You'll learn a lot in this class. Lectures are interesting with detailed slides. Though the subject matter can be difficult, he gives a lot of opportunity to get a good grade. Assignments are similar to tests and you usually get a study guide so if you put in the effort you'll be fine.
His class requires a lot of work but I learned a lot. I would suggest not missing class and go to his office hours. He's willing to help anyone who shows that they are willing to learn.
The dude is hard, like, really really hard. In the beginning, I thought that I might get a C if I'm LUCKY. However, I learned more in this class than any other class. Went to his office hours probably every week. He is a huge help. DO NOT MEMORIZE, try to really understand... if you do not understand ASK QUESTIONS! be prepared to work your ass off
Don't take him if you want an easy A. You will have to work for your grade but he is very straightforward during lectures and a fair professor. Go to his office hours! He genuinely wants you to succeed in the class and will really help you if you ask for it. 5 problem sets (25-30 MC and a few short answer/graphs), 2 tests, 1 cumulative final.
Dennis Plott is a GREAT professor, but he is EXTREMELY hard! You really have to put a lot of effort in the class because he tries to make you understand the material. Go to his office hours if you have any doubts, he is accessible and willing to help. There are 5 problem sets, 3 tests and 1 cumulative final. Extra credit in exams and helpful curves
Professor Plott is extremely fair, but also a hard professor. YOU WILL GET WHAT YOU DESERVE. If you slack and don't show up to class you will not get a good grade. However, if you go to class and put in effort an A is possible. 5 problem sets, 3 exams, one cumulative final. He is always willing to help students and gives some extra credit n curves.
One of the hardest classes at Loyola one can ever take, Great professor, but hard class. I was expecting a breeze but ended up with one of the worst grades I've ever received. It's the graphs man.
Take this class if you are willing to learn about Econ. Dennis Plott will actually teach you the material unlike the rest of the Econ professors. He genuinely wants you to learn but you have to work for it as well. The tests are somewhat difficult but he curves them a lot so you get points back. There are also a lot of study guide material to help
Very difficult class, but you will learn ECON as long as you show up and take notes. He's very passionate about ECON and everything you learn will be applicable in your everyday life. If you take this class, you won't regret it. He's very scary in the beginning and uses that to thin out the class, don't be worried, he's worth it in the end.
Dr. Dennis Plott is a very unique professor, if you take his class you will be learning a lot of economics. Each class is lecture based, but he's interactive & pretty funny as the semester goes on. He is always willing to help, the amount of office hours in insane, he's always available for his students. Would highly recommend!
Dr. Dennis Plott is a very knowledgable fellow. However, the first day of class was one of the most frightening syllabi week classes I've experienced. His unfriendly demeanor made it seem as if he was unapproachable when having questions. Overall, his class was very informative, and you can tell he's a great professor, but a hard class.
Great professor, just a very hard class, get ready to put in the work, however it was definitely worth taking him.
Honestly, I should've dropped this class on the first day. Professor Plott gets mad very easily and makes you feel dumb for asking questions on concepts he has already gone over. He also writes his own tests so they are extremely confusing and tricky. The class is actually interesting but it's impossible to get an A.
Great professor, really hard though, you just have to work for your grade. Any negative reviews are from people who didn't work for it. He tells you day 1 that it will be hard. Just show up, get help, and you'll be fine!
Really funny guy, he loves ECON, like you will eat, sleep, & breathe it after it's all over. You have to work for grade, he doesn't just hand them out. Intimidating at first, but really wants you to succeed, highly recommend and will definitely take again.
His class is definitely harder than your typical class, however he is the best professor in the Department. Most ECON prof. are not very good, and don't know how to communicate points to their students, Dr. Plott does a fantastic job of this, and if you don't understand, he has around 10 office hours a week, 2x as any other professor I've ever had.
prof. plott was cool, you are working for your grade so don't take if you ain't gonna work at all. He is willing to help you, has lots of office hours. funny guy once people who don't work for their grades drop. definitely recommend though
Definitely a class where you have to work for your grade, but Dr. Plott is the best professor at Loyola. Im a junior & without a doubt the BEST PROFESSOR EVER! He doesnt teach a lot of classes, but try to take him, you wont regret it.
