Mr. Arjo was one of my favorite teachers this semester. He is very well spoken and has interesting philisophical views/ideas. His class was incredibly stimulating, and I have immense respect for him. He has sparked, within me, an interest for the philosophy and nature of ethics.
horrilbe on line teacher, i actually studied for the test and the writen paper and he still gave me a D in the class.
I've had three courses with him, and he is a very good teacher, he makes the subjects easy to understand. His class is easy if you pay attention, but I would imagine it is hard if you don't.
He just talks and talks. and his not are all messed up. I did not like nor did I grasp his teaching style. It was really weird. He is a good guy though, but he odd as a teacher.
WEIRDO!!!!!!!!
They should have another instructor besides him teaching this course.
Good Class!
good guy
If you can get over his voice, you will love his class. Not enough students appreciate how simple and succinct he makes the material. You will learn a lot and do well if you take good notes and review everything for the tests. There are no surprises, and he gives his all to the students, even though they don't seem too interested in philosophy.
he sucks, i wouldn't take another class from him. take any philosphy classes from Leslie Ann Quillen. she is an easy teacher and she cares about her students
He lectures every class, but he is very clear and the class is fairly interesting. You will have reading and about one written assignment per week plus a few papers. His tests are all essay, but if you go to class then you will be fine. He is a really understanding teacher when it comes to absences, and I would reccomend him as a professor.
He's pretty cool and very smart. I got an A in his class and didn't even try that hard. Very straight forward. Read the material though, and do the daily assignments. He can be kind of condescending if you say something stupid, or try to out think him on a topic, but it is actually pretty funny. Just don't say anything stupid in class,DUH. Easy A!
If you have half a brain and a sense of humor, you'll love this class. I'd take any class with Arjo if I could. The weekly assignment are NOT hard if you just do the reading. I didn't put out too much effort and easily got an A. Arjo is a great guy and really helps you get a new take on ideas. Definitely one of the best college classes I've had!
As an older student, I found him to be quite interesting, and I liked the subjects he talked about quite well. I love to write so the papers were easy. Just learn the philosophers and what they believed in and you'll do great. Eye contact & notes a plus! Try to make sense out of your thinking and be clear about your writing - you'll do great!
Overall great instructor. He does lecture a lot, but take good notes and everything will be fine.
The class is interesting. Reading the materials is a must. Dr. Arjo's a decent teacher, but his lectures really got to me. He has a difficult voice to listen to.
If you are looking for an easy A, then take his class. He is not very challenging or interesting, and he's generally boring (although he is a nice guy). Just a basic philo class.
Textbook reading is a must, Make sure you take good notes and pay attention in class, the exams will be easy if you do.
Good, nice teacher
I had him for Ethics 143, Dr. Arjo is the best teacher I have ever had in my life! I promise that you wont regret taking this class. An interesting person as well. I worked hard and got an "A." two papers, four tests, and assignments. Very understanding. Y
Simply the best. I love you Arjo!
Had him for Ancient and Ethics and I'd take any class he offered. He is so smart and clear it makes learning less of a chore. One of the most competent teachers at jccc with an impeccable class structure. I love the way he writes :) I give him my highest recommendations along with Conrad and Stockton
Fantastic professor! He doesn't go around spreading his own opinion. Very fair and a nice person.
Very reasonable professor. There is a weekly 5-pt response about whatever we're learning at the time, 2 short papers, and 4 essay-based tests. I never found the tests to be difficult, so long as you show up to class and keep up with the material. Arjo is very fair and presents each topic's position equally without judgement or personal opinion.
He was a very insightful and interesting professor.
Great!
Mr. Arjo is an excellent teacher who is very intelligent and insightful. He's willing to listen to your questions and critiques to the theories he presents in class with a neutral perspective. I would recommend this class and this teacher to anyone.
Enjoyed a philosophy teacher that didn't preach his beliefs. Presented things in a non-bias way. Always made sure to have you look at all sides. Weekly assignments from readings, 5 exams but get to drop lowest one and 2 papers 3-5 double-spaced pages...not too bad. Would take another class from him.
Arjo is a good professor but his voice was very distracting to me. I couldn't concentrate. He would sound normal for a bit and then he would sound like Kermit the Frog. Not kidding.....I think you can learn a lot from him if you can get over the sound of his voice.
Arjo is a great teacher. He summed up Taoism in single day, and i had a better understanding of it than after an entire semester of Eastern Civ. Be prepared to do the work. Keep up with the weekly assignments. Tests are essay and 2 easy papers. He isn't strict with attendance but you'll be missing out on interesting discussions!
Online class during summer. Good class, not an overload of work. Mr. Arjo is kind and gets grading done pretty quick. He grades assignments fairly, so put an honest effort in and you should get an A.
