Watch out for this 1.Jumps around in thought every 2 secs. Gives you 1 criteria, marks you on another. If you want to drop your GPA take this course.Appeal grade if something 'seems wrong'. Power tripper. Also 3hrs & 2mins bathroom break.Good luck.
Very organised, good sense of humour, Lots of field experience and has a lot of slides.
Avoid! Doesn't tell you what to write and won't provide grading criteria/clear instructions before the assignment is handed in. Assumes you got his "hints" throughout lectures even if syllabus says otherwise. Nice enough and can be helpful but marking alone makes it annoying. Lectures with back to the class and doesn't focusonimportanttopics
have a care about this one and be very very careful. he says one thing when describing assignments but then flip flops. okay too look at but attractiveness can go only so far!

this is an easy class! only thing is lecture is a must-attend as everything on midterm/final is directly from what he SAYS in lecture because he doesn't write anything. Midterm average was 32/40! def. a gpa booster.
I don't know what the others are saying, this class is extremely boring!! Unless you like science stuff, take this course, but if you just taking this to fulfill your B-sci course then be prepared for monotone teaching, spending ages on slides that have basically nothing on it, and I should mention he has lots of slides! Also we don't use text book
This class is really easy. All you have to do is memerize the notes until your head hurts and you'll get an A or B. I'm not smart and I'm getting an A. Another thing is that he doesn't use the text.
Like all other Archeology classes, this one was equally boring and easy.
this course was very easy AND interesting. He discussed alot of social issues associated with evolution. must attend lecture and must take notes on what he says. dont buy the text - not worth it.
Passionate about his job, Prof Sandgathe made anthropology my favorite class bar none! A down-to-earth prof with a great attitude who makes ancient man fun...take his class and find out for yourself! You will NOT be disappointed.
Dennis is a great professor. He knows his stuff and is easy to understand. He lives and breaths this stuff and is very enthusiastic when he teaches. No falling asleep in this class. Final exam was a bit of a miss as to what we thought would be emphasized but all in all there was nothing on there that was a surprise. Fair and good humoured
Amazing slides, tons of info. Very knowledgeable. He studies Neanderthals in the summer. cute too.
Dennis is great ! very knowledgeable, lots to learn jus for fun ! textbook is not really needed, bases MT's / final on ppts; he makes funny jokes too
Textbook is not needed at all. Just attend lecture and understand the PPTs. However, the boring lectures will reduce one beyond tears.
Attend class! His notes are helpful, but to fully understand them you need to hear what he says in class and write it down.
HE IS ADORABLE!! such a muffin :)super nice, and very knowledgeable about his stuff. def take this class, you will not be disappointed!
Course content really interesting; a LOT to learn though! Not just memorization, but also application and problem solving. Not necessarily a GPA booster, there weren't a remarkable # of As. Fair grade breakdown. Online lectures mind-numbingly boring. A fair way to get your B-Sci credit, but don't think you won't work for it.
His lectures are crystal clear and conveys the message very effectively. His note well organized and one could do well by just looking at his notes. His exams are fair sometimes a bit on the harder side. This course that all majors have something they could relate to. Overall great prof and interesting course.
This prof is awesome!!! I had an 80% average before the final paper and exam (50% of the course - I took the dist Ed). But, I couldn't hand in the paper or study for the final cause I found out my grandfather has cancer. I figured that I would fail for not handing in my paper, but I got a C-!! He is supportive of students going through rough times
I took this class through distance ed to get my science credit...Prior to taking this class I heard that Archeology 131 had too much information. As a result I studied well, and did pretty well in my overall grade. If you put effort into it, and study well you should be able to do great.
Dennis is a fantastic prof! He presents information clearly and tries to keep things interesting. I thought his exams were very fair, and it wasn't hard to do well so long as you attended class. I took this class for my B-Sci credit and was happy to know that I learned some interesting things in the process. :)
You MUST go to class and write down EVERYTHING he says as it is not in the powerpoint slides he provides. You don't need the textbook. The exams test you on only lecture content. SUPER EASY, however, it is also easy to screw up since there are only 3 exams determining you mark.
Professor Sandgathe was a very enthusiastic lecturer who clearly had a passion for his subject. He offers his lectures note online but the slides are not nearly as complete as going to his classes. He always makes sure students understand the notes and concepts so his lectures are clear.
FANTASTIC and very passionate professor! This class is VERY easy as long as you ATTEND and TAKE NOTES! People failed the exams because they relied on his powerpoint slides which don't include the details. You don't need the text. The exams are very basic; I took good notes, studied for a day before each exam, and ended up with an easy A+. :)
Interesting content presented in a most UNinteresting way makes for a very slow, boring, and painful class. He uses slides, but tests based on info explained in lecture, so attendance (and attention) is mandatory. Be thorough in test essay answers as he expects more than what the question asks.
