FUN CLASS. If you don't get an A you should be slapped. Great teacher, never looked over my notes...lecture was so much fun that i remembered everything and did well on the tests.

Extremely easy class. He basically gives you the test because every word, sentence, phrase on his notes is what appears on the test exactly the way it is on the notes. You get to learn the history of rock n' roll in a relaxed, easy-going atmosphere.

Derek's class can be fun, can be boring at times. He lectures totally off of the overhead/computer-it would be more fun if he just talked. He lets you know how bad the white man has treated the black man. He should lay off of that subject.

Great class, very good teacher. My only complaint would be that his tests aren't consistent. You really never know what to study for because you can't tell what he thinks is important for each section.

Powerpoints very effective. Very easy, but alot to do for that class. Website Review, four tests, Record Review, music journal, & music group presentation. No cumulative final. His very nice, fun, and entertainable music teacher.

Anyone who doesnt get an A in this class is a straight moron, simple as that! Make flashcards of his powerpoint notes, and you will get 100% on his tests. Dont miss class though, cause missing the notes will hurt you on the test. Great teacher,very funny

Fun class, but it does require work. Most of the notes are on his website throughout the semester. Do not miss class, and you should be okay. You do have to study for tests. Derek is an excellent instructor and person. You won't regret taking this class.

Mr Cannon is a great guy. He has great sense of humor and loves music. He makes this class lots of fun by letting you listen to samples. Take the notes and do the assignments and you'll do fine. I definitely reccomend this class and professor!

You can tell Cannon is passionate about music. You listen to musical examples and watch movies in class all the time. The tests are directly from his powerpoint so no need for the textbook. Just an all around fun class and the final is not comprehensive.

Derek is a great instructor and is very respectful and considerate. He's not your mama though so behave like a grown-up in class. Easy A if you show up for class, pay attention and do the assignments. Very easy on the eyes too.

Class was a breeze. He always let us out early and the test are multiple choice. There is only two papers and a project. I would talke this class for an GPA boost.

Hot Brotha! VERY knowlegable and professional. He loves what he does and it shows! Would definately recommend his classes. He has expectations that you'll study and know what he teaches, but it is incredibly fun to go to class and to listen to him. He is very organized and great at explaining. I couldn't have taken a better class. He makes it fun!!

I have never met a teacher that really wants to make sure you get a passing grade, and leave with more knowledge then you expected. He is wonderful!! It is a challenging class, but definitley worth it if you are interested in music!!

Pretty nice teacher overall. I found the class boring, but that's just me. Very helpful, if you miss one class go to office hours to review. Tests are not that easy, so do extra credit and do well on take home assignments. No out of class concerts or anything. Very funny guy. Likes class feedback, but that's a good thing.

He's so funny and he makes the class really interesting. Some of the people who found him boring were probably in a class where the other classmates were deadbeats, because if people are interactive the class can be very fun. I loved this class, this guy is awesome

Super cool! At first i didn't like the class because I wasn't interested in earlier music. 40's, 50's...etc.. however, later it turned out great and had a lot of fun participating in his class. Derek is nice, funny, and kinda cute. I totally would take him again!

He's very patient and understanding and will take time to explain everything if you don't understand. His class has is really fun even though it's theory which is not fun :( He's a great teacher!

One of the best teachers i have experienced. Everything he teaches he has another way that will make you understand it. He's available at any time if you need help. finally, He is highly recomended by many people if you want to learn music theory.

First thing is first, Derek is a hottie!!! Not only is he the best looking teacher I have had thus far, he is the best! He understands students. The class is fun, and informative. An excellent teacher of jazz and a fantastic musician, too. The jazz class was not only informative but most of the class was interactive. 2 concerts, a jazz journal plus one extra credit concert. Read test questions, carefully. I bought the text and kept it because of the information. I highly recommend Derek Cannon.

