Really interesting guy. He was very clear on most points and gave examples in class. He really has an interest in seeing students learn Econ.
Enjoyed classes, usually gives bonus points on tests and attendance bonuses.

He seems very laid back, and easy to me. Others found him tough but I noticed they never asked any questions so...He seems to have a good sense of humor and grades fairly, even after I pestered him repeatedly.
he is extremely boring
Great teacher, easy to understand, not too much work required to get an A.

He was an extremely hard and boring professor...he prefers baseball to teaching.
Boring Boring Boring Boring Boring Boring Boring Boring Boring Boring Boring Boring Boring Boring. Did I get my point across? Seems to me like he is a misplaced mall rat. Maybe one day UAH will find some econ professors who give a sh*t. I pity the fool who signs up for any of his classes.
does anyone know anything about this professor? please respond if you do. thank you!!
I think he's very interested in having students learn the material and is willing to put in extra time with students. His tests do not match up to his study guids and the wording makes the exams very difficult. Would not recommend this teacher (if you want to pass the class)!
I found this professor VERY interesting. He spends time with students explaining the topics. He uses current events topics to relate to his studies. He is always available for questions and help on a topic. If you come to class and pay attention you have to try to fail this course.
Interesting class. Very helpful instructor. But guess what I got a C in his class anyway. I think that Econ on a whole is difficult. Would rather take him than Payne any day.
He is very interesting. I would recommend him over Payne any day of the week. He makes economics easy to understand and puts it in ways that we can understand. He uses very good examples and is willing to help. Funny guy..
He was very helpful and did everything he could to help the class. His tests reflected his notes almost exactly and if you understood the concepts you do fine. Very good teacher.

Awesome teacher for both Eco and Stats. Would definitely recommend him.
wonderful teacher!! very helpful and wants students to succeed. i would definitely recommend him.
He is really a great teacher. He tries to help students in all the way he can.He is one of the best teacher I ever had.
I LOVE THIS TEACHER! He "dumbs down" the material so that anyone, who puts in the effort, could easily understand. Uses real-world examples to explain economic concepts. I will be taking him for the second part of this class, and both Statistic classes
Great guy, makes learning ECO easy. He uses great real world examples and is very fair. If you have to take ECO, track him down. He's one of the best at Calhoun...
great teacher!! very helpful!
LOOOOOVED this teacher! i had him for both econs and both stats classes. hes wonderful and super helpful! take him if it fits your schedule!
boring
Very good teacher. Teaches with real world examples that makes it easy to associate with. Very thorough.
Great instructor! Explains material where it can be understood. Stats is not meant to be easy, but you will do fine if you attend class, take notes, do homework. No surprises on tests, they are like his notes. Responds quickly to email, available after class when needed. Highly recommend him.
Great teacher.... cute 2... is he single... not sure
Wonderful teacher! Very helpful and is very clear. Uses good examples so that you can understand what he is talking about. I would definitely recommend him!
Great guy, very helpful. If you come to class, pay attention, and write down everything he writes on the board, it's impossible not to get an A. He really seems to want everyone in the class to do well and he explains everything perfectly.
I've got 70+ credits at Calhoun and this instructor is in my top 5.
OMG I love Mr. Berry! Had him for Statistics during the summer. He makes you work for your grade, but he has hw help sessions which help as well. As long as you take notes, and do your homework, you should do fine. I will definitely take him for more of my business classes!
I wish he could teach every class I have to take! Economics is hard, but he is a great instructor and really makes sense of what he is teaching!
Mr. Berry is the best teacher I have had so far @ Calhoun! He wants his students to learn and is very helpful if you are having problems. I highly recommend him! I look @ stats in a whole new way now and actually enjoy it :)
The worst teacher I've had for a math class. At the end of the semester he changed our homework grade percentage from 16% to 10%. I was counting on that homework, considering math isn't my best subject. And then he gave everyone a 90% grade for the homework! So much for the people who actually tried to do it. Worst teacher..
I absolutely love Mr. Berry! As long as you show up for class and study your notes you'll be fine. He doesn't use the textbook for either economics class which saved some money.
This is a tough class. I think he knows what he's talking about though. Several people did bad on one test & he allowed everyone to improve their grade. 4 tests (multiple choice, short answer, & diagrams), homework, & a post test. Not an easy A, but if you pay attention, take good notes, study, & do the homework, you'll likely succeed.
Great teacher!! He really knows what he is talking about
Personally Mr. Berry is a good egg. Lectures are disconnected and long. You will NOT pass by just showing up, taking notes and studying - unless you have an aptitude for Math andor Statistics - YOU have to 'get' the material in order to pass and he is not very good at bridging that gap - although he tries valiantly.
I was extremely nervous before the semester started about taking Stats. Mr. Berry is an amazing professor. To me, he used relevant examples and made it more interesting and easier to understand. This was my favorite class so far.
