Not recommended. No connection b/w lecture and tests.
A bit confusing at times to understand what he's talking about.
unknown where the test questions come from
Nice guy but is very unclear, lectures are horrible and dont go with the tests
Nice guy, can't teach. no connection b/w exams and lec. not consistent. NOOOO!
A great person with a challenging/thought provoking class--not for slackers!
fine class--Dennis is fair & knows his stuff. a good grade if you do the work
Hard to understand and follow!!!!!
lectures are repetitive and have little to do with the exams
nice guy, thick accent, read the assigned book(s)
By far the worst prof. I have had. No connection b/w lectures & exams.
Difficult to follow and understand.
His accent is so hard to understand. Don't understand his teaching.
The books are intended to be readible. Lecture involves discussion. He's funny.
the worst prof ever! Can't understand him, full of himself, exam ?'s from space?
can't understand a word he says... tests hard to understand and study for
Nice guy and all but his class can be really pointless.
nice man, hard to understand, don't know where he pulls the test questions from.
Nice guy, but class is kind of redundant. Must read for exams!

super nice, very cute, sexy accent - TALK during the class, he appreciates that!
he is a very nice man!
I got an A, but I loathed every minute. How did he get tenure?

Lectures have nothing to do with exams. If you want to do good read the book!!!
nice guy, but tests can be confusing (you will have to do a group presentation)
Great professor! Learned a lot. Tests are easy if you read the book!
lecture and test have no relation...talks only bout himself..sterotypical..
Good Prof. Read Book. Not conservative!Glad he got tenure!
Nice guy just hard to understand, POINTLESS CLASS, way too many dumb stories
can't understand at all, lectures are not related to subjects, don't take!!!!!!!
lost 10% of final grade b/c missed 3 classes, A- to B-. lectures are worthless
HARD TO UNDERSTAND, STUDY !!!!
tests have nothing to do with lecture
tests are terrible! hard to understand...DON'T GET SICK or you fail...

What a joke! Just because he's not white, he thinks he's always right.
tests have nothing to do with lectures, picks favorites
good teacher, hard to understand, must read
second time taking him and still say he is the best soc prof.
WORST TEACHER EVER...has favorites...very disorganized and hates questions!
What a waste.
He has a strong Puerto Rican accent that is diffucult to understand.
Worst prof at GVSU. Unorganized and his lectures are pointless. Has strict attendance policy b/c everyone would skip without it!!

Hard to understand his English. Has socially constructed views about drug abuse & use, however, he can give you (personal) insight to other countries use and acceptance. Must study for test. Don't miss a class, grade is effected.
Analogy: He is to teaching as putting a sguare peg in around hole (that is also how he writes his test). He can not be understood and does not like anyone elese ideas. Picks his favorites. I have no idea what GVSU was thinking when they hired this guy.
Horrible accent, hard to understand, tests are easy though if you read the text.
don't take his class. very very hard to understand because of accent. tests have nothing to do with lectures. gets off subject a lot. The worst prof I have ever had
You can pass this class just by showing up to the exams, handing in assignments, and doing projects. Lectures have nothing to do with reading material. to pass exam just read the material.Strong accent, and gets way off the topic.
Hard class, but with effort A's are possible. I felt like I learned a lot. He's a nice guy.
Not a good teacher, has favorites and your grade all depends on if he likes you or doesn't like you. Worst teacher I have ever had, will never take him again!!

He's a nice prof--(I pulled an "A-"in class). Try not to ****him off or miss a day (he's extremely severe on that). Read, study & take notes from the book (only) b/c his lectures are irrelevant to the tests. Spend time in his office--you'll be f
This was a stupid class. He doesn't teach it very well and you are absent more than once and he will take 10 points away from your grade each time.
I Love him!!! He is a great professor. I recommend this class even if you aren't a Soc. major. He is very smart and helpful!!
he is a good prof, very smart. people who don't like him are lazy and don't want to study.

Terrible professor... knows his topic, maybe a little too well... but his lectures are very unorganized and he jumps from one topic to the other.. Read the book and you should be okay.
