Did someone say "terd world country"? this guy is awesome and easy. Hes such a funny and caring guy, with a cute accent. You gotta love Canterbury. Boring but just so lovable.....

such an easy class.... hes so oblivious to whats going on and if you tell him what to do he does it. if you say "we should get an A for that" he will give it to you and agree.... boring in lectures and never really talks about soc. but easy class
Easiest Class I've ever taken in my life.
prof. canterbury is very easy and funny, you don't need to go to class but he's a hard grader
If you appear interested in the class topic, class will not only be informative but also enjoyable. Dr. Canterbury is an easy going, intelligent professor. I advise all to take a class with him.
The class was quite easy. We didnt learn much about sociology, but had fun in the meantime discussing random other topics of interest.
Terrible class, terrible professor. He may be a nice guy, but i dont even know if he knows anything about sociology. If you want to take a class where you do nothing and learn nothing take him for SOC 100. If you want actual knowledge, look elsewhere
EXTREMELY EASY- Guaranteed A for showing up
No Comments
Seriously if you want to get an A for doing nothing take one of his classes, he is by far the best teacher in this school. Hes so funny and always gets off topic.
Easy tech, smile and say a few words in class and your good todo, as well as doing the papers and its easy....
if you need a GPA booster he is the guy. Best teacher at this school.
he is the man. his class is so easy and he will def look out for you. great man!!! great great man!!
Very easy teacher.Just go to class.Thats all you have to do and you will boost your GPA.I suggest you take sociolgy with Dr. Cantebury
This class was so easy. The grade was based on a few papers which are very easily graded. No need to buy the books bc you dont have any tests on them. This professor is so nice and laid-back, he's an awesome guy. Take this class if you need to boost your GPA.
A gushing fountain of knowledge. Very prepared and detailed. The best class I have ever Taken in my Life. YOU ROCK. Woa, Dr. Cantebury
Just be nice to him and you will be fine.
very easy
easiest class ever. The guy doesn't do anything in class and you have barely any assignments. He is absolutely hysterical. Just go to class and listen to his GREAT accent....no words to express how easy and great this professor is!!
What a waste of time ... attendance counts big time... everything is group work... you only need the book until the midterm the "final" is a group project each person writes 2pgs... way too easy. all he cares about is the ecsu choir in which he sings in. unbelievable that i'm paying good money to learn nothing.
I wanted to fall asleep while he was teaching... it was painful
Dr. Canterbury is a down to earth professor, lets everyone express themselves openly in class discussions, he has good humor and grades fairly easy. I suggest taking a class with him and hes WEST INDIAN so he has alot of culture and stories
Honestly i ha ted the class and dreaded attending. Attendence is basically your whole grade and then a group project that you do throughout the whole semester. It is so boring and pointless. We had to write something about "what is sociology?" and that was just basically it. He just doesnt really teach but he is a very nice and caring guy.
kinda a pointless class..i hated having to walk to shafer in the morning to learn nothing but if you go to class you will get a good grade.
Professor just wants to get students interested in the field of sociology. Would be a good teacher in upper levels, but at the lower levels he makes his classes too easy. No work except for three papers. Class is an automatic A if you attend.
I hated this class. He is the worst teacher i have ever had in my life. he always goes off topic and talks about stupid Willimantic and the ecsu choir that he sings in. Attendence is a big thing with him and you do a lot of group projects. It's a waste of time and you're paying good money to learn about nothing. i dont even know what sociology is.
As a SOC major, it was a disgrace to see this class taught so poorly. I was told ahead of time I'd really be disappointed, but that really was an understatement. Picks favorites, selective, and can get really nasty to some groups. Oh, and the groups? You have one bad member, guess what, YOU'LL ALL FAIL because of it. I almost did. Good luck.
his class was pretty easy. the grades are based on attendance and group project papers that you do with ur group. his notes in class have nothing to do with ur assignments although they can can helpful in some cases.
The class was so easy that it was a joke. It was truly a waste of money and time sitting there learning nothing! The man is nice, but is a horrible professor. Perhaps an upper level course with him is ok, but not Soc. 100 -- Group projects are so easy but again, pointless. Truthfully its an easy A, but not worth the time and effort of sitting there
Prof Canterbury is a great guy however he seems too easily distracted and he veers off topic far too frequently. Wish the class had more guidance. Loved his accent however, and his lectures aren't boring.
The final and mid term assignments are hard (10 pages and 15 pages respectively, critical analysis, not research), and TONS of reading. Well over 1500 pgs over the semester. He gets sidetracked and his lectures often left alot to be desired. The man almost skipped Max Weber entirely, which was disappointing. I've heard there are better theory profs
Very nice guy and an extremely easy class. I was always entertained by his accent and terrible writing. This class is a joke though and is extremely easy, basically show up and you get an A. Not for someone who takes learning seriously.
