fun stories, good lectures and a fair grader
funny & kinda wierd. Must take all notes to pass her tests though :-/
do the extra credit, that really helps out 20% of grade. also for the final she uses questions from the test during the semester, so keep those
Study her lectures and you'll do well on her quizzes and tests. Sometimes she could make a few laughs with her stories!
Take good notes and you'll do well. Lots of great info, and I love all her stories. Very interesting class!
wacky sense of humor/good stories/jokes, tests pretty easy if you've read the books and attended lectures/taken notes. sort of hard grader on papers though.
Such a hoot! her stories gave me tummy aches from laughing so hard! Notes-smotes! Just jot stuff down as she goes through study guide!
Grades a little hard on the essays.
Funny teacher, makes anthropology more interesting. Make sure your summaries are in depth or else she'll dock you points for being vague. Her tests aren't hard if you used the web supplement because she gets most of her questions from there. Gives good notes so read those too before testing.
Make sure you do two things: Do all extra credit and study the chapters online. She's quite interesting and has a few interesting stories to add too. The film summaries should be detailed for a strong grade. The evolution films are quite good too.
lively. very nice
How did monkies become so interesting? Not really but, make sure to take really good notes, Her tests are demanding, no BSing out of them. She is very cool, but you gotta go to class to keep up.
she is the reason I have a minor in anth. Awsome teacher. study notes and you'll be fine. extremely interesting. she teaches things that you will use in life.
she's the reason i majored in anthro
My fav. Anthro teacher. She is my idol. Make sure to go to class, that is essential. Her tests are straight from her lectures. Do all extra credit possible it will help u greatly.
I graduated 2 yrs ago...Prof. Cucurny was the reason I majored in Anthro. She was such and awesome person and always had interesting stories. Class was actually fun...take good notes...quizzes were almost word for word from the notes.
she inspired me to pursue anthropology...shes a great professor...smart, witty, and down to earth!
Great teacher. She's funny and very bright. The topics she teaches are intersting.

This is my second class with Ms. Cucurny. She's one of the best instructors at CSULB. She's clear about what she expects her students to learn and her tests are not difficult. If you come to class, you should be fine. If you are totally new to Anthro, this is the best professor to introduce it. But, the main course book is confusing to understand.
Cucurny is a gift. If you take her classes, you will get so much more than just a professor. If you are an Anthro major and want to do field work, let her know. She is very supportive of her students and wants them to succeed. You have to dedicate time to the material she presents, but she does not pull any punches.
Best teacher i have ver had, she tells you exactly whats on the tests and midterm. Study for her quizzes. Overall a great teacher.
Her quizzes are hard if you don"t go to class, but she tells you exactly what you need to know. A wonderful, bright teacher. No attendence!
Very clear professor. Be sure to attend all classes, tests are based on lectures only. 4 quizzes, 1 midterm, 1 final, 1 paper, no surprises. I would take her again without a 2nd thought. Miterm & final were taken from the quizzes, with a little extra added. You'll learn and enjoy her lectures.
A wonderful professor who is definitely passionate and knowledgeable when it comes to all things anthropological. Though I personally don't have a problem with her clarity or the difficulty of her quizzes, I know many people do. I think if you have never had a good science teacher before, you may struggle a bit to grasp everything. Great overall!
great teacher, however she is never very clear on the assignments that you have to do. Unless you can retain tons of information about evolution then don't take this. The tests are hard, and if you don't do her video assignmennts & extra Cred right, then you get like no points, quite rediculous, don't go to the Museum of Man for Ex Cred. Waste of
She's a very funny teacher and explains exactly what's on the tests and quizzes. She gives you a packet of study guides which are helpful. But, you have to do a lot a memorizing.
Also had her for ANTH 110. She's an exceptional woman in regards to both personality and passion for the subjects she teaches. She does have rather high expectations of her students, but she usually offers the option of an extra credit project. Attendance to ALL classes is a must.
She is the most awesome professor you'll ever have! Smart, funny, personable, you never know what to expect from her vivacious personality. Pay attention, work hard, and you will learn as much as you laugh.
clear. easy. pretty simple material.