Don't buy the textbook, just go to class, take good notes and you'll do well. Exams are fair and lecture recordings are posted online. I barely went to class and still managed to do well.
Awesome prof!! Very enthusiastic about content and encourages questions! Pay attention and take good notes and the class is a breeze! :)
He is the most adorable prof ever! He loves his job and the subject matter so much and it's obvious. There was always a discussion going in class. Really funny and so sweet and kind to students. Notes and subject matter easy, tests really hard, you have to really study. Don't buy the textbook. He reminded me of Ross from Friends.
Great professor, extremely well organized, very helpful and available, very knowledgable, direct knowledge of the field as he does excavation and publishes on the topic. Super nice but not a pushover, expect to get back what you put into it.
Great prof! He loves what he is teaching which makes the content very interesting. I found the exams kind of difficult; the last two were only multiple choice and the questions are very specific, but I still LOVED the class and definately want to have Dennis as my prof again in the future.
Best Professor ever! :) I actually enjoyed learning about human origins. You will get A if you attend the class and take really good notes. Text book might be helpful but not necessarily needed. He makes the lecture very interesting. Loved it !
I actually don't really like taking this class. The contents are not so interesting and he speaks quite fast and softly. His lectures are too basic posted online so make sure you do take notes in class otherwise you won't be able to do the exams well.
Sweetest prof ever! Very interested in what he's teaching. Course material is interesting. PLEASE don't buy the textbook. Go to lecture and write everything down and then go home and listen to the lecture again and make sure it's engrained in your brian. Write more notes than what is on the powerpoint slides. Exams are pretty easy.
Amazing prof! His human origins class is the most interesting one I have taken so far in my SFU career. He is really easy to listen to and understand and he has a great sense of humor that he incorporates into lecture. A definite must take class!
Excellent prof, really knowledgeable about the subject and I enjoyed taking this class with him. Be sure to take good notes in class and you will do fine!
The course material was very boring but Dennis just makes everything so much more enjoyable. He is indefinitely the most friendly and admirable prof i have ever had. I would highly recommend taking any courses with him and especially if you need some science credits. Also, I underestimated the difficulty of his final exam so study hard for it :D
Dennis is a nice enough guy who you can tell absolutely cares about teaching, and is very intelligent. However, I felt like his lectures were a bit unorganized and he always tested on the most random stuff. Not to mention, 50 mark essay for a final without even showing up to the final? What is that about? I would recommend though for an Easy A-/B+
He's a great prof; a clear expert in his field. His slides are very organized but somewhat vague so take good notes in class. He talks fast though. Occasionally throws in trick questions from the book but overall, the book's not worth buying. Downside is we never got any written assignments during term but he surprised us with an essay on the final
Took both his intersessions courses Arch100 and 131. Great Prof, cares about all his students and always takes time to encourage to ask questions. Very knowledgable in his field, and has a great sense of humour. Textbook not really mandatory, but listen to his lecture and take down good notes since his Q's on MT and Exams are on it. Love this Prof
Such a simple class. Sure there seems to be a lot of info but if you put a little work into studying you'll do great! Go to class, take notes, and have an easy time on the exams. His midterm took me about 5 mins (all multiple choice) and final took about an hour (MC with an essay). He's also a great lecturer
Very easy and understandable prof. His slides are great and the information is clear. 10/10 would take course again.
whew! weekly discussion posts & replies + study questions due every week. but other than that, it's only a final paper & exam. as long as you do the discussions & questions you're guaranteed a pass. the last 50% of your grade depends on your exam (which is HARD!!) & your paper- so try to write a good paper & there's not too much pressure ;)
Took this class online. Lecture were posted online as were easy to follow, and weekly study questions and open discussion questions were also straightforward. Final was pretty easy as well. Overall, good prof, a really interesting class and a GPA booster!
One of the best courses I have ever taken. Very interesting content and topics. Course is relatively easy. If you put the effort in you can easily get an A.
Favourite prof! Very interesting and engaging. Don't bother with the textbook, but attend class as everything on midterms and final is info given in class. Easy A with some effort
knows his stuff very well. But, way too much information, and he doesn't really let you know what you have to know. Okay class
Good lecturer and very good sense of humour. He is a very intelligent, cute prof! He makes the boring content relatively interesting. Exams are based on his lectures so you have to listen carefully.
picture perfect university prof. Lectures can be dry sometimes but easy course load. Exams weren't too bad and has a good sense of humour but not the most exciting class especially if your just fulfilling a breadth requirement
Really good prof, easily approachable, email the ta's if you need help youll get a faster reponse, midterms and final mainly from slides. Overall a really good prof
Super awesome prof. Easy on the eyes too. The material can be dry but he makes it interesting. You don't really need to read the textbook at all, just the lecture notes and listen really well to him. The exams tend to focus on the small details so make sure you know your stuff. Overall great class and prof.
