Good luck if you chose to take this witch's class.
I loved this professor! I started as a psych major and switched to family and human development because of her classs. The lectures were interesting and interviews of lifespan was very interesting and easy! She gives extra credit for attendace and curves all exams! Study, read the text and take notes to get an A. Fair teacher.
I love this professor! Her class required a lot of reading (online articles, two textbooks, etc), but her personality is great. I looked for her classes when I enrolled for the fall. Don't expect to do well unless you read the material and understand it, but it's definitely a class worth taking.
man this class is TOUGH. shes a great teacher but its some heavy workload. enjoyed her class but it is definitely not an easy a
I took child abuse intervention and prevention from her. While the class is brand new and still under construction, I have loved every class I have ever taken from Denise. She is the best professor I have had at ASU. Loves what she does and really wants you to succeed. Always willing to help. Do readings go to class and you'll be on the right track
I'm currently taking infant/toddler development with Denise. I took FAS 370 with her last semester and she is by far one of the best professors I've had. The materials she uses help clarify what you learn and her lectures (online) are always informative and interesting. I highly recommend her.
I took this class online and although Denise seems like a really nice person in all her emails, I found her tests to be almost impossible. She seems to pull questions out of nowhere. Definitely don't recommend it online.
The material was interesting but I found the professor to be both obnoxious (she sends out mass irrelevant emails) and rude. As an A student, I expect teachers to at least speak to me with respect since I have obviously put forth effort, but she has utter disregard for her students.
Denise is very helpful, ad even though this is an online class she wants all of her students to succeed. This class has a lot of busy work, put if you put in some effort an A is definitely attainable. It is not too hard, and she gives you all the tools you need to succeed. The material is interesting and so is Denise, I would recommend her class!
Took this class online and it was pretty difficult. The test are timed and include information from lectures, videos, and 2 different books. Alot of busy work required to succeed. I put alot of work into this class and barely pulled out a B. Denise is very helpful and wants her students to do well, but expects alot from you as a student.
I took this course online and struggled with her testing approach. Many students who claim to have her previously, I think they adjust to her teaching method. She is unlike most professors and I know this because I got all As in five classes and B- in hers. She is super sweet and passionate but has a different testing approach. trick questions too!
Overall, a very solid teacher, this class has more flexibility and trust than her other classes. She was really organized and knew a lot about the topic, but you do have to work to get the grade. she is also very friendly and likes to chat a lot. She really wants her students to do well.
I took the online version of this class and she takes this class way too seriously. She doesn't provide lecture notes, only recordings. Usually around 4 recordings every 1-2 weeks then takes them down, making it impossible to study for exams. Get ready for a lot of busy work. She also makes you download a lock down browser to take quizzes & exams.
Professor Bodman was extremely helpful even though the class was online. She responded in a timely manner all the time. I don't see why others complain that the class is lots of busy work and the tests are on a lockdown browser as the class is upper-division. It's supposed to be difficult. It's supposed to take time. I worked hard and got a B.
I wouldn`t recommend if your a full time students b/c at times its overwhelming.shes gives ALOT of lectures aprox. 10-20 pgs.shes pretty legit all the homework is straight from the book, some test questions arent whats covered in readings. class is out of 250 points. 4 exams worth 50 points each and assigments all total to 50. I passed with a C+.
Ignore all the bad things about Bodman. She's is there for her students. I struggled in the beginning but in the end I pulled through with a C. Take good notes through the lectures and READ YOUR BOOKS! An A is possible if you put in the work.
This teacher was nice but the course work is ex tenuous. I thought I mastered the material but my exam proved otherwise. Her testing policies are different. you have to pass the exams with a 70% or better if you do not you have to retake the exam and pass with a c or better or regardless of your grade you will fail the course.
Barrett student here - Denise is a wonderful and super nice professor. Lectures were interesting and she wants to help you succeed. Textbooks can be a bore and assignments can be a little tedious but it's worth it in the end. Fairly easy tests and an insanely easy honors contract (read: 2-page essay). Ended up with an A+!
I was really interested in the material and though I thought I knew the subject I was WRONG. I would listen to all her recordings and still barley pass the tests. She makes you read two textbooks and the tests were somewhat difficult.
