Class: American Pop Culture. Class was very time consuming. Homework daily. Fun couse work. Learned about Fastfood, Batman/Superman, advertisments, and Barbie. Never a boring class. Helped me improve on my writing. One of my favorite teachers.

pop culture: She's a bit nuts and is prone to outbursts of enthusiasm. There was quite a bit of short response writing, and papers could be revised until the end of the quarter. The readings too easy though and not very thought provoking.

Not enough could be written about her. She is definitely the best professors/lecturers/instructors I've had to UCSC. Ask anyone that has taken one of her writing classes, they will speak volumes about her.

I recommend her highly! She's a great teacher, keeps things interesting, and very enthusiastic about her work. Her reader responses online forced me to read, the material is very good. She helped me write a lot better.

One of the coolest professors i've ever had. Talks SUPER fast and we still manage to always run outta time. One of the few classes i've actually really enjoyed going to. Seems like she's actually interested in her subject matter AND the class. AWESOME

Great teacher with a lot of enthusiasm. She made me think differently as a writer, and write better too! She grades essays a bit hard, but no doubt she has her reasons for giving the grade you get. Derede is one commited teacher. She will help you grasp the basic concepts of writing so well, if only you bombard her office hours. She's willing to take your feedback on her course and teaches for understanding, not for hearing her own voice.

Derede is my goddess and my saint! I absolutely loved her. She is so helpful and really wants all of her students to learn as much as possible. She challeneges you perfectly. She's definitely not easy, but I never felt stressed about her class b/c I felt like she always took care of her students. She inspires you to change the world.

Derede is very passionate and a GREAT teacher. I hate writing, but she is EXTREMELY helpfull.Responds emails SUPERQUICK(sometimes in minutes). Demands a lot of class participation, but there's a lot less writing than other W2's so it's cool. Just avoid the 8am unless you're at crown/merril =(

She is so helpful! Always jumpy and in a good mean! Very lenient on turning things slightly late or if you email her she will give you more time. There is a lot of work at once, but just stay on your A-game and you will be fine! She responds fast to email and is overall great! She is so fun and so helpful.

Derede Arthur is one of the best english professors I have studied under. Her teachings has definitely improved my writing and her assignments are actually not that bad. Her teaching actually connects the class together in ways you cannot imagine in other classes. Most classes require around 5 essays, hers only 3.And we can rewrite them for regrade

Definitely improved on my writing in this course but be prepared to have a huge load of work. There is a lot of reading and long assignments but you can honestly skim the reading and you will do fine. Just don't fall behind on it, you will regret it. Presentation at the end. Always there to help though and she is fast at replying to emails.

Derede is an awesome teacher, she really cares about writing and her students. Her lectures can get dull but she tries really hard to spice them up with her relationship tips which somehow relate to techniques in writing. There isn't much work just 1 essay and 2 research papers and you can get away with not reading any of the text.

To my surprise, I actually learned how to improve my writing. Derede teaches you beyond the basics of what you would expect from a typical English class. She chooses very engaging texts. There is a lot of work but not too difficult. Writing is still a dreadful task for me but now I'm not as hesitant to do it.

Derede is a very good teacher and you will learn a lot about writing. Be prepared to work hard on your papers, and definitely proof read everything before turning it in. You get chances to rewrite your papers, but the papers are long. There are readings for every class... lots of reading and writing in this class!

Just take her WRIT2. She's amazing.

She really wants you to learn. If you put in a significant amount of effort, she'll notice and you'll do well. She's extremely helpful during office hours so go to those. Overall, a good teacher. Not as easy as people say the course is, but not too difficult either.

She's definitely a tough grader but her office hours are extremely useful (especially if you go outside of your 15 minute appointment that she offers her students). She is kind and understanding. I'm glad I took her for WRIT2 because unlike my other classes I felt myself improve as a writer. btw readings are online and free!

One of the best professors I have ever had. Genuinely cares about you and is willing to give extensions on papers if you talk to her. Gives great feedback if you ask and allows for unlimited revisions. We only had two papers and you chose what you wanted to do for the final. Not super tough grader but she definitely wants your skills to improve

Even though the class was a lot of work at times and her grading is tough, she genuinely cares about her students and the subject matter. Her critiques were always very helpful and I learned a lot in this class.

