She is the worlds worst teacher. Nothing she lectures on, orassigns on homework or quizes, is on the test. The tests are hella hard, the class average is 40%, no extra credit, everything is graded hard. She needs to quit.
Wow...just wow. Um well, if you're interested in a professor who really could care less about the students or people in general, and is only teaching to serve her ego and make money on the side for her dogs, then this is the class for you. It really is amazing, how horrible she was.v
Yeah... if you can avoid her, by all means do. She is very cutting and condescending. If you are a good self learner this is the teacher for you.
One of the top three worst teachers I have ever had.
She is stuck on herself. She demands that you call her Doctor Patterson.
She is a good teacher but not easy. She can be intimidating at times. She's very smart and can help you with anything. If you don't have the time to do the work then don't take this class. She will push you to do better.
Worth every minute in the class! Learned a lot from her! Good Class! However, she's very fair and extremly hard. Be ready to study overnights for her tests!
She is very rude and speaks down to the students, her tests are overly hard and does not sway from old ways... never shows the easy way..
I learned a lot in the class, but had to struggle for a B. I've heard she doesn't give As. She is not receptive to student questions and seems to enjoy putting people down. Buy the recommended CPA exam review book--it saved my grade. You won't do well just focusing on the textbook. Still worth taking if you're serious about accounting.
Attendance is not part of your grade, however, if you are absent, she takes away points. Pay attention in class and you shouldn't have to study to much. She is very rude. She doesn't show respect to anybody who has lower than an A. She trys to weed out all the bad accounting students.
She couldn't care less what you think about her. Her tests come from the most minute things in the book. You have to study the entire chapter in order to do well on the test. She feels that you should know all the "easy stuff" so she tests on the hard stuff. Having said all this, it is a good prep course for the auditing part of the CPA test.
Worst teacher I have ever had! She is biased, rude, and doesn't care if her students understand the material or not. She is not fair with her grading, and she has more selfrighteous pride than anyone I have ever met.
Tough but good at teaching the intermediate class. Have to work hard for a B. Try and take auditing from someone else. She teaches advanced courses the same way she does intermediate, and the students are not well served by it. If you enjoy memorizing journal entries, go for it, but don't expect to do well when you start working.
Probably the worst I've had in my college career. I've got an A in a harder accounting course, yet I'm not passing this one. Doesn't convey the material so students can understand
Do NOT take her for any acctg class! If you hear the horror stories, they are all true! I came to her class everyday. I did better on a some exams and my project compared to the class mean. My cumulative grade came out to 69.9 and she still gave me a darn D for the semester! I have to retake that darn class because of a stupid .01 point. Ruthless!!
I don't like the instructor, she is not helpful outside of class. Her exam questions are too details... be prepare to do lots of readings..
She is a great teacher, however if you want to pass you shouldn't take her.
Nightmare. Does not teach. Hard tests. No required homework, but if no one does the homework she ends the class after 10 minutes.
she is very hard. it's difficult to get an A on the test.
this was a hard class! My success was due to the ammount of time I spent studying and paying attention and participating in class. She is rude, and not the most helpful, and seems like she doesn't give a rip if her students pass or fail. I used the book all the time and completed all the homework. If you don't want to work for it, don't take it
Auditing is a tough class no matter who you take it with. But that doesn't mean the instructor has to be mean! Patterson doesn't help students when they need it the most. I mean she puts down people or turns them away instead of helping them. It's still possible to do well in the class although that means doing a lot self learning unfortunately.
Rude, uncompassionate, uncaring, inconsiderate, ruthless hard-headed, will not admit mistakes. Tests students as if they are already experts. Will not help you at all to succeed. Does not give a rat's behind for her students. Expect to be a genius or study like a lunatic if you want to pass. I can't believe a person like her is allowed to teach.
I will simply type what I wrote on Patterson's teacher evaluation: Take auditing with another instructor instead.
She's inconsiderate and disrespectful. I paid a lot of money with the increasing tuition costs to be in acct 120b class and i did not get my money's worth. I got so fed up with her arrogance that i decided to drop her class in the middle of the semester. 4.0 students are barely passing her class.
Tried to avoid the teacher as much as possible but had to take her. Her mother passed away in the beginning of the semester so she was gone for 3 weeks so somehow I thought she would be EASIER when she got back. NO WAY! seems like she could care less about anyone even her mom passing away. so sad. Even Corp. Tax class was easier than her.
She does not mind that the class average on her tests are 50% and she still will not curve or help out anyone. She think's everything is a piece of cake and has a hard time understanding that we actually struggle in the class. I really really would not suggest her. I have had many accounting classes at State and she is by far the worst.
