very good teacher..keeps things interesting and keeps your attention
Great Prof...best I've had yet.

He called me before the final to wish me luck and encourage me because I was on the bubble between an A and a B. Wow! He really cares.
He was very animated and made class interesting. I learned a lot from his organized, methodical way of lecturing. Also, after I got an A in his class, he sent a letter home to me over break congratulating me. I would definitely take another class of his.
Very intelligent and devoted a lot of extra time to helping students, including leading student-organized help sessions
He's really smart!
Great teacher.
I got appendicitis right before the final last year. Minchella called me at my house to say he hoped I was feeling better, and he reweighted my grades and let me skip the final. I will forever consider him one of the best profs on campus.
Great teacher!! Oh, and his wild, curly, scientist hair is awesome :-)
He's so encouraging. The phone call to my house wishing me luck on the final to get over the borderline was so thoughtful and shows he really cares about teaching.
This guy is awesome. He's a good teacher and he's fun. And yeah the hair is cool. :)
Such a great guy! Very understanding and had fun music in lectures!
Awesome teacher! I tested out of Biol 121 with AP Bio but decided to take the class anyways b/c I heard he is such a great teacher...it's true!
Awesome teacher--he uses beer as learning aids!!
Dr. M is very helpful and enthusiastic about teaching. He knows the material, and devotes a lot of time to making sure students understand the course. An excellent teacher!
Great teacher but does he favor the women in class more?
That crazy hair turns me on!
not an easy entry course, but definetly very clear and laid back. dennis is a great guy and is easy to get along with. quite humorous in lecture, his tests arnt easy.
I think he was alright but I didn't like the refernences he made to girls all the time. I thought he was rude also in his help sessions.
everyone likes this guy cause he makes references that the class can relate too. he is disconnected to the "lower end of points" students.
This is comming from a kid who is in his 3rd year here- Minchella is a great prof., much better than the evil man who stands upfront in 122. Biology as a mjor is not really worth the effort you must put forth. Pay carefull attention your soph. year when specializing. Sex that Hair.
He is an awesome guy and really funny. I got to eat lunch with him at Earhart a lot and he knows my NAME!
He knew who I was, by name, despite how many people were in the class.
Friendly, but not my teaching style
I've only been in his class for a grand total of 3 days and i think he is totally awesome
This guy is frickin cool!!

I LOVE MINCHELLA!!! HE ROCKS
tricky tests, laid back.

amazing professor. even though i had learned about the course material during AP biology, he makes the information interesting. easy tests especially if you've already had AP biology. he knows a lot about biology and more. great, fascinating, and clever teacher. i am having a great time with him.
Great prof!!! Tests can be a little tricky, but the class is well taught!! Minchella even holds personal study sessions for small groups.
This professor is one of the more rare types of professor: he'll engage you, humor you, and keep your attention. The material cover is very complicated and his exams/tests are very difficult (unless biology is your thing) but he is willing to help. Also, he curves each test and the whole class as well, which is good for the students.
Minchella is a rarity. Very friendly, funny, and helpful. I loved that he had lunch with his students on thursdays. I knew most the material from AP Bio, but he was an excellent teacher and I enjoyed this course
First, I want to say that I really liked Minchella as a human being. I got a good grade in his class without much effort, and I learned some valuable information that has helped me in other bio courses. However, people act like he is the best professor ever. In that aspect, prepare to be disappointed. Good, but not great, professor.
He is good for a first year first semester professor but he just isn't engaging enough for difficult material. Sure he can be funny, but sometimes that just not enough.
Very friendly guy. If you attend class, TAKE NOTES, and understand the homework, you can easily pull out an A. The only con, which is hardly a con, is that he still writes on a projector which is sometimes illegible. Once again, if serious about BIO, transfer to IU (what I did). *Don't buy the book, never used it.*
funny and interesting, but had weird tests. It was really tough for my first semester, want to take it again .
Very good professor, always has a ton of work and information that can be very difficult, but knows what to teach. Very interested in seeing you learn and understand the material, rather than spit back facts. Very accessible, nice guy, good sense of humor. Has outline for notes if you get lost (he goes fast on info).
Amazing way of getting his ideas to the class. Everybody loves him, no one loves the BIO 195T though!
Awesome professor! Really great lecturer. Plays music prior to class, makes dirty jokes and is fun to listen to. I've learned a lot in his class too.
