Great, great, great! I really liked Professor Randall. We read good literature, and he got me writing better essays. He's an interesting guy, and he teaches well.
I took him freshman year and remember topics brought up in class where very interesting (a lot of social issues). I believe we had 2 or three writign assignments. One I wrote he did not understand topic and gave me a bad grade for it. So be careful on your topics. And make sure you participate or he will wont like teaching that class and say it.
If I were an old man I would probably be just like him. He's not cynical but he is sarcastic and has his opinions about things. Lit & Comp - we read short stories, poems, and some plays. We write essays and do peer review and then he gives us feedback.
We discussed interesting topics in class and you only have a few essays, but if you don't write what he wants you to write or you really don't have a good argument, he won't like your papers. I got C's on all of my papers and it was mostly the content. He never went over in class exactly how to write papers. Did not like this class.
Gives vocabulary quizzes. He grades like a college professor but treats you like you're in high school. Chose awful (many not masterpieces in any sense) works to read in class. He can be funny and everything, but it's really not enough. You have 3 in class essays, and if he doesn't like you or what you write, you can't get a good grade.
Great Class. He grades like all teachers should. A's=reserved for seriously great pieces of work, B's=good with lets effort behind them, and C's=averages work. He grades on improvement and effort, but def be willing to except a B (as A's are reserved for those who extremely above the rest) His class is extremely fun, laid back. U will learn alot.
He's a funny guy. He is extremely political and his class is mor of a current affairs class rather than composition. If you're conservative STAY AWAY you'll hate him. for the rest of you, he's a radical guy which is refreshing since hes old. READ THE ASSIGNMENTS. You'll learn a lot.
I love his class! If you are conservative and hate politics dont take the class. He is very energetic and funny. He is sarcastic and down to earth. I would recommend him to everyone.
Very opinionated and grades based on his own views not just quality of work. Doesn't explain expectations on papers, and doesn't teach you to write even though it is a comp class. Most of class time is spent discussing politics and readings from the book. Didn't learn anything. Grades essays hard.
One of the worst professors I've had so far at SCAD. Doesn't teach any script writing format, just throws you into and then proceeds to rip apart your scripts. Do not take him!
Very unprofessional man. Likes to put down students and doesn't grade by content, but on his own opinion. His criticism was rarely helpful, and he was very prone to favoritism. I would never reccomend him, and in my opinion, shouldn't be a professor at all.
He is very interesting, and is always willing to give his opinion. He says he grades off of improvement, but with two weeks left only two people have any kind of grade, and only c's at that. He will work you as hard as he can. Still, you definitely learn what makes a good play, even if you can't write one.
He's a good teacher if you like writing essays, which I did personally. He's a tough grader, makes you read a lot, and write a lot. So yeah, not an easy A. Still he knows his stuff and can seriously hep you learn how to write a great piece, let alone writing that will help you outside of college, if your willing to work your butt off.
He has you read essays written by philosophers, spends all 2 and a half hours of class discussing them, teaches NOTHING about writing even though it is a writing class and then holds your papers to a very high standard. I hated that he didn't teach anything about writing and then expected essays beyond our ability level. Do not take his class.
Just awful. He is, for the most part, and unpleasant and unhelpful person. He tends to waste class time ranting about politics, society etc. and then we get behind on critiques, which are terrible- he teaches you nothing about how to write a script, and then even if you follow his critique, your grade rarely improves. Read nothing but Ibsen.
The course objective emphasizes character development, not just poorly constructed scenes burdened with too much plot and exposition. Conflict and character motivation is key. Read the textbook. The "best" writing was always about someone the writer personally knew. Experimental writers will struggle if unaware of who their characters are.
This teacher will spend most of the time in class talking about his own personal interests and current events. He was funny to me, I enjoyed having him but I didnt learn much about how to improve my writing skills. The assignments were pretty clear but how to carry them out was not. Overall the class was fun, but he was a hard grader. I got a C.
Oh God AVOID. I love English, I love writing but HE DOES NOT TEACH ENGLISH. I learned NADA. Wait, I did learn something, his politics. All he ever does is Whine and Whine. Oh god, every class was torture. I felt like dying. If you want to take an easy english class where all you do is listen to whining and political complaint hes for you.
