He marks really tough

Yowza! Gotta love that Aussie accent!
Best. Math prof. Ever. And that accent doesn't hurt either!

Absolute sweetie-pie, and incredibly helpful!

He SUCKS!!! One of the worse profs I've ever had. Thanks to him I had to delay my graduation by a semester. Thanks Dennis
makes stats relatively interesting. Nice old dude overall.
I love this dude, by far the best prof i have had, his accent is wicked and makes class fun and you learn. Big Ups Denny
I love Dennis!!He is so willing to help even if its into his time. His quizes suck but what can you do nobodies perfect, but if you study and work at it he's an easy prof. I still visit him even though I have been in his class for many semesters. You rock!
such a cool guy. Very personable. Sometimes alittle bit of a scatter brain but that only makes him more likable
He is such a great professor, very supportive and helpful!
Very arrogant, expects nothing but perfection, flies through problems without explaining how to solve it. Exams suck, his marking is not fair, one mistake=no points. eg.Very small mistake on one out of three questions = 66% on exam. Screw up on 2 and 33%.... He takes no prisonners.
I don't agree with anyone who doesn't like Dennis, he is the best professor at this school. He gives plenty of examples and his quizzes cover class notes. Just like any math course you will take if you don't apply yourself you won't succeed. Dennis will go the extra mile to help his students.
hard exam,so different from assignment
he doesn't make the topics very clear but they do become clearer after the tutorial. Class is interesting and it goes by quickly. Do all the problems in the text and the test will be easy
One of the nicer guys around Campus. He doesn't explain concepts that great in class, but is very helpful outside of class. Tests are a little tough at first, but you warm up to the material and he lets you use cheat sheets later, so it becomes easier. I recommend taking classes with him for sure! He gives out free Pronghorn tickets too!
Great guy... he is funny, and entertaining. He doesn't really explain things very well.
Dennis is a fabulous professor. If you don't get it, go to him after class, he won't let you leave until you understand. He is always willing to take time and help you. You are NOT going to do well unless you do all the work, though. If you do, an EASY A.
HE IS A WONDERFUL PROFESSOR. THE SUBJECT MATERIAL IS HARD BUT WHEN YOU GO TO HIM AFTER CLASS HE WILL SPEND AN HOUR WITH YOU HELPING YOU UNTIL YOU GET IT! HE IS FUNNY AND KIND. GREAT GUY! HE MAKES MATH FUN AND I HATE MATH.
Dennis is an awsome teacher. He is soo helpful and is really there for the success of his students. just dont be afraid to ask for help
Great, caring guy, but a bit scatterbrained. Isn't really great at explaining, but reviews so much that you'll get it eventually. Easy exams, but low class averages for some reason. Didn't even get close to finishing all the material, so avoid if you plan on taking more classes in the area - you'll be left behind once you get to the higher levels.
Excellent prof but has a tendency to be a little scatterbrained!! Willing to help until you understand the material. Definately go to class, the material is difficult and take really good notes. Always friendly and learns the names of all of his students, always happy to see someone come for help!! Very energetic and happy in class!! take his class
We werent given very much study material for the miderms but for the final he gave us lots of practice problems to work on which were very helpfull. He is a really nice prof but hard to follow because hes so random and just jumps from one thing to another
We werent given very much study material for the miderms but for the final he gave us lots of practice problems to work on which were very helpfull. He is a really nice prof but hard to follow because hes so random and just jumps from one thing to another
Great teacher, made each student feel like part of the class.
Connolly is a great professor, he's been teaching here since the University opened, and he really knows what he is talking about. He will go out of his way to make sure that you understand the material. If i was a math major I would defnitely take more classes with him!
Wow. Great professor, clear, concise, looked forward to his class every other day. Great guy outside of class as-well.
Great guy. Makes class fun as he can. Class is not hard at all with him. Fair on tests and no reason not to be ready for tests if you show up for class. If you need help outside class he is more than willing to help you.
Denis is an awesome prof. He makes stats fun, which is a job in itself! He's really willing to help if you have any problems with the material, and he actually takes the time to get to know the students. The exams are pretty much straight from the assignments and the quizzes.
