She changed my view on sociology, she's just awesome, I mean she gets you stimulated, challenges your mind in thinking creatively and from a sociological perspective. I recommend this very strongly to anyone, whatever your major is, it will open new doors on how think about things that surround you!

She is a very understanding and approachable teacher. Her class gives you a good perspective on things. She gives great examples during lecture and is very organized. Her class takes a lot of effort, but it's interesting so it doesn't seem so bad.

I thought Denise was a great teacher. But she grades very HARD on almost everything. I tried VERY hard and put in a lot of effort in her class. I received mostly B's on all assignments. However, my over all grade in her class was a "C". I'm very disappointed & I felt that I deserved a better grade.

The class is very interesting but she grades very hard. The tests aren't too bad, just be sure to study quite a bit. On the homework just be sure to answer everything very thoroughly or she will find a lot of places to take away points. Overall an enjoyable class.

Great class

Denise isn't an easy grader, but I don't think she's all that hard either. She's fair. You need to asnwer the assignments completely, and you need to study for exams. It isn't an easy A class. You'll learn a lot, and it will broaden your mind.

Pretty much the fairest, most thought provoking teacher i have had. She is so helpful with you. It isnt a real easy class, but she makes you want to do real good. Intresting prespective and really open, even when she dosnt agree with you.

I think she is the best professor I have had! She makes the class fun. Her tests are straight out of her lectures and she gives hints the day before the exam. You can do really well in her class if you go to class regularly. I highly recommend her to everyone. You will learn alot and look at the world differently after taking her class.

Her lectures are very good. Shes a good teacher and wants her students to do well. I was having some trouble with her class but i got some help from her and i was able to pass the class with a C. I did get some F's on the 1st & 2nd test, but with her help i was able to turn around and pass. She is helpful! I would sometimes forget about the lecture and look @ her booty too many times!!!

This is one of the first classes I took at BCC, and the reason I changed my major! She's a great teacher who makes the student's THINK about the world around them rather than just accepting it at face value. She's willing to help if asked, and grades fairly. It's hard to take this class without having some beliefs challenged and even changed.

Denise rocks... let's be honest here. Knowledge is her focus and she is really helpful is getting students to understand the material. OMG this class is wicked fun.

Johnson rocks! Lots of reading, but nearly all the articles are incredibly interesting and/or short. She's very helpful, fairly easy grader, just wants to see some interest. It's no wonder she's the Chair of Sociology, she knows her stuff! DEFINITELY TAKE HER!

She is a great teacher! is very clear on what she expects and makes class very fun. The only thing is that at the end of the quarter she will not respond to your emails. I got an A on every assignment and mid-term AND final and still ended up with a B+..im not a math genius but that doesn't add up..and when i emailed her she never responded to me!

Wonderful teacher. She is well prepared with her lectures and fun for the class. She gives you an exam review and if you study that you'll do perfect. Lots of readings from the book but they are interesting. Be ready to talk a lot in class...very interactive and FUN!

Denise Johnson is hands-down the finest professor at BCC. Classes include a combination of audio, visual, and hands-on methods that appeal to every learning style. Atmosphere is fun and friendly. Grading is based upon knowledge of concepts and ability to think critically. Highly, highly, highly recommended.

Denise did a good job teaching this class for the first time at BCC. She's pretty darn knowledgeable. My only complaint is that sometimes I didn't feel the material was related back to sociological theories/concepts. It was an interesting course, though.

Great teacher and fair grader. She presents ideas in an engaging way. Some of the material is old or outdated but still interesting. Assignments are light - just reading articles and doing short writing assignments. Take good notes on her lectures. Highly recommend her as your SOC101 teacher!

Denise is one of my favorite professors. I have taken two of her classes, and am sad that i am not able to find time in my schedule next quarter. The topics she chooses are interesting, her expectations are clear, and she is very willing to help. You need to do all the reading and use critical thinking, speaking in class is appreciated.She's great!

very good personality, but hard teacher. The material was too heavy for a soc 101 class. it was more like Soc 300 level. I didn't like the phrases and vague words that were used in her exams. If she just gave the exam simillar to the reveiw sheet that would have been great. you probably can pass this class but don't expect more than C

Pretty easy teacher. Tries to make things loud & fun. Makes good study guides for tests -know every thing on them & you'll do well. Easy weekly writing assignments & group presentation. You do learn some things and if you put effort in you'll get an A. If you are pre-nursing or something else requiring A in Soc. 101, take w/ this teacher for sure!