He is a great professor who definitely knows his soc. I would take him again!
Didn't show for the final...
I do not recommend taking him if you have not taken sociology prerequisites. Discussions are in seminar format so you need to read class material.
Extremely hard to understand. Lectures hard to follow. Prof always late for class (outside smoking instead of on time.) Didn't show for final. Exams hard and material tested on taken from who knows where.
HORRIBLE prof. Tries to encourage students to speak up in class but then tells them they're WRONG when they do. Can't understand a thing he says. Lectures are ALL OVER THE PLACE. Must agree with his rediculous opinions to get test Q's right
he has a strong accent that is hard to understand, and it is impossible to take notes cuz he rambles on and on about how the white man will find a way to screw you. good class topic, bad prof.
Hard to understand at first, but really cares about students. Don't take if you know nothing about sociology. Good Prof.
scatterbrained, confusing, cranky at 8 in the morning. do yourself a favor and dont take him
Very difficult to understand, and lectures are confusing. Would not take him again.
Prof. is very passionate about subject, so if you don't like Soc., DON'T take it. Strong accent is difficult to understand ( so sit in front!) Overall the class was good but I was really pleased with the prof, he is one of my favorites!
DONT TAKE HIM he grades hard. cant understand him. gets his test questions from God knows where. I would never take him again
This is one of the prof. that do care about you as a student and was very helpful ever time i needed help this is why I had three class with him.i like his 8am classes way to go dennis keep it up.
Can be difficult to understand. Extremely liberal and baised views. If you don't agree with him, watch out. Nice guy though, and tests weren't really that hard.
Not the easiest prof. Never say what you believe in class unless it completly agrees with what he says. He is gay, so if you are conservative he will try and embarass you.
Extremely liberal, almost communist. But good professor. Do the readings and everyone should do jus fine. He cares about his students.
Enjoyed the class very interesting, this prof really seems interested in seeing his students succeed
If you have to take this class, as I did, SIT IN FRONT! Otherwise you won't be able to understand him and will probably fall asleep (esp. in summer 3 hour lectures). Incredibly confusing class and test questions weren't in the book or in notes (and with his accent, who knows if they were in lecture)
Easy prof if you just go to class. Hard to understand at first but you get used to his accent after a few classes. Very nice and funny. Easy A without studying if you just go to class!!!!!
Horrible professor. Even though I 4.0 the class I didn't learn anything I didn't already know. He seems to BS a lot, contradicts himself often, and is just plain confusing and condescending in class. Is an easy A if you go to class but don't expect to learn ANYTHING.
Dennis is a wonderful professor. He is knowledgeble and personally involved with helping students succeed. If you show effort and interest, any of his classes will be easy for you, and you will learn a lot! Don't believe the nay-sayers :)
Malaret is hard to understand with his accent. Everyone zones out in class. I only read the book before exams. Discussion is basically his own opinion on stuff with no class interaction. Very disorganized.
This prof was one of the worst I've ever had. He played favorites and talked with such a thick accent you wouldn't have guessed he's been in the country for longer than a minute. He also speaks really quietly so you'll have to sit close to hear him. Very boring class lectures.
Excellent class. This prof is a very liberal person, so some of you will disagree with what he says. However, it's all the truth, and this class will open your eyes about some of the problems in this world. All the bad comments on here are prolly from students who just didn't care about the class.
I didn't like him at first but he turned out to be ok. The blathering on about how bad the white man is got a little old but he was funny and tried to make this boring subject interesting. Really passionate about what he's teaching.
Sit up front in his class and be ready to pay attention! He has a thick accent and a soft speaking voice so it's hard to pay attention. Tests get easier as you go. Very nice guy who talks a lot and grades on ingenuity. Attend class, listen up, and read the book before the exam and you should be fine in his class! Have fun!
Focus your study on the book, don't bother writing everything down from the overheads. He will give you review material before the test. The paradigms come up on each test. The tests are easy. Pay attention and make an effort, he appreciates it and notices. He cares about his students and their success. He's very approachable.