Good teacher overall, but tends to go overtime (not in a good way). His lectures seemed 'dry',I just couldn't process the information he was trying to teach; lectures became a little overwhelming.Tried paying attention, but only thing that brought me back to focus was probably when you heard ppl laugh at his jokes yet not 'interesting' information.
Sandgathe is a very good proff. My friends and I took his class as an elective, we are first year students. We are all in Beedie, luckily all of us walked out of his class with A's. You just need to make sure you attend every single lecture, and write detailed notes. Overall, if you are a memorizer, you will do good.
I took 131 with Dennis and loved the class and him so much that I could't wait to take this special topics class. However it was unfortunately not a very good class. He was quite disorganized and his exams were very difficult. He marked hard on the essay as well. I'd recommend him for Arch 131 but I do not think he organized this class very well.
Good class to take in first year! Barely any work to do except for studying of the midterm and final. He is clearly passionate about what he's teaching and is very knowledgable. The exams are very fair! Although long classes, it is only once a week, no tutorial and no additional reading. DON'T BUT THE TEXTBOOK.
He was very passionate about the subject matter. Made it worth taking. Archaeology is not my major or minor, I took it for the science credit and he made it completely painless.
Hilarious, adorable, and a great public speaker. Make sure to attend lectures and take notes.
A LOT OF material, and I mean seriously. So many things to memorize, especially place names along with scientific names of human ancestors... Yeah, there's no other assignments, but the tests are pretty hard. He asks a lot about little things that are easily forgettable. Still liked the class and the prof though
He is a nice guy, but very hard to get help and talk to him. Do not buy a textbook it is not needed. Lots to memorize.
Dennis is great, funny, & clear. He does a good job providing info & there is alot of info so be ready to write. No work required for the class except study for midterm& final. Studymemorize everything,Nothing is a small detail, it all matters. Make cue cards each week its very helpful. Don't buy the textbooks, lecture is most important for info
He is a passionate prof and a really nice guy. If you are someone who does well with memorization rather than conceptualization, this course is for you. Basically all facts. ATTEND his lectures! Or get someone reliable to send you good notes because his slides are mostly pictures and he usually says all the information. 1 midterm 1 final all MC
Very passionate and knowledgeable about the course. Just a lot of concepts, bones to memorize. Was a little hard to focus because he's extremely handsome, with a nice big butt; honestly I could not focus half the time; my grade definitely suffered cause of it. But overall good class.
Took as science breadth. Great lecturer and super passionate about the material. There are 2 exams so you have to put in effort twice in the term. With that being said the mc on the final was absolutely ridiculous. Tests you on insignificant little details so study the fossil on the slide that seems extremely irrelevant
He's the best!!! So sweet and a genuinely nice person who loves his work. Easily one of my favourite profs. Super easy to engage in this class because his passion just shines through (as cheesy as it sounds) and makes you want to learn. Adds a few jokes here and there too. Would recommend to all who can put in some effort to memorizing facts
The man! the myth! the legend! This class is essenttial a GPA booster .. although it does require for you have Good notes. The midterm was a breezee.. but you have to study for it! Make good notes, about everything even the little fine details. Final wasn't to bad either.. their is an essay question! Study all hypotheses.. thank me later.
Dennis is indeed my favourite professor at SFU! Took this course to fulfill my wqb requirements but it was one of the most amazing courses I have taken. Btw lectures are recorded, so there is no need to attend them all the time. You do not need to read the book cause midtermfinal covers only his lecture materials. Final is pretty straight forward.
DO NOT SKIP CLASS. You must take good notes to get a decent grade. If you cannot make it, listen to the audio recording and take notes. Write down what he says during the lecture, they are important and testable. Midterm was easy, as well as final. By the way, you don't need textbooks.
Lectures are very long, but he is a funny professor and he makes sure you understand the topics. Fair grading, encourages questions. The only class I didn't miss a single lecture, not because I couldn't, but because I didn't want to.
I went to the first class of the semester and never returned. I only listened to the recorded lectures and looked at the slides. Overall the material is very dry and boring, but he is a good lecturer. His exams are not difficult and are fair. I never bought the textbook and only a couple MC questions from textbook were on the exams.
Took this class for the science credit and I really enjoyed it. It was nice only having a midterm and a final - that being said, even though I studied like crazy for both, I ended this class with a C. Exams test the very small details so take detailed notes. Textbook not necessary for this class.
I took this class as an elective but it ended up being my favourite for the semester. Very good at lecturing . Plus it was nice only having a midterm and a final . Textbook not necessary for this class - study lecture slides including the small details.
