very determined guy. loves to get the class involved all the time. dont take his class if you dont like to talk, cuz you will if youre in it.
he is a wonderful teacher. he comes off touch but that is to get the dumbass out. If you are shy DO NOT TAKE HIM!!! you will learn a lot from him. I love him!!!!!!!!1
great prof!! and, yes, he tough and that is to get the people who just want to breeze by out of the class -- if you pay attention and talk in class you will do fine -- try not to say anything stupid he will call you on it -- this has been my favorite class at CSULB!!!
Awsome professor.. Gets class involved and interseted. You have to participte and think or you will get nailed. Comes of very tough to get rid of the idiots. By far my favorite class ever taken at CSULB.
At first I was a little scared and intimidated by him. But it turned out his class was my favorite, it was always interesting and never boring. I thought i was going to do horrible but I ended up with a B at the end.
Awesome teacher!!! Not the one to take if you plan on skating thru or not showing up to class. He made me change my minor to mgmt. know your**** outside class or he will steam roll you
He is hard as hell and he discriminates against certain sex and race. You will see it easily w/o me saying much. Other than that, he is okay but his material is really outdated. He thinks he knows it all, but his job history kind of stinks.
Best professor I have ever had. Dr. Laurie is a former Senior Vice President of BP. In fact he was in charge of the merger when BP bought Errikson (the Mobile phone company) Hard work but well worth it. He helps you to incorporate his experience into your talent. Dr. Laurie treats you as a business professional. So you better be ready to act like it.
He is a great teacher, but you must come very prepared for class or he will nail you. However, his class is so interesting and he constantly repeats everything you need to know, therefore making it easier to learn. He comes off tough, but has a funny sense of humor. If you don't like to talk outloud in class then don't take him. I really enjoyed his class though, and you won't fall asleep in this one.
I luv this teacher; by far 1 of my favs. Here's the scope:U can't be shy...if U are, don't take this class-U will NOT do well. I repeat, do NOT take this class if U are shy. However, if you like to talk..he's the man. Not a hard class at all!! Easy A if you participate in class and take good notes. Trust me, take this class if you like to talk only.
All I have to say is, if you aren't gonna talk or participate in this class...DONT TAKE IT because class participation counts 1/2 of the class grade! Overall good teacher, he may seem TOUGH but his tests and requirements are EASY!! If you need CBA 300 in csulb, this is the man
One of the best professors in CSULB. His experience in the business world gives you the real thing and not what's written in textbooks. By the way, he never ask for one. Only way to pass this class is if you participate and take very good notes or you'll get in trouble. WARNING "If you don't say it, you don't know it." You'll know what I mean!
First time I actually meant all the positive things I put in teacher evaluations. Very involved, interesting, and intelligent. He doesn't use the look-at-slides-all-day, read the text/teach-yourselves technique. I wanted to shake his hand on the last day but I didn't want to seem like an ass-kisser.
suck, stupid, does not his promised, unprofessional, and grade very weird.
When Dr. Laurie walked the first day to the classroom, he looked like a sergeant from the ARMY. His class is like a boot camp. You need to be aware of what is going on, and participate. Overall, it was challenging for me since I don't participate a lot. However, I studied, so I got a B.
You must take this professor for CBA300. My first impression of him was "this guy's anal". But as the course moved on, he demonstrated why he did the things he did. He's very smart, intelligent, and knowledgeable person. He will give you the drive to succeed. You need to pay attention and participate and you'll get an A or B. Highly recommended.
Make an effort, be professional and he will reward you!
This professor ROCKS! If you want to learn about the real world or globalization take him. The first day of class he was screaming like a Sergeant and people were all freaked out. Don't take him if you're shy-he'll pick on u. I learned a lot from him, Doesnt go over slides, everything that he talks is about his work experience. Take good notes.
Dr. Laurie wants you to succeed. He has a hard shell with a great heart. He will give you great overview of globalization matters.
HURRY HURRY HURRY.....Define Globalization....Memorize that definition and you should be good for a B..little effort and there is an A...this prof. Rocks...take him and ull know it!
Amazing! Never a dull moment in with this teacher, no matter what he teaches. No book and his exams are oral. Participate and get on his good side. "Interdependent, worldwide, market place for product, services, labor, investments and technology." I took this class two years ago and still remember everything! Doesn't happen often for me. :)
One of my favorite professors! I bombed the first test, then I showed improvement on an easy final and managed to get a B.
This is definitely one of the best classes I've taken. Dr. Laurie's teaching is very effective and he makes you want to learn. His classes are interesting and fun. I never got bored! I though he was intimidating at first, but he's a good guy. Don't miss class and make sure you pay attention. Highly recommended!