Nice guy. He is hard to understand but you get use to it. Tests are kind of hard. You have to go to class he grades on that. Pretty interesting class.
He is a good professor who cares about students and their success. I enjoyed his class. It doesn't take long to get comfortable with his accent so don't let that scare you from taking his classes.
This class sucked! Guy is so hard to understand and flips out if you ask him to repeat stuff. Tests are really hard. Don't even listen to him, just read everything and you will be fine. Make sure your in class all the time! He gives an extra 10 points!
Really had a hard time with this Prof. He has a very bad temper when you hit him in the wrong spot-and is really rude when you bring up an issue you are having.VERY defensive and his tests are crappy. You read AND do the study guides...and still dont do well. Try someone else if you can!

I almost didnt take him because of his reviews. I ended up loving him. Hes so passionate about what he teaches, very easy to get along with and was always funny. You get used to his accent. Class is somewhat easy if you read the book, learn the vocab and study the study guides. I would totally disagree with the other reviews... i loved this guy!
The teacher was very opinionated. Class was very one sided. Tests were easy if you read the book. Took forever to get grades and assignments back.
Talks ALOT. hard grader. take someone else if you can. ok guy, just not the best soc teacher.
Honestly the worst teacher Ive ever had. Just terrible. Unorganized classes, cant understand him, then he gets upset when you ask him to repeat himself. Test questions come from no where. He is just an idiot and a disgrace to the field of teaching.
He is the worst teacher. Teaches us to be open minded but he isn't even open minded. Very rude and not very understanding. Do not take him!!!!!
Malaret is horrible, he is rude to students, thinks he is God. I agree with alot of stuff he has to say but everything he presents is negative. Nothing is presented as a solution just what is wrong with the world. He gets pissed at students when he asks a question and then they answer and he thinks they arn't talking about the ? when they are.
Dont lisyen to all those other comments. Professor is very willing to work with students and easy grader.
Dr. Malaret is an amazing professor. He really cares about his students as people. He expects you to take charge of your own education, which is what college is about.
Once you learn to understand him, he has a way of teaching that covertly conveys the material; but don't expect to get an A without reading the textbook! And if you do say something in class, he'll disagree unless you give a specific reason as to what you're saying; he'll even change his mind. He's helpful, and a good teacher; take him!
I love Denis! Hes a funny guy. Ive never seen the rood temper people are talking about and he is open to questions and doesnt get mad when you ask them. The class is very hard if you dont read the book. BUT I didnt read one page because I found a very helpful website with quizes and it just so happens he used that website for his test questions. :)
I cant even begin to say how unprofessional this Prof. is. Get out while you can
Good guy... knows all of the issues in the world and teaches them all. Talks alot about how bad things are, but never really points out the good in the world. READ for the tests
I'm having a hard time keeping focus in his class because he talks so off topic and even when i studied for the exam i bombed it. the questions were so out there. I would drop it if i could.
Tests are all in the book. Class is pointless but you get extra credit for going. Big group project at the end worth an exam grade. Final was optional. Class was boring but if you read the articles the test was fine. Hard to understand at time and goes off topic allot. Not a hard class but its all reading.
He brings an outsider perspective into the classroom. Very interesting
Dennis is an outstanding person and a great professor. Those who don't learn anything from him simply aren't listening. Lectures and tests are primarily from the book but his lectures drive the point home. He is incredibly thoughtful and sensitive to the needs of his students.
One of the worst professors I have had. Is VERY one-sided and for a SOC class, that does not work real well. He belittles you if you try to counter him on something and never has a single good thing to say about anything! Would drop if possible. Its not worth it!
Worst professor I have ever had! Test questions are over random stats that he expects you to memorize, as well as a broad range of issues that he never really explains. He expects students to automatically know answers. Very rude with group projects; criticized every group because it wasn't perfect. Avoid him at all costs or drop the class!!!
welcome to "the dennis show", where you learn all about his opinions, how everyone sucks except latinos, and tells crazy stories like how he lit a garbage dump on fire and the owner went to jail for it but its okay because he didn't like him anyway. every opinion is wrong except his. don't even try to argue. waste of breath.always off topic. tool.
