he is a good teacher, solves the easy and straightforward problems. makes so much effort to be tough on grading , you loose points for everything. quizzes are always long , difficult and little time to finish. it looks impossible to make A in his class .
This guy is the worst teacher i have ever taken in my LIFE!!!! Was forced to drop after studying about 3 hours everyday for his class and getting 70s. Too much work and no results. Horrible teacher and has no regards in passing his students. DONT TAKE HIM!!!!
Mr Quist refuses to give an A grade on anything. He takes points off for everything! He says if you do the homework and do well on the quizzes you will do on the test. This is not true. The tests look like a greek manuscript compared to the problems you have done in preparation for the test. I will probably receive my first C in college.
Mr Quist gives you homework to do that is worded totally different than the problems in the book. Just because you do well on the problems in the book, don't bank on doing well on the test. The problems in class are very similar to the ones on the test but he will have a lot more conversions for you to do within the problem on the test. DO NOT take
Don't take any classes with this teacher. He is not helpful at all during labs and also do not expect to get a 100% on anything in this class. Quizzes and tests are different and notes are different from the book. His grading is super hard and also tend to be rude at times when you ask him a question at times. Seems like he wants to fail students.
I just dropped the class five minutes ago and couldn't wait to write a review. I wish I could say I was just terrible at chemistry. However I loved my previous chemistry class and even got an A... Can't teach, takes points off for a simple misspell, not helpful... God help you if you take this class
This is by far the worst teacher i have ever encounter in my college experience . I took calc II and i didn't put this much time and effort in it and got an A-. I was studding more than 5 hours every day, but with this teacher i was forced to drop the class. It seems like he gets joy when students drop his class. He doesn't like to help.
AVIOD him. Save your money and avoid his class. the worst teacher ever
the worst teacher ever I don't recommend him at all
THE WORST TEACHER. be happy and avoid his class
If you come 2-5 minutes late he will give you zero in the homework. he won't remind you about the exams or quizzes because he expect you to read the syllabus. Basically horrible teacher don't waste your time and your money with him
because this semester was his first semester, I couldn't know anything about him but since you have a better chance read the comments on this web and avoid taking his class
terrible, and the worst teacher doesn't give extra credit, very hard with his exams, tough grader, very rude, not helpful, doesn't make sense most the times.
This is the worst teacher ever. Very hard grader, doesnt help at all. Confusing and rude. Never take his class. I am an A student and I have a C in his class. Basically, he made me hate chemistry and all the science classes even tbough this was my first science in college. He makes you feel very dumb. I dont recommend anyone to take him
man where to begin with this teacher. i dont even know what is going on with him but one of the worst teachers ever!!! Honestly it will be better if you just skip the semester your thinking about taking chem with him and go on vacation. Enjoy your self and dont TAKE HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have a masters in education and took this class for continuing education purposes. This is by far the worst science course I have ever attended with respect to grading and overall difficulty. This is a no prerequisite course that anyone would struggle to pass with a C. over 12 the class dropped by the 6th week. DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE!
Worst teacher of any subject ever. Testvare ultra hard, extended concepts if what is actually taught in lecture. Encourages you you document bad lab data insteading helping identify what you did wrong in lab so he can later take points away. Luck if you can earn a d in this course. This guy belongs in a business not teaching students.
Took weird notes during lab that he'd hide when you went to ask a question(that were never effectively answered). Belittled students & seemed uninterested in their success. The 4 exams were too hard for his subpar lectures, took a lot of points off wio an explanation, wo the drops my grade would suffer, find another professor or teach yourself
He was very tough and not fair. He explained easy stuff in class and in the quizzes and exams he was surprising us with new stuff. He made the class harder than it supposed to. I would never take him again. If you want good grade in this class don't take him but if you want just C you can get it from him but you will have to work very hard for it.
do not take! you will regret!
Ugh! Do not take this instructor.. Even if you have no other option dont take him. Try a different campus! He doesnt help at all. Will never answer your questions! Takes notes during labs and exams which are so annoying. Makes you feel uncomfortable by starring at you and taking notes like we are in a talent show!! Doesnt give extra credit AT ALL
Before i took his class i checked this webiste for any reviews and he had none!! And now i check again and everyone has described him exactly how i would! Plz do ur self a favor and dont take him! U will not learn anything! I was a chem major and had to change it cuz of him!
Currently enrolled in Mr Quist's Che-1520 course. His lectures are clear, and he posts them online (D2L) which is extremely useful. He makes himself as available as possible with many office hours for one on one sessions which you can book online. He is a great teacher and does not deserve many of the negative comments I have read about him.
