I got an A in this class and I studied off of his notes only plus or minus a few extra tidbits that i added on. His exams are pretty straightforward. however he answers a lot of questions during class when really he should be focusing on the lecture. as long as you show up everyday, and pay attention you should do fine.

I can say his class is really easygoing;; I can also say if someone got C or D in this class.. she or he didn't study at all... If someone got B in this class.. she or he might study his note once;; If you want A in this class;; read his note just third time;; that's enough;;

Boyer rocks! If you just show up, rewrite the notes before exams and tests, and can try to pay attention and perform the labs you will do great. He is a super humble and nice guy who is always there to help and answer questions! Its not the easiest class, but if you are a decent student that can pay attention you will do just fine.

Hardest class I’ve ever had!!! Mr. Boyer is very knowledgeable and a nice guy, but his tests are really tough! Most of the people who get A’s already have some kind degree in science and are going back to school to pursue Healthcare field prerequisites. Try to take it at GWC or Coastline.

Cares about students, luvs2teach! Fair! Labs use whole time. Final's cumula. Lecture tests, essays, & quiz are tricky & indepth. Your understanding directly reflected in your grade. "A" understanding of Microbio earns "A" grade. Most get B&C's. Tests Q's incorporate multiple concepts, you must know/memorize/understand all material. No Extra Credit

I think Boyer is a great teacher. I dont know what is up with the kids in the 114 class. Everybody in 210 thinks hes great, and its 210. The material is pretty challenging, but he really lets you know what you need to do. Watch out for tricky wording on exams, and DO USE the book. His notes are reliable to get a B, but read the book.

Derek is a cool guy and a good teacher. He is a little OCD, but that's a good thing in a teacher. His notes are clear and he gives good and memorable analogies for vague concepts. Plus, he's not hard on the eyes, so you kind of want to go to class. :) i would definitely recommended him!

Derek Boyer is a great teacher. Although sometimes he looses his point, he is a great lecture. I also did not have him for lab, but my friends who did said he was great. I also thought he was very helpful during his office hours. I would suggest taking this teacher.

Pretty challenging class, which involves a lot of outside studying. He helps by posting his lecture notes online if you miss a day. Tests are very involved and require a lot of studying. He is a very knowledgable instructor though and it shows that he enjoys teaching the class. Did not take him for the lab but I imagine its similar to lecture.

He's a nice guy but he can lecture off tangent sometimes. The subject in itself is grueling with a lot of material to learn such as in lab. I studied my brains off to get the grade that I wanted. His notes are available online but I advise to go to class to listen, write and reread it later to really make the material concrete when it comes around

I enjoyed this class. Had to drop it because I dropped my lab class. Teacher is friendly and approachable. If you can take him for lecture and LAB. Good guy. Really cares about his students. Doesn't always stick to his point sometimes. A little bit of a push over. The class is not difficult at all but I wouldn't call it a piece of cake. With normal study habits you should do fine. If you think this class is hard try pursuing another career outside of the medical field.

Very nice, somewhat easy, and talkative teacher. I went to his office and left an hour later. No joke. His mom's a nursing teacher @ cypress so if you have questions about it, ask him. He really loves micro so if you have any questions, he probably has the answer. Also, his jokes are VERY AWESOME, that's one thing I will miss about his class.

Passionate professor. Has been teaching at OCC only a few yrs so he's still trying to adjust his material. Very knowledgable, talkative, and sincerely wants people to learn and love Microbio. He posts his lectures online but attendance is CRITICAL to understand his notes (they're bullet pts and difficult to decipher w/out attending lecture).

No book needed- only use for essays. Attend class. Very helpful, but material can be extremely hard. I often studied everything, and he Still managed to throw new stuff on there-know it backwards&fowards. But its fun stuff to learn and he teaches it well. Don't expect grades to be posted immediately.

Mr. Boyer is one of the most approachable teachers at OCC. If you have trouble with the material, it is not because of his teaching style. Basically if you do not do well it is because your study habits may be lacking. He is genuinely nice and will help with any question you have.

This class is NOT easy! There is a great deal of information that you MUST know in detail. His tests are very tricky but you learn SO MUCH! Boyer is extremely knowledgeable, very enthusiastic about micro, and is more than helpful if you need it. You really don't need the book. Everything is on the overhead.

This last semester I took more classes than I could handle. As a result, I struggled through most classes all the way to the end. Professor Boyer was outgoing, helpful and understanding. He's willing to go the distance and help his students, if your willing to help yourself. I've never had a better professor at any college.

