Took in Fall 2010. His tests were straight forward and there were generally no surprises. The only thing that his notes were really unorganized, and even though he posted all his notes, they were out of order and hard to follow.
Love his lecture! The quiz is easy if you attend the class.
Great professor. He keeps you interested and uses tons of real world examples. He's also hilarious and very honest. Has knowledge in many different disciplines too which is really cool.
Great guy. Not enough time in one semester to cover the economic history from 1600 - 2000. Gives exam questions two or three days before test time. Questions are vague. Final term paper due at the end of the course on any topic within the scope of the course. Wish he was more direct in his teaching, but overall alright.
Johnson really teaches a good lecture. If you take good notes you'll be fine. Pay attention since he often tells you what questions are on the exam and stuff like that. He's very funny and entertaining. Honest with you about your grade. The hw and quizzes are a breeze but his exams are harder. Pay attention and it's a good class.
He is a good professor, but his lectures are all over the place, especially the notes he puts on the board. His explanations of concepts are also not very clear and can be confusing.
Microeconomics with Johnson is an incredibly easy course. As long as you show up to lecture and do the online homework (as well as understand the basic concepts), you can almost guarantee an A. Also, he says he requires the Wall Street Journal as a text - don't waste your money. Never read any articles he posted.
second class taken with prof johnson, retook micro first got a B originally got an F. Exams were take home essays
As long as you do the assigned readings, pay attention and go to each lecture you should be fine. He gives 2 exams, both of which are curved if the class does poorly. Reading each chapter will help you on the misc. topics on the exams
Johnson was an absolute pleasure to have as a professor. He not only explained the material very well but always put the well-being of his students first. I completely missed a midterm which is 30% of your grade due to me being an idiot and he allowed me to retake it by the end of the week. Always making jokes in class and overall a great choice
Very fun guy to take a class with. Made jokes and you could tell he wanted to make it interesting. Very accommodating and reasonable, not looking to give out bad grades.
Nice and really funny. I thought his exams were kind of hard. I failed the midterm but got a B in the class after I studied like crazy. Do well on all the quizzes and online assignments and you should be fine.
Took the class online and found it to be extremely confusing and a total headache. Maybe he is better in person because he was helpful through emails but the online class was a disaster in my opinion, even though I did every single reading assignment, homework and took my own notes it was a struggle.
Professor seemed to get off task a lot, was average at teaching. Exams were multiple choice and harder than expected but were curved a little. Class was extremely boring, but overall it wasn't too hard.
I definetly had no interest in taking this class and wish I had dropped it (I'm an allied health major). Johnson himself is an interesting professor and keeps you awake in lecture. However the material itself is what I really struggled with. Try to really solidify your knowledge on the material when you do it for homework. That and make flashcards.
Watch online lectures. Post powerpoints of textbook online
As an online course I would not take again but I would take any of his other in-class courses in a heart beat. The exams are brutal but the quizzes were never too difficult.
I took Micro online and got an A. Didn't find it very difficult because his quizzes and homework were so easy. There were two exams that were somewhat challenging, but if you watch most of the lectures you will be able to think through it.
Johnson is a great professor. His lectures were long (1hr 45 min) but he was really entertaining and did a good job keeping the class engaged. The material was often boring but he explained it very well and always cracked jokes. The online homework and WSJ summaries are easy but his exams can be difficult. Go to class, do HW Good Grade
Took this class as a HybridBlended class, and was very interesting. You get a discussion session once per week to go over the lecture material, but mostly, the learning is up to you. Nice because you can choose when to watch online lectures. Online homework and quizzes are easy. Textbook essential.
Great guy. Midterm is pretty tough but he is very helpful if you go to his office hours. Always wants to help his students out. I took the in-class version.
Derek Johnson is a very good guy. He really cares about his students and tries to make lectures fun. Macro is full of concepts and is a hard class in general, however the class is not that hard. He is always there to help if you are having trouble.
Do not take econ with him. Absolutely terrible. Online lectures are pointless. Final is nearly impossible. Look for a different professor... Johnson is terrible.
sweetest guy EVER. teaching style was not for me. i taught myself everything and felt that his lectures were useless along with his review sessions. he is great at office hours but his lectures really were not helpful. but overall if you read the textbook and teach yourself along before going to lecture you will be fine in the course.
I took the in-class version and I would say his lectures were not the best. However he is very passionate about economics and really wants you to understand the material. He goes over the micro ideas very quickly so I would take that class first. He curves the exams and final but they were not hard if you study. My Econlab can be confusing.
HE IS THE MAN!
Prof. Johnson is a great professor and knows exactly what he's doing. Be prepared for very fast teaching though - he not only speaks fast but he zips through material like no other. He offers extra review if needed. He keeps things very interesting though, so it's not a bad class. The textbook is very helpful, although its not necessary to read.
Great professor and super nice guy! He's extremely passionate, therefore wants you to do well. He works with you to get a good grade. He also curves and is just really nice about grades in general. His lectures are fast but not too difficult. His office hours and study sessions are very helpful. Also weekly online quizzes & hw
Easy class. lecture isnt mandatory if u take online notes. discussions help alot. if u dont understand the material well the tests r hard. dont need to buy the textbook because he supplies textbook powerpoints
Best professor I've had. Super accommodating no matter the circumstance and understands that students have lives and that life happens. Super nice guy and willing to go out of his way to help. reasonable assignments and quizzes/homeworks are easy
Took him last semester for ECON 1200... Hardest class I've ever taken and I studied and did all the homework. Confusing lectures. Tests are extremely hard. DJ has a fun personality, and is very energetic. The online homework takes hours every week. He does give credit where he sees people trying.
Johnson is a great guy. He has a heart of gold. But his teaching style was very boring. Exams aren't too bad, though. Just make sure to study the concepts. I found the discussions more helpful than lecture. Online homework and quizzes are pretty easy but annoying. Don't buy the book, he posts textbook chapters online. Overall, an OK teacher.
Johnson is alright. Don't like his teaching method. He just reads off slides. Lecture is pointless but discussion helps. Online homework and quizzes are super annoying but somewhat easy. Midterm wasn't too bad. However, the final was really tough. Trust me, DO NOT buy the book. Absolutely not needed. Just an okay class, I didn't really like it.
This guy is all over the place with his teaching. He seems very unprepared. Lecture was worthless if you ask me. I tried to teach myself everything and ended with a C still. Midterm wasn't bad, final was ridiculous. Definitely don't buy the book because he posts the chapters online. If you want to take an econ intro course, take it with Svalestad.
Definitely one of the best professors in the Economics department. I would take any class he teaches if you have the chance. His classes fill up quickly so consider yourself lucky if you get in. He is very helpful and will work with you. Go to his office hours and you won't be disappointed.
A great guy overall. He zips through material but his office hours are a lifesaver. I found discussions to be very helpful. Take your time to do online homework and quizzes because they count for 40% of your grade. Make sure you understand the concepts and you will get at least a B. I enjoyed having Johnson as a professor. No book needed.
He's the best professor I've had so far. Just go to lecture and take notes and go to discussion. He always was able to clear things up if I needed help in office hours. I would definitely recommend taking micro with him. If you study everything he goes over in lecture, you will do well.
Johnson is a great guy and professor, even though lecture tended to be boring. You do not need to go to every class. Very helpful during office hours, and I'm pretty sure that if you see your TA and him consistently, he adds points to your grade. Failed the midterm, got a B+ on the final and still aced the class.
Johnson is pretty funny and there to support his students. I personally didn't find the class very interesting and I struggled. He went through the material pretty quickly, a chapter a week, and never went back to review. I found the tests to be tricky. He does curve exam and class grades which is a plus.
I took Micro1201 with DJ last semester and decided to take Macro during the winter online. If you put in the effort, you will do great in this class. He is a wonderful teacher, clear expectations and goes above and beyond with responding promptly to emails/questions. Very friendly, and understanding if you need help/extensions.
