Very very unclear due to accent. Think of it as a duel credit:understanding math and a foreign language at the same time.
He is at times difficult to understand, but very good at helping when you need it. Must attend class and pay attention to succeed.
he may be hard to understand in the aspect of his accent but, his willingness to clarify concepts was EXCELLENT!!!
Great professor. He posseses uncanny ability to make difficult subject easy. He accomplishes this through versatility. He will continue to give new examples and different approaches to a problem until everyone understands. Attend class and tests aren't that bad. Best professor Ive had at ASU.
Really nice prof. Helpful, clear, fair, etc. I was so impressed that I took two math classes from him. Hard accent but get past it and its worth it. EXCELLENT!!! Best prof I had at ASU.
I usually hate math and took Prof. Serhan's course to satisfy requirements. However, he made the class not only interesting but clear as well. I actually enjoyed his accent because occasionally he would make me laugh at his funny expressions. He is also very generous, I missed an exam and it was entirely my fault and he let me make it up!
I hated math and really sucked at it before I took his class. He made it easy and was very clear on the subject matter. So far, I am passing the class which is a first for me in Math. He is also very funny at times.
so ihate math more than anything on this earth... but i was able to actually understand and even do well in the class. best math teacher i have EVER had. just go to every single class and take note, youll do fine.
Professor Serhan is very intelligent, but I found myself struggling to overcome the language barrier between us. I'm not sure where he's from, but it was at first very difficult to understand his foreign accent. Mathematics is not my strongest subject, and the class moves a little too fast. It seems that he gets frustrated with questions.
Try to take his Arabic and Islamic culture online classes. A guaranteed A+
He is an amazing teacher. He makes math easy to understand and he always answers all your questions. Also, his accent makes the class funny.
He laughs at himself, very smug and high of himself. His accent is funny but at the same time hard to understand. He told us that he would rather not take attendance but it is mandatory. If you miss 6 classes you get a E no if ands or buts about it. I would recommend you take another professor at all costs.
i dont know what everybody is talkign about... he has an awesome personality and he's really helpful..the class is SUPER easy. guaranteed A.
Sit up front, you'll pass.
great professor, learn a lot, fairly easy

I took Arabic Culture and Islam from her online. Very easy class. Easy A if you post to the board when needed and hand in your assignments. I have 100% on all 3 papers with much work put into them. I did the reading for the first unit and then the book sat on the shelf the rest of the semester.
Hard to understand for the first couple weeks. Doesnt answer questions very good and what he teaches in class is a little different from whats on the test. Does give some extra credit on tests but does not offer a study guide. Only 3 or 4 homework assignments for the whole semester. The book is probably the worst text book i have used, no examples
Great prof. He may be tough to understand, there is a slight learning curve, but if you keep asking questions, he will keep answering them. He does his best to help the class understand the material and is especially helpful in his office hours. Would actively search for a course from him in the future.
Best teacher I have ever had. He is fair and clear. EXCELENT!!!!!!!
Couldn't understand what he said because he is from another country. Accent is awful
Dr. Serhan is a great teacher. He goes over examples from the book, which are your homework as well. He is very helpful and if you dont understand something he is more than willing to help. Tests are pretty easy and all homework is online. AWESOME TEACHER! I really liked him and recommend him.. i wish he tought math 170!
Awesome Professor, not a hard class at all. Prof Serhan wants his students to pass, he is very helpful and easy to talk to, i noticed people were complaining about his accent, but his accent is very clear i had no problems at all understanding him. Great prof and very good personality! take him if you can
Hate this class. Very easy math, but also very boring. He is unwilling to help students, and in his review classes, he will often refuse to answer questions because they are just like one he's answered before. He doesn't seem interested in his students at all. If you don't have a good basic understanding of math already, don't take this with him
Get fullman for this class. Serhan is too hard to understand and it's hard to get an A in this class, although he does offer extra credit.
At first, I wasn't sure if I would like Dr. Serhan, however I really enjoyed having him as a teacher. He gave very few homework assignments and would randomly give out quizzes based on the material he presented in class(some of which were group quizzes). He also gave many extra credit opportunities. I would take another one of his classes!
