Good teacher! He explains thing well and gives pretty easy exams.
Does nothing but skim the book with notes on an overhead projector. Boring class, explains nothing.
His class can be boring but he is more than willing to work with people and explain things a number of times and different way untill you understand. Kind of a dork but in an endearing way.
I had this class over the summer. Great teacher! Explains things very well, and tests are short-answer (no multiple choice) but partial credit is given. Tests are very fair. If you can deal with his annoying laugh and pay attention in class, you'll do fine.
Great Professor! Very clear on what he expects you to know for tests. He is very friendly and helpful.

He's an okay teacher. If you take notes and study them, you should do well on your tests and homework. If you don't show up and not study, don't be surprised if you don't do well on your stuff. The class is boring, but come on, how can Chemistry Lecture be fun?
Good professor. Although he is slightly on the boring side, he is very clear throughout the whole semester. Tests are fair/easy as long as you study. Not a very easy A, but it is do-able. Also...very funny laugh.
Great professor, great guy. Class can be a little boring, but it's chemistry. Tests are very fair - no trick questions and a bonus question on every exam. Easy to approach with questions. Good for someone who has had chem before but didn't really get it.

I loved this class. He's really funny, gives fair tests, and will always help with any difficult information.
Lectures a lot, homework can be hard sometimes...
great teacher,..loved his class and did well..very hard to get anything lower than a B
Very clear during class, do the hand out homework and you will be ready for the tests. Stay on top of things and he is very laid back and will help you in any way he can. He stares at certain people that kinda creeps me out but other than that he is a great teacher.
His test questions are the exact same format as his homework questions, just with different values in the problems. If you have a question, ask him. He is great one-on-one. I suggest getting with some friends to work on the homework. I never opened the textbook and didn't study more than an hour for every test and got a very high A.
He's a typical science nerd. He makes dumb chemistry jokes pretty often and it's funny. His lectures are quite boring and he just uses the overhead screen all the time. Not a hard professor though and he explains everything quite thoroughly.
Mr. Burns rocks! Tests are average. Challenging but not too tough. Homework is given so you have other grades. He will know your name by the second day of class! Excellent professor, will help in and outside of the classroom!
Very well organized. Kinda geeky, but the kinda geeky you definitely want for a teacher. He is obviously interested in making the subject matter accessible. He is fair, but sympathetic to student concerns in general.
One of the easiest
He is kinda geeky but in a like-able way. His tests are easy if you do his practice worksheets and homework( tests are the same as worksheets just different values). This is a pretty straightforward class if you do the work you pass if you dont you dont pass. He is a great teacher very friendly and always willing to help.
AMAZING TEACHER!!!
Solid, solid, solid professor. He's not the most stimulating lecturer, but is thoroughly prepared and provides excellent supplemental materials to the student. I recently took the MCAT and found the Gen Chem part of the Physical sciences very straightforward. Thank you Prof. Burnes.
he is the best!! just make sure you try. if you don't try he will not help you. just show him that you are trying and want to do good in his class. dont expect him to give the answers because he wont but he will help you get to the answer. come to class everyday and ask questions afterwards and visit his office hours. highly recommended!!!!
No multiple choice exams, but they're not that bad if you do the practice problems he posts on Blackboard. Very good at explaining things in as few words as possible, which is always helpful in a science class. Not always good about posting lecture outlines before class, but if you put in the work, it shouldn't be that hard to get a good grade.
tests are really easy if you do the practice problems he gives you (not from the book)
Great teacher. Chemistry is hard but he makes it very do-able. Kind of a science geek but he's kinda funny in his own way. I went by his office hours once and he called me by name for the rest of the semester. nice guy...good teacher.
Dr. Burnes is an OUTSTANDING teacher, I am a post-bac student here at UNCG, and it amazaed me how eay he made Gneral Chemistry I. I got a D my freshmen year of college at ECU, and I currently have a soild A in his clas right now! He is the perfect example of teachers "not making stuff harder than what it has to be" He was definitely a big help anyt
Great professor would take any chem. class he teaches.