I took Mr. Berry for the 2nd Econ class and both of my Stats classes. I did a full two years at Calhoun, and he's definitely one of my top 3 favorite professors. He made economics understandable, and is part of the reason I'm pursuing a finance minor now. I passed both stats classes with an A as well. He explains in clear English. Highly recommend.
Take Mr. Berry for Stats I and II. He cares about students and makes sure everyone understands the concepts before moving to the next chapter. He's quick to respond to emails and is willing to explain anything again outside of class. Do the homework, study, and go to him for help and this should be an easy class.
Mr. Berry is a great teacher. I am taking him for BUS 272 next semester, too.
Great Professor for Stats! Explains very well and be sure to take notes. Do your work and you should end up making good grades. He makes sure that every one understands the material. Try to do his textbook homework, bc his test question are pretty much similar to it. Just numbers will not do, you will have to explain.
I took him in the summer and the lectures do tend to drag on, but he explains the material well and makes sure everyone understands the lessons before he moves on. His exams are pretty straight forward if you study the notes and practice the Hawkes hw. He also reviews what will be on the test before you have it. Would recommend for Stats 2.
Dr. Berry explains Stats in simple terms & basic examples. His tests are similar to study guide/reviews he goes over, has bonus Qs. He uses every minute of the class time. He makes special times for those who could not take a test during regular time (due to work schedule). He wants you to understand and will show examples until it clicks!
Mr. Berry does a great job of making stats very understandable. We had 3 tests, 28.5% of final grade each. Not much extra credit. He gives lots of examples in class, makes the concepts very clear. Tests make you think- they aren't copy/paste versions of a study guide. I really like him, but I do wish he posted grades on blackboard more often.
He's a good guy and a good professor. He truly cares about his students and makes sure everyone is on the same page and really breaks the material down. Go to class and pay attention and you will pass.
Great teacher. He likes participation and cares that you understand the material. I took him for Stats 1 and 2. Be prepared to study or you will struggle. He is very accessible outside of class and quickly responds to emails. There are 3 tests for the semester and usually 1 or 2 homework assignment per week.
He was okay, I imagine if I take him for a different class it would be better. He said he hadn't taught micro economics in a few years and I think that was why there was a lot of back tracking in his lectures and examples. He is good at the explanations. The concepts are just very generalized and not meant to be thought too in depth.
Class is super hard, even if you attend all lectures like me. Does not go by the book, and is difficult to understand. Not enough grade opportunity as everything is determined by just a couple of tests.
Mr. Berry is an excellent teacher. I had him for both BUS 271 and BUS 272. He really understands the material and he helped alleviate a lot of the anxiety I had about statistics. There is a project in Stats 2 that's I thought his directions were a little non-specific on. Small amount of homework, so your grade comes from the tests and the project.
VERYYYYY Unorganized!!! Never know when a test will be.
I really recommend Mr. Berry he is very funny and knows how to explain any question you have in class or in an email. He is just slow on grading but he gives good feedback.
Amazing teacher that is obviously passionate about the subject he teaches.
I have taken Berry for Stats I&II and I highly recommend. HE CARES! He loves what he does, and he wants his students to share in that knowledge. He is a great and fair instructor. His tests are hard, but he prepares you for them. His lectures are funny and solid. He is funny and solid! Take him!
Awesome teacher! Very knowledgeable professor and translates that knowledge into an easy to understand format. I would absolutely take him again, I'm very surprised he hasn't been poached away by a larger school as any institution would be lucky to have him.
One of the best professors I've encountered at Calhoun Community College! Clear, concise presentation, organized and structured curriculum--if you do not pass this class, it is because you didn't try. Other teachers could learn a thing or five from Prof. Berry!
I guess taking him online was the wrong move because he only updates grades and responds to emails once a week. Assignments count for less than 15 percent of your grade, with exams counting for 85 percent. You have to use Hawkes learning which is basically a worse mathXL. If I didn't email him we would've probably never spoken. Don't take him
He uses the Hawkes a lot to give homework and his test are nothing like the Hawkes homework so you should only really focus on the examples he gives out himself. His first test is super hard, so you really need to understand what the questions are because the are all so similar but his other tests are only a little hard.
He is a good teacher and communicator. His tests are not heavy, but the wearied, something you are not going to be used to it. test don't come from your H.W.I never got a C , except in his class. My friend warned me, but due to COVID there was no other teacher, and now I am almost failing the BUS272
Mr. Berry's class was a good class. He gave great lectures and Hawkes is a good software. At the beginning of the semester, his tests were 85.5% of your grade and he condensed it to 75%, which helped my grade in the course. He is super friendly and cares about your success and was easily accessible in Teams. I am taking BUS 272 in the spring.
Great professor! My stats 1 teacher was terrible so i was dreading stats 2. Mr. Berry provides plenty of resources to learn the material. He explains things so well that even the stats dummies like myself can learn it. His lecture videos are short and to the point with printable notes to follow along. Highly recommend!
