Great lectures. Nice lady.
Awesome prof, friendly, clear speaking and entertaining..my fav by far.
Nicest, sweetest prof! Very engaging and clear speaker. Among the best at UVic!
I LOVED this class and the way she taught it! Clear, precise, and engaging, she had an absolute mastery of her subject. If you pay attention, take good notes, and do the readings, you will be genuinely stimulated (& get a good grade)!
Finished the class long ago, still in constant contact. Awesome prof, friendly, helpful and super encouraging...even if the work your worried about isn't to do with her course :)
lectures are informative but don't help at all with tests or papers, so you're basically on your own. very vague. textbooks were a waste of money.
kicks total ass. wants you to do well, and will help however she can. if you don't like her classes, you're not paying attention.
SHE ROCKS! it's a humanities class. the texts meant to supplement lectures, not replace them. tests geared to find out what you actually know, not what you can memorise and regurgitate.
She has good lecture presentation with lots of visual examples of the topic she is discussing
I loved her so much; the nicest person I've encountered at UVic. Her tests were not based on memorization, but on interpretation of the works. All around great prof. would totally take another course with her.
She actually has a sense of humour, but no one laughs when she makes jokes, and I don't want to laugh and be the only one.
Dennine is one of the worst profs I have encountered at UVic. How is she even qualified to teach a course about Egypt when she has only seen the country from a tour bus?? Her lectures are vague and unclear, and her tests are even worse. She turned a very interesting subject into something boring and confusing. I regret taking this class.
Denine is very thoughtful, integrates lectures with wonderful visuals. She tests the students based on understanding of the material not simply memorization. The paper assignments are similarly based upon one's understanding. And, she always makes herself available outside of class.
Blase lecture style, but don't be fooled. She packs a lot of info into them, with great slides. I liked her laid back style. If you go to class and take good notes, you don't need the course readings at all. Very approachable.
Great class - interesting lectures; she's passionate about the subject matter. Had three slide tests and two essays. Encouraged creativity in the essays - I would definitely recommend Denine! She's really nice and approachable - casual atmosphere in class. Also, she's a pretty easy marker (if you go to class and take good notes).
have had two classes with her, would take ANY course she is teaching. Helpful, genuinely nice, actually cares about students, and teaches you more than you realize. You will come out of her courses with a great understanding of the subject matter. Definately recommended!
RAWKS!
Great teacher, somehow I can still talk about burial mounds and Ziggurats 3 years later.
Denine presented the material in an organized manner, and answered questions in class despite its large size. I registered for History in Art 120 expecting nothing more than 3.0 credits, and instead came out with a newfound passion for the arts. However, be prepared to read your text, as the test material was often loosely related to inclass notes.
Good teacher, possible to do the assignments without going to class, as everything is explained in tutorials. No tests just like 15 papers!!
Subbed for the class for a semester, but didn't compare to the first prof. Her lectures were not very clear about the material we should learn, and was too biased in some cases so I was uninspired to learn from her. Easy as hell though, but my ta was the person that taught me the most. If you want an easy grade though, this is the class for you.
I found her lectures dry even though I love the subject. Huge dependence on the textbook which is also pretty dry. I suggest going over the word limit on her papers...
she is a very good prof, helpful and entertaining :)
I am surprised that she got such good ratings. I am not keen on her as a professor. She just wants you to spew a bunch of information on the page (for the 20 or so papers we wrote). She also bailed on a bunch of the classes, telling us to do the work at home. I had friends tell me not to take her class, but I did anyway and regret it.
This is a great intro class. The way she teaches is good to spark interest in the subject without a lot of pressure
I've take a number of classes with Dr. Dudley and she's fabulous. She rewards effort and is a decent marker. She really makes you look at art and artifacts in new ways. She was born to teach and if she was teaching how paint dries, I'd take that course!
Dr Dudley was a reasonably good prof. Her lectures are interesting, but I learned most in my tutorial. There are no tests in this class and we often never use iClickers in class. I don't think we have ever used the textbook!!
Dr Dudley is a good prof. Her lectures are engaging but she marks hard and seems to have forsaken a structured assignment for a free for all one where she marks very specifically. take good notes and never miss a single class!