As a Chem 111 student in his class I find his lectures hard to follow and his attitude cold. He gets mad when students help one another in class when someone doesn't understand something and often refuses to answer questions, simply stating 'You should already know that'. He rushes through his lectures and doesn't explain his process.
Difficult to follow. He rushes through lecture and barely gives you time to copy notes. He assumes you know everything prior to lecture and often won't answer questions in class. Not sure why but he seems really angry all the time.
I thought he was very hard to follow and his monotone voice I couldn't learn from. He would rarely call on people that had questions even if their hand was raised. I ended up dropping this class just to take it with someone else.
He was awful, please don't take him. Take Dr.Nile instead!
This guy is the most solid professor I've had. He gives lecture outlines. Go to class, fill them in, and do the practice problems that HE posts on blackboard and you should do well. He makes Chemistry easier to understand than any professor I've ever had. He can seem mean but he's really not. As long as you make the effort he will be very helpful.
Okay, maybe not the coolest ice cube in the box, but he is very helpful, punctual, organized, and presents his material in a structured manner consistent with homework, iClicker quizzes, and even exams. I dropped due to long term illness. I don't think he has received a fair analysis on here.
I couldn't learn from this guy. It was like he just spat out the info and expected you to know what he was talking about... I couldn't follow him and ended dropping the class
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR UNESS YOU WANT TO TEACH YOURSELF CHEMISTRY! Constantly late, even on exam days! Takes 2weeks+ to return grades. Does not answer questions in class. Uses projector, doesn't even write the notes legibally. Doesn't care at all if you don't understand the material and intentionally tries to fail 30% of the class.
People who complain about this professor likely put no effort into the class. His lectures are supplemental to the reading, and he won't slow down the class for the students who haven't put in the outside work. He is extremely fair and willing to help you, but doesn't have time for students who have not even tried and just want the answers.
This was a difficult class for me - I highly recommend that you purchase the study guide for the final exam and complete all of the homework assignments; he was difficult to follow when I didn't keep up with the reading! Otherwise, he explained things as well as he could - very smart guy!
I'm not complaining here I made a 98.5 in the class. But, when you show up on the first day of class and say "never email me for any reason...ever.. I hate that and won't respond" you deserve bad marks on here for helpfulness.
I'm not sure what to think about this class. I'm very intimidated so far. I'm not a chemistry type of person. I'm a bio major and have done well in those courses. However, our first exam in his class is this monday. I'm terrified. I feel that I haven't learned anything even though I've studied very hard.
You will almost be teaching yourself this class. This teacher is moody, does not return grades in a timely manner, nor does he have a good teaching method. I would advise anyone to not take his course, you'll be in for more frustration than you deserve.
You will be teaching YOURSELF in this class... Your book will be your new best friend!!! 5 Exams ALL of which are NOT multiple choice (the final is standardized). Avoid like the plague unless you are a chemistry expert!
Unless you have a strong background of chemistry, you will have a difficult time in this course. Although he offers decent notes, you will basically be teaching yourself the material. It's difficult to ask questions bc he talks right over you and will slightly insult you if he feels your question is dumb. Try another professor if possible.
Overall, not a terrible instructor. He did make a few concepts seem more complicated than they were. I received tutoring and learned much more from my tutor than him. He did NOT respond to emails from my class and became irritated when I approached him with a question after class. His exams weren't easy but they did prepare me for the final.
Easy class. Go to every class and fill out the lecture outlines he provides you on Blackboard. Study only the concepts that he tells you to study on his "What you need to know for the exam" handouts, and just look over the practice problems he worked in class. The test questions will be almost exactly the same, with a few numbers changed. Easy A.
Mr. Burns is definitely a difficult instructor. Unless you have very solid chemistry knowledge I suggest getting a tutor. Though, if you go to him for one-on-one sessions, he is very helpful but while class is going he enjoys rambling and some things he says can be puzzling or odd. Going to class is NECESSARY so don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
He does not like anyone to ask questions during class, makes you feel stupid for asking. If you are not that interested in Chemistry but need to take it because its required then try reading the book prior to attending class. His handouts are very helpful but the textbook was most helpful.