SO if you already know how to write, then take this class. Even if you think you are an adequate writer, he will rip your essays apart. He does not teach you anything about writing, but will rant on and on about current events. The class discussions on the reading are very long, and he does most of the talking. Be prepared for his class!
He is definitely a tough grader and pushes you for improvement, gives honest feedback. He spends much of the class discussing the readings and current events. Some seem to think that has no place in an education. Most of the complaints that I heard were from slacker students looking for a blowoff class. Show up, participate, and do your best.
This guy is a great professor. He lets you go normally about a hour an hour early and always keeps class interesting. He talks a lot, but I like hearing things from different perspective. The class is difficult but don't be a b, just sack up and work hard, you'll do well.
I love writing but this teacher almost made me change my minor. He did nothing but discourge me at everything I wrote about and when it came to reviewing over our essay's mistake he burned us infront of the whole class. He's horrible blunt and I would not recommend him to anybody.
I'm in his class now - and I can't stand it! He's very funny and political, which isn't a terrible thing, but he's so blunt and harsh on all writing assignments! I used to like writing screenplays, now I'm not too sure I want to write anymore!
He's a good teacher when he stays on task. Unfortunately, he's not that great at staying on task. more often than not he drifts into irrelevant discussions on politics and why he's "disillusioned" with the "system" or specifically SCAD. He has a lot of complaints, and he controls the classroom like a bully. he still talks about Bush...
I adore Professor Randall, but he is a really harsh grader. He expects literary scholar level works out of freshman students. He goes on tangents a lot but it is because it makes the two and a half hour class more bearable. He is hilarious and great to get to know. You read very interesting things in class as well. Make sure your work is perfect!
Honestly one of the best English professors I've ever had. He is really funny and he knows how to keep things interesting. He does go off topic a lot, but about current events and the news. He is a harsh grader, but then again what English professor isn't... Overall if you work hard on your essays you will do fine.
I'm sorry, but he is the worst teacher I've ever had. EVER. His personality is nice, but he's a terrible grader. I wound up spending more time on his class than my studio classes, and still got an F on everything before the revision. I ended with a C. This was the first English class I didn't get an A in. Seriously, AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS!!!
The WORST teacher I have ever had. The first 30 minutes of class, he talks about things irrelevant to class. He always gave me a bad grade on my papers, even though I reviewed them many times, and had piers review them as well. He doesn't tell you how to correct your papers, and never updates his grades. If you have him, switch to another teacher!
Randall was one of my favorite professors of the quarter. He encouraged us to choose the topic of our essays & offered suggestions if someone wasn't sure about what direction to take. He wants college-level writing. Not a course that you can just slide through, but if you're responsible & ask questions then you'll be fine. Read the textbook!
Professor Randall was extremely interesting and very talkative but he gave everyone bad grades. I could spend 10 hours on a paper or 2 hours and would still make the same grade. He also doesn't like Republicans or anyone who disagrees with him for that matter. I wouldn't recommend taking him unless you plan on reading every single essay.
This professor comes into class the first day saying he'd rather be out getting drinking than teaching. It went downhill from there. Even the writing majors worried about passing. His critiques are unhelpful and his grading system makes no sense. In fact, you rarely know your grade. Also, there is no actual teaching done throughout this course.
Professor Randall is my favorite professor at SCAD. Yes, he does start the first 30 mins of class talking about politics & current events - because it's important to know what's happening in the world! He expects college-level work. Do not take if you just want an easy A. He does not give As. I was his favorite and still received a B in the class.
He does not teach anything that has to do with writing, and this class is supposed to be "composition". he is very rude and gets fed up with the class randomly he will assign pop quizzes if you piss him off but if you keep him rambling about current events you can waste a whole class!
His class is definitely one you cannot blow off. Although he had high expectations and was a hard grader, if you showed that you wanted to do well in his class, he does help you. He tends to go off on tangents a lot in class discussions, but he usually lets class out 30 min to an hour early. Be prepared to work hard if you want a good grade.