Powerpoints for the lectures are not provided. She says powerpoints are to keep her organized. Take good notes. You will need them to study for exams. Write everything down, read the chapters carefully. Exams are in class and closed book and notes. Pay close attention and study well. First exam she helps out but the rest you are on your own.
She seemed to be fed up with every question I had, so far very hard. My other classes offered an extension because books hadn't arrived, when I asked she immediately shut me down. I misread that we had to get all questions right on the policy quiz, I missed 1 and missed out on 14points because I didn't take it till I got 100%. She's not very clear.
The layout of this course is confusing, and she decided to swap the layout during the last 2 weeks of class. I also don't like her grading system. Her voice is annoying and so are her emails. Get to the point without all the fluff. I'm getting a good grade but glad this class is over. I do not recommend this professor.
Her lectures are interesting, but they tend to be long! Two textbooks are required, and its a lot of work. Do not take the 7.5 week course unless you have time because it requires a lot of work. The test are hard, and you are being video through a web cam while you take the test. Overall its a good class but not an easy A.
I am so glad this class is finally over! I took the advanced course which is typically a lot of work but she really took it to the next level. You get 1 hour for a 50 question exam which typically consist of 5-6 lectures,4-5 videos, 2-3 quizzes and 3-4 articles. Not to mention lectures are too long and unclear. Avoid this class if you can!
This class was very difficult. A lot of material goes into the tests- make sure you have time on your hands.Do NOT do an honors contract with her. I've spent at least 2 weeks on mine and she gave it back to me asking for more depth when she didn't clarify what she was looking for to begin with. Seems nice in her lectures but isn't in person.
Took this class for "fun". Really regret it! I might be getting a C in this class but I'm getting A's in ochem and anatomy. Expects us to read 4 chapters per exam in short time period (>3weeks). Even when reading two weeks ahead, I am pressed for time to read everything. On top of it, we are also tested on recorded lectures. Give me a break!
I took the 7.5 version of this class and looking back it honestly was not that bad. Professor Bodman loves what she does, and it made listening to lectures enjoyable. You do need to read the book though. She makes it easy though with her study guides. If you watch the lectures, complete assignments and fill out the study guide you will be fine.
Stay Away from this professor. She uses study guides for the exams but ends up not having any of the information on the study guides in the exams. She then says if you read the material! Are you kidding me! I spent the time doing the study guides. This teacher is plain out of it!
I loved this course and this professor! This was one of the most interesting courses I have taken so far. The course is tough & she does video monitor during the exams but if you truly care about your education & take it seriously, this course should be easy. I received A's on all exams & assignments. Professor truly cares about her students.
Denise Bodman is a very knowledgable professor and her recorded lectures are engaging. Her class seems easy, but be forewarned she lacks clarity in her tests and assignments. I thought I mastered the material for the exam, got perfect score on practice test, & still barely passed her exam; not clear on what expectations from writing assignments.
I took this as a 7.5 week long online course, and couldn't wait until it was over. Every week there are multiple assignments, videos to watch (each of which are an hour long), and long readings. Her expectations for the tests are unclear, although extra credit is usually given, it was a ton of work!
She is the best... this class is a boring subject, but she makes it SO MUCH FUN TO GO TO CLASS. She is soo funny, amazing lectures. If you have the perfect class (students) with this teacher, you will be sad when the class ends !! she is THE BEST.... Test are a little hard but if you take notes and read the book, you will be golden !!
I love Professor Bodman! She is such a sweet lady and her classes are really enjoyable. I have taken two online classes (one 7 week course, the other 14 weeks) and both were great. After taking 7 week courses the 12 week course is SO easy and fun! She is a great professor and you won't be disappointed! She genuinely cares about her students.
She explains the material well and the lectures are really interesting. You do have to read the book to know all the material for the exams. She is very willing to help anyone if they have any misunderstandings. She is fair.
Im nota FAS major n loved her class! Shes not an easy teacher, but shes a fantastic one. Her explanation of concepts is clear and concise, her tests are difficult if you dont study and READ THE TEXTS, but she will sometimes do things to help the class. She truly cares about our success. I found her inspirational, funny, and an allround great person
She is the worst instructor I have ever taken class with in my entire life!!! Not helpful Not respectful Do Not understand the real value of what she is doing.
LOVED this class! Make sure to read your textbooks and come to class for lectures!
