How can you say he is lazy...he sweats everyday running around the class.
He is not lazy; he stays up late to mark your quizzes!!
I found him sooooooooo boring and was very rude when i went to get help. Not clear at all!
Either the class is pretty easy or he makes it look easy... plus he sweats a lot too (check out the armpit area)
He seems like a nice guy in class, but really unapproachable in person. Overall, a pretty good prof. He's gotta be the sweatiest guy on the planet. It can be freezing outside, and he can still look like he's doing a hundred situps or somethin.
Very hard to track down to meet with, but took time in his office to help me through any problems I had. Funny guy and great to talk to. Pretty clear in lectures, but a little hand-wavy in situations (just mentioned the topic in passing, not in any depth)
Well, he does seem like a nice guy. But really, i don't think he teaches in detail enough...he just skims through everything and expects u to understand it but of course the TESTS always are much much harder
lectures loud and clear, efficient teaching, but the final was very hard

He looks like Peter Griffin. All he needs is a double chin and the laugh. He's also a good prof with clear notes and he's a nice guy too =)
A very good prof, very clear in lectures. Good notes but tricky quizzes.
He is a pretty helpful guy, but the class is damn hard...lol, but yeah, overall good teacher.
-clear lectures, good thorough class notes, hard midterm (49% avg) and harder final, good quizzes that can increase ur mark. the textbook is a bit useless, the model set is totally useless. Study the notes well!!!
Notes, while decent, could be better structured. Receptive to questions, yet able to prevent them from taking over the lecture. Midterms are tricky and final is one to watch for.
He's kinda like a giant teddy bear... Reasonable quizzes, notes are ok
He's only nice to you if you participate in his class. He was very rude when i asked him to recheck my midterm. He excludes some material from his notes and then you don't study the material thinking you're not going to be tested on it. Overall BAD professor. VERY BAD.
TAKE HIM AS YOUR PROF!! he is number one at two things at UBC: he is the best chemistry prof by far, and he is also the sweatiest prof out there..haha...seriously the guy is great, i laughed through half the classes, he's really funny, found the class hard, but thast generic for chem121
Very clear in the lectures. But the final was a killer, even for those that intend to pursue inorganic chem as their Hon. Thesis (me). There should have been a bonus question on the final. I didn't like memorizing the periodic table.
Horrible and boring prof. Totally unclear. Although the final was extremely easy.
really interesting material, very easy to understand notes, so the textbook is not as needed, easy tests, got a B+ in the class without too much effort, overall a pretty easy class and a GREAT professor!!! Highly recommended!
He's ok, I guess. Very funny guy, very comical. He really does care about his students. However, when you ask him a question, he explains it the way he understands, not the way you understand. He makes good use of classroom resources. He could give more homework problems to practice though.
He's a good prof, he explains things clearly and has very consise notes. The midterm was ok but the final was hard...the course overall is hard..but he can make it better by giving decent quizzes and good lectures...
good prof. explains things we need to know, not extra stuff. easy to understand and helpful.
He teaches pretty much the same as in chem 202: notes spread over handouts and class notes, although it didn't bother me as much this time. I learned better from his notes than Legzdins. His exams were harder, although we DID get 10 marks for filling in the periodic table.
The jokes and pit stains aside, Gates was an unreasonable prof. I was enrolled into the class a month after it started w/o knowing that I'd be taking the course and he wouldn't take 5 mins to email me the class notes after approaching him in person. After that, whenever I asked a question in class he would stare me down, and not even anwser me.
Talks very loudly and angrily when doing/finishing tests. I have no idea what he is talking about when he is trying to explain equations that skip approximately 10 steps in between. Hence hard to follow. ! :( His class makes me not want to watch family guy any more.
great teaching style
great prof =]
well organized, great prof.
What bugged me was the fact that he only had 2 office hours a week for the 500 students he taught - it was difficult to get ahold of him because a lot of people went. Overall however, he was supportive to his students as much as possible. He gives hard quizzes, but they're only worth 7.5% of your grade and will prepare you WELL for the final.

