I loved his 101 class. Totally engaging, fascinating.. I looked forward to class each day and wouldn't miss it for anything. I learned without even trying. If you can take his psych 101 class, DO IT. Dr. Shoemaker also does online reviews before exams... so helpful.

The best professor ever. He teaches this course so well that he almost had me change my major from Nursing to Psych. Was a very enjoyable class. Prof Shoemaker always had a joke to make and a story to tell which definitely made his class more interesting. Tests aren't difficult as long as you study and look at his power points. I would highly recommend taking his course. I enjoyed his course and learned a lot of different things that I didn't know before.

You have the opportunity to get all questions to the exams before hand. If you put the time in, you'll have no problems passing his class. Very funny guy, I would definitely take him again if I had the chance.

Dr. Shoemaker was excellent. His lectures could be boring (especially in my 3 hour long class), but he spiced them up with humor and insight for stories he'd heard and experienced. There were four exams with questions directly from the publisher site, which he provides, and one big research paper that could've killed, but he cut me some slack!

He does his best to teach the information in a humorous manner, allows a note card during exams, offers extra credit and does an interactive online review before exams, the mid-term, and the final. Highly liked and recommended.

Over all one of the best professors I've had in my schooling career. Incredibly helpful and easy to talk to. There was a large research paper due towards the end of the semester, but otherwise the work load was light. If you're going to be taking a psychology course, Professor Shoemaker is a must! A friendly, helpful, and charismatic professor. Lectures were long and emphasis was on taking notes for the tests. The lectures were kept interesting via engaging topics and even occasional comic relief. Class participation was minimal, but expect to be called to answer questions. Was very clear on what was expected from students.

Very great instructor to have. Does reviews for the midterm and final. He does his own notes on the board, I suggest be there on time, not late. Don't miss any of his notes because he will have them on the test. Hilarious and would take again.

Nice and approachable. I just wish there wasn't so much writing. What he doesn't understand is that being called "Mr." doesn't insult his intelligence a bit.

He's one of the best teachers I've taken at HACC. His class is lecture heavy with 4 test and 2 papers that are 2-3 pages long and a summary of a psychology article super easy and interesting you can choose the article you want. The final is not cumulative thank God it's only on the last four chapters he covers. Great sense of humor.

If you're somewhat intelligent do not bother buying the book. I bought it, used it to study for the first exam, then never used it again and got all A's. He does not punish you for not having it.

My favorite professor through all of college. Learns every student's name, and remembers them. Played a different song every day of 8:00am class to wake us all up in the morning (and they were good songs too!). I recommend Shoemaker to anyone taking a Psych course. Dr. Shoemaker is by far the best professor I've had so far. I took him for 101 and loved it so much I took 213 as well. Not only does he care about psychology, he cares about each of his students and goes out of his way to help them in any way he can. Wish I could take him again!!

Shoemaker is awesome. For this class, all you have is 4 exams and 1 research paper. You'll ace the exams if you do the practice quizzes online. His lectures are energetic and interesting and he is very caring and understanding towards students. I looked forward to class everyday and learned something new every time.

Shoemaker is the reason I changed my major to psychology. His lectures are always interesting and he teaches in a way that makes the content easy to understand. There is a large research paper you have to do, but you get to pick the topic and you have 2 months to complete it. You are guaranteed an A if you put the time and effort into the class.

Best professor I've ever had. He really, genuinely cares about his students and you can talk to him about anything. This class taught me way more than I was expecting, I learned something new and interesting each class. The workload is medium, there's 2 quizzes for each chapter, 4 exams, and 1 research paper. I promise it's not as bad as it sounds.

A very well intentioned professor, and I do have a high respect for him and his teaching. He seems to mock bits of religion and political viewpoints in discrete ways, which may be insulting to some, and can forget his filter on some days. He uses some content from the book that isnt in his lessons on the exams too, theres a heads up on that.

Dr Shoemaker teaches in a way that is interesting and you don't forget. His feedback on written research reports was thorough and helpful. He wants his students to enjoy the class, participate, and often makes you laugh. His speech can be slightly crude on occasion, but I would recommend regardless. Tests are easy, but you still learn a lot.

Great personality. Grades papers hard. Tests aren't too hard if you pay attention in class. He has a sense of humor, which makes his lecturing go by faster. He does not use power-point, but does use a lot of video demonstrations during his lectures. He was definitely my favorite professor this semester :)

This was my favorite professor! He genuinely wants you to learn from him, and he has a lot of experiences and examples to share. He keeps class entertaining by cracking jokes, and by playing music before class kind of lightens the mood to begin with. If you read the chapters and take notes you will do fine on the tests.

Shoemaker really is a pretty great professor. Unfortunately it does not let me pick more than three of the tags here, but he was very helpful, lectures were interactive and useful, and he cares a lot about what he does. I cannot compare to other professors at HACC but he is one of the best instructors I have ever had. Would recommend to anyone.