Great but difficult prof. Tells you from the first day that the class will be hard, but you'll learn a ton. Generous with adjusting scores when questions score low. Loves what he teaches and applies concepts to the real world to keep otherwise dry material interesting. Explains the concepts well, so the textbook is only necessary for clarification.
Very interesting professor, but he definitely knows his stuff, take him if you get the chance, really cares about his job
Professor Plott is the best professor I have had a Loyola. He is intimidating at first, but go to his office hours and get to know him. He is very accessible and if you show you care he is willing to help for as long has you need. Has the most office hours of any professor I have had and they are extremely helpful when trying to learn the material.
I usually left this class feeling very frustrated as overall economics principles are quite tricky. Your grade depends on 4 practice sets and 3 exams. YOU WILL GET THE GRADE YOU DESERVE. Yes, he can come off unapproachable but if you are struggling he has office hours where he will help you. I walked out of this class actually knowing Econ.
Professor Plott might be the smartest professor I have ever had! He is a really cool young guy who wants his students to succeed. His class is not easy, you need to work for your grade. I learned a ton in his class and would take him again.
You will learn so much in his class-If you are looking for an A you will probably have to be a genius in economics. He makes the class so most end with a B- or C+. He does curve tests quite a bit which is nice. He's a very smart man and knows what he is talking about. Good Professor, but difficult. Get ready to work for your grade.
Dennis can be slightly intense but to his credit, he does this to be honest about the nature of his course. He'll tell you right from the beginning, this class is not easy. But it is fair, and it is worthwhile. If you are committed, ready to work hard for your grade, and want to learn, take this class. Good sense of humor, appreciate this man!!
After reading the reviews on professor Plott I was very nervous to take his course, but I am so glad I did. His class is not easy by any means, but he does hold office hours, which I highly recommend taking full advantage of. The class consists of three tests and a final along with weekly problem sets. He is very knowledgeable, I highly recommend.
You don't just put in effort and get a good grade. You have to do so much extra work beyond an A effort. Professor can be nice, but comes across as condescending, and doesn't seem to take an interest in us. So I do not ask questions anymore. I find videos online. Prof. doesn't give real world examples often, and he is excruciatingly boring.
Professor Plott is very good at explaining topics that may be uninteresting to many. He makes sure we understand the topics both in theory and in application. He truly cares about you and your education. He provides plenty of opportunities to ask questions and get involved in class. Office hours are essential for this course and are extremely good.
Prof. Plott at first will come off harsh & intimidating, but will grow on you. He is funny and cares if you approach him. He makes the boring lectures a bit more enjoyable to understand. Truly he is passionate about economics. As all people, he has his faults. (He talks fast). Grade book consists of homework, quizzes, forums and final.
You'll have a love-hate relationship with this man. Hard class, but not impossible if you apply yourself. He is super knowledgeable & can be intimidating, but I learned A LOT. More forums more points. I often zoned out in my 2 hr lectures, but reviewing the slides made up for it. Watch MRU videos and take adv of the TAs. You'll be fine!
Dennis wasn't that bad, but he moves through the material extremely fast. Despite the class being very hard, he's always willing to help if you reach out. You will need to work hard for your grade, so this is not an easy A class. He is super generous with grading and will often curve the grade to give you extra points. Solid professor, hard class.
No matter what I did the class made no sense. I did an insane amount of extra work & nothing helped. The exams are complex to the point when you feel confident about your answers but then receive a -27% on the exam. An intro econ course shouldn't be this tough, and a prof should not make students feel stupid for asking questions.
The first day of this professor's class consisted of him bragging about his horrible reviews on rate my professor and that was only the first red flag of his entire class. He makes students feel dumb when they try and give an answer and there's not a lot of assignments so if you fail one it brings grades down a lot. Don't take him!!!
Avoid at all costs. This professor is just going through material quickly, seems to dislike receiving questions, and does not seem to care about his students.
Dr. Plott is a great professor who is quite talented. The class moves at a good pace and he really wants you to understand everything you learn. Make sure you are willing to work for your grade.
