She is a terrible teacher, if u can't sit down for very long without moving at all this class isnt for you. Unless you wanted to catch up on some sleep then go ahead and have her as a teacher. you hav to REALLY like old art.
way too in depth on old art-quite boring way too much material to study for exam even though she doesnt grade very hard
TOO MUCH MATERIAL!! Who cares!! I like art but not for as much work as she gives. She's nice and likes what she does but she makes it very boring-too much work for a gen ed class!!!!!!
even though i am taking this course with an honors contract i find it to be understandable and interesting. i think her teaching style is very helpfull and the material she covers riveting.
She knows art! Great class, put togehter well! She is also very helpful! I would take another of her classes.
I loved this class. The prof. was great. if you art history doesn't interest you don't take this for a gen. ed. class! I stayed interested through the whole semester. You have to write one research paper but it is no big deal. let's you use notecard test
Very understaning
Her class is somewhat hard, but you really learn about art, and are able to remember what your have learned.
Rogers is probably one of the most interesting art history teachers at mirmar or mesa. She makes it easy to pass, there are two big assignments that are pretty easy. She wants you to pass and she offers extra credit to get your grade up. Highly recommended.
If you are looking for a REAL review, this is the one. You are prob saying to yourself Besterchart or Rogers right? Well pick Rogers, this woman is easy to understand and will, yes teach you an in-depth analysis of what you need to learn in her class, 4 exams, drops the lowest of the first 3. 2 Visual Analysis, plenty EC, 4 HW's, & Essay.
I took this class online.4exams,lots of essays.Way too much work for an art course in my opinion. She doesnt grade hard tho so as long as you do your assignments u'll pass
Took it online. Way too much work for an art class. 3 exams & 1 final all requiring short answer and a lengthy essay. 4 reading critiques in essay format. Museum review in essay format. 1 quiz each week, and a few other assignments. Good teacher, responds quickly to ?'s, grades fairly, wants you to succeed. Just be prepared for a lot of work.
I enjoyed art before, but Denise Rogers took it to a whole new level for me. She requires a LOT of work, but she's clear and wants you to succeed. She gives you all possible test questions in advance - really study and write out the answers in advance, and you'll succeed. I loved this class and recommend it for anyone into art.
I took her art 111 class online. Her workload is heavy but nothing is too difficult. Quiz every week and an exam every few weeks. She gives the questions in advance though, but prepare to spend a LOT of time answering all of them. Six page essay required. She really keeps you busy, lets put it that way.
Native American Art - a LOT of work for 3 units - tests (with lots of memorizing slides), a museum assignment, a 6+ page paper... way more work than I thought it should be, although it was interesting. You just have to stay on top of it all if you want to get a good grade!
took online course... wow, i found myself relying heavily on powerpoints and disscussions online, the work load was heavy and a little confusing. she gives poor judgement on how much time we need for tests, only 10 minutes. it was horrible. dont take the online class. i failed when i thought i was doing alright!
I took 3 art history classes together and this 111 was more work than those classes combined! The quizzes are every week, and are moderately hard. The discussions aren't hard (every 2 weeks). The essays (part of the tests) where graded easy but the test portion (every 4 weeks) was really challenging. SHe does give you study guides - do those!
I've taken 3 classes with Prof. Rogers both online and on campus. There is a heavy work load but we are in college to learn something and when I finished the class I actually did. Do the work and you'll get an A, not rocket science. I love art and I love it even more after taking her classes. She's very knowledgeable and loves what she does.
I loved this class. Her lectures were great and very interesting. She uses a web sites for homework, essays, and study guides, plus uploads her power point lectures on to website. I recorded her lectures and replayed them while looking over power point. Study and you'll get an A, I did. plus drops 1 of 4 tests and gives tons of extra credit.
easy class and laidback, helpful teacher, do everything with somewhat of a compreshension and youll get an A
Great teacher in terms of style- clear, interesting, straightforward. She just thinks this is the only class I have. Tests consist of cramming 50 artists, 150 questions, and 2 ESSAYS (but we only have 10 slides, 15 questions, and 1 essay during the test). A bunch of busy work. If you have a full load, don't take. Gives a bunch of extra cred though.