I love Dr. Canterbury he is extermely smart and when you take the time to get to know him he has accomplished a great deal in his life time. Dr. Canterbury opened many door of opportunity for me.During my college career I had a class with him every semester.
NOTHING TO SAY...HE'S THE BEST, THAT'S ALL. IF U WANT TO HAVE A FUN COLLEGE LIFE, U MUST TAKE A CLASS WITH A TEACHER LIKE HIM. VERY NICE
If you go to every class you get an A. You do a bunch of group projects and don't learn a thing. It's a great GPA booster. Definitely take this class
Dr. Canterbury is one of the most considerable person I have ever met. He understands his students and always strives to do his best to assist.
Worst teacher I have ever had. Waste of time. Didn't learn a thing, forgets who is in his class and will change the attendance according to whether or not he THINKS you were in class when you may actually have been. GPA booster - only usefulness for this class.
I had to teach him how to use his email account and how to do several other things. He was rude and played favorites. Easy A, but waste of time and energy.
hes oblivious to other peoples concern
Doesn't give a damn about his students. Would rather talk about himself. If you have a question, don't bother bcuz he won't answer it. Singles people out all the time, insults people, talks about weed. WASTE OF TIME AND SPACE!
If you have him in the spring semester be ready to write a 14 page midterm over your break because its due the day you get back
worst prof I have ever had. too much work
Cordial, intelligent, and experienced professor.
Worst professor I've had at ECSU yet. The tests he gives are worthless, I've learned nothing thus far.
If you actually like to learn, his class is annoying and awful. He goes over the material but doesn't give tests. I've literally learned nothing in his class but how to sleep with my eyes open. He is the worst teacher I've ever had.
Make sure you go to every class. The class would be better if people participated, but people would rather whine. Tests are in essay form and ask questions about broad concepts gone over ad nauseum in class. Nice professor, always willing to help you understand if you ask.
Professor is easily misunderstood by those who can't grasp his level of intelligence or like to complain. Simply go to class, read the book, participate in discussions and you'll do well.
Canterbury is the most boring professor I've ever had. He claims you need to do the readings assigned but you don't. You only have a couple assignments but they're all papers and they aren't easy. I don't recommend taking this teacher if you actually want to learn something about sociology.
He is a great guy and very nice. Attendance is a huge part of the grade. I had him for SOC 101 and it was sooo easy. But this class is much harder. The readings are really hard to understand and he doesn't clarify a lot. First 2 exams were easy, but the final is pretty scary.
Reading material is daunting - 5 books (1500+ pages) of very dense, theoretical content. Use online summaries instead to better understand lecture and discussion. He picks on people who rarely show up or don't participate. Ignore syllabus - grades on papers/exams not weighted that much! Almost guaranteed A: GO TO _EVERY_ CLASS and contribute a lot.
He is the least helpful teacher I've ever had. The class itself was absolutely pointless and we learned nothing. He would have discussions about the most basic yet irrelevant concepts and pitched them to us as if we couldn't grasp them on our own, which was insulting. Worst class I've ever taken.
Attendance was mandatory but totally not worth it. All group work, and his lectures were pointless. I was looking forward to learning about sociology, but that didn't exactly work out. Take a different professor.
The content we go over is is very broad and can be a bit confusing. The attendance policy is strict, but worth it when you see your grade is an A at the end of the semester.
Attendance is mandatory, but only a few things you do in class actually matter towards your grade. He's nice, and he does teach certain topics very well. However, the group projects were boring and all in all I feel like I've wasted money by taking this class. It is an Easy A though if you're willing to show up to every class.
Dr. Canterbury knows what he is talking about and tries to help students. He is not very clear and talks in circles very often. He really values you trying in the class and in the readings. He is very long winded and boring, but he is always there for students, though he may not be helpful at all.
Get the books, but he LITERALLY reads word for word from them. 4 Major Grades, all group work. Just remember that "Sociology is a Science." He's really hard to understand and he can be pretty... opinionated. Take that as you will
He is not a terrible professor. However, if you get offended easily, I wouldn't recommend his class. It is not that he tries to do this but, he likes to play devil's advocate a lot which bothers most people. He means well and is a very nice man. Only used books for two assignments. Final is a research project. All three done in a big group.
There is a lot of required reading and most of it is incredibly dense. A lot of times it was had to follow Canterbury's train of thought and he's not great at explaining things. This class is mostly about politics so if that's not what you're interested in, I would find a different course.