Dennis is a great prof. He's super likable and adds humor when he can. The course can be a bit dry at times but there is a lot of interesting content in there as well. The entire mark for this course was based on the midterm and final, both were multiple choice. Super easy to pass and to do well you just need to study.
A great professor. The material could get super boring, but he tried to keep it interesting. Midterm was all M/C, and final was M/C with an essay. Studying the lecture notes is essential to passing - textbook not necessary at all. Would recommend this course to anyone needing the breadth requirement.
Dennis is a great proff. I took this course as a science elective and he made it one of my favourite courses. Even though he records his lectures and posts them online, he made me want to go to the lectures. He only tests what he covers in his lectures, so you do not need the textbook.
Don't bother going to lectures if there are recordings. As others have said, study every little detail. The best way to do this is listen to his audio recordings and type everything he says. Midterm was true/false,matching, and multiple choice. Asks very TRICKY questions in order to fool you, so be careful. Put in effort 2 times a semester
Lectures are very long and dry, luckily they are recorded. Textbook is somewhat necessary as he has 2-3 questions on every test that comes directly from the book. Study well and take good notes. If you can do these two things, this course is an easy A.
Easy class. Clear lectures, follow slides and you will do well.
Easy high marks if you do listen to lecture recordings available online and take some notes. There are very few supplementary readings on the textbook he would test on but you don't need it unless you want a VERY good mark. Only MCs and true/false on midterm, the final has one more essay question. Lectures are long but interesting enough. Love him!
I expected a lot more from this class. Prof was okay, funny at times, but overall the lectures were really long/dry and it was difficult to process and organize the content. This course could be so awesome, but it needs to be more conducive to learning and engagement. Prof provided very little exam guidance.
His midterm is all multiple choice & matching, and his final has some multiple choice and an essay. The essay comes from lecture material and readings from the textbook. I decided to write my essay off of the textbook reading because it seemed easier to me. Make sure you take good notes and review before the exams. Exams are non-cumulative.
Dennis is seriously an amazing lecturer! Although the content is very dry, he does his best to make it as interesting as possible. Lectures are posted but you must listen/attend lectures to do well. Midterm was all MC/TF/matching and final was the same but with an essay. Not cumulative. Fairly easy class imo as long as you put in the effort!
Dennis is a great prof, he knows his material REALLY WELL so take this if you're interested about the course content. However, his exams are made to trick you and some are bullocks. BUT, this course isn't hard, you just have to put in the time.
Dr. Sandgathe is a great lecturer and passionate about what he does. The course is what you would expect - study and make sure you understand the material and you will do well. He also inserts jokes into lectures when possible, and is very approachable. All in all great professor! Take a course with him if you can!
P4P best professor at SFU. His lectures are engaging and he makes the material a treat to learn. I studied so hard for this class and enjoyed every bit of it. I loved it so much that I wanted to change my major after, but I was too far into my degree. His research is also quite interesting. SFU should be proud to have him.
Even though the material is fairly dense, the class is well-structured so everything was pretty clear and easy to follow. Sandgathe is an excellent public speaker and his lectures were so fascinating I never wanted to miss a class!
Future tip do not take this class on distance ed. This was the worst class I have ever taken as an elective. Basically a mini essay every week which is worth 45% of your grade. With 14 questions of of 5 marks each, even the slightest mistake will make drastic impacts to your grade. Furthermore weekly discussions are long. No final is the only good.
He makes a 3 hr lecture on dead bones FUN. loved him and his lectures, never missed a class! He is super funny and nice, but the course content can be dry! He explains the details very well and all you gotta do is take notes from what he says! definitely one of the best profs at SFU.
I would recommend against taking DE for ARCH 131. The workload for this course is quite heavy; there are 14 study questions worth 5 marks each over the semester worth 45% of your grade and depending on the tutor marker you get, one small mistake in your answer could have a big impact on your mark.
Class is based on only a midterm and a final. 45%/55%. Although I think Sandgathe is an interesting enough lecturer, he has blatantly stated "don't worry about studying _______" and then ended up putting said topics on the midterm and final.
This class had potential to be one of the best classes in my undergrad... and simply by considering all of the things I learned it was. However, his exams take away FROM EVERYTHING this class had to offer. He tests on tiny details that make you think he simply doesn't want anyone to have 100%. In perspective, 90% was the highest grade on the MT...
Dennis tries to make his lectures interesting with a bit of humor and his own experience, but if you're not into the material at all, it won't help. His exam's require a lot of time to put aside and prepare for as you must essentially study the entire course, documentaries, and, sometimes, textbook exclusives.
He is an amazing prof. He is super knowledgable and gives amazing lectures. If u like Arch he is the prof u definitely want to take class with. I learned a lot from him. U don't need to buy the textbook as u won't use it at all. Just listen carefully to lecture recordings and memorize them and u'll get an A.