The main thing you should do in this course is read through the practice problems and show up to class. He doesn't drop tests but the minimum for an A is 91. His tests are not multiple choice and you must have a firm grasp on the equations associated with the word problems, which really helps on the final.
This was the hardest class I have ever taken at UNCG so far. All of his tests are free response, and he does not curve. On every test there a couple of weird conceptual questions that are not in the notes or discussed in class. Avoid this professor at all costs, unless he is the only one teaching it. The final exam is cumulative from chem 1 and 2.
This class was very rough. Burnes is not an easy professor. His exams are free response. You need to have a firm grasp of the material to do decent on his exams by doing his practice problems. On his exams there are some weird conceptual questions that are not discussed in class or seen in the notes. He doesn't curve any of his exams.
Burns is not too bad of a professor as I imagined. His exams are free response but is definitely willing to give you partial credit when the problem is attempted. He thoroughly explains problems during his office hours, and do his practice problems as they help on the exams.
Burns is, by far, one of the worst professors I have ever had. He doesn't "teach", he spits out information at you. I studied, read, did practice problems, and the hw and still didn't know what was going on at any given point in the semester. If Chemistry is not your thing, he is DEFINITELY NOT the professor for you.
You HAVE to print his lecture notes before coming to class, or you will miss things or write the wrong things down. Tests are frequent, but under 10 questions, all short answer with multiple parts, so you have to know EVERYTHING. Final is easy because he doesn't write it. Not available during office hours.
Burns is not that bad. If you show up, print lecture notes before class, do the homework, actually do and memorize how to do the practice problems, and bring your clicker to class you will do fine. And there are like 6 test so if you do everything I listed you can bomb no more than 2 and still do fine. There's so much opportunity to do well.
There are a lot of exams, but they are open ended answers. 9-11 questions. One extra credit problem. Get it wrong? Instantly 100105 on exam. No curve. Does however give partial credit. Do the practice problems. Do the homework. Come to class every day for clicker points. Take good notes. Writeprint out pre-lecture notes. Do problems in book.
Dr. Burnes is an extremely nice and helpful professor. I HATED chemistry, but now I actually like the subject thanks to him. The class is tough, but an A is very doable if you put in the effort and really apply yourself. If you do put in time, and try to cram study, you will not pass or do well.. Overall, he is great, tough class, but I loved it.
I really struggle with Chemistry, especially with UNCG professors but Mr. Burns really made the information clear for me. I had a tutor as well but I recommend you read the material before lecture and pay attention in lecture! He can go a bit fast. STUDY, STUDY, STUDY! and do the practice problems! The tests are VERY similar to practice problems!
He was very bad explaining concepts. He just reads power point slides to you. There is very little explanation of concepts or back and forth with the students. He was also very awkward as a person and a public speaker. All of this made it hard to lean. He's not very tough though. Youcan get an A without learning very much chemistry.
Slow- He took forever to grade tests. We took new tests well before receiving grades on old tests. unclear- he just reads power point slides to you in lecture. Easy- his tests are easy, probably because people wouldn't do well on a difficult test considering how bad he is at lecturing.
Prof Burnes is a good teacher. He has a genuine interest in chemistry and teaching which is in short supply these days. This class was intense for a 100 lvl class and more intense as a condensed summer class. 2 tips - 1) do the reading and homework and 2) do the practice problems he provides. Practice problems + clicker questions tests material
Excellent professor, made me want to minor in chemistry. Very precise & organized. MUST print lecture outlines before class, but the organization in the outlines is phenomenal. Very little HW. Clicker pts are easy to get if you LISTEN. Office hours aren't flexible unfortunately. Highly recommend sitting in front. Expects thorough detail on tests.
Doesn't allow ANY communication by email, instead demanding that you see him in person. Unhelpful in almost every possible way, and actually berates students for asking questions during lecture.