Condescending professor that does not actually care about students. Speeds through everything and creates an uncomfortable class environment. Avoid.
I never thought I could feel genuinely stupid in an introductory class. I did everything and more to prepare for exams and group projects, but nothing was enough to get the grade I wanted. His tests are so difficult. You think you know the answer then you end up getting everything wrong even though what you said applies to a theory and makes sense.
This class was an intro class that was mandatory for my major, and it was unnecessarily difficult . The first day of class he mocked his bad rate my professor reviews and that was only the start of a bad semester. People seem scared to even participate in class because he can be condescending and scary to talk to. Class is uncomfortable. Avoid.
Gives no feedback whatsoever and it seems like even with smaller assignments you can never receive an A. Don't take.
his grading system makes getting an A nearly impossible even on small assignments. he seems to be proud of how tough and condescending he is. this class will kill your GPA and your motivation. 100% take a different prof
Professor Plott addressed his Rate My Prof. scores on day one of class, and a few found it to be condescending. I saw it as an attempt to comfort the class & address the elephant in the room. It is not an easy course, but it is very interesting. Take him! I switched to an Economics major because of his teaching style and real-world applications.
Professor Plott is a great professor, but this class does require effort. It won't be an easy A but he gives lots of opportunities to improve your grade and is very willing to help.
I don't really understand the comments saying he makes you feel stupid for asking questions, because I didn't get that impression from him at all. Econ can be intimidating, but professor plott made it less so and had a sense of humor. he was very open to questions. the exams were hard, but he gave many opportunities for help and he helped our grade
Really good prof, although you have to work for your grade and study a whole lot. Good lectures and real-world applications are useful for learning the concepts well. Tests are HARD, so you NEED to REALLY STUDY. He cares about his students and is open to questions. Use your resources, ask questions, go to office hours/TAs. Helps you out with grades
like many others said, this class is hard to get an A in but definitely not impossible. he is very intelligent and his lectures are fun and interesting even when the topics can drag. i was intimidated at first but quickly grew to enjoy the class environment. he helps your grade is very fair with his students.
Awesome professor and super knowledgeable about his subject. He does move a little fast, but he is happy to slow down to answer any questions students have.
If you attend the lectures, do the work and review, you will do decent. His tests are quite hard but they are open book and gave us many opportunities to do well on them.
He is honest and clear with his expectations. The lectures were interesting for the most part and had an interactive environment. He is also fair and considerate and will help students out where he can.
Professor plott genuinely cares for his students and wants you to succeed. the exams are hard and you may have to spend extra time with the readings and slides to understand the content, but he is willing to help his students if he sees that you are putting in the effort. he makes class fun and interesting and is open to questions.
I don't see why Prof. Plott is getting such poor reviews. While his class is difficult, he is transparent with the workload as well as the difficulty of the material. Because of the complexity of said workload, going to his office hours (or the TAs) are a must. Finally, take great care to do the homework well - don't underestimate the complexity.
Dennis Plott is incredibly knowledgeable on the topic of economics, if you are an econ major he is a must. People have mixed reviews about him because he pushes you to be better and some people see that as him being unnecessarily hard/unforgiving. Although if you use the PowerPoint slides and go to office hours you will get an A, but you must work.
A lot of people seemed to be scared of Professor Plott but I enjoyed his class. Very sarcastic sense of humor and tries his best to help your grade out later in the semester. He has high expectations with students but its to be expected in a college level course. You will have to work hard for an A but you will learn a lot in the process.
Dr. Plott is absolutely insane. He thrives on that fact. He is probably reading this review right now and smirking. His class makes the most basic concepts of econ feel like unsolvable riddles, for the sake of pushing you further mentally. This may be worthwhile if you are pursuing a future with economics, but for the average student, he is scary.
I absolutely DESPISE this class and professor. Plott is condescending and asks so many rhetorical questions that nobody wants to talk in class anymore. And then he gets mad when the class doesn't talk. He also threatens to not help your grade at the end of the semester if you email him something dumb. Impersonal. Way too hard for intro. TERRIBLE.
