Very very nice prof but a useless class. Talk in class, parcitipation wroth 20% ! Very energetic to teach us calculations not needed for the final. Always smile when listening to others' presentations, even if it sucks, or when the time he told us his house got broken into.
he is a hard marker!
This course is ridiculous. He teaches about 5 weeks of the semester, and the rest of the weeks are student presentations. This is basically a self taught course. He's just there to mark your work. He offers very little guidance in class.
Very cool guy! He even told us about the time his house got broken into!
A very enthusiastic prof. Spends way too much time on long equations that don't really tell you much about accounting. All in all a useless class with a decent prof.
He is a very nice prof. If you want a good mark, you have to study a lot, since this class covers a lot of accounting principles and calculations.
Good instructor in lectures and tutorials although he is largely unwilling to discuss or change grades.
Very nice and very approachable. Asks a lot from the readings and exams really test your knowledge but if you do the readings you will do ok.
he is funny. but he jsut expect all of his students know everything. so you will need to catch up all those thing u dun understand by urself because when u go to his office, he will ask u to read textbook urself. ><"
he's nice. However, you have to know your 251 stuff very well, otherwise, you won't do well. overall, not bad.
A not helpful prof. his english is not good. and his making is not fair. test is difficult. u just cannot understand what he is talking about in the class.
Awesome prof! He's really enthusiastic about what he teaches. Super approachable and funny! he's not easy, you really have to work hard in his classes but he'll explain concepts to you over and over in office hours if you dont understand st! would recommend everyone take this "useful" class with him. he'll definitely change your view on accounting!
Professor Chung is a very nice person but honestly, the lectures are completely useless. All he does is read the powerpoint slides and does zero in-class questions. The only lectures that are important are in the last month of classes. Tutorials are useful.
He's a nice guy, always cheerful, and shows his interest in the topic. However, he provides no guidance while teaching; felt like a self-taught class. (Classes are useless)
Provides good notes in lecture and good examples in tutorials so no need to focus too much on the textbook. Midterm is ok, but final is long and difficult...you really need to know your stuff
Awesome prof. So enthusiastic and has great interests in accounting. Notes are essential; textbook is okay but not in detail because his notes are specific enough. He highlights all the important things in his lectures, so you GOTTA go. I got an A by attending all his lectures, memorizing the notes, and doing all the examples he gave.
He just makes everything ambiguious, never answers student clearly and expectes every student is an expert about accounting. If I knowed everthing, why do we pay such a high tuition to hire a persoon who only give us pressure and make us painful prof. I am wondering is this an essential quality to be a professional accountant?
Really bad one!!!!
Thankyou gau sir..you made me not go to my favourite class in the world.
Maybe last few commenters should study more (or at least take an English class). He basically gave away 1/3 of the midterm/final for free with the practice exercises we were given. Study the textbook and the exercises and you will do well.
Prof Chung is very professional and dedicated to this course and the Faculty. However, this course is hard, particularly for non-english-speaking students, like me. I thought I would I fail this course, but Dennis was so nice and gave me a much better-than-my-expected grade.
He teaches very well. Very helpful for group assignments and guiding you in the right direction. The course itself is heavy, but he made it easier by being available for help and explaining concepts well. I'd take the course with him again if I had to.
The group project is a lot of work so make sure you find a good group to work with. Overall there's a lot of material, but Dennis explains everything very clearly and is very helpful if you need clarification. I'd recommend taking this course with him.
Dennis is really a good prof, i just love him..I am looking forward to take his courses in the future.
He is BAD at explanation. The median of mid-term exam is only 58/100. I got A-, but I do not recommend taking this course with him.
Worst accounting prof I had in SFU. Very difficult exams , Each multiple choice questions have more than 20 options. He doesn't explain concepts clearly. And he has a very poor attitude too, because he would never answer a question directly. For your own sake, take accounting classes with other profs.