Probably the best chem lecturer for 1st year Chemistry. Explains clearly, clarifies when people ask questions. His notes are very good and cover the whole course. BE WARNED however that his quizzes (7.5%) were very tough. I got an A overall but got 5/10 on 2/4 quizzes. However, I would say that the 2 marks lost on the quizzes is a fair trade.
Great prof! I thoroughly enjoyed going to his classes. His lectures are engaging and fun and his notes are easy to understand. Some new concepts may be hard to grasp at first but reading textbooks carefully and doing practice problems help alot. I strongly recommend him for first year chem students.
Wut should I say? Oh Yeah! He is nice and clear...but gives hard quizzes though...notes are organized too. ^^
I donno if it's the course itself or the prof but I find this course pretty hard. His powerpoint notes is not that helpful and quizzes are quite challenging.
pretty entertaining teacher but at times it seemed like he didn't understand the material
Gates Rock,he's the best chem prof in first year!He is funny and entertaining and you actually learn stuff.Quizzes are fair.he likes to interact with students.Volunteering in his lab is a good idea. But he tends to lose temper during exam time so watch out!
OH MY GOD..THIS DUDE IS THE ROCKET. TAKE HIM OR FAIL your choice. He is one unparalleled chem instructor though his quizzes are hard, but THEY ARE PINPOINT TO THE CONCEPTS. so first year dudes and girls...you either gonna fail or HAVE HIM...i got 97 in chem 121 from HIM.
Very Helpful and Interesting Prof ^^
He is amazing. He is both clear and concise in his teaching, interesting and enthusiastic to be around, and has a superior knowledge of course material. Take him and you won't be disappointed.
Hilarious. He's very excited about Chemistry.
he's VERY enthusiastic about Chemistry, notes are clear and to the point, and he makes the course fun. Only thing to watch out is the hard quizzes. but i think he's probably the best first year chem prof you can get.
His lectures are interesting and he make an effort to make chemistry fun.
Loved him. Course wasn't that hard, but he made it super easy.
he is really good, but dr. krems is also good. i once missed a lecture, and just decided to stay for the next class which was krems, he is so nice!
Dr. Gates was very passionate about Chemistry and he was always enthusiastic in the lectures. He is extremely well-organized and his notes and presentations are brilliant. The class is not too hard, but every now and then he throws a hard one at you. Go to class, listen to him and do the problem sets and you're set.
Great prof. Great great great
i did not like him at all. it took him half an hour to answer one question that a TA could answer in 10 minutes.
He is hands down, the guru of structural chemistry. He is a very smart and good lecturer and sincerely cares about the students in his section. He is also very helpful and willing to go the extra mile to make sure you understand the subject. He is also quite comical in his lecturing style and has a phosphorus fetish.
Dr. Gates knows his stuff, but often lacks the ability to get that knowledge across with precision and clarity. Also, he is not very considerate as he would sometimes put down students for asking certain questions-I lost respect for him after that.
He was good at explaining concepts and teaching but he was not very kind when it came to answering questions. He would often imply that the questions being asked of him were stupid. However, I went to a lot of his office hours and he was always very helpful.
GREAT professor. Cares about students, care about Chemistry. Notes, iClicker questions are brilliant, and you can tell that he KNOWS HIS STUFF. Great speaker and lecturer... BUT... don't answer questions during the lecture. He has the tendency to put down students and respond as if the question they asked is stupid,
Dr. Gates's class has interesting demonstrations and is generally entertaining, however it is difficult to follow the concepts a lot of the time, you have to pre-read the entire chapter before it is started in class, otherwise you fall incredibly behind and find yourself cramming before exams.
loves saying "Quiet Now", and talks too loud in his microphone at times, somethings wrong with it because it echos, and focusing on what he's saying takes away from your understanding of the course.
lectures are too casual. Comments on too many irrelevant things(his phosphorus obsession). Talks very slowly which results in not much material being covered and often left out. Didn't really bother explaining some concepts(point groups). Takes forever to explain something during office hours because only gives hints. Uses iclickers.
Really, really hard exams. Spends too much time going over basics, giving little to no time to go over the hardest material at the end of the course (crystal field theory). Be ready to teach yourself almost all of the material. Gives no answer keys to any of the exams, practice or otherwise, probably so you don't ask for them to be regraded.