She's a really good professor. Teaches you what you need to know to pass the class and throws in funny side stories that actually relate to lectures. 4 quizes, 1 term paper, and 1 presentation on your paper. This class has been one of my favs.Take her, you won't regret it. Oh and there is no textbook and attendance isn't mandatory! still goto class
Took this teacher twice!!! for 110 and 315!! she is awesome!! Really interesting class, Gives you everything need to know for test..watched a lot of films, 2 midterms, final and 1 film summary!! take this class!!!
I had not idea what to expect from this class and Professor Cucurny made me fall in love with the subject. She sometimes didn't show up to class and we had to revise the syllabus a lot but she always told us what we needed to know for the quizzes and there were no surprises. Lots of Extra Credit opportunities and films. Great class!!!
beware: she's nice but KOOKY! ALWAYS showed up late and her notes jumped around, no use of powerpoint and test u on things she never mentioned. easygoing but always in a hurry to leave and never wants to talk to you if not in her office. goodluck.
If you don't have a science brain/have no clue about the roots and meanings of terminology, she is perfect. If you want scholarly sophistication, forget it. She dumbs down the material and the class is essentially a re-visitation to 7th grade Bio. Even the way she enforces classroom etiquette is like grade school.
What was the point in buying the $120 book? A lot of the material comes from the lecture, which is fine, but why did she make us waste our money on the textbook when it doesn't have a lot of the information that we need? Lectures are boring, readings are boring. Take biology instead, the material from biology is much easier to memorize. Very anal.
Very nice lady, the class wasnt difficult but i wouldn't say it was easy either.Just make sure you go to class, take good notes and study for the quiz and test. She gives alot of extra credit.
THIS CLASS REQUIRES ALOT OF MEMORIZING. IT REQUIRES GOING TO CLASS EVERY DAY. IT REQUIRES TAKING PERFECT NOTES ON LECTURES AND VIDEOS. HERES A HINT, MAKE SURE YOU STUDY THE QUIZES FOR THE MIDTERM AND FINAL BECAUSE ABOUT 30 PERCENT OF THE MIDTERM AND FINAL ARE OLD QUIZ QUESTIONS.
always late, and sometimes absent, overal weird but cool
She is very intelligent, but only seems to acknowledge her student pets. This class is no different from any other. Study and you will pass.
In order to get a good grade in the class you need to go to the lectures. Shes very fun and cool and the lectures are never boring. Its a very good class to take.
Great teacher, my favorite class, everything was interesting, all tests and quizes are based on lectures, so go to all classes. She tells you exactly what the point system is on the syllabus, and lots of extra credit. Take this class :)
This was a very informative class to take and she was a very entertaining lady. 4 quizzes, a midterm, final, and term paper (5 pages). Take good notes and make sure you read the required book "Shaman's Apprentice"
What to do if you want a B: Go to class, just listen, take a few notes, watch the films. You don't have to try too hard to get a B. What to do if you want n A: Everything in the B-section but read the books. The reason I got a B was because the quizzes have quite a few questions that refer to the book.
SHE GAVE ME A DAMN B. I LAGGED IT A LIL BUT IT WENT ALRITE, I SUPPOSE IT WAS MY FAULT. BEWARE OF QUIZZES THOUGH, CAN BE TRICKY IF YOU DONT READ THE BOOK. LECTURE IS LONG BUT SOMETIMES ENTERTAINING.
The class is super easy as long as you show up, take notes, and do the readings. She will go over questions before quizzes and tests. The class was very interesting and fun.
Awesome class, one of the most interesting classes I've ever taken. Just go to class, TAKE NOTES, and do the reading. I got a B in the class because I didn't read, if not, I would have gotten an A. The lectures are really important because a huge chunk of it is from the lectures.
Coolest professor ever. Extremely passionate. The quizzes are very specific, so come to class and read the text. You'll want to do both anyway because her lectures are so interesting & the textbook is so easy to read. SO EASY. Take this class now. I actually considered changing my major after taking this GE. Her website: www.womenforworldhealth.org
Very nice woman. She has a good sense of humor. Didn't like a few comments make about obesity and childern. I'm plus size and I took it personal. But very good class. She speaks her mind. Which some professor need not do.
Good Professor the class was fun and it was easy. You also learn a lot I recomend this class and this Professor!!
Stupid information, no Anthropology
i wasnt interested in this class when i signed up, but i really enjoyed her class. very interesting class and she has a great sense of humor and funny stories. you do need to go to class because everything is on the quizzes and tests. it is a somewhat difficult class, but thats because she knows what she is talking about.
very funny and nice only gets moody every once in a while...it is easier to follow her lectures than the book....most exams based of the lectures
Nice teacher and very clear on what you need to learn. Study guides are what you need to study and she explains everything in her lecture. If you study her notes and lectures you can get an A. Has funny stories too so shes pretty cool.