He is one of the BEST profs in SFU. REALLY knows his material and tries the best to make everything crystal clear. Very helpful and simplies all material for you. Go to lecture, it'll make ur life way easier. Not the easiest but u learn a lot at the end of day!
Imo, the 2nd half of the course was not well-structured, but that's probably b/c this is a new course at SFU. Prof Chung was always quick and responsive to questions via email and in person. Though sometimes he can't simplify complex ideas, He's extremely passionate about accounting and teaching. I would recommend acct ppl to take this course.
Highly recommended for BUS320! His exams did not have 20 multiple choices as someone noted below. Midterm and final were fair. The exam questions are similar to Dennis' assignments which he makes himself. I love that he does not heavily rely on the textbook and outlines all the important content himself. Great prof for accounting.
His exams are fair, similar to the assignment questions. But the midterm was quite tricky and time pressed. The final was more straightforward. Study his lecture slides well! The textbook isn't as relevant, and you should know the IFRS rules well from his lecture slides. Overall, not a bad course or professor!
Very knowledgeable man. The class is not easy by any means though. His classes require a lot of focus. There's a reason you need at least a C+ in this course to continue in the field of accounting at SFU.
Very fair exams. Assignments are made to give you a deep understanding of the course material. Overall great professor!
This professor and his lectures are quite boring; however, his lecture notes and assignments are very informative. Study them hard and you will do well. The exams are based off of them and are extremely fair. The textbook is useful for further clarification of concepts but is definitely not necessary.
He is very helpful and his lecture is very informative and useful. You will learn a lot of things from his lectures. Definitely recommend!!
The exams were pretty fair. Make sure you know how to do all of the assignment questions and study his lecture notes! However, the course isn't that easy - be prepared to study!
Dennis shows a high interest in the accounting profession. He is knowledgeable but his lecture is definitely not helpful. He never directly answers student's questions especially during office hours.Lectures are boring but in-class exercises are essential for weekly assignments. No need to read book; practice his assignments and you will be fine
If you need to take BUS320, take it with Dennis! He's definitely one of the profs I'd recommend. This course is not easy, I'm not going to lie. Just make sure you know how to do all his assignments then you will be alright :)
Dennis Chung is decent in a sense. He gives you lots of the questions on the midtermfinal before it. He's not clear however, covers content often unrelated to the exams and in general is pretty patronizing. Typically I wouldn't rate difficult in Beedie given the bell curve, but 35105 dropped and they weren't included in the curve-B top 33%.
very informative, high-quality lectures. Fair exams. Useful assignments. Dennis shows high interest for teaching and very very knowledgeable on the subject he teaches.. Best accounting instructor I ever had in SFU!
Dennis is passionate about Accounting. The course itself is hard but Dennis makes it very straightforward and clear. As well, he always tries to be fair when you come to ask him questions. Make sure that you understand the lectures, because he will test your understandings before he answers your questions. To me, he is funny.
Explains important concepts clearly and uses in class activities to reinforce the material. The textbook is not needed, because all of the important material is covered in his powerpoint slides. There is an assignment every week, that takes a long time to finish, but they are very helpful because his exams are very similar to the assignments.
The most PASSIONATE prof I have ever had the pleasure of taking! OBVIOUSLY the course isn't easy, but Dennis truly makes it bearable. I would gladly take him again.
The course is difficult. He explains new concepts well and gives good practices for students to work on. However, he will not tell you what is in the exams. He is likely to ask you study everything which is impossible as there are many new things. His theory questions are especially tricky.
