he is a wee bit difficult to folow. not the best ways of teaching but if you do good with just learning from the book he is your guy. he is aproachable but does not always help you in a clear manner.
I took the 5-week summer course and it was very intense but he taught us a lot. It was very tough material to learn in such a short time and he was there before class to answer any questions that we had. His tests were hard, but if studied really hard you could do well. I would definitely recommend him and I will take another class with him.
Mr. Bascom is a very good teacher. His lectures are easy to understand. They are also interesting. His tests are HARD !!!. When you finish his class, you will actually know something about chemistry. I would recommend him as a teacher. Especially,if you have plans to take more chemistry classes.
Great communication. Friendly. Approachable. Knowledgable. Enjoys his subject matter. A great experience in a difficult subject.
I really didn't like him or his teaching ability. The class was very intense and his tests were really hard. I felt he was pompus and thought highly of himself. Yes, he is there is you need helf (but really only before class). The reading and homework is crutial. His homework is optional but basically if you dont do it you are screwed for the quiz!
Awesome professor! Highly recommended! :) His tests are challenging, but are only from material covered in class. He's very approachable, knows his subject well, and wants the student to succeed. He's a funny guy and makes chemistry fun to learn! I hope to take another class with him! :)
Definitely be prepared to write notes in this class. Mr. Bascom loves to talk and he does so very loudly. I think he is just right for new college students. His upbeat attitude and love of his profession is refreshing and addictive. I would take a higher Chemistry class with him if it were offered. If you do the work (and it is hard), you leave his
I think he is just right for new college students. His upbeat attitude and love of his profession is refreshing and addictive. I would take a higher Chemistry class with him if it were offered. You leave his class with an optimistic view of chemistry. His tests are straight from the lecture, so take good notes and you can't fail.
Hes a great teacher and i recommend him. Chem is a hard subject to take (esp in summer like I took it) but he makes it easy to learn. His tests are super hard but his grading policy made up for it. He writes all his notes on the board so you have enough time to write them all down. He makes the class interesting. A must take class.
I loved this class, and this professor. I started out this class hating chemistry, but I am now actually considering it as a minor, thanks to him. Chem is a hard class by nature, but he makes it really easy, and fun! If you didn't take chem in high school, or did and struggled like I did, then I strongly recomend this class to help you get started.
Favorite chem professor so far and one of my favorite professors of all time! He is extremely helpful and clear. Makes chemistry easy, is fair, and helps you actually learn too. I was awful and had dropped the class twice prior to Bascom, and now I am very well prepared for 105 and 106.
This Class hits you hard and fast! Bascom's teaching style is old school and makes sense of some really hard to grasp ideas. His practice exams, quizzes and homework give you a good idea of what you don't know and help immensely with studying for the exams. Take this class seriously if you want an A. His grading style rewards those who try hard.
Chem is not an easy subject but he makes it easy to learn. Attendance, taking notes and doing the hw will help you tremendously. He gives you an advantage by helping you understand very difficult concepts. Take him! He's brilliant!
Take this class seriously and you will learn a lot and do well. After taking Bascom's class, I was very prepared for Chem 103 and pulled an A. Good luck!
He is a wonderful teacher. His test aren't easy but he is fair. If you attend class he explains the concepts very well. I wish he taught higher Chem!!
Pretty good at teaching, I hated that he tried telling us we are all made out of star dust (seriously?!) Homework is really difficult, takes about 3 hrs and is due once or twice a wk. He uses a comp. system called mastering chem and if you don't type something exactly how the comp. wants it then you get it wrong. Hopefully he will stop using it!
His teaching style is good but his test are hard. There are 4 exams worth 100 points and quiz every chapter of the homework. He will give you a practice exam but it will be way different from the test.If you know you will be struggling on this subject then you are wasting your time with him.
Great teacher for beginners chemistry, truly loves the subject. Pretty funny too.
Great teacher! He explains material very well! I've never had to use my book once. Everyone says his tests are hard, they are not, study from the notes he gives you and you'll do just fine! I would recommend him to anyone
Great teacher with lots of enthusiasm. He keeps the topics relevant and explains all topics very well. Quizzes and tests are challenging, but well put together. He grades on a curve so you can concentrate on learning the material rather than getting a 100%. This is the first chem class I've taken and he's made it enjoyable.