He is amazing
Condescending prof! If you want to know the gist of Conollys antics( ex//Final exam, 4 questions, 4th question worth 25%....He tells us that 1 student out of 2 classes of 70 students got the answer) Hands out pop quizzes after teacher evaluations....Great teacher??
Makes the class fun and genuinely wants to help everyone.
Does not help you figure out answer but does it for you and send you on your way
Really kind teacher. He keeps making mistakes when he teaches and doesn't make sense when he's talking sometimes. Still a nice guy. Sometimes forgets to mention things that would really help when teaching students. Jumps all over the place from lesson to lesson...
you need to know the LOVELY BELL SHAPE CURVE. Sleep with it, eat with it, shower with it.
Great Prof! He's very helpful and makes stats fun! This is not an easy class, you have to come to every seminar and keep up with the weekly assignments and you will do well. I loved his class and would definatly recomend him as a prof!
Really great professor. Keep up with the weekly assignments, very easy midterms and final exam. Just make sure you know what he is talking about because he tends to jump around alot and become a bit scatterbrained. Overall a very decent prof. and a fair marker.
I think he might have retired :( but, I have never had a prof who cared so goddamn much. He is a brilliant man, and the nicest teacher ever. He is very passionate about teaching and about his students. He avidly attends everything going on at the school (plays, operas, sporting events, etc.) and encourages students to do the same.
The best prof I've had in my life. Makes things as easy as they can be. Gives useful examples, tries to bump your grade if you deserve it. Attendance is not mandatory but he gave quizzes and it is really helpful to listen to his lectures. I would take all his classes if i could.
Dennis is a pretty good prof, especially if you are intested in the material. His exams are VERY rushed, and his teaching style is good but not super organized. I would say take his class unless you are a slow test writer, or not very good at organizing notes. If you do the work, getting an A is doable.
Greatest professor ever. He has trouble walking normally and yet he teaches to the best of his ability. Really really caring and helpful. You will be insane to not take a course with him!!
Really nice guy and a pretty easy marker, he likes to give you the benefit of a doubt if you make a small error but not the best at explaining the material. EXTREMELY UNORGANIZED in his notes. His tests are decent, but too long for the allowed time, you are always rushed. No requited textbook, and he's all about saving you money.
I love this Guy, he is the best prof in the university, makes calc be one of the nicest classes, I positivly recomand him to anyone who is after good grades and donuts plus oranges. I admit, time is short for quizes and tests, but he has lots of options, you will be happy you took class with him.
For a truly unique U of L experience, take Dennis. One of the greatest people I have ever met and am grateful to have had a class with him. His tests are hard but he's a generous marker.
Fantastic guy, super nice. Drives a volkswagen bus, is in top shape (you should see him go up stairs) and is like 75. Don't be fooled that he is senile, he is 100% focused. Super fun class, one of the best teachers I've ever had. Feeds you oranges and donuts. Make sure you can solve problems quick for tests.
A wonderful man. He is very kind and has a sweet accent. I wouldn't recommend taking the class without previous calculus experience, he moves quickly.
Makes me want to be a math major the class is so fun!
Dennis is one of my most frustrating professors. Yes, he is a very nice man as all the other reviews say. However, he RARELY finishes an example and expects you to simply UNDERSTAND what he means. In class, he gets confused.. so stops and switched subjects! I'm usually a good math student, but I am struggling because the man cannot explain himself!
Dennis is a lunatic. He moves to fast and is possibly unaware that half of the class has never taken calculus before (as it is not a prereq)
I loved Dennis! Every class was interesting and entertaining, though it was often difficult for him to understand the questions raised by the students due to his hearing loss. However, I thoroughly enjoyed his lectures!
Does not supply a textbook or online notes, so there is nothing to refer to if a concept is unclear. VERY difficult to follow his examples, forgets he is TEACHING and goes through as if we are expected to know everything. 96% in pure math 30, nearly failed his class
Well, it's just a calculus 1 course..there shouldn't be a problem getting A+, so speaking of the aspect of his personality, he is simply amazing. He is very very helpful when visiting his office and tries to "actually" help students. You should be able to do well with Dr. Connolly. He has such a wonderful personality. Take with him.