He makes the class and a very uninteresting subject more fun but his exams are pretty hard. He also records all of his lectures so you can hear them again anytime you'd like online.
He is the man
This guy is awesome! Hes extremely interesting and helpful. The class is tough but he definitely makes up for it.
He is really good teacher and funny. Tests are hard tho. He writes the notes out on an overhead which is really nice. He usually starts class off with a song that has some horrible pun throught out the lecture but its funny. Good teacher.
Goofy but fun.
Very intelligent and clever professor. I wish that the sections were smaller. Very large class - introductory for all bio majors.
Amazing professor. His lecture kept me going as a bio major. its not the easiest class but the way he teaches helped me understand it well. i've heard he's a great guy to keep in contact with too. finally, a bio prof with a sense of HUMOR!!
Great professor! Lectures are interesting and notes are organized. Loved this class.
Very good professor. Tests are not easy, but he's very good about helping you out. He has a very good sense of humor, which is refreshing.
clear statements, impressive teaching! excellent!
he is not all that
Very impressed with his class. He knew exactly what the material was about, and was very helpful. But even better, he made the material interesting! He also makes recordings of his lecture notes, so if you miss something you can go back and listen later. Beware tests though, they can be difficult. Overall one of my favorite teachers.
First of all, he really isn't all that great. The choice of the textbook is a complete joke. My high school uses better AP text book than the one we use.The pace of material is fine, but the pace of him writing note is WAY too fast. You can hardly understand new material when trying to take his notes at the same time. His LON CAPA online hw is hard.
Great professor, great class. Homework is fairly easy. Tests are hard though, study a lot and you will be fine. They are curved, keep up with the reading as much as possible.
Minchella is so awesome! Tests are hard, but it is just because he is trying to weed out the kids who don't actually want to be or don't have what it takes to be Bio majors. He is really cool and cares about his students. If you just pay attention during lecture you should get a B minimum. (he gives pluses and not minuses too!)
Hilarious. Learned tons from just following along and reading.
Professor Minchella is probably one of the best professors you will ever have. The notes that he writes for you to copy are relevant and useful for your homework and the tests. The tests are pretty difficult but not impossible to get an A on.
My absolute favorite prof. If you want to get an A, you have to study, but Minchella is dedicated to helping students understand and his lectures are engaging. Definitely would take his class over again if I could.
Minchella's a really great prof. He knows a lot about biology and his lectures are interesting. His notes are organized. Make sure you go to lecture. His exams are tricky but if you study both the concepts and the examples he used in lecture you should do well.
Very engaging and made Bio fun!
Dr. Minchella's class is really great. He's funny and friendly. Love his class very much!
Great professor!
Minchella is a good professor. I loved his lectures. They were very structured and organized. His tests were mainly off of his notes. His test were fairly hard. You have to pay attention because he tries to trick you a lot. Overall the class was great.
I took his class because his rating on this website is great. After taking his class, I do think he's a great prof, but a little over rated. What people forgot to mention here is that he has terrible & small handwriting so if you sit towards the back of class, you wont be able to take notes. also textbook was useless.
Dr.Minchella is a great professor. His course is less of an intro to bio so much as a smattering of topics he finds interesting-- and the students find these embellishments interesting as well. His tests are not easy, but he is very helpful and getting an A is more than doable if you take advantage of the resources offered to you.
Minchella is super genius and super tough. Period. :D
Dr. Minchella is actually really awkward outside of class to talk to. His class was okay, definitely not all it is cracked up to be. Go to lectures, take notes, study and you'll do fine.
Exams are really hard
Dr. Minchella was easily my favorite teacher freshman year. He was always very prepared and clear during lecture and he knew the material well. If you are even slightly interested in biology, you'll enjoy lecture. But he does make you work for it on the tests. Go to class, take good notes, and study them well and you'll be just fine!
Dr. Minchella lectures in a very lively, interesting way that keeps your attention throughout class. He's also incredibly organized in how he delivers the notes. Tests are almost entirely lecture-based so make sure you go to class. They can be somewhat difficult but he offers numerous help sessions so take advantage of that. Great prof overall.
I had the privilege of being one of. Dr. Minchella's students. His tests were very tough but that motivated me to work even harder. I actually looked forward to his lectures, even though he could be a bit dicey sometimes. I recommend sitting near the front. This course will require a huuuge chunk of your time if you truly want to succeed.
His tests are so hard, study days in advance.
