As long as you read the material and do his extra credit you can do well in his class. Very interesting lectures if you care about Oceanography
He's funny, friendly, cool, and nice. What more could you ask for? Just read the material, don't be absent, and do the extra credit :) I'm taking him b/c I got a "D" with Garrison, and this guy seems way nicer and more funny.
He does not teach anything in the class. he just sings songs. Tests are based on his test review sheets. I do not think that the class is worth

Great class,lectures dont have much to do with text or exam. he hands out a study guide, and if you answer all the questions and study them well, you'll ace evry exam, i did. learn alot of interesting things. extra credit opportunities!

This teacher did not teach me anything... He did mention that he knows how to turn a woman into a little puppy and have her peeing down his leg! Very unprofessional!

Excellent teacher, a real scientist that knows his stuff, if you do not take advantage from his knowledge then you are propably a not so bright surfer from Huntington Beach, very easy, gives you every single question in exams...
His class is so boring. his tests are easy as long as you study test reviews. but he is not helpful.

Great teacher. He is funny and tells great stories. He will make you interested in marine science. Tests are based on study guides, if you do the study guide you basicly have the test in your hands.
Marine Science: He has pretty Great stories but tends to tell too many. Very interesting class if you like the Ocean. If you study the study guide you'll do fine. The study guide has most of the questions that are on the test it really helps.
This class gave me a new perspective to the ocean world. He is very helpful. Follow the study guides he gives for the test and you will be fine. If all else fails he gives a chance for extra credit-25 points which helps alot! Great enthusiastic teacher!
He's not a very friendly person. I never read the book, just looked up the answers to the study guide. I got a B. He'll drop you if you miss too many classes.
He is a great teacher. Very helpful, and a funny guy. I enjoyed his class and learned a lot. The Lab was so much fun very hands on.
This is not a hard class to take as long as you study the study guide well, then you have a great chance of getting an A. Mr. Kelly makes it very clear of what is expected from you when it comes to the test. He makes the subject very interesting as well.
I think professor kelly is great!The lab class is really fun and we do all sorts of feildtrips. The lecture class can be boring but overall is a good class.Also the tests for lecture and lab are the questions straight off the quizzes which he hands back to you to study.He is picky on his essays.
Lab is way hard for just 1 unit. Kelly is an awesome guy who is active in what he preaches, unlike a lot of people. He does a lot for local conservation and biology, esp dolphins. Very intelligent and knows his stuff. Lab is fun if you get into a good group, but there is tons of work
Mr. Kelly is a great teacher, and is very funny. He does repeat the same story a few times though, but thats because I have had him (not literally) 3-4 times. If you like Marine Science he is a great teacher to take, if your taking it for a grade and dont care you will be doing some work.

This guy is a peice of work! The lab class is way too much work for 1 unit, and the field trips are a waste of time. He's one of the best teacher's at theschool. He's funny, and smart. Somehow, though, he manages to bring up sex every other lecture. I think he's trying to appeal to the young'uns, or he's not getting any
This guy thinks the world of himself, which is evident from the beginning. The first quiz has like 3 questions about HIM and nothing to do with the subject. The TA had no idea what was going on (business major) Ridiculous grading criteria-2 pages of "critical thinking" a week, quantity preferred over quality. Made us feel like we were in 3rd grade.
His lectures can be boring, but his stories are always pretty interesting. DO THE STUDY GUIDES and you will do well!! Also he will drop you if you miss the class 4 times!!
Lectures. 3 tests. That's it. Review the study guide. Most of the questions on the tests come from that study guide. Go over all the study guide for the final exam. It should help mucho. As for the teacher, he's funny. Still, dim lights plus a man who keeps on talking can make you want to go to sleep.
DO NOT take if just doing for gen ed, you WILL regret it.Too much work for only 1 little unit.Definately not an easy A.2 page paper due EVERY class meeting and a test EVERY class meeting.One of the field trips requires YOUR OWN transportation to La Jolla(waste of time) and another one on a saturday(waste of time when I can be making $$ at work)
I don't know why everybody rated this guy so high. He rambled on about dolphins and other information that was useless to the test. The first test was chapter 1-5 and he only covered chapter one. He was unclear with what he wanted. I missed an A by three points and he wouldn't give it to me. Take Garrison, I know an idiot that got an A in his class
Nobody liked this class.Even half way through the summer semester, people were still complaining about the amount of work.This class has a rediculous amount of work. More work than my 3 unit english class.Do not take this class if you want an easy A.I heard Bender's geology 100 lab is pretty easy.Kelly makes us feel like we're stupid kids.
He loves to talk! He thinks that every student wants to be a m.s. major. Do not take him...Snyder covers the same material & makes it FUN.
I really learned a lot from this professor and had a terrific experience. There were a lot of students in my lect & lab who we really lazy and didn't want to work. We went on a really excellent oceanographic cruise.
A lot of work. But you're going to school to LEARN right? Take this class if you want to learn something. If you just want to get your unit over with, take something else. I took this class a year ago and I can still remember scientific names for sea creatures. emerita analoga :)
He may sound and act like a jerk about 95% of the time, but hang in there, do the study guides and you will pass his class, without a doubt!!!
Lots of work for one unit. Mostly easy busy work. Talks about sex and smoking pot alot, kind of crazy but mostly funny. Kind of a jerk but can be pretty cool. Field trips are waste of time. Gives extra credit.