Only teacher I've ever had that uses RLB with webcam. So you are recorded while taking exams... You can't look away from screen! Your also recorded through a microphone. So don't have people around you while taking exam. It it was very invasive. I wouldn't have taken the class if I had known about this. Other than that class was ok.
I love her! Lectures are funny and the work load isn't the worst. But you def have to read the chapters to get good grades on the exams.
I took this class last year but wanted to make sure I left a review on here. Shes one of my favorite teachers I've had at ASU. She got the material done but had a sense of humor, was kind of sarcastic, and funny. I enjoyed the class and her! If you attend the class, it should be pretty easy to get a good grade.
By far one of my favorite professor's at ASU. Denise does a great job covering all material while making the lectures enjoyable. Take note and read the chapters in the books and you will get an A.
This class is superrrr difficult if you slack. The testing approach she takes is extremely hard, never clear test questions and always tricky and not to mention 50 questions! Assignments are easy, the only good grade in the class I'll get. She is a sweet sounding professor but the class is HARD. I would not recommend taking it.
Uses Respondus lockdown browser. Flip flops about whether notes are allowed on tests. Gives lot of videos to watch (mostly TED talks). Felt like I had to watch the videos enough to memorize the content because idk if notes were going to be allowed on tests. Make sure you get 100% on syllabus quiz if you get below 100 score, she'll just give you a 0
Dr. Bodman has hard tests and uses Respondus Lockdown Browser. The tests are curved a point or two. The grading criteria is somewhat confusing. The book is essential to passing the exams (which are usually open book/note, but not always) because there are a lot of tricky/unclear questions. You learn a lot, but don't take this class for an easy A.
I understand that this is a 400-level course, but the workload for this class was ridiculous. I also understand that she doesn't want students cheating on exams, which I'm all for, but the required Respondus browser was over the top and made me anxious. This was supposed to be my fun class, but wound up being a big headache. Would not recommend.
At first I really liked this Professor. Her lectures are awesome and interesting. As time went on I started to not like her. For my course, she didn't assign very many assignments, just tests and a final project. She is a super strict grader which is good but it's over the top. She is super unclear with instructions and does not give rubrics.
Online lectures are excessively long. She really wants her students to understand the material. Reading the textbook is a MUST if you want to pass the exams.
Bodman has great energy in her online lectures and prepares you for the boring topics! She gives lots of extra credit and is amazing. Although I know I could have gotten a better grade this was an easy class. Make sure you read the material or else you won't do well!
You need to use Lockdown Browser with a camera on to take tests, its so you can't cheat (which is fine) but it is quiet creepy not knowing who is at the other end of the camera. Tests are also open for a VERY short window (24 hours or so), so if you need flexibility this is NOT the class for you! It is also a lot of work, 20 hours per week easily
The material this class covers is difficult and there is a lot of it! Denise gives good lectures, but most of the test questions are from the textbook. Tests are 50 questions and they're not easy. Lots of information to memorize. Textbook chapters are long- no procrastinating in this class. Get on Bodman's good side!
Denise is very organized, gets test grades back quickly. She is passionate about what she teaches and I think that is the best part about having her as a teacher. She is easy to talk to and responds to emails right away. She keeps lectures interesting and incorporates personal stories.
Professor Bodman is an excellent teacher that holds a high intelligence for what she teaches. She is an expert when it comes the information presented in this class. This is a tough class, the exams are hard, but this is a 430 College class so it's to be expected. It's perfectly doable, especially when this professor wants you to succeed.
She gives extra points after tests and random participation points. She tells stories about her own life that is interesting. I get really bored in this class though. You have to really pay attention because all your notes are from what she says its not in the powerpoint. definitely take notes on a laptop its faster for you.
Denise rocks!! She is a great professor, and she cares about everyone. I took her online, yet she was still the most helpful professor I had. There is a lot of reading, but she provides study guides. You can take the quizzes unlimited times to get the best score possible. Exams are hard & uses respondus lockdown camera, but lets you use book!
I really enjoyed coming to class. Her lectures are engaging and she often gets student feedback to understand what helps us learn. As long as you read the textbook chapters before each test and are at the test reviews you will do well. Beware of the VERY time consuming genealogy project that is due.
I didn't really experience her as an instructor personally since it was an online course, but from her emails and lectures, she's a sweet grandma who really cares about the subject. She grades generously. Make sure to read the books (it's worth it if you're interested) to do well on the quizzes and get the most out of the class.
