SUPER HARD and SUPER not accommodating at all.
Grades are based on labs, written hw, midterms, and final. (No assignments are dropped and no extra credit opportunities are given.) Final is 35 percent of your grade, with no curve. No accomodations were made considering the difficult transition students face from online to in person courses.
Tests are very fair and representative of the material, and she provides a lot of practice in the homework and with practice midterms that are basically the same as what you would see on the test. Grades pretty particularly, but that is just stats in general, once you memorize it, pretty easy. Also gives a formula sheet that is SO helpful for exams
5 credit class that's as much effort and time as two 4 unit classes. Would not take again.
This class has NO late policy, NO dropped exams. 1 or 2 missing assignments and you're struggling for a C. Heavy workload even for a 5 credit class, especially being online. Long weekly homework assignments and weekly labs. Inflexible and not accommodating of her students at all! The content isn't too difficult, but the class is awful. Frustrating!
MATH 11 with Rava is a pretty easy A, but there is a lot of busy work (it is a 5 credit class). There is 1 textbook hw assignment and 1 lab due every week (both graded for correctness), which total to roughly 4-5 hours of work. The tests are free-response and pretty easy, especially if you attend the lectures to know what's important for studying.
other than that she has a little accent, all of her classes are organized designed. Super clear slides. I learned a lot and get interested in learning more about statistic analysis thanks to this professor. pretty with a caring heart. If you work hard you can get an A+. exam suppose to check only what you learned in class ,nothing she didn't cover
i do work for this class every single day and i'm not even a stem major. content is incomprehensible unless you're teaching yourself and even then, good luck. it's a class where you don't even know how to ask for help because you just don't know.
Stats itself is not hard to understand, but the way she teaches it is insanely confusing. Labs and homework are so time consuming and no proper feedback on why answers are wrong. None of our assignments are dropped and no late work is accepted. Absolutely no accommodations for students during the pandemic. Has no empathy for her students.
Boring lectures, lots of work outside of class, homework and online labs combined are worth more than the 2 midterms. Provides practice exams with questions that are exactly like the real exam, just different numbers. However, final grade in the class is based off how you perform relative to the peers in your class rather than normal grading scale.
The mean score of one of the midterms was 63%. If that doesn't say enough, I don't know what else will. The examples she provides in class are also so simplified in comparison to the homework and test questions. She is also insanely strict with her tests, as thinks everyone is trying to cheat.
There is too much homework and they're all graded by correctness, you'll get burnt out very quickly from the sheer amount. Not including the labs in addition to lengthy homework problems both in the textbook and online. Trying to maintain a decent grade is so unbelievably hard that doing your best doesn't get you anywhere in this class.
Unlike the previous comments, I felt that this professor made this class a lot more bearable than it is. Math 11 itself is a class that is very heavy as it involves a lot of work. However, she always responded to emails, was very approachable and a good lecturer. Midterms and finals were very similar to lecture material and the practice questions.
Thee professor makes the subject quite interesting and makes it easy to learn. HW, lectures and practice materials representative of lecture. This class is 5 units and a lot of work so be prepared! The only problem is that there is no extra credit or late submissions. Love the prof!
The homework and labs do take some time to complete, but they are not terribly difficult. TAs will help a lot with lab questions, so go to office hours to get your work checked. Lectures are clear and slides are informative. DO THE PRACTICE EXAMS! They are the same as the midterms and finals.
I was fine w/ this class til it hit me that the final was worth 35% of our grade..Im about to graduate & have taken many classes where the final was worth A LOT but only b/c we didnt get hw. The hw/labs take so long to do so I dont get why it contributes so little. I had a solid A all quarter & a B- on the final dropped me a letter grade.
It is a 5 unit class. The HW and the Labs are pretty time-consuming and graded on correctness, I would make sure you do well on those as they make up 15% and 20% of your grade. As for the midterms and finals, they were similar to the practice tests Professor provided. Just make sure you understand the concepts and you should be good.
Doing well on all exams and the course is impossible without being proactive on Homework deadlines, and the course becomes a joke otherwise since the material builds on itself. Time consuming labs require visual experimentation and conclusions (not tested on), while the Homeworks def require outside learning. AP Stats book and Khan helped a lot
Many labs and assignments. Midterms and finals completely make or break your grade. Don't recommend it unless you're trying to lower your GPA.