Two texts, Shaman's Apprentice and a big text. You need to read the first one, second book, not at all. Doesn't take attendence so you technically don't need to go, but you miss out on a LOT of important info. She tests you on everything she mentions. 5 quizzes, lowest dropped, 1 midterm and final. Easy, lots of extra credit available.
It is not easy, so I don't know what everyone is talking about. She doesn't take roll, but you still have to attend because she gives you definitions. Quizzes are hard, but the midterms are just all the quizzes combined. One extra credit opportunity. Funnny. Makes some inappropriate comments sometimes. If you take this class, be prepared to STUDY!
Unlike her other courses, Cucurny's H.Dev class is a pain to sit through. The first half of the semester, she lectures. The second half is purely student presentations on development topics of their choice. Cucurny's lectures are interesting and fun to sit through, but the student presentations are excruciatingly boring.
is you are not an auditory learner you will not do well in this class. 4 quizzes. 2 midterms. one term paper and presentation. easy course work, but she makes it hard to know what is important information. she is not flexible and isn't willing to help if you need special attention.
If you are a visual learner, it's not a class for you.
Easy only if you pay attention to lecture. Gives chapter/video quizzes. She's funny. Book is required. Highly recommended teacher
Crystal clear in lectures. Print out the study guides! Lots of interesting stories and facts. Gives advice in the middle of lecture at times. Wonderful professor!:)
I loved this class. It's really note heavy which wasn't a problem for me because I'm a fast typer on my laptop, but you'll struggle to keep up if you're handwriting notes. You definitely need the "Who Is Black" book, not so much the other one cause she lectures on it in class.
Pretty easy class but you MUST attend lecture to get a good grade. Her quizzes are 90% about her lectures. But if you actually attend and study your notes, they are very easy. The midterm and final are complied of questions from the quizzes. Overall an easy class
First half of the semester consists of lectures and films. Second half is student presentations. The material isn't hard, but you need to attend every lecture and take tons of notes. An A is not impossible, but you'll really have to work for it. Most students get B's I think.
Rushes through lecture like a bat out of hell and you have to be on it to take notes. Quizzes are annoying and often. 1 midterm and 1 final off the quizzes but beware - some questions are from other classes and worded completely different. Interesting subject and teacher is very chill otherwise.
Class consists of 8 quizzes (lowest score dropped), a midterm, and final. Very easy class however she lectures through overhead & not powerpoint, so taking down notes can be difficult. Offers lots of extra credit. Overall funny chill lady, can be moody, nothing too bad. Her class was very interesting in general, films were very cool. Take her!
This class was easy. There are many quizzes. Take a quiz once every two weeks which may be up to 40 questions. Only need to study lecture notes and read the Who is Black book to get a good grade. She does talk fast but I was able to write notes by hand fast enough. I would recommend. Class was interesting GE course.
This teacher is one of the best teachers i have had! her passion for the subject makes the class and fun and enjoyable. I definitely learned a lot in this class. The quizzes are not hard as long as you go to class and take good notes. overall very easy class and outstanding professor
she is a great teacher. took her for all three courses(ant 315, 319 & 353). all you need to do is take notes from her study guide she gives you. book is not necessary but could help if you miss something in lecture. overall great teacher, one of the best ive had in college
Excellent teacher. Her class is extremely easy if you just show up and take notes. The more responsive the class is to her, the more she likes you and the more fun the class will be. I would definitely recommend this teacher. Quizzes and tests all scantron and you always get them back next class.
Love Cucurny, I took her for Human Variation, too. She's an amazing professor, but I was a little dismayed by the 353 class. Great info, but it's hard to take her seriously now that I know she believes in "The Secret"... Still, just do your readings and take good notes and you'll pass for sure!
I had no interest prior to taking the course but Cucurny made it interesting. A little quirky with great stories. She is clear, gives study guides for lectures, films and everything else. Go to class, study the lecture notes and you'll do well.
I thought she was a good professor for 315, but her style of teaching isn't versatile. It doesn't work for 319. There are MC quizzes, a midterm, and a term paper with a presentation. You don't need the book, she never uses anything from it. She's very self-centered and talks about her life all the time. I hate it.