The instructor herself seems super sweet and personable, but I wouldn't take this course again. The grades are strictly from quizzes and tests (requiring webcam), and the books required are incredibly dry. I am more of a hands-on learner and good writer, not a memorizer, so this class was a C for an A+ student.
Enjoyed this professor, however not a big fan of her exams. Exams are based mostly on outside reading and she tends to pick super specific questions from the several pages of reading. I still ended up with an A, but definitely make sure to read the textbook(s). She often allowed us to have open note tests (but just depended).
Denise was not helpful in this in person class compared to her online class. Her power points have nothing on them and she often goes on tangents. Would not take her in person again.
Okay, I took this class and it was a mess. The lectures and powerpoint were disorganized because she'd go off topic. I would say the entire course was just very confusing.
Not going to lie, Professor Bodman is an amazing teacher. And she knows her stuff. I wish I would've bought the books at the beginning of the semester though. About halfway through I finally realized I need the books to pass the class, which you WILL need to pass. Exams are open book & open note. Check online often for email updates.
Ended up with a good grade, but the class was disorganized. Several little projects to complete. Exams were difficult and it was hard to know what will be on them. MUST read the textbooks to do well. Often allowed open book open note on exams (bc everyone did so poorly on first exam). Class was interesting, but she often went off subject.
Denise was awesome! Actually study the material, pay attention in class, take notes and go to class and you'll get an A no problem. Unfortunately for me i out this class on the back burner to all my other courses, but if you learn the material you'll pass no problem. She's a funny and engaging teacher she made lectures fun.
Dr. Bodman is a good teacher overall. Her lectures are interesting and the content is good. I feel like she over compensates for the class being online, however. You need to use LockdownBrowser for tests and she takes the content offline the day of the test. Make sure you take notes and have a way to review, or else you'll lose all the lectures.
There wasn't a lot of clarity as to what was expected from certain assignments. The course required a large group assignment that spanned the length of the course and then a smaller assignment. Directions were very unclear for both and the instructor would then add additional expectations close to the due date which resulted in a lot of reworking
Ive taken 2 of Denises classes and both were interesting, but also difficult. You have to read the textbook to pass because half the exam is lecture other half is book. She uses respondus monitor but will often allow open note. I really enjoy this professor and would recommend her classes.
Her lectures are very interesting. The majority of her grades come from the 4 tests over the semester. The first test she let us take in groups, the second test she let us take in groups and use our notes. Because of this I stopped attending class and for the third test it was individual and closed notes so don't make the same mistake I did.
This has been my favorite professor so far. She outlines her expectations very clearly! If you take good lecture notes, you'll do absolutely fine on the tests! She is super nice, friendly, funny, and understands the diversity of the students and respects everyone's points of view. She makes the material interesting and easy to understand.
Her online course was amazing: straightforward and interesting material! Must keep up and stay on top of the material since the tabs go down. DEFINITELY need the text books. Open note exams and she lays out the material for you before so you know what is on the test. Enthusiastic and positive personality, & responds to email fast!
Dr Bodman is a gem. She is so friendly and easy to approach, cares so much for her students, and makes class fun. She relates the topics she instructs to the world outside the class, and makes learning so fun. It is clear how much she truly cares for her class and her students. I would love to take her again.
Denise is sweet, however her lectures were all over the place. She talked about herself A LOT. Tests were difficult bc she let us do the first 2 in groups, then we expected that for the rest of the semester. Class was interesting and the terms were relatively common sense. No DBs, 4 exams (noncumulative final), attendance was mostly extra credit.
Lectures are not posted to must come to class if you want notes. Listen closely while taking notes. There have been surprise extra credit when coming to class. Cute sense of humor (: test heavy because there are not really other assignments to even out the grade.
She posts due dates on syllabus then changes the time in the course but makes no announcement regarding the changed due date/time She says there is no rubric for journal entries, then grades them subjectively and does not clearly indicate what it is that she is seeking in what is said to be a personal reflection with no rubric for the assignment.
She is exceptional in her leading and guiding students towards success. Be proactive in your group and follow directions and you will do well. Quizzes are weekly, reading and watching videos is not optional for success!
I took an on-line class with Dr. Bodman, she is very clear with expectations and organized to help support assignments due dates. This class has a group final project that can cause some frustration, but would recommend meeting the class every week either by phone or video conference. The work is very inspirational.