I liked him a lot when I took his lecture class. With the lab he's unfair with grading, and picks favorites. Suck up to him and you will do well. Also, lab is so long and a lot of work for 1 credit. Be friendly with the TA's and you will do well, because they are the ones that actually help you and teach the class.
Although his classes are a bit difficult, you really do learn a lot about the subject.

Very biased regarding his views on evolution, makes fun of Christians sometimes, and is kind of a bitter person in general.. He also spits flem balls at students. On the other hand he is funny sometimes and this is one of the easiest classes I've ever taken. About 5 hours of study time per test and you can easily ace them even if you sleep in class
Good teacher. Really funny. Simulates whale sex with his arms. Tests are not too difficult.
he feels as though he must let you know that he's got a great amount of power over you and that you must obey him. he also makes fun of you and trys to belittle you.
Very good professor. He may be harsh at first, but once you show him respect (regardless of how long), he'll respect you back. Would take his class again.
Lecture, just listen and study. Do the study guide and you will be fine. For lab, he made everything sound so FLIPPIN' difficult yet they weren't. i thought i was failing his lab but ended up getting a 97%! He grades all the lab stuff pretty hard for the first couple of times but then he will give you full credit if you did everything!
You have to be open minded about science to appreciate what he has to say. I have taken all his classes he is so interesting and has so much knowledge if you are not interested in marine science I wouldn't recommend taking his class cuz you will think he rambles too much but if you do you will love it. He requires a lot of work but you really learn
he's kind of an @ss, pompus if you will. he can be funny, can be interesting, can be boring. dont read, sleep in class, do the study guides at 10:30 the night before like i did and you'll get a solid B in the class.

Be prepared to hear about his social life and things that you don't give a damn about for about 45 of the class. He pretends to be really entertaining, when really he just bores me. I wish he would just teach!! JUST TEACH!
Infinite blowhard. Talks more about himself than what to study. Talks about bonin' & drinkin', thinks he's "down" with the kids by doing so. YEAH, I want to hear out of his puffy, ruddy face how **** he got on a science vessel off the coast of Butt****, Alaska, and how he porks his wife on Valentine's. Gross. Tune him out; do the study guides.
Don't take this class with Kelly. I took him for both the lecture and lab. His test are very difficult even though he gives you study guides. He test you on five chapters at once and the S.G. take you weeks! I dropped the lab b/c it was even worse than the lecture. He also can't teach! He talks about his personal life, not marine science.
He's a funny guy but very mean and cruel. Hes helpful only if you suck up to him. He always gives me crap because I"m a quiet guy. I did more work for his class than any other class and he still fails me.