She is a nice lady. Test consists of 10 slides. you have to name the artist, period, style, and medium. Then you have short answer questions and essay. Its a boring class and seems like alot of info, but she is a easy grader. She helped me out alot. I thought I was going to fail, but she gave me a C. You also have a museum assignment and research p
Very reasonable prof. Class is tough b/c it's a lot of info and memorization but she has review sheets and lists of the artists/ pieces you should know so you know what's coming and what to ask questions about. You can have a notecard for the exams too. They're mostly based on lecture though so don't miss class!
I wasn't going to take this class because I had no interest in art. But I added her class because her lectures interested me! It was hard not to fall asleep just because I'm not a morning person, but as long ad you print out her study guides in advance and fill them out while she lectures, you can pass easily. I did this and always studied the night before, and I aced the course. Don't be lazy and do every assignment (there aren't many). You don't even have to read the book. Leniant grader
Do not take a class with this professor online. The study guides she provides would be helpful if the answers were in the textbook or lecture, but there are several where you'll spend hours going through her "lectures" (terrible power points) and the texbook and not find the answer. This is the most frustrating class I've taken.
ALOT of work for a Art History class but if your smart you can find your way around it! Did not learn anything about art and managed an A!
the class is alot of work!! teacher really isnt that bad but the way she teaches is very confusing at times and she is very jumpy. requires a lot of studying for each exam, like remembering 40 art pieces(only 10 on test....) tons of questions(10 on test...) and such. to much work for a ge class and just made cont. art boring to me.
The class suffers from too many countries and time periods of art crammed into one semester. The lectures are at light speed and if you blink an eye you've missed something important. The class is hard if you try to learn it all, but manageable if you know what you need to learn to pass. Professor is knowledgeable and gives plenty of extra credit.
Terrible Class!! Avoid like the Black Plague, worst class I have ever had, teacher is boring. Class is extremely difficult for an art history class.
I'm guessing the posts are not from art majors...I found the course very interesting and Prof. Rogers very knowledgeable and professional. If you're not interested in Art History find another G.E. because us AH majors appreciate the detail. Yes its a lot of work, we're in college to learn and I learned a lot of useful information.
Yes, the class is hard. Don't be a slacker. If you come to class, take notes, and do the study guides (They tell you EXACTLY what you need to know) you will get an A. Plenty of extra credit opportunities. She's really knowledgeable. Love her classes.
This class was pretty hard for GE for me, but i would highly recommend it to art majors. She does try to cram a little too much info into "arts of the asian continents," but is clear about what she teaches. There is a lot of work, but if you do it you should be okay since she provides exactly what you should know. She is extremely knowledgeable.
She's a great professor. She knows what she is talking about, doesn't cram information, and is very clear on what she is teaching. The only downside is that it is a very hard class. You really have to work hard in order to pass. Overall, she is a nice and awesome professor. Take her, but expect hard work! Don't if you're a slacker.
Helped me finally "get" modern art. Lots of studying, but she tells you EXACTLY what she's going to test on. Lots of extra credit available. If I had room in my schedule, I'd take more of Denise's classes. If I had it to do over, I'd buy the old text book. Also bought the "recommended" books, and they were helpful. Good prof for open-minded student
I hate this site, but I came to put a good word in for those who are considering taking her classes. Her teaching style honestly sets you up for transfer to a four-year. Her lectures are thorough and writing assignments are a lot of work, but plan ahead and by the end, you will have learned AND RETAINED so much. She's A MUST for Art History majors!
SO MUCH WORK!! Professor Rogers gives heavy amounts of work for this class! Also, tests are really hard and super specific. Although she is a nice lady, honestly the extra credit is the reason I passed her class. Regret taking this class. GETTING A GOOD GRADE IS NOT EASY, don't take this class unless you want to lower your GPA:-)
This class is SUPER tough. I've been at Mesa some time now and this is one of the hardest classes I've ever taken, no joke. She gives a lot of work. She is a very nice lady but its pretty tough to say its not a GE class. On the test the essays are worth 40 points by itself. Although, she does give a lot of extra credit.