This course is unreasonably difficult. The subject itself is great and the material is fine, but Dr. Bodman is not an aid in any way. The tests require webcam (?!), her lectures are all over the place, and she is not accommodating for DRC students with certain accommodations. She is not very helpful in person, either.
She is a great person and I really enjoyed her class. However, her tests are unreasonably hard. I have a 3.9 gpa and I am averaging Cs on her tests. I always notice that the question can be very unclear and at times indirect. I would recommend the class because I have learned a lot and the material is interesting but just be aware that its hard.
She is an amazing professor who is really interesting to listen to but I and other people in the class have found the exams to be surprisingly difficult. I do all the readings and have never missed a class, but it still takes really rigorous studying to do even somewhat decently. However, she is helpful, and is very easy to contact outside of class
She is a very knowledgeable professor, however unreasonably hard. I have a 4.0 and have never missed class, and found this class extremely difficult to do well, as did everyone Ive talked to. DO NOT take this as an elective, its not worth it. Make sure you read every chapter because tests have very specific information from readings.
I have taken several classes with Denise, all of which contributed significantly to my knowledge base. If you read ANYTHING negative about Denise, it was certainly written by a student who did not apply themselves appropriately. Denise, was a signifcant support in my completing a masters and doctorate. I love and admire her very much.
Dr. Bodman uses materials and resources accessible to anyone with an internet connection (TED Talks, YouTube videos, random online blogs etc.) meaning the class feels like a high school course, not a graduate course. I don't feel that she puts any effort into lecturing or teaching. You pretty much are teaching yourself.
This class is easy, but I had to take more notes than any other course for the quizzes (which require a webcam and installation of LockDown Browser, to prevent cheating). The group work wasn't a problem for me, because I had a good group, but I can imagine how it may be more difficult for others.
Great, interesting lectures but tests aren't outlined very well and lecture notes are not posted online. If you go to class you do get extra credit, the textbook is very helpful as some quizzes are based off it.
The lecture videos are long and very old. The syllabus says it's the most difficult class, but why are you bragging that you're a bad professor? Overall, she is rude and doesn't respond to emails on time, nor does she care about students. Try avoiding her class AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. The amount of work for this class is ridiculous and exams are tough
The workload was ridiculous. Required Respondus browser for tests and exams were timed. Lectures are excessively long. Test questions don't make sense (For example, which is the most true statement). I am an A+ student and could not get an A+. Talks about how this is the most difficult class, but that just reflects on her poor teaching.
I'm honestly shocked by some of the comments on here. Yes it is a tough class but that's only because it is an UPPER DIVISION class. What else were people expecting? Everything is clearly stated on the syllabus so if you actually read the whole thing, take good notes on the lectures, and watch the videos/read the articles she posts, you'll be fine.
Denise is very kind, but this class was a nightmare. As an A student, it was next to impossible to get an A in her class. The amount of lectures, readings, and assignments she gave each week were insane and not practical. She should be more concise and clear. Test questions were tricky even if I read and listened to everything. Truly unfair.
The content of this course is good-to-learn stuff. However, Denise made it clear that she was not interested in helping students. Overall, the course was mass confusion, tons of reading, assignments, and lots of quizzes. As a 4.0 student, Ive found it is close to impossible to get an "A" on her quizzes. Her quizzes are all about trickery.
I am graduating w/ a 3.65 GPA, this semester I took 4 courses; I earned A's in all except hers. I felt like I learned very little. You are only graded on tests, which are video monitored, closed note/book. You will not be able to see what you got wrong, so no idea what I was struggling w/. Nice lady but does not teach to diff. leaning styles.
Shes an alright professor. I found some of her comments to be insensitive and she tends to teach her opinions as if they are facts. A little unorganized, but she does her best to be clear about due dates and exams etc.
I loved her she was really sweet however unorganized some of the quizzes that are due weekly would usually be due at 11:59 but last minute itll be changed to 7:00pm then after 7 they switch it back to 11:59 which was really frustrating. But other than that the class was great the quizzes was easy and I loved her personality!
She lectures a lot and does not do well in fostering a community in class or relationships between students. Her lectures were not very impressive and seemed to lack depth. She seems like she wants the students to like her more than she wants them to learn.