Professor Kelly's island ecology class was very interesting.The lectures are based off of powerpoints although he does wonder off on stories sometimes (which are interesting usually). His class is relatively easy-one research paper, 100 points total of extra credit, and quizzes that he lets you look at beforehand.oh yeah, a trip to canada included
I stumbled on this site and just HAD to comment! I was a student of Kelly's in 1986-88. I've been a science teacher for about 18 years. He and his classes helped launch my career. I worked with him as a volunteer for the CDSP then moved into a paid position. Seems like he hasn't changed! If you're into MS don't let personalities get in the way!
i'm dying in this class! his lab is just as difficult as it is confusing!
The lectures are pretty much pointless to go to because he doesnt really talk about the material. Sometimes he's funny and can tell interesting stories. Pretty much as long as you do the study guides and prepare the test you will get a good grade.
I hope you like to teach yourself, because in here you will! he does not teach to his tests and spends the time on tangents about his own personal ocean experiences. When it comes time for the tests he has not prepared you at all.
oh.. my... god... the teacher does not teach you anything. you'll learn a lot about his wife, kids and experiences in Alaska... but believe me.. you will not be tested on it. He doesnt teach you anything from the book, you just have to teach yourself and hope that you studied for the right things.
This guy has mandatory lectures to satisfy his overwhelming ego. There is no point to going to ANY of his lectures but he'll drop you if you do it more than 4 times. I could have easily just shown up for the exam days and got an A.
Loved the prof, loved the class. Grading is not easy, but as long as you do the work you'll be fine. Great stories and will keep you interested. Take this class!
He expects participation and it's easy to do because of his enthusiasm for Oceanography. He tells you up front what you need to know to pass. When he makes suggestions you will learn it means he wants you to do it and you get extra credit for it! You need to show up for lectures and pay attention if you want to pass tests and read your book
he doesnt even grade the students work his stupid tas do. his ta marissa is so mean she is so hard on everyone because she lives a bitter life. she is hard on everyone. i suggest taking the class with someone else.
kinda alot of work for 1 unit. its not hard work, but its work. 2 page essay a week, but you can write almost anything and get an A. if you are lazy you can still pass. dont ask for help or questions, not helpful. ask TA's. they are the one that grade your work. do your work, stay on their good side and get an A. but alota work for 1 unit.
Worst teacher ever!!! honestly thinks he is gods gift to man kind. I swear to god this guy is a mean person. constantly talks about himslef and what he contributed to science( NOTHING AT ALL) but he thinks he is the best scientist in the world.. Not to mention if you are not a good looking female this guy will not help you with anything!!

If you're a good student, this class is not hard. Read the text book and review the study questions. I worked in a study group which made the tests a breeze. He's a wonderful teacher and very motivating. Make sure to stop by one of his "lonely office hours." He's a fun guy to talk to about things other than class as well.
Really easy class. His lectures are a bit out there though and aren't really that helpful so it's kinda imperative that you read the textbook before any quizzes (which there are a TON of). Hes a funny guy and tells some interesting stories during class time. I did other homework during lectures and studied the book on my own. Easy A + extra credit.
This was the worst lab class I have ever taken. His student aide graded EXTREMELY hard and didn't let up until towards the end of the semester. His quizzes were ridiculous and had the stupidest questions on them that you had no way of memorizing beforehand. I would NOT recommend him for the lab class unless you have no other options. :[
I dont know what he is thinking but 20 quizes + 4 exams.in 16 week class is just not right. You cant miss a class and have to turn in 2 eassys to get extra credit. Think about it before you take him unless you want to be stacked with this stupid class.

lecture consists of irrelevant stories, learning is all reading the book, if prof. reinforcing the material is helpful for you, he's not for you. At least 1 quiz a week w/ no help from lecture, powerpoints usually match story rather than the content! everyday examples: 30 minute story on his audition for a musical, 45 min...day his son was born.
this teacher is amazing! he is very interesting, but if you dont do your work or study you will not do good in his class. I loved taking his lecture and lab class. take it if you actually want to learn and be challenged!
This class is not easy. I have to take it again. I do want people to know, however, that this guy is super legit. He actually makes you learn. The quizzes that take place everyday reinforce the reading. I'm not the type to like a teacher, but i feel like this guy knows whats up. Hes a very successful guy, and funny as well. I recommend him for sure
WORST EXPERIENCE EVER AT OCC
He was really nice to me. Alot of students in my class didn't like him. This lab requires alot of assignments, quizzes, and field trips. Be willing to work hard for your grade. If you miss one class, you will fall behind.
wow i cant even believe people can possibly give him 2 or 3. If there is ever a negative, I think most of the people give him the negatives. He had a full class of 400-500 students. End of the semester, there were only less than 150.
He's a really great teacher if you actually show up, do your homework and TRY. Otherwise he won't take it easy on you. Lots of field trips and papers that boost your grade up if you complete them. Offers TONS of extra credit to help your grade. Class was a lot of fun, and would definitely recommend to someone who is interested in Marine Mammals. :]

Decent teacher. he likes to go off on tangents and wastes class time leaving the notes and powerpoint to suffer. takes up a lot of class time talking about life experiences pertaining to the class. Again, wastes timne alot. talks fast so outline each chapter if you want a good grade. Taking the summer class all quizes online gives you study guides
ok there is a quiz every day, and they are not easy. You have to read the book to do good in his class. He is a really funny teacher, but goes off on radom tangents constantly, dont even pay attention to the powerpoints because they dont help at all. This is not an easy class

I'd never been through a class where each and every day I felt like I hadn't learned a thing. Kelly manages to waste huge amounts of time on tangents that have little to do with the actual class, expect that he uses the word "ocean" in them. You basically have to teach yourself out the the book.