His MAT 142 class was easier than the equivalent at community college. His environment is very relaxed and if you can get past his unfamiliar speech I highly recommend him.
Professor Serhan is an excellent teacher. He really cares about the students, offers extra credit, and encourages people to come visit him during office hours. His accent isn't that bad, and he's a really nice guy! Wish I could take more classes taught by him!
Has an accent that may be a shock at first, but you get used to it quickly. His tests are all multiple choice and he doesn't give half credit so it's frustrating when you do one little thing wrong and miss the whole problem. He gets frustrated when students answer questions but overall he is helpful and a good teacher.
His accent makes it hard to understand some words he uses. He doesn't really like it if you have questions. He'll answer questions with an attitude of "Duh.U didn't get that?!" Luckily I'm really good at math and just reviewed notes before the exams and got all A's on them. If you did well in high school math and have some clue u'll do fine.
Wicked good teacher. Has an accent but it does not get in the way. Funny guy and allows 5 absences. Easiest math class I've had since about 6th grade.
Serhan honestly is the coolest teacher ever. I studied just right before the test the day of, and aced them. He also gives random extra credit opportunities which rocks. He is super helpful, and makes everyone in the class laugh, and his accent just makes the class even cooler. Overall a super easy class, really fun... definitely recommend it!!
I LOVE THIS CLASS!! Yes it is hard if you don't attend class or pay attention, but he is more then willing to help and cracks a few jokes every now and then to lighten things up!
I have never liked math but he made it much easier to understand. The online homework is a little tedious but it helps out a lot when it comes to quiz time. This ended up being the best math class i have ever taken. He offers little extra credit but he is very willing to help students that make an effort!
He was a good professor. Very clear lectures. A little bit of an accent but not bad. Helped me understand things I learned in high school but never knew why. I appreciated how he built the next day's lecture on what he already taught. Told some good jokes too. Overall, GREAT class and GREAT teacher, as long as you try to put in a little effort.
Professor Serhan is a great teacher that I really enjoyed. He teaches clear lessons and uses many examples to get the point across. His tests are not that hard as long as you go to class, pay attention, and do the homework. He seems very serious and has an accent but that makes him more fun to have as a teacher.
He's a really great. I had some problems first understanding him, but later on i got used to it. He teaches very clearly. Although this class is a math class but it was kind of interesting. I honestly recommend him.
Serhan, great personality. Very nice and helpful. He will repeat anything you need. Don't be afraid to ask him for help. Do NOT text in his class, that's the only thing he really gets upset about. Make sure to study, and dont blow off the homework (you have unlimited tries=free points).
Dr. Serhan is an excellent professor. His class is pretty boring, but attendance is mandatory. A huge chunk of your grade comes from homework, and there's 3 tests for the semester. He is extremely willing to answer any questions on homework or quizzes/tests, and takes the time to explain it all to you. Also, has a huge sense of humor.
DO NOT TAKE A CLASS BY THIS PROF. If you fail just one exam, it is impossible for you to pass the class. He has too much homework assigned, only reads straight from the textbook, and will tell you you are stupid to your face. Beware. You have been warned. Unless you are a super genius and teach yourself anyway, this class is a no go.
Serhan doesn't even teach. Unless you know how to teach yourself, and not a visual person like me, do not take this class. The tests bring you down so much. When you go to talk to him he literally says, "I don't even know what is on the test." Like come on now, we need to learn somehow?!
Professor Serhan is a great. His lectures are clear. You have multiple chances to complete the homework online. His tests are not that hard and they are similar to the examples given in the class.
He is a great teacher and will explain math concepts in a clear manner, but he assigns TONS of online homework.
I have taken this professor 2 times now and I love him. If you want an easy A, good luck finding any math teacher that is like that. But if you want to learn and really understand Calc. this is the professor. Accent was a bit hard to crack first week, but then he is a super funny and SUPER FORGIVING grader. he makes 60's turn into 80's.
