You can see how much he loves his job from his chemistry related jokes :) ge explains everything very well, helps a lot when you ask questions, if you study from his notes you can get a fair mark. It is organic chemistry so you actually have to study regularly, but awesome professor!!

His enthusiasm rubs off on you somehow. Love his teaching style and his clarity. You have to pay attention to all he says in class, practice text book questions and keep up with readings. Overall he made me like and enjoy orgo.

Wonderful professor. Occasionally funny, sometimes can be a bit of an ass with his jokes though. Explains concepts brilliantly and simpler than most other chemistry profs would. Defo worth taking classes with him.

Was a little scared to take orgo from horror stories... with that said, Dr. Jackson is amazing and is able to take difficult concepts and explain them easily for everyone to understand. I dislike chemistry as I find it dull and boring, yet organic chemostry with Dr. Jackson was interesting and surprisingly fun. He has a very good command over core concepts and is able to communicate them clearly and effectively. Derek Jackson is the man, period.

Now don't get me wrong, Organic Chemistry is not easy by any means, you will have to put the work in, but Derek Jackson is extremely fair, and does make the course on the easier side of the spectrum. He does a very good job of explaining all the concepts, and reactions. Make sure you go to class, because he doesn't post his in-class notes.

Dr. Jackson does his best to make sure that students understand the material and succeed in the course. The course is by no means easy but you can do well if you study.

Dr. Jackson makes sure that you understand what he's teaching and makes chemistry a lot easier to digest. If you keep up with the lectures and listen in class, you should do well. He is really enthusiastic and helpful, and wants his students to succeed. I would take another class with him anytime, he's just wonderful overall.

Overall amazing! Does a great job of explaining material and his jokes keep you interested. He posts many documents to clarify the hard stuff which helped. Tests were fair and he does a good job of telling you what to expect. He takes the time to assign certain textbooks problems that will help you understand the lesson. So far my favourite prof :)

I can't imagine taking Organic Chemistry with a better prof. Super clear lectures that hammers down the details you need to know, and omits any of the unnecessary information the textbook rambles about. Responds to student inquiries within a day or so, and provides as much resources as possible to help you succeed. Out of 10, I rate him an 11.

Very good lecturer. Explains almost all material crystal-clear. Tries to even make a final exam a little easier as it is extremely difficult. However, ORGCHEM is very hard.

Professor Jackson was honestly my favourite professor ever at York. I hated org but soon learned to love it as they way he teaches is crystal clear. If you don't understand something or have a hard time with getting good grades, he never looks down on you and will push you to be better. He truly inspired me in ways professors never have.

The tests were based on the material, but the multiple choice questions were a bit tricky. He is a very good professor and explains things very clearly.

The course is not hard by any means but you must work hard like any course. Midterms are fair, final exam is slightly more difficult, but still do able. Get past tests. I got an A.

The only prof that manages to actually teach this course, and does it well, too. Attendance is a must if you want to pass. Textbook is only good for practice problems, you don't need it if you have him. Honestly the only prof worth taking Orgo with, all of the others have no intention to help you succeed.

A super-enthusiastic guy who knows organic chemistry like the back of his hands. He is very hands-on about the subject, teaching it using incredibly beneficial visual aids and combines learned concepts with examples and practice problems from the book. Dr. Jackson is a solid professor, probably one of the best you will encounter. His lectures are organized and clear. Dr. Jackson is a top tier professor. His lectures are organized, and he is very articulate when he describes the material. As a Bonus, he drops the occasional joke in his lectures, which lightens the mood. The midterms were fair and the majority of the class did well, however the final was brutal, very few people seemed to do well.

Prof. Jackson is by far the best prof I had at YorkU. His lectures are crystal clear and his form of delivering information is exceptional. Tests/exam are more than fair and in terms of difficulty-reasonable. In my opinion, if adequate work is put in an A/A+ is very achievable

I have taken CHEM 2020 with another prof, and Jackson was so much better. He is clear and fair and doesn't throw curve balls on tests/exams, for the most part. I failed CHEM 2020 with the other prof and ended up with an A with Jackson. Even comparing class averages, Jackson's was always higher (5-10%). No brainer. Choose Jackson.

Amazing prof. I honestly hated first year chem, but Jackson makes Orgo so easy and is amazing at teaching. He makes me want to take more chemistry classes in the future. His help sheets are better than any textbook out there. His jokes are really funny and he knows his stuff very well. he will never give you an ambiguous answer. He's adorable!