I really enjoyed taking Prof Bodman Spring of 2021, there was a good chunk of material but it was very interesting. Professor Bodman was very understanding and allowed me to resubmit assignments.
The professors were fine but this class is just such a waste of time, it is 2 hours long and it feels like they are just making up stuff as they go along to fill the time. I got nothing out of this class.
Easy A as long as you do your part, this class is about YOU. 2 book reviews(15pts), one page. Quizzes aren't too bad if you watch the lect. videos, videos provides and read textbook(10-12Q). Journals are simple & easy as long as you write and treat it as it was your real journal(5pts). Extra credit. She is really nice, supportive, loved her class.
Not very compassionate. She used to post recorded lectures and no longer does. doesnt meet with students during office hours to go over missed material, expects students to get notes from other students in the class. I struggled with my mental health and couldnt always attend despite my best efforts. I made this known and still got no help.
The amount of lectures is INSANE. If you work and have other classes, I don't recommend. She doesn't work that well with you. It's like she doesn't care for you to pass or learn. I messaged her once for help and she responded with everything I was doing wrong but nothing to actually help me. PLEASE avoid her class, at least the online version.
If you are a student who likes a communicative professor, do not take her. She is unwilling to post any grades until the end of the semester. The entire course is only based on quizzes, it's heavy reading, and heavy in lectures there is no application of the content in any manner. For a 400-level class, I was disappointed.
PLEASE DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! I have had to take 2 classes with her, both were the worst classes I have taken at asu. The amount of work is actually crazy, and everything is pretty hard. I am an average A student, so taking this class really brought my gpa down. Professor is also hard to contact outside of class and is very annoying.
She was cool, very detailed syllabus though, don't ask for extra credit you'll get docked points for asking. Questions are all based on theories, sometimes typos. Need to really understand lectures or you'll bomb the tests. Good on communication though. If the TA grades late you'll be docked. Not my favorite class.
Bodman has the same expectations for an 8 week course as she would for a full term course. Her many lectures per week are 40+ minutes where she talks about personal things mostly. She does not reveal grade until very end of class so, calculate yourself. The style/tone that she uses to communicate with students is cutting. Would not recommend.
This has been one of my favorite class that I have taken. I absolutely loves Denise. She is super relatable and kind. She makes the material relevant to each of our lives. To get a good grade on the tests, you need to take notes on the lectures and the book. She allows open notes on the tests. She is such a great teacher and I would recommend again
The class was fairly easy. However, it's not the end of the world if you do not attend class. But, if it becomes frequent it can be hard to pass the class because the PowerPoint won't make sense to you. It is very lecture-based, but don't forget about the pop quizzes. Overall, she is great.
If you can, try to enroll into CDae430 early as you will be able to select a different professor and NOT Ms. Bodman. She is polite, but not encouraging, her work is not modern, a lot of lectures, memorization and recorded testing.. .there is no sense of community on the classroom, she doesn't care for her students success
She was the worst prof during my graduate program. Her instructions were unclear & students had to ask so many follow up questions to get clarity, which she never answered thoroughly. She requires each test to be recorded & is the only prof that requires this. Ironic that she teaches a leadership class when she is such an ineffective one herself.
Had her for LIA science of kindness. She was awesome! Super sweet and interesting! Would definitely recommend her and take another one of her classes.
This professor is possibly the worst professor I have had in my 5 years of college. The expectation and instructions are not clear and there is no rubric for assignments and then when you get docked there is no reason given. If questions are asked that the professor does not like, you can easily tell by the response you receive. Not helpful.
Do not take this class or you will REGRET it!
Although this was not a difficult course, the expectations for assignments were often very unclear. When you would ask Dr. B for clarification, she came off cold and unfriendly. I do appreciate the many opportunities for extra credit, but I will avoid taking a course with her again.
Genuinely one of the worst classes I have ever taken. Too many lectures and reading assignments per week, lectures and course material are chaotic and not organized, and the quizzes (especially the lecture ones) were difficult and confusing, even after watching all of the lectures, taking very detailed notes, and studying.Avoid at all costs!!!!!!
Very kind, funny, and gentle woman. I really struggled with the coursework because the due dates were never at a consistent time. Some days you have assignments/quizzes due at 7PM, others due at 11:59PM, so lookout for those. The book reviews are the biggest part of your grade, so do them! Some quizzes had hardly anything to do w/ lecture.