Prof. Johnson is super nice and always responses to emails quickly. Homework would save your grade. Quizzes and tests are not that hard if you understand every single question on your homework. I would recommend to go to a regular class instead of an online one because the online class actually includes more materials than a full-semester class.
He's a pretty cool professor. You don't need to show up to lectures notes are online, but I thought it was helpful. His tests are tough, but if you go and talk to him or your TA during office hours so he knows you're trying, you'll probably get an A. I got a C on the midterm, A- on the final, but still got an A in the class. Quizzes in discussion.
Enjoyed his class. Very funny and Personable guy. Should do well if you do the work required to understand and learn the material. Highly recommend you take this professor.
He is really passionate about the material but I just will never understand economics. The exams were really hard too. Only 25 multiple choice so if you miss a few you're screwed.
Very laid back but usually does not stick to his course syllabus. Make sure you do the wall street journal readings as he loves to put those in the exams.
Professor Johnson gave great lectures and made the 1 hour and 45 minutes bearable. The material is pretty challenging and at the pace he is going, it can be difficult on the exams. The midterm was all multiple choice and pretty hard. Go to every lecture and do the online homework and you should be fine.
Classes with Johnson are rushed but utilize the book well and focus on homework and quiz grades and you can get an A. There is a lot of work involved and extra assigned reading but overall it gives you a better understanding for the material. GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS, if he sees you making the effort he'll add points to your grade
Although there are just two tests, a midterm and final, they are really really hard. Just make sure if you don't go to the class (1 hour 45 minutes), you absolutely watch the homework videos on FlipIt-very helpful, or even take notes on his powerpoints which he posts online. Lectures are so long but he does make the topics fairly interesting.
Professor Johnson is a great instructor and is clearly passionate about Econ. He's very helpful during office hours and puts a lot into his lectures to make them interesting for his students. Personally, I found the exams to be very, very difficult, and I got Cs/Ds on his midterm and final, which is unlike me. He's a great professor overall though.
Tries to make Economics fun and interesting, but falls short too often as he resorts to rambling far too often. Always is there to help but his exams are fairly difficult. Homework questions sometimes comes up on exams, so look over those, but using MyEconLab is annoying and doesn't promote learning. Overall, an annoying class I wouldn't take again
Professor Johnson is a great guy. But he is a terrible professor. I highly recommend you not take his ECON 1200 class. It is way too hard and Johnson does not explain the concepts well. And the exams are nearly impossible. Please do yourself a favor and don't take his class. Side note- this class cost me more than $120 bc of all the online programs
Professor Johnson is a pretty funny and personable guy, but his exams are meant to bring final grades down, and so they are ridiculously difficult. Some higher level Finance classes are easier than his econ 1200. Take 1200 with another professor or dodge it at a community college over break if you need to.
Very hard to describe. He's funny and energetic at all times of the day and loves talking about beer. A little inconsistent on his answers for some questions/ ideas. The online homework is a hassle but reasonable. Apparently you can get 10% extra based on "extraordinary achievement" but I've never heard of anyone actually getting it.
I didn't take 1201 or 1202 w him, so those classes may be a completely different story. But don't take 1200 if you care about your GPA.
Took 1201 during semester and 1202 in summer. Class is somewhat difficult but he is always there to help you. Takes a while to grade things and submit grades, but is very accessible and wants you to do well. Never mentioned he curved but when I calculated my grades I finished with about 5 points higher each class. Book is mandatory but useless.
I took 1201/1202 with Johnson and he's definitely my favorite prof. I've had so far. He's energetic in lecture but I swear by his office hours. Just going to him is so helpful, if you can't make office hours he'll make it work for you bc he wants his students to succeed. Curves grades! Slides are bit hard to follow, so look at them on your laptop!
Johnson is a funny guy in lecture. He reads off the powerpoints which are also posted online. There's online homework and quizzes each week but they're manageable. He's pretty available outside of class if you need extra help. Exams were pretty straightforward. He can be a little confusing at times but overall a good professor
Sometimes rambles and goes off topic a bit. Attendance isn't required but if you don't show up, then at least read the book. Textbook isn't required but is super useful if you sleep in class like me. You have to study for a decent grade. Homework online once or twice a week. Quizzes online once a week or every other week. Tests are similar to hw.
He's funny and is clearly passionate about econ but he rambles on and on. Very easy to zone out and even when I do pay attention, I feel like he hasn't said much. Book is absolutely necessary bc there are online homework and quizzes every week and the answers are usually straight from the book. Exams are HARD. Even with lots of studying, I failed
Principles of Microeconomics is not too bad of a class as long as you pay attention during lectures. PRofessor Johnson's power-points are kind of messy which makes taking notes down hard. If he offers to use the white board instead of the power-points make sure he uses the white board. He explains things much better when using a white board.
Very enthusiastic, tough exams, not an easy A.
Johnson is extremely enthusiastic and determined to get students excited about macroeconomics. Exams are tough and primarily application-based (as in, applying concepts to real-world situations). Not an easy A. Lectures are fast paced. Definitely go to office hours. I learned most material from the textbook, but lectures were informative.
This class was definitely not an easy A, barely. I would seriously recommend taking another professor for this class. The exams are extremely hard and I ended up with grades I've never had before. Studying doesn't cut it. The homework questions and exam questions are not similar
Professor Johnson is the best. His lectures are so entertaining, and he goes off a lot of tangents that has no relevance to the topic at hand. He is very helpful during office hours as well. His lectures are online, but I suggest attending lecture because it does help you understand the material better. However, it is not necessary.
Professor Johnson is hands down the best professor I have ever had. However, if you're looking for an easy A, this wouldn't be something to enroll in. If you want to learn and enjoy a college lecture you should 110% take his course. ALWAYS willing to help no matter your talent. Incredible professor. Textbook was helpful for me, but others not.
Most disorganized lecturer I've ever had, whole class is basically self taught from the textbook
He's funny and definitely knows what he's talking about. However, I usually don't know what he's talking about. He flips through slides at lightening speed, making it hard to take notes. I never truly feel like I've learned until I do as much extra work on my own as possible.
Johnson is a great professor. You don't have to go to lecture, but he's a great lecturer, so go anyways. He explains things well and makes a good effort to ensure everyone understands the concepts. He'll even re-explain things he feels as though he didn't explain well last class. Don't bother with the textbook this class is an easy A.
He's very animated. Economics is not the most interesting subject, but his personality made the class entertaining. He also does a great job pulling real world examples of economic events from the Wall Street Journal (make sure you read all the articles he sends out... they're heavily tested on exams) and he ended up turning me on to economics.
Took his 1201 in Spring 2016. A very nice and caring guy and he really loves the material he's teaching. I think 1202 is easier than 1201, so I didn't spend too much time on studying it, though you still need to go to the lectures and discussions as his powerpoints are not very clear and he explain them more during the lectures. Got A at the end.
Great professor. Strays from the slides in lecture but when he does he rambles about real world examples, which made the material more relevant and more interesting. He clearly loves his job and wants to make his students understand, you just have to be ready to put in some effort (about the average amount if you attend class)
Nice guy, you can tell he really likes his job and the material. He tries his best to keep it interesting when the material gets dry. Weekly homework and quizzes online, three papers, and two exams. Grades very fairly and wants his students to succeed.
Awesome guy! Really shows interest in the topic that he teaches. Although a lot of the material makes absolutely no sense, he does his best to get it through to the students. While he shows the most interest, I hear other professors offer online mid terms and finals, which allow for a greater chance to get a higher grade for the tough material.
Johnson is a true one of a kind. The powerpoints are messy and the material can be confusing at times. But, I have been going to his office hours and he really wants to help students who are struggling. I did well on the quizzes homeworks and summaries but failed the midterm and final. But, he curves those students who try, and goes to office hours
He is absolutely hilarious and I actually look forward to attending his lectures every week. He's also a really nice guy and understands that not everyone's brains are hardwired for economics. Sometimes hosts really helpful review sessions. Considering an economics minor because of how much he's made me enjoy economics. Definitely taking his Macro.
gives awesome lectures, you'll learn a lot if you show up and are engaged
Professor Johnson is the absolute best!! He is definitely the best professor I have ever had at UConn. He is so funny, a great lecturer, and actually cares about his students. 10/10 recommend.