If you do bad on one test, you won't pass the class. During his "reviews" before a test, he says that you should recall every theorem and formula that you have ever previously learned in every math class you've taken thus far. Then he proceeds to explain things that "could be" on the test, but end up not being on it.
Class is basically sitting in a class with the professor acting like a tutor. You teach yourself by watching video tutorials, you work on homework, if you have a question, he helps individually. NO LECTURES. He will not allow any make-up, for any reason.
Couldn't understand him most of the time. Isn't great at explaining calculus concepts, and if you don't ask for help you are going to FAIL. Would go to tutoring if you are taking him, because he'll keep going with lectures whether or not you get it. Homework wasn't hard, but the tests were hard, final he finally allowed a cheat sheet
very hard to understand lectures and very few opportunities to boost your grade if you don't do well on larger assignments. doing poorly on the homework or exams individually can take your grade down 2 letters if you're not careful. exam questions can take hours for the entire class together with full resources to solve but no cheat sheets allowed.
He is a great professor. I had him for brief calculus and he is easy to understand, and he is not intimidating. If you have questions about the math, go to his office hours. Make sure you do the homework online. And make sure to STUDY for the exams because they are harder than the hw. The quizzes are in groups of 4 people.
This was the absolute hardest class I've taken. The lectures were hard to follow, and I could not understand his thick accent.
thick accent. very funny if students interact with lecture. group quizzes. YOU ACTUALLY LEARN THE MATERIAL. always asks if there is any questions before moving on. helps students realize that you do need to remember prior math because it all connects.
This professor holds you to the standards, but is more than willing to give further explanation IF QUESTIONS ARE ASKED. Your effort is noticed but so is cheating, so don't do it. He has an accent but it helps to pay close attention during lecture. I would defiantly opt for him on further classes
What a terrible teacher. He by far is one of the worst professor's I had to deal with. He grades way too harsh and has a thick accent that makes it hard to understand. He goes way too fast in class and lectures are confusing. Do not take his brief calculus class. You have to pass the exams in order to pass his class which is difficult.
Excellent professor. Very smart and witty. The test questions are usually derived from the group quizzes taken in class. Gives extra credit on tests questions that are missed.
Grades super hard on exams, but does give extra credit by re-doing some problems then turn in for points. Quizzes are in groups of 4. Pay attention during exam review sessions, he goes over everything on exam. Get good grades on HW and quizzes, try to get a C on exams. Try not to miss class.
He's quite strict at first, but when you get used to his accent and homework you'll get into the routine of it. Group quizzes are helpful and easy- questions from his worked examples in his lectures. Some of the homework questions are difficult and aren't well explained. The exams are all questions he's taught before. Come to class and you'll pass.
From all the horror stories I've heard from other math classes, I'm grateful to have a simple teacher like him. He's very straight to the point and offers different methods on how to solve things. The homework was very easy and helpful to use. Show up to class and the group quizzes and midterms won't be a problem.
Does not care about his students. Hard to ask questions about subject. Would say " if you have to ask a question you are going to fail". Does not explain things easily. You either get it or you don't. I will not take him again. Unless math comes to you really easily I do not suggest taking him.
He was honestly such a great math professor. he really cared about his students passing and really did his best at explaining the material as easiest as he can for people to understand. the homeworks are key to passing for sure since the exams are pretty tough.
Has a bit of a thick accent but you get used to it pretty quick. He starts the semester saying that if you do all the homework and get 60% on all the tests you'll pass, and he's right. Do the homework. The tests are quite difficult but he sometimes offers extra credit for them.
The professor explains everything in a very difficult way and I took calc in high school. He will teach a new concept and then say very simple as if he made any sense at all.
Very bad professor, SUPER thick accent grades very harshly. During the time of our coronavirus online classes he isn't accessible online. Doesn't teach us a single thing and is only making us look at generic PowerPoints from MyMathLab. Had a "review" session for our exam the tutoring center didn't have anything. Don't take his class very bad prof.
quizzes are done in groups which is good, homework is not bad but DO NOT SKIP CLASS or you will not pass. I am not the best at math, if you are like me focus. Overall, good professor but if you can take one with better ratings, go for them.