He makes up new rules almost every single class period and doesn't really explain material well. He is rude and discriminates against students. Do not take him, be prepared to get outside help with classwork and understanding the material if you do take him.
Dennis is a good professor, but he expects the students to know the material after the material has been taught. He demands you meet twice with him through the semester and that counts toward your total participation grade. His test are confusing and book material will also be on the test that he will not cover in his lecture.
He is a very rude person. He won't answer your questions and makes you feel stupid every time you ask one. He is not lenient whatsoever and is not understanding. His lectures are confusing and he moves fast on topics that deserve more attention. This class is awful. If you can get a better teacher, save yourself and do so now!!!
Absolute worst professor ever. I came in with an open mind ready to learn and he made me feel dumb, along with refusing to answer questions during lab. Knows nothing about teaching. Stay away from him for your own good or you'll surely be dissapointed.
Very difficult grader, fast paced teaching, boring. He's a nice guy, just a poor teacher.
You must take his class very seriously! on everything you turn in he will check over every problem and take points off every small simple mistake. Overall he is a great guy and during office hours he will go over anything your confused about. No doubt this class will teach you how to be more of a successful student if you take the time to study.
I came to the conclusion, after reading the posts and being in his class, that this instructor simply does not have any clue how to teach this class. Such a lack of talent ! Many concepts are easy but he has the ABILITY to make them very confusing. His exams are just as confusing as the lectures, going way beyond the level of the book.
Worst Instructor I've ever had. I got an A in all my classes except for his and he's the reason my gpa dropped. Never would recommend and have to retake chem because of him
Lectures are a little dry, but overall good instructor.
Anybody who needs to take General Chem should take it with Quist! I'm assuming a lot of the negative feedback is from people who expect an A to be handed to them without doing any work. Quist makes you work for your grade. It is definitely possible to get an A in the class, I did. Work hard, put effort into the class, and take notes!!
good instructor in class but explains unclear, fast, and very rude in lab, dont take him!!!!!!!! or you will probably get a bad grade.
If you are a science major, sign up with Mr. Quist. If not, I would recommend looking elsewhere if possible. This is a professor that is here to teach you, not to boost your GPA. If you take the class seriously, have decent algebra skills, you will be fine. He is a tough grader and makes you pay attention to details. Great professor.
He is a horrible teacher and a rude person. Hes not even a proffessor so he should not be on "rate my proffessor". He is just a jerk, it's impossible to do well and he is not leniant or understanding in anyways.
Hate him. Makes it imposible to get good grades. He also loves making you feel stupid when you ask him questions. Horrible guy, horrible teacher. Don't take him.
NEVER TAKE HIM EVER!!! SOO MEAN AND GRADES RIDICULOUSLY STRICT
While reading these reviews about Quist, I didn't think any of it was true. I felt as if they were only written by incompetent and lethargic students. But upon taking Quist the only incompetent is he himself. He provides no details on what he expects in lab reports, yet he grades as if the course was grad level. He is an absolute mess. STAY AWAY.
DO NOT TAKE HIM! IF YOU HAVE TO TAKE THIS CLASS TAKE IT SOMEWHERE ELSE!
Good in-class demonstrations. Good examples for problem solving. Gave 4 coupons worth 1% each that could be applied for due dates or the exam. The only disappointment was that the final exam. The final exam, in my opinion, was a 3-hours exam, but the students were only given 1 hour and 50 minutes.
I only passed this class because he made the final standardized. The final was child's play compared with his tests. He incorporated into his tests problem types which he never reviewed with us. Extremely strict and picky (even for a science teacher). He flatters himself with the excuse that he shapes our lives, but he really destroys them.
From the reviews, I can understand the love or hate. You will likely love him if you take the time to study. You will likely hate him if you don't. Lectures are great but very basic, he lays the foundation that you need to work on problems yourself. A little unprepared at times, but he knows his Chemistry and pushes students to think for themselves
This class is impossible. There isn't really any homework but you'll need to do everything you possibly can. Attend class, it's your best shot at passing. He will take points off for everything! The exams are impossible. Most of the class got 40% on the second one.
He isn't the most approachable person to get help from, but he does help if asked. That's just the tip of the iceberg though considering all reading material won't even reflect what is on his test; he wants you to apply what you learn, but often doesn't teach towards what he is asking questions on which is counter intuitive... Pretty lame.
