Yikes. Uses plenty of examples but doesn't explain a single one. Take him only if there are absolutely NO other options.
He is, without a doubt, the worst professor that I've had the misfortune of studying under. This guy makes absolutely no effort to help his students and throws together tests that are both irrelevant and lacking (proofreading was not evident). He needs to be reprimanded.
Allright these other ratings only said that because they failed!! I got an A in this class. All you have to do is study. You study and you pass. He presented the material as well as it could be presented. It's simple, STUDY AND YOU PASS!! He does everything he can to give out A's!! Great prof!!
Well, I think he was a bad teacher too. I ended up going to a different lecture(Dr.Platz), even though I was in Bong's class. Bong did NOT present the information as clearly as possible, he was very confusing and I don't recommend taking him. I ended up with an A-(thanks to Platz) in this class.
Those were the hardest exams I have EVER taken. He is a very nice guy, very personable. However, there was something missing, but I am not sure what. Once you finish that exam, just thank god for a curve, because you know it will be a big one.
I dropped the class after the first exam, probably could have stayed and gotten an A with a 50% for the class. I wouldn't have been prepared for 252 though, he doesn't explain anything. Taking Platz is a much better option.
Alright...Bong is good guy, he tries his hardest to teach the material...He tries to give everyone he can an A...He makes an effort to help you if you make an effort to learn. The material itself is hard...it's a hard class. If you study you can do well in his class..these poeople whine too much!!!
Bong's a good guy, i agree, and when i took the class i hated it - but i got a B- and knew the material - now i have Fraenkel and i hate it even more. Bong might not be the best at explaining the material but most ochem profs are even worse.
He is a nice guy but a bad professor. His exams were really hard because he didnt teach at all. I got a B+ only because the curve was incredible. Im in Rojanbabu now and he is 100x better. Only take Bong if Frankel is your only other option
Professor Bong's teaching inspires. He makes the subject matter accessible. Reading notes from his class is pure learning pleasure. I highly recommend Dr. Bong for this course. You will learn, and if you listen to what he has to offer in class, taking his exams can even be enjoyable. Dr. Bong is the very best this Chem department has to offer.
Prof. Bong...Hehehe! I think he and the last reviewer were using a Bong. Inspiring? He couldn't inspire a man on fire to jump in a lake. Dude was always 5-10 minutes late to lecture. Basically, I learned how not to behave.
Two things about Dr. Bong: He always comes prepared, and he's never late. Classes with him fly by because everything he says has purpose and content. Great professor. No one better for this subject.
Lectures were about as clear as an outhouse toilet. Kind of stuck up, and cocky...Dude needs a new watch to get to class on time. Avoid at all costs...look to Platz for real explanations!
Ridiculously a horrible teacher. If you are going to take o-chem , avoid this one at all course. One bad ass teacher. Unprepared and always late to class. Basically, he just doesn't care. This guy is ruining OSU chemistry department reputation.
OMG, the worst teacher ever..not just at osu, but everywhere. His lectures are not coherent and don't flow whatsoever and he asks the weirdest questions on his tests. The tests are nothing like the homework, so basically no matter how hard/much you study, you will not ace his exams. DO NOT TAKE!!!
really, no words would really describe him. He is just that
Worst f*in prof ever! I wrote the exact same thing from the notes on the exam for ans and it was marked wrong. Wtf? He probably doesn't know what he is teaching. His officehour are helpless b/c, 1st, he is unpatient to explain "stupid" questions. 2nd, there are just way too many people there cuz no one understand what's goin on. Stay the hell away!
Its official the polls are in THE WORST TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD!!!! It doesn't matter how hard you study it does no good, notes are terrible, exams are extremely difficult. The help given is little to none.
bad..... office hours are brief and he is always late to them, he complains when the class does poorly on his impossible exams. practice exams (when he has them) are not very much like the real exam. comes up with a list of very broad topics to know for the exams that MIGHT point you in the right direction. drop this class if at all possible
I think he was so bad so all the feedback would keep him from getting assigned to teach another class so he can focus his time on research. There is no other explanation, seriously the worst professor i've ever had.