He always goes on a tangent during lectures and talks about irrelevant things. Lectures are extremely boring and he's really condescending (apparently he's really nice during office hrs).Tests are fair but definitely study. Would not take again... Wasn't enjoyable at all.
He is a knowledgeable professor and willing to help I feel that he did not utilize time during the lecture efficiently. We spent way too much time on easy topics and irrelevant trivia which forced him to cover all of the hardest material (chapters 3-8 of the ChiRP) in less than a month. Those continuing in chemistry will certainly be worse off.
Literally the worst prof I think I've ever had. Is super unclear about almost everything, and not good with planning his time - we ran out of time for most of the course content. Midterms and finals will absolutely wreck you. Not helpful at all. Has some weird phosphorus fetish that will make you despise the entire periodic table. Also crusty af
Failed 59 students (out of 200). The course was actually pretty easy; he was just bad at teaching it. Basically spent most lectures talking about irrelevant things (or talking about what hes going to talk about -.-). Do your self a favour and read the book at home. Should you choose to attend his lecture, I really hope you like phosphorous!
Gives engaging lectures, clearly very passionate about chemistry. Seems like a nice guy, definitely takes his job seriously. I think he truly cares how well his students do. That said, it's tough material (esp. if you have no background in chemistry) and he kinda teaches like he expects us to know it already. Also goes on unrelated tangents often.
Seems nice enough and is FAIR, but he goes on tangents a LOT -- as a result we don't have enough time to finish a topic. Some topics are easy, some are very difficult. I had a ton of extra help, but even so I still failed the class. Exams are TOUGH. Passed the 2nd MT, failed the final. Go to his office hours: he does want his students to succeed.
He's passionate about Chemistry, that's the only positive thing I can say about him. Uninteresting lectures, insanely difficult exams compared to the material, expects you to know much more than what he taught in class. I had to drop out of the class because it was bringing my GPA down so much.
Probably the worst prof I've had. Not clear at all, wastes too much time talking about things that aren't relevant, expects you to know the "basics" when its a course for people who have never taken Chemistry before. Doesn't care for students. To the future students taking CHEM 111 next year and he is teaching... good luck.
Unbelievably awful professor. Covers only the basics in lectures but tests on the hardest material in the textbooks. First midterm average was 41% and he did not scale. Failed a third of his class last year. The fact that he is still allowed to teach this course honestly blows my mind. UBC, give your head a shake
Doctor Gates seems to have good intentions but doesn't understand the level of the 111 class who are beginners. He assumes everyone is at his level and thus makes the evaluations and the content covered way too extensive and hard for the students.
very rude and going to class is a waste of time. Worst prof.
Very intelligent and nice guy who is passionate about chemistry, but his lecture skills are sub-par, and the tests covered material that was much more difficult than the in-class topics and assigned homework.
Plan to spend 4 hours a week doing online hwk and quizzes, worth 7.5 % of the final grade. The Petrucci textbook was difficult to understand, and had errors in it. While the ChIRP focused on "read for interest"material. This course will be hard to pass for those who without a genuine interest in Chemistry. NOT A RESPECTABLE NOR HELPFUL PROF.
You know it's bad when over 50% of class consistently gets 0% on the quizzes. Tried to convince us to drop out of the course and take Chemistry 12 outside of UBC. I get a feeling that he hates teaching this course. Tests are extremely difficult, it'll be a miracle if I pass. Lectures are mostly a waste of time, if there were no iclickers...
I had strep throat and I missed a couple lectures, when I asked him about a specific question regarding the a concept in the CHIRP he refused to answer and told me that he already went over this. Super inconsiderate, what a guy...
Get credit for Chem 12 outside of UBC (I recommend looking at VLN (Vancouver Learning Network) which offers Chem 12 online for graduated students for free.) Gates wasn't helpful at all in lectures and made me despise Chemistry by the end of the semester. He covered an entire chapter of tough material, in two lectures, the week before finals.
Please for the love of GOD do not take chem 111 with Derek Gates at UBC. I passed with a 51 percent (class average was 60). However that being said I spent average of 6-8 hours on each quiz he assigned and this class almost ruined my relationship because I was " always doing chem." Gates is unhelpful and talks down to the class. good luck!