HE IS A GREAT PROFESSOR, BUT A DIFFICULT GRADER. HE CHOOSES A ROW AND MAKES THEM SEAT ON THE FIRST ROW AND BEGINS TO ASK YOU QUESTIONS, SO YOU BETTER KNOW YOUR MATERIAL. HIS GRADIND IS BASED ON PARTICIPATION POINTS, A MIDTERM AND THE FINAL. THE MIDTERM IS ORAL AND WRITTEN SO MAKE SURE YOU STUDY AND KNOW THE MATERIAL BECAUSE HE WILL YELL AT YOU!!
great teacher but tough. if you are shy. dont even bother cuz he will rip you apart. you will be required to participate alot to do well. he chooses a front row to pick on every class meeting so be prepared. no book required. midterm=20 final=30 participation=35 ..just be on his good side and make sure he knows who you are to get a decent grade.
No textbook means you must attend class. But why would you want to skip? Fun class, but very intimidating. He looks like Mills Lane. If you don't know your stuff, he'll yell at you. If you're bright, he'll remember you. Grading is opposite: he subtracts from 100% instead of adding from 0%. I learned the most from his class. Take him!
His fast pace and required quick responses keep you on your toes. You are competing with classmates for the participation points. Keep good notes and memorize them, forget about your bookits not needed. So if your looking for a Nite class to sleep thru this is NOT the one.
Great class for future corporate business professionals. If you aren't in this group, you won't like the class. This is not an easy class, so if you want to cruise through it, you'll fail. If you do put effort into this class, you'll do fine.
Hard class, the bigger the class, the lower your grade is. He is biased: he favors good students, picks on deficient students. He grades downward from 100%, not upward from 0%. In order to get an A, you must raise your hand everyday and answer the best answer he's ever heard. No textbook saves $. Take this class for fun, not for grades.
He grades tough. Be prepared to speak in class and fight for "participation points," lots of notes. Read business section everyday along with Wall St. Journal. He gives out great info though, I learned sooo much in that class. If you'r up for a challenge take him. Its worth it.
I wanted to drop the class after the first week. i am glad i didnt because although he was hard you learn alot from him. its important to be on time and participate.
Missed several classes, as long as you pay attention the class is easy. Don't get too worried about participarion. I got no points but still pulled a B. Midterm and Final are fill in answers and a short essay.
People talk about getting on his favorites list to get an A. This may be true but it's not hard to get on his favorites list. You need to be competitive with your classmates, challenge him, and show that you are understanding the material. You can get full participation points just by reciting info that he has already told you. A great teacher!
Dr. Laurie seems very loud, mean, and like he just got out of the military. He expects students to know their stuff and pushes people to stay on their toes. I really enjoyed the class even though he is scary. I would take him again!
this would have been a cool class had it been a smaller group but the class had about 150 students and it was mainly based on participation! you really need to make sure he knows your name by the end of the semester. also the class is all lecture and NO TEXTBOOK so make sure you take good notes.
TAKE THIS GUY! Be on time & go to every class. Take good notes and you are an EASY A! I finished top of my class of 125. If you participate and do your work you will do fine. He keeps you interested and on your toes and makes learning both different and enjoyable. Great teacher you can learn a lot from. Can be intimidating but means well. THE BEST!
he expects his students to know information as if they had already graduated with a business degree. if he asks you something and you didnt know he will make you look stupid infront of everyone.
Best teacher. I have taken him twice and wold love to take his class again. he can be intimidating and overbearing, but that is just because he wants you to succeed. And not just in school but in life and business
BEST teacher i have ever had! I am a senior at CSULB and have learned more in this class than I have in my entire college career. Take this class! You won't regret it!
You will force yourself to try harder and will definitely learn a lot from him but there's really no need for him to yell at students & make them feel stupid. I got an A even though he yelled at me practically every class session. Just be tough & don't let him get to you:)
He will yell and get in your head all year long until you get it. He will make sure you know it and you better know it when finals come around. Questions will be asked rapid fire in the beginnging of class and in teams for the final. You will learn more in this mgmt class than any of the others.
Drill Sargent antics but an amazing teacher. Would take him again in a heartbeat!
HE IS SCARY!!..if youre a shy kid..definitely DO NOT take him..a few case studies. do not buy the book.1 midterm 1 final..in his lecture hall classes..he will save a front row seat for 12 students and he will drill you questions and embarrass you in front of the whole class..unless you like that kind of attention..good luck!!
This class is a joke. The professor represents everything that is wrong with business in todays world. He lectures on random quotes that he thinks are important, we didnt learn anything about mgmt. You have no control over your grade, and all his grades are subjective.
You must go to class. If you're shy, don't take him. MUST be paying attention at all times.
Although he does a good job at drilling material into your brain, I thought that yelling at students and all that arrogance were unnecessary. Try to take him in a small class because in a large class, things can get confusing and you may not get a chance to earn all your participation points. The class is difficult, more than needed.

Dr. Laurie is one of the finest instructors in the Business Department. You will learn alot of quality, useful information about and for your career. It is a love-hate relationship. You will love the class, hate the method, but in the end thank him for all you have learned. And his GA's are a great asset and assistance. TAKE HIM!!
Great professor, but unfair grader.