Dr. Bodman was fantastic! Always a very engaging class environment with a wonderful and caring personality. Main source of grading comes from quizzes, which aren't difficult, but punishing if you aren't careful. Very understanding, and promotes the self-improvement of every student she has. Come in open minded, and you will have a wonderful time.
This class wasn't too bad, the lockdown browser was annoying, but open book, open note. The class is run by the TA's in the class. The interviews were a little hard just because we had a week to get them done, with sometimes 2 interviews in one week. Overall easy class to get an A in, make sure to do all the extra credits and get assignments done!
If you're organized, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Takes attendance at random, lectures on different material , has lots of smaller assignments to support your grade. Gives you a syllabus with dates, has the assignments due on different days and does not post it until few days before, spring break work. Extra directions in class, if sick you're screwed.
She's a sweet professor in class but contradicts herself in many ways. She says not to treat research findings as fact, but does so frequently. The book reviews do not match the readings. She's rude when you try to reach out to her outside of class. Grading criteria on the interviews changed mid-semester without warning.
1-2 quizzes per week. Lockdown browser, 20 questions, and 30 minutes. 2 attempts per each quiz. Can use text (e-text as well) and notes on quiz. 1-3 interviews per week w about 6 questions/observations each. Only need to submit worksheet w answers observations/answer to questions for interviews. Plenty of extra credit. Usually 1-2 points per week.
Denise was great overall. I took this as an A session and although there was a lot of homework, it was fairly easy. She is really nice and easy to reach over email.
Avoid this class if you can - the lectures and material are disorganized, and the quizzes are confusing even after diligently studying. However, unstuckstudy AI helped streamline my review process and was a lifesaver for this course. Overall, a tough class but manageable with the right study tools.
Be ready to use lockdown browser and 2 chapters a week. She is an amazing professor and definitely shows that she cares about the class. But the work load is very overwhelming especially with 4 other classes.
She gave a lot of readings and lectures that, for a full time student and full time worker, I did not have the time for. Your tests are all on lockdown browser and if you get the PDF version of the textbook, it is so hard to find what you need. She gives weekly extra credit points but it doesn't matter since its only 1 point. Avoid at all costs!
The workload was very heavy and difficult to manage while having a job and another class. I'm okay with quizzes using the lockdown browser, but the questions were so specific that with the amount of information covered in the lectures each week, it was really hard to remember it all, even with extensive note-taking and studying.

Denis is a caring teacher, with a wonderful, empathetic personality. Denis's way of talking to us all really helped me feel safe, untriggered, interested and relaxed throughout the whole 90 min lectures. One of my favorite classes I've taken.
The class itself was pretty easy but she was not very transparent about the way she graded. She would input assignments into Canvas that would be required to complete but would say they were worth zero points. It made the process extremely confusing. Her instructions were always very confusing and not super helpful. But she was nice.
gave upwards of 14 assignments (including weekly lockdown browser exams) per week. she admitted to adding questions on the exams that were not part of the textbook/lectures, making EVERYONE struggle so badly that she had to inflate everyone's grades with mountains of extra credit. great that she didn't let us fail, but that shouldn't ever happen.
Her exams were nothing compared to what we learned in the textbook. Yes, her class was easy but an insane amount of work each week.
Test didn't match up very well to content. But lots of extra credit, do it. You will be fine, but if there another teacher with a better rating do them.
This course does not reflect what I expected from Family Systems. Much of the material centers on personal anecdotes and biased examples, which makes it difficult to take seriously. I do not feel I have learned objective theory here. If your goal is to gain a solid foundation in family systems, I suggest taking another option.
There was so much homework. I get it was a session A class but the workload was insane. The class is easy but the homework is so annoying and tedious i swear. Shes fine and kind just consider theres like 10-12 assignments a week plus her exam.
The class was harder than I anticipated. Lots of reading and assignments due each week, and at least 1 if not 2 quizzes weekly plus Exams. She cares about her students and the material, so if you are struggling reach out to her or a TA.
Forever grateful for this teacher. She extended a deadline for me, and it saved my grade. A lot of work, but that class is super interesting.
She is passionate what she teaches about and encourages students to ask questions. Her slides could use some work as most of her slides have little text and you have to be in class and take notes to understand what is on the exams. 4 exams, quiz nearly every week, and assignments scattered throughout. Definitely use the textbook!