Professor Minchella is a really cool professor, but his tests are very hard. His tests require that you know the information very well. Prof Minchella also makes an effort to get to know each and every student if the student is willing to put in the effort. best professor I've had.
Loved him
The biology dept. is truly lucky to have Dr. Minchella. He inspired me to continue on in the biology major! Concepts of his class are interesting, yet difficult. He makes you WANT to go to class- not many professors do that!
I have a tremendous amount of respect for Dr. Minchella. He is always willing to help students and even holds weekly study sessions in Shreve. I'm always really engaged in the lectures, which are organized REALLY WELL. I wouldn't say the class was unbelievably hard but you need to work for your grade. Definitely my favorite class this semester.
Super funny and nice guy, really knows what he's talking about. The lectures are very useful and he's always willing to help. He goes to lunch at the dining courts once a week and anybody is welcome to join him. Very engaging lecturer. Only problem is his tests are fairly difficult. Do the practice tests and make sure you understand everything.
Dr. Minchella is a wonderful person and his personality really carries over into his teaching. His lectures are very well organized and he always posts extra material to help you understand them on Blackboard. Tests were difficult, but he curves accordingly. You definitely have to work for your grade.
Dr. Minchella is an amazing professor that anyone is lucky to have. Make sure you go to lecture and take useful notes. You can't get by just memorizing everything in this class. Be able to apply your notes to new situations.
This is a freshman class I took as a senior for my minor. If you go to lectures and write down what he writes down you will do all right. He offers partial credit on multiple choice questions which is unheard of. I was 3 points away from the A based on his curve given in class and he gave me the A anyway without even asking. Super fair guy.
I took this class as an elective not realizing how challenging the course would be. Nearly all of the points for the course come from exams (there are only 4 homework assignments per semester). If you want to get a good grade, be sure to go to lecture, listen closely, and take good notes. I suggest reading as well because exams are challenging.
While Dr. Minchella is very well known and loved on campus, he is not a great lecturer. Often his exams were a lot more specific than the material he actually covered. Awkward to have conversations with, but he always remembers you! I took his class over a year ago and he still waves to me on campus.
Make sure to take very close notes and go to lecture/watch it online. As long as you know EVERYTHING in the lecture, you will be fine. Really interesting lectures and very caring professor.
BIOL 121 is a look at biology at large. Dr. Minchella is a great professor and lecture is often hilarious. Be sure to take concise notes because the exams are difficult.
Min-chill-a
Great guy. Great professor. Difficult but worthwile class.
Awesome class. Re-listen to lectures and have lunch with him. He is a really awesome guy!
This introductory course is challenging in a way that equips first-year students with the study strategies they need to succeed in college. Dr. Minchella does an amazing job making the class engaging and his evening help sessions will further reinforce the concepts taught. Biology 121 remains one of my favorite courses I've taken at Purdue!!
Dr. Minchella has really reminded me why I chose this field of study. He is witty and his lectures are funny. Overall, the lecture material is very well laid out and the tests aren't overly hard. He makes you work for the grade though. Put in the work, READ THE BOOK, do the homework, and visit the Biology Resource Room and you'll do fine.
Minchella's lectures are scattered and all over the place. He needs to be more specific with what's going on. He gives practice exams, but don't be fooled! The practice exams are nothing like the actual exams and read the exam carefully, he like word trickery.
Dr. Minchella is an amazing professor! Unfortunately, as of right now, he only teaches one undergraduate class. I would love to take another biology class with him. You will not leave lecture without laughing at least once. If you get the chance, take his Biol 121 class. Beware: it is a very difficult class, especially as a freshman.
Dr. Minchella is a real diamond in the ruff. My mother believes that he is a very attractive man. While this makes me feel uncomfortable, I do notice that his chili pepper is not filled. This is a tragedy. I submit this solely to boost his hotness rating. If you are reading this Dr. M- You are a little spicy to me
Biology 121 isn't your traditional biology class and for that I am grateful. Dr. Minchella is an amazing professor, but he makes you work hard for your grade. This is considered a introductory biology course, but don't consider it as one. The valuable lesson I took away was application based learning is far more valuable than memorization.
Dr. Minchella is a pleasure to have as a professor. He's super engaging and actually passionate to teach his students. I didn't quite enjoy the class all that much. The material seemed scattered and the topics didn't feel cohesive. His exams are notorious for being strange and not what you studied for. He is a great prof but he has his quirks.