Johnson is the absolute sweetest guy ever. The class can be really hard at some points but he hosts study sessions that are super helpful. Make sure you read the book because most of the hw and quizzes come directly from it. Tests are pretty tricky and you need to be able to think very conceptually to figure out the harder questions.
One of the best professors I had at Uconn. Very good and cater professor. Lectures are unorganized and dysfunctional, so be sure to pay attention. Class is divided up by a midterm, final, 3 short papers, homework and quizzes. Most of the homework and quizzes are very easy, and the 3 short papers arent a problem. Be sure to study for midterm/ final
This guy is great. His lectures were very dysfunctional, he stutters, and is hard to follow along but thats part of his charm and what makes him interesting. His exams werent easy but not too bad if you follow the readings/lectures. Dont be surprised if he repeats part of a lecture by accident though.
Prof Johnson is a super great guy. He is friendly, approachable, and genuinely loves what he teaches. The course is not a lot of work, but his lectures are definitely difficult to follow which makes understanding the content difficult. You will get out what you put it. Its also a very test heavy course.
Derek Johnson is one of the funniest professors and gives interesting lectures. However, he goes through slides fast so it can be difficult to take notes while in class. I found that reading the textbook on my own helped me to understand the material much better. The exams were hard, but theres weekly quizzes and homework to bring your grade up.
Professor Johnson was a great professor - occasionally during lectures he would go all over the place but it was super helpful that he posts the power points online. I took him again for macro because I got used to his teaching style and heard he was better than others. He does "extraordinary achievement" which boosted my grade a bunch.
Johnson is a solid choice for any Econ class, especially an intro course. He makes economics interesting which is good because it can be dry sometimes. Very energetic and passionate about the subject.
He cares about his students and their learning. He goes on tangents frequently though they are always related to economics (and have helped me understand principles in other econ classes :) AEH is very dry but he makes it interesting. If you are an econ major though I would recommend something else, we have so more stimulating econ courses.
Johnson's exams are actually hard, but the key to his class is to just pay attention to his lectures. This class is NOT about memorizing. It is actually about learning concepts and being able to apply them. Try not to Quizlet the hw or quizzes unless you truly don't know it or need to check your answer. The homework and quizzes help train ur brain.
his lecture slides are horrible, you have to really pay attention to what he says which is hard because hes all over the place and gets off topic now n then. he has a lot of energy when he talks. other assignments arent bad at all and hes very reasonable and helpful if you go to office hours
Derek Johnson is the nicest man on this planet. He's always willing to help students and he really wants you to succeed. Go to his study sessions and keep up with the work and you should be fine, tests are pretty tricky though and require a lot of knowledge of the concepts. Discussion is pointless I honestly never went and it didn't matter.
Prof Johnson is such a nice man. Cares a lot for his students. However, his lectures are confusing and not super helpful. Be prepared to teach yourself the content. Tests are pretty challenging. However, he always gives extra credit at the end of the semester so fairly easy to get an A.
Johnson is THE MAN. The type of guy you want as your teacher. Don't need to purchase book. All quizzes are taken online. Need to show up to a majority of lectures to understand material. GO TO OFFICE HOURS, it pays off because he offers a generous 10% curve and values your effort. Two tests (Midterm and Final) which are fair. Take this class.
Derek is a great professor, that's all I have to say.
Prof Johnson is an overall really energetic and nice guy. When it comes to teaching an introductory economics course, he struggles to get the main ideas across without making it confusing. He flips through his lecture slides very fast which can be frustrating. There is a midterm and a final (which are really difficult), 3 papers, and quizzes/hwk
I had him for my mandatory 1-credit UNIV class. He is very easy going and makes a lot of jokes. I recommend taking his class because he's a good guy.
Johnson is a funny and respectable man who lacks understanding of the dynamic and complex system that exists within an economy. His style is foolish for students taking an introductory economics class. He provides "appropriate" Keynesian economic policies without consideration of other economic schools of thought. Very little in class is useful.
Very funny guy and good teacher but class isn't easy.
A super nice guy but his lectures are a little bit all over the place. Somewhat hard to follow what he is saying. Exams are kind of hard but there are plenty of other opportunities in the class to boost your grade up.
Prof. Johnson really wants his students to not only know the general ideas of economics, but in a comprehensive way. His lecture was hard to follow. And be ready to read. Exams are hard, but grades can be boost up by others.
If you took economics in high school or have half of a brain, you will get a 100% on the 1st half of the year. Beware of the content at the end of the year, Johnson loves to cram the most complicated information at the end of the semester. He has extraordinary achievement which turned my 69% on the final into somehow getting an A in the class.
Dr. Johnson is a great professor who clearly is passionate about what he teaches, as well as taking care of the students taking his class. While you do have to work in his class, his lectures are typically very captivating though sometimes rushed and unorganized. If earned, he awards extraordinary achievement to help boost your semester grade.
Horribly organized lectures. Some slides can be considered as essays. Good luck trying to take notes because he flips back and forth between slides to read one sentence out of the whole page on the slide going back and forth everywhere. The whole class was non linear making it very troubling to understand subjects with no context.
Unorganized lectures. I rarely knew what he was talking about. Doing the online quizzes and homeworks can save your grade though.
This class can be little difficult at times, especially if you haven't taken an econ class before, but for the most part it isn't bad. There are online homework and quizzes assigned every Sunday but all the answers are usually online. They also take attendance at discussion every week and if you go he'll boost your grade at the end of the semester.
Johnson is definitely the most enthusiastic teacher you will ever have - and he really loves kicking stuff. Unfortunately I never found his lectures useful. He bounced back and forth between slides and I always had a really hard time following along. The midterm and final were absolutely horrible. If you go to his office hours youll get extracredit
Johnson is a funny guy and he seems super nice. Homework and quizzes are online and all of the answers are on quizlet if you look, BUT his tests are some of the hardest exams I have ever taken in my entire life and it is almost impossible to get a good grade on them no matter how much you study. I recommend you take this course with someone else.
Really nice guy, he's kinda quirky. Makes the boring parts fun. It's still Econ. TA was a cool dude, not 100% necessary to attend.
Professor Johnson is a great, pretty hilarious teacher. He gives good feedback, is accessible and engages people in the lecture. You have to read cuz the there are a lot of concepts but if you come to class you won't have to read as much after. I really enjoyed takin this course with him. Use Chegg for assignments and quizes and get those extra pts
Professor Johnson is a great guy, but not a great teacher. His lectures pretty much consist of him just reading off the slides and throwing some good jokes/examples in there. I only ever really learned the concepts from my TA during my weekly discussion. I never missed a lecture, but I felt like I had wasted an hour of my life after every class.
Taken as a 1st sem freshman. The class isn't easy, but definitely not super difficult. You have 3 easy papers, (easy 100%). The homework and weekly quizzes are all online. (Use chegg, quizlet :)) The exams can be difficult but do the homework and go to most lectures and you'll be fine. I skipped the majority of the discussions, you dont have to go.
Johnson is a great guy and very knowledgeable about the topics he talks about. His lectures are interesting but he does go very fast. Exams are about as hard as the hw assignments, which arent horrible but not easy either. Overall an interesting class though, and I learned a lot
Love this guy! I am taking him next semester for 1202 because he is great! He is hysterical, understanding, and makes concepts more interesting. The work's manageable, just put in the effort. I got a B and a C on the two exams and still finished with an A bc of office hours. If you build a connection and go see him for help, he will bump your grade
He's a hilarious & very knowledgeable professor. My friend & I would keep tallies on how many times he would say certain phrases ("quite literally", "if you will")He breezes through his slides that he posts online-copy notes prior to class so you're not rushing. Not sure how his extra credit works bc I got a 74 on the final and still got an A
You have a mid term and final, with 3 papers you have to write throughout the year. You have 1 online quiz and 1 online homework due every week. Great professor, but a hard grader. I heard the other econ professor is a lot easier.