Let this be a warning! DO NOT SPILL bacteria in this class or you will die from humiliation as Boyer yells & chases you all the way to the sink to disinfect. Course material feels a bit rushed & hard to absorb all info. Overall lectures are very good & pertain to real life. Tests are hard but overall a good teacher, just don't spill, trust me.

Class was very difficult for me and I am an A/B student. The lectures are extremely dry and the material is complex make sure your mentally ready to study going into the class. He gives a sheet out before the test with approximately 10 essay questions which he chooses 2/3 from and puts on the test! MAKE SURE YOU DO THEM! Very approachable and nice.

He's funny, nice, and caring toward his students. I took both microbio lab and lecture with him, and it does take quite an amount of effort in his class to do well. A lot of memorizing, but if you understand the concepts, you should be fine. You might face trouble if you have no background in bio, though.

AMAZING professor. I got a B in the class, and I know If I didn't have a health issue I could of easily gotten an A. He's so caring, so sweet. I really enjoyed his class. This class is NOT easy, but Derek is extremely helpful, caring, and really wants you to pass. He knows almost everyone's name by the 3rd week of class and is a very organized teacher. He may get off track and start telling his hilarious stories, but you'd be missing out if you took Micro without Derek! Definitely recommend!

You will never find a more caring professor in this campus. He's very passionate about the subject and will spend hours with you after class helping if thats what it takes for you to pass. He wants his students to do well. He's not the most organized professor, but that's minor in comparison to the quality of instruction he brings to the class.

Boyer is such a great professor, you can really tell that he loves his job. Lecture tests are based right off the pp, I got low B's on them but did really well on his lab practical which got me an A in the class. He's really helpful and will even go over the material will you to tell you what will and won't be on the tests. Work hard, get that A!

One of the best bio prof's I've ever had. Loves what he does and will help you through thick and thin. Lots of easy points at the end too with "mini projects" to boost up your grade. Tests are pretty hard though but just print out the lecture and study hard!

Derek is an awesome professor! It is a microbiology class though so don't think because he is hot and nice you'll get an A. You deffinately need to work for it. Take very thorough lab notes and you'll pass the practicums with flying colors! The lecture exams are a more difficult but study his handouts and read the chapter and you'll do great!

One of the most caring and approachable professors on campus. His office hours were constantly packed with students and he made sure to make time for each and every one of them. Charming, nice, and caring teacher. That being said, you will student about 15-20 hours a week for that B-A grade.

Outstanding teacher. Don't consider anyone else if you're taking microbiology. He's very passionate about the subject, and loves to talk about recent discoveries in the field. Energetic and enthusiastic, while very easy to approach. VERY fair with tests; if he thinks a question isn't good he'll scrub it off the test. Definitely take him.

Boyer is such a great professor I took him for lab and lecture. Lecture exams are on his power points plus additional notes that he writes in during class. Plus he chooses the free response from a study guide he provides! Lab is easy too just memorize how each test looks (test tubes, Petri dish, etc) and also the notes you take during the lab.

Amazing! I had Prof. Boyer for lecture and lab, try to get him for lab, the tests are exactly from what he writes on the board, so you must attend lab. Lab practicums aren't bad, stations are based off of the labs and seeing everything. Lecture tests aren't too bad, make sure to study all notes, He is so caring, kind, & patient. & he's hot! Got A!

Honestly, he's a cool dude with a great personality. However, the way he formats his tests are not helpful at all. His multiple choice answers are very tricky. Also he is horrible at updating grades. You won't be able to consistently track your progress in the class until week 15, and by then it'll be too late to make any changes.

If you must take this class, take it with Boyer. He's a very nice, genuine person who cares for his students. Lecture is pretty boring, but you can show up and be on your phone. For tests, it's fairly easy, you just have to study the power points and the study guide which is extra credit. Do the study guides because the test is based off of that.

Having Micro as my first science class in college was a huge slap in the face, but having someone like Boyer teach the class made it definitely made it enjoyable. His lectures/Lab typically go off track, but they're either one amusing, or two super interesting. Overall pretty difficult class but he's a stud, you get what you put in

He takes his time to make sure everyone understands the subject for both Microbiology and Principles of Biology. MUST STUDY FOR MICRO. He does his part, do yours.

Best teacher I have had at OCC. If you pay attention and print out powerpoint notes you can get an A. A lot of material but Derek does an amazing job at covering the topics. If you need help outside of the class he is always willing to help, he will even miss his lunch break just to help out students. Funny guy and great professor.