I was a 4.0 at Fresno State until I took her. Got a B and studied like a lunatic. The majority of the questions on her exams seemed to come from the book (similar to homework) but seems like some were CPA questions -Many subjects addressed in the same question, and normally they will be 10 pts out of 100. Hard-head? Yes, but very good lectures.
Seems like she wants everyone to fail. Not clear at all
She is brilliant, incredibly smart. Great lecturer and goes very slow. She will do extra examples and doesnt take short cutes when explaining. Very clear and you learn alot, but her tests are way hard which makes up most of your grade. No power points so you have to go to class, but if you show up u will learn.
I don't know why people say she's horrible, but I thought she was a really good professor. Her teaching style is great. One of the best accounting professors I've ever taken. Actually understood something from acct 120. Her tests are hard though. But it's not impossible to pass her class. Would recommend her if you actually want to learn!
So I took a gamble by taking her after reading reviews and talking to students. So here's the truth: She's hard. She's rule oriented. She doesn't show mercy. She's sarcastic and straightforward. With all that, she's the best teacher I ever had at State. I learned my stuff. You need to study and not be afraid to ask questions and be wrong. Take her.
Every single horror story you have heard is true! This class is not impossible to pass but will consume your life and dominate your will.My exam scores were 40,80,60,and a75 on the final. The class average was a 62 on every exam and she showed no mercy when grading. The project was worth 100pts and she goes out of her way to catch cheaters. Good luck
It is pretty hard class itself. It is important to attend classes and know the material. Teacher explains well. I took this class twice with her and I do not regret it. The material was very hard at first time, but way easier at the second time. Teacher is good, so take her.
She is an excellent professor. Don't take her if you are lazy and don't want to learn anything. She is way better than that Ude. Ude has absolutely no training and is horrible as well as quite an eyesore! Ugh! Patterson is outstanding. Wish she taught more classes.
If you take any from her, you will definitely learn something. You will have to work hard to get an A. she goes through each section on the board, and goes through H/W problems that she assigns. The tests are not designed to trick anyone, but they aren't easy. study the H/W problems and read through the chapters.
I recommend Patterson. She is an excellent accounting professor.
Excellent accounting professor. She knows her stuff!
Patterson is the best accounting professor at FSU!!!! Wish there were more of her!
I learned a lot from Patterson. I highly recommend her.
Patterson is an outstanding professor.
Good class. Great instructor.
Awesome accounting instructor.
Patterson will always go the extra mile for her students. Take her.
Patterson is always willing to help her students. You will learn a lot from her.
Patterson is fabulous. No other can compare to her. Learned a tremendous amount from her. Thank you Patterson.
Wish Patterson taught all acct classes. Learned a ton from her.
Great use of Power Point. Patterson gets her points across thoughtfully and has natural teaching ability.
Knowledgeable and cares about her students.
SURPERB! Patterson is one of the few professors that actually has teaching ability. I learned so much from her!
Highly recommended.
Always prepared and eager to help.
Learned a lot from Patterson. Her ultimate goal is to help you succeed
Patterson teaches with passion not arrogance. She makes accounting class practical and understandable.
Excellent!!!
Knows her stuff! Awesome professor!
Awesome instructor!
Great and is willing to go the extra mile for her students.
Well at first everything was going fine, I didn't anything negative to say about and then I really got to know her. I don't know if she's having a bad semester or what but she is extremely rude and sarcastic. Do not ask her questions in class, she will make you feel stupid and give you no credit at your attempt to answer when no one else is.
Patterson is not what I expected. Reading the good reviews on here had given me hope, made me think she would be a swell professor. Well boy were they wrong. She is rude. She does not go over the concepts, does not explain the material well. Only goes through hw. Exams determine your overall grade. No extra cred , shows no mercy. Take someone else.
Glad I took this class over the summer because after 6 weeks, I was so done with this class and prof. She started out really good and then became rude after someone questioned her on a test question. Her "study guide" was to read the entire chapter. She did make the lecture interesting, though. Be prepared to read the chapters and participate!
I am glad I took this class with her because she explained everything in order and how it should be perceived - the right way. Tough grader, tough test. At least skim through materials before class. Do the homework. Project at the end helps a lot to bump your grade. No tricky questions though, it's just plain hard (exams). Helpful.
She does not teach much, but expect you to know everything on the exam. She likes to put her students on spot during class. Try to avoid her if you can.
Excellent. You will learn a lot from her.
