remeber heart heart health and the determinance of health...poverty = poor health...you'll kick ass
really enjoyed his lectures! he tries to make course material relevent to students' lives and current events which made concepts easier to understand. assignments were very clear and fairly easy to do well on if you went to class and did the readings. recommend his course 100%!
Hes really nice... laid back and makes fun of the conservatives LOL
By far the best professor I have ever had! SDOH is a phenomenal course.
Compare to the proffesors I had the past few years, my experience with Denis Rapheal was extremely instrumental. He is one of a kind. Once you leave his class, you feel obligated to do somethig. He is an old man, but I got to give, he has a way with getting to students. His words, teachings, the class atmosphere is phenomenon.
His lectures are organized in a way, we can understand and participate. Very instrumental, straight-forward and up to date. However, watch out for the marks. He does have his favourites, so it's best to suck p to him at the start of the course.
he's reallly interesting and funny! and his new yorker accent is adorable : ) overall, amazing proff.
cool prof.
BY FAR THE BEST PROFF I EVER HAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!TOO BAD IM NOT IN HEALTH STUDIES OR I WOULD HAVE BEEN TAKING ALL OF HIS CLASSES!!!!
This prof is absolutley awesome! Had him twice & would love to take his class again. Very funny, knowledgable and willing to help at no costs. Take his classes!
It is clear that Dennis is driven to make changes in our society's health. While his passion and knowledge are admirable, I found his cynical attitude exhausting and uninspiring. Would NOT recommend this class - far too heavy of a workload; he loves to scare his students with how difficult his exams are; gives answers to exam during breaks:(
I have taken two of his courses and have enjoyed both very much. If you have a passion for social justice take his courses...I would love to take more but most of his courses are only worth 3 credits
Good professor and nice guy. Lectures are interesting. Readings not so much. I did not like his CONSTANT bash on anything not NDP. Poverty and the issues that surround it is not the ONLY issue to make me vote a certain way (and yes I do vote). I personally prefer classes where they explore all sides, where the other side isnt ALL negative.
Great prof. Lectures are so long however. Makes lectures interesting though.
An enthusiastic prof for social justice. His materials are clear and students are expected to do their job and study. Sometimes he could perhaps position himself better in controversial policy issues. Overall an excellent professor.
This class isn't overly hard, the assignments are resonable and the T.A's are helpful. This class isn't boring either and the textbook is something you have to have b/c he referrs to it alot and the exam is based off of it as well. However the prof tends to ramble on and talks about his life alot. He says alot but teaches very little.
great lecture prof, easy to follow, current in the news and relevant topics
nice person overall. tends to ramble about his life..a lot. the movies that he shows in class are essential for exam, take notes on them. exam is purely based on book + movie questions. read the book 2-3 times and you'll get an easy A for the exam and overall course. Do well on the essay+ summaries+other assignment. they're a big part of your mark.
Awesome professor. Interesting to listen to. Reasonable expectations from students. Very approachable, friendly, and helpful. I would definitely recommend any course of his!
Best prof I have ever had. Content is clear and mostly straight forward. Very passionate about the subject and up to date on content. Likes to talk about his life a lot. Exams and papers are based on the text book. Attend class because videos shown are worth about 30% of the exam, but are easy if you attended class. Def recommend taking SDOH
HEs one of the best profs i hae this year hes very funny and very helpful, he loves to talk about his ear growth and loves to show flims in the course as well very easy going guy... i would totally recomend u to take his classes :D
PRO: passionate about subject, up to date with events, lectures try to relate theory to the world, interesting videos, interesting theory, inclass videos are 25% of exam CON: dense theory, sometimes repetitive in class, long/difficult exam, lots of reading, exam heavily based on book
one of my best prof i ever had at york u. He teach really well and he mark the essay, summary really easy. getting a good mark in his class is really easy. i would want to have him as my prof in my 2 year tooo :)
To do well in this class- READ THE TEXTBOOK and attend class to watch videos and you are set for this course. Refer to the text whenever possible. However, the prof is not very approachable - assumes hes funny but rude and likes to put people on the spot. Regardless, easy course if you're up to attend class and keep up with the textbook.
good prof. In order to do well read the book. Dont wait till last minute to read it. Hates quotations in essays. Overall good prof. I dont appreciate his conservative party bashing.