Never showed up to class, never studied, and did online homework with minimal effort and passed.
The only class I've ever had below an A in. Failed the midterm and final but still passed since he grades on a curve. Got As on all three writing projects and weekly quizzes/homework. Lectures are terrible! I don't understand how he thinks we could retain all of the information he gives. Nice, funny guy, but I won't take a class with him again.
Took this as an incoming freshman, and man was it a wake up call! His tests are next to impossible, I failed midterm and final. Luckily, you have homework, quizzes, and writing projects to help your grade a little. He's a very nice guy, but his lectures are very hard to follow and all over the place, and did not help me for the exams. VERY hard.
Professor Johnson is a great guy, but his class was so hard. His lectures were so hard to follow and they were not organized. Weekly homeworks and quizzes took a long time to complete. Only two exams, but both were next to impossible and I had no idea how to study for them. He is a very cool dude, but his macro class was so difficult.
I took him over an intercession for 2102 which I recommend doing, because then you can spend all your time on that one course. A fair amount of work and actually having to think, but overall a nice guy. He wants you to do well and is really passionate about his field. Exams are rough, but the quizzes, homework and essays are easy.
Professor Johnson is an awesome lecturer. The class, from experience and my friends in the class, is harder than other professors, but I would recommend taking professor Johnson over the other professors. Johnson is passionate, caring, and knows the content. Although the class is tough, it is manageable and I was able to get an A.
Exams were actually insane because the questions don't reflect what he actually "teaches" or what's in the book. He'll bump you if you go to office hours, but as far as content goes I pretty much taught myself the entire class thru reading the book and watch other profs lectures. Nice guy, and I got an A bc of the curve.
Not a bad prof, he's very enthusiastic and can be funny but sometimes that makes him stray away from the content he is supposed to be teaching. Exams are pretty difficult but quizzes are really easy (make a group chat with people and have 1 person send the answers each week). He curves pretty nicely too. Very content heavy class.
The class content is relatively difficult, especially as the course gets going. For online learning, there's about one homework and one quiz due per week so definitely not a lot of assignments to turn in. Exams are hard, but he really teaches you economics. Not going to be an easy A, but definitely worth it. Ask for help and you'll do fine.
Professor Johnson is a very nice guy. The class itself is pretty difficult as the content gets continuously more difficult each week. The class is run very asynchronously. Every week he posts the work, including readings, lecture videos, and quizzes and gives a due date for everything. It is like this every week.
Derek Johnson is an excellent professor who knows economics and teaches us how to apply it to the real world. He is really hilarious inside and outside of class and the exams were not too difficult as long as you study. His office hours were helpful to prepare for exams and go over concepts. He also gives you a grade curve if you write a good paper
I took Derek for both 1201 and 1202. he is honestly the worst profs I've ever had. I got an A both times when I took his class but to be honest his lectures have nothing to do with his text and the test questions are ridiculously ambiguous. he curves a lot bc everyone does awful but I would avoid him if possible. Very nice guy though, but bad prof
Class would be the easiest A in the world if the quizzes and homeworks were anything like the exams, I have 95 on the hw and quizzes and the average final for our class of 300 students was a 54. Exams are nothing like the rest of the class and are very hard to prepare for.
Prof Johnson was the best! His grading was always up to date and held office hours weekly which would allow you to make a great connection with him. Hes really understanding of the time were in rn and loves to engage with his students. Hws were easier than quizzes and the final was cumulative but does remove your lowest hw and quiz grades
Took him last semester. You don't ever meet with the professor, but apparently his optional office hours are basically like class time because he goes over stuff. There is a lot of content and I find his homework, quizzes, and exams hard. Quizlet & Chegg helps a little, but when it's timed forget about it. I chose to take him again tho bc hes nice.
Look; Johnson is a nice guy. The amount of assigned material for his courses is unreasonably ridiculous. Lectures are read off a script so they fly past you and go right over your head (awful approach). Quizzes every single week. Mandatory response posts to discussion stuffs which draws b.s. from students. Really did not enjoy the class at all.
This class is absurdly difficult. The tests are not very similar to the guides and it's just a bunch of boring reading and questions. It's a classic weed out class and I would advise to stay away at all costs. People have said how they studied for hours and failed.
Do not take Derek Johnson unless it is last choice. Everyone fails finals and midterms and he didnt curve it. Average grade of my econ 1202 final was a 51 he doesnt respond to emails. His videos are so boring and assigns novels as weekly readings. Can practically chegg entire course cause he puts in no work effort to make new questions. 0/10
Prof. Johnson is really a great teacher. Economics can be daunting but he made it very understandable. In the online class, there were two office hours a week which were so so helpful and got the points across of the weeks readings and lectures so that if you attended, you were prepared for homework and quizzes, discussion posts boost your grade
Lectures are a must to pass. Good professor; does a good job teaching the content. Econ is not an easy class, and the book is also going to have to be read in order to do well. Pretty funny, very personable, overall a solid professor.
Professor Johnson is genuinely such a nice guy. Like he is truthfully the best. However, his class is difficult. Midterm and final are closed note and taken in class. Those are definitely challenging. There are 2-5 weekly homework and quizzes, depending on the week and the content. I would almost ensure 2 assignments a week. Nice guy, hard class.
His classes can be tough, so going to lecture is important. He works hard to help everyone, and grades fairly. He makes every effort to help people succeed in his class, and is incredibly accommodating and understanding. Very interesting and entertaining lecturer. His quizzes are hard but tests are usually much easier.
The midterm is 20% of your grade, the final is 25%. The midterm average was 62% he did not curve, even tho group of students talked to him about it. Very disorganized. Not a good lecturer. Exams are hard, he is a somewhat funny and nice person but not a good professor. Elective shouldn't be harder than 4 credit course with a lab!
If you want to take an economic class and do not want to make your life sucked, just go ahead and choose another professor. ECON1201 should be a really easy stuff, but in this professor's class, you can always get some "extra" knowledge. For example, asked to finish reading 10 documents before going to take the exam. That really confused me.
it is really the most awful teacher that l have ever met. Do not take his class, or you will get failed as usual. The homework and quiz are easy , but!!! the mid term and final are terrible.
As a lecturer, Derek is okay. By going to class, you can learn a decent amount and get a bit of a sense of the material, but it's important to read the textbook, which is a lot. The best advice is to go to extra help on a consistent basis because he'll give extra credit if you do.
His class is too difficult and we cannot get the key points!!!
Such a great guy! The class is tough, but if you attend his lectures and extra study sessions, he'll work with you to understand the material. He's really funny, and he's my favorite professor at UConn so far!
too hard to study, easy knowledge, complex curriculum, make everything very difficult
Johnson is really funny, and everything you need is in the lectures. GO TO THE LECTURES. ASK QUESTIONS. He won’t remember your name but he’s a terrific guy and he knows what he’s talking about and he is more than happy to help. He wants you to succeed. Bonus: if you have him in AUST108, count how many times he kicks the table
Prof. Johnson is a great person and it's clear he cares about his students and wants them to succeed. That being said, he is working with a very dry material and having to teach it to kids who don't really want to learn it. I think that he's a fairly average quality prof, with a good personality -- go to office hours and his extra review sessions!
While he is a great professor, he is one of the few I have that truly cares about cheating. Anything online is timed, and he makes it himself. Plus both major exams are timed and in person, so attendance and studying is a must. If you really really pay attention it isn't hard to get an A.
Professor Johnson himself is a nice guy and is very down to earth when you talk to him. However his class is pretty boring and the content is difficult to understand. It's a lot of self teaching but there's always office hours to try and help you. The class is a breeze once you understand the concepts.
Like most people I like Derek a lot as a guy but am iffy on him as a teacher. His lectures weren't all that great but they weren't terrible either. The class is fairly difficult even if you work hard, the exams really require you to know your stuff. He used a curve for the midterm because so many kids did god awful.