A ridiculously harsh grader. If you don't write the way he ~wants~ you too, without your personal style, etc he will basically give you a C on everything. I had no idea what he wanted all quarter while I was writing essays i'm pretty sure would receive A's from another professor.
The WORST english teacher I have ever had. I went to a college preparatory high school and i have yet to make above a D on his essays. He cusses every 5 seconds with absolutely no relevance to the topic of discussion. He chooses favorites, even if the student isn't necessarily intelligent. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS, his way or no way.
If you enjoy swearing, Randall is your guy. He's sarcastic, negative and rude. This is any easy class as long as you know how to write using correct grammar and punctuation. If so, he won't even read your papers! Lousy teacher.
Writing for Screen and Stage: He doesn't teach you anything in this class, you read the book he assigned. All we did was critiquing plays that we wrote. I was really excited to take this class but he's not clear on exactly what he wants and likes to rip your play to pieces. He likes funny plays, so write those and you'll get a good grade.
No matter what I did I got a D in every essay I wrote. I got it revised by the writter's studio, by my peers and by my friends; and still a D. Almost lost my scholarship because of him.
He is a great teacher and you learn so much. Grading is extremely difficult. He tells you like it is. t. Its difficult but most students get the hang of it eventually. Great teacher but if your not willing to work super hard for good grads, he is NOT for you.
he is hilarious and, i love him to death but his grading is so freaking tough. Loves to compare and contrast multiple pieces of literature and expects a lot out of students. Take him if you think your skills in english are on another level than regular freshmen's. (you still wont get an a)
Though, but outstanding professor. Wan't to earn your grade? Take him.
His class was hard for me, not being a writing major; but it was also fun. His class discussions are humorous, the play's you read are interesting, and if you really try, you do see improvement in your work. Before taking, I recommend coming up with your idea for your play and screenplay . It will make class sooo much easier for you if you do.
He is very funny. I love him as a person. As a professor, if you want a good grade you will have to work for it. I finished with a B. He's willing to help once you're interested. A lot of quizzes, but they're only worth about 10% of your grade.
If you're taking this class be ready to read A LOT. It's best to go ahead and rent all of the books as soon as you get your syllabus. Quiz every class over the reading you were supposed to do. 2 hellish essays and 1 BRUTAL research paper. Go ahead and start working on it the first day. He's a funny guy and is very helpful. Just work hard & read!
This isn't an easy class. You have to read & write a LOT & you get a vocab/reading quiz every week. Although he might give u R's at the beginning, if u follow his feedback in every extra help session u can get through it. He's a tough guy but he's actually nice deep down. He's also hilarious & ends class early. I'd recommend him if ur a hardworker!
I've never struggled so hard for a grade. This is the only B I've ever gotten at SCAD. I wouldn't take him again. Material was interesting but I truly feel like I didn't learn anything. Pretty much everyone failed the first essay.
As a person, he's hysterical and a genuine guy. Jokes around and rambles on occasion. As a professor however he's one of, if not, THE hardest grader I've ever had to work with. At times you may take three different short quizzes on the same day depending how much reading you had to do for that day. The 7+ page research paper will destroy you.
His class is hard and a lot of work but I actually feel like i'm learning something from him. His lectures are inspirational and a great look on the world. Lots of reading and small quizzes. 4 major essays which he will grade harshly.
Professor Randall is an over all great guy. He is funny and really tries to get his class involved. However he is the hardest grader I have ever had. I was blind sided when the first essay came back and the highest grade in the class was a C. Nice guy but the class itself is a lot of work and the chance to get an A is slim
Prof. Randall is a funny, candid guy who thinks and cares deeply about literature and expects the very best from his students. He's a tough grader when it comes to essays, so make sure to check comma usage and have a solid rhetorical structure supported with textual evidence or he'll tear you to shreds. He makes you work for an A, but it's worth it
I love prof Randall as a person. He is very funny, and he genuinely cares about his students. However, his class's work is heavy. Reading entire plays in a night, quizzes every class. And he grades extremely hard on the essays. Classes are all lectures, and he expects full participation/ discussions. If you put in the effort you will be rewarded.