Malaret is overall not a hard professor. However he is a very opinionated cry baby who will only see things his way. Basically, if you tell him what he wants to hear you will do ok.
Dennis is an alright professor. In order to do good on the tests in this class you actually have to read the book. He is very opinionated in what he teaches.
Prof is rediculous...Lectures consist of pointless personal stories and are irrelevant to the tests. Very opinionated and hard to understand. Test questions do not come from the notes and are absolutely retarded...Easy Prof but not highly reccomended
Fun professor as long as you stay on his good side. His lectures often do not stay on topic, and even spent 10 minutes of lecture time showing slides of his garden and dog. I would have liked to learn more about the topic he was teaching, but I guess reading the book was enough.
The Laziest professor I have seen since at GVSU. Dangerously misinformed considering he is teaching the class. In a class where we are learning about Race Gender and SEXUALITY he literally told the entire class that LGBT HS/college students shouldn't come out of the closet until they are financially free.
Over all great guy, I have taken him twice now and was very satified with his teaching. Exams are fare need to be in class and willing to work with you if you ask. gets off topic at times but still agreat professor.
Great prof. With fantastic hands on knoledge, there is only so much a text can give you; he fill's in the voids with knoledge and color. Thanks for everything Dennis
This man is a nightmare. He is rude, and condescending, and impossible to understand. He doesn't even try to compose emails that one can comprehend. He has ZERO regard for students. I had a scheduled meeting with him that he canceled upon my arrival because he was hungry and wanted to go out to lunch.
Great perspective, engaging conversation, very helpful, warm and friendly. I loved the Race & Ethnic Issues class and as long as you show up to class and have some sociological sense about you, you will enjoy his class. I'm not sure where some of these nasty comments have come from, but my guess would be from those who did poorly.
THIS MAN IS INCONSIDERATE AND RUDE. HE HAS NO RESPECT FOR OTHERS AND A HORRIBLE ATTTUDE PROBLEM FOR NO REASON AT ALL. HE COMPLAINS ABOUT HIS PERSONAL LIFE INSTEAD OF DOING THE JOB WE ARE OVER PAYING HIM TO DO. HE DOES NOT HELP WELL AT ALL. HE ALWAYS SAY JUST GO AND CHECK HIS 16 PAGE SYLLABUS WHICH IS INACCURATE TO WHAT HE SAY AND IS NOT CLEAR ON NT
Alright everybody, I'll tell it how it is. FACT: His syllabus/classroom policies are without question in conflict and borderline hypocritical. He's simply very unclear. It is also true that he goes off on meaningless tangents (far too often). He is not a difficult prof however. Lenient grader with easy EC. Knowledgeable, but unorganized prof.
First off the topics in the class were very interesting. Professor Malaret is simply incomprehensable at sometimes. He has a decently heave Puerto Rican accent and he tends to talk extremely fast. Often 50 out of the 75 minute are spent with him telling us some story that relates to absolutely nothing we are doing. Pretty difficult grader as well.
He's a great guy, although he's extremely unorganized and you literally have zero idea what he's talking about. You just have to read the book in order to do well on exams.
Malaret is not my kind of professor. He would try to get people involved in the class discussion but would always give the floor after long rants that didn't have anything to do with anything, and expect us to pick up where he left off. If you read you should be fine for the exams but don't expect help or clear discussions or directions from him.
Dennis does not keep his word on what will be covered on the exams. He also has a 15 page syllabus which he strictly adheres to and it is filled with nonsense grading material. I recommend taking a different professor because he will give you a grade based on his perception of YOU, not your work
Professor Malaret was a pretty good teacher. He has an interesting perspective because of his background. The class was easy if you read the articles. Final was optional if you did well on the other exams.
He was very confusing, does not stick to what he says will be on the exam. Doesn't give time to ask questions. Can be crabby, which affects grades especially with the presentation. I would suggest picking a different professor
He's a great prof with his interests clearly focused on helping students do well. If you don't show up to class you will fail. Go with the flow and interact during class!