Do not take this class with this professor unless it's last resort. If you can take Econ 1201/1202 with another professor DO IT. Professor Johnson is a nice guy but lectures can be very confusing, and midterm and final are big dictators of your final grade. If you have to take this class, GO TO THE TA EXTRA HELP. That's the only way I passed.
Professor led very unorganized lectures and taught more advanced levels of economics than what the course entailed. His tests were extremely hard and pretty much made up your grade. The tests were more advanced than the material we learned I thought.
Exams are pretty difficult and don't match up necessarily with the lectures and notes taken in class.
i just started this class but i like this guy a lot. he's like spamton from deltarune. big entp energy. im expecting to get an A tbh
Professor Johnson is a really funny cool guy. He is super chill and extremely intelligent so you will learn a lot. Lectures are interesting, and he lets students design the syllabus with topics they want to cover. He can go off on tangents but only because he is very passionate about the material. GREAT guy with an extremely impressive background.
He's a good guy and very funny but you will probably end up doing really well in this class up until the midterm and then fail it like most of the students did. (midterm average: 60) I was doing great in the class and then when the midterm happened I got a 50 and proceeded to go to his office hours where he told me to "not worry about it".
He is a great professor. ATTEND THE LECTURE. BASE YOUR NOTES ON WHAT HE SAYS. Try understanding what he says cause he tests you on it (That's how I aced my midterm) Read the textbook. He gives articles to read you honestly dont even have to read it, he gives you pointers for the article and test you based on what he said. Heavy on dad jokes.
Derek Johnson is a good guy, but his lectures are kind of boring. There are weekly homework assignments and quizzes along with extra credit (5 free pts) and doing well on all of them is an easy way to guarantee an okay grade. Everything is online except the midterm and final, both of which are difficult and require an understanding of the material.
Funny but class sucks. studied so much for the midterm, got a 64 (class avg 60) with the curve, but got 80s on practice tests. final and midterm are in class which sucks (if you move ur eyes he'll take you out the room) There is an extra credit every chapter. Bit hard to reach for office hours bc so many waiting but he usually tries to accommodate
Such a boring professor. Never went to classes except on exam days. you have to buy a McGrawHill account to do quizzes but you only do 3? and it was $100 :( 3 or 4 small papers and then the final thesis that is 12 pages. the study guide for exams are a list of a hundred topics and then the exam is like 4 questions, no multiple choice just essays.
Johnson is awesome, he is hilarious and makes lectures interesting. He has the class design the syllabus which is super cool and will research and present topics students want to learn about even if he doesn't know everything about it. He can get off topic and the class is a lot of work because of the W but overall great guy and a cool class!
This class is not well organized. You pay more than $100 for a online teaching platform to do 3-4 quizzes. All you can get from this $100 is at most 15% of your final grades. There is extra credit Extraordinary Achievement that counts up to 10% of your final grades. However, you would have no idea how to get the extra credit. Syllabus is useless.
Economics is a very hard course so pay attention in lectures. Studying outside of school is an absolute must.
Gives a lot of of work and his finals and midterms seem nothing like what he teaches. Anytime I went to him for help for office hours he seemed hesitant and would refer me to the TA's instead. His midterms and finals are all multiple choice which is a plus I guess.
If you don't do good in exams it will effect your grade by alot. other then that he is a great but if you can i would suggest taking with someone else since his exams are harder then others.
I took this class over the winter intersession and was not disappointed. When I the class began I felt a bit overwhelmed, but you can do without a lot of the "required readings." He sends long long long long (pages long) announcements out that are important to read but if you give an honest effort you should be able to get by fine. Chegg helped ;)
Johnson made the lecture pretty interesting, homework and quizzes are all online not hard. Offers some extra credit which is cool. Midterm wasn't too bad got a 92 but did study with the old exams he provides for practice. Final was definitely more challenging, you should study for sure. Overall though decent class would take Johnsons class again.
Weekly homework and quizzes, gives a lot of helpful material for the midterm and final
Derek Johnson is a wonderful professor. He is very knowledgeable and explains topics very well. You also get the sense that he cares about his students. I would recommend him and take his classes again.
Prof Johnson is one of my favorite professors. He is energetic during lectures and does a good job to keep everyone engaged (even if it's a bit boring at times). He clearly cares about his students' success. Homework/quizzes are online and do not take much time. 2 exams on paper in class, but he provides good study material. I highly recommend.
Derek Johnson is a great person, but his teaching style is all over the place. You must read the textbook to succeed on homework/quiz assignments, but pay really close attention to his lectures to pass the exams. Exams are in class on paper (scantron), and are heavily theory based. Not accessible via email (due to very large number of students)
Funny guy, gave reasonable exams, and made material easy to understand. Reading the textbook is crucial, but otherwise it was a good class
Very energetic and passionate professor, but if you don't want to put in a fair amount of outside time to teach yourself the material, I wouldn't recommend. A bit challenging if you've never taken an econ class before, and you end up leaving lectures feeling as if you haven't learned anything. If you do take it, rely on the textbook.
I think that Johnson is a very energetic and nice professor but he sort of just reads off the slides, and blabbers. I feel like I am not being taught anything. There is sort of a lot of work on the weekends which is annoying. Again Nice guy, but bad professor. Svalestad I wayyyy better
I like the way Johnson teaches and how his lectures match up with the textbook. Economics is hard in general and I found that his lectures weren't AS helpful as they could be. He is very nice and funny and I recommend you take him. I know opinions differ heavily but he has been trying to change up his grading and approach to benefit his students
Very entertaining guy. Very enthusiastic about teaching and always keeps his students alert. Energetic and I find bis study sessions useful. Truly passionate about his work and cares about his students. Easy to approach with any questions about anything. Definitely worth taking this class. Would recommend it to any intro-level economics student.
one of if not the best professors for econ in general gives amazing lectures, willing to give out extra study sessions, and accessible outside class if you can, take his class. but do keep in mind his test are VERY VERY HARD so you will have to use the textbook and do lots of practices in your time too.
So hard for this Econ course. Prof Johnson's teaching was attractive but final is extremely hard!!
It's impossible to not love Prof. Johnson as a guy but god is he all over the place. He would often give conflicting info about important concepts, and in general is very unorganized. This class is genuinely hard, and honestly unless you understand ECON concepts really well you should avoid taking it.
Derek Johnson is the man! The class is a lot of work because in order to do well you must read the book, do practice problems on myeconlab, and go to class. But if you put the work in, you will find that it is not hard to get an A and you learn a lot from him. He's really funny and good at teaching the material. I always had a good time in class.
It's hard to not like Prof Johnson as a person, but his style can be hit or miss depending on how you learn. Exams are VERY hard, but if you work at it, it's easier than expected to get a good grade, and you will learn a LOT. Overall if you aren't willing to put in the effort you will struggle, but if you work at it this class pays off
Johnson's class is graded by 3 exams, but he curves towards your best one heavily if you show improvement. He gives the study guide only a few days before exam. He is kind and passionate about the content. You need to read the materials to do well in the class and meet with him for office hours.
He's a nice and very passionate guy, but the way he set up his class is awful. The exams are extremely tough and you need to read the whole textbook to do good. It is extremely important not to fall behind since each chapter is super long and if you skip even one chapter it'll pile up quickly. He does give extra credit since half the class fails.
His lectures are engaging and he genuinely tries, but the midterm and final are ridiculously difficult. Curves them - how I passed. Keep up with the homework and homework quizzes - those will come in CLUTCH. Our class did so bad that he gave us weekly extra credit, so he's clearly responsive. Wouldn't recommend him if you're not interested in econ.
Professor Johnson is clearly passionate about economics, and ensuring that generations to come are informed and care about this subject. He makes lectures fun, and while they aren't mandatory, it is helpful to attend them. Make sure to stay on top of all the homework, quizzes, and study for tests!!! They aren't hard if you stay on top of your work!