Bad. You had better remember every single mech youve learned because he will totally surprise you on exams, which are impossible to study for. Gives vague study sheets and then puts hardly anything relevant on the exams. Nice guy, bad teacher, unfair tester.
Worst professor I have ever had at OSU and anywhere else. Doesn't care about teaching. Exams are impossible to prepare for, even if you had done all of the homework and practice sheets. Wouldn't even stay during exams, told the TA she couldn't answer questions for the last 30 minutes of the exam. AVOID!
Exams were not as unfair as some claim, but were poor assessments of the material. Very unclear, gave poor explainations, took confusing shortcuts in mechanisms, easily frustrated by questions, and seemed rather unwilling to work with students. Didn't offer review sessions, no answer keys to practice exams, doesn't seem like he wants to teach.
Prof. Bong actually suggested dropping the class after the 1st midterm. 'nuff said.
Take his class, but go to someone else's lectures. The honors kids will sign up for Callam because he's the best, but that would screw up the curve. Most likely he will have the most empty seats so the stupid people will end up taking it. I Heart the curve. Goes to fast in lectures. Helpful in office, but makes me sad inside my heart.
whatever you do, dont take his class. I am a chemistry major so i am used to hard classes and profs that dont care but this guy takes the cake for not caring about his students!!
Cool guy, but tests are impossible. Averages around 55% and suggested for students to drop the class. Compared to other profs (Callam) give little to no practice problems, except a few suggested problems from the book, which are not nearly as difficult as his problems.
Difficult, cares about his students but is not personable, test 1 was tough, test 2 was a breeze, final kinda hurt (too much on stuff we never learned), lectures are pretty clear, his teaching doesn't really inspire like the other rating says but it is possible to ace the course, i did, curve was nice, and you'll learn some ochem too, homework was
Dr. Bong started off easy, but things definitely got harder as the quarter went on. For me, the first midterm was ok. The second one, was terrible. I left feeling very sick. The final was again ok. O-chem just involves alot of work, and I think it sucks no matter what.
Don't take him. He doesn't talk loud enough, writes too fast, have bad handwriting, his tests are impossible, doesn't offer enough practice, even Frankel would be a better choice. I learned nothing, failed every test, but still did average in the class. If you take him, make sure to put the suicide hotline on speed-dial and have a flask ready.
The class was pretty difficult, but I'm assuming any ochem class tends to be. His exams are real tough (class average 55ish, but curved in the end), but if you go to office hours, he helps out a LOT. He had no problems staying late to give us some assistance. His class started off a bit messy, but eventually he organized his lectures into sensible
Tests are hard. Teaches the material well, and tests over both hard concepts and little details. He helps everyone pass the class. Good idea to attend all lectures as he gives details in lecture not found in book that will be on the test.
Horrible Professor! Do not take this professor under any circumstances; not difficult, just a flat-out BAD TEACHER.
He made the quizzes take home and let you go to the TA's office hours to get help on it. Oscar Torres was an excellent TA for the class. His exams were much easier than callam's. final was only 6 pages but class avg was 53%. look over the homework solutions because some of the tricky HW problems end up as similar problems on the exams.
He is really helpful
He's so intensely attractive that I have trouble paying attention in class. Maybe opt for a less attractive teacher if you're attracted to Asian males and easily distracted from ochem lectures.
Is indeed very attractive (picture doesn't do him justice) and has really great skin. :) Not a great teacher, however. Frankly, it seems he cares more about research than teaching (has great credentials). Lectures can be unclear, fairly difficult exams, but very helpful with questions! Just study a lot and ask questions.
Can't always hear him if you sit beyond the 4th row. Exams are't representative of recommended practice problems & exams which makes them more difficult. Attending lectures don't really help or hurt. The only thing you might miss is when he occasionally tells you that something specifically needs to be memorized. I'd recommend taking someone else
Bong is pretty useless. The lectures consisted of him drawing giant structures while we fought to keep up. He sometimes told us things that would specifically be on the exams (though he rarely explained it well). The exams were pretty insane. Despite his incredibly good looks and soft Asian skin, don't take him!
Bong is to chemistry as Larry the Cable Guy is to comedy. He sucks, and always wears the same outfit.