Do not drop this class! He is the best teacher I ever had, even thought it may not look like in the beginning, you will love this class. I've never been so interested in the business world before like right now. Case studies are realistic and amazingly interesting. Just do your best, and you will be fine! :)
I totaly Agree. Although Dr. L is a great teacher he doesnot grade according to knowldege of student. if he likes a student the student will ends up W/ an A other wise good lack on your grade.
Excellent Professor. One of the best my 4 years at the school. He is intimidating, and hard, keeps students disciplined, which pushes to learn and pay attention. Absolutely great
one of the best professors I have had in college. He is very well educated and is wants his students to succeed. I loved the way taught and made me so interested in the subject that i am now thinking of double majoring in Mgmt. He is strict and expect a lot from you. He believes in the potential of his students and prepares you for the bus. world.
The unfairest Prof ever.
Dr. Laurie is intimidating, but it makes you THINK. I feared sitting in the arena (first 3 rows), but kind of anticipated the challenge he gives you. Out of 100pts scale, every points heavily really count in the end. Midterm & final are based on all lecture notes, so no need for TEXTbook, really. Overall, brilliant teacher!
This teacher is intimidating. He assumes that everyone in the class wants to become a top strategist which is not the case. He has no human value whatsoever and only cares about money. He made us write "1 million dollar" twice in our notebook the first day of class. He humiliated a student because he had his skateboard outside. tyranic
One of the best teachers I ever had!
Great professor. You will learn a lot with him. Class can be stressful if you're not preprared. But all you need to be prepared is show up to class and take good notes.
I have learned the most from this class than any other I have ever taken. The class is difficult but you will absolutely learn a lot. Dr. Laurie will push you to your limit so you can prove to yourself what you are capable of...highly recommended.
This professor was intimidating at first and I was scared. After few weeks I have learned so much and he was the best professor I had so far that motivates his students to really come to class prepared. Its a hard class but if you prepare yourself its good. I got a B
This guy gets his thrills by forcing people to participate in class, if you're shy by any means DO NOT TAKE!Guy obviously has a lot of knowledge and should be lecturing to a bunch of execs and Ph.Ds not undergrads, half whom arent even business majors! lectures can be interesting but puts a lot of points on a few questions on his tests.DO NOT TAKE!
Dr. Laurie is a good teacher. He only intimidates people who are not prepared. You will learn a whole lot in his class. Stay on top of Business news will boost your grade. No textbook needed.
This class was the best class i have taken so far in CSULB! This guy knows what he's doing and although the book is not used at all! He relates a lot of things to the real world! Participation is mandatory not a choice! if your shy and want to come out of the shell this is your chance! I was so shy but he never intimidated me,I was always prepared.
I've learned the most out of his class than I've ever had in any other classes. He knows what he's talking about. Just be prepare to be called on every single class time. It's crucial to not miss a class. Books not needed. Keep an updated brief note. The finals are nerve-racking. No one got lower than a C in my class. Highly recommended.
The best professor at CBA! I have never retained so much information from one class. He relates topics to stories which help students learn and remember lectures. Be ready to participate every day. Just pay attention and know the business world and participating comes easy. DONT buy the book! get to know him and impress him early in the year.
Grade based on 1 oral midterm, 2 sets of briefing notes, MANDATORY participation (certain people each class are randomly chosen to sit in front to be called on; must know right answer),& final(oral&written). Sounds really scary, but BEST class I have EVER taken. READ Wall Street Journal and you will know EVERY answer in the class.DO NOT BUY BOOK!
Best class I've had. If you don't like to participate or show up do not take this class. You have to show up and be prepared for this class, but it is a piece of cake, if you pay attention. Study time= 1/2 hour before class. No book needed. Bring laptop if poss. You will learn and retain everything. A little intense but time flies in this class.
Great Teacher! I was scared at first, but this is the first class I actually showed up to every night. Tests are straight from his lectures and he repeats everything he wants you to know, so take good notes. Don't buy the book. Get to know people to compare notes. I got an A and barely put time into the class except for showing up. Read Wallstreet.
Don't buy book. 1 oral midterm. 1 written final. J/ go to EVERY class and take notes. He repeats Everything that will be on tests 100 times. Get to know him outside of class b/c he is a good reference to have. Favorite teacher! I used everything I learned in his class to write my MBA and GMAT essays! It all sticks with you.
His head looks like an old baseball glove, looks incredibly mean, but he's more bark than bite. His class is VERY intense, come prepared with a laptop so you can look up answers. He expects a lot but you get used to his style. Come to class early so you dont get stuck in the front or edges!
In all honesty, Laurie is probably the best teacher at CSULB. However, his ranking system is bogus. If he doesn't like you, even if you answer good questions, he will never move you up. He only ranks his favs, top 10. That in effect has a direct correlation with your final grade. His valuable teaching is not worth the risk of your grade. Sorry.
Attendance is mandatory. Don't buy the book. Final is oral and extremely difficult if you don't study. Pay attention and take good notes. Seems to play favorites. Bring a laptop if you got one. By far one of the best professors on campus. You will learn a lot.