The labs and homework are incredibly time-consuming, most frustrating thing about the course is that only certain parts of the assignments get graded rather than everything. She always asks for questions during lectures and the old exams are pretty much the same as the current ones. Not the greatest professor, but solid.
Math 11 consists of a lot of work, so choosing this class is a time investment. However, her midterms and exams are pretty fair because she gives practice exams that are almost identical to the ones you are going to take. No cheat sheet on her tests and all of them were in person.
Her midterms and finals are really fair and almost identical to lecture material and practice. She is understanding. Class is 5 units and hence there is a lot of work but she helps you out whenever needed and is always willing to listen. Lectures are worth going to. Amazing prof!
Do not skip the lectures! They are important to understanding the material and getting good grades. There is a lot of homework - do not procrastinate. I didn't attend discussion, but you should if you have questions. Don't take her quizzes lightly, they are not easy. Don't skip out anything and you can get a good grade. Not overly difficult.
easy to understand lectures. attendance is graded. homework assignments are time consuming (it's 5 units), but not particularly difficult. very similar to ap stats in terms of material
Very fair professor. I found lectures to be very clear and the class was very organized. Midterms and final make your grade and labs are very time consuming, but the class is 5 units and I found the tests to be fair (not easy, but fair). She was also very kind and seemed to care about our understanding. I would definitely take her again!
I recommend Professor Rava--she gives informative lectures in her 40-minute timeframe while encouraging questions throughout. The Professor taught statistics straightforwardly and understandably. There are two midterms, making studying for the final much easier. There is an extensive formula sheet, so it is more application than memorization.
5-unit class, so it's a lot of assignments (homework and labs weekly), but the exams are representative of lectures and homework (she gives practice exams as well). Lectures are easy to digest. Graded on two midterms, final, homework, and labs. Two different grading schemes, the alternative one has dropped midterm and a higher-graded final.
Weekly homework & labs that take a lot of time and feel repetitive. She drops your lowest for each. 2 grading schemes (2 midterms + final or 1 midterm + final). Exams are extremely similar to practice exams, so if you do those you will be well-prepared. Lectures are digestible. The calculus involved is not hard, and is only used for 2 topics.
It's a 5-unit course so all the labs and homework are expected. Labs and homework grades raised my grade up a lot so they're important to complete. She is a really sweet person and the practice exams she posts from past quarters are practically the exam, which makes the exams really easy if you study using those. I would definitely take her again.
Lectures are disorganized and incomprehensible, no Piazza, no professor office hours, and doesn't even post annotated lecture slides to Canvas. Homeworks are also poorly worded and graded entirely for accuracy. Grading scheme is also very unforgiving as there's only one midterm and a final that are each worth a huge part of your grade. Ridiculous
The material isn't bad and you'll be fine as long as you go through the lecture notes, but the grading isn't very merciful. There's only one midterm and no curve. I did poorly on the midterm, but got A's on the homeworks and the final, yet ended up with an 89 and she wouldn't bump it up. You're out of luck if you don't do well on the midterm.
"the f... is that" mandetory discussion
Genuinely don't know why she is rated so low, I thought she was great. Her exams are very similar to the practice exams (she gives you the one from the previous quarter/year) and though the labs are a lot of work, it's not super difficult to get through. I definitely recommend her
Genuinely hated this class. Lots of homework (double the amount on week 10), two midterms, mandatory discussion attendance, and a final.
Very good math professor; the class was a time sink, though. Make sure you're not taking too many credits when you're taking math 11 cause I spent like 10-15hr outside of class every week :(((
Stats is not real math. Shoutout to her a**hole TAs who graded everything and took off points for the smallest reason.
Her lectures are very organized and concepts are easy to understand. I spent ~3 hrs for labs and 2-4 hrs for homework weekly, and both help you understand lecture materials. She also gives you a bunch of practice exams that prepare you well for the tests. It can be a lot of work if you start to procrastinate, but it's not that hard.
Professor Rava provides poor explanations of concepts and assigns an insane workload. The labs, written homework, and online homework have nothing to do with each other and do not correlate. Exams are filled with grammatical mistakes that make just reading questions difficult and are filled with trick questions. TAs made frequent grading mistakes.
bruh she was BAD. I took her first quarter and my class failed both midterms (second scored a 58% avg.) and wouldn't curve! lectures are boring and there is SM hw. I scored a 5 on both calc ab and bc so im pretty good at math but struggled hard in this class. failed both midterms (below 50) and had to pull a 90% to get a B.