I loved this class. He did a great job keeping the lectures fun and engaging. I was also not just another student in his class, took time to get to know me and my interests. He was very knowledgeable about the subject and cared about how his students were doing .

This professor is one of those who will let you know what you can do to improve what your doing wrong, hes a great professor with a bubbly vibe to him. He can even tell if English isnt your first language which is crazy cool. Hes down to earth.

Loved having Dr. Shoemaker as my Psychology Professor. He is really funny and adds humor to his lectures. He doesn't use PowerPoints, but does write all notes on the board in an outline form. I read the chapters in the textbook, but you definitely don't need to in order to pass.

Outstanding professor. He starts off each class playing a song that relates to what we are learning that day. His lectures are never dull and he explains the content thoroughly. Take good notes and do the online practice quizzes and you'll pass without a problem.

I took Shoemaker in Fall 2017 but I still reference his abnormal psych notes all the time. Out of all the classes I had at HACC, this was by far my favorite. Professor Shoemaker is the best Psych professor I have met. I took him for Psych101 and have learned so much. He cares for his students and is available outside of class. He also responds to emails quickly. He makes the learning easy by explaining during lecture. If you want to be extra prepared for the exams buy the book, if not you'll be okay.

Best professor I've had so far

I've taken two of Dr. Shoemaker's classes, PSYCH 101 and PSYCH 213. I loved both classes. Dr. Shoemaker is a great professor, and a great person in general. He explains things well, he's very helpful and is always happy to discuss things in or outside of class. He takes his job seriously, but has fun with it. I 100% recommend taking Shoemaker.

One of the best professors I had so far! He honestly wants to see his students succeed and do good in his class. Read the chapters that he goes over in class and you'll do fine on the exams.

Dr. Shoemaker is awesome. He helps you with anything you need. What he lectures about is exactly what's on the exams(still encourage to read the textbook). He's pretty funny, but should work on dance moves.

Great guy very funny made 8 am classes on Mondays and Wednesdays amazing the class is pretty easy hes a very good teacher who genuinely cares about his students and wants you to succeed! He was my first professor and Im glad I had him!

Attendance was not mandatory, but I wouldnt miss those classes for anything. The lectures were great with the added bonus of first hand experience on specific topics. Be ready to listen to some fun music at the start of every class. He had a ton of energy that kept everyone engaged and ready to participate. 10/10 would take a class from him again.

One of my favorite professors, he gives you real life experiences to go with the lesson he is teaching. Before he gives you a test, he does an online review and they are very helpful! There is also at least three easy extra credits to help boost your grade!

Mr Dennis Shoemaker is a great teacher. if you ever need help with the class his office hours are always open, he is also very understanding and cares about his student. if you come to his class it will always be the laughs. he also lets you use a 3x5 note card for your test. always be in class to be prepared for the notes that are on the exam.

Professor Shoemaker is by far one of the best professors I've had at Hacc. He cares about all of the students in his class and clearly shows it. His class is not hard at all you just have to pay attention. I took him for psych 101, there were 4 tests and 2 papers. For his tests you're aloud to have one 3*5 notecard with whatever you want on it.

Entertaining Professor. Super nice and easy to work with. Objective grading. Very upfront on what he expected. Easy tests. Given all the materials needed to make A's on all the tests.

I was nervous about taking Psychology. I never did well in high school with this subject, but what makes Dr. Shoemaker stand out is his creative approach to lectures. He sets all notes out in an organized way and has fun with it, using examples or videos to help make material more relatable. He cares HARD for his student's success.

Shoemaker was one of the best professors I have ever had. I have transferred out of HACC and my psych professors now just aren't the same. I would do anything to take another class with him. We had 4 total test which was about 50 questions, he gives you 160 or more questions to study off of and 50 of those are on the test (most are on quizlet). allows you to turn in 3 extra credit, each worth an entire percent of your total grade (so an 87% would turn into a 90%). Really relatable. The reality of disorders come to life in his class.

Dr. Shoemaker is a world class professor! He is kind, funny, gives excellent lectures and feedback on papers. He allows you one notecard to bring into each test, he is determined to help his students grow and succeed. He also plays music before class, which I really enjoyed. He inspires all of his students, we appreciate him.

This is the second psychology class Ive taken with him and he is by far my favorite professor at HACC. Abnormal Psychology consists of 4 tests which include 50 multiple choice and 10 fill in the blank and a 7-10 page research paper on a disorder. If you look over the practice questions, you will do fine on the exam.

Professor Shoemaker is awesome! I wish I could take another class of his next semester. PSYCH101 was a relatively easy course with no homework, two essays, and four tests. Lectures were very interesting and I absorbed the information without endless studying. Youll want to take this course. P.S. Never stop dancing, Professor Shoemaker! ��

This professor honestly gave me hope for my future in psychology. This man has worked in the field and knows what he is talking about. He is passionate about what he does because he loves to teach others about psychology. His life experiences with psychology gives life to his lectures! Who ever is in charge, DO NOT LET THIS MAN EVER RETIRE!