Very knowledgeable but goes WAY off topic so many times. Show up, do your own thing, but study the powerpoint. For Basic Microbio, you don't need the book. Just show up to class first and ask. If you know and can recall the powerpoint(understand the overall point of the ppt) and can do the quizzes and study guide, you will get an A on each test.

By far the funniest and most relatable teacher at OCC! If you get a chance to have him as your lab teacher take advantage of it. He is the absolute best and cares about each one of his students. He has quizzes every week right when you walk in the door so always review the past lab! However, if everyones seems like they are struggling he will help

Lab manual helpful but not required. Quizzes and unknown project are straight-forward. His lectures are interesting and full of real life applications, but they are not cut to the chase. He is approachable, truly cares for his students, and will go the extra mile to help you succeed. Amazing prof and I wish I could take all my sciences with him!

Boyer was a good professor, very helpful and accessible DURING class. If you email him, you probably wont ever get an answer though. He goes off topic during lecture alot, and I never got my grades inputted into the last week of class. Very difficult to gauge how you're doing in the class.

Microbiology 114, Boyer was awesome to have as the professor for lab. He is very passionate about the subject, so, he is able to be helpful and interesting and he knows he material very well.

He is an awesome professor, very enthusiastic about teaching and caring! Does drop some quizzes but its very lecture heavy! Its all about how much time and work you put in. He explains everything clearly. However, just like any 5 credit course, it aint an easy A.

Professor Boyer is passionate about microbiology and overall amazing. Online transition was difficult but he did everything he could to support this students. He really wants everyone to do well. It is a 5 unit course, so you have to attend lecture and study to succeed. Exams and quizzes in both lab and lecture but he drops a few quizzes. Take him!

Boyer is a great teacher and is very good at explaining the material. Lecture videos are a bit long usually 1.5 - 2 hours. Study guides are extremely helpful. Very kind and flexible he would move the schedule around to accommodate students and let me retake a quiz I had missed. Very nice and one of the best at OCC

It was hard not to pass. He gives you everything you need to succeed. Even goes over exam answers and curves grades. He makes it easy to understand the material. I dont understand students that dont receive an A. Honestly the easiest A I have ever recieved in all of my nursing prereqs classes. Clear information on whats tested, and uses the same material as another professor at occ, Dr. Wells. Watch her videos on YouTube. Those who did not get an A were just lazy. Hes really understanding as well.

I almost drop his class at first because my first quiz is F grade :)) but that is because I'm lazy and I thought I can find information on the internet. Nope! I learned a lesson and I start watching his video, Dr. Wells. His quiz is his power point. Just make sure you understand the materials in ppt. So many extra credit.

Prof. Boyer is a great professor. He loves talking about Microbiology. He is off-topic at times, but all relevant to the subject and I enjoyed listening to him talking. Quizzes and exams are pretty tough and require your understanding of the concept to do well in this class.

He is very passionate about teaching. I will admit, he does try to give his students answers on quizzes like hints and I don't really have anything against it, but it defeats the purpose of truly learning. An exam is meant to see if you learned something. Giving hints throughout the quizzes kind of irritate me.Other than that,he is a great teacher.

Such a great professor; he's extremely caring & an overall rad guy. Lectures were cool & he makes good analogies. No homework, exams were bit tough but do-able. Labs were fun, all u have to do is carry out the experiment. Study guides worth 3 EC points. Did not use the books very much but can be helpful. He is super understanding. Def recommend! :)

Professor Boyer is one of the greatest professors I've had in my time at OCC. He shows great enthusiasm towards what he teaches, and is willing to go the extra mile if students are curious. I've never had an issue with fairness on his exams. Though keep in mind, this is a difficult class, and your test scores will make or break it.

Professor Boyer is very kind & helpful. The grade for lecture and Lab is based off of quizzes and exams. They are straight forward, but study for those because there is no homework to help with your grade just a couple extra credit opportunities not worth much points. Lab is getting thru the experiment, but nothing needed to turn in. Good luck!

Heavily recommend this "fungi" (fun guy) because of his lectures. He takes the time to explain any question or concern anyone has and loves participation.

I heard about this professor from my bf who took him for his major class and Boyer is a really good professor for BIO 114. He's super chill and tells stories during class that relate to the material. He understands the stress the class is under and tries to give us the run down of material in a good time frame. The material is really interesting.

Loved Professor Boyer. Micro is already an information-heavy course, he did a great job to explain the material. There is no homework during the week so the tests are VERY heavy. His tests are a little challenging wording-wise and are formed to make you confused, but once I understood how he writes his test it was a breeze. 10/10 class+professor.