She does not podcast lectures but even if you dont go, she uploads her annotated slides to canvas. There are 2 midterms and a final with two final grade options to include one or both midterms with the final grade weighted differently for each option. Lectures were not to hard to digest. Lots of hw bc its a 5 unit class not hard its time consuming.
Insane workload and the HWs have nothing to do with each other and the tests nothing like the HWs. It is nearly impossible to finish the exams in the time allotted as there's about 60 questions to answer in 50 mins. She said on the first lecture not to email her with any questions and she's not accessible outside of class
Seriously, is she the only Math 11 professor at UCSD? Because if that's the case then we are all screwed. She is literally the worst professor ever. I understand it is a 5 unit course, but man the workload is insane.
Worst professor in UCSD stats courses. Terrible lectures, no annotated slides, no grade round up and bad attitudes to students. Midterm and final are very proof-heavy and take up 60% of the grades.
Insane, but manageable workload. Rava is a great lecturer and is always open to questions. Learned a lot about stats. Lectures not recorded, but annotated slides uploaded. PLEASE, use her, and especially the lab TA's Office hours (both on Zoom) and you'll succeed in this class. drops lowest hw, lab, and 2 discussion. Very caring and sweet imo.
Rava's lecture slides are simple and easy to understand. She posts annotated slides but not recorded lectures. Her tests are mostly FRQ with only a few MCQ and follow examples from her lecture slides, making it easy to answer if you practice. Homework got really heavy at the end of the quarter and discussions were mandatory with 2 free absences.
Personally could not follow lectures (feels very slow to me), though annotated lecture slides were very helpful in studying. This class is easy enough to self-study and do well. Has a heavy workload (due to labs taking a lot of time), but is manageable.
Rava's a great lecturer and made topics much easier to follow. She posts podcasts, annotated slides, and past exams which are all super useful to use when studying. The workload is insane (weekly lab, written/online hw) but kinda understandable since the class is 5 units. She lowk seems scary via her emails/Canvas but in-person she's super sweet!
Her lectures are very organized and connected each topic really well. Will post annotated slides, lecture audio, and past exams on canvas for review. Will show how to solve sample problems during class. Super sweet and patient if you go ask her questions after class. The workload is a bit heavy, but it's manageable once you get used to it.
She has a good command over the material. Mathematical statistics is hard, so do not underestimate the assignments and exams. This class is difficult, but I like her lectures. The assignments are representative of the lectures, but be very careful on exams because those are more challenging. I would recommend if you're looking for a challenge.
Lectures were very clear and correlated to what will be asked on homework/midterm/final. She said something in lectures regarding the material and that same comment showed up as a question on the midterm. So long as you show up to class, show up to discussions, and do the homework AND PRACTICE THE PROOFS, you will do fine All around solid 9/10
Attending classes is very helpful as she does not video podcast, only audio. Also, be mindful of exact wording in answers because she can be picky.
Attendance is not mandatory, but lectures are very helpful, especially because she only has audio podcasts. Grading is not super strict, but pay attention to how she wants you to word your answers. Overall, not the worst teacher, and the class is relatively easy.
The workload isn't bad at all (anybody who says it is lacks time management skills). Lectures can be a bit confusing and sometimes she will contradict herself. She gives you practice exams to study and they are super helpful so use those to your advantage. If you have taken AP Stats before, this course should be a breeze--it is a lot of review.
Lectures are helpful to attend however first part of course is very similar to AP Stats. Professor is super sweet and goes slowly during class, taking time to answer students' questions. Wording on tests can be VERY tricky and midterms/final often do not mimic practice tests (though they are helpful for studying). Workload is extremely manageable.
Solid professor, personally not a big fan. everything you need to know to pass this class is in the lectures and homeworks. Her class was so hard! it takes studying every single detail to pass this class, there is no question that she won't throw at you. So careful w tests which consist of 1midterm and 1final, makes up about 80% of final grade.
I honestly found Professor Rava to be great as the podcasts are now completely recorded and the tests were reflective of the material in class. If people did the previous years midterms and finals and studied the in class questions, the tests are really not that hard. Good lecturer
Her lectures are ok, hard to understand at times. I dont think shes a bad lecturer at all, but the exams were not really as reflective of the practice ones, though some questions were similar. Shes not a bad professor, but just take note that the average is a C+, and there's hardly a curve. Just make sure you prioritize this over any other class.