I LOVE HER! Everything about her teaching, her passion, her experience is wonderful! Im a fourth year Art History student and always look for the classes with her because I would take any of her classes. Its great to have some classes off to do assignements at home, especially with so much on the go all at once. She really cares about her students
Very informative, had well structured lectures and knew what she was talking about! No exam in her course, just a ton of personal written responses to various art pieces/concepts. Super easy and really interesting, I would definitely recommend her!
Dudley clearly loves the material that she teaches, but her classes are fairly useless. She is an incredibly slow marker, and her classes are a lot of work. She is also a very hard marker, if you actually get your projects returned. Her lectures can be very interesting, but overall, I found I learned very little from any of her 3 classes I took.
I was very disappointed with her lectures. She obviously enjoys what she is teaching, which is great. However, she's extremely vague about EVERYTHING. This includes responses to very specific questions and all information given to students. She never hands things back on time and I honestly felt as though I didn't learn a thing.
I found myself feeling sorry for Dr. Dudley, as she is clearly passionate about her field, but could not encourage the same passion among her students. It is a fair bit of work, (1000 words a week) and the marking is unclear, and it seems that sometimes the journal entries you write are unrelated to the class material.
I did not enjoy this class at all. Denine was very unclear and rambled her way through her lectures, and often seemed as though she did not want to be there. It's easy to fake your way through assignments and get a good grade, but the class itself is incredibly frustrating and I would never recommend it to anyone.
Very interesting lectures that intrigue the mind
Dr. Dudley is very unclear in her assignment grading and comments. Her lectures are monotone and tend to drift towards her work rather than the class material. HA120 is obviously not a priority for her, because she is still yet to return the 4th assignment of the semester, when assignment 7 has been issued. Overall I would not recommend her.
I found myself lost in a her class. She did not prepare interesting lectures and we did not have many images for the artworks discussed. lots of empty time where tht was meant for discussion. uninspiring
She is not speaking loudly, so most of the time I felt very confused of the materials. Also, she is like talking to herself. There is no Powerpoint notes except for a few pictures...
She, as a teacher, is just lovely and excellent. She is basically really kind, generous and easy to approach. However, I don't think her lectures are interesting. maybe because I do not major this field of study? I am not sure but it's definitely true that her lectures are not FUN. but it doesn't mean that she is a bad teacher.
I walk into her lectures everyday assuming how it will go. I am always disappointed or impressed, although usually the former. It's not that she's bad, more like she doesn't appreciate the content and it shows in her lecture.
She's such a great person: kind and generous. But the way she leads her lectures is not very clear and DISTRACTING. and She speaks too quietly, which is not good. You will feel nothing but bored and uninspired unless you have particular interests or passion in art history.
Rambling Lectures, Boring. Uses i-clickers in a poor manner. Assignments are too vague and there are 8 per semester, 1000words each. Very slow at marking assignments eg: Assignment 16 was due but she had not returned Assignment 10. Grading is all over the place. But worst of All she is Boring to listen too, and the lectures lack structure.
She's actually a fantastic teacher, when not being forced to do boring 100 level classes, and is in her best and more interesting subjects (like Egypt or London Regency). She's very humerous, polite, and lover for awesome geek things. She also doesn't overkill with essays, midterms, finals or any other assignments which is REALLY refreshing!
Dennine was a great person. Her lectures seemed unstructured, without real guidance. After the first 4 weeks i never knew what the lectures were about. At the end of the lecture she would briefly recap, You would get the AHA! moment, thats what we were talking about. The tutorials were mandatory to understand the lectures.
Took this course as an elective-- Egypt sounded interesting. Easy marker, as I ended up with an A at the end, but she never handed any of our assignments back! Insane. My biggest issue was the lack of any feedback, but she also seemed to have relatively little expertise in the subject-matter as well. Easy A, if you can handle it.
Avoid if possible. Doesn't hand assignments back. Feedback is unclear and rare. Reads aloud to class instead of assigning the reading. Lectures are centred around her research not the course topics. This was the worst class I have ever taken. She is really intelligent just not cut out for teaching.