His "A" is basically a perfect paper. There are quizzes to bring your grade up. Super relaxed on everything but essay grades. Goes off on tangents that are most of the time interesting. He doesn't teach how to write better, only discusses poems and plays that the class will write about.
I never had to analyze Literature let alone write essays on it, so it was an extremely challenging class. In spite of that, I got 100 on each of the almost daily quizzes and strongly participated in class. He noticed my effort and was lenient giving me Bs on my not-B-worthy (according to his standards) essays. So unless you're talented, work hard.
Though I suck at writing papers, I enjoyed this professor. He acts tough but he's a great guy and always makes sure to make himself available outside of class time to help out.
He's very funny and keeps class engaging. Besides that, you only get four essays and if you're not that good of a writer, you're basically doomed.
Read all the material given. Quizzes are somewhat spontaneous as the Professor doesn't follow the syllabus very much, so be prepared. Exams are easy as long as you understand the material (they're open book too). Class is lecture-heavy, but breezes by. Professor is accessible outside of class which helps a lot as long as you show him you work hard
AWFUL! he spends most of the class time going on random rants about politics and his childhood. legit one day he had a breakdown in class about his daddy issues. he cuts you off if you don't agree with his misogynist views. he also calls all female characters slurs. everything talked about in class doesn't come in handy for the exams. don't do it
every class is just him lecturing at you. he expects you to read multiple plays in one night and then quizezs you on it the next day. his exams are a waste of time
You would want to make a lot of analysis and break down what he say. You don't have to agree with his statement, but it makes you think. Overall tough, but it's pretty entertaining. Lots of readings assigned every class. Sometimes you have to finish 70-paged hard-to-digest book in a night. Gives good feedback if your final project is a play/novel.
He's not a bad professor; I just found the class really boring. He's kind of a tough grader but gives good feedback, so as long as follow his feedback on your rough draft, then you'll be fine on your final draft. It's really hard to get an A but you won't have a problem maintaining a B.
One of the kindest and interesting professors Ive had at SCAD. Hes hilarious and has a great way of explaining things. We do read a lot and there are quizzes pretty often, but its manageable. Just put in the work and youll be fine. Ive always looked forward to going to his class.
He was By far one of the hardest professors I've had at scad period. He is extremely unrealistic with the amount of reading he had my class do for his foundations of story class. He is the toughest grader I've ever experienced. I make deans list every quarter I've been at scad almost and his class almost got me a D. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND EVER TAKING.
Literally said he didn't have time for me
I am taking English 123 currently, and somehow the professor managed to genderize the class, fail almost the whole class from the quizzes on the reading and the first essay, and show how much of a flaming liberal narcissist he admits he is. He is a harsh grader and never gives straight forward answers. Save yourself, don't pick him.
Every single day in his class was a political lecture From the beginning he stated himself as a Democrat, which I do not care what his views are. If you want a class that goes over grammar and has detailed lectures, don't take his class. We are told to read plays, some of which are 5 acts long, within a days time and expected to take a quiz on it.
Very rude person. Having him is the school's shame. Shows no respect to students, especially to Asians. He failed at least 20 of my asian friends. Never try to get any feedback from him. What he gives will never be helpful. He doesn't even read your essay if you are an asian. Teaches nothing during class. Oh, there's one. NEVER CHOOSE HIM.
Professor Randall is a true collage professor. He will not hold your hand and baby you. He treats and talks to everyone like adults which we all are, but for some children at scad he's too much. So if your a weeny who won't put in solid effort into the readings and essays for his class, you won't do well. Go to his extra help for essays, just do it
If youre an international student, NEVER TAKE HIS CLASS. He doesnt care if English is your second language because his standard is too high. If you cant really write an essay, hell tell you what to do but hell still give you a C. His extra help session doesnt help either. I still got a C even though I went to all of his extra help session.
He'll go off on political tangents more times than not, and he acts all astonished that no one know the specific MLA format he uses, despite it being based off the book he uses for the class which is outdated.
Professor Randall is maybe one of my favorite professors so far at SCAD. He is hilarious and the class is really relaxed and engaging. There is a lot of reading so prepare to read daily for his class but the books and plays are interesting and he explains them every day. I thoroughly enjoy and look forward to his class every time.