Derek Jackson is absolutely amazing! I have chem 2021 with him now and just by taking notes in his class I understand 85% of the material well. He definitely knows how to teach and is very enthusiastic about the subject. He truly cares about how the students progress which is why he does not try to overly trick you on anything. Great professor !

He is a great professor, but for this semester, he had really tough tests. The first midterm the average was incredibly low. and the exam was incredibly hard. Students were crying when they finished the exam. However, Jackson does teach the material very well. I assume that the difficulty of test depends on how he's feeling. Still sad from the exam

He's the most inspirational chem prof I've ever had! You can tell he takes his job very seriously, as seen with all the last minute office hours, multiple emails with additional tips before the exam, etc. The exam was hard this year, probably because like 15% of the class got perfect on the second midterm. An A is definitely attainable with effort!

Best chemistry prof. out there. The material is pretty tough but i understood 80% of it by simply attending lectures. Practice is definitely required, his tests have clear grading criteria but do expect thinking outside the box type questions here and there. If you must take Organic chemistry take it with this guy :)

The best professor I have had at York. He understands the material, has a true passion for chemistry, and motivates his students to have a similar passion. Listen to every word he says as he very consciously directs the concepts you are learning to the fundamental principles of chemistry(and biology). Also, do all the assigned textbook problems.

On the school course review, I gave him the highest marks I could give him and wrote the best comments I could think of. Future students should have a chance take his course.

What a professor. I took 2 orgo classes at another university before York, failed one and barely passed the other. I was dreading CHEM 2020/21, and now I actually enjoy learning mechanisms and electron flow. Best. Prof. EVER. Jackson puts so much time, work, and energy into helping his students (making himself available for office hours, online tutorials, etc.). He really cares, and he also has a great handle on the subject (Organic Chemistry) and enjoys challenging his students which kept me captivated all year long.

Module I of Dr. Jackson was lame, it was easier than CHEM 1000 midterm 1. I recommend him changing the course concepts for Module I, making it more organic reactions, applications & thinking problems! The class average for this module was 81%, not recommended at York University. Recommended having a CHEM 2021 review test (5%) during 2nd week.

The best lecturer, if you come to lectures you understand 85% of the material and homework and assignments become easy. Very helpful and tries to do his best for the students to make studying easier.

Overall Great Prof, Had him last year for CHEM1001 - the first time he taught it. He really loves chemistry and knows what he is talking about. To do good - Go to lecture, Do the Practice Question he assigns and if required go to PASS session ... Tests are harder than you expect but if you do the practice questions you should be able to get B+

Dr. Jackson does a great job conveying information, hes specific about what we don't need to know for the tests. Very approachable if you have any questions. He goes above & beyond to help his students with the material. His online tutorials are very helpful. If you listen to his lectures & use his resources and do the homework, you should do well.

Dr. Jackson is perhaps the best prof I've had so far. He explains the material crystal clearly, his moodle site is extremely organized and detailed and filled with plenty of resources for students, his assessments are very fair and he also has an amazing sense of humour. He is very, very dedicated and caring. Cannot recommend him enough.

Love this guy. Lectures are really good; it can be a bit slow due to the fact that he wants to make sure that you really understand your content, but that's all in good intentions. Tests are extremely fair, very similar to previous tests he provided and no real surprises as long as you studied properly and listened to his lectures.

Prof Derek is amazing. He is very caring, really helps the students to get a good grade; he even takes online tutorials and solves every textbook and previous midterm questions for students and makes them accessible online. He is very approachable. I would definitely take his courses again.

Make sure you go to class or have someone who can give you the notes! His lectures are the key thing to help you do good on tests. Oh and don't slack on doing the textbook problems. Labs are hard and take a while so be prepared for those.