Prof. Plott is misunderstood in his teaching style - while the class is difficult, it's designed to make you think critically (surprise!) and be able to justify your remarks. Anyone can have an opinion, few can support it soundly. His retorts and seemingly snide remarks are just his sense of humor; don't take it personally. Office hours are a must!
You need to put in the effort for this course, but he makes class engaging and tries to help you and your grade as much as possible. He helps you out w/ the textbook and is a pretty cool prof overall. I'm taking him next semester because he actually helps you learn and understand the material and also gives insights into great career paths.
Professor Plott really knows what he is talking about, and he is super passionate about what he teaches. His lectures are actually interesting. tbh I thought this was going to be a boring economics class but Prof Plott made it fun. In his class you are sure to not only learn but also to better understand economics, and you will have fun doing it.
As a person, Prof. Plott is really annoying however, he is a good teacher and you can tell that he really cares about teaching well. The class is pretty hard and you definitely need to study a lot. Going to the lectures is the #1 thing to help you succeed. I probably would not take him again because he makes me angry but you do you.
if ur major is econ take him. VERY high quality prof but you NEED to WORK for your grade. if ur not an econ major dont put urself though his class. if you get him you will love him. hes funny, LONG office hours, & well respected. always willing to help even if it dosent appear so. all multiple choice exams NO PHONES HE HATES THEM AND WILL GET MAD
Average teacher! I respect him for being cool and pretty relatable. But you will not get an A in this class. There isnt any homework, participation and attendance doesnt count, but Jesus no matter how hard I tried I didnt get an A! Its all quizzes, 2 exams, and problem sets which are just like longer quizzes. So if u want a B in ECON, take it
Great teacher on paper, but not in practice. His lectures are engaging but his personality ruins it. He gets weirdly defensive and upset by random things and will snap at students when they have legit questions. Exam questions are weirdly-worded and do not reflect students' actual understanding. If he improves his attitude he'd be a great teacher.
Good teacher, helps your grade as much as possible, very helpful. There is a textbook, but you don't need to use it and he gives you a pdf. Attendance is not mandatory, but highly recommended. He's a really nice guy and is really funny and makes class interesting.
Very engaging lectures despite the 2.5 hour class block. ECON is one of those subjects where you either get it or you don't, but his class is not designed to land you with less than a B if you put in the effort. Gives exams back and online practice problems which make the class' design very approachable to a student of any educational background.
Professor Plott has the best office hours I've ever been to. He clearly answers questions about problem sets and material and loves to connect our material to real world. The best way to receive an A is by attending his office hours, understanding every question on problem sets, and looking over his detailed slides. Nonetheless, take his class!
Great prof for ECON 323 - group projects were interesting and a great way to diversify the grading. Material is interesting and relatable - office hours are extremely helpful, prof Plott wants to make sure each one of his students succeed
Plott is a good professor and structures his class around learning rather than moving on before students understand the concept. If you come to class regularly you will appreciate his sense of humor and you are more likely to succeed. His detailed power points are very useful, but so is class time. He does not share political views and is neutral.
Very lecture heavy and hes not good at teaching his lectures. He also thinks he is funny, he is not. Study guides are decent and helpful for tests but they are hard.
Plott's lectures tend to be rapid-fire, with snarky comments towards students when a concept is lost on them. However, to give credit where credit is due, Plott is very knowledgeable about the topics he presents, and is easily accessible outside of the classroom. The class itself is fairly easy as long as you attend lectures.
I really dont know what the fuss is about, but this guy can teach. Honestly, place yourselves in his shoes. These professors have PhDs and are teaching people who dont even want to be there in the first place. We all know yall want the degree and not the knowledge - therefore, start with the person in the mirror. I thought his class was a breeze
Very knowledgeable. A lot of the reviews made me worried, but he is a good professor! He is a little snarky sometimes, but I think that's just his personality. Although attendance isn't mandatory, it's SO helpful to go to every lecture to get things not explained as well in slides. 3 tests, 1 final, and 6-7 problem sets make up your grade.
This class wasn't as bad as everyone said. However, if you don't want to put in the effort definitely don't take this class. If you aren't a good test taker I also wouldn't reccomend this class. tests were 80% of your final grade. Professor Plott did a good job delivering the material, even though his lectures were sometimes boring.