I have 98 pages reading this week and a 7 pages essay next week....Easy?I don't know... She has a really weird due time for assignments ----10am---- So if that assignment is due on Wednesday, it's basically due on Tuesday.....Group discussion+reading question+reflection every week, basically means you have over 3000 words awaiting each week

I took two online classes from this professor - SOC 101 in the summer, then SOC 240 in the Fall. SOC 240 is a lot harder than SOC 101. A LOT of reading. I found that she is VERY responsive, although she had a baby in the middle of the quarter so was gone for a few days. I learned more in her online classes than I have in any other online class.

This class is a lot of work, but it has really changed my perspective for the better. I have taken several online classes...just expect to do a lot of reading, discussion, and reflection. You will need to be self-motivating and do some self-teaching, like with any online class.

her online soc 101 is really interesting. there's a ton of discussion, so you get to know some of your classmates. there are weekly group seminar assignments. good topics. denise is really organized and grades work fast. the class site is easy to follow, once you get the hang of it. highly recommend if you need an online class.

Took this course online, fairly demanding workload, you need to log in almost every day to keep up. Does not accept any late work, but if you keep on top of it, its very possible to get a good grade.

I disagree with the previous poster. I have a disability, and Denise was a huge help to me. The website is easy to follow.Directions are detailed, so that was a big help to me. When I gave my letter of accommidation to Denise, she offered to do anything she could ot help and mentioned that she has a lot of students with disabilities in her classes

this is the best online class!the topics are interesting,you talk to your classmates a lot,and the assignments are laid out well.i did a fieldwork paper in which i visited a store and wrote about the gender images in kids' toys.denise helped a lot when i needed it,just dont expect to hear back from her over the weekends.i recommend this class.every

Denise is an excellent instructor and really understands how to teach an online class. Scores are posted quickly, so you always know how you are doing. Be prepared to do a lot of discussion in order to earn your A.

I'm in this online class now, and i like how its set up, lots of interesting discussions and activities. denise is not as involved in discussion as some of my other online professors,but i like that she lets us discuss without butting in all the time. she responded quickly when i've had questions for her, so thats good. doesn't allowlate work.

I just finished this class and I can say that Denise sets it up really well. She's very organized and fair. Not an easy class, you have to do the work to do well. When I didn't do well on the midterm, she helped me prepare a study plan for the final. She helps you love sociology. Never a boring day in class.

Have had Denise for 2 classes online and think she sets up her courses great. The work is interesting and the textbooks she chooses are great. She responds quickly and fairly and gives nice feedback.I only wish I could have taken an in person class from her because I've heard she's fantastic.

I took her soc101 class online and she was great! So nice, sweet, and she is so clear about assignments. Gives compliments when deserved. The "essays" are short and casual (aka easy). The class was an eye opener. I HIGHLY reccommend this teacher!

Funny, organized and experienced teacher. I took her for Soc of Sex and she teaches it according to her opinion. But if that doesnt bother you, its a fun class. Lots of reading, lots of documentaries, youtube videos lol. Weekly quizzes, weekly seminars, 2 tests and 1 GIANT group research project. If you don't like group work, dont take this class.

Denise is very candid and open to discussing things in an adult manner. She can be somewhat tempestuous if her students are being disruptive or disrespectful, but she's otherwise a pretty good professor. The seminar papers due every week and quizzes every Monday on material we've not yet talked about gets a little annoying, however.

I love this class! Denise is funny, and she knows her stuff. I needed some help,and she was willing to meet with me to develop what she called a "plan to succeed." If you're willing to keep up with the readings and have your mind opened, she will lead the way. Quizzes are a piece of cake and worth only a few points. Papers are more important.

She is a great teacher. The class is fun and interesting with alot of group activities. Denise is very helpful & is always there to help you out. The class has alot of readings & discussions. Quizes are easy & make up v.little of final grade. An easy A.

This class was challenging, but very interesting. Denise obviously loves sociology, and she will make you love it too. She really cares about helping you learn the material, but you have to study a lot for her exams. If you put in the time to do the work and if you study a lot, you should do well. I wouldn't say this is an average difficulty class

I love her! Classtime is always interesting, her lectures are great, and we do a lot of fun activities. She's reasonable and flexible. If you ask, she'll help. She gave really thorough study guides for the exams, and i think that was the biggest help of all. I'm going to major in sociology because of this class.