Awesome instructor. Passionate. If your looking for an easy A he's not for you, but would you really want an easy chem class? The next level chem classes are not easy. This is a great class to take for a refresher. This guy makes chem as exciting as it can be. I would take another course with him in a heartbeat.
Extremely nice and helpful professor - he enjoys showing students how to solve the problems, but doesn't give you the answers outright. Definitely a great guy to start the subject out with.
Professor B was an amazing and passionate teacher. You can tell he absolutely loves what he does. Hes fun and full of life. Easy to talk to, and doesn't mind taking time to explain. He does not make you feel stupid when you ask him questions, and he grades on a curve. The class is NOT EASY. ITS HARD. but having a great teacher makes it worth it.
I came to college with no prior history in chemistry but an overall love of science. I took 055 before Bascom and failed miserably!!!! Not only did I get a B in his class but I have earned nothing but A's & B's since. The foundation that he provided was invaluable. Go to class, do your homework, & study; you'll do just fine.
I struggle to limit the good comments to 350 characters. Extremely kind and patient. Genuinely cares about students. Knows how to communicate a difficult subject in plain English. He was very energetic and amusing in lecture. Before class, he would often just talk and joke with students or answer random questions. Curved almost too generously.
Great professor, UAA should take notice of this. Loves to talk to you, whether its chem or an actual conversation. Very helpful during office hours, energetic, and wakes you up during the 5:30pm class. Quizzes were very fair, tests were ridiculously easy compared to Vugmeyster's. Clear, concise, loves to tell stories. Take'em if you want to learn!
This guy is awesome! His lectures are relevant and lively even for the evening class. Gives quizzes frequently but drops the lowest couple and the rest together count the same as an exam grade. He won't give you a good grade but if you work at it he is more than willing to help. I was very disappointed when I found out he wasn't teaching Chem 106
He's a funny guy, I just wish he was more understanding and more detailed. I don't find his lectures useful at all, I always end up going to the book or on google. Attend the lectures so you know what the topic is about.Quizzes...just remember, when he does a calculation on the board, work on it for the next class, it'll be on the quiz!
Great TEACHER!
Take 105 from Bascom. He explains things clearly. Examples are good. He doesn't use slides, attend lecture and take notes. His tests were difficult but I didn't feel like they were asking unfair questions. It's a shame he doesn't teach 106. He is helpful during office hours. He talks to people before class and shows up early. Good teacher!
Awesome teacher. I'm awful at chemistry but he made me enjoy it and was really funny. He welcomes people to come to his office hours for any extra help and wants people to succeed. If you get an A in his 055 course he will guarantee you a spot in his 105 class too!
Awesome teacher. Kind and approachable, clearly enjoys what he does. Very entertaining and is able to explain everything in plain English.
I was told before hand by other students that he was a really great teacher. I was really disappointed by the end of the semester. He is very good at explaining and can be fun during class. However, his quizzes and tests are much harder than the homework or ANY examples in class. But he is rude and condescending when you talk to him.
I don't have experience with other chem instructors, but I would definitely recommend him for 055/105. He is quite personable and understanding. He will take the time to help you understand any foggy situations. Quizzes are frequent and thus regular attendance was necessary.
He's super funny. Chemistry is not my strong suit, and he made things easy, if you ask questions he'll answer them, or get back to you. He tells you what you need to know and what you'll need to know for future chem classes. Study for the tests and listen when he says the tests get harder, because they do.
I hated his pop quizzes. For the first few lectures he'll have three in a row then randomly throughout the semester. One per lecture around finals. Straight forward. The lecture makes the subject appear easy but you have to put in a lot of work to do well on the tests. Don't procrastinate. Grades with a curve. Arrogant sounding.
His notes are great, pop quizzes are frequent, tests are insanely hard (because of time constraints), and he's a decent (albeit arrogant) guy. I wouldn't recommend taking this with a hard class load. I would recommend his 055 class, but I can't recommend his 105 class because of his unreasonable quizzes alone.
wasted my time. Too many pop quizzes that are test questions basically. He goes through little material but gives you a ton of annoying multiple choice questions on the exam worth 2 pts each. if you like to read whole chapters prior to lecture then go for him.