His tests are hard, and he becomes nothing short of annoyed when people ask questions in class
I went into this class having heard horror stories about him, and they were mostly right. Unfortunately, he is the only professor that teaches che114 on campus. Just make sure that you fill out the teacher evaluation at the end of the semester, and do more than you think you need to do for the tests because the material he gives you doesn't help.
Beware, unless you already know everything that will be covered in his class.
His lectures are boring and impersonal. He makes no effort to explain why things work, or make the subject exciting. He is also very cold and unfriendly.
Expects students to somehow completely know the material before they even get to lecture, and has absolutely no patience for questions. One of the most annoying things about this course was the time it took him to grade tests; it was commonplace to wait 3 weeks or more, which typically meant that another test arrived before you even got the first.
Oh man. I struggled in his class when at first and I don't know how I managed, but I busted my butt on the last three exams and then the final helped out a lot - that's how I got my A. Just prepare yourself for this class. It's not difficult, just do practice problems and understand the material.
Mr. Burnes is exceptionally helpful after class and during office hrs, doing whatever he can to help you understand the material. His class (114) and Gen Chem 111 are both hard pressed to squeeze in lots of required material in a semester, so classes are lecture. It's a super tough course, but hard work and commitment will yield good results.
Not that you have a choice in the matter (he is the only instructor that teaches this course at UNCG), but registering for one of his classes is pretty much volunteering to teach yourself all of the material. Sign up for tutoring early on because you may as well not even have an instructor, for all the good going to this man for help will do you.
Dr. Burnes has great lecture notes. Honestly, if you go to SIP and do his practice problems you will excel. Make sure you try and get old tests because they are always helpful. I made an A in the class. It wasn't easy but I put in work and got good results. He's also a really nice man and loves when students talk to him. I enjoyed his class!
I think Dr. Burnes is a great professor! His lectures are quite long but he is trying to compress all of the information in a small amount of time. People complain about his tests being hard but honestly he gives you exactly what you need to know and a formula sheet. I really wish the final was written by him too. You'll be fine!
Professor Burnes moves relatively fast during his lectures, but that's because he has a lot to cover. The best part of lecture is when he laughs because he sounds like an adorable hyena. If you do the homework and use the practice tests he provides you with, you should do well on the tests. He gives descriptive explanations for each question.
There are 6 exams and 1 final exam. Those exams are not easy but it's not crazy difficult, so as long as you do the practice exams and do the review problems at end of the chapter of the textbook, you 'll be good! His in-class notes are very useful, so you gotta be in the class. 2 HWs for each exam, those take about 1-2 hrs.
I am taking Burnes for 114 this summer and we have 1 week left so here goes: - Participation matters, don't miss class - No quizzes but clicker questions in class - All powerpoint lecture - No curves but 1 EC problem on each test worth 5 points - Fairly tough grader on sig figs/units - Gives practice problems b4 test which is 90% of the test
He was a horrible professor. He was sarcastic with students and wouldn't answer some questions. I felt like I had to teach myself everything because he just repeated what was on the PowerPoint.
Go to his office as much as possible and make sure he knows who you are! I'm terrible at gen chem and I had a 69% the entire semester, but it was bumped up to a 70 at the last second and I'm 98% certain he had pity on me and raised my grade since I was in his office so much. He isn't great at lecturing, but okay one-on-one.
I honestly didn't like his class. He doesn't post his lecture notes online, so if you miss class that's your fault basically. The clicker questions are graded for accuracy not attempt. His practice exams are not related to his exams at all. Material is difficult and is a loadful. He stricts very harshly. The majority of your grade are the exams.
Great professor, you will love his laugh. One of the great things about his class is that he tells you EXACTLY what you need to read, rather than making you read an entire chapter wasting your time. This is very helpful in understanding what you are working one. NOT terribly too much reading.
Professor Burnes explains potentially complicated concepts in easy to understand terms. If you can do his practice problems (not textbook problems) then you already know how to do his exams!!!! They may look different but uses the same logic from the practice problems. You can ask him questions after class also. Great professor, people just salty.