Best teacher I have ever had. If you want a challenge and want to be successful in life, take his class seriously. Attendance is mandatory. Great preperation for the business world. Show up, take good notes, study your notes, participate and DON'T BE LATE!
Best teacher at CSULB, hands down. If you want a real teacher that will push you to learn and will not make things easy for you, take his class. He completely changed my outlook on learning.
One of the best, if not the best, professors at CSULB. However, he will stress you out during the class sessions. As much as I enjoyed his class, I don't think I would want to take him for any of the core courses. One elective was enough.
He is intimidating at first but do exactly what you are told and participate and you will be fine. You are graded on a curve an ranked so stand out amongst your peers. 3 exams all oral. Map test, shoot out, and the guillotine.
You will love and hate this class. Very sharp teacher with a very unique style of teaching. It's scary at times and the finals are very nerve-racking. However; you will leave with a lot of valuable applicable information. Attendance a must! No textbook. Be prepared to get called on every class multiple times. He does play favorites though and your overall grade is always ambiguous, even approaching finals.
If you just want to pass, find someone else. Take Dr. Laurie if you want to improve & prepare for career success. Class in professional setting w/ corporate culture. Show up every day on time, be prepared, don't chew gum, every day is game day. No textbook. Follow current business news and read. I took 2 classes with him - best courses in CBA.
Dr. Dennis Laurie is hands down the TOP Business professor at CSULB. He is extremely intimidating at first, but if you like a challenge, his class is perfect. Dr. Laurie pushes you to your FULL potential, beyond what even you think you can achieve. I am a better student, business woman, and person after taking his class. TAKE THE CHALLENGE!
By far the most challenging yet most rewarding class i have ever taken. Very intense, high-paced, competitive setting. this class will push you far beyond any othr. Lauri is at times intimidating, but dont give up. Upon completing the course you will be grateful you stayed.nerve-wrecking finals, no book,
Is the most challenging professor you will have at CSULB; He takes no $h1+; bring your A game and he will make in A-player out of you. No written exams; 4 factors make your grade; attendance/participation, "Shootout"(midterm) and "Guillotine"(final), Portfolio. If you want an A or B, this class will consume your life (even outside of class).
Best Professor at CSULB hands down! He is amazing, if you really want to get something out of your classes take him! It is not an easy class by far but you will get relevant, real-world knowledge about the subject and business in general. No book he teaches using case studies and stories drawn from past business successes and failures. Take him!
One of the few professors who actually KNOWS how to teach.. Definitely a challenging class..He is using the Aristotle style which has been the most efficient way so far for me. He is kind of a my-way-or-high-way kind of a guy. However, he speaks out of his experiences, so his way makes a lot of sense. Great professor, take him of you like to learn
I did not like this professor at all. He may be a good teacher but his attitude put me off. To me he was very condescending and rude. But if you're willing to deal with his attitude you'll learn a lot from his class.
Very different from other professors. He doesn't use a textbook but will tell you to read WSJ instead. Attendance is mandatory. If you don't like be called upon don't take him. Tests are oral with a written portion as well. Majority of grade is based on final and he is a little biased. Usually is more lenient with students he likes. Know material.
Best Class in my college career, desperate the grade, the experience you get is worth it. Highly recommend this class for someone who wants to learn real life scenarios. I may have failed on my 1 minute speech, but deep inside the value I received is priceless. Probably one of the greatest professors CSULB has to offer. Thank you Dr. Laurie
Professor Laurie is one of the most challenging teachers i have encountered in my college career. He yells, he will kick you out of class, but you will learn so much from him! He will prep you for the real world! Your boss will not give you a multiple choice test and neither will Dr. Laurie. Take him for real boardroom experience.
Crazy class! He yelled sometimes. He is rule. Yelled sometimes. He asked and u need to answer in one second! exams are oral. Only one writing. If you are shy or English is NOT you FIRST LANGUAGE, do not take him. It was my last semester, so I did not have a choice to take 405.
Without a doubt one of the BEST prof in CBA. Your comfort zone will be gone, but in return he will prepare you extensively for your future in business. His insight and advice should be taken earnestly. NO BS class, must show up and put forth effort. Can't say enough good things, CBA needs more professors that push their students towards excellence.
It's simple: If you want to keep living your mediocre life where you do the bare minimum to get by, don't take Dr. Laurie. If you're willing to actually think and put forth some effort, take Dr. Laurie. He may come off as a hard ass in the beginning, but it's just a ploy to weed out the weak. Dr. Laurie is the best thing to happen to the CBA
The only class in the CBA where you actually learn. No text books no power points just actual teaching. I wish I had him as a freshman. The guy is brilliant. Don''t bring food or skateboards to class. He actually prepares you for the real world.
An amazing professor because he actually cares enough to yell at you. Will bring out the best in students if they have it in them. If you stick through it and take his class seriously, you'll come out knowing more than you've probably learned in two years of taking ordinary courses. Half luck, and half hard work. Impress him in the beginning.