If you enjoy teaching yourself, and not having any class discussion, then this is the course for you. The exams had nothing to do with what was discussed in class. Everything is very scattered and confusing. I do not recommend him. He is also very opinionated and enjoys talking about himself and only himself. He really believes he knows all.
He is ridiculous. Only talks about his opinions- nothing on the exams. The powerpoints are copy and pasted from the only textbook, and I know way too much about his personal life. Things he says are not supported by studies or facts at all. It is over half way through the semester and I still have only one grade in the gradebook- our first exam.
While Dennis is a great person and truly cares about his students, the class is confusing and somewhat difficult. However, he is a prof that really cares about his students. I just wish he put more effort into the powerpoints and lectures.
His lectures and PowerPoints are scattered (how does a picture of his garden have anything to do with drugs?). If you ask him a question, his answer will be "Look on the syllabus". Very opinionated and has a thick Puerto Rican accent that can be tough at times. Get ready to teach yourself the whole class by reading the book!
Prof. is a good and funny man, but does have a heavy accent of the Puerto Rican variety. His main goal is to get you to engage in class, so speak up every once in a while and you should do fine. His papers are easy, his tests easier. Barely used the book. He also is very big on attendance, slightly disorganized, overall a fun class to take.
I did NOT enjoy this class with him. The topic is really interesting but he found a way to make it boring and awful. He is really rude, condescending and thinks he knows everything. His accent makes him really difficult to understand. His lectures had nothing to do with what was on the exams so I would suggest reading the book for everything.
Funny but sort of close minded when it comes to political views and etc.
Funny guy but hard to understand with his accent. For the exams, pay attention to his lectures but also be ready to read every single word in the chapters that are assigned. Two exams and one group project, his group projects are poorly instructed so make sure you know your people. Final exam is optional.
I thought the content was interesting, however he is a terrible professor. He is narcissistic and goes off on long rants about his life instead of talking about the lecture. He doesn't provide notes and shuts off projector. I left class in extremely annoyed everyday. The tests are really hard even after attending class and reading the book.
I would STRONGLY advise you to not take this professor if at all possible. You get used to his accent after a while so that's not really the problem. The problem is that he doesn't teach, he just talks about his past and trys to be inspirational and fails. You will leave class annoyed and frustrated everyday. Just don't take him. It's torture.
Was unclear, accent was a problem, a barrier in communication to the point where it was difficult to discuss exams or ask questions. Literally, and I'm not trying to be mean, never gave a clear answer and left us wondering. That being said, he's passionate and a good guy-- just expects us to be more enlightened than we are able to be at this point.
Would not recommend, unclear, doesn't teach well, rambles on for entire class period, very boring. He is kind of rude when asked a question. I left class each day very annoyed feeling like it was a waste of time.
Would NOT recommend. Talks in circles, rambles, & repeats the same stories over and over again. Talks about the same thing every single class. He is kind of hard to understand if not listened to closely. He gave an exam when he only taught one out of four chapters. Makes group project super stressful & overly detailed. Funny, sassy, & rude.
He gives out two exams and one project the whole semester and offers an optional final. His lectures do not cover everything on the exam, so be prepared to read the text book in order to pass. The group project guidelines are extremely unclear and he didn't offer much help to my group and was rude when we questioned him. I would not recommend him.
Nothing he talks about in lecture is on the exam and attendance is mandatory. You have to read the textbooks in order to do well on the exams. He has a heavy accent and is sometimes hard to understand. The group project and paper guidelines are very unclear on what is expected.
All these reviews are examples of white privilege to me, about Prof. Malaret. The front row is always open if you can't understand his accent, sit closer. Malaret is a great professor, he may not get thru the whole powerpoint, but that's what's the book you bought is for. One of the best courses I've ever had; his courses are almost always full.
Tells you to be close minded while being incredibly bigoted.