I loved, loved, loved this class. He is one of my favorite professors by far. His lectures are never boring and he adds stories when introducing new topics which makes it easier to remember when taking tests. His notes are always written on the board as you would write them in a textbook to make it easy and always starts class with a great song.

As a high school student, this was my first course on a college campus. My nerves were quickly alleviated when I came to Professor Shoemaker's class. He was very approachable and clearly went over the material for his class. Even in the midst of a pandemic and having to switch to remote learning he made class enjoyable.

Prof. Shoemaker is one heck of a good dude, knowledgeable, eloquent, and seems to genuinely care about both his students and the material. I took his psych class in spring 2020, in the midst of the covid-19 hysteria. Not only was he willing to work with me to extend a few deadlines during the online adjustment period, but he did it with a smile.

Professor Shoemaker was one heck of a great professor. I loved his teaching style and his humor. If you have Professor Shoemaker, you'll definitely be sad leaving him by the end of the course. An amazing professor!!!! The exams are EASY because there is nothing on the exams that you would not know if you read the chapters and went to class. Also, notecard with handwritten notes allowed on EACH exam. Also, chance to do multiple extra credit assignments to bump up your grade and they are things like taking personality tests.

Professor Shoemaker is successful in communication and explaining concepts. He is likable and respected, and carries himself as lighthearted while being serious in appropriate situations. It is obvious that he cares about the well-being of his students and humanity as a whole. He is passionate about his work and material that he teaches.

He instructs well, he's always very clear, he gives good feedback on papers, he's ALWAYS available to help if needed. If you have good memory or take good notes, you will not fail.

AMAZING PROFFESSOR! He is so easy to understand, very positive attitude, easy to follow, and has a great sense of humor. His notes are easy to copy and very organized. If you attend class and read your textbook you will pass! Only 2 journals due that were fairly easy. I have a hard time writing and I got an A on them! Great class!

I had him for psych101, best teacher! I loved him, he was easy to follow and very funny. He records class so If you happen to miss a class he sends you a recording. He has 3 tests. You really have to read all the chapters in the text book in order to do good on them. His lectures are great, you take hand written notes. He responds quick to emails.

This was my second time taking his class and it didnt disappoint. 4 exams (with provided study guides), 1 big research paper, and optional extra credit provided. Dr. Shoe really cares about what he teaches and is an ally, speaking up about our biases and why we need to eliminate them.

I wish there was more graded work in the class since we only did exams and papers. However, he will sometimes tell you the answer on the exam by putting (PICK THIS ONE) next to some questions which I thought was really nice. He gives extra credit as well. Dr. Shoemaker was awesome! He makes his lectures interesting with jokes and gives lots of information regarding the topic. It was a lot of reading, but he goes over all the material in class. The only downside to his class was the only grades were 4 tests and 2 papers, but he isn't a hard grader on the papers and his tests are all multiple choice

Not even joking, this is the best professor I have ever had in my entire life! His class is very interesting and knows how to keep the class entertained. I loved watching videos every class and being able to have a lot of open discussions about topics. I truly will miss this class and highly recommend you take every class he teaches.

Shoemaker is one of my favorite professors, I loved having him for Psych 101! It would be nice if his exams were taken during class time, rather than as homework. But I think he's very engaging in his lectures, and very good at giving the class opportunities to participate through the remote instruction. He even records his lectures & posts them!

I always look forward to coming to class,he always starts the class with a song which is fun but can get loud. We have about 4 tests,4 extra credits and two research papers. He usually follows the syllabus but if he doesn't he'll tell you in class.

Before I took this course I looked the best teacher to have on rate my professor. I had good hopes for this class, but when I say I was highly impressed with how much I loved Mr. Shoemakers teaching styles and his goofy personality. I highly recommend any student to take him.

My experience with Professor Shoemaker was phenomenal, for an introductory class to Psychology it was amazing. I was always excited to go to the class and loved being in the class. I felt like the notes were extremely thorough and I went from understanding quite little about general Psychology to feeling pretty confident in showing my knowledge.

I absolutley loved this class. He had really interesting and engaging lectures and always kept me interested. There was 2 writing assignments and the tests, that was all the work that was given. He was very clear about his expectations and the assignments were not super difficult. Tests you can use a notecard. He was so funny and really cared!

Professor Shoemaker is one of my favorite professors. When discussing hard topics he always tries to make sure everyone is comfortable and makes sure everyone is being respectful during hard conversations.

His in person classes are lecture heavy, but he makes it fun telling a lot of jokes and uses a lot of videos in his lectures. He's very interactive throughout the whole class as well so it doesn't get boring. He is a fair grader and gives lots of study tools almost exactly like his exams.