This was one of my favorite classes that I've ever taken. I'd like to work with children in the future and this class was very helpful to me. The class content was excellent and the energy of the class was relaxed. Denise is really good at getting students interested and involved. Highly recommended.

She is a tenured professor and she has lectured in some of my other sociology classes. She was my first sociology teacher and one of the main reasons I am now going to be a sociology major!! just finished this online class and really liked it. site is very organized, dense's expectations are clear, and she gets back to you really quickly if you contact her. there are a lot of discussions in this class, though, so don't take if you don't like that. if you make posts and read posts, it's easy to get As on discussion.

Took an online class with her and it was, hands down, the best online class i've ever taken. great discussions and the fieldwork project was really interesting (I analyzed popular music for mine, but there was another one about going to the mall.) Nice instructor.

Denise is great! I took her Intro class online and had some great discussions and a fun project. She was quick to respond to my emails, and her class site is setup really well. I'd recommend her, although I have heard that she's even better on campus, tho.

This class is great! Class discussions are really interesting, although sometimes intense. Lots of films, which can also be emotionally overwhelming at times. As a result of this class, I am more aware of how gender operates in my life. I didn't really like the book, but the seminar readings were better.

Denise is a very good teacher. My only concern is she didn't return assignments until the last two weeks of the quarter, but she will tell you your grade in the class at any time. This online class was fun and very informative. She provides lectures that are helpful towards the assignment in that given week, plus if you have any questions she is fast in replying. Her tests are easy if you took your time reading the textbook.

I've had 3 classes with Denise and can say that she is excellent.SOC 101(ol), Sexuality,& Families. Each class was pretty different, but she's organized & really good at teaching what you need to know.I usually forget material in other classes, but I am able to remember what Denise teaches. Not the fastest grader though, but that doesn't bother me

Decent lectures, the discussions really help you to understand the material. She will give you a study guide for the two exams (mid-term & final only). Gives TONS of extra credit quizzes every week on readings. You will have roughly 50-70 pages of reading every week. There is also a lot of writing that goes into this, but are very easy 1 page

I took Denise this fall for Sociology 150: Social Lives of Children and Youth. She is an extraordinary professor, and loves what she does. I very much enjoyed having her and learned tremendously from this class. I have grown taller as a person for taking this class. It is a very fascinating class. I highly recommend taking her as a professor.

She has 2 exams, both easy if you study, and you can use notecards. As long as you do all of the simple homework projects you will get an A in the class.

Denise is one of the best teachers I've ever had and is one of the nicest people I've ever met. She is extremely knowledgable and is great at explaining concepts. While a lot of reading is required, you can make as many notecards as you want for the tests, which makes them rather easy.

The class is not that difficult, but online requires a lot of reading and writing. The class consists of seminar readings, weekly discussions, interesting lectures, a few essays, 2 quizzes and a fieldwork project. A lot of extra credit offered too! Instructor can reply slow at times.

Denise is a great teacher. But be prepared for a heavy work load and a lot of reading. If you are good at managing your own time and enjoy reading you will do fine. There are weekly discussion posts, 6 essays, group discussion posts, and 2 timed tests that require a lot of knowledge on the reading and lectures.

Although I took her class online, I found her to be really helpful and supportive. I had some unexpected surgery, and she was really understanding and worked w/me. Very interesting course materials, although not everyone in the class participated as much as I'd like. I guess that's expected in an online class. Lecture videos were very interesting.

i really like the way denise structures her online classes. she posts a short lecture each week, and it's really interesting. she also uses videos that relate to the book. it feels like a lot of written work but the assignments give you practice using the ideas. i found it really easy to learn because it all kind of relates.

I've taken two classes with Denise. Dating and Families (on campus) and Intro (online). Denise is better in person, because you get to see how nice and funny she is. Her assignments are reasonable, and you need to read weekly. In the online class, it is interesting, but not as personal. More reading and writing, but still a very good class.

Finished her sex class this week. Online class. Super interesting. a few essays to write, but they were clear and simple. You just need to do the readings and watch the videos. I learned a lot in the class. Just be sure to do all the extra credit because that helps if you miss an assignment or don't do well on the exam. Taking her 101 in the fall

She is an amazing chill teacher that you can be comfortable around. There is a lot of reading on top of in class lectures. Get ready to watch films for homework, anywhere from 10 mins to an hour. Also get ready for lots of note taking! Overall, I enjoyed her teaching skills, she had very engaging lectures.