This is a very hard class if you have this professor! He is a very tough grader, and his lectures are very hard to listen to. I found myself using the book a lot, and they are what got me through the class. He says that the book is "wrong" but it was the only thing that helped me get Bs on the tests! Attendance is mandatory & lots of iclicker Q&A!
He clearly knows the material, but expects you to learn it the way he knows it and won't elaborate further if you are confused. I tried reaching out to him, but he never got back to me.
He is very well organized. His lectures are clear and concise, as he is very knowledgeable. He does not give too much homework, but expects the students to study. He is one of the best professors that I have had.
I liked his classes. They were interesting. He gets into his teaching and adds extra things. His pet peeves are 1. No phone use of any kind, no phone sounds, and don't look down for too long. 2. No side chatter when he's talking. Conflicts arise because students rebel in these areas. Expect 4 tests and ACS for the final. He uses the IClicker.
EXCELLENT PROFESSOR!
WORST PROFESSOR! His lectures are extremely outdated. If you an A student be prepared to settle for a B as his grading scale is terrible! He says his class is hard, but that mean HE CANNOT teach the material correctly. Avoid taking Gen Chem 2 at UNCG since he is the only professor.
He is an amazing person, but his class is hard. He gives you notes to print out before the class and then you fill them in. He doesn't post the powerpoints, so you must come to class. Also, no phone for the class period or he will take it till the next class or drop you from the class if you don't give it to him. He is very helpful in office hrs.
Horrible. At best he gives one example of a question and when asked how to solve other similar examples, he brushes it off by saying you should be able to solve it based off of the singular example that was given. He incorporates some calculus at some points, which can be confusing. Take this class at a community college if you can.
Not a good teacher, be prepared to learn the material on your own.
I hated him he was rude and bitter to al his students. he made class way harder then it should be by not letting us take notes on a laptop had to be paper. He refused to slow down on how fast he went in class event though the majority of the class asked him to. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
Although I enjoy Dr. Burnes 1-on-1 out of class, his lectures are WAY overcomplicated. He uses complex terminology where it isn't necessary. I got an A in GC 1 and am fighting for my grade in GC2. Exams are very difficult and he marks points off for ANYTHING. I'd recommend taking this class elsewhere. He also doesn't actively update Canvas.
Attendance counts get practice test
very hard sometimes his explanations are harder than the book explanations.
Not as hard as people say. If you just really study the study guides he provides you should do just fine on the tests, at least thats what works for me. Clicker questions every class that count as a collective test grade, so you have to show up to class. Also no laptops or food.
Very difficult class I would study the study guides and even then it wouldn't be good enough. Lots of people in my class also found it very difficult.
He is a great guy, and his class was easy. I ended with a grade of over 100%.
This guy teaches like you already know the material his class is hard personally think that we need more teachers teaching this because its hard for no reason
He doesnt post the powerpoints on canvas so you HAVE to go to class as well as he does random clicker questions a day so you really wont pass if you dont go to class. Also he doesnt give good feedback on the powerpoint if you have a question he just answers questions as though you should already know the answer or as if the question was stupid.
Dr. Burnes is a very knowledable but lacks teaching skills. He moves through powerpoints very quickly and doesn't post the completed powerpoint online so if you miss information you are out of luck. He assigns homework that is very difficult and does not relate to the material. In his own words "homework is just for points. I would not recommend.
Burnes unfortunately lacks the ability to convey material effectively to students and provides insufficient test prep material. His class is very test heavy, which results in lower overall grades as the tests are extremely difficult. For these reasons, I would advise students to take chemistry with a different professor.
I would not recommend taking a class with this professor. The information was taught poorly. Also, I felt like we was supposed to already know the new information somehow and it was difficult to ask questions when you are made to feel like you are stupid. I would take the class from somewhere else if he is the only prof (in all honesty)
After reading the long thread of how this prof was horrible, I was afraid I'd bomb this class. He was very straight forward with what was on the material and the TA definitely worked beside him to and created practice questions-which if you understood you'd get at least a B+ on the exam. His lectures a thorough and gives enough examples for clarity
Dr. Burnes is the best chemistry professor I have ever had. I have had several courses / instructors. He did a great job condensing the material for an online, accelerated summer course. He helped me have a much better grasp on chemistry than I have ever had. If you seriously put in the work, you will do great.