Prof Cucurny is a great teacher, she really knows what shes talking about. Go to class and follow her lectures. There are quizzes every so often so study your notes you'll do fine. She has a quirky attitude but it makes class entertaining. You can go to her office hours to check why you got the questions on the quiz wrong for future tests-it helps.
Great and interesting class! Six quizzes throughout the semester and drops one. One midterm and one final. Midterm and final are based on those quizzes, so if you review from your mistakes, you're pretty much set-up for a 100%. Although she does lecture quickly and there are 2-5 questions on the quizzes/midterms that she did not mention in class.
Dr. Cucurny is okay. It seems like she is not that good at teaching Anth 319. I think she is better at lecturing in her other Anthropology classes.
DO NOT BUY THE BOOK like I did. I spent $100 on the book and only opened it to identify primates. Quizzes and exams are on lectures so mandatory is a must. The movies she shows in class are on youtube so it's fine to miss lecture on those days. Pay attention and take good notes, and you will do fine.
She pretty much tells you exactly what you need to know for the quizzes and exams. You have 8 quizzes, a midterm and final. Sometimes she didn't feel like teaching so she just let us out :D She gives out study guides for everything so you literally have no excuse for a failing grade. Just study what she gives you and you'll pass with a B or better.
She rushes through her lectures, then asks the class if she covered everything... uhh you're the professor, not us. Her quizzes are verrrry specific and tricky. You would have to go over the readings 3 or 4 times to get some of the detailed questions she asks. Shows movies constantly, film summary, quizzes, midterm, final. Disorganized/lazy.
Everything's multi. choice/scantron; all the material is just terms, it's pure memorization. I would have appreciated a more comprehensive approach where she connected the terms/ideas as opposed to just having us memorize their definitions. overall, meh/lazy teaching method show up/take notes and you'll get an A she also gives out studyguides.
She is passionate and knows what she's talking about and is really good at making things easy to understand. Pay attention to the videos she plays! The quizzes on her lectures are easy, but the ones on videos are tough
Just go to class and pass! 6 quizzes but drops 1! Exams are those quizzes put together. So make sure you review your quizzed during her office hours, it's a huge help! You must show up to all classes but she's such a fun lecturer and most of the time your out early. Take her, she brings her dog to class too and he's super cute!
I was worried at the beginning of the semester because her quizzes are tricky and really specific, but she uses the exact same quiz questions on the midterm and final. EXACT, word for word. She allows you to look at the quizzes before the midterm to prepare. One paper summarizing a film, quizzes, midterm, final. Overall pretty easy. She's rad.
8 quizzes, 1 midterm, 1 final, 1 family tree, 3 extra credit chances. Take notes on lectures and films. Drop lowest quiz. We always finished class early. Quizzes are on lecture, reading, and films. Midterm reuses same questions from quizzes so go to office hours to memorize answers. Final same thing and not cumulative. EC is free 5% boost to grade.
Has numerous quizzes throughout the semester, all on a scantron and she drops the lowest grade. Each quiz is on one or two lectures so it is very easy to study for. One midterm and one final (non-cumulative). Also has extra credit opportunities. I had her for my 8am and didnt hate going! I would definitely take one of her classes again
Regular quizzes, midterm, and final. At the end of the semester offers extra credit. And drops the lowest grade. Come to class because most of her questions on the test are based on her class. Tad old school; does not have powerpoints but uses an overhead.
Class grade is based on 8 quizzes and a midterm and final. Drops your lowest quiz grade. Some of the questions on the tests are kind of frustrating and you have to make sure you study everything said in the lecture, but overall, pretty good class. Interesting lectures.
I am taking this Professor for the Spring semester, and I can not stand waking up at 8 am and going to her class. She is extremely rude and disrespectful. Her lectures are on a overhead, really old school. Please DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR !!!!!!
I would definitely take her again, she is a great teacher and is very open to helping you pass, only way you won't pass if you don't show up and don't study
Professor Cucurny tells you everything you need to know to pass. She's only hard if you don't try!! Quizzes straight from lecture every 2 weeks to make sure you know the material well. She does not "surprise" you on tests/quizzes. She is respectful and will repeat herself. She is hilarious and makes lecture fun.