Attending the zoom meetings wasn't necessary unless you had a specific math question or wanted to take a test, but he made sure to keep us all engaged. I took the class through ALEKS, and It was great because I finished the class in a little over a week, so you can work at your own pace! Really great professor!
Very cool guy - had him for an online summer class and he was super helpful. He let his classes be entirely self-run, you only had to show up to class if you needed help or were taking a test. Great teacher if you're trying to take pre-req math classes.
At first he does come off as strict but honestly he's really nice and actually funny. He wants to see the students succeed. I find his lectures easier to understand than the prerecorded ones, He will show you the easiest way to learn the material. Ace the HW and Discussions you will still pass with a C. Tests are 35% everything else is 65%.
Despite Dr. Serhans heavy accent, the class was easy. 65% of the grade is based on assignments and 35% based on tests. Just do the homework and you'll pass! Tests are similar to the study guide given. Easy!!!!!
Fair. No attendance required. But really strong accent and not very good at explaining some concepts. Take this class if you have already learned the content before. I took his class again because I preferred working myself.
He's a very straightforward teacher - not too accessible outside of class, no extra credit, and doesn't want to hear any excuses. In class though he's very patient and will explains things several times so everyone can understand. There were also a few group pop quizzes so make sure you go to class and sit by smart people.
This class is mainly online using ALEKS, professor doesn't teach but is there if you have questions. Only needed to go in for the tests. After I took all the tests and the final I was allowed to be done with the class; an extra couple of months early. Every few weeks there are "problem sets" which can be completed with others or by yourself.
Homework on canvas is worth a lot of the grade and you either do it and get full credit or miss out on 50 points. Homework on Pearson is standard stuff and the tests are kind of hard. I felt that I got harder throughout the semester, but he's always available for questions. Solid teacher even though the class is hard.
Super thick accent so most of what he is trying to say is hard to understand. I'm personally not a math person but he made it so much harder than it needed to be. He doesn't care for his students and doesn't engage with the class at all. After he's done with a topic he says "very simple" like he just made any sense of the lesson.
Very knowledgeable and passionate about math. Offers a ton of extra credit. Overall nice professor who cares about his students.
Best math teacher I have had. Makes lectures entertaining. Although his tests are very hard he is fair and gives extra credits sometimes. His teaching is good and clear. Would definitely take it again if I had the chance and 100% recommend it to people who have trouble with calculus.
MAT117 is entirely online using ALEKs. The class is general review of an Algebra II class. You'll get the same experience out of any professor; Serhan is helpful if needed. Attendance points are lightly weighted. You can complete all topics/exams and finish the class within a few weeks (you won't have to go anymore) if you understand the content
I did the Mat 211 online course, so there wasn't much work and you could easily earn an A+ with only the assignments and discussions.
I took this course online, there wasn't much teaching from the professor. The lecture videos are made by someone else. You basically have to teach yourself using the textbook and watching videos. There are a few discussions and quizzes and if you do the WebAssign assignments you will pass easily.
Professor Serhan was very supportive throughout the semester. Even though the class was online, he always managed to provide support and guidance. You have to teach yourself a lot of the topics. Exams are similar to practice exams, they are not too bad. I would take him again.
Derar might be one of my favorite teachers here at ASU. His lectures were very engaging, professional, and honestly kind of funny! Homework is due only about every 2 weeks and there's plenty of time between Exams to study. 10/10 guy
This was a great choice for MAT 211. The homework is straightforward and you get multiple attempts for each question to earn full credit, although the course is exam heavy there is only 3 tests total including the final and the questions are identical to the study guide. 10/10 recommend. Great professor, super responsive and straightforward
Dr. Serhan facilitated a pretty seamless class. Provided clear expectations and coursework layout from day one. Was communicative and engaged. All coursework (except for class introductions) was done through ALEKS: (7) weekly topic goals; (8) practice exams; and (4) module exams. Module exams proctored through Honorlock. Highly recommend.
Course is fully self-taught, all the work is online on ALEKS and the professor is there just for questions however he is not the best at answering or helping. ALEKS was very challenging and frustrating as it backtracks your progress if you get a question incorrect.