I read a lot of the older reviews and was super nervous to take the course with him. Was pleasantly surprised - he's the definition of fair. No trick questions or anything like that. Do your work, be responsible and don't slack off. You will be able to do well in this course. Also he replied to all my messages as well!
LITERALLY AVOID AT ALL COST
Had him online this semester. Very lazy about putting in grades. Rarely responds to emails and when he does its days later. Very poor interaction with students.
You should "NEVER take this professor you have to do som much reading by your self all he does is go off the PowerPoint which is hard to understand for people who are trying to learn something new. Although this isn't my major it was required for me to take this or physics and all I have to say is that Im sure that people who had physics
I had him online bc of COVID-19 and lets just say you need to be ready to teach yourself. I learned more from the textbook. He takes forever to respond to emails, and when the lockdown browser messed up my test and only gave me 30 mins he said I had to take what I got, because Id already seen the test. Avoid if you can and take Dr. Hu.
His lectures are very dense, but be sure to watch them if you are online. The exams vary in difficulty, but the lowest gets dropped, all multiple choice. The practice problems prepare you for the exam. Chemistry is a difficult subject, but his class broke it up into digestible pieces. Not the best lecturer, but does the job.
I was scared to take Dr. Burnes class because the reviews on here but, when I took it in person, it was much easier than I anticipated! The material tested on was basically from the lectures, very straightforward.
I will be honest. Dr. Burnes was much more straightforward than PK. His exams are free-response, so you really gotta know what you are doing. Attendance is not mandatory, but if you want to do well in the class, definitely attend the lectures.
his handwriting is awful so u cannot read the notes half the time and you just have the test grades. he doesnt add any more grades until after the last test. takes off points on ridiculous things and treats every test like it is the MCAT (checks IDs, assigned seats, other people in there to check for cheating) He teaches like u should alr know it.
- overall a well taught chemistry class - you need to study and do the practice problems - If you show you care about your grade, it goes a long way - SI sessions help - Go to office hours/tutoring - You need to go to class to understand the material - Do not be intimated by other comments but be prepared - lowest exam and homework are dropped
Dr.Burnes is a very nice man but his lectures are very hard to understand. He tends to keep moving forward and claims that there is no time to review things. He gives hw assignments but says that they have nothing to do with the test. This class is very exam based, so make sure to study as much as possible.(SI sessions is what got me through it fr)
Dr. Burnes cares for his students and has a passion for chemistry. This semester we used ALEKS (online adaptive learning platform) and I found it fun, motivating and helpful. However, ALEKS can be stressful (knowledge checks). Participation matters because there are graded in-class assignments. Dr. Burnes is a fair grader.
Prof. Burnes is amazing when you get to know him. Lectures can be boring but he gives a lot of extra credit opportunities. Tests were open response (minus the final) so you have to know what you are doing but he gives partial credit for trying. Also, we did in class activities, which help a lot for the tests. If you study you will be fine.
Professor Burnes really knows what he's doing. He gives you a simplified version of how to do calculations and could save you extra time. The in class activities are extremely helpful and he will drop the 3 lowest grades. Everything on the tests are based on notes and from homework. Highly recommend going to class because it's helpful.
He doesn't really slow down when it comes to notes. You can BARELY read his handwriting. The tests are sometimes not for the notes, I can understand ALEKS better than his notes. Also, what I don't like is that he grades everything AT THE END! Don't take him for your OWN good!
He doesn't slow down for you if you are still taking notes, he just moves on to the next section! His handwriting isn't the best, you can BARELY understand what he's writing! The tests sometimes aren't based off of the notes we take in class! I can understand ALEKS better than him and his notes! He grades everything AT THE END! :( BEWARE OF HIM
Prof Dennis is a good professor. I see a lot of people talk about his notes and that he moves too fast but, he makes sure to post the notes on canvas after class. (Handwriting needs work). There are graded in class assignments. ALEKS helps. But really do study the practice problems before the test. Try not to be too lazy. He's really helpful.