I was extremely reluctant to take SOC300 w/ Canterbury and even pushed off taking it until my last year of college having read all of these reviews, but he really is such a kind and brilliant man. Yes, there is much reading, but nothing you can't find online in easier terms. Straight forward grading policy, received A's on every assignment.
Easily my least favorite professor ever. Very unclear assignment details and grading criteria. Rude to students. Always pushed to start discussion (not a bad thing) but would usually do so by making a very inappropriate comment to get someone riled up enough to finally speak. I took this for requirement but feel like I got nothing out of it.
Talks about the most irrelevant stuff that has nothing to do with the class. It's hard to follow along with what he's talking about. Wastes class time. Incredibly boring. I wouldn't recommend taking his class
Canterbury was one of the easiest professors ive taken, he will give you an A if you have perfect or near perfect attendance. However, he rambles on a lot about random things and can be quite boring at times. Also can be quite hilarious at times
At first I was afraid to take classes with this professor due to previous comments from other students and learned that he calls on you so you can speak up and learn to talk. He makes you do presentations, to show your potential and push you to greatness! My favorite professor! 4th class with him in 2018 :)
Assigned 2 books that were basically identical, just by a different author, so wasted money and time. Only grades 4 things. If you don't do subheadings properly for the research paper, auto C. He does not read the work. No feedback. Nothing. Lectures word-for-word from books. Doesn't know how to answer questions or he goes around them.
Professor Canterbury tries to be engaging but it mainly comes out offensive and rude toward people who have a different view than himself. He lectures directly out of the book, but never gets through all the material so you definitely need the book. Exams are just definitions straight from the book, so thats easy, but he is just awful.
Gets off topic a lot but his quizzes are so easy. He can come off as invasive sometimes but he doesn't mean to. He does have an accent so it takes a few classes to get used to it. Overall he isn't bad, just show up to class.
The tests are only definitions, which he gives you a terms list. If you become easily offended I would not take him. He says things to spark debate and get students debating. I wouldn't take him again.
He is my favorite professor and this has been my favorite class this semester. He does get off topic frequently but he engages with the class so that it's pretty fun; one time we spent like 20 minutes talking about 6ix9ine. He can come off as a little bit offensive, but he means no harm. This class is hilarious and EXTREMELY easy. Not a lot of work
He's literally the most annoying professor. He says offensive things solely to get reactions out of the class. The TA helped me more in the class than he did
I wouldn't take this class if you're easily offended because some of the things discussed are controversial. Other than that, Canterbury is a great professor! I found the class very entertaining and was the only class I looked forward to. The tests are just the terms in the book and class isn't work heavy. The class is pretty straightforward.
One of the best teachers Ive had so far at Eastern! Course is very easy, just show up and take notes. All tests are multiple choice and the text book is needed. He loves to talk and wants the class to discuss so he will call on people randomly but I barely got called on. I absolutely loved him and would take this course again!!!
Yikes. He said a lot of offensive things in class that shouldn't be said. His TA kept him in check by telling him not to say offensive words and phrases. The TA was amazing! I personally would not take him again. He was awful.
I took this class for my major, and I tried to be optimistic after reading some of the not so good reviews left on here, but I really can't say anything good about this professor. He makes rude and offensive comments, does not do a great job with lectures, barely answers emails, and is an impossible grader. Avoid this class if it all possible.
Professor Canterbury is someone that I recommend you stay away from. Very rude and opinionated, and cannot disagree with him, or you will be picked on. A very poor grader when it comes to assignments, and all the tests are just definitions from the textbook for an easy A. He repeats the same things every class, and gets boring. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
He says controversial and insensitive things to get people upset so they will participate in class. His tests are super easy but grades really hard on the essay. But if you are going to sleep during class set an alarm for the end so you wake up before it's over. He will leave the Webex on to see how long it takes you to wake up and log off class.
Dr. Canterburys class is pretty much a waste of time. He lectures pretty much the entire class, but likes to call on people randomly. He makes kind of rude comments and gets very sidetracked. Class is pretty easy but not a fan of Dr. Canterbury.
Awful professor. Is blatantly rude when you ask him to be more specific with anything. Called out a student for failing the past two semesters with him and not to ask why they have an F again after this semester. I would like to also include he is not accommodating at all, we are literally going through a pandemic, learn to be more understanding.
He isnt that bad. He is very confusing. He calls on people. I had him online and one day in person. He talks about the vocab mostly. He canceled class more then once. For our final was an essay and he changed it from 5 to 10 pages. He graded basically everyone in my class the same grade with the same comment as well.