Great Prof. I would love to take another course with him. He is quite vague in terms of "what you need to know"--heavy heavy textbook reference on the final exam. Concentrate on what he emphases in class and go back, read and reread the textbook.
If you got a D in this course you must be really dense.
He is honestly one of the best profs i have ever had. His lectures, boring at times, are full of rich and vital information. However, if you are taking this course as an elective. DON'T! I had more work in this class than my 9 credit course. The final exam was also quite challenging. The class average was 56.8%.
This class was unnecessarily difficult. I'm a third year psych student and I took intro to health as an elective but found I had to do more work than in some of my 6 or 9 credit classes. The textbook is written for graduate level comprehension and you are expected to have read it at least twice through to be able to score high.
Dr. Raphael is not an easy professor. He is however quite fair. Dr. Raphael is passionate about what he believes in and honestly the best professors you're going to have in University are the ones who are very passionate about teaching students. Attendance in his class is mandatory, he tests on material from class. Read the textbook twice.
I really enjoyed the course and Prof Raphael made the content interesting. The textbook is needed in order to compete multiple assignments and the exam.
the material was very good and he knows the subject very well. however i was in his tutorial and we did NOTHING ,other tutorials for the same class would get practise tests and we did not. he also let us go early all the time so the tutorial felt useless sometimes.
Extremely passionate about his field in general. Very nice sweet man. Always willing to help. Only downfall is he wrote the textbook so he expects you to know absolutely everything. And having only essays and multiple choice tests it is tough. This is the one course I actually found interesting and learned a lot. Lots of movies too.
Firstly, I highly recommend the course! This prof is amazing, he is very knowledgable, is passionate about what he is teaching, and has a way of lecturing that isn't boring. He is opinionated and will impose his ideas on your, but he is so experienced and in the field for so long that I didn't mind that.
This was a surprisingly interesting and enlightening class. Dr. Raphael is very opinionated and open with his political views. While this was slightly off-putting at times, you really do learn a lot without realizing. HEAVY textbook use, but everything is explained extremely well. Surprisingly good course. Read the book + do all assignments =Easy A
As a mandatory course I found the overwhelming amount of content somewhat interesting. Students must read his textbook not powerpoint slides or their notes to pass the final exam with a decent grade. I was unfortunate as my TA was clueless and not much help during the course. If you really want to do well connect with the Professor get to know him.
This course is rely heavily on textbook, As long you go through textbook and understand the concept, you should be fine. However when I went to visit the professor, if you are not in his tutorial, he is NOT Helpful at all, he was very rude to me. The course itself covers social determinants of health and inequity through health care.
This course is for people who loves to read and don't mind fighting to get there grades. It depends heavily on the textbook especially if you want a good grade on the finals. Prepare to complete at least three essay type papers which are generally close to each other. The tutorial mostly go over what would be due on each of your papers.
Probably the only class that I don't need coffee to stay up. Amazing lectures. Not a bird course though, you must work for your grades.
Classes sometimes may feel dragged on. Tutorials aren't essentially helpful. Must read the textbook to understand and do well in the course!
Content was pretty straight forward. Need the textbook to pass since a lot of the work is based on the information in that. However, if you do not have him as your TA you won't find yourself getting proper grades. My TA was not helpful at all, she gave everyone low marks and would confuse everyone about what needed to be done for the assignments.
HLST 1010 is a good introduction to several aspects related to health studies. The professor is very passionate about the material. My TA was really hard and wasn't clear on what she wanted, thus its best if you have the prof as your TA. The textbook is a must and you do have to work hard for your grades.
tbh just read his book
Very funny professor and really understands what he is lecturing about. He gave the whole class extra credit if we wrote a small opinionated paragraph about a funny article. His lectures can get boring but 100% of the exam is based on the textbook, going to class is just an extra. He shows a lot of online content to us to help clarify his point.
Professor Raphael is one of the best professors that I've ever had. You should attend the classes, because he always gives hints on what will be on the final exam or should be written on your papers. Bonus marks for those who write short essays on some articles he shows in class. I highly recommend this course as an alternative for HLST 3010.