He does not teach at all it is an all online class. When you ask him questions he is very unclear and makes it more confusing. He also has an accent and is hard to understand especially if english is not your first language.
You practically teach yourself with the videos because everything is online. Attendance is mandatory due to there being groupwork at least once a week which counts as your attendance/participation for that day. The TA's are extremely helpful and will explain something thoroughly if you don't understand how to do something.
This professor doesn't effectively teach math, relies on students to self-teach, and is unresponsive to students' struggles. During exams, lack of support caused significant issues, leading to a withdrawal from the course. If math isn't your strong suit, this class may pose challenges. Good luck if you choose this professor.
the worst professor ever! he never explains and has a bad attitude with students. All lectures videos were from youtube, and he never teaches in class
This class was very self-explanatory and was clear about when things need to be done. However, the class was very much self taught but attendance was mandatory. This was very frustrating because you have to be there even though Dr. Serhan does not do a lecture(participation is 3% of grade).
I did College algbra with him, and it was practically a self taught course. So mostly this is a review of ALEKS, which is in my eyes, terrible software. That said if I ever had questions or needed help, he was very handy, and if hes words failed, you could also ask the TA's. Not sure I would be thrilled to do upper level math with him though.
Can't even understand him. Fire this man lol
I enjoyed class with Dr. Serhan. Would recommend going to class, his lectures were a little confusing but he does examples on the board to help and prep for the homework. You get multiple attempts on the homework and he does review for the exams. Watch out for wording on them though because it can be a little different than the study guide.
I took MAT 117 online with Professor Serhan and had zero issues. You teach yourself in online classes, but he replied within hours if I ever did reach out via email. Lots of homework but lots of opportunities to pad your grade with all of it. For an online class, take him! Do all of the participation grades and you can still pass with bad tests.
Everything you'll be graded on is SEVERAL "exams" along with a Midterm & Final. The exam's you can take over and over again. Be prepared to self teach. The video lectures did not line up with anything you were learning. Gives partial credit on Midterm & Final as long as you upload your scratch paper.
He wasn't very involved, the TA's handled all of the Inscribe questions and tutoring. Three of the tests only have 12 questions and the accumulative final has 18 which I hate because missing one question counts a lot. The exam reviews are just like the exam, if you can master the reviews you will do well on the exams.
Be prepared to do lots and lots of homework for this class especially if taken in the summer. I didnt watch any lecture videos just went off of ALKIS and did really good on my exams and final. If taken this course online it is mostly all self taught but pretty straightforward:)
Took online. Didn't even know our professor was a man til now. We watched lectures with an Indian woman with a strong accent. Example videos on the homework are a different woman. There's no book so you only have those to learn. 3 Exams are each worth 22% of your grade and the Material on exams is way different than the practice exams
The lectures and videos aren't recorded by this prof, but he was very willing to work with students by giving lots of helpful advice on any problems encountered. I assume a lot of the class was struggling and he gave us more extra credit too. The math itself can be a bit tough but use the example videos in Edfinity to help w/homework and you're ok.
The entire class grade is based on three exams; homework is excessive and does not count much. Impossible to understand heavy accent lecture videos, homework videos by different presenter often contradict lecture, no book, no feedback when help was requested. Exams cannot be retaken, excessive honorlock rules make testing more stressful.
The workload is heavy, you never get a break with it being such a expedited class so prepare to do work on the weekends. There are 2 exams and a final (each worth 22.5% of your grade). The exams had 13 questions and the final only had 20, and you don't get credit for your work ONLY the answer! The professor is passive aggressive and rude.
This professor says a total of 4 words per class which is usually “ Exam in ___ weeks/ days”. Not only does he not teach but he is also very rude when you try to communicate with him.
I'm surprised that this professor has decent ratings, but it's probably because the grading and tasks are pretty fair. The professor is very rude and not supportive at all. I would only take him again if his class was the only available class, and I really needed the class to get my degree. He's not understanding of students who work and study.