Dennis is passionate about accounting and cares about students. His exams were totally the same as his assignments. There were some tricky part but its word only 5 out of 100 points so u can still get an A if u got tricked in some parts. however, to do well u need to really understand the assignments and solutions not just memorizing the solutions
Dennis gives good lectures and is more than willing to answer any questions you have regarding the topics. His lectures are really helpful for understanding the material for the homework and exams. Make sure you go over the homework multiple times so you understand how to do the work as the exams have a very similar structure in terms of questions
Dennis is a great professor, he is enthusiastic about accounting and is extremely knowledgeable and organized. There is a lot of detailed content to learn for this class, but he explains concepts thoroughly and provides a lot of sample questions. His tests are very similiar to the weekly assignments so make sure you understand them well
A brilliant and passionate professor. Brings alot of detail and examples to lecture, which for some can be overwhelming. Has extensive industry and academic experience, making his knowledge of accounting impressive. Assignments are not too difficult, the term paper will be challanging if your group is not cooperative. Always available for questions
Its going to be super hard.
This class is going to be a nightmare.
Dennis is an excellent professor who really cares for the quality of learning SFU accounting students receive. He is passionate for accounting and teaching. I would recommend anyone who wants to learn lots about accounting to take Dennis's course. The course may be tough, but that's only because goes in depth to help you in the long-run.
It is not an easy course. Enjoying the accounting world.
Dennis does absolutely bare minimum to further your understanding of materials. Rushes through lecture slides telling you what you need to know instead of teaching. Be prepared to teach the entire course to yourself. No topic is too difficult, but it takes time to fully understand what you are doing and why you are doing it.
His answers to the theory homework questions are SO LONG. They only confuse you. He goes on and tells you the whole story, repeats sentences which make no sense just to make it longer. He answers in chunky, heavy paragraphs which makes it very hard to comprehend and remember stuff. His classes are rushed and gives only a few practice questions.
Avoid Dennis if possible, unless you want to teach yourself the entire class. On our midterm for one of the questions, some of the versions of the exam had the right number for a variable, but the rest of the class had to calculate it on their own. Also, on the final instead of testing everything we learned, he only 4/12 topics that we learned.
Professor Chung expects students to put in a lot of time and work, which is fair given that BUS 320 material is not easy. He is knowledgable and willing to give insightful feedback on exams and the term paper. The weekly homework assignments take up a lot of time, but if you study them carefully, you will do well on the exam.
Dennis cares for his accounting students. He really wants SFU students to excel in the accounting world. His exams and material is very tough. However, the hours you put in will pay off. If you don't enjoy accounting, this course may be a nightmare.
He covers a lot of materials that are important for other courses as well as for CPA. Hes very passionate and organized, so as long as you put efforts, you will pass.
Dennis is an awful online prof. His lectures will cover about 10% of what you need to know for the absurdly large weekly assignments. He refuses to create his own chapter schedule so he just follows the WileyPlus timeline of TWO HUGE CHAPTERS PER WEEK when he can't even teach half a chapter in a 3 hour lecture. His expectations are beyond absurd.
What a joke of a class. The night before the midterm (the most studying I've ever had to do) he sends an email telling us that since his other lecture is starting their midterm, we won't be able to log in to the WileyPlus (the site that has our textbook and practice materials) for three hours! Avoid this prof!
Dennis seems like a really nice guy, and judging from past ratings is probably a great in-person prof, but he is clearly out of his element online. Copious amounts of homework coupled with the horrendous WileyPlus platform is making me tear my hair out for a 3-credit course. Highly recommend passing on Dennis until in-person lectures recommence.
Instead of canvas, he uses inconvenient platform with lots of errors for which you have to paid money. Too obsessed and annoying regarding "academic honesty" what makes him waste time on useless procedures during the exam. Inefficient structure of lectures such that 3 hours are not enough to cover the topic. Avoid him at all costs.
Dennis cares a lot about his students and teaching about accounting but I don't think online teaching is really suited for him. His main focus is academic dishonesty and his lectures don't connect to the weekly assignments at all.
Find another prof. Dennis doesn't listen to feedback and adds literally no value. His lectures cover a fraction of the chapter content, but he'll still test you on things he mentioned only in class. Unless you want to read 3+ hours per week (not including the huge weekly assignments), find a prof that actually cares enough to teach you.