She fails to engage with the class and instead reads straight off her PowerPoint notes. I love her passion for art and geek culture but feel that the lectures were weak and uninspiring.
awful
A lot of assignments. The course wrap even required for at least 5 pages. Lecture is dry and boring. If has other options won't take her class.
Not the best teacher. I had no idea what the goal of each lecture was as she just rambled on and on. She gives so many assignments that don't seem to be that important to the class. She takes FOREVER to hand back assignments (if you ever get them back). Very bad at giving feedback. I will try not to take her again.
Hard to pay attention in her lectures with little to no slide integration with her spoken lesson Gave little to no feedback on papers and was not a big help if I had a question.
What a joke this course is. At $500 a course, this was a complete waste of time and money. She rambles on and on, leaving everyone else in the dark about what the hell she is talking about. Clicker attendance - 20% of grade, Ridiculous. TAs mark the papers and the feedback/marks are all over the place. AVOID THIS COURSE IF YOU CAN.
I have never enjoyed Dennine's classes. This class was about making effective presentations and yet her slideshows were tacky, disorganized and even pixelated. The entire time I felt that she didn't like me even though I am a hard worker and an A+ student. I think a class like this should be taught by someone who actually has an eye for design.
Dudley reads straight from her notes. It is hard to pay attention in class whe lectures aren't inspiring at all. She is not helpful when asked questions. And worst: her assignment sheets are just a big mess. Fifteen questions, a little information, to questions within that information.... so hard to get an overview and understand what to do.
stimulating course with excellent subject matter . willing to look at other perspectives.
I have had this professor for more than one class and I have to say I love her teaching style. She is interesting, upbeat, challenges students to learn in a fun and engaging way. I think she is wonderful.
Very boring lectures that have nothing to do with the assignments. 8 short assignments worth 10-15% each. Very slow to return papers. She loves twitter, LOTR and Marvel, talks about them in every lecture. She does not seem to know a lot about pop culture, ie her only pop culture references are twitter references. Do not take this class with her.
Reads from notes with poor ppt presentation, clicker used for attendance. TA's mark papers and very late getting them back. Uses a web site for class info and email for assignments. Waste of money and time.
Lectures have nothing to do with the assignments. Only reason to show up is for the iclicker attendance. Tutorials have great TAs but they have to essentially reteach her boring lectures. Quite rude as a person. Don't understand the point of this course when she teaches it. We're not learning, just sitting here. At least no textbook!
Dudley is a boring lecturer. As someone who had never taken a course of this subject-matter before I was underwhelmed. But as I did more research on my own I discovered it's actually a really interesting field! Just makes me more disappointed that she couldn't show me that. Very easy class though. Easy marking and will round your grade wayyy up!
Dennine has no concept of how to structure a course or how to present information in a way that makes sense. Reads straight from her notes, not engaging in the slightest. She's a nice enough person but this class was awful.
Never gives back assignments so you have absolutely no idea how you're doing until you get your FINAL GRADE! There were 5 papers which she makes seem pretty casual and then they are graded harshly. I get A/A+ in my other classes and I got a B in this class. Could've done better if she gave back papers to get a sense of how she marked. Unfair.
Dr. Dudley really knows her stuff and is very good about time management in terms of lecture planing. Shes a fair grader but the emphasis is definitely on interpreting and not just history. If you are comfortable in Art history shes good but at the end of the term 80% of our marks were unknown which is challenging if you need to keep your GPA up.
This women is mentally insane. There is some there very wrong with her and she makes absolutely no sense. Her grading and feedback was the most bizarre thing in the whole world I have never experienced a teacher so awful.
Dudley is a nice woman but she's not cut out for teaching. There is no reason why we shouldn't be using the BrightSpace, yet she forces all students to abide by her nonsensical email submission requirements and her strange iClicker attendance. Her methods are inaccessible to a lot of students and her grading doesn't make any sense.
Denine is out there. But for art history, it's pretty fun. She is open and honest, and so passionate. I felt the grading, assignments, and all components were straightforward even if unconventional. I truly enjoyed lectures with her, and the class was a fantastic GPA boost for me while being enjoyable. If you like writing interesting papers, great.