I really enjoyed this class with Dr. Serhan. There were 3 exams, 2 reviews for each, and one final with 2 reviews as well. Lots of homework. Completing the reviews will help you so much for the actual exams. He also allows you to turn them in up to 2 days late with only a 10% dock and counts your scratch paper as partial credit. Would take again!
I'm not a math major so I'm unsure if this is the norm for all online math courses, but you need to record yourself during the exam no notes allowed. Need to take a photo of your ID (weird). SO MUCH HOMEWORK! Kinda rude but did allow some work to be submitted late with a 10% penalty. Overall, wasn't for me so I dropped the class.
This course is 100% self-taught. The whole course is online on ALEKS, and you have lots of homework. The teacher was just there and didn't do much at all. He is super strict when it comes to tests and I withdraw from this course. If you struggle in math, don't take this course.
The way this school's college algebra program works is very isolating. He doesn't really do much except for telling you how the class works and sending emails. You can ask him a question and he'll explain it well, but the class isn't really hands on.
Wish I read reviews prior to registering for this course. For a lack of better words, this was the worst professor I've ever had. I earned an A on all of my assignments but struggled on tests. I reached out 4 times throughout the semester and the professor didn't provide any support. The advice I was given was to retake the course next semester.
Absolutely terrible professor. He will tell you he needs to go to office hours and not be there at the time and place listed on the syllabus. Grades harshly and gives little feedback. Pretty much a self taught course. He mocks students with phrases like "this is easy!" and "i can do this!" after you fail a quiz or exam. DO NOT TAKE HIS COURSE!!!
If you are good at math take this teacher for sure. It's all done on aleks so you can work ahead at your own pace, and can even stop attending the mandatory attendance classes once you complete everything on aleks. He also lets you take all the tests but the final early. I did every test early and he would look it over and give me partial credit.
Hard to understand during lectures and does a poor job of preparing you for the tests which are the main part of your grade
I don't think I ever heard him talk besides him telling us that class was over. Every exam was 10-12 questions so your grade plummets even if you get one question wrong. I would never take a class taught by him again, if you can even consider saying he "taught" the class.
This course is pretty much self-taught, and the professor is rude. Everything is done in ALEKs, but the practice equations are typically easier than what is on exams. The teacher is also quick to give you a 0 on exams, if it “seems like there's an issue with your camera” during exams. Wouldn't recommend taking his course at all…
This class has a lot of homework, and you teach yourself everything. If you find any difficulties, you can ask him or the TAs. It's a self-study class, no matter who the professor is. Easy math class for me, but you need to study for exams to get an A+
He sent emails to me congratulating me on my test scores which were nice, but was unresponsive afterwards. I think he could do with being a bit more active.
This course is completely self-taught, if you struggle with math I do not recommend taking it.
The class is one hundred percent self taught. The professor was not easy to communicate with and very rude. Not understanding of circumstances with computer issues. If you struggle with math I would not recommend this professor at all.
The course is fully self taught, the professor does not do any lectures at all. It's also not very flexible.
Nice guy and wants you to do well but the class is 100% self taught and online. If you struggle with math like I do, I definitely do not recommend.
Aside from the occasional interaction in Canvas that seemed like canned statements and his frequent announcements, I didn't really interact with the professor at all. Just ALEKS mainly, I felt the layout of the course was fair and simple, just with a decent amount of homework, review and exams.
Do not reconmend
Easy class but mostly self-taught. Exams are Honorlock. Homework is busywork. Professor doesn't lecture; use the module videos. Watch the lecture videos and study the practice exams to get an A+. Practice exams are similar to the real ones, just not identical. No notes or TI-84 allowed, but you get scratch paper and Desmos.
lowkey passive-aggressive.
This class is self-taught, however its not impossible to pass. There is a lot of homework and the tests are where your grade “makes it or breaks it”. Just spam the reviews and you'll be fine. Never really had issues and the interactions I had were positive via email.
This is a self-taught class. You do the required ALEKS topics, and then the exam; No lecture. Review quizzes are just like the exams. You will succeed easily as long as you do the bare minimum of completing the topics and reviews. He doesn't need to be too interactive because of the low course difficulty but I can tell he is a good guy.