THE WORST TEACHER I HAD!!!! DONT TAKE HIS CLASS DONT TAKE HIS CLASS DONT TAKE HIS CLASS Required you to read by yourself, and 3 hrs lecture is just reading slides, boring af, good luck if u send him emails, never reasonable! WDNMD
Dennis was out of his element teaching online but made his best attempt. The class is very heavy, and you have to teach yourself lots. Hes a better prof in person. Exam averages were low. For exams, make sure you know standards and his theory and do the end of chapter practice in Wileyplus! Practice is key in this class! Office hours help a lot!
I can tell that Dennis is very passionate about accounting, but I don't think he is a good online prof. I know this is a tough class but after the midterm, he always covered 85++ slides in 3hrs which was very tiring and not efficient at all. I always ended up studying from the Wileyplus textbook (yeah we had to pay for like 90$).
I was depressed throughout the semester cus of this class lol
Dennis is NOT a good online prof; was the worst online class I have taken. Weekly assignments take hours to complete and lack coherence with what is taught in lecture. Lectures are dry with up to 100 slides per lecture, telling us to self-study the rest. Frustrating class, he doesn't seem to know that a pandemic exists. Stay away if possible!
Dennis is fine as a person, but tough as an instructor. He is barely able to fit all his materials in a 3-hour lecture and still requires you to do a lot of self study for things he doesn't go over. Weekly assignments take up to 4 hours and his lecture slides are 80+ pages at times. Be prepared to put in a lot of work and suffer.
Dennis is passionate about accounting. Questions are always welcomed. If you are struggling with homework questions you can always go to his office hour for help. He did spend a lot time explaining the accounting principles and focus less on the questions. I definitely learned a lot of concepts and how to think like a professional.
He is a tough marker and very harsh in his feedback. He will make you feel stupid. Hes definitely passionate about the subject and its obvious he is good at what he does, but I do not think teaching is the best route for him.
Goes over difficult topics in lectures and presents them in different (simpler & interesting) ways. Wants to teach you the material and how to think like an accountant, which is valuable. Lots of slides, but lectures don't take full time, and slides are enough to study off of. Also asks deep question to prepare you for the essay question on final.
Almost 90+ slides for every weekly lectures, too detailed and hard to understand in his lecture. Self-learning is very essential for this course.
Dennis is the worst prof ever. Took his class last semester. In class he talks only about IFRS vs ASPE and on the exams it is practical questions. Such a waste of time. He made me change my concentration from Accounting.
Course is definitely tough. Professor Chung is really strict but is also very clear about the course material; this shows in his extremely detailed lecture notes. I do appreciate him going far and beyond and if you pay attention exams and assignments should be easier to go through.
He never directly answers your questions, his answer is long without any key information, which actually only confuses you more, and I even question whether he understands what I am asking. Get ready to teach yourself. . .
Overall not a class I liked. Good things: He was nice, knew what he was talking about, and was very professional. Bad things: His course was boring and not an effective lecturer.
Very passionate about teaching the material. Can make things slightly confusing, because he tries to give you all aspects rather than just the basic.
Dennis tries his best to lecture, but his teaching style seems out of date as he struggles with using technology. Weekly assignments are VERY time-consuming, and exams (on WileyPLUS) are difficult as you WON'T get partial marks for showing your work. Focus on knowing how to use each model rather than theory, as calculations are the primary focus.
Accounting is typically my favourite course and I truly enjoy learning the subject but I felt quite discouraged this time around and quite hesitant to ask question. I don't want to speak badly about the prof but this is my honest opinion about the course this semester.
Dennis is a very knowledgeable professor and goes out of his way to explain topics in detail. He gives out supplemental files to explain complicated even out of class. Make sure to show up for his class as the topics in 320 are tough and almost impossible to learn just off slides or the book.