Professor Boyer was amazing! He has specific way of teaching so you know what to expect on the exam. 6 total exams and your grade is heavily reliant on how well you do on them, but Professor Boyer gives you a ton of opportunities for extra credit. He even curves exams and gives points back during test reviews. Wouldn't have gotten an A without it.

I took him back in Spring 2022 when OCC was at half capacity. I never though I'd like microbiology until I took his class! He is a little chaotic, but he is very nice and is always willing to answer any questions. His exams were hard, but if you put the time into study you'll do fine. Lab was my favorite part of the class.

Highly recommend Prof Boyer. He's hilarious and understandable. He always gives extra time to explain if we are unclear about the lecture. The tests and exams were heavy. Be prepared and study ahead, then you will be fine. I found Microbiology interesting throughout every class he taught. It's easy to get an A if you study well.

Professor Boyer is absolutely amazing. I took his microbiology class mid-covid. He has hilarious comments on lectures that make you remember the content for exams and just funny side notes in general. Labs were really fun. He is super helpful if you have any questions and don't understand something. Best professor at OCC in my opinion :)

Such a fair grader, won't let students go into a test if he hasn't fairly covered all material. He'll always give credit for unfair questions. He makes amazing studyguides, if you answer all of the questions on there, you'll absolutely get an A. His lectures are supplemented with entertaining, relevant stories that really make the material stick.

Professor Boyer is very kind and generous. This course is loaded with complex info but he makes it interesting. Don't be afraid to ask him questions! Just make sure to communicate with him and he will help you succeed. Study those power points and you're golden. Also highly recommend Dr. Wells videos on YT to review for exams and quizzes.

Boyer is a great professor. He sets his students up for success, and for them to really learn the material. He is generous with extra credit. His lectures are very interesting, but sometimes he'll go off on side tangents. Sometimes, we ran out of time for lectures. I highly recommend watching his and Dr. Wells' YouTube videos.

Great guy! Super funny and is very passionate about the subject. He recommended a textbook, but I, and nobody I knew needed it. Exams and quizzes were straight from presentations and study guides so they were easy. Very fair grader and gives EC. Micro is a hard (ish) subject though, so be prepared to study!! Labs were also super fun

Professor Boyer makes microbiology engaging with his witty lectures. While the content can be challenging, his study guides and willingness to clarify concepts are extremely helpful. Unstuck AI also proved invaluable for test prep. Overall, a rewarding course worth taking.

If you are looking to take Micro at Orange Coast College I would definitely recommend Dr.B. As long as you study the slides and take note on what he says could be on the exams during lecture you are set! Don't be afraid to ask questions. Micro can be a tough course but he's great! I would recommend him to everyone.

Professor Boyer was an amazing professors and one of my favorites. You can tell he absolutely loves what he is does. He puts his 100% in his classes and cares for his students. But you have to put in the work and study. His exams are pretty tough but if you put the work, you will do great!!

Prof. Boyer definitely made microbio my favorite class ever! Aside from studying important concepts and lab techniques, he doesn't demand excessive or unnecessary assignments at all. His passion for teaching shows in how much detail he provides during lectures, but it's not overwhelming because he provides study guides. He's very approachable too.

I previously dropped my microbiology class, but when I retook it with Professor Derek, it was a completely different experience. He is so kind, knowledgeable, and always ready to help. His lectures are clear, engaging, and very well-organized. I truly enjoyed being in his class and will miss it. I highly recommend him.

I already had a master's in engineering when I took this class, and it quickly became one of the most enjoyable courses I've had. Professor. Boyer teaches by doing live Google searches in class to show real cases, making the material highly relevant. Labs are an energizing part of this course. It's an easy A if you study. I truly loved this class

I had this course for my Respiratory Program, basically an intro to Microbiology, and I 1000% am now interested in the majors course if I can find the time throughout my program. Boyer is an amazing Professor and is now on the fave list at OCC. He made lecture and lab so entertaining. Be prepared to learn a lot and to laugh in his class!

I can't recommend this professor enough. I already have to all the pre-nursing students I know. Microbiology is an information packed course but Professor Boyer makes the information clear and concise. He is compassionate towards his students and has loads of resources on his canvas to help students achieve an A!

Professor Boyer is one of my favorite science teachers ever. He is passionate and caring and understanding. He made microbio very enjoyable and Im so happy that the things he taught in class are so applicable in clinical settings (i feel that sm at work in a clinic). He really will set you up for success :) Take him! I highly recommended!!