Great professor! Not monotone what-so-ever, clear, and uses frequent examples to help the class understand what in the world he's talking about! He gives quizzes frequently, but drops your lowest quiz scores at the end of the semester. I would definitely recommend him for chem 103!
I would argue that Bascom is probably one of the best professors at UAA, and definitely one of the best professors I've ever had. If you have an opportunity to take a class with him, do it.
Teaches class fairly well. Personable & humorous. He is also very rude, condescending, and sarcastic.
Professor Bascom is very willing to help students, explains chemistry in a clear/logical way, and generally makes class fun.
AMAZING lecturer. He does a great job keeping you interested. Quiz: almost every class; Hw: once a week, online. Tests he makes hard on purpose and then adds points later. Drops the lowest quiz scores, and is extremely helpful. Works hard to make sure that everyone understands and that you can get a good grade on the test.
Took him for chem105. Since this is a chemistry course there was a lot of reading the text book. This instructor did a marvelous job at explaining the chemistry and math. A lot of quizzes that students will complain about, but they really just make sure your up to date and know your stuff. I highly recommend this instructor.
Homework has nothing to do with what you learn in class and won't help you vert much on the quizzes or tests, but doing it will give you a better grade and it's still practice. Study examples he gives in class,be ready for a quiz over it during the following class. Tests are exactly what he say's they will be, study hard, and study everything!
Attendance isn't mandatory but any class you miss is a hit to your grade. He might have a quiz or go over important material and tell you it will be on the next text and some students don't catch that. I wouldn't take this class with any other professor. Notes are great, he tells you what to expect on the exams and answers any questions.
He is helpful. He sighs a lot if you take the later class. I have been told by many people that her is one of the best Chemistry professors
He is very self righteous and pompous. So full of himself. Bascom delivers his lectures with such intensity that it is overwhelming and disturbing to watch. His tests are hard and his pop quizzes suck, it makes it so you have to attend his insufferable lectures. He is crass and unclear. I would not recommend this teacher.
Mr. Bascom is a brilliant professor. I enjoyed his lectures very much. There is a homework assignment each week and quizzes almost every lecture, however, the notes you take in class will help you greatly. I would take him again if I could. Thanks Mr. Bascom for an awesome semester.
Took Mr. Bascom over Summer 2014 semester. His lectures are very clear and helps students understand the material presented. Extremely passionate about what he teaches, making lectures interesting. Attendance is almost mandatory due to random pop quizzes. He's friendly and approachable!
Best teacher I have had. Not the easiest by any means, but the best. Great teaching style. Faster pace lecture but extremely clear with the material.
extremely good teacher. Has a flow that is easy to understand. Answers your questions and makes sure you understand. Funny guy which makes class enjoyable to be in. Tells you how it is. Easy to respect
He is a really great chemistry teacher.
Mr. Bascom is a teacher who gives entertaining lectures with the opportunity to learn a lot if you pay attention. He makes it very clear what he's looking for in his tests; take notes and highlight those things! There was a quiz every time you went into class and those can be useful when studying for the exam. To be honest, he's the nicest one.
Great at giving lectures and is very clear when explaining things. His tests are tough but, if you practice with problems out of the text book, you should have no problem getting a good grade on them. He curves tremendously. As long as you are doing better than others, you will get a very high grade. I would take another class from this professor.
Read chpt before lecture and work some problems from the book, get homework done early, these two things will better prepare you for the many pop-quizzes. Chem 103 is the hardest freshman level course at UAA, don't under estimate it, you are going to work hard or fail. Bascom gives good example problems during lecture and makes Chemistry fun!
Best professor I've ever had! He used to be a hghschool teacher and you can tell he really enjoys teaching. He takes a very scary subject and makes it makable with his teaching skills. If you don't do the homework, it will kill you. Even if you ace the exams (4). If you go to class, take notes, you will not have a problem passing.
You got to work your tail off to get the grade you want. The A is possible. The homework is a grade booster. Read before class so you could ace the pop quiz's.