Great sociology class, lots of extra credit and the tests reflect the class content. One chapter and lecture each week plus notes, but notes can be used on tests.

The lectures were really easy to follow and the subjects she chose to focus on were fun to learn.

Took her online sexualities class and loved it. Her materials and lectures are really interesting, and even though it took her a while to return papers that didn't matter much to me. Ended up doing really well in the class. Gives extra credit opportunities in case you miss something.

Denise is the best prof. I've ever had. She truly cares about each and every one of her students, and makes sure every class is unique and interesting. The amount of work given is completely respectable for the subject matter covered, and you'll do well as long as you keep up with notecards. Take her!!!

Love the way she teaches!!! Super funny and full of energy, makes sociology seem very interesting and easy to understand. Only has two exams throughout the whole quarter and doesn't have quizzes. Gives out clear study guides before exams and only tests on concepts she has gone through.

I loved this class!! Denise is an amazing professor, and is clearly very knowledgable on what she teaches. The class I took was movie based, so we would watch a movie each week then have some assignments related to it (generally pretty easy). You always feel comfortable asking questions or voicing your opinions during discussions. 10/10 recommend!

Super easy class, you'll get an A as long as you do the work. The information is also pretty much common sense, so although there's a lot of reading, you can get by with just skimming most of it.

I'm a running start student and it's my first time taking online classes this quarter. Denise's class is very organized and this helped me understand everything that I need to do. I was nervous about taking college online and I'm doing well. Denise's assignments are fun and she grades everything fast. I recommend her very much

Very entertaining and engaging lectures. Watched a lot of movies and wrote about them which was fun and easy. Easy grader, as long as you understand the content you'll be fine on your essays.

This class is very organized. Lectures are very easy to understand, and she does an amazing job of breaking down each topic. Assignments are good at making you understand the topic. Its almost like even if you are lazy at this class, you will still learn a lot because of the structure of this class. Some short essays, lots of extra credit.

This professor cares A LOT about students and the material! There are lectures you need to watch every week, as well as notes you need to turn in with them. There are discussions due every week, and some essays OR other assignments with it. Tests are multiple choice but on canvas. The class is VERY easy I learned a lot from her! 10/10 recommend.

This was a good class. It was structured by a lecture w notes due, discussion post and mini-assignment each week & exam or essay alternating each week. The exams are open book and she has extra credit opportunities. The work load was pretty manageable as long as you stay on top of things. She isn't a harsh grader either. Would reccomend.

I loved this class and Prof. Johnson! Not only was the content really fascinating, but the structure of the class is really simple with a discussion, lecture notes, and occasionally an essay each week. She is a really easy grader and always supplies extra credit. However, she takes a bit to grade things and doesn't give feedback.

I learned a lot because her assignments make you think about the material and apply it to yourself. She doesn't accept late work but there's extra credit. this was an asynch class!!! lectures + notes assignments were very straight forward chapters of textbook are looong, spent hours reading 1 multiple nights every week very little quizzes 4 500-700 word essays and one big 1000 word essay at the end weekly discussion boards + have to reply to classmates was a hassle. overall, she seemed nice + credit!

I really enjoyed this class! The lectures were quite entertaining for me especially since she explained every clearly. Weekly work consists of reading the chapter (avg. 30-40 pgs), lecture (avg. 10-25 min), lecture notes, discussion post, sometimes videos, on occasion there was a 500-700 word essay on the topic.

I've taken a class with Denise three times and can honestly say that she's the best online teacher i've had. Class is very organized and easy to follow. Love the lectures and the assignments push you to think and learn although they aren't hard. i think her classes are relatively easy but that doesn't mean you won't learn a ton. highy recommended!

About an hour of reading a week if you read somewhat fast with 3 discussion posts.. An interesting class to take for the diversity requirement. The quizzes were open note and open book. The final fieldwork project took about 3 hours total and was quite simple. Many extra credit opportunities were offered as well.

Generally speaking, this professor was great with how they did the lectures. There is a good amount of reading that you'll need to do while also watching the lecture notes. The hardest assignment that you should be aware of is the Fieldwork Assignment.

Took this class having no idea what sociology was and finished loving it. Found myself talking to family about what I learned. Denise makes the class really interesting, with fun lectures and assignments. Discussions were good, but replying to classmates was a headache sometimes. Class was easy to follow and understand.

didn't really know what to expect with this class, but its exceeded my expectations. topics are really interesting and even though there are a lot of assignments, they are simple and interesting. she doesn't take any late work whatsoever, so don't even ask. but theres a lot of extra credit to make up for that so it balances out

Great class. Denise is organized and makes the class fun. Even the assignments were fun to do. Learned a lot although class wasn't hard at all. Don't use AI or turn in work late because shes very strict about this. Lots of extra credit.