Johnson is the man. If you go to class and do the weekly quiz and hw and study for the 2 exams you will do well. The extra credit and curved exams helped out a lot. Exams are very difficult but he is willing to work with you if you are struggling.
He is an extremely tough grader and you are graded on 3 written exams that count toward your final grade. lectures are all over the place and boring. Don't take him!
bruh his exams are so hard.
He's funny, but his lectures are boring and packed with unorganized information. His exams are quite difficult and the homework tends to be, too. I recommend doing all the extra credit and using those videos to study. He just didn't do anything special for me. I did well in the class but it was for sure hard. Slides are posted online though.
This guy is all over the map. If you have him you're better off going to the Qcenter and teaching it to yourself. I had bombed the midterm and I had gone to his office hours and he gave me no strategies or tips on studying better when I asked and said to not worry about my 40. The guy is funny and super nice but good lord.
Johnson was very enthusiastic during his lectures, but they can be kind of hard to follow. However, overall I would recommend him.
Not good with email, go to office hours. Talks about real world connections while not explaining concept in theory well. Attendance is online (and uses your location) and sometimes he does "polls" for credit. Don't get the textbook, you can access it through Achieve where he posts assignments. Get ready to teach yourself and ignore his lectures.
Extreme hard quiz
Professor Johnson is an amazing professor- I wouldn't listen to the reviews claiming otherwise. If you attend lectures, process the content, and complete HW, Quizzes, XC, you will find it easy to obtain an A in the class. Lectures are entertaining, albeit fast paced. Exams are curved heavily.
His lectures are very enthusiastic and easy to stay on task and engaged. However, he talks and goes through the slides very fast. Exams are more on the difficult side, but "passable" when you study well. He does review sessions before exams and makes it clear what is going to be on them. Homework is hard because it has stuff not from lecture.
He was funny and overall really nice. He posts all of the powerpoints so if you miss a class it really isn't a big deal. Homework and a quiz every week, both online on achieve. The midterm and final were hard.
His personality is great but honestly, he's pretty intense, and the semester's grading is awful. You have no idea what you have in the class because of how they use husky ct and achieve. There were only 2 exams, a midterm (20% of your grade) and a cumulative final (25% of your grade) and they were NOT easy. Ex cred it everything!!!
Johnson is a great lecturer - I found the actual macro concepts boring, but lecture was not. Exams are difficult but if you study you'll be fine. There's a generous curve, which is why I ended with an A. Do the extra credit!
I've had professor Johnson 3 times now and you can't help but love the guy. That being said he's admittedly very all over the place and his classes are pretty disorganized. Despite this he's really good at teaching economics from a down to earth perspective, and while his classes can be tough I think they're worth taking if you're an ECON major.
Professor Johnson clearly cares about the students and keeps the lectures engaging for the most part. While his exams are in person and on paper, you will do well by studying the lecture slides and utilizing the practices quizzes/exams. Johnson is available during office hours and thoroughly answers questions.
Even though this is a W course on top of the expected 15 pages that a W course requires Professor Johnson has students do homework, 5 quizzes, 4 peer reviews which are 25% of your grade not to mention the final two are two twelve page papers, two midterm exams, and one final exams. It's excessive, and exams are cumulative.
Some of the concepts were pretty tough to understand, and if you space out a lot, you're probably going to struggle a lot. Keep up with readings, and really try to actively understand what you're seeing in lectures, rather than mindlessly copying notes, and you'll do fine. He's engaging, very understanding about late work if you have a good reason.
nice and funny guy, but midterm and final tests were very difficult, gives extra credit which helps, lectures were pretty helpful and although he referenced the textbook a lot, i don't think many students every really used it as it was not super duper important
Derek Johnson is suuch a funny lecturer. Definitely make sure to do the extra credit assignments bc the midterms and finals can be a bit confusing (but reviewing the lecture slides and redoing the homework can be helpful). The curves are really good too
Bad teaching. Horrible grader. Lots of reading
Bro said to write down your notes on the front page of the test. The test is not open notebook.
Take Owen instead. Johnson is amazing person but horrible professor. His lectures are long and quite boring imo and his exams are extremely difficult.
Do extra credit, his questions on the tests are genuinely confusing, got an F on the midterm. Better off reviewing the extra credit lecture videos that are from other sources.
He's genuinely a good guy. He tried to make lectures interesting and actually cares about the topic. However, macro concepts can be hard to understand. He sometimes goes too fast past topics and skips around slides. Exams are difficult and do not make sense, especially for an intro class. Do the extra credit and hw! Curves are generous as well.
Very passionate about Economics and is a very funny professor. There are two exams, a midterm and final. Both are extremely difficult and very hard to get a good grade on. However, he has a very good curve. Make sure you do all the extra credit assignments as they boost your grade a lot.
Great guy. Hilarious professor, tries to make lecture as fun and entertaining as he can. Consistent HW and quizzes assigned weekly. Tests make up half of your grade, final is worth a lot. Attendance not mandatory but if you don't go you can fall behind. DO EXTRA CREDIT! Worth a whole letter grade, I'm B instead of A now, I didn't do them till late
Hilarious guy! I had him for 1201 and 1202 and he was equally good. Graded on two exams which are incredibly difficult but are curved SO SO MUCH. Make sure to do ALL the extra credit and study his slides well!!
had him for micro, genuinely a likeable guy. do the hw, chegg the online quizzes, study for the exams, go to class if ur confused, and do every extra credit. if you can, take owen instead.
Grade is made up of weekly quizzes, a midterm and final. The exams are very content heavy and difficult. Take a different professor if you can.
I was told by SO many people not to take this class but took it anyway. I had an amazing experience and chose to sign up for more classes with Professor Johnson. As long as you do the homework and quizzes and study you should be fine. Going to his office hours as well as asking questions in class can help a lot, he will definitely recognize you.
Good professor, good teaching, horrible grader
Entertaining lectures, but tough exams. Do all extra credit and use unstuckstudy ai for study prep to boost your grade.
Professor Johnson is a very kind and infectious human being. His enthusiasm for the subject that he teaches definitely rubs off on his students. That being said his lectures are far too comprehensive to fully grasp the subject in such a short period of time. We wrote more than 25 pages for all of our essays, on top of weekly quizzes and homework.
Don't take him, take Owen. Even if you have to wait a semester, just do it, your grade will tank if you take him. He tries his best to make class fun and he's genuinely a good guy, but he's just a tough grader. Exams are difficult, average is usually a ~50% for micro and macro. Just take Owen.
He's a great person but, a terrible teacher. His lectures are very energetic but, he talks about random examples for the bigger half of them and only briefly stops on slides. All you really walk away with is an analogy or example. He also makes his tests unbelievably hard and he does not have extra credit this semester either. Do not take him.
Overall, Professor Johnson is a teacher who truly cares about his work and the student's reception to the content. He is engaging and tries to maintain a positive and humorous attitude during lectures. However, his lectures are all over the place, and he often makes things more confusing and convoluted than they need to be and is hard to learn from
There are so many homework and quiz questions every week (but they're all online so it's less terrible), but the midterm and final are brutal. His lectures always go off track, and we only get through a tiny portion of the presentation. You'd be better off just reading the textbook and self-studying instead of going to the lectures.
Great Pro. Easy A, go for it! 筷泡
make it easier plz
Prof. Johnson genuinely cares about his subject and the success of his students. However, his lectures (although entertaining) usually get very sidetracked and he does not do an overall good job of teaching the material. In-person midterm and final combined are 50% of your grade, the rest is online HW and quizzes. The exams are very difficult.
He is nice, but no one has any idea what he is saying. This course is tough; you only have a mid-term and a final, and both are hard. I would only take this if you have to.
impossible exams
Good person, bad professor. Lectures were very unorganized and sporadic, clicks through those slides like his remote is on fire. Goes on tangents talking about something unimportant. He makes easy concepts hard to understand. The midterm was hard (average was around 50-60%), final was easier. Overall not horrible, just a little bumpy.