I'm a math major and I thought he was absolutely AWFUL. He is ridiculously confusing to the point where I have no idea where he went off. Such a nice prof but he talks about random things for the first half of class, then lets you leave early. NEVER available for office hours and never responds to email. DO NOT TAKE IT IF YOU NEED AN ORGANIZED PROF
Dennis is a good guy. He is funny, however his teaching style is difficult to get used to. If you have not previously taken Math 31 or Calculus, I would not recommend him. If you have, you will do well, guaranteed. Tests are extremely fair, and on the second midterm a graphing calculator was allowed. THAT NEVER HAPPENS. So for that, he is awesome!
If you have no prior calculus experience or have not taken calculus for a long time, DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. He assumes you are coming straight from Grade 12 and have calculus and basic algebra fresh in your head. Because of this, he doesn't go into great detail on how problems are solved. Nice guy, but gets off topic easily and isn't organized.
Dennis is very knowledgeable and the way he did things really clicked with my brain, though I could tell it didn't with a lot of others and he didn't explain it differently. He marks oddly; every assignment is out of 10, so if you get 4 wrong on a 30 question assignment you end up with a 60%... Interesting class but frustrating for my marks.
Dennis is my favorite prof at the Uni. Sure he can be tough to follow at times but his little rants and comments make the class so much fun. He inspires students and creates excitement about the topic. Who would have thought I could grow so fond of Geometry. Take this class with Dennis if you get the chance!! What a beaut.
He is a brilliant and shining example of what an amazing, dedicated, student concious professor should be strive to be like. I sincerely wish all of my professors were more like him. He loves his job, he loves his students and he loves the school and it absolutely comes through. Wonderful experience being taught by this gentleman.
I am currently in Dennis's Calculus class and I highly recommend not taking his class if possible. As mentioned previously, he goes way too quickly and thinks that you remember absolutely everything you've learned in previous math classes. The class gets under 50% on a quiz and then he always says I think everyone sees the answers...no they don't!!
DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE !!!! He is awful and does not explain the questions on either the assignments let alone tests, unless you are a math genius get ready for multiple tutors and hours of tears in the library :(
Dennis is the bomb! As long as you apply yourself and ask for help when needed you should be fine! Dennis' love for his job and his students shines through his personality. It's always a pleasure taking his classes.
A very intelligent teacher, makes time for you during office hours. Is very helpful if you dont understand something from the lecture
He is the sweetest man ever and always willing to help, but he is a complete mess during lectures. He is unprepared and unclear, and only provides half finished examples and only some print out notes with explanations. I love Dennis as a person, but as a professor he is very unprepared and unorganized.
Dennis is such a wonderful person. He really wants to get to know every student personally. Yes, he can be quite disorganized and unclear in his lectures. If you ask him questions though, he will do everything he can to make you understand. He will even meet you on a Sunday night if you need help. Most of all, he just loves math more than anything!
Mr. Connolly's class was hard, I took stats 3 times and spent $120 a week on a tutor and barely got a C-. That nothing to do with his teaching abilities, I suffer from a learning disability. Mr. Connolly is an AMAZING TEACHER and will bend over backwards to make sure you pass. He's always willing to help and answer questions. AMAZING MAN!!!!!!!!!!
Try to avoid him if possible. He says he sees the answer to the question and does not explain very well on the concepts. Hardest class ever
I'm very mixed about Dennis. On one hand he is very skilled in the course material but he often won't explain things that he sees immediately. He keeps lectures entertaining but will often lose most of the class in a long example. I've heard from several students that if you take Calc. II with him, you should have taken Calc. I as well.
Really good professor, someone who really cares about the students and wants them to do well. Focuses more on learning by solving problems and tries to do as many problems as possible in the class. Although he is a very generous marker and tries to give benefit of doubt, I found the exams and quizzes were a bit too long for the amount of time avail
Dennis is smart, and clearly enjoys hockey. Unfortunately he does not explain concepts very well, and the tests are designed assuming that you are able to do derivatives "instantly". It's a decent amount of work, but not difficult to grasp. It's mostly memorization of patterns. Personally I found his class useless, but tutorials were good.