The worst professor I've ever encountered at OSU. Does not take an interest in having students learn; lectures and notes are useless. Exams are difficult and do not have much to do with the recommended practice problems.
He is the worst O-chem teacher I have ever had. After Midterm one he told us he was going to curve the class to a C- and told us to drop if we were below average. Everything about the class sucks, whatever you do DO NOT take this class, wait a quarter from another teacher if you have to.
Bad Teacher! I took this class over to get a better grade and ended up screwing myself. He speaks extremely too low:( Please get a microphone!
terrible! He does not know how to teach!!!
Now, I LOVE chemistry...but this class was just terrible! I went to lecture every day, read the book, did the homework, and still ended up with C's and B's on the quizzes. It's ridiculous how hard he makes everything. The average on the midterm, after people dropped, was a 54%! i will say he explains things okay if you go to office hours.
Professor Bong is probably the worst teacher I've ever had. Ever. And I say this because what he does (read off of pre-made slides) doesn't qualify as TEACHING.. If you HAVE to take his class, it is 100% up to you to teach yourself the material.. It's hard, but possible, I ended up with an A in the class (after a large curve mind you)..
Dr Bong is the single most god-awful teacher on the face of this earth and he destroyed my life for a quarter. He has no teaching skills whatsoever. Don't bother doing homework because it remembles nothing that is on the quizzes and exams. I am currently writing a letter to the chem department about him so he can never step foot in a classroom agai
This is a very challenging class. I spent about 8 hours per week studying. My friends became accustomed to my living in the study room on the weekends. However, if you do the work, you will get a good grade. It is a lot of independent study. He tried very hard at the end of the quarter to be as helpful as possible; he had not been so before.
If you like to teach yourself half of the material, then you may like his lecture. He covers the "highlights" from the book- what he thinks are important- then tests you on everything. Exam averages in mid-low fifties. Would not recommend.
Pros: He uses clear terminology to explain chemical reactions, and sometimes impromptu hand motions . He's created a classroom where students feel free to guess answers without feeling stupid, and seems interested in helping the students learn the material. Cons: more than half of the practice exams don't connect to what he's testing
I've always been a good student, but this class was really discouraging for me. He makes his exams very difficult and even open book quizzes were unfair, covering material that had not been discussed in class. The main adjectives to describe him would be condescending, uninterested and demanding. You might just fail.
Dr. Bong delivers clear, organized lectures, and does a good job of explaining things in office hours. I don't know why people say exams covered material not covered in lecture - it just isn't true. Organic chemistry isn't easy, and you'll need to make sure you can do all of the assigned practice problems if you want to do well.
Plan on teaching yourself everything out of the book. I went to every class and paid attention, my notes did not help for the online quizzes, they were ridiculous. He made people feel stupid in the class, and embarrassed students. horrible professor
This is a VERY tough class, but not impossible. It requires a lot of studying outside of the classroom. If you fall behind, you are doomed! Dr. Bong is very intelligent and his lectures are very clear. However, he has a tendency to be very sarcastic and sometimes just rude to students with questions. Tests, quizzes are fair. DO ALL HOMEWORK!
Bong is clear and easy to understand, but his examples in class are super confusing. I studied a ton and if you want an A you have to expect to go above just doing homework problems, because his tests problems are far more difficult. He's not the worst teacher but he's not a good one either. A LOT of test questions were totally irrelevant to class.
The class is hard and he does not really care about his students. Seems annoyed when you ask him for help. Tests are kind of rediculous. Turned me off from the chemistry field.
Teacher is garbage. He doesn't teach even though it's his job. His tests are not not compatible with the material you learn in class or from the book.
Horrible.
Bong is not a very good teacher. That said, he was not as bad as I thought he was going to be after reading the ratings on here. It was not so much his teaching that suffered, more that his exams were ridiculous. I just took the final and despite not thinking it was too bad, got a 51% on it (I got A's and B's in Gen Chem). Switch if you can.