I feel like he just was not teaching at all. He spent all the time telling you what you should learn on yourself. And loves to torture his students with the hardest exams.
This course and professor made me wish that I did Chem 12 in high school. Personally I found all of the Grade 12 material very difficult, and there were a lot of quizzes to do. If you are gonna take this course be prepared to work really hard.
Dr. Gates made it clear from the start that it's our own fault we were stuck in this class and he was above teaching it. He was incredibly passive and snarky although it almost became funny by the end of the term. Tests were hard and you NEED to study to do well. He isn't great at teaching so use Khan to save yourself. Our class average was 60%.
Dr. Gates has made many of my friends suffer to the point of emotional breakdowns while in his office hours. Seemingly this is normal for him as he commented "I ran out of tissues this morning". Makes you feel stupid for asking questions and much of the content will have to be self taught. I failed on my first attempt.
Extremely willing to help you succeed, but the course is still really hard and he could probably do better to set his students up for success rather than letting F's be his norm. Lectures aren't too clear more often than not and you're better off self-learning from the CHIRP.
I know you love phosphorus, but we are not here for your love toward phosphorus. I took ap chemistry before coming here but it still seems difficult to me for the last 2 chapters in chirp. He is just an awful prof and do not teach useful stuffs. Highly recommend watching ap chem series in khan before taking this class.
Dr. Gates didn't teach CHEM111 this year (UBC finally caught on I'm assuming). I failed my first attempt with him, but this year taking the same course with a different prof I got a high A... that says something about his teaching, but when you're applying for graduate schools this man single handedly may have ruined your options...
He's actually a really good teacher. He tries to make things interesting and explains things very well and in detail through examples. Don't judge him by his other bad reviews he's very nice!
Quizzes are meant to help, not purposely trick you. At least not when it's for marks. Also makes you purchase his own textbook.
Took CHEM120, online version of 121. Dr Gates is one of the more entertaining teachers I've ever had, and lectures were always lively & fun with lots of interaction with students in the chat. CHEM this year was standardized across all sections so material was difficult, but Gates was always ready to answer questions. Talks about phosphorus a lot.
Dr. Gates was my least favourite professor in my entire first year. He is dismissive of student's questions, reads from the textbook with little deviation, and is generally too fast even when student's would ask him to slow down. The class content was difficult already, but his lecture style made the class infinitely harder than it needed to be.
His lectures are lengthy and boring and he never does examples, so it really doesn't help you at all. Too obsessed with phosphorus. Had to teach myself most of the course using the Chirp.
Dr. Gates is so sweet and outgoing! I don't understand why people have negative opinions about him b/c I found that he really put in the effort to make lectures enjoyable. He also made appropriate changes when given feedback, which goes to show how much he cares about the students' perspectives. He is very funny and tells cool stories in class!
Dr Gates is such a good chem prof, he really seems to care and put effort into making sure we all understand and he takes feedback seriously. Don't let the neg comments stop you from taking his class because he's actually very genuine and funny in class
Dr Gates is a nice man and a passionate teacher. My only real quibble is that we received no guidance on either the midterm or the final. zero practice questions, and we didn't even get our assignments back to study from. Be prepared to study without any guidance at all. Also include material not covered in his notes on tests.
The material in this class is whack. Instead of teaching useful polymer chemistry techniques, he teaches learn the history of polymers and random industrial methods. The tests are also just as bad; a quarter of the questions on the test are random trivia facts and another quarter are things we didn't cover in class.
Dr. Gates is one of the best professors that I have had. He is very passionate about what he teaches and it shows, and he is also kinda funny. Lots of talk about phosphorus.
He's a caring professor, he tries to help you understand his explanation if you ask him a question outside of class but beware, he does take quite a bit of time to answer and tends to ramble. Overall, I'd recommend learning the course material briefly before the class and take advantage of his office hours, it better prepares you for exams!
Raises his voice a lot in the classroom setting. Gets frustrated when students ask questions in the lecture. I would not recommend taking this course under this prof. On the whole, this has been the worst experience I have had with a professor so far in my degree.