Probably the best professor I've ever had. His lectures blend a bit of philosophy with the real world. Absolutely outstanding lectures. If you are considering taking him and you are not a good public speaker, I suggest you practice somehow.
Take his class, he may seem intimidating at first but that is only to lose the weak students. His lectures stick. Don't cross your arms or bring skateboards to class, he will rip you a new one. Take good notes and listen to everything he says. Amazing teacher, you will be forced out of your comfort zone but he cares about his students.
Graduated CSULB '14. I learned more on my first day than I did in my other management courses. This is why I stayed. The environment can be stressful, because you need to be on top of it. Best course I had taken in my college career. Read the WSJ every day. Read Fortune. Listen to lectures. All oral. No BS. Good challenge. Weak die.
1. Take the class Formula for an A... 1) Subscribe and read WSJ, Fortune, Good to Great, Great by Choice, Battleroom to Boardroom. 2) Take notes on everything he says. 3) Memorize quotes. 4) Connect world events with class subject. 5) Participate in class ASAP. 5) Don't be intimidated, he wants you to learn and you will, if you listen.
Professor Laurie is an amazing lecturer and professor. I learned so much from being in his class, and the class gave me a lot of confidence. The hardest A I have ever worked for. Take good notes and obsess over them.
He's intense. Almost everyone in my class got yelled at at least once. If you're studious, then you'll get praised. He wants you to read the Wall-Street Journal and Fortune everyday. Raise hands quickly and have informed answers. Hard to predict where he is going to go. Take good notes, study them. Really. Study your notes. Oral tests. Final paper.
Dr. Laurie wants the best for everyone in his class and he will make this clear. with that being said you have to be willing to not only give your best but be the best. You'll enter the class scared and leave empowered. He's the best professor in CBA hands down. He will give you the confidence you need to succeed. Listen and participate. BE ON TIME
There's a shootout and guillotine exam on the same day which will be on finals week. No textbook required. You're assigned two books to read. I read Unbroken. This is definitely not a class for people who don't try hard. Not recommended for international students. You will be grilled! Intense class discussion. Take MGMT 405 instead.
Hardest class in my undergraduate career. Only take Laurie if you are willing to put in 10-15 +hrs wkly outside of the class. Requirements: read 2 books, WSJ subscription, mandatory classes. What you will get out of the class: new study skills, pizza study team, sleepless nights but a drive to be the best & become successcareer motivated .
This is a class you need to take before you graduate! He prepares you for the real world. The knowledge he brings to the table helped land me a job at a fortune 500 company. He teaches you how to research, read and keep up to date with Wall Street Journal. Take this class if you want to be ahead and be on the level of Harvard, Stanford, Ivy League.
Took this class two semesters ago and received a D. To this day I believe professor Laurie is one of the best professors At CSULB. Great professor who prepares you for the real world. Highly Recommend him.
First "F" I've ever had. Course grade is broken equally into participation, oral exam #1, oral exam #2, and a 10,500 word essay (roughly 40 pages double spaced). 75% of the grade is calculated in the last 2 weeks of class and 100% of the grade is subjected to his opinion. Get him to like you or your GPA will suffer.
If you like getting yelled at and have experienced life in the Military than this class is for you. He knows what he is talking about but he is MEAN. You have one second to answer or you get an F for the day. Also, don't yawn or cross your arms in his class he will embarrass you and kick you out of class. You are all in my prayers. Good luck.
Long lectures and goes off on tangents GET HIM TO LIKE YOU FROM DAY ONE, GRADE IS COMPLETELY BASED ON HIS OPINION 75% of course is during finals week great course but you WILL get yelled at & he WILL make you feel worthless no textbook, oral exams. only take this is you are full time student with no job & willing to put in a lot of work
You might become a slightly better businessman/woman at the end of this class but expect your GPA to suffer (or retake the course). Even from the start he thought he was tough and funny "Let's see if we can get 15 students to drop" (on the first day) and proceeds to yell and degrade his students. Note: Expect to read some random books & WSJ as req
Intense seminars - be ready to show that you're prepared for class by memorizing lecture notes and staying a step ahead with WSJ articles and Fortune or you will be exposed. ALL lectures and case studies culminate to final oral exam. Tough guy, eye opener, will MAKE you learn or fail you if you didn't try hard enough. Don't forget to have fun.
If you are not good at public speaking do not take this class. It is ORAL EXAMS ONLY which includes the guillotine and the shootout with one major wright project. If you freeze under pressure you will fail. Worse class I have ever taken only because I am horrible at public speaking and the crumble under pressure. I failed this class miserably .
Hands down the most influential teacher I've ever had. Dennis Laurie never has a dull moment which makes every class interesting. His class is very intense you must be prepared by reading class notes, and the Wall Street journal daily. If you want to become a better business person and develop an analytical mind this is the class for you.
Best professor at CSULB. Take him if you want to become a great businessman/woman. He makes sure you learn the material and will yell at you if you are not on top of it. Lectures are intense and people have cried. Just do what he tells you and memorize everything and you should be fine.