His lectures are pretty dry in spite of his fair effort. This course is a bit of a steeper learning curve in comparison to 251 and 254, but it is doable. It just has a lot more content and higher level of understanding to get through. Exams were pretty fair. Personally, I struggled with the course concepts but course was overall alright if I pass
Class average's final grade is C+. Failed with him. Take 320 with a different prof as he marks hard on the paper. Exams are either you get it or you don't
in his lectures he doesnt cover any questions that are tested on exams. made us write an essay on midterm and final which was marked for vocabulary and grammar! passionate but not a good teacher.
Online exams that was changed to paper final due to cheating during midterm. Lectures don't help. Just read the textbook. MCs are worth 7 marks each and showing your work doesn't count for exams. Material wasn't hard but his testing style made it more stressful and difficult.
A$$ asf, read the textbook and go to class for the exercise worksheet only. He aint gon waste time going into small details so you should grind on your own. If you have him good luck
Elite prof, he can explain to save his life. All his class he doesn't mumble and explains the class concepts clearly and only speaks on the course concepts. He doesn't force you to go to class to grab a worksheet of questions since he will upload it later. Exams are great and lectures make perfect sense. Please take this class as you'll enjoy:)
Terrible Prof, he can't explain to save his life. All his class, he just mumbles about the most random things and makes going to class useless. He even forces you to come to class to get the worksheet and won't upload it. Exams are stupid too and lectures don't make sense. Please save yourself the pain of going through the class with him.
When reviewing my Midterm exam, the professor gave negative marks even though I got the question right. Instead of explaining when questioned, he yelled at me, saying I was questioning his judgment and he had "more important things to do than discuss this waste of time." Awful prof, nobody can understand his mumbling. Self-teaching is critical.
Dennis is a great, caring, and passionate prof. His lectures are quite heavy, and there is a ton of material. However, his in-class problems break it down into manageable steps. Be sure to pay attention during lecture, and do all of his additional practice problems; his exams are almost exclusively the WileyPlus or the in-class problems. Recommend!
My favourite Dennis quotes include: "USE ME! USE ME! USE ME!" , "YOU LIKE THAT?" , and "NO CHATGPT!! ONLY YOURSELFGPT!!!" He is unintentionally hilarious and he marks very fairly. Go to class and try to understand examples there. Sometimes it's confusing, but it's accounting: debits = credits.
Never answers questions clearly. Exams were fair but on the harder side, with low averages. Passionate and wants to be a good professor but can't explain concepts well.
Thanos....
Zaza pachulia
His exams are exactly like his class handouts. The homework is annoying and I feel like most students either had 40 hours a week to do them or copy pasted from Chegg, so if you don't, be aware you need to get like 99% on them for the curve. He's strict but fair. He will help you! Go to office hours, he loves accounting. Long, mandatory lectures.
Dennis openly humiliates people in class if you answer a question wrong or ask a question. He rambles and mumbles and is hard to understand, his slides are confusing and all over the place, and he only gives you his practice sheets if you come to class. He is one of the worst professors I've ever had. I don't see why he has to be so disrespectful.
Struggles to coherently explain concepts and rambles nonstop in disorganized 3-hr lectures he barely finishes. Only gives handouts in class, making attendance mandatory, but you won't learn much from class. Exams mirror homework..... yet very low averages. Mocks wrong answers in class “ohhh shouldn't be making that mistake read the textbook”. AVOID
Honestly a great guy who cares and is very passionate about accounting. A little hard to understand at times but hes the goat. Anybody saying they were humiliated by them in class prob couldnt take a joke and just wrote an angry review... Just do the practice questions he gives you every class and you should be good for the midterm....
I'm not sure why people don't like Dennis, I mean he's a cute guy. Although he did yapping A LOT, but I guarantee if you went to his class and LISTEN to what he said, you will do well! And honestly, if you don't understand anything, go to his office hour. Definitely worth it! If he teaches 321, I would definitely take him!
Dennis' split reviews are a natural occurrence of his teaching style and personality. I can understand people giving him both 5's and 1's. End of the day, he's a very knowledgeable prof who does his best to cover many complicated topics, prioritizing materials he will put on the exams. However, he can be rude and condescending. He's tough but good