All I can say is that I wish I had gone to her office hours because, after all the studying I did for her tests (Two weeks in advanced particularly) I still managed to fail the first two tests. Not helpful, has an uneasy tone of voice, more than half the class failed the class. That's speaks a lot about her class.
Very tough. Read all the material for exams. Doesn't curve, doesn't drop exams, takes attendance EVERY class, 0 extra credit opportunities. Start reading already...
I think all the positive reviews on here are from the woman herself. Disrespectful, rude, personally attacks, embarrasses students, tests on material not covered in class. Honestly disgusting. Makes us pay $200 for a textbook but tells us the book is wrong about stuff when it conflicts with her results
No one doubts that Dr. Patterson (and yes, be sure to call her "Dr. Patterson") is an intelligent person. However, she could, as she herself admits, be "more caring". She created a toxic learning environment that silenced most students and "blanket" tests you on all material in the book, lecture, and on BlackBoard. Cannot say I enjoyed this class.
Dr. Patterson is the only gifted accounting professor I have ever taken. Personally, I would rather get a C in her class and actually learn something than get an A in another class and walk out with nothing. Yes, the material is hard & she is straightforward. People on here need to stop being so soft, this is a state university.
Hardest accounting class ever! Tough instructor as well. Class was based on 3 exams and a Final, 10 quizzes and a project that is divided into 3 parts. Her exams consisted of Multiple Choice, True and False and 3 written portion problems. The tests were heavily graded on the written portions. Good luck! Id say avoid this teacher if you can!
If youre thinking of taking Dr. Patterson (dont call her mrs. or professor she is DR) be warned, youre going to teach yourself. All you do in class is go over homework, there are no lectures on how to do it. She says to read the book but she teaches different than from what the books says. If you have a choice choose someone else. If not good luck!
Tough class & tough instructor! ZERO extra credit opportunities. No cheat sheet on exams unlike other professors. Class averages for exams are usually in the 50s & low 60s. Good luck!!!
Lost my 4.0 overall GPA after taking her class. Literally the rudest and the most unprofessional Professor I have taken at Fresno State. Rolls her eyes when you ask her a question about something you did not understand. Will put you down with every opportunity she gets. Missed her class? Best of luck catching up. Take her class if you want to fail
Lectures we're ok but tests were very difficult and class was Exam oriented. Fail tests, fail class. Do not take her classes.
Worst accounting professor at Fresno State. I learned nothing in the span of one semester. DO NOT TAKE HER.
Dr. Patterson is okay. She is not the best teacher but she is not that bad. Her exams are extremely difficult. There is 4 exam and a project. You have to do the hw because she picks on people. Also, she doesnt give any points for hw. There is 20 points of extra credit that you can earn by doing LS. Test are based on the book so you have to read..
Class is very very hard but you do learn a lot. The test are hard because you need to know the material to the core. You must know why things are done a certain way and the effects it has on everything. Its tough and you have to have thick skin. Study a lot, do the problems, and go over the powerpoint. She will not hold your hand. STUDY STUDY STUDY
She takes pride in how difficult she is with her 120B class. She focuses on explaining how the homework is suppose to work and not a whole lot over the book. She dosent even have the homework as a grade. Her level might not be that much of an issue if she didn't teach an majority of the 120B classes offered. Its hard not to get her as a teacher.
Professor Patterson really cares about whether her students REALLY know the subjects. She is really tough and the material is even tougher. She has no tolerance for cheating and will call people out on the spot. Classes were lecture heavy and only graded by a few things. Exams, quizzes, and midterm projects. If you decide to take her, best of luck!
The worst professor Ive ever had and Im not exaggerating. She does NO teaching. Very first day she told us to learn ourselves before class. Has lectures once a week where all she does is examples. Tests are super difficult and, like I said, she teaches nothing. You might as well buy the textbook, learn yourself, and pay no tuition. A waste.
Id give a 0 if I could. Easily the worst professor Ive ever had by a mile. Avoid her like the plague, or she will make your life miserable while youre in her class. If you take her, good luck teaching yourself and good luck finishing her crazy long exams on time (class average is always failing). Take 120B next semester if shes the only choice.
This is the worst professor I have ever had. Ever. She cares more about her reputation of being hard to pass, than caring about students actually learning. During the pandemic she restructured the class to help herself, but not the students. I get it, she wants to be tough, but she shouldnt value that over teaching. This isnt the CPA exam.
The absolute WORST professor I have ever taken in my entire life. Doesn't teach, you basically teach yourself. Can't miss more than 3 times, or grade drops one letter grade. She's not nice. Difficult course. She gives no study guide. Test related to nothing in book. Overall terrible. Mind you, I'm usually an A student, occasionally a B. AVOID HER.