Dr. Jackson is the most amazing prof you could have for organic chem. His teaching style is very clear. The midterms and the final are fair and you can do well in the course as long as you do all the HW questions and watch his online tutorials. He doesn't have a great personality so I wouldn't recommend going to his office hours

Amazing prof, obviously if you don't enjoy chemistry you'll find this course to be more work. Pretty much a review of grade 12; you can get an easy A just do all the homework and midterm packages, and you're good to go

I had a hard time w chem in HS, but this was my favourite class this year. His enthusiasm rubs off on you & he's VERY patient, will explain over & over if you ask. Always willing to help, but can be a little blunt/awkward at times. Chooses his words carefully when lecturing & simplifies the info well. He knows what he's doing & knows how to (1)

(2) deliver info in an organized & structured manner. Dr Jackson knows what will possibly confuse students when talking about certain topics, so he always sets the record straight. His tests are very doable, as long as you study, do the homework & ask for help when you need it. My lecture grade was higher than my lab grade. Highly recommend him.

I wasnt the best in chemistry in HS and was not looking forward to it in uni but Derek made me love it . Even after the first day... I knew Derek was going to be an AMAZING prof. He is so clear in his lectures and is very patient and approachable. He also cracks jokes from time to time. TIP for A: go to class, ask questions and do homework.

Best prof ever, he has a great sense of humor. His workload is reasonable, only 8 assignments with 10 questions. He also gives textbook questions which are pretty straightforward. His practice midterms(use them)are easy and he has online tutorials before midterms to help students. He truly cares for his students. All his assessments are reasonable.

This guy is an AMAZING lecturer, sometimes its as if he has a script memorized in his head but in the best way possible. He makes chemistry so easy to understand and his slides are perfect so you dont need the textbook except for homework questions. Above all, he is such a caring prof and he is funny as well which makes lectures enjoyable.

If you have the chance to take a class with him, DO IT. He makes the hardest topics easy through the way he teaches, and his midterms are incredibly fair. If you attend class and do all the textbook homework, an A+ is very easy to get. He gives you every opportunity to succeed and gives you every resource possibly needed to do well.

Great slides, explains clearly, records every lecture. I loved going to his classes. He also did online tutorials on Zoom so we wouldn't have to come to class at 8:30.

Hes a great professor and he does everything in his power to help students. Get the textbook just to do the questions he suggests. He has tutorials that go in depth with each question or concern. Hes very accessible during office hours. Lecture wise everything is very clear and he makes it very welcoming to ask questions.

Not my prof, but was the course director and was really helpful, and on top of his game. All the info was readily available to us through him, he kept his grading within the deadlines for dropping etc... Seriously awesome!

He's also really nice and very easy to reach outside of class time, he holds office hours 3 times a week! The labs and assignments are also very straight-forward. Overall great experience :))

Despite being online, he taught all concepts clearly. In lectures, he lets yk what topics to skip. The tests are straightforward and all info comes directly from what he covers. Tb is not necessary but good for extra reading. 3 tests (45%), 4 labs (20%), 10 easy eClass assign/quiz (11%), exam (24%). Can opt out of exam (tests 69%). TAKE CHEM W HIM!

Literally a legend. If you can take him do yourself a favor and do so. Super accessible always willing to help and very easy to get an A+ if you put in work and study. Textbook is available but I barely used it and got an A+ because of how amazing the lectures and Dr. Jackson is. You do not want to miss out on this guy. Possibly the best prof ever.

Best Chemistry teacher in the world

Derek is simply amazing. I took chem 1000/1001/2020 with him and was able to understand everything just through his lectures. He is a well balanced prof with noticeable passion in teaching and in chemistry.

VERY good at teaching. Incredibly unaccommodating though. Expect to be treated terribly if you have any issues/ lost marks unfairly. (this may simply be admins at orgchem though)

Professor Jackson is probably the best professor if not best teacher Ive had in my life. It is very obvious that he cares for his students and truly wants them to do well. He even does a zoom meeting on his own time on the Saturday before our Sunday midterms for people to ask extra questions. Hoping I can take all my chem courses with him.

I dearly wish Dr. Jackson was my professor for all my courses. I would be so much happier. Unfortunately, I have only been lucky enough to have him for a few of my classes, but I am always struck by how perfect and professional his teaching style is. He is clear, well paced, and to the point. Basically, with him, everything seems simple.

By far the best professor for orgo chem! Dr. Jackson is really passionate and enthusiastic when teaching and his lectures clearly reflect that. He made orgo fun and actually enjoyable. Tests were very fair and topics straight from the lecture slides. Final was more challenging though. Keep up with lectures/study hard and you will be perfectly fine.

This man is genuinely in love with chemistry, and it shows in his lectures. Conveys complex concepts in a surprisingly easy to follow manner, and has a very engaging teaching style.