Forget the book, never pick it up again. My key to success was to listen to the lectures, take notes, and repeat. This course is not a difficult one at all if you can commit to that.
Great Professor
Forget the book. Listening to Dr. Minchella is the best way to learn. He's a fantastic teacher, and really easy on the eyes. Sometimes I have to rewatch the lectures, because I realized I was just spaced out the whole time staring at him.
Great professor! Focus on his lectures and take very detailed notes. Minchella's notes are very organized and everything that he lectures about is on the exam. I would suggest paying close attention in lecture along with taking notes, but also review some topics in the book, and re-listen to lectures if anything is fuzzy.
He gives a ton of information in a 50 minute period. The best way to learn is to take notes in class, and then go back and rewatch the lectures on Boilercast and rewrite the notes. Study a lot, at least 2 weeks before an exam. Otherwise, he's a super cool dude that loves his subject. He makes loads of jokes & gives real life applications to topics.
The lectures are the important part of his class but he puts them up on BoilerCast. He's a great teacher and is willing to go the extra mile to help his students, but you WILL need to study. Also he genuinely cares about his students and is very approachable.
Dr. Minchella is an amazing man! He really knows what he is talking about and is passionate about what he does! Take advantage of his office hours and time after class to talk to him. The lectures are on BoilerCast, but if you miss the lecture you miss out on important pictures and diagrams that he puts up on the screen.
Minchella is by far my favorite prof. He is a great example of an overqualified professor who can break things down into simple concepts. His stories are hilarious and he knows the subject cry well. Take good notes, they are so important to succeed in this class. He really wants to see his students do well. Take this class if you can, so rewarding.
Dr. Minchella is by far the best professor I've had at Purdue. He explains everything clearly and concisely. Don't worry about the textbook: literally everything is in the lectures and/or the outlines he gives out (I didn't look at those though). Listen to the lectures and make sure you do the hmwk and you'll get an A.
Lectures were very interesting. Dr. Minchella definitely knows what he's talking about and gives many examples in class to make the content more understandable. The course is test heavy and there was only 4 homework assignments. The exams were tricky due to poorly worded questions.
His lectures are very interesting and if you take good notes and pretty much remember everything he talks about in lecture you'll do well on the tests.
Minchella is an amazing lecturer. He makes difficult concepts easy to understand. That being said, there's no guarantee you'll do well in the class. His exams are brutal. Start studying a week in advance and make a study guide for each test and save them for the final. Take the practice exams very seriously. Talk to him if you have ANY questions.
Great dude
I want to literally adopt minchella as my grandpa. he is the sweetest, yet funniest professor out there. his exams are hard as heck but he teaches the material super well. you can tell he loves what he is teaching and his student's success!!!!!!!!
Funniest professor ever and you would definitely enjoy his lectures. However, his exams are brutal and this course is heavily exam based. Study for exams and try to find tons of practice to test your understanding. Even harder than the higher level bio classes I've taken....
This is hands down the hardest class I have ever taken up until this point of my education. With that being said, despite not doing as well as I wanted to, I have learned so much. He is a great professor and makes lectures really interesting and fun to listen to.
Worst Professor I have ever had. Nice man, knowledgable but sporadic at times. Lecture based, never used book. Material is easy but exams will kill you. Even if you know the material he makes the exam crazy hard and there isn't any way of studying so that you would succeed. Grade is based off of total points. GET A STUDY GROUP OR GO TO OFFICE HOURS
Hes hands down my favorite professor. Hes so nice and funny and hes always willing to help. His exams are hard and if you wait until the last minute to study, you probably wont do well. But he teaches the class so well and hell give you some great answers and tips if you ask him for them
Minchella is a great lecturer- he clearly loves and fully understands what he is teaching. He has a passion for the content and knows his way around the course and bio department. His tests are so much harder than the simple level he lectures at. Each exam I thought I knew what I should and walked out the opposite. The curve is huge and that's why.
Dr. Minchella is a great professor, but you definitely need to work hard to do good in his class. A lot of the exam material comes from the lectures, and I also recommend doing the study problems he posts online to ensure you understand the topic, even though these aren't graded. Also, redo homework problems before exams.
Lectures are optional and are posted on boilercast. Tests are difficult, but his grading and curves are a blessing. Textbook is helpful but not required, and is cheap to rent. Minchella is fun, and the class is very interesting for people who enjoy biology but seems to be very difficult and boring to those who do not.