Dennis is an amazing professor; he has a true adoration for his field and for teaching. Teaching style is lecturing with supporting PowerPoints, which I found very easy to follow. Both PowerPoints and lecture recordings are posted online. He's very funny, a real personable guy. Make sure to read the textbook; the exams have obscure questions. Love!
Dennis' knowledge and passion really show through his lectures. However, because he is so experienced, a lot of the information he shares is not noteworthy. So if you're someone who just wants to hear the important stuff for an easy A, he isn't for you. You must attend lectures to do well in this class, but I don't recommend the textbook.
Even thought its 3 hours, the lecture wasn't dry and for most part, very interesting. The professor knows a lot about this field and is definitely caring about students, encouraging us to ask questions. He records his lecture so you don't need to worry about missing out. Just memorize your lecture notes and you'll be fine.
He's a great prof! His material and lectures are quite thick in info. The best advice is to study what he tells you as he is a very straightforward marker and is very open to opinions. He enjoys hearing good questions and will give you candy (only around halloween, of course) all in all, I hope to encounter him further throughout my degree.
Doesn't know what Bell curving is.
Dennis makes the class enjoyable even though it's a 3 hour class. The exams are fair but they are content heavy. essentially, show up to class ,take good notes and read the textbook and you are sure to get a decent grade.
Talks wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy to fast for my liking. Decided to use an interactive textbook this past term to get people to read it and boy did we. Worth 25% of our grade is this clunky online system Pearson bamboozled him into acquiring. Tests are not hard if you study.
He's very into the subject, so good to see, and he tries to make it fun. Sadly the material is very dry if you aren't into it and the 3h lecture dragged on, but he was clear that tests were lecture heavy, not textbook & he wants you to do well. Lectures are recorded. Slides posted. But I studied hard for midterm and was surprised at detail of Q's
Not entirely approachable to questions and was very vague about the online textbook assignments through revel. Most of the test information comes from lecture but all lectures are recorded and put online. Passionate speaker but material is boring if you are not interested.
Professor Sandgathe started used Revel for the Fall 2017 class, making the class more of an online class, which encourages students to skip lectures. Not a fan of this style of teaching. Midterms and exams, one of each, are worth up to 3 quarters of your grade, so you better know what you're doing. Not very engaging, lots of reading.
His classes are great to take a nap in. In all seriousness though, he's passionate about the course and wants his students to do well. Grades are based off of two midterms, so study each like your life depended on it!!!
This man is a living legend. Hes pretty funny (for his age and profession). He knows what hes talking about. Overall, excellent teaching skills. He knows how to grab your attention and keep you hooked and interested throughout 3 hour lectures. Hes the real MVP
Excellent professor. Fun and informative lectures. Material can be a bit overwhelming with memorization if you're not a "science brain" but he makes it surprisingly easy for anyone to understand. Peppers lectures with humour. Great use of slides that get posted on Canvas with a lot of photos which help you with your memorization. 10/10 prof
i loved his lectures. great use of slides. got more out of his class than the textbook, I didnt even have to use it because he explained everything well enough. will take him again for sure
no textbook, only ppt slides with mostly just pictures. requires you to pay attention to 3 hour lectures and type down all the historical facts and terms in order to study. hard to catch the main points he's talking about as he elaborates a lot and makes something simple rather confusing. simple details are however important and would be tested.
Made 3 hour lectures very bearable + engaging, and is extremely passionate about the material. His Powerpoints have little information but you HAVE to listen to the recordings while viewing them cuz he explains things well. I suggest going to class because it's easier to get info that way. Also was funny but the class I was in was very quiet.
Very nice and funny guy, but it was hard to focus at times just because the course content can be bland periodically. Dennis throws in the most obscure things from the course content on his midterms and finals, so study every last detail and you will be good.
He's the BEST. Took arch131 with him last semester and even though the concepts and content were boring he is very knowledgeable and up to date in the field. He makes a lot of nerdy jokes, sometimes hard to get. He made it much more easier to understand by recording lectures. Final exam was so-so , but he is very understanding and caring.
Dennis is a real g. His lectures are interesting and he is really nice. The only bad thing about his class is that it is a 45% midterm and a 55% final. He records all of his lectures so if you miss any classes you can listen to it online. Super interesting course, would definitely take a class with him again.
GREAT teacher and guy. Makes three hours go by fast (and gives us two breaks!). Sprinkles his engaging lectures with lovely dad jokes. EXCELLENT slides and lectures - so you don't NEED the textbook - and super TRICKY but fair exams. Unfortunate reliance on the midterm (45%) and the final (55%), but he's even generous with his marking and weighing.