Study study study! Amazing course :)
Lectures the whole class period. She posts study guides of the things youll need to know online but youll need to take your own notes. I suggest recording lectures because it can be easy to miss things. There is a lot of quizzes. The only book you need is Who is Black. There are a lot of quizzes but they come straight from the lectures.
Graded solely on quizzes, midterm, and final. Attendance is not mandatory but you should go to class for lectures and videos. She gives study guides for everything you need to know but taking your own notes helps retain the information. Textbook is not needed. Easy class, especially if you put little effort into studying for quizzes and test
This professor is one of the best, she makes the class fun. She even made me consider changing my major to anthropology. She lectures a lot, but easy to follow. She funny as hell. Class consists of 8 quizzes, drops the lowest grade, and 1 midterm and 1 final. Attend class and you will pass! Also gives E.C. too! Take her!!!
She really knows what she's teaching and gives very interesting lectures. Fun lecturer and brings her dog in everyday so it's a pretty interesting class to come to every morning. However, quizzes are very specific so you have to really study and pay attention to lectures. If you're willing to put in time and effort, then the class should be easy.
Hands down one of my all time fave profs! So passionate about what she teaches and it makes the lecture even more interesting. Do the extra credit! Took her at 8am and didn't regret it at all. She brings her puppy to every class if you need more convincing to take the class. Quizzes every week, one midterm, and non-cumulative final.
As a professor she is mediocre. She isnt accepting of some students views and the lecture material isnt presented very clearly. She uses an old overhead projector as opposed to a conventional PowerPoint slide. She does, however, give extra credit but the course material is uninspired and seemingly useless.
Amazing professor!!! She really loves what she talks about and her lectures are amazing. She also brings her emotional support dog to class every day and I think it makes the lectures that much better! But overall she is such an amazing professor!
total of 8 quizzes. Lowest score is dropped. final is everything lectured from midterm on. There is a chance for 20 EC points but you must be present when the professor randomly takes attendance or you will not be able to do the assignment. This course was completely boring and requires too much of your time. DO NOT TAKE !!
If you're not good at pure memorization don't take this class. Even if you keep up to date with all the material and feel like you know 90% of the material you'll likely get plenty answers wrong because of how specific her exams/quizzes are. It's easy to pass but if you're going for an A you're not going to have an easy time.
DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS. you have quizzes every week that it does not matter how hard you study, you will do bad. She is so disorganized while teaching, I could never keep up with it. Also, she tests you in such specific things, like names of bones and stuff. She Is also very rude and ironic. I felt like I could not approach her! WORST class ever!
She knows what shes talking about, and is clearly passionate. However, the class is point based on 11 quizzes +2 exams. The poorest quiz is dropped, but all of the quizzes are hard. Do the extra credit and focus in class, I never read and I passed.
You don't have to go to class, she posts lecture guides/"study guides" however, her quizzes are all 40+ questions. The quizzes are so specific, it's hard to even study for. The midterm/final are based on videos, lectures, readings, and a book and it's so much information to know. She's very unorganized. I feel like teaching is her side job.
Absolutely love professor Cucurny! I took her class last semester and she makes her lectures enjoyable and insightful. Make sure to go to all the classes because her quizzes and tests are lecture based. Quizzes are fairly easy and straight-forward as long as you go to class, take notes, and read Shaman's Apprentice. Highly recommend this class!
She has a lot of funny and interesting anecdotes but is outdated as a teacher. Still uses overhead slides from the 90s and just writes her notes out for you to copy them. The lecture is basically her giving definitions. Most of her facts are outdated and there were some pretty awkward group discussions on race. Overall a passable class though.
Absolutely love her! This is my second class with her and she honestly made me fall in love with anthropology. By listening to her lecture, you can really tell how knowledgeable she is in the subject and her passion for what she is teaching. Would definitely recommend her if your considering taking an anthropology class. Make sure to study!
Do not take this professor! This is a 100 level class yet she literally tries SO HARD to make this class as difficult as possible. She has no chill and will put you on blast in front of others during her office hours. She mentions that there is no need to memorize dates, yet the majority of the tests ask for exact dates! AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!
Took Cucurny 4 times during my undergrad, and this was my favorite class of hers. No textbook required, just a short book that you need for the quizzes. Super straightforward class, just follow instructions and you'll do fine. Go to office hours to look over old quizzes, questions are repeated for midterm and final. Loved her life lesson lectures!