Professor Arjo is a fantastic teacher!I didn't think his class was hard, but you have to do the weekly assignments and show up to class or else you'll fall behind. He has 4 essay style tests-which he gives study guides for-and 2 papers during the semester.I enjoyed going to his class. All of his lectures are very interesting and you will learn a lot!
Dr Arjo is awesome! Yes he has a weird voice but honestly by the second week, I barely noticed it anymore. He has a great sense of humor and doesnt burden you with a huge workload. I would take him before others for any philosophy class.
Good teacher! I took it as a 3 hour night class, but his humor made it easier to handle!
Excellent instructor and class. Dr. Arjo is very helpful and encourages discussion.
Professor Argo is interesting and does not stuff his opinions down your throat, which I appreciated. The tests are all essay, so you have to make sure you are in class and complete all assignments.
If you show up and pay attention you'll be good. arjo knows what he's talking about. he co-wrote the book. the class is discussion based. 4-5 tests.
If you attend class regularly you will get a good grade. The tests were mainly from class discussions. Weird voice but you get used to it real quick. Lecturing is his teaching style so it was a fight to stay awake at times.
Take his class! The class was great! There were 2 papers and 4 tests. The class was enjoyable and easy to follow his lectures. He made the class interesting and funny. He is a great teacher!
excellent!
His lectures seem like they take forever. There are 5 tests through the semester about 7-10 essay questions on each, a weekly assignment every week, and 2 3-5 pg papers.
His lectures seem like they take forever. There are 5 tests through the semester about 7-10 essay questions on each, a weekly assignment every week, and 2 3-5 pg papers.
His lectures are boring. He never ties everything together. You will NEVER feel prepared for a test, even if you stidy non stop, and then you will still get a grade you didnt want. His voice goes really loud or really soft. Its VERY hard to hear him sometimes. He doesnt give a good outline for note taking nor does he give out a good study guide. Hi
so far, so good! He looks like a young Tim Robbins!!
what and awesome class with an awesome teacher.... Unless you are completely misguided in life, you will find some meaning in his class (sit in the front as he can be suttle with his tone of voice sometimes)
I really enjoyed his Ethics class. His voice is weird, goes between really loud and really soft, so sit in the front to hear the best. He is a fair grader and you will be fine if you can manage short-essay exams. He will even pre-grade a paper for you if you get it done early enough, so you can fix it for a better grade- great guy. Decent lectures
Great pofessor! He is an ethics teacher that teaches objectively which is what you want. He doesn't try to tell you what he thinks is the right point-of-view, only what the different points-of-view are. All of the tests are in essay form and there are 3 papers and easy weekly assignments. Annoying voice but you get used to it after about a week.
PAY ATTENTION!!
Awesome:-)class. Great instructor! Must take class.
Dr. Arjo was an awesome professor. Very straight foward. Notes in class are exactly what test questions will be. Stay on top of the class and its hard to not get an A. I loved this class.
I personally love how Arjo teaches. I believe he is straight forward with all the assignments and tests. You MUST attend class if you want to pass the SHORT essay tests. Everything is given in class lecture. SHOW Up and Pay attention, it should be an easy A. O and dont forget the HW assignments!! An 2 papers. Would take him again.
Best teacher at JCCC! Most of the teachers at this school suck but Arjo is great! Very clear an not confusing. He is really funny too!
A very clear, engaging professor. He's good at pushing you to critically analyze what you're learning, and he definitely promotes student discussion. You have to get used to his voice, and the tests are all essay, but if you want to really think about ancient philosophers, he's a great teacher.
I sat in the front row on the first day of class and then never again. This man's voice sounds like the bird on Aladdin. Pay attention in class and be able to explain what he tells you and you will pass easily. He puts complicated text into an easy to understand format. Overall good teacher. I never once used the book, just attended class.
Hard class if you struggle with understanding old texts. Weekly homework and the tests were hard for me. If you are good at this def join, will be easy for you!
The class seems harder than it is. If you do your weekly assigned homework on time, 2 papers and study for the tests you will pass this class. You MUST READ THE TEXT BOOKS. Attendance is not mandatory but it really helps understand the material. Don't over analyze the material but make sure you understand the concept to do well.
As long as you do the assignments and participate in the discussions it is a pretty easy class. I did it in the summer and it was pretty well paced. But dont plan on working ahead, he makes assignments acessable once a week.
Very cool instructor will get into topics that seem very difficult and break them down so you can absorb the lesson.
WONDERFUL professor. Very kind, consistently went above and beyond--so incredibly helpful. Took the time to explain the difficult material in a way that made it so much clearer. Highly, highly recommended.