Worst professor ever! doesn't give out study guides or notes. just gives you a few handouts and writes down a few things you for sure need to know. You're on Your own when it comes to learning. quizzes everyday, don't miss class or be late. you're better off at a different campus he doesn't teach at all. just makes you watch him do experiments.
don't ever think of taking him. you will waste your time and money. he might be knowledgeable but he is the worst teacher I've ever seen. Don't take it. don't take it, don't take it. wait another semester, go to different school or even campus, just DON'T TAKE HIM.
Every class meeting a Lab Report, Lab Intro Procedures Data and Calc, pre lab quiz and Graded Worksheet are due. Mr. Quist will not answer any questions during lab. Lecture is sped through, very unclear and generic. A quiz at the beginning of each class period. This is a self taught self study class. I am a 3.98 student and have a C- so far, avoid.
Said homework was due on Thursdays. Showed up Tuesday and said that homework was due. Doesn't remember what he said in class and always changes it. Can't ask to clarify test questions even if it doesn't make sense. Is a fanatic when it comes to lab time. He will yell at you for no good reason. He is the most unreasonable teacher.
I had Professor Dennis Quist for Survey of Organic Chemistry and Biochemisty at OCC Highland Lakes. There was a homework sheet due everyweek on Thursday. There was a weekly lab. He used every second of lecture time to teach the hardest concepts of the chapters. he knows his chem. he is eager to help his students, he doesnt make you feel dumb. GREAT
Mr. Quist is a nice person. He doesn't make you feel dumb and he's easy to talk to. His class is graded on a % scale, so every point counts! Don't expect to get easy points on labs or HW. The class average on the first exam: 60%. His class is tough but doable. YOU HAVE TO STUDY AND PRACTICE MULTIPLE EXAMPLES. If you don't study well, don't take him
If you ask questions you won't get an answer for them. he looks at you like you're a complete idiot. lectures are super fast, not well thought out. goes over extreme amounts of material& doesn't test most of it. doesn't post power points or lecture notes so if you don't copy something you're out of luck. I studied 12 hours a week a week & struggled
Quizzes on pre-material before each class. Small amount of points add up over time. Does not hand back to check answers. Assigns crap load of reading to only ask 5 questions on pre-material. Not clear about what material we will be on exam. Lecture notes are taken by hand and NOT uploaded to D2L. Expects you to know physics for most of course mater
He was literally the worst teacher I have ever had in my life. I have always loved chemistry but once I took his class he made me hate the subject. I would never take him again and I would never suggest that you take him if you can take someone else.
Mr. Quist teaches like you like you know what he knows. He's very anal about his deadlines. He wants everything due 10 minutes after class starts or it's an F. His lectures are very fast and he does not share his notes. exams are very tough he gives hw every class that is just as hard, complete prelab or no lab for you . Avoid this professor
Probably the worst class I have ever taken. The teacher tries to make the tests as difficult as possible (not in a test your knowledge way, but more like a just for the sake of being difficult way). He expects you to know everything he does, and then grades you to a standard he doesn't even hold his answer keys to. If you value your GPA don't take.
Horrible teacher, can't explain anything to save his life
Quist is a very tough teacher but a good one. Let's not forget that the course material is also difficult. He offers a lot of resources for success, and definitely makes it apparent that he is there for his students. If you are a science major and truly love chemistry I recommend this class. If not, find a different professor.
.... do i even have to say anything? Just look at what everyone else said, horrible teacher
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! His tests are irrelevant to his lectures and you will have to teach yourself everything. He's picky about the most insignificant things, and although he's not a hateable person at all, he shouldn't have become a prof. Just do yourself a favor and don't take this class.
This was one of the hardest classes I have taken at OCC, so beware going into it. Very meticulous with deadlines and small details, both of which are easy to lose points on, which add up. Overall a good professor who care about his students, but isn't going to let you pass without putting in a tremendous amount of work.
This is a hard class, and Prof Quist is not an easy professor. However, he is a good teacher. He's strict on grading and rules (attendance, proper lab dress, significant figures), but he tries to help out as much as possible, making sure the students understand the material.
Mr Quist is a nice guy. However, his lectures are very basic and his tests are about as hard as possible for the given material. He is also the hardest grader I have ever encountered, it's incredible. If u don't show every single step of work and explain everything AND do it all exactly how he would,u will get marked down. I would avoid himif u can
Don't Take him, period.
Chemistry is a hard subject, so don't expect an easy A. Quist is strict about grading and provides clear criteria in the syllabus. His tests are hard, I would recommend reading the textbook to supplement the lecture notes. He is a nice guy, but he wants you to work for your grade. The class is not impossible, but be prepared to study.