It's been three weeks in our accelerated class and she hasn't graded anything yet. I emailed her over a week ago about something important pertaining to our test and she never emailed back.... I REALLY regret taking this class. Or at least with her. It would be a nice class if she was helpful at all. I feel like we have no professor.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS!! Very difficult to follow. She changes the syllabus, so for an online class it was very confusing. Doesn't really help or answer too many questions clearly and directly. She states that test answers should be as brief as possible but when you are brief she takes off points. Way too much work and studying, take any other class!
STAY AWAY! if you work you won't pass. The workload is overwhelming and take hours on end to complete for only a part of it. She takes forever to answer your questions. But if you call her out on it she has an email ready immediately to send you to defend herself! 50% dropped her class. Even when she makes mistakes she justifies it. Resets tests
Don't take this class! You will spend hours doing her work, running around in circles! You won't learn anything, the workload won't allow it. If you have a job, you prob won't get a good grade. She's rude, makes tons of mistakes and then gets upset with you for asking about the mistakes. She does not help, she just tells you to look in the book.
I took this class during the summer thinking i could get a g.e. out of the way. It was pretty tough. There is a lot of reading and 4 discussion posts and a lot of other work to do - handouts, powerpoint lectures, and ask her questions. She's not going to let you slack off, it's college not high school. I learned a lot and had to work for it.
I don't know how she has such a good rating. This is the hardest class I've ever had and the teacher makes it harder. You will write 5 papers, plus her discussion posts are essays. She always contradicts herself, and she changes the syllabus whenever she wants. You will read and read, she doesn't teach. She also has an attitude when you questions
This was a pretty fun class and not really that hard. The workload was heavy, but it's art history... I learned a lot, but I also enjoy reading and don't need the professor there to hold my hand. She was easy on grading for the most part, turning in assignments late wasn't an issue. I thought this was a pretty good online course.
This class teaches you how to study! Assignments are pretty clear, you can't slack off or wait until the last minute to study. Heavy workload, several papers, written critiques, quizzes and exams. But she gives you study sheets for exams which are extremely helpful.
Gives handouts for exams, quizzes online plus reading. Pretty straight forward just put in the effort.
I am not really sure where to start with what is wrong. The text book seems to provide insufficient information. You WILL have to research on your own for each topic! If you are looking to just learn about art (not your major) don't take this class! There is so much it is very difficult to really retain any of it. Originally I was very excited...
She guides your study by giving 3 study guides per exam: a list of slides, a questions list, and a glossary.. She does not give you the answers to memorize- you have to read and hunt them down. She also gives a list of essay questions, one of which will be on the exam. Don't be a slacker and you'll be fine. It's college-she does not dumb it down
This class is best for art majors - don't expect it to be easy. If you don't know how to study, this class will make you learn how to do it, IF you put in the effort. Hardest thing is memorizing the art slides and being able to write an essay for every test. You can't wait to the last minute to do the reading or ignore the worksheets.
A must take professor for Art History Majors. She will prepare you for what lies ahead as far as reading and writing. There is a guy in my group and he is taking it for general ed. He says it's a hard class for him, but she makes it interesting. You must answer questions in the study guide they are on the test. You must look up the slides. READ
It was an online class. She was unresponsive to emails... tf.. The exams were 30 questions. The study guides were 150- 200 questions.. Very helpful. She basically raised 3 kids and commuted for 2 hours everyday while getting her degrees. Has no realistic expectations of her students.
Best for art majors planning to transfer to a 4-yr school. This is not a class for dummies. Not a class for whiners. Not for anyone looking for an easy GE class. She will not dumb anything down just for you. You will get the grade you earned. If you want to learn what a college class is really like, take this one.
I am so glad that I never have to take another art history class haha. Lots of work, readings, papers, and tests. Easy A but so much meaningless work that no one can definitively prove.
This is the worst class that I have taken at Mesa College. The professor assigns an overwhelming amount of written assignments, yet she doesn't take the time to properly grade them. Lectures are so boring, people often fall asleep, the atmosphere is dull and uninspiring. She has no clue on how to teach; she just reads from PowerPoint slides.