It is a really hard class. I survived and PASSED yes, but I would have gotten a better grade if I had just taken STATS and a few easy classes. 3 tests--MATTER HEAVILY. HW does not matter-- the tests do! Very hard to learn all the material online and at home. Mr. Berry did care I must say. Be prepared to memorize a lot in a short time. Good luck!
He seems to really care. The class is hard though. If you do not watch his videos you will not pass. I learned that the hard way. The test are so heavily graded that it doesn't really matter what you get on the homework. If you don't pass the test you won't pass the class. He gives you the material you need. You just have to put in the work to pass
Mr. Berry is an AMAZING professor. Yes, stats is a hard subject, but he explains it very well and you can tell he loves his job and the material. For his tests, you must study his handouts and practice the problems He gives, NOT Hawkes. We use Minitab, a stats software a lot and his tests are two-part, proctored, and non-proctored Minitab. Take him
He wants you to learn and succeed. His lecture videos/sheets are amazing (so good I didn't need the textbook), and does team sessions before tests to make sure you understand everything. Grades somewhat quickly and responds quickly. Would take him again in a heartbeat. One of Calhoun's best professors.
Worst class fist I have ever failed wont take again do not take him
His class is hard I would not take him. Homework does not matter only test and he makes his own which does not help when doing the homework. Do not take him worst teacher
Stats 1 worst teacher rambles during lectures do not take
Worst class ever. He makes his own test, which are VERY HARD to understand. Only 3 exams that make up 85% of your grade. He has videos but they are videos are no help. He grades the homework very heavily so it’s hard to earn the other 15%.
Mr. Berry is amazing!!! I've taken him for Stats 1 and 2 also Microeconomics. Stats is HARD in general. He gives handouts study them not hawkes. I've never had a more caring teacher. Yes his tests are worth most of your grade. As long as your doing the work correctly and show you have some understanding you will pass his tests.
Not a fan at ALL Homework is nothing like the tests. he makes his own test so they have nearly no correlation to homework so come test time your stuck confused reading a complete different format than what youve been having homework on he's not very accessible outside of class ive been on the deans list many times and this class brought my gpa down
1,000/10 recommend it! Prof. Berry is truly the greatest teacher! I was dreading Stats until I took him and now I love it! He is extremely good at explaining and will help you whenever he can! It is clear he is very passionate about what he does and that's what makes him so good! If you try to do good and understand, you will! 100% would take again
I don't understand why he received bad reviews. He explains everything very well and his class is not hard at all. He is also available on Microsoft Teams when you need help. I think this class is probably easier than AP macroeconomics in high school. Just take notes, pay attention in class, and you will be fine.
Dr. Berry was a great professor. Though its true, the homework is nothing like the tests BUT its not supposed to be. Homework is for practice and I do believe his homework assignment do help a lot with practice. This is a super easy class if you study and ask questions. I couldnt be more content with this professor!!
Derek Berry is a great professor. You can tell by the energy that he loves the subject. He took the time to answer any questions we had and was usually pretty quick to respond to messages. Only downside is that the exams are a massive part of your grade (75% IIRC), but they are not too hard as long as you do the homework and study.
I took Mr. Berry for my Stats I class and loved it. I did have a little bit of a hard time with Stats itself like most students do but Mr. Berry was very good about recovering subjects that we didn't fully understand and answered all questions we had! He was good about opening teams meetings (Zoom coorelated) if you could not make it that day!
Berry is very good at explaining exactly what is going to be on the tests. There are only 3 tests and they are your only grades other than the weekly homework that isn't worth but 15% of your grade but that being said. You will know exactly what's on the tests. Come to class and pay attention and you will get a good grade.
Mr. Berry is just an excellent teacher. Stats can sound intimidating, but he explains everything very well. I have taken his two classes and am planning to take BUS 272, too. You will be fine if you show up at class and take notes!
One of my favorite professors, he makes stats way easier than it sounds. Homework is due weekly. He's very helpful in class.
Mr. Berry is a good teacher and explains all topics very thoroughly. The main deciding grades for this class are three exams throughout the semester. I found the material itself to be moderately hard. Make sure you study and take good notes.
Mr. Berry was a very fun class to take. Not much homework and only 3 tests per semester. Breaks everything down into detail and makes his class fun.
Derek Berry is awesome! I didn't think it would be possible for me to enjoy a statistics class as I have dyscalculia and math-heavy classes at UAH have been miserable for me. Derek provides real life applications to his course material in ways that are memorable and interesting. I will definitely be trying to get a seat in his class for Stats 2.
It may just be that everyone has different learning methods but to me Mr.Berry is an amazing teacher he is helpful if you are willing to reach out only reason I ended with a C+ was because I hardly ever studied for the test (bad I know). But to me his teaching methods make a lot of sense b/c stats is pretty hard to me anyway.
He was an awesome teacher! I personally appreciated the fact that he went over things a couple times to make sure everyone was on the same path. He was always willing to explain some more if I had a question. Always take notes, and be aware that he makes up his own questions for tests- but they are fine when you use his homework practice sheets