Save your GPA and take orgo with any other teacher. I am a 4.0 student and I literally failed this class. His test don't relate to the lecture material at all. And don't get me started on the final. The whole class just stared at it for about an hour because it looked like a different language. This class made me change my major honestly.
Hes a great teacher and I would definitely take him again! he lays out exactly what you need to know and does a good job explaining everything so that you can understand it! The only thing that is hard in that class is the labs, but he's there to help you if you need it!
Hes a good teacher. Nice guy who will help you if you ask. His exams go right along with his lectures you just need to do similar practice problems. Very tough grader
Mr. Quist is super approachable and helps you out if you dont understand the material. He is very helpful and very approachable. The material of the subject is hard but he makes it easy to understand. You just need to give your full attention and be participative in his class. He Always gives credit for your effort.
Mr Quist is very helpful when you ask for help, but he is the toughest grader. You have to write down everything he says in his notes or else his notes won't help you when you look back. GET A TEXTBOOK and create group chats. This class was harder than a uni class & i retook it when i wanted to replace my uni grade for this class. really hard tests
Don't take this guy, his grading is EXTREMELY unfair. Grading criteria is weird, seems like he grades some harder than others. If you are a guest student at OCC he'll make you never want to comeback, just do yourself a favor and take this at your home university. Not that hard of a class, he's just such a bad teacher.
Doesn't fully answer questions. A lot of homework, exam is very hard
Tough grader with the lab reports. He will grade you down three points on each report because you didn't write down an equation in a certain way (I wish I could be more specific). He will never open the textbook. He puts the notes from class on D2L, so if you have him two days a week then be smart if you decide to skip. Every class is just lecture.
I dont know why is he rated low, but if you do decide to take him its worth because youll learn a lot, and overall you will end up smarter. If you want an easy A I would steer clear because his test are somewhat hard and he takes time writing his exams. He is always willing to help
There is a pre-lab before every lab session, which includes questions from previous labs or current, and you have to guess which lab it is about. Also, you have to guess which problems to do in your lab report if the class decides to omit certain sections of lab. Hw includes stuff you didn't learn in class. CHE1000 only has one test, the final exam
I'm currently taking orgo with no problem and still struggled more in his class. I don't even think he knows his own subject because whenever I'd ask him a question about it he wouldn't even give me a real answer. Grades unfairly and hw doesn't help one bit. Labs are not only pointless but heavily graded on. IF YOU HAVE TO TAKE AT ANOTHER SCHOOL!!!
- I actually really appreciated his nerdy, dry-humor. - Youre going to have to study to do well. Hes not gonna spoon feed you everything on his exams, but if you ask him questions he answers you honestly. I cant emphasize that enough. Only complaint- On exam day, he wont answer questions of any kind. Even if a question is ambiguous.
in the beginning, I was extremely hopeful about doing well in this class. his personality is nice and he is good at lecturing. he is very thorough and provides examples. I was very confident that I understood the material. however, on test days I NEVER had enough time to finish tests. extremely tough grader. big disconnect between lectures and exam
Professor Quist is very knowledgeable in his trade which is chemistry. His lectures are quite rich and in depth. He forces you to get good study habits and makes you approach the subject in a whole different manner. He will make other classes seem like a joke, I know after learning chemistry from professor Quist he made taking other subjects eas
Made the class unnecessarily difficult, I went on to many other chemistry classes and the way he taught this course still scars me. I also found him to be pretty condescending, maybe he's a nice guy outside of the school environment but my impression of him was less than favorable.
DO NOT TAKE! 0/5! AWFUL PROF!!! Listen when I say this, Quist is the worst chem teacher I have EVER HAD! He is the TOUGHEST grader and AWFUL at teaching. His tests are extremely unfair and his tests include info that he has NEVER lectured on. I went to chemistry tutoring and two of the chem tutors I had said hes terrible and rude.
I literally love chemistry and he made me MAD. Labs arent too hard but have absolutely nothing to do with what we learned .. online class and never even saw his face all we had were super long youtube videos he doesnt teach anything and never answers emails. horrible and annoying
id rather redo my whole program than take that guy again
I had taken Calc 1-3 and Diff Eq. prior to this class, and Quist's tests remain the most brutal thusfar; only around half of the class has enough time to finish any given test, and those questions that you do finish are graded down to the pencil stroke. Due dates are arbitrary (i.e. 10 a.m. on Saturday for a class on Thursday)
(now dropping) Organic Chemistry as a post-bacc prereq/student, and this has been my WORST academic experience. This professor delays email responses, and his office hours are BARELY 15 minutes, rushing students away. One small error results in an entire question marked wrong. It's frustrating, but I'll focus on moving forward. Karma will handle it