Expected a lot out of this person. Unfortunately, very underwhelming; lectures were unnecessarily dense and rushed over critical content while focusing on totally useless work (i.e. continually redefining what it means to reject a null hypothesis but glossing over how distribution proofs work). Absolutely not her fault, but hard to understand :(
Honestly, one of the worst professors I've had at UCSD. I did well on the midterm and all homeworks, but Rava's lectures are useless; I educated myself on 99% of the material. Avoid at all costs, and if you're forced to take 181B with her, good luck.
The class content is hard, but to me her lectures and logic were easy to follow. Homework problem sets were difficult, especially R questions, but tests were easier. The tests were also fair and tended to cover the main topics we covered in class, it's not like she asked questions on niche topics. Overall a solid professor
Huge majority of grade from tests. Recorded lectures with good explanation and intuition of topics. Good quality lecture notes and slides, although the updated slides were not posted after each class, but accessible through recordings. Class subject was hard, but she made things understandable. Proof heavy on tests, but all proofs were from lecture
THE WORST professor at UCSD. If you decide to take a class and see rava as the professor, avoid her like the plague. Even if it means you need to take an extra quarter it's worth the money. Decided to go no cheat sheets for the class then made finals harder than previous finals. Rather sell my soul to the devil than take her again.
Rava was the course coordinator for Math 11 this quarter, despite not having taught any sessions whatsoever. The entire course was taught by John Peca-Medlin, and she went out of her way to make sure the grade averages in our course were sub-par by prohibiting any significant grade-scale shift. It's clear she has no sympathy for students whatsoever
I remember the labs&homework were always a drag to do.There was so many things to do in that class, but if it helps I did them all the day they were due,so def manageable.I rarely went to lecture but put in loads of effort, curves significantly help I got a D on both the final&midterm but an A+ on the homework,labs&1st midterm, it all balances out.
She was a pretty good professor. The class itself was pretty easy and she did cover all the content from exams. There is definitely a lot of work outside class with homework and labs every week, but that's just part of the class.
take stats at community college not here.
She is very organized in her lectures, BUT that's because she usually reads from her notes when lecturing, sometimes making her lectures not seem engaging. Plus, she might not seem very easy to approach. Her exams are tricky and focus a lot on the details; therefore, the average scores for the exams are often very low (midterm 2 avg 56%).
nice person & lectures easy to follow. but when i say take math 11 at cc, do it. its turkey break but she assigned work to do. its the same type of work we are assigned every week, but it's tedious and takes kinda long. i want to relax at home but cant. middies r alright. 2nd one was difficult, mean was 56%. i regret taking this course here
All she does i read the slides and then gives you a shit ton of homework every week, and her TA's are a-holes and stingy with the grading. Take another teacher. Second midterm straight out of hell and does NOT curve anything. Lwk fire her ass. The coding part of the class is so unnecessary.
Might be the first class I fail at UCSD since transferring. Prof reads and quickly guides through easy problems in class, but places difficult/tricky problems on exams. Exam 2 might as well had been written in a different language. PLEASE avoid this prof if you care about your GPA, I regret taking her sm
Her lectures are organized, and she is patient when answering questions. So long as you are on pace or stay ahead, you will be fine. There are three main homework assignments (a lab coding assignment, online homework through Pearson, and written homework) that take time, so prepare for that. Exams have tricky wording and trip many students up.
The class has three main assignments: R-coding labs, Pearson online homework, and written homework. Workload was manageable with about two assignments a week, but the labs felt pointless since R isn't even tested on. The professor reads quickly, her 9s look like Gs, and the second midterm was brutal with no curve. Take this at community college!
She is ok at best. R-coding is completely unnecessary and time consuming (but I enjoyed learning it). Homework was helpful. Barely enough time for the midterms and you are expected to really know the concepts. Her lectures were great and informative. Attendance optional but HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. DONT SKIP or you're cooked. 🥀💔
Her class was ok, attendance isn't mandatory. Her homework is both online and written, more heavy on the online since some questions have multiple parts ranging from 2-10 parts. Also her handwriting is sometimes hard to read, u can easily confuse her 5 for (S) or 9 as a (g). she does have an accent so it might be hard to understand her sometimes.
Honest Review: Professor Denise is concise on her talking points; she emphasizes key distinctions in confusing concepts. She gets straight to the point when answering students' questions. Test questions, both mult. choice and open-ended, may be tricky. Labs are fine with help of TA. HW is at times tough b/c of its TA's nit-picky deductions.