Wonderful teacher of sociology. Really is passionate about humanity. Very respectable. Will work with you. Likes you to come to class even though it's not mandatory. Group paper and presentation expected in most of his classes I hear.
Dennis is a pretty good professor. He does ramble a bit during his lectures, but you can tell that he cares about the material and wants to help you understand it. Attendance is optional but you should go to class, because he doesn't post notes or much else on blackboard (he does post study guides). 2-3 exams and a pretty easy group project.
As a sociology minor, Dennis is exactly what I was looking for in a sociology professor. He doesn't sugar coat anything about the world but showcases a respect and caring manner for everyone. He's a heavy lecturer but the information he gives is important and useful. Two tests and one group project, put in your work and you'll get a good grade.
EXTREMELY liberal teaching. only stayed in this class because he pretty much ensured everyone an A. Graphs and statistics are nowhere near accurate and extremely dated.
Sometimes hard to understand but all in all a good prof. Doesn't make you work too hard and is very accessible if you go to office hours.
Horrible. All Malaret does is constantly talk about himself. He takes attendance everyday, and if you skip his lectures his a jerk to you. He get so off topic he never get finished with the chapters before test time. Would highly recommend never taking a class with him.
Inspirational professor who truly cares about the success of all his students. One of the best professor I have had at GV.
Majority of the class is lecture and minimal point opportunities Great professor and person alone, if need help always willing to meet
Dennis is a great guy, but I didnt really like his class as much as I thought I would. The tests have material that wasnt in the lecture & wasnt in the book. He expects you to go in having descent background knowledge of the topics.
This prof is a great prof! He really cares about the material and his students. He's often giving students motivation, extra credit opportunities, and even life advice in the class. He does require attendance, and you need to go to class to get the material needed to pass. Be aware that he can go on tangents. Highly recommend taking!
Dennis was a really caring professor, and I found the class to be relatively easy. He was big on attendance, and if you do not make an effort - he does not care to make an effort to help you. As long as you show up and listen to the lectures, its a great class!
His lectures go off on tangents. The test material is never truly covered and you cannot find a good portion of the answers in the book. He won't return emails. Instead he will joke about student's problems in class with everyone. If you can't make class go ahead and just drop because he's already forgotten about you and your grade will suffer.
Dennis has a very hard accent to understand. I thought I would get used to it over time, but didn't. The only grades we received were exams and a group project. The exams were very hard because of the wording and lack of information we learned.
Offered extra credit then never graded it. Always went off on tangents. Test material is primarily all lecture material, but there are a lot of questions from book that are barely touched on in lecture.
You have to be in class, don't skip for no reason, his class is laid back and if you pay attention in class the text book is barely necessary. Cares very much for his students if you take the time to get to know him, he does get off track easily but the tests are easy, if you do you understand the concepts you can easily get an A in the class.
So basically, if you're a gender studies major or have taken any basic gender studies classes, you'll be a-okay. I didn't touch my textbook for anything other than the final project and I got a 90 one test and 77 on the other. The final exam is optional, and the final project is very writing heavy. Just try to listen to him through his accent.
He is probably one of the worst Profs I have ever had at GVSU, he is constantly going off on tangents and his lectures are basically impossible to follow. Attendance is mandatory and when I met with him after class one day and he was incredibly rude and demeaning. Basically this class is a waste and I have learned nothing.
Very liberal professor, which I guess is expected from a sociology professor but with him it is blatant. In lectures, all he does is rant about how terrible capitalism is and of he isnt doing that he is talking about himself. If you want to do well on exams then read the book because he isnt very good at teaching.
Clear with grading, provide constructive feedback 3 test 4th exam was the final and was optional talks about his chicken and life experience and it all factor into his test I received a C+ but a A is achievable not a hard class he just have a thick accent
This professor seemed okay at first, then as the course went on he started getting off topic and would talk about his personal life and not talk about the information. Theres no homework and barley any extra opportunities. The class is based off of 2 exams and a group project. I wouldnt recommend the class AT ALL if youre not good at test taking
Denny was a really nice guy, not a great prof. He only reads from powerpoints and goes off on tangents. He only has three exams (but you can opt-out of the final if you miss two or fewer classes) and a group project. His blackboard was especially unhelpful. He expects you to read the book for most of the information. Exams were fairly easy though.