The GOAT of the chemistry department. This guy should teach level 3000 and 4000 courses but unfortunately he does not. If you get him you are blessed at a a fairly difficult courses (Chem 2020 and 2021). PADPED (will understand later) :)

Dr. Jackson is by far the best prof I've had at York. I did not come with any chem background but he explains all the concepts very well. He also records his lectures + tutorials in a way that you get subtitles, time marks, and etc. Out of all my profs, he have the best recordings; you can actually understand them and see everything :)

Extremely amazing Professor, I honestly think he is super knowledgeable and an expert of Chem. His lectures were such an amazing experience for Organic, he doesn't stutter, talks at a perfect pace, crystal clear explanations, he is also very approachable about questions and the tests were really fair given you do the homework. Take this Prof!!!

he is an amazing professor and the best one I've had so far. if you manage to attend all of his lectures and pay attention to what he teaches, you can truly do really well. he makes all the materials seem easy ad his explanation are super easy to understand.

Great professor. He knows what he's talking about and is excellent at explaining concepts and the course material. Personally, midterms were much harder than the final exam. Final = 83%. M1 = 61%. M2 = 75%. He takes the assigned textbook questions for the exams and alters them slightly, so everything we are tested on, we have already done.

Amazing Professor. I would love to be in his class again. I went from a B in highschool to an A+ in his class. Concepts are easy to understand but practice practice practice!

Dr. Jackson is an amazing professor. He actually can teach (unlike other profs) and he makes it possible to do well in his class. As long as you attend lectures and do the homework you will succeed in his class. He also takes his time when explaining concepts. If you have to take chemistry make sure you get him as a prof; you won't regret it!

The best educator I have ever met in my 5 years at uni. Was initially very scared to do organic chem 1/2 like many are, but with this mans made complex topics sooo much easier (lectures are godly). Midterms are very fair - exactly what's taught in class with some application. Final is still harder but still very fair (more application/synthesis).

Dr Jackson is an amazing professor! He is very knowledgeable and was kind enough to answer all of my questions with patience. I truly thought that I was not smart enough to handle a challenging class like organic chemistry but his teaching has made me love learning about organic chemistry. I would recommend him to anyone that is taking CHEM 2021.

Professor Jackson is an excellent instructor who makes even the most complex chemistry concepts easy to grasp. His lectures are engaging, and he's always willing to clarify tricky topics. Using Unstuck study together with the free textbook helped me ace this class. Highly recommend!

He's an amazing professor. His lectures are perfect and provide a clear example of what's gonna be on the exams, he also loves to add humour to his lectures which make it a bit more engaging and worth going to!

I've never taken chemistry before but since I needed it I was scared to take it, but let me just say Dr. Jackson is the best prof you can get for this course. He explains the material so well and gives lots of practice questions, do the textbook problems and you'll do well trust me!

THE BEST PROF! I took this course with him because I couldn't get through chemistry and he was the only professor that I could understand chemistry with. He would make sure you understood the material by being open to questions and he was very responsive to emails. his tests were very easy. 10/10 recommend and would take again!!

BEST PROFESSOR EVER!!!! Take his class as he prepares you for the exam and midterms very well! He gives you exactly what to expect. You just need to do the homework and you will be fine. There is a lot of homework but its not bad and basically is your method of studying.

Guys, if you have the chance to take him, do it. He taught everything I learnt in highschool grade 12 chem but better and easier to understand. his midterms and exams are copy and paste from textbook questions, obvs he changes the numbers, so practice practice practice!! if you do you can easily get an A. Also, super nice chill guy so that's a plus

He is the sweetest guy, super funny. I enjoyed going to his lectures, very easy to follow along. He made a tough class very easy, I would recommend taking a class with him, he is an organic chem god!!

I knew next to nothing about chemistry before taking this course, but Professor Jackson's teaching style made every topic crystal clear.

Never spoke to this professor but as a student, you can tell he is very passionate about chemistry. He explains things in chem 1500 in a way that would really help prepare you for chem 1000. I am currently taking 1000, nd we use the same textbook so it saves u some money. He is very positive and makes you want to pay attention in class.

amazing prof. his midterms were EXACTLY the assigned questions. the final exam did have a few tricky questions but they were completely fair and made you really think ab the material. overall, if he is the prof or course director for any class TAKE HIS CLASS!!!