Dr. Plott teaches a tough class, but he does a good job teaching it. He knows his stuff through and through. Economics is just an annoying class to take, if you actually care to learn the material take it with Plott, if you want an easy A look for a different professor.
all-around great professor - you learn so much from this class, and he's always willing to help you out when you put in the work. Highly recommend.
Plott knows what he is talking about and is super funny. Class is based on 5ish homework assignments, 3 exams, and the final. If you try, even if you suck at econ, you won't fail. He is a good professor who gives good study guides and teaches concepts well. Tests don't have B.S. questions to trick you. Take Plott!
Help, honestly pick anyone but him I struggled so much. Econ just does not come easy to me I was so lost. His office hours not helpful bc limited availably and he is condescending. Tutors he selects for the class are the most helpful. Hoping I never see this guy again made me feel like I was the worse student ever when I was trying my best.
Honestly this class is hard, unless you are good at econ. it's hard to learn anything from him. He teaches too fast and you are only graded on a few things. Yes, he is smart but the teaching style and content is too much. We are rushing these last two weeks and it's overwhelming, he makes me feel like I should drop this class and he's snarky.
If this is your first econ class do not take Plott. He teaches material too fast and tends to snap at random times. I feel as if I have barely learned anything from this class. If you do take him be ready to study a lot... He knows what he is teaching but the structure is just not there. If you legitimately enjoy econ then maybe Plott is for you.
Plott is a smart teacher but his teaching style is very fast paced and can sometimes come off as rude. His office hours are not the best, I had to skip my other class to go. His tutors are better at explaining than he is I highly recommend going to them.
Whoever is giving this class a 5 must be an econ genius. Personally, this class was not easy and too fast paced for me. This was my first econ class and I found it difficult to keep up and understand. Maybe if you are good at econ and math then take him.
Let me preface by saying Prof. Plott is a good teacher. he knows the material well and his powerpoints are more complete than i have encountered in my other classes. but, i have never encountered a teacher who was more vindictive/ seemingly wanted his students to struggle more than him. he seems majorly unhappy/mad and takes it out on his students.
Dr Plott is hard, but Econ isn't easy it is meant to be a challenge. Taking any micro course by him will set you up for understanding Econ as a topic better as a whole. Not an easy A but for any field this is foundational and you should be knowledgable on this. If you respect him he respects you. Sometimes he humbles you but so that you can grow.
Not an easy pass class, but a knowledgeable guy who clearly cares about teaching. If you don't care at all about economics, take someone else. Great sense of humor, pretty sarcastic and dry which isn't for everyone but I enjoyed. His class was one of my hardest this term but I'd happily take him again.
Thought he was a great professor who was clear on what you need to accomplish to get a good grade. Reopens exams to allow to get points back. You will struggle if you don't go to class. Wants you to understand concept not just learn it. Not too difficult but you will have to study for exams. I learned more about econ from him than anyone else.
Amazing professor. He is very upfront and direct, but really cares about your grade. He bumped my grade up to an A- at the end of the semester because I went to class, went to office hours, and was dedicated to learning. He is very willing to help you with whatever you need if you clearly put in the work. I would take him again! I love him!
Professor Plott was extremely knowledgeable about Economics, and you can see his passion through his work. His class is by far not an easy one. Your grade will represent the work you put in. He will respect you but will be extremely blunt. Take that for what it's worth. Would retake him.
Professor Plott is an insanely smart guy, but I didn't like this class. His lectures were super dense, and the course was graded based on very few things that he waited until the end of the semester to assign. Super harsh grader, but is very accessible during his office hours to go over assignments. This class requires you to learn how to R code.
Dennis Plott is a good professor, he just takes some getting used to. He can be a bit sarcastic or come off as rude, but he really is a funny guy that cares about students. Go to his office hours and he will make sure you understand. Don't be easily offended or goof off and you'll be just fine. I will add that the take home tests are quite hard.