Worst professor I've ever had. No sympathy what-so-ever for any of her students, and under no circumstances will she allow you to make up a missed assignment. She barely offers enough points for you to recover from a missed assignment or low test grade. She expects you to read each chapter 3 times, and gets mad when you ask questions. DO NOT TAKE!
Professor Patterson is available for Zoom sessions anytime convenient to the student. I found her teaching style excellent for understanding the content - most other professors are quick with an easy A, but you don't really learn anything. With Professor Patterson, you will learn; you will be prepared for the financial section of the CPA exam.
Let me start by saying, this is by far the worst professor I have had in my academic career. Her lectures are boring, she expects you to read, comprehend and fully understand dense material before each lecture, and when asked to explain the subject she makes you feel horrible for a simple question. I WOULD AVOID IT LIKE THE BLACK PLAGUE!
She was the worst professor I have ever taken at Fresno State. She DOES NOT CARE ABOUT HER STUDENTS, this class is an ego boost for herself to feel like she knows more than you and will talk down to you when asking questions. Her classroom environment is unwelcoming and by the end of the semester 5 people will be left from a 35 student class.
Worst ACCT prof available. Avoid at ALL costs. You WILL have to teach yourself. She doesn't lecture. Attendance is mandatory just to watch her do sample Q's for 2hr. If you must take her, prepare to study for SEVERAL extra hours. Class is based on 5pt reading HW & exams. Most of the class gives up early. I'm an A/B student, only class I've failed.
Take her if you want to ruin your chances at graduating on time
Waits till after the drop date to show her true colors. I'd say avoid her, but she teaches the majority of 120B courses anyway
Rude, bitter, and unwilling to help. Failing students is an ego boost for her. Be ready to teach yourself
If you can, avoid it at all costs. If you HAVE to take her, get ready to put in work. Exams make up majority of the grades. You can go in as motivated as you can but she will find a way to break your spirit. I went in trying to ask all the questions but was demotivated once she shuts you down and makes you feel stupid. Best advice is to study hard
Hard to avoid, so get ready to study HARD. She tests you on the smallest details. You WILL have to spend extra hours reading the textbook on your own. Her lectures are just sample questions that help very little. You will teach yourself. She seems to love breaking everyone's spirits. All good reviews were probably written by her.
Well known among alumni for all the wrong reasons. She's been terrorizing accounting students for years. Makes you feel stupid, but throws a fit when nobody wants to participate. Prides herself on being difficult, but makes no attempt at improving her teaching style or student morale. Look into CSU online or another prof if you want to graduate.
Ignore the 5-star ratings. All 1-star reviews are accurate. Her reason for being so difficult is to prepare you for the CPA exam, but all she does is practice problems on the whiteboard for 2 hours. You end up teaching yourself for the entire semester. Very strict on student attendance, yet she can run off on vacation mid-semester. Waste of time
The worst professor I've had in all my years. Even if you're an A student, you will most likely fail. She pretends to be willing to meet/help, but her condescending tone and negative attitude say otherwise. She even singles out students by name in class and asks if they "need help" when they aren't even asking for it. AVOID AT ALL COSTS
I wish i could give this professor a 0 for how difficult her class was. After a month i dropped because i felt so lost. She doesn't teach, she expects you to have already taught yourself the chapter. Nobody responds to her questions in class because if you make the smallest mistake she makes you look stupid for trying to learn. AVOID AT ALL COSTS
Do not be lazy. Tests are EXACTLY what she covers in class. 4 Exams, HW each chapter, and 1 Extra credit problem. Her grading is generous, partial credit helps a ton. I came into the class scared from the reviews. Given your a good student, shes not bad at all / is actually really nice. I can see how she can seem mean if you get offended easily.
Denise's class is no walk in the park, but with dedication and the right study tools like unstuck ai, it's manageable. While her teaching style can be stern, the exams are fair if you stay on top of the material. Avoid distractions, utilize the textbook, and you may just walk away with a solid grade.
Professor Patterson is a great teacher a lot of her reviews are not so good but I can see why. She is preparing you for the CPA Exam, she wants you to read the chapter's before you go to class so that you can work on examples in class, different from other accounting teachersbut for me worked great. If you want to pass your CPA Exam take patterson.
Doesn't require attendance, but she makes you stay for the entire class. Wish she lectured if she wanted us to stay longer. The course is very easy and good for reviewing the basics of accounting, especially if you need a quick refresher. No exams. Assignments given with answers. She is there to support students who ask questions and need help.