Derede is unbelievable. She is one of the few writing professors on campus that actually wants you to improve. She helped me take my writing from mediocre to professional. She gives you lots of opportunities to improve (aka revisions). I would definitely recommend this class!

Derede learns everyones names by the second class. she gets you to pay attention. will really improve your writing and critical thinking skills. You just need to put in some effort, but it's worth it! The topic is interesting. Readings are online so you don't buy anything.

Mrs. Arthur is tough but responsible teacher. She is one of the few teachers on this campus who truly wants your writing to improve! Thanks to her, I am writing my essay way better than before. She even suggests you not taking her class for writing 2!

Writing 2 was difficult. But Derede made sure you succeeded in the class. Lots of homework and I sometimes felt like I was drowning in writing 2 work but she is very acessable outside of class and is always willing to help you get an A paper. Great teacher!

Though it is a high rate for no pass grade in her WRIT 2, I strongly recommend you to take her course if you wanna make revolutionary great progress on your writing skills.

Derede is the best professor I have had at UCSC. She cares so much about her students and makes sure they are informed. We talked a lot about the college system and how it was failing the students. She will learn your name and she is the kindest person I met while in Santa Cruz.

Derede is my favorite professor at UCSC so far. Her class was challenging, but absolutely amazing and fruitful. She made lectures engaging, and she gave detailed feedback on every writing assignment. If you show up, do the work, and use her feedback you will easily succeed in the class. Not to mention, she's a very entertaining person in general!

Tough grader when it comes to papers. Also, you have to turn your camera on to get credit, and if you don't talk, she'll call on you. Her work is manageable, but don't leave anything last minute.

I couldn't have asked for a better prof for Writing 2. There are only three papers and they can be challenging at times but are great building blocks for better writing! If you need to take Writing 2, you must take it with Derede!! Do the readings, try to take notes for the Keepers. Make a group chat with your classmates, it helped so much!

This is a writing class so expect to be writing a lot. She gives great feedback and is available at all times when you need to go over your work. There are many opportunity to edit your work and get as high of a grade as you can. She does grade harshly but she does give you many opportunities to raise your grade. Time consuming but not too hard.

Shes such a nice professor. She interacts with all of her students and seems very passionate. Discussions were really fun too. Just be aware of a lot of homework.

Recommend!! Amazing professor. You can tell she is passionate about teaching writing which is hard to come by. She will do one on ones with you to critique your writing. She can be a bit harsh, but the constructive criticism is useful. If you are looking for a class that's an easy A this is not it. You will greatly improve your writing skills.

I like her a lot. I got a C in this class but it was my own fault. She is amazing, very energized and passionate about writing and our planet. Highly recommend, just BE SURE TO STAY CAUGHT UP ON THE READING. And do the weekly quizzes!! She is very understanding and will give extensions if needed.

Class is mandatory, 2 absences are cause for removal. Very good at communicating and very understanding of extenuating circumstances. Very willing to help.

Derede is an incredibly thoughtful professor, and I feel my writing has improved significantly after taking her class. She does assign a lot of reading and most of the time you have to take notes on it that you turn in. While it is a lot of work, the readings do serve their purpose (most of the time). If you read and participate you will do fine.

Derede is so nice and so passionate about her work, but unfortunately she assigns waaaay too much work. She shoved a whole semester of work into a quarter and was so proud of it. Extremely exhausting class but she was understanding, nice, and compassionate. Show up and put in effort and you'll be ok.

I was worried about writing 2 because I was taking a heavy load this quarter and everyone complains abt it, but it was not bad. We only turned in two papers and Derede was very understanding about the strikes, etc, this quarter. Offers tons of EC. However, if you aren't a good writer and don't apply yourself you will struggle. She is very fair.

The WRIT2 class can be tough, but Professor Derede is understanding and passionate. While the workload is heavy, engaging with the readings and participating helps. Unstuck AI and other study tools can make this course more manageable.

She is honestly is really good at teaching writing. However, I felt like theme overwhelms the class. If you like the theme then you will probably like the class.

I personally had a good time in Prof Arthur's class. The workload can be heavy but def manageable. Tough grader on essays but fair. Make sure to pay attention and do the readings cuz she does cold call on people sometimes and participation/attendance matters. Overall, shes super sweet and passionate about the subject.