I would say, his lectrures are pure gold, I am a first year taking a class that is primarily a 3rd year class. The ammount of work you put in definetly reflects your effort. Make sure he knows your name, and give it your all. He is extremely passionate and he knows his stuff. If there was a way to make sure I would take him again I would. 100/10.
I had a really terrible experience in Dr. Plott's class. As a student with accessibility needs, I had to argue with him and advocate for myself to be able to use my accommodations the entire semester. He also only tells you about exams a week before they happen, so it's hard to plan out your semester. Way too difficult for an intro econ class.
Dennis Plott sparked a general disdain in myself for the discipline of economics when I took this class. I have never had a more arrogant and difficult professor in all my college years. He is rude and condescending and makes life for students with accommodations very difficult. It's a shame he's the only microecon professor on LSC.
nice guy, but exams were very difficult. not many opportunities to raise your grade, but did allow exam resubmissions. VERY lecture heavy. it was very difficult for an intro class, as there was a LOT of memorization and very niche details you had to know.
Professor Plott is the best. He has a ton of knowledge about economics and helps you really understand things with good examples. Tests and homework are difficult but as long as you have a decent understanding of the material, show up to class, and demonstrate you are trying he will make sure you improve and pass.
Professor Plott is incredibly smart. What made his class frustrating and difficult was how he presents his questions and his extremely harsh and vague grading standards. Most questions feel borderline subjective, "use economic reasoning" is code for his opinion. Other than the quizzes, receive no feedback, so you'll never know what you did wrong.
I loved taking ECON with him. His lectures were very informative, and he is also pretty funny. The only thing that I didn't like was that exams were 80% of your grade, but I think his exams were fair and not extremely difficult. I would so recommend taking Professor Plott.
Prof is very knowledgeable and put a lot of effort into his curriculum. While the course is significantly challenging, it was in a satisfying way. Very lecture heavy, and HW was very hard to do as we never went over similar questions in class (only a small % of your grade, but determines how well you will do on the test). Hes a bit intimidating.
If you intend to take future econ classes, this is a great class to set you up for future success. If you do not intend to dedicate significant time to econ and are looking for an easier class, this class is not a good fit. It's hard because its a new topic for many. He provides you with tools to succeed and really cares about your experience.
He is incredibly difficult and likes to trick his students. He creates all the work himself, so the problems are based on his knowledge and the book he wrote, which no one knows anything about. He tries to fail people so they aren't able to graduate on time. Almost everyone drops it or fails because of the difficulty level. Wish it wasn't like that
VERY lecture heavy, if you don't go to class you will fail. exams are 80% of the grade, and even though I would go to every class and study for hours to prepare, best exam grade I got was a B+. Difficult for an into level class, but prof plott is a good teacher with interesting lectures, and he wants his students to do well.
Complains for ~5 min of class abt how no one shows up to class BUT ATTENDANCE ISNT MANDATORY.. jokes a LOT abt how we hate him&give bad reviews. U can't rely on slides if u miss lecture bcause he skips around and doesn't read from them at all. Gives examples but never clear definition of terms you need to know. if u get social anxiety, avoid him
He wants his students to succeed and is very knowledgeable. Considering it was an intro level class, it was very difficult. Exams were challenging. I'd take him again, but I don't think his skills are best suited for 201. Attendance not mandatory, but go because he doesn't just read off the slides. Online problem sets and quizzes before each exam.
Genuinely has good jokes. His lectures are really interesting and I got a lot out of the class. The only reason I disliked him was because he would constantly complain about how no one liked him- if he didn't say that I don't think I would have noticed it very much. Other than that though I do think his class had a lot of value.
Very interesting lecturer who genuinely cares but can go on tangents and spend 20+ minutes teaching real world things that won't show up on exams. Tough grader but fair and expects you to review often. Exam's are 80% but only the last unit is difficult. don't feel overconfident but it's not a hard class to pass.