Hands UP!!!! COME ON!!! No midget voices! No hockey pucks! are words you will hear often. This class was the most challenging, yet rewarding class I have ever taken. From this class you take with you, hard work, testing your limits, and better and resilient self. Take good notes and review! When you hear hands UP have the answer, pronto!
I can't say enough good things about Dr. Laurie. Great lectures, great business mind. The best business class I have taken. Oral exam final, one paper and class participation are what matter. Do yourself a favor, stick it out, show up and put in the time to succeed. He will prepare you for the business world, and encourages you to be your best.
A REAL Capstone course. Peeps looking to slide through another class like a wall flower wont want any part of what hes serving. If u can handle some confrontation heres ur chance to show ur abilities. Finally got some value out of my tuition with this guy. A glimpse into the mindset of corporate America. Take him and see if ur a lion or a lamb
I'm a 3.8 gpa student and received a C in the class. I'm not here to complain about his style of teaching because it's a little abnormal, but it WORKS. I spent the semester studying and C'd his last 60% of the course grade (you'll understand this later). Overall, I learned so much, I can't even be mad. Time to kick ass at a Fortune 500!! :)
Not nearly as smart or witty as he thinks he is. Constantly trashes csulb and praises schools like Harvard and UCLA, yet he teaches here and not there. Grading is completely inconsistent and based on oral exams which are based on the luck of the topic you draw. You wont actually learn anything, just cliche platitudes he recites a million times
Dr. Laurie is hard core. Not textbooks required, Instead, he stressed reading the World Street Journal everyday. At first, I was terrified by this teaching style. He demands a level of participation and research I never experience before. However, at the end of the class I improved my speaking and knowledge on business. It was a life changing.
This was the most demanding class I have ever taken, and yet I am taking him again this semester. I have never learned so much in a class that was applicable to actual life and the world around me. I put more hours into studying and research for this class than my other 4 courses combined. He is worth it if you actually want to use your brain.
After having graduated for quite some times now, I like to revisit this page every now and then to read students' comments/reviews. This ensures that Doctor Laurie is still teaching. I reminisce on the profound impact he made to my life.
Got A! Grade was based on 1 min elevate pitch, oral quiz, writing project (15 pgs single space) and participation. He yells and can be rude but also very caring. You must memorize what he said during the class and you'll be fine. He wants to hear exact phrase or wording he uses from you. No phone or laptop allowed in the class. Take a good note!
Dr Laurie is one of the toughest professors at Cal State Long Beach. What began as fear quickly turned into respect for this man. He wants everyone to be the best version of themselves and to push themselves. Too be honest i heard stories of Dr Laurie and tried to avoid him. I'm glad during my last semester i was forced to take him to finish.
Was too hard core for me. Aside from the high voice projection he uses it just got me nervous to go to class and I ended up dropping after he said you cant drop the class. Take the class if you have the time to read all the books and wsj he requires. Put in the time.
Remarkable class. I am very glad to have taken this course with Dr Laurie. Other professors at CSULB should take notes from what Dr Laurie does to derive real knowledge-changing results from his students. Most classes are structured to cater to those "participation trophy" type students. Not this class. Real results and real knowledge is here.
Finally, a real business class! Dr Laurie is not for mediocre students. You will get raw unfiltered business lectures, case studies and historical characters If you are serious about business and one day desires to work at a Fortune 500 or purse an MBA. Easy class:no HW or quizes. Oral mid&final, attendnce and final paper is all that is graded.
Best Professor i have ever had hands down. I have never rated a professor before but he had such an impact on my life that i felt it was necessary.
If you're serious about your career, take Dr. Laurie! He has high expectations and challenges you but in the best way possible. His class was the only class I took at CSULB that left me feeling actually prepared for the business world.
I enjoyed Dr. Laurie's lectures so much that I took HRM 446 & MGMT406 with him as well. I am a true vet when it comes to Dr. Laurie and I wish he offered more classes. Sadly the only professor i have learned from.
The best professor! The only class that has me ready for the business world. I took him in the summer term while taking a another class and working 30 hrs a week. My biggest advice is be on top of it, this class is for real business students who are serious. Laurie will make you read two-four books, WSJ, Fortune 500, HBR, and write a 12 pg report.
Just read the entire history of Alexander the Great before the first day of class and you'll be set.
This was the Hardest Class of My undergrad, You must be on top of it, the business world, your assignments, the lectures. Two exams, one 15-page report, several case studies, and Two books WSJ and HBR This class is no Joke, and Prof Laurie will push you! I took This class while taking all My 400 Levels and worked 30 HRS/week You can do it too!!!!
When i first took his class i hated him i failed bc i couldnt conform to how he tests Looking back at it,his lectures are very real world. I can say i learned something from him many of his lectures have sticked to me. Unfortunately, i am retaking the class with a subpar professor. Take his class, put in work, do not take w Nikhmehr youll regret it
If you're looking to learn about Steve Jobs or General Motors and nothing about leadership take this course. Take another professor. He screams at you and will not work with you. Would not recommend. He has no structure and will do whatever he wants. Run
If you're looking to learn about Steve Jobs or General Motors and much about leadership take this course. Take THIS professor. He never screams at you and WILL work with you. Would definitely recommend. He has structure and will do whatever he wants. Run toward him.