(Fall 2023)He's a really nice guy but doesn't teach well. The midterm and final was really bad. I got good grades on all the weekly online quizzes(u can guess y) but that didn't matter when it came to the midterm and final. The average was nearly failing on the midterm. He apologized in 1201 for how he taught 1202 last semester which speaks volumes
Honestly I only passed his Econ classes because of extra credit and I did decent on the midterms. His lectures can be interesting, but are often hard to follow. Seems like a cool prof though he chill. Only take if he's still offering extra credit and you are confident that you can do well on the midterm/or final.
Derek is a super engaging and passionate professor. The class was more challenging for a 1000 level course, but if you go to class and pay attention you will do fine. Homework is graded which is annoying but it prepares you well for exams. For your sake take notes in class! So many people didn't and missed things he said that were on the exams.
Overall good personable guy but very difficult exams. Makes concepts harder to wrap your head around than just learning on your own. Take svalstad if u can.
Derek is a great guy, he's funny in lectures, and really tries to explain the content to the best of his abilities. Graded on midterm, cumulative final, and hw/online quizzes weekly. The weekly HW and online quizzes aren't that hard and don't take too long, are a good way to practice the material. Lectures are important to go to, gives good insight
D.J, what a guy. Great class even better man. He acts as though he is off a perc every class, sometimes in a good way and sometimes in a bad way, Enjoy!
Prof. Johnson is a great guy and makes his lectures very funny. But he's so scatterbrained that listening to him makes you more confused. Exams are very difficult, even if you fully understand the content. He grades on the idea of the "most correct" answer, which is extremely frustrating. Save yourself the stress and don't take his class.
He is a very good professor and cares about his students. The exams are difficult but if you pay attention in lectures and read the textbook ****, you will be fine. He said during the semester, if you get an awful grade on the midterm you can still end with an A. Weekly homework and quizzes all online are decently easy.
Nice person, bad professor. Talks in circles and doesn't go super in depth on topics.
It was very hard to keep up with him.
Really great and funny professor! Make sure to really study for the midterm and final as that is a large portion of the final grade (and the only tests). There are also quizzes each week that are online and at home (they were pretty straightforward if you did the homework first). Go to office hours if you are struggling!!!
He is passionate about the material during his lectures. Other than that, terrible. I taught myself the material from the textbook. I would go to class with an understanding of the textbook, and he would confuse me even more. Extremely difficult midterm and final. Gave one class extra credit but not others. Would not recommend it.
Honestly really bad professor. Only reason I got an A was because I took econ in high school. He's always giving really weird and CONTROVERSIAL examples, clearly does not look at current events. I really disliked this class and teacher I literally not look both ways before crossing the side walk.
Mr. Johnson was a good professor but the class was honestly pretty difficult. He had decently engaging lectures but the exams and weekly quizzes were pretty difficult even with studying. I would rather not take him again if i could avoid it but it wouldn't be the end of the world.
Love himmmmm
This class was very low stress and easy. There are weekly homework quizzes but he drops the lowest two grades and as long as you pay attention in class and take notes they'll be easy. The midterm and final were also in person and you couldn't use notes but they were all multiple choice. He also reused a lot of questions from the homework quizzes.
He teaches you absolutely nothing in class that is needed for any quiz or test. He's also very loud and over the top and rambles about useless things. Don't bother going to lectures, just read the textbook and articles. You will gain nothing from attending lectures.
Professor Johnson is a pretty humorous and overall jovial guy, so his lectures are usually entertaining. However, his class may be difficult if you don't have prior experience with Economics classes or aren't passionate about the subject. That said, even if you do poorly on the midterm/final, homework will definitely boost your final grade.
Pathetic is one way to put it. starts every 50 minute class Five minutes late. Lets us out five minutes late. He missed two classes that he did not make up. Utters and mutters his way through bland slides. Tells students not to worry when they ask about exams then grades us like he's god's gift to earth. One more example of the standards at uconn.
He tries to entertain the class by making jokes, but he talks a whole lot of nothing. He elaborates on his power points in class and tries to connect them to the real world, but you are better off learning on your own. He makes you read articles that will be on the midterm, so be aware. I don't recommend taking his class. HE IS VERY LOUD and boring
(Fall 2023) Johnson is a cool guy, not a good prof. It's structured poorly, his lectures are unhelpful/off-topic. He's better for people who really care about economics, so if you don't, just take Svalested. I'm retaking with him currently, & it's much better. iClicker is a pain. Wants you to memorize more about Keynes than actual macroeconomics
I took Micro and it was horrible and I was 1% away from a B-. We have a weekly quiz and homework and his lectures make no sense and have nothing to do with the tests and are hard to listen to. The midterm and final was horrible and ridiculously hard. Do not take his class if I could give it a zero I would.
Super chill guy but course is graded on two exams with no curve anymore. Exams are wordy, long and contain questions from outside articles. There's no chance to succeed unless you are a great test taker. He's always on something, randomly wanted a round of applause in the middle of his lectures. Exams have questions on drugs. Take Svalstad or die.
challenging exams. This guy is passionate about what he is teaching just a challenging class to follow as someone who has never taken an econ course before.
Super nice guy, you can tell he's passionate about econ, but this class was insane. kind of assumes we already know what he lectures about, and even as a senior econ major, some of it was way over my head. only took it for my writing requirement, but if you need an econ W, take anything else. I think the only reason I did well was because of my TA.
His exams are based on his lectures, but he cannot teach to save his life. Boring lectures and you'll definitely fall asleep in class. Exams are difficult so prepare for them. He makes you read extra articles and doesn't remind you what is due. You'll get denied when asking for an extention. Don't take his class!! Choose another one
Derek Johnson is a great (and really entertaining) person, but not the best teacher. As someone who isn't a great test taker, I wish I didn't take this class. The class is 50% based on homework and quizzes, 20% on the midterm, and 30% on the final. The exams are BRUTAL. For reference, I didn't miss a single class and received a 50% on the midterm.
Although Derek Johnson is a very funny dude and his lectures can be hilarious at some times, he is very disorganized and his slides are very difficult to follow. The midterm average score for this semester was a 55% and he declined to curve it at all. Midterm and finals are very hard. Don't take this class if you don't wanna self study.
If you have the option to take this with someone else, do it. Exams were BRUTAL and combined, worth 50% of your grade. Half of the exams were about random Wall Street Journal articles. He did not curve any of the exams. He is a mess when teaching, his lectures make no sense. Great guy but truly was an awful class.
Awesome guy. Very funny and likable. Lectures are all over the place and not organized. Read the textbook
HORRIBLE-- avoid at all costs. in person final and midterm, both nearly impossible (class average was a 22% on MT this semester, and around a 35% last semester). lectures are random and make no sense, and the exams are so difficult that I doubt Derek himself could answer his questions correctly. this class ruined my semester
Probably the worst professor I've encountered thus far. Extremely bad lecturer, though very passionate. Weekly lockdown quiz + weekly homework. Midterm and final as the only exams, but they're extremely difficult and worded to the point that they aren't testing your knowledge, they're testing your fine reading skills. Take the other professor.
Uses slideshow that is very difficult to follow. Doesn't grade anything or put up assignments to be graded, you have no idea until after the final exam what your grade is. Midterm grade average for class was low and he gave no curve. He throws out a lot of articles that are long. Questions on tests are difficult, but can do good if you self study.
i won't wear safty belt before i drive to this class because i would rather die then attending it
Midterm and Final exams make up 50% of your grade and are unnecessarily difficult. If you're not a great test taker, you will not do well. Does not curve grades. You won't know your real grade until the end of the semester. The lectures are very disorganized. He is a very kind and funny guy though.
Great guy, very funny and engaging. Midterm and Final make up 50% of grade and are unnecessarily difficult. If you are not a great test taker, you will not do well. Does not curve exams. Lectures are extremely disorganized. I regret taking this course with him, if you can, choose a different professor.
Very good lecturer and very accessible, class can be difficult if just taking for a gen-ed, but otherwise I would take classes with him again.