Wouldve gotten an A if I didnt miss 1/4 homework assignments. Tests are insanely hard I wouldve done way worse if it wasnt for AP Bio. Do not waste your time memorizing the small details of the content, focus on studying how the tests are written and practicing the test questions.
Although Minchella is overall a great guy and an even better professor, I would not recommend this class unless you HAVE to take it for your major. The lectures are fun but long and the tests are pretty difficult. I took this class as a science elective as a management major which was not a good idea. STUDY AND GO TO TA HOURS OR TALK TO MINCHELLA!!
Dont go to this class. Dennis talks too fast for notes so just watch the boilercast his tests suck but take extensive notes on boilercast and youll be fine. Also dont talk to him hes disrespectful. This class sucks because its a 2 credit class that takes up the same amount of time as a 5 credit class if you want an A. Also dont buy the book
Dennis Minchella is a great professor! He grades fairly and his tests are difficult but the content is always discussed during lectures. Rewatch the lectures on boiler cast and its easy to do well.
Dr. Minchella is by far the most thoughtful professor I have ever had.
Minchella offers many opportunites outside of class to meet with him and ask questions, related to the course or not. Very genuine man and always cracks jokes in class :). Lectures are recorded, but you NEED to go to class in order to get a decent grade. Lectures are set up in an odd way, but you need to study as the tests are application based.
I really think this is the best professor I had so far. The class is hard, but interesting. He understand students perspectives and keeps the class alive and eventful. Exams are incredibility hard, but there plenty of opportunities to ask for help. It is not a terrible class, but a lot of work. He makes it worth it. A great professor!!!
Dr. Minchella is a great lecturer and a really personable guy. He doesn't write down many notes, but the lectures are on Boilercast so watch those and take note of the things he says. Do the practice exams to get a feel for his style, because they are quite different. He's always willing to help, and he really cares about his students.
I was not impressed. His exams are nit-picky and difficult, you can spend hours studying and still find yourself overwhelmed on exams. He's been teaching the course since the 90's and has no interest in adapting the course. He puts most of the work on his TA's. Go to lectures and office hours. Review sooner rather than later. Do the practice exams.
took this class online during corona. dont think the prof sent an email or spoke to his students once. the classes only grades were 4 homeworks, 10 quizzes, and 4 exams. all quizzes are only 4 questions long and very difficult to complete. tests are hard also and required through studying and even then they are frustrating.
I would not recommend Dr. Minchella to anyone. Class was online because of COVID, and all his work went to his TAs. Lectures were recorded from 2 years ago, and they often don't provide enough information to answer the questions he asks on tests and quizzes (which are difficult). Likable man but a bad teacher. Prepare for lots of hard work.
Minchella was a wonderful professor. Because of COVID, all of the lectures were prerecorded (from last year) which sucked. I had wished they were newer or synchronous. Overall, Dennis is such a smart dude. The class is hard but really pay attention during lecture, review your notes, and you'll do fine!
i genuinely liked dr. minchella- the material is tricky and a little boring and he always made it more fun to learn about because he cracks a lot of jokes. the class is difficult, be sure to read when you need extra clarification, do practice exams, and watch/rewatch lectures. very application based, so be sure to do a lot of practice problems!!
Lectures are very long, and they contribute to a big portion on the exams. The exams are extremely hard. I failed almost all of them, even after studying for 10+ hours. However, Minchella is a great guy and his lectures are never boring and easy to pay attention to. There isnt a lot of things you can do to boost your grade. All dependent on him.
Dr. M was by far one the funniest professors I've ever had in my entire academic career. He makes sure his students pay attention during his lectures by making them funny. However, this biology class was one of the hardest classes I've ever taken, despite it being 2 credits. Be prepared for hard exams, but there are massive curves towards the end.
Take good notes and write the things he DOESNT write but says. Make sure you can look back at your notes and understand what you wrote. The exams aren't too bad. He has funny lectures, but the lectures last really long. He does fun demonstrations in class too which helps. Overall, not bad but not the easiest. Having AP Bio background WILL HELP!!
Go to lecture and write down everything he says, study everything he gives you because theres a good chance it will show up on an exam.
I recommend taking his class! He cares about his students and makes lectures funny. The tests take a little to get used to, but you'll adjust.
Absolute legend. Best lectures. Tests are ridiculously hard and your grade really depends on them but I did well on them so it didnt matter that I never did the homework lol.
