a good prof.
very helpful one on one. easy tests and tough assignments.
organized lectures! His notes, examples, and hints in class were great! exams were fair~ A recommended prof! ^^ Too bad he never replies emails.
Who knew that you could laugh so much in a statistics lecture?? Derek made this class interesting AND funny, a rare combination. His notes were good, although you HAD to attend class to write in half of them ;) His midterm was awful, but he realized that and made the final much better. Try to take stats with him!!
A great prof. His lectures were easy to understand, and his notes were well-organized. Lectures were entertaining because he had a lot of jokes to tell. The exams and assignments were fair as well.
Good prof. I liked the notes on web. Hard assignments, but fair test and final. Would like more than 1 mid-term.
Statistics is one of theose subjects which many people just HAVE TO DO, meaning that the interest level isn't there for many. I promise you; before taking his class I thought I would HATE statistics, but the way that he does his lectures makes statistics enjoyable! Assignments and exams are fair.
would highly recommend...funny guy, made stats interesting and bearable =)...assignments were ok and midterms and final were similar to the practice exams
Tests were ok but the final was really hard.Class not curved
Extremely helpful prof, notes are straightforward, exams are fair and usually on the easy side, and he's always in a good mood.
good prof with a sense of humour. love his online notes and hints for midterm/exam. explain ideas in a clear way. highly recommended.
For a potentially hard course such as STAT270, Derek does a really great job in making it interesting and easy to learn. Assignments and tests are fairly easy (similar to samples and suggested problems).
I agree with the person below. He did an excellent job in teaching this course. Just go to lectures and you don't even need to study much and you can have a good grasp of the materials already. A highly recommended prof!
I strongly agree with the past two comments. Derek's friendly manner and grass root approach to statistics makes this course easier than it is considered to be.
Probably the best prof I've ever had. Just to give you an idea how good he was: First third of semester I slacked off. I failed the first midterm. I didn't understand anything and was so lost. Didn't even understand the textbook. I literally was gonna drop it. Then I started listening to him and copying his notes down. Final mark was A-.
Good Prof. Very interactive. Must motivate oneself with school work however in order to keep from falling behind.
Best prof ever!
Derek is nice and helpful. His lectures are easy to understand. Exams and assignment are fair as well. Definitely a good course to take for Q-credit!!!
I really appreciated how he ran his lectures and how he was accessible at all times and encouraged questions. Great class for a Q requirement. Just attend class, do the suggested questions and assignments and you'll do fine.
Fantastic prof. Clear and straight forward. Wish I had him for calc too.
Very good prof - explained all concepts clearly and made a math class engaging with a mixture of real life examples, humour, and good looks. Highly recommend this class
Explains concept clearly. Assignments worth way too little considering for the efforts needed. Exams are not easy.
This prof in one word: Awesome. Explained concepts really well including difficult concepts like double integration. I was skeptical of the poster below when they said that they went from bombing the first MT to an A-. I did just that. Highly recommended. Wished he was my 152 professor. Would've actually learnt something in that class then.
One of the BEST Professors! Highly recommend him. Super-nice, super-helpful, super-clear. His exams consist of questions from the notes and practice exams. Do those, you'll ace the course!!
One of the best prof. at SFU. Tells you exactly what he needs from the students. Lectures are well explained and lots of funny jokes. And, he is a very nice person. If you attend lectures and follow what he repeats in class, you will do well.
Prof Bingham is a really good prof. U should try to take stat 270 with this prof. His lecture notes r really easy to understand and u should go to the class always to copy his notes. U need to study his lecture notes and so all the assignments to do well.He clarifies the tough material very nicely.I learnt alot from this class:)
The best :))
Dr. Bingham's stuff is very useful. It is easy because his notes are impeccable(try study the textbook then you'll know),however you have to be in class and fill the other half.TAs and Dr.Bingham are very accessible, make sure you ask if you have problems.Pay attention in class,do the assignments, understand his notes, then you will do well.
Excellent prof!
Amazing prof, easy tests, good speaker, easy material, nice and humorous guy. I got an A. TAKE STAT 100 WITH THIS MAN
Fair teacher, exams are based on his practice questions, so you better do them! Gives a lot of hints for exams in class, so it's best to attend class. Bingham makes stats that much more interesting and much more bearable. If you're taking stats, MUST take it with him!
He is one of the best profs I've had at SFU. He's a pretty funny guy and he definitely made me want to go to class. I thought I'd do poorly in a stats class but he taught it really well so it was easy. Always do practice questions from the textbook because a lot of them were on his exams.
One of the best profs! Makes me want to take more statistic courses even though I was never interested. Test and exams are fair and if you went to class, you will do super great, if not, you will do fairly well too. Overall, he is just a very nice guy and very patient with students who are a bit slow.