This professor is not an instructor, but a curator. She thinks that just providing students with a bunch of information online is actually teaching. Do not take this class! The professor is inconsistent, unfair, unprofessional in her grading practices. Do not waste your time with this class. Boring and lengthy. You will regret taking this class.
This professor prepares students for the next level. It's a tough course with lots of reading and writing. It's what I expected for a college level class. In class discussions help prepare for the exams. She will always respond to questions and provide study guides. Good for art majors.
This is NOT a 100 level class. The workload is much more advanced, similar to a 300 level art history class I took several years ago. Homework, preparation and trying to figure out her questions took more time than my other 3 classes combined. Great material and very interesting. Her grading is fair, and you'll learn a lot. But be ready.
One of the worst experiences I've ever had with a course. The professor is very late on grading assignments, assigns an insane workload for a 100 class, and even has some questions that you need to find from outside sources. The workload was more than all my classes put together x4, not exaggerating. DO NOT TAKE IF POSSIBLE.
If you're lazy, a serial procrastinator, and don't even like art, then DO NOT take this class. This is a VERY hard class. You're going to have to put a lot of time and effort to pass this class, but there are extra credit options. LOTS of papers, in-class activities, and presentations! Great professor, just a very hard class.
She is extremely generous however it's a lot of coursework for an art class. She is very specific to what she expects on exams so she grades tough however She lets you use notes on exams. Expect a 6 page paper, a few 3-5 page papers, and to prepare an oral presentation.
DO NOT take this class if you only need it for a required credit and looking for an "give away". I took it because it was required and assumed it would be easy. This class is equivalent to a 300 level art history class. She is very "in to" modern art and enthusiastic about it but is not very well organized and/or direct on what she wants from you.
This class requires a lot of note taking of tests. It is tough to get an A but manageable. 3 tests, research paper, presentation and museum assignment. She is a good teacher but the class is a bit unorganized. Some of the material won't be covered by test time and she will tell you the class before. She needs to narrow down the study guide sooner.
Denise clearly enjoys teaching art, but the class is a bit boring. 3 tests ( 1 drop), research paper, and a write up about a piece. overall the class is not hard at all. She tells you what will be on the test, test questions are 1:1 whats on the study guide. Take notes on lectures and you'll never need to open the book. lots of extra credit
The class was pretty easy honestly, as it primarily consisted of 4 short essays (2 pages), like 10 open book quizzes, and a 6 page research paper. The lectures however were incredibly boring, and you honestly dont benefit much from attending class. All you need is the book and to look at her power points online and you'll do fine.
Denise is a nice person, but not as great of an instructor. She seems to be a bit disorganized with her files and class schedule. Very difficult to follow along during her lectures - she flips back and forth between slides, and relies on students to fill in the blanks. If someone asks a question, she doesn't respond with a straight answer.
This is not a hard class. Lectures are really boring, but they are not mandatory. THERE IS SO MUCH WORK. 4 essays, 10 online quizzes, a 6 page research paper, an oral presentation. There are no in class tests, which is super nice, but I hope you like writing papers.. Easy class if you like busy work
I had Denise for an online intersession class, meaning 4 weeks. To be honest I expected the workload to be way worse. We had a short essay each week, and two big papers due at the end of the 4 weeks. Textbook access code was required. I didnt listen to the online lectures and I did fine. Most work was available from the beginning. Nothing crazy.
Research outside of the book for exams. Learn how to look deeper into the textbook for others ; answers are not always obvious. Also use her lectures and powerpoints for other answers. Will give extra time for assignments and exams if you ask. Sometimes available to answer questions on discussion board or through blackboard messaging not email.
I took an online course this summer, and I'm 100 percent sure it would be better if it weren't online. I'm used of using blackboard, and I expected it to be just as organized online as the other classes. Not the case. There's about 6 papers, and you can only access certain essays through announcements. A huge pain. She doesn't grade quickly either.
Took her this summer. There's lots of reading to do, 4 essays, 1 long essay that requires you to go to a library and research through books (which I had no time to do), Museum visit, few extra credit work, and she takes long to grade. Its not a bad class unless you're someone that is ok with reading 2-4 hours daily, and finishes some work on time.