Dr. Minchella is super funny and makes boring material pretty fun. The class is a pain in the a** and you will need to work for your grade. Go to lecture and write everything down. Devote time to studying before every test and the first test is definitely the hardest. It is very test heavy and your grade depends on it. Grade is hard to calculate
Dr. Minchy held great lectures and was exceptionally clear. Taking quality notes is essential for you success in this course, so get good at note taking in his fast paced lec hall. The exams are heavily based on lecture material. My study strategies included re-watching old lectures and rereading my hand written notes. Schistosomiasis <3
Dr. Minchella is the most caring and fun lecturer I've had so far. He is very passionate about the material he lectures on and always finds a way to present the material with a fun twist. I made a playlist of the songs he played at the start of each class. Ascaris were my favorite Dr. Minchy <3
MINCHELLA IS THE BEST!! He has been in the business for a long time and knows how to keep his lectures interesting! The exams are moderately difficult, but if you study enough you will pass the class. Homeworks and quizzes are also not bad.
Dr. M always made it so easy to stay engaged in class. Exams are very lecture-based, so you'll be fine if you study your lecture notes and pay attention in class. Exams can be tricky but tend to have a curve. Difficult to know what grade you have at any point, but he does grade check-ins every so often. Very nice guy, good music too.
Minchella's lectures were entertaining and informative. watching lectures (and studying them) is the only thing needed to get a good grade. Everything on the test is covered in class, that being said the exams are rough. Minchy has very generous curves. He isn't that warm of a person one on one, but you probably wont need to talk to him.
i love dennis. he is the best. curve is nice but don't rely on it
BIO 121 is a pretty heavy workload for an introductory 2-credit biology class. The exams are hard but only come from his lectures (textbook not needed) and emphasize concepts (not rote memorization). Thoroughly study any practice exams that he gives out. He is a nice professor and made time to eat with students in the dining court pre-pandemic.
Minchella is a good professor who keeps his lectures entertaining, however this class is the hardest one I've taken at Purdue. For only 2 credits, it is so much intensive work, grades are composed of very few things, making it very hard to recover from a bad grade. I wouldn't take this class unless it was required, which it was for me.
Dr. Minchella is a hilarious professor. If you don't attend lectures, you will struggle to do well in this class, but lectures can be attended online live.
Dr. Minchella is one of the most amazing professors I have ever had. This probably the hardest class I have ever taken, and somehow I don't hate it. I feel like I have learned more in this one semester than I did the entirety of my high school career. An absolutely amazing intro to the world of biology!
Dr. Minchella really understands the course material he teaches, but to do well in the class, you kind of have to go above and beyond the lecture material. You'll need to go to office hours, read the material articles, and read the textbook. The exams are also pretty difficult but his curve is really helpful.
The class is a great one, the only downside is that the grade is very exam heavy. I highly recommend going to the lecture and writing everything down and some more. The exams are difficult but he does curve them. I highly recommend rewatching the lecture videos while following your notes to prepare for exams.
BIO 121 is an exam heavy class, a couple homework assignments and weekly quizzes throughout the semester. To do well in this class attend office hours, rewatch lectures, and study notes on a daily basis. Pay attention to the little details in class as they may pop up on exams.
Good lecturer, but the class itself is extremely difficult. Attend all lectures; he likes to take very specific concepts from lecture and put them on exams. Textbook is not necessary to pass the course. Rewatch lectures and write down everything he says. Curves at the end of the course were very helpful.
Dr. Minchella works hard to make lectures entertaining and to provide resources for his students. I highly recommend attending lunches with him on Thursdays and going to the Biology Resource Room when you have questions. READ THE TEXTBOOK AND ARTICLES
The textbook is listed in the syllabus, but not required to do well. Lectures are not "required" but you will not pass if you don't attend. There are weekly online quizzes but are usually not too hard. Tests are very difficult but have a generous curve. Class is not bad, but is more work than would be expected from a 2 credit class.
He is a great lecturer, he tries to make his lecture funny. I will say the exams were harder than expected, he uses specific examples so you have to know lectures inside and out. There were only four homeworks but quizzes online every friday that tended to be a little hard. Seemed to feel more like stats than bio at times.
Dr. Minchella is a great guy who's passionate about what he does, and you can feel that in lecture. He's been in the business for a while, so he knows what he's talking about. The exams are pretty difficult, but he curves! Pro tip- don't let your grade on the first test get you down!