Derek made the course fairly easy and straightforward. His exams are very fair as it's based mostly on problems seen before. Lectures are very informative for the exams and he tries his best to make them as entertaining as possible. There wasn't too much work involved in the course. All in all, a very great and fair prof.
He's really a nice and helpful professor!!!truly recommend!!
One of the best prof's I've ever had! He makes stats enjoyable and has such a great personality.
Bing is the man! Loved taking this course with him. Would definetely take another course with him in the future
I adore him! He is an amazing prof with a great sense of humour. His lectures are super clear and he makes everything easy to understand. He has surprisingly made stats my favourite class this semester! Totally recommend taking this class with him.
wow. assignments are relatively easy. the midterm isnt exactly hard but they mark it so hard. barely passed. do not recommend this class.
Prof is great. TA Doesn't know English & can't accept anything on the midterm unless it's word for word same as the sample answer. When your answer literally means the same thing, she tries to distort your logic and claims that your answer can be misinterpret as something else. Keeps leaning on desk and play candy crush on her iPad in the workshop.
Great teacher! he made math not boring. Super easy to understand and he goes over everything slowly. There is a lot of assignments, but easy. he has a good voice (like should be on commercials)
Very clear and organized notes and lectures. Textbook is rarely helpful, I only used it for the assignment questions. Overall the assignments, exams, and class were very easy, and everything came naturally to me. However, my friend who was struggling found his lectures helpful. The professor is easy and knows how to teach.
Need a B-Sci course? TAKE THIS CLASS! Derek is a fantastic prof who ensures that he teaches each topic with clarity. He explains everything so well in lecture and office hours that there shouldn't be anything you don't understand. He is very organized as well. There are weekly assignments that are quite manageable. not curved but you wont need it
He is a very nice guy! This course is mostly based on the examples in the textbook, and some of his lecture slides. Got C on the first mt and C+ for the second one, however the final was easier than expected, and ended up with a B- in the course, and I am very satisfied with it. I would recommend this course for people who are interested in math:).
Most of the questions on his midterms and the final are based on examples from his lectures, and text book. If you do questions from the text you should be fine. Clarification is encouraged, and he is straight forward. Slides are found online, but have blank spaces for you to fill out, which you need to attend lecture for.
Pretty easy course for those who like mathematics/plugging in numbers. Studied an hour for final and got an A. That said, basic algebra should be easy.
best prof in sfu by far. Go to class, do your suggested problems and the assignments. Easily get an A.
He is such a great professor. The way he teaching is very clear but a little bit slow sometimes. First Midterm was a little bit hard.. Anyways, great teacher, easy course, please take his class!!
One of the best profs at SFU, I highly recommend taking a class with him. Easy assignments due every week, midterms and final are based on questions similar to his examples.
Derek is possibly the best professor at SFU; he knows his stuff and DOES deliver it very well. His assignments are not too bad, and his exams are VERY fair. If you know enough math to solve an equation, and you do your work, this course is a piece of cake... and if math isn't your strength, you can still do great if you attend lecture! 10/10
Understand that if you take stats with Derek, and you still end up saying stats is hard, it will be WAY MORE complicatedconfusing if you take it with any other stats prof. Even at a 400 level course, he teaches using simple language and relatable examples. The tip is to learn from his PowerPoint slides and lectures rather than from the textbook
I LOVE DEREK! He is so adorable and hilarious, he made statistics a bearable course. I was dreading taking stats (it was inevitable for me), but I am so fortunate to have Derek as my professor. He is always willing to help students, gives rather entertaining lectures (that's how good he is, he made statss my favourite course) and knows his stuff.
Amazing prof -- exams are based on course content (no surprises!). He genuinely cares about his students and wants them to excel. If you want to do well in stats, take them with this professor.
I didn't do well in this class because I was really lazy. However, he seems like he is the best professor to take stats with. His exam questions come straight from the assignments and practice problems. (maybe I should have done them) make sure to attend lecture because he leaves some slides blank and you have to fill them in yourself
Derek's lectures were clear and had lots of examples. It's important to attend the lectures to get the answers for the examples so you can study them. The midterm and final questions all come from the weekly assignments, suggested textbook problems and examples in class making the tests very fair.
He is a great professor. Very willing to help by answering questions in class and in office hours. The homework assignments are very relevant to the tests, and he provided last years midterms as the optional assignment before the actual midterm and final. He is a super nice prof, and tries to be funny. His annotated notes are quite good.
Best Stats prof at SFU. He is funny and not intimidating at all, don't be afraid of asking him 'dumb' questions. Makes everything clear by repeating important points in lecture. If you get lower than a B, you know you're not even trying. This is the easiest course at SFU. Textbook is helpful and there will be questions from there as homework.
Derek is a great professor and clearly cares about his students. He's always willing to answer questions and always repeats himself on important topics in lecture, to make things clear. Exam questions come directly from his assignments.