He is a genuine guy and talks to his students like they are his friends. Yes, he is a bit hard to understand at first, but I was able to pick up on his accent quickly. The only thing I don't like is how few things we are graded on. Three tests and a final project. However, you can tell he just loves his job and wouldn't trade it for anything.
Professor Malaret is a very nice guy and he is really caring towards his students, and you can really tell that he enjoys his job a lot. But, he just stands up front and rants about things that don't really pertain to the course and it can get really boring. I would just download the powerpoints for class and then take notes out of the book.
Accent did not bother me, I could figure out what he was saying. He is very nice and cares about students. However, I found his class to be VERY unorganized. Blackboard is all over the place, lectures didnt stay on topic and he would say he sent out emails that I have no record of receiving. Its doable but not enjoyable.
Easily one of the worst professors Ive ever had. He was completely inaccessible outside of class & routinely told my class to not ask him questions via email. He never stayed on topic in class & gave tests that were heavy on info he never touched on. My class only had 2 exams & a final project so an A was impossible if you did badly on one thing.
Professor does not have WIFI at his home and does not contact students. Once we went online it took him 2 weeks to assign us an exam and a paper. He did not clarify the due dates and gave us a rubric for the paper that was dated back from 2008. He told us to not email him questions, and if we did we were told "to not tell him how to do his job".
The beginning of the semester was fine. Once we went online due to COVID, things turned for the worst. He doesn't even have wifi at his house. Props to most profs for figuring things out quickly, not Prof Malaret. We got a total of about 3 emails during quarantine and were told not to email him at all because he "gets annoyed by student emails".
Will not answer emails. Does not give rubrics because "you should know what to expect". Clearly states he will give you a 0 on an assignment if he doesn't like it. Based on 2 exams, questions and answers are worded poorly, and one paper, that he never approved anyone's paper proposal for over two months. I'm an A student, couldn't get higher than C
I hated everything about this class.
Hands down the worst professor I have ever had. Attendance was not mandatory and even if it was I wouldn't go. Goes off on random tangents in lecture. Is very vague and reiterates constantly not to email him. Exams are poorly written with many mistakes, and being your only grades besides a research paper, it is very rough. DO NOT TAKE!
Does go on irrelevant tangents during class but you can tell he loves his job. His approach to student emails is pretty negative but if you find him after class he will answer your questions. Overall very nice personality, but totally could put a bit more effort into communicating with students and being transparent on expectations.
Discourages questions. Discourages student emails. Lectures are full of tangents. No assignments, graded purely on poorly constructed exams. Vague on expectations and instructions. Refused to answer many questions in class regarding dates.
A pretty nice guy, but a terrible professor. Would not recommend him at all.
This class is super easy to pass as long as you pay attention to the guidelines he gives you. His lectures are not helpful since he tends to rant a lot. If you're looking for an easy A, this is the class for you. The grade is based on 2 exams + a paper. Show up, take notes, do the reading, submit stuff on time = A.
Super easy class to pass. Lectures are boring and tend to not be very informative. Extra credit is offered only to students who attend the class on a regular basis. The textbook is required to pass. Start the research paper early! He does not offer extentions
This class was not what I expected. Professor is nice, but clearly states he will not respond to emails. Grading criteria are always unclear. It's a good class as long as you contribute and put effort into it. Ask questions in person, not through emails! He is a REALLY tough grader and will give you a 0 if you don't put effort into it.
Prof Malaret is a really great guy who always makes class fun and easygoing. He is very laid back, and his class is pretty chill. He grades pretty easily as long as he can tell you put effort into the assignment. Lectures are lengthy and attendance is required to pass. Extra credit is offered if you have good attendance.
He is a horrible professor. He just talked about his chickens and expected to learn from it. You have to teach yourself from the book or you will not be successful in the class.