Really good teaching, good examples. Pretty difficult class if you don't take the time out of each day to study for this class
Dr. Minchella is an amazing lecture. The tests are hard, but there is a big curve. He keeps you interested and knows a ton about the topic. Make sure to take great notes and basically memorize lectures. I would definitely recommend him. This class is a lot easier if you have a solid background in biology (like if you have taken AP bio)
Minchella's lectures are the most important thing for doing well in this class. Taking notes on what he writes and what he says is important for the tests and open-note quizzes. Make sure to study his lectures and practice exams because he expects a depth of knowledge on specific studies and examples from class. His question wording can be tricky.
Dr. Minchella is a great man and professor, make sure you talk to him as he may be the sweetest guy ever. Besides that his class was enjoyable and interesting although the tests were hard it was all worth it in the end. Take his class if you can but it is a "weed out" class for bio students so be prepared for it to be difficult. You got this!
Great lecturer. Funny and knew the material well. He'll say to get the textbook, but you don't really need it. It's not required, but can be helpful if you didn't understand the lecture. He also assigns a couple articles to read for each exam, but there was only 1 or 2 questions over them so you can get by not reading any of the assigned readings.
Very focused on small details. Best way to prepare for exams are take the old one he gives you and sit down with friends and figure out how else he could ask the same thing, questions he could ask for the wrong answers, and other examples that are applicable. He was a great lecturer but his exams were rough.
I really enjoyed Dr Minchellas lectures, he made them really engaging. His exams were really tough despite being multiple choice, but he gives a generous curve that helps a lot
Minchella does a great job of keeping lectures entertaining and informative. Just make sure to be detailed in your notes and seek help when you need it.
Great professor! He seems to really care about students and the exam/quiz material is always covered on the lectures.
He is a great professor and great guy! He really takes the time to get to know students which is rare. Even though the class is challenging, he has clear expectations and is very available for help.
Hard professor. Old school. Definitely uses test banks. Good luck because you have no other option for 121!
Not a lot of structure. He writes his notes as he goes during lecture. Kind of just throws info at you and you have to figure out what to do with it. Tests very hard compared to info given.
Clearly cares about students and a great guy. Lectures mostly consist of writing notes along with him. Definitely covers all material that appears on tests. Homework can be tricky but not much of it. Loved the songs!
Dr. Minchella is an amazing guy. Funny, chill, and a great lecturer. Exams are tough, but fair. Exam 1 will have a massive curve (my 60 curved to an A lol) and then the next 3 won't be quite as difficult, so be ready for exam 1. Overall a great guy and a great class.
Dr. Minchella is a great professor. You can tell when he lectures he is passionate about what he does. He also is very considerate and cares about the students as well (He even brought us candy once). Tests are VERY VERY difficult but have a substantial curve. Lectures are recorded and can be watched on Brightspace. Challenging class but fun.
The lecture consists of him writing his trail of though( in theory these would be notes), very quickly, so you have to be a fast typer to write them down. Additionally, he does not have and powerpoints/slides for you to go over after class nor uses a textbook.
Prof Minchella makes the material engaging and accessible. While exams can be tough, the curves make it manageable. Lectures are worth attending, and Unstuck AI is a great study aid alongside the textbook.
love this guy with my whole soul.
Dr. Michella does a great job of making lectures interesting! I had a hard time keeping up taking notes with in-person lectures, so I would watch them online instead so I could pause to take notes. Use the practice exams and suggested questions from each lecture to study for the exams, and there is always a good exam curve.
I love Dr. Minchella. Be sure to attend class, read the articles and textbook, and you'll be fine. His office hours are very helpful if you need extra explanations for certain topics. He breaks it down in a way that made sense to me. Overall loved this class and made me more sure of my major in biology.
Great professor in general with a caring attitude.
Dr Minchella is the funniest man to ever step foot on purdue's campus. he clears neil armstrong easy. he will be missed
Minchella is an amazing professor, his notes are very clear and concise, he is a very funny guy so all his lectures are interesting. Tests might be tricky but as long as you pay attention in lecture you'll be fine.
Hard class but Minchella is an amazing teacher!
Amazing Professor! Class may be hard, but if you work hard you will succeed. He does everything to make sure you are prepared but his tests are hard and not based on memorization but application.
Dr. Minchella was by far my favorite professor. He is incredibly witty and knows how to effortlessly get the class's attention. His lectures are efficient, easy to follow, and thorough in preparing students for exams. There will never be another professor as incredible as him!