He is very a very tough grader. His lectures are long and fast paced, be prepared to take lots of notes. His tests are pretty hard. I am not very good with Chemistry at all and I'm not sure how much I took away that I actually understood.
He has great stage presence but if you ask do help in class you will very rarely get it and if you have a full time job getting to him during office hours is a pain.
His lectures are too fast, so its hard to take simple notes because he'll skip to the next topic in a hurry. He is so sarcastic when explaining things and his quizzes are unpredictable. He constantly repeats the same thing as if you don't know anything, which makes you tired of learning. I personally would never take one of his classes EVER again.
Prof Bascom is an AMAZING lecturer. Unfortunately, Chem is tough. If you don't go and take notes you won't pass. You also have to read the book. He makes test VERY tough, because he doesn't want everyone in the class to be in the top 10%. He does curve grades though. Gives out pop quizzes all the time but keeps your top ten scores.
There was never a day that I didn't come out of that class feeling better about chemistry. He doesn't make things easy but that was a great thing because I actually learned the information, I didn't just regurgitate it.
I took Chemistry with another professor(Holmberg) the semester before and ended up dropping because I felt like I had to teach myself (and Chemistry is hard enough as it is). So when I took Bascom I was so worried... but he ended up being great. His lectures are understandable and he breaks it down for you. I got an A. I highly recommend him!
Bascom doesn't lie to you chemistry is really hard and if you don't read and study you won't pass. He try's to relate the material to you because he knows not everyone understands first try. Online homework but his quiz's are what you want to study with
Really good teacher, I honestly didn't like chemistry before his class but he made it to where I could understand it therefore enjoy chemistry and the overall class, he makes things very clear. He has pop quizs but they're not too hard if you pay attention. He is a fair grader and has things graded in a timely manner. Would definitely take again!
Awesome Teacher, He is really in to chemistry, and the way he teaches by giving real life examples really makes it to where the concepts are really easy to remember and understand. Fair grader, gets your papers back in a reasonable time. Would definitely take a chemistry class with Professor Bascom again!
I have taken three semesters of chemistry with Mr. Bascom. I would take another class with him in a heartbeat; he is super funny, and very engaging. His 106 and 105 classes are more difficult than the intro class, but the is to be expected, as it is harder material. Super personable, makes chem easy to understand and tells you what to study for.
Bascom is great because he gets to the point and does so in a way that ensures he delivers all the important information in a way that his students can understand. In his own words, "Chemistry's hard"; if chemistry is not your strong suit, expect to allocate some time to it outside of class. Show up to lecture and do your homework. You'll do great.
Any chemistry course you're going to end up teaching yourself through your book. All you can ask for is a fair professor that will only put things in the test that he went over. Mr. Bascom may be one of the only fair chem professors at UAA. He had a nice sense of humor. Purposely gives 12+ pop quizzes so that you can't just skip and have to study
Lectures are very clear and concise. He makes what he thinks is important concepts very obvious. Show up to lecture and take good notes, it'll help a lot with studying. Tests are reasonably difficult and very little curve is typically given, 5-ish points. Homework is not super helpful as a study tool. He is open to questions in and out of class.
Bascom is great, learned a lot. You will have to pay very close attention to lectures or read the textbook. With effort and work it's not hard to get an A. Just do your homework and pay attention in class.
He was the best. It's a lot of information that we cover but he makes it clear and easy to understand, but you do have to put in effort outside of class to make it through this class. He has online assignment due every week and pop quizzes but as long as you look your notes from the previous class you'll do fine
Bascom was my favorite professor at UAA and more specifically, the best chemistry professor I've ever had. Things that have never clicked for me I suddenly was able to understand with Bascom's lectures. He's funny, explains things extremely well, and makes chemistry fun. I found myself excited about chemistry each time I went to class. Go to class!
Great professor that really cares about students learning.
He was on of the best professors I have ever had (in all subjects). He really cares about what he is teaching, and he makes class entertaining and incredibly easy to follow. His tests are hard but fair, and ultimately, you will be completely prepared for the next level of chemistry. Fantastic teacher!
Professor Bascom is an AMAZING teacher! I was horrible at chemistry before I took his course, and now everything makes so much sense. The material isn't exactly easy and it definitely took some studying to do well, but I would recommend this course to anyone. He is funny, engaging, and overall excellent.