He has such a major god complex to him in which he thinks he is above all at times. He does not respond to emails and goes off track a lot in lectures and sometimes puts people on the spot and makes them uncomfortable. He will purposely say things to get the class riled up. His class is easy but he is not caring of his students or their success.
Will not help through emails. Though the class is easy you will not learn anything unless you read the textbook.
a good but harder professor for a freshman. enjoyable if you like to hear a teacher ramble off topic. the final is hard but everything else is very do-able. the best part about the class that he wont tell you till the end is that attendance and particiption are extra credit and can raise your grade by 20% if you don't miss a class. worth taking :).
The midterm and final is the biggest part of your grade, so make sure you do really well on those.
He is a very funny professor. He loves to interact with students and likes to hear their opinions. He gets out of topic a lot, but he is passionate about what he does. The exams are pretty simple, you will need the textbook to get the vocabulary for exams.
This professor may be very easy to pass, but being a social work major I learned nothing from this class. You read the text and that is all that is discussed in class, he just stands there and reads it aloud. Does not help with any clarification and when asked questions in class makes students feel dumb to be asking.
Not hard at all, considering tests were based on textbook definitions. However, I noticed if he has to grade something himself, he will give you at highest a 93. He also brings up controversial opinions just to get the class talking. Just show up to class and do your work, and you'll have a guaranteed A.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS! There is a difference between being funny & being straight-up rude & Canterbury is the latter. Expect one-word responses to emails/concerns. Had a family emergency that caused me to miss the midterm and he failed me on it citing "there was nothing he could do." He messed up grading our final paper and refused to fix it.
DO. NOT. TAKE. (seriously). He does not give anyone above the grade of a 93 and if you want to be graded fairly, it won't be with canterbury. You will have the worst time having this professor accommodate any personal needs and that's if he gets back to you within 4 days of sending an email. Very offensive/disrespectful in-class conversations.
AVOID THIS PROFESSOR AT ALL COSTS. This is not a class as much as a 50-minute conversation where if you don't read the long passages then he will bully you and not stimulate the students. For the work, he basically wants to read the textbook and if he says to do a one-page summary don't even bother because he won't grade all the work he assigns.
Canterbury is a beast! Very smart and he likes to talk to students. Graded by only a few assignments so they are worth a lot. Must read a lot for this class, but its eye opening stuff! Have fun, do the work and participate! Laid back guy who is extremely knowledgeable. Read and don't be afraid to talk!
I had fun in his class, it was big on debates for somewhat "controversial" things that not a lot of people tend to openly express opinions on, but I enjoyed hearing what people had to say. I'm not a huge fan of him putting people on the spot to answer questions, but I rarely got called on (sit in the back of the room).
Prof. Canterbury was an easy professor and the class was easy too. Attendance wasn't mandatory so no one really ever went to class. Tests are all on vocab and done online, and the final is literally a 10 page paper that you have all semester to write. easy A.
Canterbury's class isn't that informative but it's very easy if you study and focus on the vocab words, his conversations can get kind of deep, but it's never at a level that would make students uncomfortable, the lectures are useless, but are funny to go to because he talks about random stuff.
Canterbury was beyond a character of a professor. The only assignments were quizzes and a final 10 page paper, and the quizzes are strictly vocab right out of the book. Class time is taken up by talking about irrelevant topics that are often beyond controversial and rude. He's not afraid to call out students and put them in uncomfortable positions.
Extremely immature and inappropriate. Class discussions are unproductive and he will make you uncomfortable for sitting in the front of the class. If you participate once he will depend on you for the rest of the semester. Purposely says controversial things in order to get a reaction out of anyone he can. Easy work though
He had a weird attitude. All they do is read from the book and note down vocab terms it was a very disappointing class. Would not take it again it was uninteresting and a drag to get through. your grade is based on several big tests on the book's vocabulary. final is a 10 page paper that you decide the topic of, which he gives little guidance on.
he just talks and talks and talks. He also brings up many controversial topics to get a class discussion. I was not about that at all. Although his soc100 class was easy and I passed, I did not care to be there in his class at all. Super boring and not enjoyable.
Easy class. Professor is very weird, and asks uncomfortable questions. You take 3 tests, and are grades on the final paper that is 10 pages. No homework. I barely showed up and passes with an A+ because it is that easy. Though it helps having the textbook for the tests, the questions go in order of the chapters of the vocab words. TEST=VOCAB ONLY
This professor was alright. His lectures were not that mandatory, and the classes were entertaining. The professor is a funny person and doesn't give a lot of work. Sometimes he can act a little weird and ask strange questions, but at the end of the day I would say he is mostly a good and fair professor.