If you get bong, really read your book, because he'll expect you to have read it every time you come to lecture
If you get bong, really read your book, because he'll expect you to have read it every time you come to lecture
Bong is the WORST teacher I have ever had at OSU. He lectures like he's talking to people who've been doing O. Chem for years, he talks down to students and makes people feel dumb for asking students. You have to teach yourself hard material, which shouldn't have to happen. You need to switch out of his class. He should not be allowed to teach.
I was really nervous for this class after reading the ratings here, but bong isn't as bad as he sounds. He is sorta rude when you ask stupid questions though. Read the book thoroughly and do all the homework, his practice exams are pretty useless but the carmen quizzes help. and memorize every pka he mentions.
Bong was horrible. Didn't teach much of the chapter, but expected you to know it all. Including every table and picture. His favorite thing to say was "This is important, but I'm not going over it" Reading your book and doing the problems are the only way to help yourself. Go to another lecture too if possible. Bong is uninterested in your grade.
Bong is very unpredictable in terms of what he puts on exams. Our averages were low (like 40s), and if you want the A you have to go well above what is considered normal studying time. I got an A-, but that was mostly thanks to my TA. If you don't come to lecture, don't anticipate passing the class.
Professors like Dr. Bong are few and far between at Ohio State. He is extremely knowledgable and always willing to help. Organic chemistry is a difficult subject, and he does his best to make it simple. By far one of the best professors I've ever had. Also,Oscar Torres is an organic chemistry ninja, so try to get him for your recitation.
He isn't a terrible teacher (also not the best one), it's just the subject matter is very in depth and part of being in college when taking upper level classes is self motivation. This is a weed out class for Pre-Med/Vet students and those classes are going to be much more difficult, so appreciate the challenge.
I was really nervous when I read the comments before I took his class. But Dr Bong is a rare professor in organic chem. He knows how to teach chemistry. He does not test u on anything he does not teach in class. Read the text before lecture, pay attention in class, read his notes after lecture, and get ur A.
Don't trust most of these ratings, Bong is a pretty good professor. His lecture material is clear and concise and tests are fair. As long as you do his practice quizzes, go to class, go to recitation, and do the homework you should be fine.
Dr. Bong knows what he's talking about when it comes to Ochem (The fact that he's hot is an added bonus) Ignore all the negative reviews, Dr. Bong rocks!!
Dr. Bong starts off well with slow break downs of the material But about halfway through he started rushing through everything and leaving confused students in the dust. He doesn't take requests well at all. I suggested some example problems and he said no. I don't know what everyone else is talking about but his book problems DID NOT for exams.
I thought organic chemistry was bad enough, but after taking this class, I may never enjoy a chemistry class again. Dr. Bong is the kind of professor that doesn't care about his students. It might be because he doesn't like to teach or even that he hates undergraduates. Either way, if you can avoid taking his class, do so.
the worst teacher ever!! he doesn't care about his students and doesn't want to help them. i asked him a question and he just blew me off. he's a useless teacher and i'm bummed i had him for the foundation class for o chem.
Bong is the worst professor i have ever had. Only cares about his research, so teaching is only a chore for him. Skips through things, but you must know them for exams. Your exams are the ONLY grades in the class!! Leaves confused students behind with no understanding.Does not care about students! Final avg. was 26%. Switch if possible!!!
Dr. Bong actually doesn't do research, for people who tried to argue that. His class is tough, but I went to his office hours a lot and it definitely helped. If you study like you should and read the book, you will do fine. His exams were very predictable (no tricks) and overall the class had high averages on the midterms. He's really not that bad.
Teaches at a basic level and his tests are much harder. However, ONLY chem professor I've ever heard of or seen that his practice midterms are exactly like his midterms. Requires you to know things out of the book that he wont teach in class. Sometimes kind of sassy and funny.
Very clear in lecture. Exams are straight forward and very fair - practice exams are very similar to actual exams. Went the extra mile and set up study groups for our class. Overall great proff.
not clear in lectures-does not explain concepts or terminology you are just expected to know.
Not clear on lectures, you can hardly understand because he mumbles a lot. Useless office hours and test reviews too. Quizzes and tests always have errors. DON't TAKE him run away from him. His class is very hard, he and his team go very hard correcting quizzes and tests. at the end you won't learn anything from him, you have to study in your own.