Very unclear expectations for the writing assignments. Grading was far too harsh for a first year course and the feedback was unhelpful-however this was likely mostly a problem with the TA. The return times for the assignments were quite late.
Awful feedback, gave me an 83 on a paper with the only feedback being "NICE". it was like this for every assignment, does not give constructive comments
this woman NEEDS to take feedback from students and seriously reconsider her teaching module. Insanely confusing method of online teaching and considering AHVS is online and she is the primary AHVS prof, she should acclimate herself to brightspace instead of forcing her students to navigate her bizarre alternative website and assignment schedules.
very confusing online course, why not just use bright space. only gives rude and unhelpful feedback on papers plus doesn't give you a grade so you don't know if you passed or not until grades come out end of term. so many papers that I would be fine doing, however I get mean feedback every time. also tutorials are there for no reason.
Listen carefully: do not take this course. (AHVS121) Dennine is a nice person, but she tends to wander in her lectures. She is also a VERY harsh grader for no reason. A perfect assignment will get you an 82.5. She will tell you to "expand," and won't offer any other advice. Your grades matter, so avoid this course.
Dennine is knowledgeable and passionate, but unfortunately those are the only good things I have to say about her teaching.
Lectures are confusing and all over the place and barely related to assignments. Her set up to teach the class not on brightspace wouldn't be so bad if her slides weren't visually confusing and cluttered. Marking is harsh without any strong feedback to help you improve throughout the course. My marks varied 10-15% with little explanation given.
Feedback was constantly telling me to "expand" on things, but also docked me points for going over the word count. Assignment descriptions are like 3 pages long for a 3 page assignment. I had an A- average for AHVS for the past two years and I got a C-. Prof is super confusing, off-topic, and refuses to use brightspace.
The lectures were confusing and boring. Tutorials were useless to the point of laughability. Prof is nice enough but does not know how to teach, taking forever to get her point across. Had no clue what my grade was until I looked at my actual transcript when finals were released.
This course was supposed to have a lecture every Monday and Thursday. Prof Dudley just cancelled the Thursday lectures for the entire term because she 'didn't feel like doing 2 lectures a week'. Grading was totally inconsistent and confusing, and the assignments were basically 3 pages + of confusing gobbledygook that left much to be desired...
I often found that the material we covered in class and the subjects of the homework did not line up, so I'd be expected to know about one topic for an assignment when it had never been discussed in class. along with this her not using bright space means grades stay a mystery until the end of the term and you dont get notifications for deadlines
Dennine refused to use Brightspace, forced to submit papers/receive feedback through email... No idea what my grade was the whole time. Disorganized lectures focused on American politics and constantly referred to Twitter for examples, which is OK in moderation, not every class. This was not what I expected and I don't recommend it.
I don't have one nice thing to say about Dennine. The Art History department at UVic is absolutely wonderful and it's a shame that Dennine spoils it with her bad attitude, insane grading, and refusal to use BrightSpace. She is a scourge on AHVS and her class is an embarrassment to academia.
I was not impressed with this professor's style and method of teaching. Does not grade based on quality and depth of work. Does not deserve to be teaching in the art history department.
Says she's flexible but offers no real room for accommodation. Feedback is minimal to nonexistent most assignments were returned with either none or hardly any comments. Her only advice was to “expand,” but even when I did (at the max word limits) my marks never improved and got basically the same grade for every assignment. Avoid if possible
The course in and of itself is fine! The lectures are fine, and the tutorials are pretty normal for what you expect from a course like this. The mark for an A+ student is expected to be a low B+ or close to C+ in this course. The marking is just not on par with the work produced. Mandatory course, should be taught by Yang Liu or Amber Morrison.
Dennine is really passionate about art history and textile arts. She's a tough grader, and it's sometimes a little hard to measure how to improve according to her standards, but her lectures are really cool! I've learned so many things that honestly ought to be common sense. Did yall know that all clothing is sewn by a person? even cheap tshirts??
It's kind of all over the place in terms of lecture slides, instructions and feedback, but try your best and you should pass lol