Do not take her. Take this course at a cc, truly, you will thank me for the headache I saved you from doing SO MUCH damn homework and the pointless labs. Exams are difficult; the MCs are meant to trick you 99% of the time. I never felt ready for any exam; she put the hardest kinds of problems on them.
Honestly, Rava was a good teacher overall. She's very knowledgable in stats and does a good job of creating good lecture slides and lecture notes. The workload was pretty heavy, which can be expected for a 5 unit course, and your grade is heavily dependent on how well you do on the midterms and final. She does have a grade replacement plan, though.
pls take this at cc. midterm avg was 50%. Barely gives any practice problems and tests us on questions she barely goes over.
The test is not difficult as long as you review and do practice test. The instruction is clear, and all you need to do is to follow instruction, go to lecture, then you have a good grade.
If you have more than 168 hours in your week, you might be fine. Coding assignments and homeworks take a ridiculous amount of time and don't actually cover the topics required to know for exams. I would recommend staying on top of studying, attending lectures, and praying you know the stuff she's gonna drop on you with no warning.
Class was decently hard. Midterm 1 was not bad, while Midterm 2 had an average of 56%. There is online hw, written hw, and coding labs, so the workload is extremely heavy. She does have a grade replacement plan where you can drop a midterm score and have the final weighted more. Overall, it was a decently hard class.
Written hw is reflective of exams, online hw is mainly for mastery of concepts. Nit-picky and trick MCQ on exams require specific conceptual knowledge. Weekly labs were largely unrelated to the exams but were part of the grade. Rewatch lectures and do the past exams that she provides to study for exams, as the format is similar.
Lab and homework sets due each week so just manage your time well. Attendance isn't mandatory but I highly recommend attending, prof is extremely nice and great at answering questions. Go to discussions!!
Wrap it up 56% avg on mid2 and 67% avg on final. If u love ur gpa, don't take this class, esp bc it's a 5 unit course. No idea if there's a curve
Homeworks were so long, despite being nothing like her tests. Labs are interesting but also nothing to do with tests. Practice exams are somehow also nothing like the actual exams. Exams ask questions about content in lecture that wasn't taught. Teacher is unfortunately also a little sassy. Overall hell and you should take it in community college.
Nonsensical.
Do not take this professor if you care about your GPA; her/TAs are very strict graders. Lectures felt uninspiring and boring, and just felt like she was reading off a script. Her communication style is very cold, and be aware that your emails might just be sent to her trash can.
Ok lecturer, lectures somewhat helpful but very monotone. Labs have nothing to do with class and homeworks are long, but I think that's all MATH 11 since it's 5 units. Doesn't have a clear grading scale/cutoffs, even after the final is graded. Class was mostly just annoying. Would not take if you have other time consuming classes.
Decent lecturer, second midterm was mad difficult considering how lightly she covered the concepts tested on it. Labs have nothing to do w class, but they're easy if you've done coding before. Her late policy is buns and dropped my grade since she didn't let me make up missed work because I got off the waitlist later. An overall alright class
Good professor, tough class. Ask questions after lectures and sit in the front row for motivation. Study hard for midterms (especially the 2nd) and the final (do all online/written HW, lecture problems, practice materials/tests) and it's doable.
Lectures are actually pretty clear, organized, and easy to follow. Labs don't really match what we do in lecture and there are a LOT of them. The workload is heavy w/ both written and online homework. For exams, she gives past exams, but the actual tests are harder. Syllabus says there's a curve, but i don't think we have this year (93 = A)
Teacher does not have a set grading scale; do not know grade is until it is on your transcript. Her labs took forever and were not helpful for the tests. Discussions unhelpful. Required specific answers from general questions. Exams were harder than past exams. Didn't curve tests or final grade even with a ~50 avg midterm 2 and ~65 avg final.
Order of topics was confusing, I would have done severely worse if not for doing stats in hs. Her questions are vague but rubric is strict, even for homework. Not much extra credit opportunity (only one point for midterm 2). Hw isnt put in as an assignment so does not show up on to do list on canvas, hw is in 3 different places which sucked.
Very exam-driven lecture style: a lot of example questions during lectures. A LOT OF homework that require you to pay attention to details. Slightly unfair & strange grading criteria. Each midterm only worths 25-30 marks yet contributes ~15% of your total grade. Overall not recommended.