Fair Kind He teachers to ensure understanding of material without memorization. He is approachable and easily accessible outside of class for clarification. He makes you explain the why on tests not just giving answers and gives points for effort not just correct/incorrect answers. The course is challenging but you'll leave understanding Chemistry
Awesome, thorough and fair. Tests are hard but you have to Study Daily and you will pass them. He gives points for effort and builds in points in other assignments to boost your grade.
Nice, knowledgeable, & fair. He simplified concepts & made it really easy to learn chemistry. Everything on the exams & in-class activities were in the lecture notes, & he doesn't surprise you with anything. I never used the textbook, only his lecture notes bc similar problems in the notes appeared on exams! Try not to miss any classes.
Really good prof. He taught very well and provides you with everything to get an A. He posts lectures & practice questions for each unit/exam & it shows up on the exams. No quizzes. Only homework, in-class activities, & exams. You get partial credit on exams, so don't leave anything blank. Very good professor
Tests are written responses, which is a good thing since as long as you write something you get partial credit. In-class activities and Aleks assignments make up half of your grade so it's very possible to get an A while not doing well on exams. However, exams were like practice problems and lectures so doing well is very achievable.
He provides study guides that contain everything you must know for the exam. Practice questions are similar if not identical to the ones you will see on the exam. I found the class to be really fair, and I really thrived in his classroom. He even drops one test (ex. the final), and there are 80 possible bonus points. Would take again!
paper exams, no multiple choice questions, tough grader and takes off points for every small mistake, will only grade exams for majority of the semester, in class assignments and homeworks wont appear/be graded until end of semester, little to no extra credit, homework is on Alek, 5 exams and 1 finale(cumulative) exam. overall wouldn't recommend.
on paper exam, no multiple choice questions, tough grader/take points off for every small mistake, 5 exams and 1 finale(cumulative), only exam scores will be available for majority of semester, homework on ALEK,little to no extra credit, wont grade/send grades for in-class and homework assignments, cant tell what overall grade is, wouldnt recommend
Lectures can be tough to follow, but engaging with the material and using resources like unstuck ai for study prep really helps. Exams are challenging but doable if you stay on top of the work.
Prof. Burnes can seem tough on the first few lectures, but he's actually a really good professor. As long as you show up to class (which isn't required) or do the guided lecture notes you'll do well. He prints off and hands out the notes every class and posts the completed version on canvas. Only complaint is the lack of assignments and ALEKS.
I think Dr. Burnes is an ok professor, but you can easily do well in his courses. I personally struggle with the way he teaches, but I am still able maintain an easy A. There are 5 Tests (lowest drops) Regular ICAs you can do with peers, and open notes to practice before tests. study guides helpful. For people who want to score well over learning
He's a great lecturer! He's very clear in his expectations for you as a student, and the way he teaches chemistry makes it very easy to understand, it's very cut and dry. Throughout the semester, you have the opportunity for 9% extra credit. There is a lot of work, with ALEKS but its perfectly manageable. Gets easier as the semester goes on.
Dr. Burnes can come across as intimidating during the first few lectures, but if you put in the time and effort, this class will be good for you. Despite personal challenges, I recommend reaching out to Dr. Burnes as he is very forgiving, so long as you are honest and put in the work.
Dr. Burnes is lowkey goated. He may be intimidating, but honestly all you have to do is attend lecture, study the notes, and utilize ALEKS to practice the material. We did have a textbook, but I wont lie, I didn't even crack it open. His exams are NOT multiple choice so get as comfortable as you can with solving/identifying problems. ICA's were EZ.
He is actually a really good teacher, During the lecture you get printed out notes that will help with the test. The tests are honestly super easy, you get study guides that are basically almost identical to the test. Every exam iv'e took for his class which is 5 total have been 85 and above, so honestly if your failing your not trying :( ! .