He cares about his students, is willing to get to know you and tries to help you out. BUT... his lectures are hard to follow. The textbooks he uses don't have extra examples, explanations or anything to help you out. He skips little steps assuming everyone knows them already. If you are not a strong math student you might want to avoid his classes.
Dennis is a wonderful prof! I would highly recommend taking a class from him, especially if you are going to take further math courses. His lectures are full of examples similar to ones on tests and he is a generous marker. He gives a lot of quizzes and multiple midterms, so it is quite forgiving. A great prof for learning how to problem solve!
Dennis is the G.O.A.T. at the U of L.
While I do give him credit for being caring to his students and willing to help, the way he teaches his classes and his ethics are just horrible! His communication skills are weak, he hardly shows up to his office on time when he needs to, & he expects you to know the material that you barely know along with finding assignments with little notice!
Dennis is an amazing professor and is very passionate about math, if you have a basic understanding of grade 12 math you will do fine in his class. His lectures were always interesting and he loved to help students when they had questions, he was one of my favourite professors and I would highly recommend taking any of his classes. Amazing prof.
Dennis is very kind and genuine, and you can tell he really wants his students to succeed. However, I felt a lot of the questions on the tests and quizzes were unfair. A lot of the time he had not discussed topics in class, and either expected you to remember from high school, or to have looked over it in the course pack. Final was easy and fair.
Dennis is a sweet old man so it's very difficult to hate him but his teaching is awful. He does nothing but examples over and over again and does not explain any concepts. If you take a class with him you will not understand anything for future courses in that area. You can tell he knows what he's talking about but he is not good at teaching it.
Dennis is an awesome guy, but his teaching suuucks! His lectures are really interesting & engaging however he's so hard to follow & he does example after example without ever explaining how he's doing it. All he says is "everyone knows the answer to this" and writes it down. No explanations. Your grade is 90% exams and 10% weekly assignments.
Dennis sometimes goes too fast and doesn't call on or answer to students during lectures but if you ask him a question after class he will make sure you understand the concept. Weekly assignments cover almost all the material and prepare students for the exam. Sometimes the exams ask a question that has not been taught in class yet so read ahead.
Dennis is very passionate about Mathematics and it shows. If you put in the work and have a good math background, you should succeed. Tests were fair. Go to tutorials!
My all time favorite Prof! Dennis is caring and willing to help those who are willing to help themselves!
Dennis Connolly assumes you have knowledge of new concepts and has no way of relaying information from his head to yours if youre not already advanced in what he is teaching. Avoid him if you dont already have a baseline of knowledge in the the class hes teaching.
Great guy. Hes getting a little old, but still teaches the course like hes young. If you need help understanding anything in his class, just see him straight after and he will be more than happy to help you
Professor Connolly has been one of my favourite professors. It is clear how much he cares for this university and his students. Although he rarely has office hours he is always open to meeting after class as well as answering emails quickly. He does expect you to be relatively knowledgable in the subject before hand, but his exams are very fair!
He is very hard to understand. He doesn't talk with a mic in a big classroom. Doesn't tell you the concept you are learning just goes into examples and he thinks that you understand it . The course says you didn't need any calculus background info but he talks about calculus like you know it already and makes you apply it to questions.
He only seems to go through workbook questions without explaining the lessons themselves, and the only helpful thing with this course was the tutorial. A handful of students passed our first exam, and students who had taken or were taking the exact same course with another professor didn't know what we were learning. He likes to reference calculus.
Dennis is a kind and compassionate professor who cares about his students, although sometimes lacking a loud enough voice for big lecture halls. Stats 1770 was an incredible tough course. However, he did assign higher grades than most individuals would have received on there own.
He's a legend. Even when I took him (2011 / 2012) he was almost at the end of the line in terms of his career, but he brought a positivity and an energy to class that was infectious. You could see the smiles on the kids faces, and sitting in that room could brighten your day. They don't make many like Dennis--respect!
Dennis is a caring professor who makes lectures engaging, but his teaching style can be tough to follow. Lots of examples, not enough explanations. Unstuck AI was a lifesaver for exam prep. Definitely do the readings and homework.