Great professor, learned a lot with minimal work outside of class, maybe an hour a week of homework but lectures are genuinely interesting. As long as there aren't too many people in your class that just keep talking the whole class discussion, you should have a good time.

Knew nothing about sociology going into this class and now I want to major in it. Denise made the class really fun and interesting. I found myself going home and talking about it with my family. Quizzes are hard but she gives a lot of extra credit to help make up for it. Do all of the extra credit and you'll be happy with your grade

Lots of work but the workload stays the same throughout the quarter. Gives clear instructions and feedback. Great sense of humor, makes the lectures fun. Accepts no online late work but gives a lot of extra credit opportunities.

This was hands down the best online class i've taken. Very clear structure and assignments were fun. There's a lot of writing, but it's easy writing because you're writing about movies or tv shows or even your own life. Exams were harder than I expected but she gave a study guide

Professor Johnson was amazing! This class was so much fun and I enjoyed hearing out the lectures that revolved around the topic. There is a strict no late assignments policy, but there are lots of extra credit opportunities! Definitely recommend taking this class.

Professor Johnson was amazing this is my second sociology class I've taken with her at Bellevue College, and she's always so well organized which is greatly appreciated! I recommend taking classes with her because the lectures are so much fun and interesting to learn about. The assignments in the class are manageable.

The class was really interesting and fun. Seems like commonsense at first, but then you realize that it goes a lot deeper than that because she really makes you think. I felt like I learned something profound every day. Participation in class, online lectures, discussions, and project. Midterm, final and quizzes.

Pretty easy class, able to get away with not reading the long textbook sections. Mostly graded on discussion posts, lectures, and quizzes (4 of them) which are not hard. Does not except any late work but there are lots of extra credit opportunities. Start fieldwork project early as it is pretty time consuming.

The class was very easy just do all the extra credits and you can get a very high grade i got above 100% in my class cause i did every extra credit i could do.

Even though she doesn't accept late work AT ALL, there are so many opportunities for extra credit work. The lectures are pretty entertaining and easy to watch. The midterm and final exam were a little difficult because questions were extremely textbook specific!

I love this class! Class meets twice a week and the rest is online. Assignments are interesting and really help you learn the material. She's funny and although the in-class quizzes are kinda hard she gives hints and extra credit to help make up for it.

I took Denise for 101 and wanted to take another class w/her so I signed up for Gender. This class is better than 101. She pushes students to think deep about gender - we have weekly discussions about topics like advertising, and we have weekly gender exploration assignments that are kind of like reflections. Tests and a movie analysis paper.

Class topics are interesting and assignments are not boring. she is very strict about not excepting late work. If you miss a deadline she wont take your work, but she offers a lot of extra credit. Theres a project that is fun to do. also a couple of exams, discussions, lectures, and a few small assignments. very doable.

I have taken 3 classes with Denise, intro gender and bodies. All were very good. Excellent lectures and assignments are interesting. Some weeks are heavy and others are light so it balances out. Tests can be a little tricky but there are enough other assignments that helped pull up my grade to an A. No late work but extra credit makes up for it

Really liked her hybrid intro but wish we had more time in class. Class was always interesting w good discussions and activities. Denise is energetic and passionate and funny so it is never dull. She encourages you to be open minded and think hard about society.

I really enjoyed Professor Johnson's class and the approach to teaching. The lectures were engaging and encouraged me to think critically, which allowed me not only to learn new things but also to improve my English skills as an int'l student. Really loved this class and Denise's teaching. I am an international student, and this class helped me better understand the culture. Denise is understanding and her lessons are fun. Class discussions were interesting and although I felt shy she helped me feel comfortable speaking.

She is very clear, thoughtful and has a genuine impact on her students. She provides excellent examples of abstract sociological ideas from real world experiences. Her organization, accessibility to her and the fact that she causes you to really think about things make her one of the most influential professors I have had.

I really enjoyed this class and found it very engaging! There aren't too many materials to read, given that there is no textbook. I also really enjoyed the lectures and learned a lot from them. There are two tests for this course and they are not bad at all, especially if you engaged with the work throughout the course! No late work!