I took her online African Art class and it was a little harder than most online classes. She provides extra credit though which allowed me to get an A. You don't have to buy a textbook since she provides all the readings. The class was very interesting and worth while.
The best teacher I have ever had take her you cannot go wrong!I had a reakly terrible life changing event happen and she worked with me!
I've actually taken this professor for two classes now, African Art and Asian Art. Her lectures are outstanding. If you have a genuine interest in art I strongly recommend you take her. Her knowledge plus her passion for art made this a class I looked forward to every single time.
I don't know why Prof. Rogers has such low reviews! She is so kind and really cares about her students success. She will work with you if you need help. Grade consists of three essays, research & museum paper, & a few online quizzes (w/study guides). Extra credit offered! I am taking her again for Asian Art online, I highly recommend Prof. Rogers.
Most frustrating online classes I have taken. Her lectures in the beginning where lengthy by the end it was like she didn't care. I didn't use the textbook. She does this thing where she up loads everything last minute and expects you to take the quiz & write an essay in 24 hrs. Due dates not the same in syllabus/calendar/mygrades. Broken links.
This was such a good class. We went over different art from different countries throughout history. Exams are pretty easy but you do them at home. If you miss class you will fall behind so go to class. She offers enough extra credit and make up that you can get an A as long as you try.
Denise knows ART! I wasn't looking forward to this class, yet it turned out to be a class I looked forward too! Complete your assignments, don't procrastinate and it will be smooth sailing. I was most inspired learning about performance art. Preview if you're interested, Yoko Ono "Cut Piece," and Yves Klein "Blue Women Art"
Prof Rogers is a wonderful professor. I 1st met her when I 1st attended Mesa College and decided 2 give myself a challenge by taking her honors class for Art 109. To say the least, both the regular class and honors class were easy. As long as you showed up to class everyday (only twice a wk 4 her class) and do study guide, you're guaranteed an A.
One of the greatest professors who truly knows about art. Although theres a good amount of work its very interesting if you love history. Upside to the workload is that she's an easy grader and allows students to really voice their views and opinions. Also has extra credit. Super nice and is always laughing so theres rarely a dull moment.
You have a quiz for every unit, and have to write 4 papers. Her quizzes are hard and something you have to get used too. She ask for a lot of detail. Overall it is a fun class and she is super easy to get in touch with and responds fast. She post her powerpoint and articles to read. You must read them. It's all asynch but you need to set time aside
Overall there was a lot of reading but a good teacher and there are no trick questions on the tests. If you manage to have a good schedule and study habits, you'll be fine passing the class. Good material overall.
I learned a lot. She is very knowledgeable. Nice class
Discussions are fun and engaging but the exams are a joke. Misspells words, incomplete exam questions asking you to refer to an image that isn't there. Asks super vague questions and gives weird answers that aren't even in the textbook. I could write an essay on how bad this class is. It's an easy A but don't expect to learn anything.
Overall, I liked the amount of content she gave us, as it helped me get a good grasp on the themes of contemporary art. I mostly ended up just needing to use the textbook though. Part of it might be because I took an online course from her. I wish there would've been a greater connection between her and her students.
Unorganized, missing artists that are on quizzes. Long lectures waste of time. Just because you are a nice person and love art does not mean you are a good professor to teach students art. I do not recommend the study guide (that she recommends) and that is because it was super long. Grading criteria became unclear during the last week of class.
Class is alright if you are okay with sitting through lectures for hours on end. Keeps to the point and sets you up for success in the class as long as you can pay attention that long, kind of forgetful but very nice. Deadlines matter
It was an easy class if you do the assignments on time and read the textbook. Since it was online, most of the content for the quizzes was online but I recommend reading the book and the lectures
Good online class to take.
A truly super nice person; I think she's likely better online. Questions are not clear and rely on info we don't have. Moves due dates back constantly and seems to procrastinate heavily on grading. Unresponsive over email, and cancelled classes spontaneously. Evades questions or answers vaguely. Her online lecture recordings are great, though!
I took this class because when I was little, I was OBSESSED with women artists, and it definitely transferred to this course. So much rich history and incredible knowledge. You can truly see how women spoke out and up through creativity.