To start off, I have found I was not able to coop with Bascoms teaching style well. He does a lecture based on broad concepts and history. That didn't exactly coincide with the homework problems well. He uses myChem online system for homework so that makes it slightly more difficult for homework, plus its graded. Takes some getting used to.
Hands down best Chem teacher I've ever taken! I'm sad he doesn't teach 106 next semester because I would rather take him over anyone. Had him for 055 and 105 and have learned so much from his classes. He has an arrogant sense of humor but means well. Has pop quizzes and pretty tough exams, but if you're willing to work it's so worth it.
Bascom is an amazing teacher and will help you out as much as he can. He takes a tough subject and tries to make it as easy for you to understand as possible, but it's still up to you to do the work. My advice, always work the problems at the end of the chapter! And be prepared for the pop quizzes.
Bascom is very intelligent teacher that has the ability to slow and make some of the lecture topics easier to understand. The keyword there is "some." If you are terrible at chemistry like I was the best way to pass his class is to show up every class because he frequently dishes out quizzes which after you pay attention in class they aren't bad.
Mr. Bascom is a friendly, exuberant teacher who is passionate about the subject matter, but will directly tell you what he doesn't care if you know. He explains things in a clear, concise manner and grades fairly. He is funny and personable. I hope he gets to keep his job.
Great Teacher but hard! He speaks really fast and write his notes fast on the dry board. You differently have to keep up. I found the quizzes 50/50 hardness.. He likes to throw in random q's to test your skill also does this on his test. FYI- his test are 3 to 4 pages long! 16 maybe multiply choice. STUDY!! He pulls q's from the web and book
His lectures were very quick, and I barely had time to scribble down everything he wrote down on the board before he was off to the next thing, so I had to learn off my notes after class. His lectures were fun though. Stay on top of your homework, and study with the anticipation of a pop quiz every lecture!
This was the most confusing class I've ever had in my life. He does not go over the material properly to help students understand. The quizzes didn't make any sense at all. The lectures are super long and confusing and he skips from one topic to another. You'd be better off taking Chemistry with another professor.
Fun lectures, passionate
Such a great teacher. I never understood Chemistry until I took his 055 and 105 classes. He genuinely wants his students to understand the material. He gives random pop quizzes so stay on top of the material and make sure you're in class. Overall, he's an awesome teacher and a nice guy. I was bummed he didn't teach 106 this semester.
Bascom is a very knowledgeable and caring teacher. He takes hard subjects and makes them approachable and understandable. 103 has a lot of material and at first it can seem intimidating but he is very helpful at breaking topics down to make them more understandable. Don't get behind and go to class, his tests heavily reflect the lectures.
Mr. Bascom has been my favorite instructor so far in my college career. Chemistry is not easy but he breaks it down and provides examples to help you understand. I know he's leaving but I (and many others) wish he wasn't. He is a quality, once in a lifetime professor. UAA is missing out by losing him.
Bascom is a really great prof! He really made sure that the students knew the material, and he is a really funny guy. I had him for lab also, & it was nice to have the same prof. for lecture & lab. Homework was online, & quizzes almost every week. Actually would have to study to do well on the tests. I heard this might be his last semester @ uaa
Professor Bascom is a marvelous lecturer, and he really cares about his students. 10/10 would recommend, thoroughly teaches the material & includes real-world examples and tries to make learning fun. Beware of pop quizzes (once a week), and he grades the best ten quizzes and drops the rest which helps! TESTS ARE HARD but are similar to quizzes & hw
One of my favorite professors. Explains everything thoroughly, gives easy pop quizzes to boost grade. Weekly online homework assignment, and 4 tests during the semester.
He is an amazing teacher. After taking AP chemistry in high school, I was in need of a refresher. He really knows his stuff; he explains things with ease and can naturally engage the whole class by just being himself. I would totally love to have him again.
Mr. Bascom was the best teacher I have ever had. His lectures were AWESOME! His stories were hilarious, and they made chemistry make sense. The quizzes were great prep for the tests. I liked that you had to learn to get a good grade. I got more out of his class than anything else I have ever taken at UAA. I am so sad he left UAA.