Dennis was a wonderful prof, his lectures were engaging and he really did a great job at making a topic that I did not find particularly interesting to actually be engaging. The only downside to this class was the format of the REVEL online textbook, it was a bit of a hassle but was not directly due to Dennis, just the course. Would recommend him!
Really dry and long, content heavy lectures. Study hard for the midterm and final if you want a good grade. dont even bother showing up if you didnt study. tests are completely based on the lecture slides so dont even bother paying for the textbook.
Dennis is a fantastic prof. Has physically been to many the archaelogoy sites he teaches about and is super into the material. Lectures are a bit dry at first but get more interesting as the course goes on. Midterm and final exam are NOT CUMULATIVE so you can basically forget the first half of the semester after the midterm
This man is awesome. Lectures are really well structured. He is very experienced in his field (Neanderthals) and knows so much. Also very entertaining and funny as well as very approachable if you need help or just want to talk about whatever.
pretty chill guy. lectures all recorded online so no need to show up. no need to use the textbook his lectures are well done. just gotta memorize everything.
HE was a nice guy and tried his hardest to make a boring class interesting. Gave 2 breaks for a 3 hour class. Often ended class early. He records his lectures and posts them online so you don't need to show up. DO NOT BUY THE TEXTBOOK it is a waste I never used it once.
I signed up for the class thinking that it was only based off of lecture - psych - there's an online textbook worth $40 - $100. Great lectures, real interesting topics addressed. The midterm was worth 45% (m/c only), and the final was 55% (m/c + essay written) and that's it. He records his lectures and posts his slides - very helpful guy overall.
He's a great lecturer and extremely knowledgeable, you'll learn a lot from him. You absolutely need to be in class every day and take detailed notes, exams are straight from lectures. Exams are kinda tough but fair, no surprises. Dennis is a great guy, really funny and approachable. I recommend his class but be ready to put the work in.
Dennis is the best it gets. Entertaining, knows what hes talking about and makes class fun. Went to maybe 4 lectures all semester, listened to the recordings 3 days before exams and walked out with an A.
Dennis is the best prof Ive ever had so far in my three years at SFU! He is very funny and throws in tons of Lowkey jokes throughout lecture. He really cares about what he is teaching, and is open to any kinds of questions in class. Super nice guy outside of lecture too if you have any other questions. If you get the chance take a class with him!
Arguably one of the best profs at SFU. He knows that the lecture can get boring so there are lecture recordings you can listen to so its not really needed to show up for class. He is the most humble and outgoing prof. The TAs are also good and overall this is a guaranteed GPA booster if you aren't a total doofus
Lectures were recorded and posted online. Clear lectures. Very nice. Automatically gives you a bump on the final if you didn't do well on the mid term. Easy to get a hold of.
If a prof could be rated big p p he would. Solid prof pretty funny very fair marker. Lots of opportunity for improvement if you fall behind and thoughtful feedback on work that if taken seriously will reflect in your mark.
Never had an interaction with Dennis; the TA is the only one who connects with the class however, I did not try to reach him either. Weekly assignments and an essay. Not that difficult but will take up your time.
I have taken several courses with Dennis and every single one has been incredible (human origins, special topics course on neanderthals, and lithic technology to name a few). He is super passionate about what he teaches, and each course has been super rewarding
He only designs the course but he has managed to make it quite boring. The prerecorded lectures are just him reading off a script with no expression in his voice. The weekly assignments and paper are pretty dry but that may be more a result of the topics than him. However, you can tell he hasn't revised the online course in a while. Good TA though
Super basic course, only graded by 2 things a midterm and a final. Sandgathe and the TA is really nice, and everything is quite straightforward. Just listen to the recorded lectures, take notes, and that will all be tested on the exams. Course material is pretty interesting too. Overall not bad online
The reason why this class was so great was because of the TA, Simon Van Barneveld. He was always on top of answering questions through email (and provided an immense amount of information to help you). I reached out to Dennis too and he helped out a couple of times but Simon definitely made this course really fun, interesting, and engaging for me.
Professor Sandegathe and his TA, Earl, were very accessible despite being an asynchronous online class. Grading criteria was very clear and fair. Exams were based mostly on lecture material. He even bumped my grade at the end of the term! Overall, great prof and TA who really care about their students and the subject they teach.
I would not say this class was a GPA booster like most people say you most definitely had to work hard for your grade. The lectures are quite heavy and textbook reading is required for more depth understanding. The TA was always available and accessible. Test/ final straightforward as long as you studied. Memorization is definately key.
I was blown away by the amount of work this class gave since it is 100 level. everything was a written assignment, no tests, but this was not a W course. I felt like the grading criteria were unclear but very specific, and each week is 6% of your grade. It is clear he is knowledgeable and respected, but this class was incredibly frustrating for me.