The tough part about this class is that you can't just memorize the material. He doesn't care about when people lived or died or anything mundane like that he wants you to actually learn the material. He does an amazing job of translating tough text into real life current topics. If you attend class, listen and you won't need the book.
Good class.
Good teacher. Get ready to work hard and think critically.
Nice guy and teaches fairly well. This isn't a very exciting class, but he makes it fun. Test are all essay which can be good or bad depending on how you view them. Drops your lowest test score, including the final if you are happy with your 4 previous test scores. Assigns 2 papers, but they are not that hard. Overall good professor to take from.
Hard class. I've had him twice. I've never read, texted the whole class and got a C. Not bad if you put a good amount of effort in. He's a good guy, down to the heart.
this class to me is an easy A or B. All you have to do is read and everything else will fall into place. He gives you feedback whether your right or wrong. This class was actually interesting as i like ethics so just be prepared to read and enjoy
Nice guy, but the class materials aren't for everyone. Read like 15 pages every week or 2. Homework is essay/responses about prompts that are typically gone over in class. Tests are multiple short prompts.
I really liked Arjo. You do have to read a bit and do weekly assignments but they are pretty easy. There are 2 papers but you can email them to him before they are due and he will email you back with feedback, which is extremely helpful and shows he really cares. The tests are pretty easy if you pay attention in class and go over the study guides.
I felt that he was not very excited about teaching, but it might have just been the way he talks. He gives long lectures and not very many assignments. He's a fair grader and can easily catch a plagiarized piece. You don't necessarily need to go to class, but you do need to keep up with the readings. Lots of analysis goes into his class. Recommend!
i teach myself more than i learn in class. nice but doesn't seem into teaching. wouldn't take another class from him.
Professor Arjo is a very professional and knowledgeable guy. He knows a lot of things even outside of the philosophy and ethics topics. He class is consist of all lectures and tests and homework are based on his lecture and book reading. There are 2 papers but they aren't hard if you pay attention to him and study guide. Creative minds should excel
His voice can be a bit difficult at first but otherwise his lectures are perfect: interesting and easy to understand. He discusses all of the material you read and makes it simple. Slideshow days: super boring but rare-he prefers to speak. Have the book for some minor details with homework. Short and EASY weekly reading homework. Any questions: ask
The content is tough but he explains it in a way that makes it easy. Honestly I felt like the class was a breeze but I also learned a ton. He grades on how well you comprehend and articulate the readings, so if you like philosophy and understand it well, you will do very well in class. Don't skip the readings or class.
Took online this summer. If you have basic reading comprehension you should be OK. There were 3 readings/1 weekly assignment each week. I hate to read but the material kept my attention & 1 of the readings was hilarious. Professor Arjo answers emails quickly & is very helpful but as he denotes he can't read minds so if you need help you have to ASK
Has weekly assignments that help you to better understand the upcoming lectures for that week. He is funny and loves when students participate and are not afraid to speak their minds. He likes to see that the class is actively participating in the discussions.
Really interesting class. Only class this semester that I actually wanted to go to. Show up, listen and take notes, and you're solid. If you take halfway decent notes and study then, the tests are easy.
Philosophy doesn't come easy for me, but I managed to make it. The final was significantly easier than any of the other tests, for some reason. He gives excellent examples for concepts... this class just wasn't my forte. Don't let it keep you from taking it, though!
so boring. if u need class take with someone else
The only scores for the class are tests and two papers. The tests are short answer, but there aren't very many questions. It's philosophy and I'm not a fan of it so the lectures seemed kind of dry to me but I did learn a bit and gained new perspectives. The class will make you change the way you see certain things.
This is my first semester at college and let me tell you I am so glad to have had Arjo in my life. This is the most amazing class. You do have to have a knack for philosophy but even if you don't his lectures are easy to understand. If you have questions, ask. He will answer every question and make sure that you understand.
Well, this class was hard for me but that's because of the reading (which I struggle with). Otherwise, he is very nice! I think I might have been too vague with answers for assignments, but he never graded me poorly!! Our paper was supposed to be 4-6 pages, I barely got 2, but because I got my point across, I got a good grade!!
Professor Arjo was a great professor. I had him for ethics and found it interesting. There are 4 test plus a final and he drops one test. Kind of hard readings but if you do your best on the weekly assignments and should get all of the points. Two papers but if you send it in early he will give you feed back to help improve. Very lecture heavy.
So there's only a few assignments besides the test including 2 papers and 5 point assignment per week so the tests are really important. If you take notes in class and remember examples then it's super easy. He gives you a chance to submit the paper twice, so that's super nice. You can definitely tell what his opinions are during lecture.