You basically have yo teach yourself from the book and the quizzes are hard so make sure you read the book he is funny and interesting at times and knows what hes talking about but goes off subject alot midterm and test are like the quizzes
awesome teacher, really funny. i did the reading and went to class to earn my B, it's not hard to get an A if you keep up and are truly interested. tests are clear and lectures are fun.
If youre taking this class to learn from the lectures, think again. Definately a teach yourself teacher. He tells stories for a while then forgets why he was telling the story to begin with. humurous at times. but i had to teach myself everything i got out of the class. quizzes are hard, test are from the quizzes and review sheet. this teacher: NOT
I thought this class was amazing. I only took his lab class but it was SO fun. I've lived by the beach my entire life and never knew so much about it. It's not super easy, but if you get the work done correctly its fine. Our TAs were awesome too!
Clear expectations. Responds well to visible student effort and achievement, little patience for slackers.
Prof Kelly is awesome. He's a terrific teacher. If you like stories, he's the teacher for you! Ask about Sea World! His lecture class is hard...READ THE BOOK...but lab is super fun. He's very helpful if you have questions! VISIT HIM during his many "lonely" office hours...he'll love you for it! Ask to see the stinger from the ray!
He gives you a study guide for each test. About 3-4 chapters worth of information on each test. The information from his lectures answers about 2 or 3 questions out of the entire study guide!! Only take the class if you are willing to read the book and teach yourself. He is completely useless in teaching the material. Also has 20 online quizzes
his lectures meander through random unrelated topics that have nothing to do with the test. all quizzes and tests are derived from reading done on your own. attendance is mandatory, because i'm sure its the only way he could get people to stay. my whole table was disgusted. useless, childish, and loves the sound of his own voice. AVOID!
Professor Kelly is absolutely one of my favorite teachers. He is very clear about everything that he wants from you from homework straight down to exams. All exams are taken straight from the quizzes with 2 essay questions which he gives to you before hand! He will even look over prewritten essays and help you with everything as long as you ask.
I couldn't pay attention in his class. He didn't make any sense half of the time. The first day of class he was rude and he said some things that a professor shouldn't say to his students.
20 online quizes, form a study group and bust them out. Way easier this way. His lectures do go off topic alot, but if you visit him during his office hours with a specific question he will answer it thoroughly. You must read the book for this class. The first test is an accumulation of the quizes, the others are completely random.LOTS OF TRICK Q'S
Dennis Kelly is a great teacher and very full of knowledge. He does go off topic, or that's what some students think, but it all ties together eventually and his lectures give you a better understanding of the question at hand in the end. Quizzes and Tests are easy if you study, usually from the text word for word. He wants you to succeed!
He's got some really interesting stories, but if you are taking the class for your general ed then I'd think again. You have to teach yourself most of the material, and the lab was more work than all of my other classes and it was only ONE unit. So if you major in marine science, he's pretty cool. But otherwise i'd say no.
Great professor. Study quizzes they are mainly the whole tests. He does get of topic but he seemd pretty cool.

His class is very easy! The tests are based on the quizzes and his essays are very manageable. He also offers extra credit! Overall, a very easy class!
I don't know why people said that this class is hard or that he is boring. Yes he does tell stories but they are interesting. The quizzes are easy since it is straight out of the book and you take them at home. The test are the same exact questions from quiz.

You have to attend class. Every time you miss 10 points gets marked off of your grade. Other than that this teacher is super easy. He is really funny. If you are interested in the ocean take this class. You wont regret it
HE WAS SOO INTERESTING! ALL OF HIS STORIES I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER! He was my favorite professor. In the lab, the work wasn't hard, but there was just a lot of work. You can tell that he loves what he is teaching, and it made me like marine science a little more.
I took lecture and lab. It is work and there is quite a lot of it. But it absolutely is manageable. I ended the semester feeling accomplished.
Pretty easy class, only problem I have is that he expects us to attend class everyday. For every 1 day you don't attend, 10 points are taken off from your attendance points and class participation is similar. I think it's pretty stupid to expect participation from about 100+ people and that could really hinder borderline ABC grades. So be Aware.
Pretty easy lab. Just don't miss class. Grade relies entirely on showing up to each and every lab.
Amazing class and teacher.
I took this class because I thought it was going to be easy. Unfortunately, it is a lot harder than expected. If your main focus is marine biology and you enjoy it, you will do fine. He has many years of experience in the particular field . He is a hard grader, but offers extra credit. My advice: show up, do the work, and participate.
Loves what he does, fair and knowledgeable with life experience in the field of marine science. Has inspired students to make a difference.