A lot of people say ARCH131 is a GPA booster, but it was a difficult course for me. Super interesting content, but lots of reading and lecture material. Dennis did keep the course engaging though!
I am still a little put off how Dennis did not do any meeting activities at the start of the semester. ARCH272 had around 25 students in the class (small) and never once did he initiate meeting each other or getting to know each other. Made it VERY awkward the whole semester. Never tried to know our names. Super strange to me. Exams are all writing
Dennis is one of the most helpful professors I have ever had and I have been in school for a long time. He is kind, funny, respectful, and clearly passionate about the course content. I have taken both 131 and 272 with him and whenever I reached out in both courses he went out of his way to help me out.
Lectures are very easy to follow and full of interesting content. Exams are very related to the lectures and are easy to guess what the main points are for the essay questions.I didn't find a lot of need for the textbook other than supplementary knowledge. Assignments were also straightforward and always found him available for questions.
Dr. Sandgathe is a great prof! I thoroughly enjoyed ARCH131 with him & hope that I'll have more courses with him in the future. Final grades were determined only by the midterm & final, if that bothers you, but neither was too hard at all! He keeps the lectures super interesting & definitely cares about his students & their learning.
If you need an elective I definitely recommend ARCH 131 with Prof Sandgathe. The course is only graded on the midterm and final so it's super low maintenance and the exams are pretty straightforward. Class attendance isn't mandatory as lecture recordings are uploaded to canvas. Not to mention the content is interesting and prof is just a nice guy.
You better hope that you love evolution, primates and hominins, otherwise this will be the most unpleasant elective you have ever taken. Took this as a Bsci to graduate, and its 6 weeks of Monke, Monke, Monke, and Monke until you hope you never have to learn about Monke ever again. Exams involve memorizing every tiny detail. You've been warned.
Took this as intersession and it was the most disorganized class I've taken. Prof, syllabus, module "required readings", and TA's all contradicted each other in terms of required readings and testable material. Very unclear expectations and constant changes to syllabus throughout the 6 weeks. In a compressed format this is extremely frustrating.
The quizzes and exams for this class test on the most specific information that was not even covered in lecture or the 100's of pages of readings. The 3 TA's for this class basically gave up on answering questions in the Q&A thread. Important questions often go unanswered, constant changes to syllabus, lecture videos don't work. What a nightmare.
You are probably considering whether to take this as your "science" elective; in contrast to BPK 110 etc. This class will serve you better than those options which are more difficult than this class. It was intersession so there was a lot of work, but there were no papers, just 3 quizzes and 2 exams. Its the lesser of two evils. Would recommend
Took this as my last Bsci elective, and it was alright. It was intersession in the summer so it was pretty tough with the compressed format, but overall, I would recommend this class. If you could take it as regular 13 week class then it would probably be easy, but compressed 6 week format is what made it difficult. Nevertheless, a decent elective.
Extremely kind, funny, and knowledgable. He gives you hints about what will and will not be on the exam. He's happy to answer questions and he gives you a break in the middle of the lecture. He really cares about his students and wants them to succeed.
This professor is seriously amazing. I never thought I could be so interested in humans' origins. However, his prerecorded lectures are so interesting, and he also brings some humor into them, making it enjoyable to take notes. The exams/ quizzes are straightforward if you watch the lectures and get the textbook. Seriously recommend!
Great prof! Long lectures but he really tried to make them enjoyable. No assignments just a midterm and final which were pretty straightforward. Slides don't have much info because he talks about it instead. Lecture audios were recorded so you don't really have to go (it's best if you do tho). Def read the book bc it's basically what he talks about
This course was online and it felt like the communication from this professor was quite limited. The lectures and tests seemed to be based around a lot of quite specific examples, often more than big-picture ideas, but I am NOT an archaeology student so I'm sure this didn't help. Overall decent course, definitely some interesting topics covered.
Took this as a BSCI elective. This professor was one of the most caring I have met in awhile! He was very understanding of any difficulties students may have been going through and tried to accommodate to such. His lectures are straight forward and really help towards exams. Overall material was easy to intake and interesting. Definitely recommend!
He is a great prof who makes his lectures very interesting and engaging. Would highly recommend taking any of his classes!
Dennis is great, he cares about his students and has a good sense of humour. Once you understand how he tests you'll know how to study, just put in the work and you'll be fine. He also let me do my final by distance.
He makes the lectures very entertaining while discussing some topics that can be a bit dry. He genuinely wants everyone to enjoy the class and do well. I would 100% recommend this prof.
Took this online which was great to be flexible with your schedule, but I didn't love that his lectures don't really have any writing/ points on it he just talks about it and spoke super fast. if you literally write every example and detail he discusses in the lecture the exams are direct questions from the lecture. some interesting content too!