Dr. Gates was my least favourite prof in my first year. All he talks about is phosphorous and goes off on a tangent almost every lecture. It was hard paying attention during his lectures but you had to go since the lectures weren't recorded and there were clicker questions. His quizzes were fair but some questions we didn't learn how to do them.
He was a nice guy, but he spent a lot of time talking about the history of things rather than focusing on the actual content we needed to know. His lectures were very boring and he would often go on a tangent about phosphorus. I ended up attending other professors' lectures instead of his and found them to be more helpful and better to understand.
Many questions in the quizzes were not covered inclass, including some content which were clearly indicated in the textbook (written by professors of the course) that will not show up in exams. Little time to do every quiz, most quizzes are hard (avg was ~65%). While many other professors gave easy online quizzes (easy100%) that opened for a week.
he talks too much and it's not even about what we're learning
Dr. Gates is da goat
He yells a lot and gets frustrated, such a boring lecturer, with 0 engagement, I wanted to fall asleep almost every lecture! He goes on random tangents and rants.
Funny man. I understand nothing in this class, I have to teach myself. Cute professor though, gets very excited about what he's teaching but cannot teach.
Do your best to register for other sections
Dr Gates is not great: -doesn't have office hours -doesn't give practice midterms -his notes are unclear -and doesn't answer questions properly and called us stupid once in lecture
Tough grader
If man is not talking about chemistry he loses his cheery and colourful personality. Bro gives the most mind numbing lectures then proceeds to give test questions that are incomprehensibly difficult.
Drop him
I should have took everyone else's reviews more seriously. I never understood anything during the lecture and essentially learned the entire course from researching and studying with my friends. I could tell he was a nice guy and his intention was to get us inspired by chemistry, but the execution was just NOT there.
Explains concepts in the hardest way possible. He uses math and formulas foremost instead of breaking down material into logical steps. His quizzes are nonsensical and unlike the textbook or exams. He makes you feel bad about questions and gaslights the class by saying everything is easy, even though his averages are lower than the other classes.
We didn't have graded homework, we just did the questions on the chirp which weren't even close to exam style questions. went on and on about phosphorus 2 classes before the final when we hadn't even finished the course. is boring and doesn't teach well at all, yeah we get it you're on tenure but come on dude!
He's very boring. I honestly suggest you go to a different class for lectures and just show up for the quizzes. His quizzes are difficult but they're barely worth anything so don't stress. If you want to learn, don't go to his class, attendance doesn't matter so yeah.
Quizzes were really hard and is not the most engaging instructor.
No, just no. Try getting a different prof.
Honestly he's a super condescending professor. I asked him a question during lecture and he made me feel awful about it - essentially just made me feel stupid for asking the question. I essentially stopped going to lectures and just taught myself the content through the chirp.
Gates was an interesting professor. He's extremely passionate about chemistry (in particular Phosphorous) and can talk forever about it. But he easily goes on tangents, and does sometimes teach things in a convoluted way. Definitely rely on ChIRP - it has everything. He is really scarier on tests, but if you get to know him he's easy to talk to.
The quizes are difficult.
Quizzes are hard and not very engaging or approachable.
Very hard lecture and he has his own understanding of chem but he does not know everybody is not that clever as him
Lectures don't add significantly to your learning. I stopped attending the last few lectures. Used the CHIRP and taught myself everything in the book! Despite asking the class for questions, no one would answer because of the atmosphere. Attend for the quizzes which make up a portion of the grade, otherwise, the CHIRP is your best friend.
Every lecture there was a minimum of 4 students that were asleep in his class. He is a very nice professor, however he doesn't really make his lectures engaging as he talks a lot. Use the chirp instead of his lectures to learn, it'll help you in the long run. Oh and his quizzes are very difficult compared to the other sections.
He's deeply passionate about chemistry and cares about students -- all undone by his deeply boring lectures. Intense with tests (he gave someone a 0 for handing their test back a few seconds late). Quizzes are HARD (moreso than midterms!). I'm pretty sure grades are curved considering the challenging final. Still, go for Stirchak's section instead.