Professor Plott is quite an interesting professor. He complains about people not coming to class, but attendance really isn't mandatory at all. Grade consists of 3 exams and a cumulative final. Definitely go to class, as the slides are not much help and he explains more in class, but overall just makes it pretty hard for an intro-level course.
dennis is weird. he acts all quirky in the beginning but does a full 360 and is super rude the next day. anyone who says he's a good prof is glazing. he is mean when u don't understand. exams r extremely tough. how miserable do you have to be to give back only a quarter point? says attendance isn't required yet he loses his mind when ppl don't show
Make use of office hours, he is very helpful and will reteach concepts. Don't need to memorize facts, as long as you truly understand the material and attend class, you will get a good grade. Makes class interesting by telling jokes and using relevant/funny examples. If most of the class gets a test question wrong, he often gives points back.
This class was lowkey diffcult, but he's always there to help. Hes funny and makes class fun. Problem sets were pretty difficult but it could be worse tbh. He wants you to do well in class.
Professor Plott is not at all welcoming to students with accommodations or disabilities, I was in Econ328 in the fall of 2024 and midway through the semester I became victim of domestic abuse. This caused me to miss class time and assignments. Even after going through SAC, Professor Plott was unwilling to make accomodations and thus failed me.
Very insecure man. Finds joy in acting more intelligent than he actually is. Very condescending towards students. Over complicates every question by using complex english that takes away from the point of the question. Not a great teacher or guy. Spends his free time making incorrect chegg solutions to his own problems to catch people out.
Dr. Plott is a very fair and knowledgable professor. The class is a lot of information, but very applicable. He can be intimidating at first because he does have a lot of strict rules he expects his students to follow, but not scary once you get to know him. Very responsive to how students are doing. Cares about his students.
Prof Plott really knows what he is talking about and I guess you could say is pretty decent at teaching. However, is a very tough grader and the exams are AWFUL. He also makes some rude comments here and there, and he doesn't do much to help you improve your grade.
Hear me out. This guy is a beast. Incredible professor, who really cares, and is genuinely hilarious. ECON 201 and 202 are both incredibly information heavy courses and the content is naturally difficult. Professor Plott teaches the content quickly but efficiently. No electronics for a reason, he makes you lock in. He will make you love Econ. 10/10
Professor Plott's lectures are engaging and informative, though the class can be challenging. Attending is key, as he doesn't just read slides. Try using Unstuck ai and past exams to prepare - it really helps.
He is a very bad professor, no matter how much I study, his tests are very difficult. His questions are misleading and confusing. His overall rating on this site is misleading and should be lower.
DO NOT TAKE DENNIS PLOTT. Worst professor I've taken at Loyola. Acts like he's better than his students and is extremely passive aggressive. You practically have to reteach yourself all the material because he goes so fast on the slides. Do not take Dennis plott do not take Dennis plott do not take dennis plot if you want to actually learn
Everyone who rates this dude higher than a 2.0 is glazing and probably a professor's pet. He has a temper and will snap on you if you're even remotely wrong about something. He also hates when you use other material to learn even though he only uses slides. God forbid you make a quizlet 😱, if he finds it he takes points off for the entire class.
Amazing professor. Despite the difficulty of the class I would gladly have him as my professor again. I loved it so much I'm adding an economics major to my course load. You have to go to class and you have to take notes and put in tons of effort. If you do all that you will be fine and you will actually learn. It's an eye opening class.
Mr. Plott is a great professor and does a really good job of teaching material. I enjoyed his class because I actually learned things and I love econ even though it was a difficult class. Mr. Plott's humor is very refreshing. Gives you materials to help you learn. Wants you to do well!! Grade: 3 Exams, attendance helps grade, some hw, problem sets
You can tell that Plott is an extremely knowledgeable lecturer and very much so cares about what he's teaching. But the way he teaches doesn't necessarily make it easy to understand the concepts he's trying to get across because he glosses over vital info. Exams are super long and wordy. Probably better options for an introductory course like ECON.
Plott is one of the best prof I've had at loyola. The lectures are really good, and if you need help he's super accessible. There is a no tech policy in the class, which I found to be pretty helpful, but if thats a problem for you then maybe don't take this class. I learned a ton in this class, but it isn't easy.
Plott was the worst professor I had in my four years at Loyola. Obsessing over catching students cheating to the point that you make fake Quizlets is not normal. Plott likes to say he cares about our learning, but that is not felt. The course content is mostly fine, but the trick questions and condescending professor ruin the learning experience.