Fun class to take with good teacher. Good Music and the history is very interesting. He teaches from a projector though which is can be lame at times. Coming to class is a must because of lecture. Tests are pretty easy though. Cannon is a cool professor who genuinely seems to love what he does

Easy class! Do NOT by the book. I didn't open it once. Mr. C is a very cool. Always happy. The reason why I got a C is due to not playing attention to notes. Know the notes and do the concert reports...you'll pass with an A.

Save your money and dont buy the textbook. Everything you will need for the exams is on his powerpoint slides. His a real chill guy, and his class is pretty cool as well. However, sometimes the class is too easy that students miss too many days and it hurts their grades. Tests are all flashcard work from his powerpoint. You will need to study.

Derek has a mind like a steel trap and is full of musical trivia. He is an awesome trumpet player and very adept jazz pianist. He is very nice and cares a lot. Goes out of his way for his students. I have taken classes I didnt need just because he was teaching.

I'm mostly math and sciencey stuff, but this class was a breeze. Derek is a really good instructor. Everything in in powerpoint presentation and he points out what stuff you need to know verbatim for the test. As long as you turn in all the assignments and they fit the criteria you're bound to get an A.

As a jazz major, this is the best class I've ever taken. Derek is the man. He'll expand your musical mentality. A monster musician with a genius mind.

Derek is awesome. Hist of Rock was such an interesting class. I'm not one to attend class a lot, but I was there for every meeting, because he makes class so entertaining. not alot of work, you do have to write a record review, but its actually a very fun assignment. You get really into it. Take him!

By far the best teacher I have had at Grossmont! He's hilarious and very easy to listen to. He really wants his students to ask questions, and He's constantly getting you prepared for the next class. Once you're done with the class, you're gonna miss going.

Derek is the best teacher in the entire school in my honest opinion. He is incredibly nurturing and gets to know each student, if they put in the effort. He has an infectious positive energy that will make you feel at ease when you are in his class. 10/10

HIGHLY RECOMMEND. Corona never stopped him! He kept the same exact structure online and in class. Lecture, study guides (never due and quiz. He loves feedback because he truly enjoys what he does. Willing to help at all means necessary , do the work and youll NEVER struggle in his class. This guy is absolutely amazing and has a great personality!

Dereks lectures were interesting and engaging. There are study guides for each lecture, and he will tell you what you should write down for them so you can easily pass the quizzes and exams. He offered a couple of extra credit opportunities as well.

If you love hip-hop you're going to love the professor & the class. This class is super fun & his lectures consist of PowerPoints which made things really easy to follow. The quizzes are easy & overall would 100% recommend.

Hes a great professor however if you need to be absent the course may be difficult as all the notes you need are given during lectures & not uploaded

His lectures were really thorough and interesting, he's also a very funny guy. You can tell he cares a lot about what he does. There were pretty few assignments in the class and most of the grade came down to the tests. He also tended to repeat things from prior lectures, but I'll give him a break since he hadn't taught the class in years.

Professor Cannon genuinely cares about this class and the information that you are expected to retain. The class is not too difficult if you pay attention, almost a guaranteed A or B. Derek is easy to talk to, and will help you out if you need it.

Took MUS 001 He is very caring, makes sure everyone fully understands content & is happy to review. We were graded on a midterm quiz and a final exam, for both of them he told us what to expect & gave an ungraded review test before. Super chill and fun! make sure you participate, the content is interesting and useful

Derek is AWESOME! Such a passionate and kind person. His lectures were fun, interesting, and easy to understand. There was very little homework (which may be my only complaint here tbh...) He explains everything wonderfully and is very open to feedback and questions. I would 100% recommend Derek any day and everyone I know would too!

Professor Cannon makes the class engaging and doable with study guides, extra credit, and helpful lectures. I found Unstuck ai great for test prep.

This is the best class I've taken. Cannon is real, funny, and makes you feel comfortable. He genuinely cares about what he teaches and often shares personal stories. As a professional jazz musician, he brings passion and experience to the class.

As mentioned in one of his lectures, there's a big difference between music teachers that are musicians themselves, and those who aren't. As he is a trumpet player, you can definitely tell through his demonstrations and performances. Not to mention he is very caring towards students, and does a good job at making his class the best it can be.