Big middle finger to whoever designed this course, worst experience ever. I went to therapy cuz of this course! Gates is not doing great but not doing bad either. It's more like this course itself is lame. But since this course is designed to screen out normies, go to Stirchak's section which is more helpful.
he talked about phosphorus so much he had a peee kingk #childmaltreatment #uppergyatt
Snoozefest. Fell asleep every single lecture for the first few weeks so just stopped showing up and used the textbook and watched Stirchak's posted videos. Quizzes were incredibly difficult with little time. Take a mwf section and Stirchak cause Tues/Thurs is brutal. Probably could've cared more and gotten a higher grade with another prof.
Incredibly boring and out of touch. Unfittingly difficult quizzes. Little care for students in their questions and input, frequently outright ignoring questions even when there was time to address them. Unhelpful/judgmental during office hours.
Did not explain anything
Terrible at explaining, not a good atmosphere. Makes you worse off for the midterms and finals. If you're stuck in his class, watch Stirchak videos or try to change your section. His tests are inaccurate compared to the midterm and final. My prayers are with you guys.
Found him to be very judgmental towards those who did not understand concepts on the first go. I attended all the lectures before the first midterm however when I was talking to classmates with other proffs, I learned that Derek was not teaching us all the concepts needed. After this, I started attending stirchak instead, I learnt a lot more.
Lectures can be a snoozefest, but the textbook and CHIRP videos are your best friends. Quizzes are killer, so use Unstuck ai for extra prep. Stick with it - you'll learn a ton!
He is a great professor, very passionate in chemistry and lectures were inspirational.
Lectures are very boring. Chill guy tho.
If you take his class, be prepared to self study like a lot. And the only thing that will help you is watching other profs recorded lectures or chirp. He doesn't like teaching which is evident through him just reading off of slides. He skips from 1st page to like 10th in one minute. At one point, I stopped going to his lectures. worst prof.
Horrible at teaching and lectures and has a passive aggressive tone. Lecture's are so bad you are better off reading the chirp and watching stirchak's recordings. I feel worse and more confused sitting in his lectures than not attending.
He clearly knows a lot about chemistry so that's great, however knows nothing about teaching. Rambles alot. Advertises himself as approachable outside class, went to office hours once and he just kept rambling about stuff not related to the course. Better off just reading the chirp and going to another chem section to learn instead.
the prof even teased me for giving out an example which was really rude and uncalled for
Clearly very passionate and trying to engage with students but his teaching style wasn't very effective imo. Be sure to do the pre-reading like he recommends, it saved me several times.I do recommend going to his office hours but you may be in there awhile. Once he gets started he rambles a lot so have some specific questions ready.
doesn't care about students, would start doing questions with no explanation and ignored student questions. I stopped going because his lectures were useless and dr. stirchaks lecture recordings were much better.
He went through his slides very quickly, without explaining the concepts clearly. Stopped going to his lectures after the first midterm. Stirchak's lecture recordings and office hours were much more helpful.
Awful, nothing else to be said.
Horrible at teaching and explaining, you're better off just learning on your own from the CHIRP. Lectures are basically chirp content but explained in a more confusing and worse way. Watch stirchak's recordings if you can't make it to her lectures, it's much better and more helpful.
Horrendus office hours, he takes 45mins to 1hr to explain one question. His explanation? Horrendus, just more confused. Very arrogant and mean, made me cry. Talks alot in lectures, once talked about his fav element for 20 mins Goes very fast over very important chapters Expect to learn on your own He's overall just big yikes, AVOID AT ALL COST!
I found his lectures useless because he often went off-topic, and made subjects much more difficult than they had to be. I stopped going to his lecture after failing the first midterm and my grades skyrocketed (just by teaching myself and watching the online recordings of the other prof).
Peter Griffin over here cares more about glazing his own works than actually teaching a class. Will spend 25 out of 50 minutes rambling about the nobel peace prize and how he met one of the winners. Tells you to pre read because he cant never cover the topics hes supposed to in class. Doesn't use a mic so gl if you're in the back of the class
Very hard to approach. Either have tough skin, or don't take his class. Although I'm sure nothing personal is going on, the way he answers questions feels derogatory to the student. Comments made to the class may also feel quite discouraging to anyone who is already struggling.
Dr. Gates is very interesting, enjoyed his lectures and jokes. Had a pretty insightful discussion regarding energy storage and costs of green energy.