Avoid taking him at all costs. For the sake of your GPA, take Owen. Lectures are so disorganized. Homework and quiz questions are confusing. Midterm and final are worth 50% of your grade. Both taken the "old fashioned way", paper and pencil. Doesn't curve his exams either. He's a good and funny guy, but sucks as a professor.
Study all you want for the exams, you won't get above a 70. I studied so hard and only ever got a 58 and 60 on the midterm and final; everyone else I knew got 40s. He gives extra credit only because he DOESN'T curve the tests. Homework grade consists of several assignments due on Sunday with Lockdown Browser.
I consider myself a good student but his exams were unnecessarily difficult. Even if you really study and understand the material you get an awful grade. Homework and extra credit really boost your course grade so make sure you do it. There was one 20 minute online quiz per week using lockdown browser. Must go to lecture and STUDY all readings
Although as a person, I loved Prof Johnson, his lectures were beyond confusing. He's passionate and clearly knowledgeable on what he teaches, but cannot translate it to teach people who do not know what he's teaching. Midterm and final are both in person, on paper, and no note sheets. If you're not an economic genius, you won't thrive in his class.
He is a nice guy but his tests are very difficult. He also recently added a lockdown browser for the online quizzes. There are so many extra credit opportunities though so make sure you do them!!! This class is definitely passable, don't be discouraged by your midterm exam score. Just do all the work and read the textbook.
Derek is an alright guy, but this course was unreasonably difficult. The exams were really tricky and hard to study for. His teaching was somewhat helpful, but a lot of the material needs supplemental instruction to be fully understood. Attending office hours was helpful.
Don't get me wrong, very passionate, but DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!! I took Macroeconomics in high school and he does not teach the content of the course correctly. A lot of articles assigned, and will be included in tests and quizzes. Lectures are messy and overall his teaching style is not there. Be warned!!!!
With all due respect, Derek Johnson should no longer be a professor at Uconn. He only repeats what is assigned as reading in text books but in lectures just further complicates it. He is a great person do not get me wrong, but I do not know how he is still teaching because of how well he is known just for being a bad professor. Ask anyone on campus
Johnson is an infamously hard professor who has a teaching style that doesn't mesh well with some students. His assignments can be cumbersome, the exams are dense and hard, and the material gives you a bad feeling at times about the material.
If you read the textbook and take notes as you take the course, you'll be fine. Just don't rely on his lectures alone since he tends to jump around which makes the material harder to understand. Go to his office hours for help, he sometimes gives extra credit when you go.
Hardest exams ever for a 1000 level course. The test prep such as practice exams have nothing to do with what's on the exam. Unless you're math or Econ savvy this will be an extremely difficult course.
Professor Johnson is a great person but a horrible professor. The midterm class average was a solid 17/30 and he curves it 1 POINT out of 30. I personally think I did fine on the midterm but he is not a great professor and by far the most infamous professor at UConn.
If you complete the extra credit, attend class regularly, and ensure you understand the material, you will do well. His exams are quite challenging, but he's not as bad as everyone says.
Hard exam.
I hated this class it was awful, horrible professor, super nice guy. Extremely exam heavy, nothing on the exam was explained in class. Do not take econ with derek.
Prof. Johnson is very passionate and genuinely cares about students' understanding of the material. If you work hard, try your best, and ask for help when you're struggling, he'll remember and help you out. Exams are very difficult, but he will change how he weights them if you show hard work and improvement.
He is very passionate, but not a good teacher. The class average for his midterm was like a 62% and he curved it 1 point out of 30.
All tests; midterm and final, are in person, pencil and paper. Homework, extra credit, and online quizzes every week. Lectures don't help for tests. He just rambles about his Seattle Mariners 👎.
Just horrible dont take this guy
Derek Johnson is truly an amazing guy. Lectures are really entertaining, and you can tell he's extremely passionate about what he does. Yes, exams are HARD! However, if you study and go to office hours, you'll have no issues. If you want an easy A, then don't take it. If you like a good challenge and enjoy economics, then go for it!
He is a nice guy and knows what he is talking about, but doesn't know how to teach. His test basicallyhase nothing about what he talks about in lecture. The tests are much harder than you will expect. Very hard grader. Do all the extra credit and homework.
I went to every lecture and stayed engaged, but this was the hardest class I've taken. Professor Johnson is kind, but his fast, unclear lectures were hard to follow. He rarely answered emails, often canceled office hours, and the midterm average was 56%, which shows how challenging the class was.
DO NOT TAKE HIM GENUINELY made my semester 20x worse than it should have been.
DONT TAKE HIM
The worst teacher I've ever had. He needs to learn how to actually talk about econ during his lectures. Half of the topics we are graded on, he barely touches. Everyone who says he's awesome is only rating based on personality. He's a terrible grader, has insanely hard tests, and does not focus on the content needed to pass the course. Fire him pls
do not take this class. it is extremely difficult and he spends most of lecture talking about bs. he is nice in office hours, but the class should not be this hard, he is just not a good teacher. good luck.
Do yourself a favor and find a different professor. Not really understanding and is just kind of a bad lecturer. The class material is very difficult in my opinion and even with reading the textbook a lot I didn't do well. I did go to almost every lecture too. If math or graphs isn't your strong suit, take a different class.
Never in my 20 years have I felt as intellectually challenged as I have in this class. Genuinely panicking about my future due to an INTRO class. He is a nice guy, don't get me wrong, but he does not know how to teach, or organize any of the study material. He gives max 5% extra credit. The class average for the midterm was a failing grade.
His lectures can be a little confusing because he will go on occasional tangents about random econ topics. His tests are fairly difficult. Half of the question is trying to figure out what he is asking. He is very entertaining. However, you need to know about 20 WSJ articles for the midterm/ final. Not as bad as people make him out to be.
Skill issue.
do not take with prof. johnson. took this class as a toi. genuinely my hardest class this semester. the work is easy once you understand it but its really no thanks to the professor, you have to teach yourself a lot of it.
Not: "What color is the sky?". Instead: "John spots a widespanning layer made up of gases outside a 7/11. He sees bundles of vapor of differing densities adrift in this layer. Also, streaks of light, which he identifies as the aurora borealis, are visible. everything else held constant, what is the color complimentary to that of the gaseous layer?"
You'll laugh several times each lecture, but will you really understand what he's teaching? The answer for most is probably no. It's not necessarily that the content is incredibly difficult, it's that most students are not dedicated to reading multiple textbooks for hours and essentially teaching themselves the class. Exams are difficult.
Lowkey hard class but if you lock in and put 30+ hours of studying into midterm and final, you should be chilling. Professor is ok I guess.
Really difficult for a 1000 level, intro class that many students need as a major/critical requirement. Personally did not do well on the midterm— final felt easier but was by no means easy. Whatever you do, DO NOT SKIP CLASS. It may be a bit boring and disorganized but you'll at least learn something and Derek is a fun and entertaining guy.
Awful. If you care about your grades or sanity, take Owen instead. Extremely unorganized class with only 2 exams (50% of grade) that are impossible to get above an B on regardless of how much you study. Content is often overlooked and we were almost 4 weeks behind by the end of the sem that we had to them cram in at the last second before the final
Ive taken macro & micro with derek before so I knew what to expect. He gets a lot of hate but I rlly like him as a professor. He is really good in lecture. Theres no homework so grade is based off 3 exams which was rough but he won't let people fail his class. He gives extra credit and weights the grades so you can get the best grade possible.
Approachable, funny, and very helpful. Class isn't impossible but if you don't read, you will fail. Exams test understanding, not memorization. Weekly work ~3-4 hours. Stay consistent, use resources, and ask for help early. Extra credit available. If you can take Owen, do, but if not, don't worry. He makes the material engaging.
Derek Johnson, oh where to begin… Professor Johnson takes what should be an extremely easy class and makes it very difficult. For an intro class, Econ was way too hard. His lectures scratch the surface of what you will need for your tests, and honestly won't help much. He's a nice guy and can be entertaining though.