His class is very straightforward, and if you read the book and do some practice problems you will be fine. Exams were extremely easy compared to some other professors and there weren't any surprises. He seems easy to talk to and genuinely tries to help students out.
Super easy, might be on probation and forced to give easy exams
Although OChem 2 is a difficult course, if you keep up with the readings and you do many practice problems, the weekly quizzes and the midterms will have no surprises. The questions for his midterms are usually hidden within the practice exams he gives. "It's a tough class, but that's just the nature of the beast".
Fair professor but don't expect a response if you send him an email. I sent 4-5 emails throughout the semester, received 0 responses.
If you pay attention, you can figure out what exactly (read: word for word) will be on the test. Overall, while he was a little difficult to hear with the microphone, his class was reasonable. I enjoyed this class, and based on previous reviews, it seems that he has made an effort to improve his teaching style. If asked, he would always help.
Dr. Bong was very clear on what would be tested on. Tests were similar to the problems in the book and his notes were very helpful. His lectures made tough topics understandable. As long as you worked at it and came to class , you will get the good grade you deserved.
Dr. Bong is a fantastic teacher - he knows how to explain difficult concepts in a way for everyone to understand. His practice sets are exactly what to expect for the quizzes, and he does his best to hint at the exams. This is also where his downfall is - his exams are ridiculous. Retrosynthesis comprises a large portion of them!
Expect all of the retrosynthesis, one of the harder concepts in organic chemistry. Tests are hard and taken in lecture, quizzes aren't too bad though. O-chem is just a hard class so you'll be shafted no matter what prof you have tbh
Professor Bong is the most fair O Chem professor I have had so far. His exams are not too difficult and does not try to trick his students on them. He made the material very easy to understand. If you do the textbook problems you will be in great shape for the exams. He is also very helpful in office hours and after class for answering questions.
Dr. Bong is by far the worst professor for organic chemistry OSU has to offer. If I could give any advice to a STEM major here, I would advise avoiding him at all costs. He was rude, disrespectful, and unfair. His notes were disorganized, unclear, and often times more confusing than not. Overall, he is mean, disrespectful and an awful teacher.
Feels like Dr. Bong and the TAs gave up on us. Answered questions at the beginning of the semester but then stopped. Stopped providing quizzes because he just didn't want to make them. I think he cheats you out of content because he doesn't want to go over it. If you care about ochem, don't take it w/ Bong. Probably great in research though.
Bong wasn't a super hard prof, the course itself is just very complicated. He was extremely straightforward with the concepts that he wanted you to focus on (the concepts in the weekly quizzes and take home quizzes). I never walked out of an exam and thought that I had never seen the material before. Everything is straight out of the book
Bong's class is challenging but manageable. Staying on top of the weekly quizzes and using resources like the textbook and Unstuck ai for study prep can really help. Email responsiveness could be better, but overall, a solid professor.
Difficult to succeed in Dr. Bong's class. No resources on Carmen and notes are written on the chalkboard -- if you aren't in class then too bad. While he is helpful one-on-one, lectures are dry and concepts are thrown at you without proper context. Grades on VERY little (2 exams, final, and 10 quizzes). Exams are rushed and worth 84% of your grade.
Difficult to succeed in Dr. Bong's class. No resources on Carmen and writes notes on chalkboard -- so if you aren't there than too bad. While he is helpful one-on-one, lectures are dry and concepts are thrown at you with little context. Grades are based on VERY little (2x exams, final, and 10x quizzes). Not very nice to students and pretty harsh- not sympathetic, and also, he's probably proud of having a low rating because that means he's making enough students mad. Redeemable qualities include humor and being grounded, but his overall tendency to power trip over students who haven't dedicated their lives to this material loses him respect.
Didn't give practice exams but material was predictable because it reflected the lecture content well. Missing lecture is not a big deal because he put videos on Carmen covering ALL lecture material, so I don't really get why people say there are no online resources and that if you miss lectures ur screwed. Lowkey is on bit of a power trip tho
He is very sassy. Best way to describe it he doesn't really care for his students and their performance but does provides decent resources outside of class. He is okay, definitely a hard class tho.