This is the best and worst class you'll take at CSULB. His class is graded on participation (25%), final project (25%), and the two final exams (aptly named shootout and guillotine). He will yell at you, he will demean you, and he will teach you. To this day, I can go back and ace his test with no prep. 10/10
"You're no longer a student, you're a young business professional". This is Professor Laurie's philosophy. He will push you harder than any professor you've ever had. If you're here to achieve and learn, this is the professor for you. If you're here to slack off and go unnoticed, this isn't the professor for you. Have loved his course so far.
First day of class he yelled at a student for eating. Were at home online, and this was a 7-9:45 pm class. He forced everyone to have their camera on and if not you will be kicked from the class. He will ask you questions and if you don't know the answer he will embarrass you often. He says it business but shows no respect Take at your own risk!!!
Dr. Laurie asserts that "corruption is the inevitable effect of government intervention in the marketplace." Tells you all you need to know about him - his class is a LOT of propaganda. Should we do away with FDA regulating science and medicine? Maybe we should do away with the FAA in regulating air travel. Or the NIH regulating medical trials?
He made class a hostile place to be (yells, slams desks). Austere personality. Demeaning to students. He expects you to do 10-20 hrs of research per week, and read WSJ every day. Vague lectures/research points. No grading scale in syllabus. Wants all students to work for big corporations and gov't affairs--a lot of propaganda in this class. AVOID!
All these negative reviews about Professor Laurie are from people who have never been yelled at or challenged in their lives. They have never faced confrontation face to face, so when they have someone challenging them or expecting them to know something they think he is out of line and being rude. This professor has been the most helpful at CSULB.
Most of the criticism of Dr. Laurie here is spot on. He will be rude, go on tirades and will call out students who don't meet his standards. With that said, take this class if you want to grow not as a student but as a professional. If you want to do well: think of the bigger picture, take REALLY good notes and be prepared to be put on the spot.
Dr. Laurie is by far one of the best professors I have had at CSULB. Yes, he can be rude at time but he wants the best for his students. He does expect you to go above and beyond on your notes and research out of class which I think is 100% doable. It's an easy A if you pay attention, write good notes, do good research, and participate in class.
His class is a bootcamp. If you can't take being yelled at by your professor run far away. He will yell at you for yawning in class or looking uninterested. He grades soley on accurate word-for-word answers when you participate and if you don't get it right he will deduct points and you'll have negative points for the day. Has a tough personality.
Dr. Laurie prepares you for the corporate world. He connects the past to the present and expects you to conduct weekly meetings with your team and prepare 12 executive summaries due at the end of the semester. Attend class regularly and do not be late. Take-home midterms/final. Received an A for MGMT 300 & expecting an A for MGMT 425.
Please avoid him. He makes the classroom an uncomfortable place for students. He yells at us like we are his children. He will tell you to stop talking mid-sentence. He expects you to read his mind and answer questions exactly how he wants them. if you don't you will be yelled at or looked at with disgust.
The negative reviews are correct. HOWEVER, I grew to respect Dr Laurie. Everything he taught us served me beyond the class. Tough because he cares. Pay attention. Lectures are interesting, but not 100% correct. The idea is what matters. Cut through the yelling and confusing assignments/grading system, you'll see he has our best interest at heart.
He has a strong military & corporate background. His lectures are interesting; however, sometimes you feel like you're being drilled by a sergeant. Do not miss class. Do not miss the take-home assignments for the mid-term or final. Choose your team members wisely; you will submit a group document at end of the semester. Overall, nice and funny guy.
Dr. Laurie was amazing! I learned so much from him. The lectures were next level and force you to be engaging. This is a class that you will get out what you put in. BUT you have to put a lot in. The lectures make you think outside the box and learn more than just business. He was super accommodating to me as an athlete & appreciates hard workers.
Laurie is wise but he's a disrespectful professor. Students deserve some degree of respect in class, yelling & scolding students as if we were children to fulfill his ego should not be tolerated by CSULB's COB. He definitely needs to be audited. Laurie makes classroom an uncomfortable place to be in. Again in summary; egocentric and disrespectful.
Laurie makes class very stressful, the lectures are interesting when he stays in topic. Participation matters a lot, he may test you on things that are not on the study guide and will yell at you as if you were a child. Do not take, easy to pass but not worth it.
Easy Professor. Online one class per week. Research every talking point your given and be prepared to ask or answer questions based on talking points given. Easy to pass if you participate
Love him or hate him type of professor. If you can't take criticism or getting yelled at - just take the other MGMT425 professors that are a death by PowerPoint simulator and avoid the hassle. Most negative perspectives of the professor come from students who were never challenged by a professor or authority figure and it shows.