He teaches foundations of Story like a regular English class. Expect greek plays, one poem, quizzes, essays etc. He really likes talking about his personal experiences with the plays and encourages discussion, but he always corrects students interpretations of anything back to his own, and isnt open to anything new. Cares about students though.
Randal is gonna make you read a lot of books, but once you get through that he's a fun guy. He's really easygoing and down to earth, but he'll also take his class seriously and you can tell he's a proper professor. He'll also make some pretty out-there jokes, which is very welcome in what could be a stuffy and dry book reading class.
I was scared to take his class because of the negative reviews he received, but I ended up loving it a lot. I think people just didn't do the readings and blamed him for their consequently bad grades. Randall's straightforward and engaging, and I loved everything we read. Do the reading and take good notes, and you'll pass the class no problem.
Funny and nice guy but can be tough. The classes were slow especially at 5pm and he digresses often. We read so many short stories, plays, and poems, in addition to weekly vocab quizzes. Also four essays. Its a lot of work and hes a TOUGH essay grader. But you can do rewrites for the first two. Wouldnt recommend if youre looking for an easy A.
Im currently taking this class. Hes horrible. He gave us a 8 question quiz, told us to answer 5 of the 8.. I and three other students answered all the questions as we didnt think anything was wrong with answering more and he failed us three on the quiz for not answering JUST 5. He also gave almost all students an R which is an F on the essay
I understand why a lot of people don't like Randall. His expectations are extremely high and he is brutally honest, intimidating, and critical. Personally, he is one of my favorite professors. He is extremely intelligent, I find his lectures hilarious and engaging, and if you do the readings and know how to write a good essay you'll get an A.
Professor Randal is a very bad teacher. Relies on you knowing everything and the MLA format he uses is 13 years old. I do not recommend him in the slightest and if you do not know how to write well do not take his class or he will make fun of you for it. Rude and unprofessional
He is a very insightful person. Professor Randall knows a lot about what he is teaching and makes class discussions easy to participate in. I took his class online and he was very kind and understanding.
Dennis assigned a lot of reading to do before every class. It was a lot to do but you can find summaries online to help you. There are ten quizzes throughout the quarter that are very easy as long as you have a clue about the reading. There are four papers due during the quarter, 3 you hand in and 1 you write during the last class as the final.
Work load was not bad at all. The papers were only around 4 pages each and I had more than enough time to complete. The grading was just very tough. I wouldnt recommend him for this class. Unless you actually love English and writing and engaging in class
This was a good class I did well though I know some people who didn't do as well. He is a tough grader if you don't try. He can tell. I can tell he really hates online learning but since classes will be on ground I definitely recommend. Even with online we is a great funny professor.
Just be sure you do what he tells you and put effort into it, as long as you do that youll pass. We had 9 discussion posts and 4 essays, 1 of which we had to do in class. Overall wasnt too hard, and made some pretty funny comments. Although, hes the type of professor that will respect your opinion but then tell you that youre wrong.
Randall was the worst teacher I've had in a pretty long time. His classes are all lectures and he doesn't welcome any student feedback. If you try to add to a discussion he'll most likely interrupt you then change the topic. He cares more about MLA than writing, and refuses to actually teach how to write. He gave me 80s on everything w/o feedback.
I don't usually do reviews like this , but I felt like I needed to tell other people to NEVER take this professor. For our midterm we had to write two 5 page papers on Greek Literature with in-text citations in 2 1/2 hours. He didn't give us the questions until the night before the exam. Did not feel prepared at all! Don't take this professor.
Prof Randall likes to rant for the entire class period, usually in a fairly angry manner. You have to do a ton of reading outside of class, and most of the time the only grades you get come from daily character quizzes. The essay tests consisted of 2 essays, at least 5 pages each and were very stressful for everyone. Just don’t take it!
He taught us almost nothing about writing essays. TERRIBLE for students whose first language is not English. However, easy workload, only 4 essays & weekly discussion posts & we could write our essays about anything. No clear expectations. Unhelpful and rude. We had a few interesting discussions in class but they did not help with the assignments.