Arjo really knew what he was talking about which made lectures good. You need to take good notes and review them for the test because he doesn't give study guides just a summary of the lessons. There's a reading assignment every week, so lots a reading but he always grades fairly. Also, he drops your lowest test grade!
Took this as a summer online course. I asked questions about the course frequently and put loads of effort into the class. You are required to spend 100$ on a textbook written specificity by him. I ended semester with an 88.8% and he wouldnt consider extra credit or take into consideration that I emailed weekly asking questions.
His lectures are extremely interesting, but that is not the only reason to them... Although he gives weekly assignments don't waist your time taking notes on book. His test are purely on his lectures. He'll drop your lowest test. so I've you're absent a lot find a friend in the class you can copy their notes from. i'd take it again though
Professor Arjo was an excellent professor. His lectures were always rich with historical details and references to contemporary issues a bit surprising since I took his ancient philosophy course, though quite welcome as I quickly learned to see those old texts as anything but outdated or irrelevant. Overall, it was a great experience for me.
The textbook is necessary, but don't get confused. It is only correlated with homework assignments that are due every week. The tests are purely over his lectures. He is educated in his field and will make this class interesting, but you will work for your grade. Although he teaches philosophy there is no room for thinking outside of his lessons.
An amazing teacher. I am picky about my teachers, and Arjo exceeded all my expectations. His lectures are very organized and easy to follow. Arjo will make sure eveyone understands the material during lectures. There are weekly writing prompts that are fairly easy to complete. There is quite a bit of reading. Study the notes he posts for tests.
This was a great class and an even better teacher. He doesn't grade too hard at all, and if you're incorrect about something, he'll explain it to you so that you can understand it well. For the final, he offers to read rough drafts, and if you submit early, even grades it and gives you a chance to fix any notes he's attached to increase your grade.
Prof Arjo is a really amazing professor, he goes out of his way to make sure everyone understands, will work with you on due dates, and is overall a really nice guy. The class itself is very straightforward and if you come to class and even halfway pay attention, you will get an A. DO NOT BUY HIS REQUIRED BOOK just find the readings online for free
Dr. Arjo always provides great explanations when students are not grasping the material. I had a quiet class that did not like to talk much but he always asked thought provoking questions to encourage participation. If you are the type that likes having class discussions about philosophical topics this is the class for you!
best professor at jccc. I took him twice and he makes his lessons and assignments super clear and straight forward. he makes it very easy to understand and his assignments and papers are exciting! final was a 10 page paper but he offers advice, feedback and time to get a good grade. this was for his honors section!
Outstanding professor, I have no complaints. Although he makes you think a bit (which he'll tell you is his goal), it helps you understand his lessons better. Would definitely take his class again if I need any of his other courses later on.
It was not test heavy or assignment heavy at all probably 2 assignments per week which are nice but I would say he is a hard and unfair grader. I did all of the assignments as asked and still got a 3/5 on assignments or less. A lot of the assignments are easy and quick but the papers are 5 pages long but 30 points which seems unfair.
Professor Arjo was a great professor and an intelligent man. He was an editor for the textbook we used in class, has a philosophy club, and is genuinely a real philosopher in my eyes. The class was engaging for me, but also difficult. The content was a challenge to master, but he always walked through it with us in an understandable fashion.
Taken online, so I never got to meet him in person, but I liked the way the class was laid out and the work is balanced well.
he is a lecture-focused teacher who wrote the dang textbook for our Honors Ethics course. he knows what he is talking about and also promotes inner questioning and discussions in class that can go many different ways based on the body of the class. i love philosophy and loved his class. keep up with the assignments and study for tests
Don't take this professor if you didn't sleep the night before because you will sleep like a baby in class. He isn't a bad professor but he is boring. Really boring and you can't hear what he has to say half the time.
Good professor with clear instructions most of the time. Readings can be hard to understand but participating in lectures is all that matter and writing down notes. If you are not big on philosophy you will probably do ok just like I did.
Very knowledgable Prof. who encourages philosophical thinking.
I loved Arjo's lectures. He encouraged questions and was always good about clarifying when it was needed.
Great professor who really knows the material. Engaging lectures and fair grading, though lots of readings. Unstuck study was super helpful for preparing for tests.
Kept politics out, it wasn't woke. Loves when you participate in class. Exams are over his lectures. Five exams total and lowest grade gets dropped, even the final. Easy weekly assignments that sometimes requires use of his $100 textbook he makes you buy. Two papers and he gives great feedback on rough drafts if you send them to him. Super nice guy
He seems to know a lot and is very knowledgeable. However, his lectures are boring, as he just reads off a slideshow the entire time, and doesn't allow students to engage much with the material. Besides that, I think he is a fair grader, but the limited amount of assignments make getting a high grade difficult. Overall, not a time consuming class.