Textbook is written by him and it was actually very interesting. If you don't read the textbook you will not do well on the final exam. A lot of people didn't read it because the average I believe was really low, in the 50s. Having a good TA is a must, because 70% of the other course assignments are marked by them. One final exam was 30%, all MC
I love this guy. The stuff he teaches is very enlightening and interesting. I never really got bored in his lectures either, he shows a good variation of videos, articles, and slides. Everything connects well!
Dennis Raphael is a good professor, knows a lot of what he's saying. It's very important to pay attention in class, he sometimes says that certain things will be on the final exam, so take note of that! DO the weekly reading responses, it'll help you prepare for the exam and it's easy marks.
This is the best course I have taken at York! Everybody should take this course. I gained so much knowledge from it.
If you don't like this professor, you're in the wrong field.
A very eye opening and interesting course. However the exam will be m/c, all based on the textbook. He stresses himself to read the book a few times. Try to do your best on the essay draft, essay, reflection and hand in all your weekly summaries so you aren't too dependent on the exam for a good mark.
attend your tutorials and learn how to write a paper. straight forward course but i don't feel like i learned much from 1010 and 1011.
Very passionate about the material he teaches - show up to lectures and take notes and you will be FINE. The exam was VERY specific so pay attention to EVERY detail. Also reading the book is a MUST!!
This Professor is very passionate about the social determinants of health, which shows in his lectures. His lectures are insightful and not boring in the slightest. Proper fellow he is :)
Great professor! His lectures are interesting, and he's very passionate about the topics he discusses.
HLST 1010 was a good course. It consisted of giving in weekly summaries, 2 major writing assignments during the semester, and one final exam that was entirely based on the textbook. Highly recommended with Raphael. Learned interesting information and ended off with a great mark.
One of the best profs at York! Dr. Raphael really knows his stuff. If you go to class, read the textbook, and participate in tutorials its easy to get A in his class.
Learnt a lot from him, so much more than I expected. He sometimes give bonus mark assignments, so go to class. Textbook he wrote is basically THE course material. Exam was hard but if you do your works throughout the course, it's fair.
Good prof, the lectures were personally interesting but you don't need to attend them to pass, but you MUST attend tutorial and read the textbook. everything comes from the textbook. Dennis is an interesting guy, a little corky but definitely passionate about what he does
Dennis is very boring and makes it hard to have slides to go off of. All the lectures just have graphs that have no extra information. All his assignments just want you to sing his praises by reading his work over and over.
Pay attention to the readings, his lectures, & THE VIDEOS that will benefit you when you do 2 short papers and a Term Paper. He can revise your grade/s on your papers if you can bring up good judgment towards SDOH and text/course materials you used. He's not playing around during exam season with his 150 MCs. Also, he's bad at emails.
He is very inconsiderate, and his exam is really tough based upon HIS textbook that is over 600pages
The professor takes his course seriously and provides an opportunity for students to shine. He gives opportunities for extra credit after the class break but unfortunately 70% of the students never get the opportunity since they skip out during the break. The big paper and exam is based on text and class so READ text and ATTEND class!
He is one of the worst professors I've had at York. His lectures are just charts and graphs from his textbook. There is no reason to go to class EXCEPT to hand in weekly summary paper copies. You are expected to purchase his book and read EVERYTHING. I've messaged him 5x and never once did he respond because he didn't add my summary and bonus paper
Worst course I have ever taken. Dennis lectures are just pictures from his text that he drones on and on about. Hard to follow along. So much writing
His lectures are Eurocentric, Europe is better at this, Europe is better at that, Europe is doing this right. But no lecture about European colonialism and how that is a threat to social determinants of health.
lectures are long and boring. He's not too hard of a marker.
There are 2 papers that were worth 10% each. He assigns one major essay & exam that are both worth 35%, but, he doesnt give feedback on the two previous papers? His exam is very difficult considering that his powerpoints are charts. He has written his own textbook for the class & expects you to know everything. Overall, I would avoid him.