Very funny, would take again, criminally underrated professor
His only flaw I think is that he knows chemistry so well that he doesn't seem to realise that what we are learning throughout this course isn't going to come like common sense. I didn't find him as bad as his rating on here. Not a bad prof at all just sometimes not so clear. My recommendation is "worship your ChIRP", only thing that will help you.
I enjoyed Dr Gates' lectures. At the beginning of the term, I was a little scared based on the reviews on here. However, I found his lectures enjoyable, and I learned a lot. I did find he would get a little sidetracked on his lectures, talking about something unrelated, but I thought it was interesting, so I didn't mind.
Worst Chem121 prof at UBC. Doesn't explain anything in lecture, yaps about things irrelevant to the course instead. Very rude and doesn't answer questions in class, even in office hours he's so rude, and makes you feel stupid. Stopped wasting my time at his lectures after first midterm didn't go too well, taught myself and my grades skyrocketed.
Dr. Gates is passionate about chemistry but not the best at teaching it. He has good intentions but not a great instructor. He often gets side tracked in lectures. When you ask questions, he either answers them straight to the point or rambles forever about irrelevant things. The ChIRP was super helpful! Helped me succeed.
He teaches very fast. Also, we started having in-class tests this year, and his were harder than some of the other profs when I compared tests with my friends from different sections.
I think Dr. Gates gets a little overhates. Yes he does get a little side tracked once and a while but I found that barely noticeable and it honestly made the drag of CHEM 121 a little more interesting. He's extremely passionate about chemistry but if you want to succeed in his class just grind the CHRIP nothing else to it.
1. rarely takes questions doing lectures; you will have to ask him after class individually (but he appreciates questions and is nice in explaining them to you in-person). 2. very limited office hours. 3. fast-paced lectures. But I would say these are pretty manageable, and if you are putting in the effort/doing pre-readings, you should be fine.
I enjoyed Dr Gates' lectures. At the start of the term, I was nervous based on the reviews. However I found his lectures enjoyable, and I learned a lot. He would get a little sidetracked on his lectures, talking about something unrelated, but I thought it was interesting, so I didn't mind. You can tell Dr Gates loves chemistry, and it was inspiring
His teaching was not it, I would not recommend. Not very approachable at all.
Doesn't take questions during class and gets sidetracked often. Lectures as if he thinks we all have years of experience in chemistry already and aren't just learning it for the first time. Make sure to stay caught up in the chirp and do every practice question if you want to do well!
So baically if you want to understand what he is talking during class. You will need to preview every chapter in the textbook. If you do that, great! You can probably understand everything without him, otherwise, you will just sit there and don't know what is going on. He just gave a bad lecture, every few point is useful. Tip: Do self learning
Don't expect you can understand his lecture. He just gave a bad lecture which you can only understand if you preview the chapter. But if you read through the textbook you may understand everything thing by yourself. So good luck if you have his class, it just challenges your self learning skill
Run……………..
Dr Gates answers questions poorly, and I was often more confused afterwards. He grew on me slightly as the semester went on, and I did attend his office hours once and got help, which I appreciated. That being said, I would have preferred a different prof for this challenging course.
In my opinion, he is not as bad as most of the reviews say. He is not great, often getting sidetracked and a bit confusing, but he is not a bad prof. His in class tests are difficult compared to other sections and he is not great at answering questions, but his advice about where you should be working in the textbook and studying is often right
GET OUT OF THIS COURSE ASAP. He has a sense of humour, but other than that he has no redeeming qualities. He focuses on things that do not matter, you're better off just learning from the CHIRP. If possible, SWITCH INTO STIRJACK'S SECTION, or honestly anyone other than him. I wouldn't retake this course for $10 million.
During the first week, I went to him to ask about what I could do if I was going to miss a week of class and a midterm (for a legit reason, I got concession for other classes), and he told me to "get your priorities straight" and that "you should drop the class or you will likely fail". He would also ridicule students for answering wrong in class.
Dr Gates clearly cares about chemistry, but he doesn't teach the course well at all. He takes a few pages out of the ChIRP every lecture and goes over it quickly. Lectures are as boring as it gets bar a couple cool demos from the TA. Way better off reading the ChIRP word for word on your own time to learn the material.