WORST professor i have ever had. do NOT recommend taking any class of his. It is graded by two exams and an essay which he does not give any clarification about. the material on the exams is NOT at all what is covered in class, so it's pretty much a guessing game. he tells his students not to email him and gets mad if you ask questions/email him.
Prof Malaret was a very friendly, caring man but a horrible professor. His lectures were boring, hard to follow, and had little relation to the content on the exams. The course was graded on two long and difficult exams. The only reason I went to class was because he promised extra credit for attendance but I haven't seen that in the gradebook yet.
Dennis is very interesting and I find him very entertaining. He is very explicit in what he wants and doesn't like to be emailed. The class is only two online exams which he basically copy and pastes from quizlet...and 5 papers which are time consuming. Overall, I didn't think the class was difficult but I can see how some find it useless.
Professor Malaret was an interesting guy, although the nature of this course could 100% be taught online. The lectures were never on topic or related to the unit and he would just talk about his chickens. The two exams were very easy and taken online, the 5 journals he didnt even grade till finals week, just didnt learn anything.
He was so sweet and very accommodating, attendance is not mandatory but I definitely recommend going to class because it helps you get a better understanding and you get participation credit.
Prof Malaret is a really nice guy, but an awful teacher. He doesn't like being emailed or being seen in office hours. He gets upset when students don't come to class but the lectures are useless, hard to follow, and have little relation to the content of the exams. Promised extra credit never made it to the gradebook.
He is a nice man and trys his best, but comes off as rude often. When none of the males showed up to class he asked ther girls, "where is the future of this country?" This is just one of the examples that stood out. His accent is hard to understand sometimes and I strugle to engage in his long lectures.
Prof. Malaret cares about his students. He does get very upset over missing class and his lectures don't relate to the unit but he has interesting stories sometimes and it gives me time to do homework. He is willing to be super accommodating and give extra credit if you show up and do the work. I never used or read the textbook.
This class is honestly not hard whatsoever. He tells many stories that are unrelated to the topics, but it makes class more interesting. Weekly quizzes and optional discussion boards for extra credit. Three online exams which are not hard at all. Super kind guy that brought snacks to class almost every day.
Malaret gets a bad rep but he is a really nice guy who puts a lot of work into improving his course every year. I personally thought this class was pretty easy since the exams are online and open-note. He does get the wording mixed up on the exams so they won't be perfect, but he does give out many easy extra credit points.
Professor Malaret is an interesting lecturer with a friendly personality, though his classes can be a bit disorganized. The content doesn't always align with the exams, but unstuckstudy was a helpful study tool. Overall, a decent class if you stay engaged.
He is a very good man, but sometimes the things he says are sort of out of pocket. If you ignore that, the class is generally easy. Do not try and use AI on his exams or quizzes, they are always the wrong answer. You will not find the content for these quizzes in class and it does require extra reading, but they are open note.
Professor Malaret is a good guy and seems like he cares a lot about his students, however class became uncomfortable a few times due to a few things he said during our discussions. Overall he seems like he cares, the material is pretty easy as long as you do the reading.
I see many mixed and outright low reviews for Dennis, but I really enjoyed his class. I took the class on drug use and abuse, and found that he was very frank and honest with us considering drug usage, and de-stigmatized it as much as possible. I think his lectures were great. I promise you will pass if you simply form a relationship with him.
Let me start off by saying i am not sure why he is still employed he is rude, picks on students based on race, weight, or personal experiences they have shared with the class. he blames students for his mistakes and says we shouldn't question him because he has a PhD and more, whatever that is supposed to mean, honestly the worst class i have taken
Prof Malaret is one of the kindest professors I have had at Grand Valley. His class is very straight forward and pretty easy as long as you complete the assignments on time. It is an easy A! I would 100% recommend taking him. He is easy to get along with and cares about his students. One of my favorite sociology professors!
He is not a bad person just not a great teacher. He can barely speak english and take weeks to go over one unit. At the end he ended up posting all the powerpoints and we had to go through them by ourselves. He doesnt have access to internet at home and his tests were not even set up correctly on blackboard.