Dennis is passionate about what he teaches, but he expects students to memorize everything in the textbook provided, including statistics for the exam. The final was based on 24 chapters of the book, as well as videos/movies shown in the lecture. When you email him, his response is only five words even if you write him a full paragraph (rude).
There are two short papers and one long one(research paper). An A IS VERY ACHEIVABLE FOR THESE, but YOU need to read the book and understand the concepts. He's a fair marker when it comes to this. The final exam is brutal and very unrealistic as his questions(mc) are not from lectures or the book. You can go from having an A+ to a B real quick.
Although Professor Raphael teaches the material well, he's an average instructor. He's clearly passionate about the social determinants of health, but his exams are very dense, it includes everything in the lectures and the textbook.
If you can avoid Prof. Raphael, DO IT. His textbook is extremely repetitive and boring but all of the assignments and the test are heavily based on it. His exam was also incredibly difficult. 150 mc in 3.5 hours is completely unrealistic and quite frankly cruel. I was burnt out by the 70th question.
This is the best cause I have ever taken at York University. It provides real insights into the living and working conditions of many people, including University students. This class has changed my whole way of thinking about things like poverty and ways to make our country better. Highly recommended. Entertaining lectures. World renowned author
This prof was very inspirational and passionate about the SDOH. It truly was an excellent course until the exam. I was getting an A until the exam, which was one of the most difficult exams I have ever written. Unless you have a photographic memory you will not do well. It was a shame as I truly enjoyed everything else about this course.
His course has 2 short papers (3 pgs, 1.5 spaced), 1 long paper (10 pgs, 1.5 spaced) and then one 150 MC exam. The papers weren't difficult as they were mostly based on the readings, HOWEVER the exam was BRUTAL! As it was mostly textbook based... Brought my mark from an A straight to a B+
extremely boring lectures but if you don't attend them ur basically asking to fail. you cannot learn from his slides they are just charts and read read read the book because the exam basically has you cite the whole thing through mc
Raphael is tough, I recommend you always do 1.5 spacing and stay within the same pg limit, as he would give you a lower grade or even a failing grade if you don't do so!!!! I would avoid him as much as possible. Terrible teaching style, very boring, unrealistic, READ, and BUY THE BOOK
I enjoyed the class. The professor is very passionate about the topic. Lots of reading, but its important as the textbook is what the assignments and exam are based on. Make sure to attend lecture. The final exam is very heavy, with ALOT of data to memorize. The final droped my grade from an A+ to an A.
To do well in this course you need to listen to his instructions of what he expects from you on the first day. His lectures may be long and slow, but worth going to if you want to do good - very insightful, however I found that this class was quantity over quality, with a 150 mc exam, 1.5 spacing in papers, seems designed to bring grades down.
The course was actually really interesting and not as hard as others are saying it is below! Just attend class and read the text!
Classes were actually quite interesting! You will have to put in a lot of work in his class. Exam is tough but much better if you attend class and read the textbook (most important).
If you want anything higher than a B, DO NOT SKIP LECTURES OR READINGS. His textbook and lectures are integral to your success in the course. He marks easy for the weekly chapter summaries and midterm/final papers, but you need to know your stuff for the exam! The exam questions were mostly reasonable if you did the readings and attended class.
The professor is boring, and his lectures are extremely slow. They mainly consist of him talking, showing charts and graphs, and playing videos. He's also a tough grader and expects you to memorize all 600 pages of his textbook for the 150 question multiple choice final exam, which most of the class failed.
His exams are too hard
His exam was brutal. He expects you to remember random percentages from his almost 700-page book and the names of people you saw in the videos in class.
read the textbook. the exam was so difficult for this course it was compiled of small details from the textbook (The prof wrote the book). overall he was a genuine prof who cared alot, go to the lectures as often he gives hints about exam questions.
just talks alot during lectures, he expects u to buy the textbook which is his own book and memorize random statistics for the finals exam. the exam is brutal
Dr. Raphael demonstrated strong knowledge of the subject and always took the time to clarify difficult material. He was very respectful, approachable, and responsive to student needs. I felt valued in his class and learned a lot thanks to his teaching.
To do well in the course and final exam you need to attend the lectures and read the textbook. The professor is very kind and knowledgeable, I would take another course with him.