There is a reason why so many people dislike this professor. I understand that many people believe that his drill instructor method of teaching is good for all, but not everyone can learn by being yelled at. He also struggles with teaching online and cannot figure out basic computer skills. Never uploads grades until the end of the term.
When I enrolled into this course, I was worried at first due to the past reviews. As the semester progressed, this course was not bad at all. Yes, he may seem a bit harsh at times, but you'll be able to get through this course as long as you follow directions. Research the weekly topics, participate in class, and you'll be just fine.
If possible, stay away. I will say he does motivate you to read and study, but his actual teaching methods are terrible. Dennis is not tech-savvy in the least bit. He couldn't install or connect a printer if his life depended on it. His exams are awful and poorly structured. He does want his students to learn but Dennis needs to be more organized.
This professor was amazing. His teaching style is very different but absolutely effective. It really helps shape you for the real world of business. By far my best class that I can remember. Not the easiest at all but definitely the most beneficial. I graduated 12 years ago and still have his impact/I remember a ton of content we covered.
Laurie is truly one of the nicest professors ever. He did everything to help me to succeed in his course with my hearing disability. Yes, he yells at you and makes snarky comments, hes hilarious, and engaging Do NOT take his class if you plan on slacking and cheating your way through it. Participation is mandatory lots of speaking and engagement.
Probably one of the most difficult professors I have taken. He yells at you if you are not paying attention, the lectures are more like history lessons and he expects you to learn everything in the 2 hours he speaks. Yes it is online, but cameras must be on and you must look "presentable". Exams are oral, he only gives 5 sec to answer. Stay away!
Speaking of first amendment, no, it doesn't exist here
Dr. Laurie is tough but wise. Good or bad, his feedback sticks with you and prepares you for the corporate world. Be ready to participate actively in his class, you'll need the points come semester end. Despite initial dislike, his lessons and insights are invaluable. Demanding class, but he was the most impactful professor at CSULB to me.
To be honest, at the beginning I wanted to drop because of how rude he was. I ended up sticking it out and at times would have difficulties w/ him and his hot and cold attitude. After getting faculty affairs involved, his attitude almost disappeared and I ended up liking having him.Bottom line, If you can survive this class, you can brave anything
Dr. Laurie's class is a challenge, but his feedback is invaluable. The material is engaging, though his teaching style can be intense. Utilize resources like unstuckstudy and stay engaged to succeed in this demanding yet rewarding course.
He's unforgettable! Lectures matter and so does attendance. Pretty straight forward and blunt but you can tell he just wants the best for his students. Not much homework but lectures are interesting. Definitely keeps you on your toes, this class is not for the weak!!
Professor Dennis is very simple, go to the lectures, if you don't take good notes make sure to get good notes from someone, and participate. Ended with an A because I really showed up to every lecture and always made sure to utilize my notes, my big suggestion is to utilize your peers for EVERYTHING they are your biggest asset in this course.
The first week of the course,I was yelled at twice and in shock and about to drop the class.I'm glad I stuck it out, because Dr. Laurie changed my life in the upcoming months.I was an unmotivated student who was just getting by, but now I have had 3 consecutive semesters of straight As which I attribute to taking his course. Not an easy A
Professor Laurie is one of the best professors I've had in college. His approach is not for everyone but he genuinely cares. Pay attention, show up to class, collaborate with your group and you will do fine.
terrible terrible terrible professor. save yourself the struggle and avoid this man at all cost. he does not follow any type of textbook or curriculum to accurately teach the course. he discusses nothing about management and more about history that is plain irrelevant to the course. AVOID AT ALL COSTS SAVE YOUR SELF THE STRUGGLE
no presentations, no books, no assigned articles, false information given. no paper/ canvas test, give only 2-3 seconds to answer. unclear instructions. he gets mad easily on little things super unprofessional
Does not teach what the class you signed up for entails. Learned more about history, quotes, how to take good notes, and listening skills rather than "business strategy and policy". Grading criteria is unclear. All lecture material is strictly verbal, and no other resources are provided.
Doesn't use Canvas, 2 weeks left of class and no one knows their grade, absolutely no structure, all verbal exams but so unorganized that people get skipped or he forgets who's already spoken, wastes time ranting about history or scolding students for small things. Upsetting.. this class could be so valuable with better structure and communication
I give him a rating of 2 because his class is very passable. He gives like no homework out at all, all you really need to do to pass the class is to SHOW UP and PARTICIPATE!!!! He gives only oral exams so nothing was on canvas. I will say his exams are extremely unfair and it's a matter of luck for this class. Prepare yourself big time!
Class has nothing to do with business policies he only talks about strategy. His lectures are about whatever he wants, no structure. We had 2 exams back to back before the final presentation. Oral exams give you 5 seconds to respond or 0 credit. He always says that he doesn't yell anymore. Only bright side is its a 50% for a C. Attendance is ez pts
His class just gave me TRAUMA. I'm a straight-A student who takes my education seriously, and I didn't like the way he taught. no slides no materials no canvas??? He yelled at students. It was frustrating and disheartening.