Dennis' lectures are long and note heavy, but makes them amusing with his great humour. Graded only on 2 exams, so devote time to studying. Exam questions were solely from lectures and not meant to trick students.
Dennis is passionate about teaching Anthropology, and is really kind and caring to students. If you do take this course, your mark will be primarily composed of the midterm and final exam so there are not many opportunities to improve your grade. However, if you don't do as well on the 1st midterm he will allocate the weight to the final.
I took this class online. He talks in a very fast pace in the lecture videos so it's hard to take notes methodically. Interesting material though. Not too many assignments, graded mainly on quizzes, tests, group discussions, and final. Most questions are on the lecture material. He doesn't give any feedback on assignments. Studying helps.
Class was okay, everything was pretty standard - group work dropped my grade though. The questions on the quizzes, midterm and final were all awfully specific and rather tough though.
Really interesting lectures and be sure to memorize every word of the slides for the tests, especially when it comes to hominins
Only graded on 2 exams and you have to memorize every single word from each lecture. Lots of memorization and you need to go to lecture to take notes.
Took this class online and his lecture videos were so boring. It was so obvious that he was reading a script and you could even hear him turn the page in the recordings. Course is only graded by 3 quizzes, 2 exams, and 2 discussions. Lots of memorization needed but if you grind hard you can get a good mark. Not a lot of work though imo.
Interesting class, but grades ONLY based on the midterm and final. If you are a neurodivergent student that struggles with memorization I would NOT recommend taking this course. He will NOT tell you what to study specifically at all, so good luck guessing. Have fun memorizing fourteen 3 hour lectures and hoping you remember enough to pass
two exams for the whole semester that will make the archeological trenches your GRAVE! if you were sick and couldn't go to lecture GOOD LUCK cuz the slides are so unbelievably HORRID! pictures will cover the text in the slides so you can't read ANYTHING and only provides lecture audio that cuts out half way through the lecture. never again...
this final broke me in ways i have never been broken before.
HORRIBLE PROFESSOR AND I HATED THIS CLASS. Boring and 15 lectures that are 2-3 hours long each! All the notes from the second half of the lectures are 65 PAGES. No words on the slides, only a photo, he is so boring, monotone, robotic. 2 exams, 2 discussions, 3 quizzes. Not specific on what he wants. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS PLEASE.
Your grade is determined by 2 exams worth about ~50% each. Take very detailed notes during the lectures (not just what's on the slides) and memorize as much as you can. His exams focus on specific facts, rather than overall understanding of concepts. Don't take this class if your memory is bad.
This is the class that made me switch my major to Archaeology. Dennis is an amazing professor and lecturer, but make sure to pay close attention to the lectures and take notes. The course is graded only by a few quizzes, a midterm and final, and a group project.
Lots of material covered in lectures. Regular revision is important. Everyone who complains about reviewing long lectures didn't give themselves enough time to study. If you can visualize a general timeline and understand, not just memorize the information you'll do very well. Dennis is a great prof, material is cool and he often brings artifacts.
If you want to do well you have to make flashcards, this is 100% a memorization course. Do the readings as there is other testable information in there that isn't mentioned in the lectures. He is very funny and often goofs around in his lecture videos -- which is appreciated.
Professor Dennis runs a tough but rewarding class. Lectures are dense - take detailed notes and really study to ace the exams. Unstuck study helped me prepare, along with the free textbook.
I took this class to fulfill my science requirement as a crim student, and it was not what I was expecting based on reviews. The quizzes and exams were online but closed book with very specific questions (e.g., asking you to know how to differentiate between different subspecies of humans). Also spent a week on primates. Take at your own risk
Amazing prof! Super approachable and easy to understand and keeps student interest constant in 3 hour lectures which is rare. The course is based 45% on the midterm and the rest is based on the final. Not exactly the easiest course bec exams are super detailed.
I would not recommend this class as an elective. Exam was difficult and very specific to his lectures and opinions which are boring. Need to spend hours studying content. Recommend taking other courses rather than this class
He speaks very fast on the online videos, I used 0.75 speed and paused it often. You have to take good, detailed notes, sometimes he will say something but not write it on the slides and it ends up being on the quiz or exam. Some interesting content, but a lot of memorization of details like cave sites and physical traits.
Absolute Legend! If you watch lectures and take notes, you will do well in the class.
dennis was a good lecturer and is a pretty funny guy, however he is very arrogant and seems checked out. I want to like him but he needs to put some effort into the course, he doesn't really care about his students.
Dennis is a solid, approachable professor and he often brings fossils which makes the lectures interactive. Course is 45% midterm and the rest is based on your final. Questions are super super specific which can drop ur grade quite fast. NOT an easy elective so dont come in with that expectation