Do not take this man unless you want to become an economist. He has a Phd in economics and thinks things are a lot simpler than they are. 50% of your grade takes place in the finale week of class. Very Smart...HORRIBLE TEACHER. The finale exam review could be in Chinese for all I know as he simply just did not teach the majority of it.
All around just should not be professor at all. He needs to focus on research. He is obsessed with catching students cheat to the point that I dumbed myself down on papers in fear he would think it's AI. No tech in class. Instead of using the word "easy" he will use "pellucid" and that explains him down to a T. SO CONDESCENDING.
by far the worst professor I have ever had at Loyola. I took his ECON 323 in the spring of 2025, and he said this was the first time his course had been approved for both a final research paper and final exam. He ended class early every single time and never got all the way through the material, yet are still tested on it for the final.
he is an awful professor genuinely do not take him if you have the chance. he is so condescending to students and passive-aggressive. his class is actually not that hard at all and the material really isnt difficult but he just is uncaring to students. he doesn't care to answer questions or create connections with students. do not take.
Im not sure what all the hate is about with this course. You chose to take a level 300 international Econ course. He is a good teacher and a very smart individual.I remember I reached out over law school help and he gave me an amazing book to read. Yes the COURSE is hard but that doesn't mean he is.
this dudes class average is so bad its like he gets off on seeing his students do bad
He is very disorganized upon explaining the final research paper and STILL made us take a final exam. He literally goes over 100 powerpoint slides the whole class and expects us to remember everything for the final exam. Again he doesn't provide a review session for the final so it's all up to you.
Can be very condescending and even rude but he is an incredible professor. Attendance isn't mandatory but you need to go to be successful. Sets very clear rules for the classroom and expects everyone to adhere, especially no electronics, which helps tbh. Lectures are incredibly helpful and the way he explains concepts makes them understandable.
Terrible. Don't take unless you are incredibly passionate about econ. He doesn't seem to understand that 201 is an intro course. Tests are challenging, and Plott often tries to trick you with the questions. Also, I think he might be writing reviews on here to boost his rating bc IDK how he has so many 5-star reviews.
Don't take 323 w/ Plott unless you are an Econ major. He has high expectations for his students. I did not mind the rigor but felt that he did not reciprocate his standards. He is quite disorganized. Constantly pushed due dates back to the class's detriment. Grade consists of weekly in-classes, a research paper, and a hard final. Be wary.
Adored his class -- got me so hooked on the subject I switched my major to econ. Nice guy. Plott respects you if you respect him. Go to class, try your best -- he will notice and reward you for it. Don't know why his ratings are so low... if you want an easy A and a skippable class this is not the course for you. If you want to learn, take him!
Be afraid.
Does a poor job explaining content in different ways for understanding. Is very specific with the way he teaches his class and doesn't take constructive criticism.
he is an okay professor. his tests are hard but he does give a chance to do corrections but you only can get a certain amount of points back. I think he can be rude at times like if you ask him something thats on the syllabus he'll genuinely give you a death stare in front of the whole class. if you can take someone else maybe do that.
First he moves way too fast. He will genuinely have a slide with 2 paragraphs on the board for like 10 seconds. For this being an intro class, he expects students to know as much as he knows. He knows that he moves fast and still does nothing to help students. His exams don't clearly have things gone over in class. He thinks he's funny but isn't.
Awful at teaching but cool guy, if you can avoid taking him do it and beware of this class!!!
Bad Professor...
PLEASE JUST GO TO HIS CLASS, while attendance is not required it shows him who rlly cares about his class and who doesn't. If you ask questions or go to his office hours you will genuinely never regret it. He rewards you on how much you show up for yourself. The lectures aren't super informational and more yapping but still rec. going.
He's nice and the lectures are interesting no electronics, and the exams are hard. He really tires to help though and is always available. Taking him again next semester.
He acts as if you have a PhD in economics prior to taking an intro level class. Slides are outdated that contain paragraphs of information on each slide that he glosses over very quickly giving no time to take notes. Exams are structured to try their best to trick you. He cares more about catching students cheating rather than actually teaching.