He is worth every cent I paid Sfu for this course and I can't say that about many profs. He's a very engaging lecturer and knows how to test students on the material. I would recommend taking any class with him for a positive learning experience :) you won't regret it
Great prof! His lectures were really clear and the notes were easy to understand. The midterms were the perfect difficulty. Not too hard. Assignments are easy.
Derek is awesome! He cares about his students and goes above and beyond to ensure students success. He also gives advice on joining the work force which he doesn't have to do. Plus he explains concepts really well. Great prof!
Great prof who gives incredibly clear lectures. Do the work and you'll get an A easily.
Genuinely one of the nicest people I've ever met in an academic sense. The course was a practical overview of the major topics in the subject area and was quite good. Cannot recommend strongly enough.
Derek is an amazing professor who seems to genuinely care about his students.
Hands down the best professor in SFU. The reason that I am confident in working in a stats related job is because of him.
I took Derek Bingham's class quite a few semesters again for stat 203. I am not a math person by any means, and had not taken a math course in four years. After I failed the first midterm he and I would meet after class (even without office hours) and he would coach me through the course material. Hands down the best, most caring prof I've met.
He is the best!!
No more words needed. I love him, he is the best prof.
Funny guy, lectures and power point were recorded and posted. For a boring class he made it a bit interesting, I took it cause I had too for graduation, and it was not as bad as I thought it would be. I do not like math concepts so that is really saying something.
He's a real gem. I love him!!!
Derek seems optimal for in-person lectures. He is very knowledgeable and knows how to clearly explain concepts. He appears to dislike (and lacks the resources for) online learning - using a mouse to write notes, but that doesn't take much away from his ability to teach. Exams are fair, but lacks prep such as practice exams and questions.
Derek is overall a nice prof, he goes throught his notes and lectures well, but he writes with his mouse which is eh. The only thing for marks is quizzes and final. However idea of seperating quizzes into parts is the dumbest idea, as it takes more time to upload than write. Also the textbook is useless, and its better to use the previous stats one
The class was made up of 4 exams and one final. Exams were extremely fair. Derek is a very nice prof, would highly recommend him.
I highly recommend this prof if you are not necessarily strong in math. He explains concepts well and creates tests fairly.
I hate stats but Derek was a really good prof in how he taught the course. He was clear in what he expected. The only bad thing I can say is that there were a few typos in his notes, other than that he was quite a solid choice. 4 quizzes and 1 final exam. The quizzes were around average in terms of difficulty but the final was honestly a breeze.
Derek jumps all over the place during his lectures. Concepts are super easy to understand, but quiz wording is really confusing; intentionally worded to throw you off. The final exam is relatively easy though.
Derek was such a great prof, his lectures were entertaining and informative. You will need the textbook to go more in depth for a few things, but overall great prof. The class was made up of a couple quizzes and a final (which was so easy).
Derek is a good prof who actually cares about students. The exams were pretty straightforward and manageable. The quizzes were a bit more difficult than the final exams, but if you do all the suggested problems you'll do well.
He is a real gem!
Derek definitely knows the material he's teaching, and is able to explain it in a way that is understandable (for the most part). His tests are very fair in terms of asking questions on exactly what he said would be there, and doesn't add any trick questions. He also tries to minimize the calculus exposure whenever possible, which is great!
Derek is a great prof for STAT 270. Fair exams and great lecturer, would highly recommend him over the other STAT 270 profs.
Derek is a professor that actually cares about his students, and wants everyone to do well. To do well just practice his practice midterms, and assignments as his tests are commonly copy and pasted from here. Overall a great teacher!
Exams are rather difficult and this course is not curved at all. There are no assignments to help boost the grades. If you messed up the midterms you will probably end up with a C- or lower
The course grade relies fully on midterms and the final, but there were practice tests provided. Lectures are structured with some examples but practicing the problems related to the lectures will be your best bet.
He is a no-nonsense kind of guy. Just show up to lectures and pay attention and you should do okay. If you want to do really well you will need to go to office hours and the stat workshop. This is a difficult course, but Derek can explain things really well. Don't fall behind or you are done.
Derek is a great statistics professor. His lectures are entertaining and he provides a lot of real-life examples. I struggled a lot during the semester, but he helped me a lot outside of class during the office hours and replying to my emails.
Derek took over my STAT 270 class for another professor who was on strike. He is a really, really nice guy, and he comes off as very welcoming/caring. His examples were funny and relatable, and it is very evident that he cares about his students. His slides could be better, but 270 is also a hard class that requires you to put in a lot of effort.
Derek is an amazing professor. It's amazing how he genuinely cares about every student and does not have any any bias towards specific students unlike many other professors at SFU. He did take a while to grade everything but I would say he is fair to his students. Great lectures as well!
