Martinez is awesome! If you need a math class and he is teaching it, definitely take it with him. He is really good at explaining things and understanding your questions--gives points where they are deserved and cares about his students. Highly recommend.
Derek is an amazing teacher, i took his class last semester and he is really good at his job. He does a great job explaining the material and is super friendly when you go to his office hours. I highly recommend him.
Hands down the best professor I've had in any subject. Derek taught me more about calculus in Calc3 than I learned in Calc 1 and 2 combined. Genuinely cares about his students. The level of clarity is simply outstanding!
Derek is the best teacher I have ever had. I thought math was something I just could not do. Derek makes it clear, logical, and enjoyable. All this, and he's just a super guy. Wish I could take more courses with him. Awesome.
Tough course, but he tries to make it as easy as possible. Office hours are helpful as well as the recitation. Lots of homework, but the homework helps for the quizzes and exams. However, sometimes bookwork doesn't match lecture. Overall great teacher.
Honestly, Derek is great. I took him for calc1 and calc3 and even though calc3 is though he is willing to help. He is super cool and funny and very well known for being an awesome individual.
I dropped out of high school after being 3 years behind in math. I began in Derek's College AlgebraIntermediate combo course and he brought me from ground zero to now in the calc's. His enthusiasm for math has changed my outlook entirely. He is a very clear and fun lecturer despite some difficult subject material. He's an incredible math teacher.
Really a good professor. I am definitely going to take classes with him in the future. If you show that you need help, he is happy to help you out. The recitation is a big help too!
Derek is extremely willing to help you if you come to his office hours. His TA's are typically the best a math teacher can have! I've never had to study for a math test until I took this class so be prepared to actually study for tests!! Great teacher wish I could take him every year for math!
Derek is an amazing professor. You can tell that he enjoys teaching and helping students. He does a good job at connecting new topics with older topics which makes it easier to understand. I recommend Derek 100%!
Excellent Professor, I took Calc 3 and Ordinary Differential Equations with Derek and he made both classes very manageable. He is a great Professor with a good sense of humor as well. Highly recommend
Derek is by far the best professor I've taken at UNM. He is approachable, excited to teach, and is fair. All of his exams are not surprises. He pulls questions from the homework or notes from lecture. If you work hard, practice the homework and even visit him every once in awhile for questions, you'll get an A.
He is very clear on the majority of the material and there really is no surprises on the exams at all and he is an amazing instructor just don't get overconfident when you do well on the first three exams because the final is a LOT harder than the regular exams. Other than that great instructor would recommend. 1010
Derek is great. He teaches math courses so if you have a weak math background it will take some effort on your part. It has been awhile since I have taken any college courses and I have appreciated how much he likes to review basic concepts from previous courses. He really wants his students to succeed and makes himself available to them.
He is honestly one of the best Calculus teachers I've had next to Kevin Burns. He explains everything clearly, and if you go to his office hours he is more than happy to help you understand. This was a calc. III class, so of course nothing is going to be easy, you actually have to put in the effort
AMAZING PROFESSOR! However, I feel as though word has gotten around to him that he was "easy". It is fall 2015 and he has gotten very tough! In other words, he went from "0 to 100 real quick". His grading has become harsher as well as tests harder. But overall, he is the best of all the math teachers! Amazing, and I have learned alot.
I had him for Calc 3 and he made the class easy and understandable. He would always go back and review background topics that we were supposed to have learned in previous classes if we said we didn't understand them. Made the lectures very clear and understandable. The homework was very useful and related to what was on the tests.
Are you read for something spicy?
Easiest class ever! :
Derek was a very easy going teacher, he is very receptive to being asked questions and clarifying. This class is not easy though! You have to be ready to put in a lot of hours on a weekly basis, this is not a class you can just slack off in. Lots of opportunity for extra help outside of class, take advantage of it. I recommend his class!
Exams are straight from homework so if you do all the homework right before the exam and study the obvious exam questions it is a lot easier. lectures are very good but homework is complex when seeing it for the first time. Awesome instructor and wants to see you succeed.
Derek is a wonderful professor. He is really smart and funny and makes the lectures interesting. The material is tough, and he will tell you himself on the first day that it is the most failed class in college. He really wants his students to succeed and he really cares. Go to his office hours and he will give you all the help you need!
Cool guy, but the class was super easy. Does not really challenge you on the exams like others keep saying. If you want an easy grade take him like everyone else and if not take someone else if you really want to REALLY learn the material.
Derek is definitely one of the most amazing teachers I've ever had. He explains things very well and is accessible outside of class. Even though I don't need calculus 3 I want to take it with him because calculus 1 was so much fun. You really have to spend a lot of time of the homework. The practice exams help. Go to office hours.
Amazing teacher! Great lectures that are easy to understand. Covers the concepts well with many relevant examples. He's very obviously enthused about his subject. Will help set up homework problems that are tricky, and sets up convenient office hours. Also willing to meet outside office hours and very easy to contact.
I have taken calc 1&2 w/ him. he's an absolutley amazing professor & person in general. If i could take him for all of my math classes i would! he explains everything so well! He has a love for math & you can tell just by his teaching style! this guy is a stud when it comes to math! The calc finals are difficult.. just saying but he really is great
What an outstanding professor. Calc. I and II are very hard classes, but when you have a professor who is truly loves the material and cares about his students, it will be the best that it can be. He moves quickly through material, but does tons of examples in class, so the notes you take are always helpful when doing homework later that night.
Derek is the best Math professor I've had at UNM. His lectures are clear and thorough. I rarely had to read the textbook, usually his lectures gave me all the information I needed. Tests are very fair as long as you've studied. Homework almost every week but not an excessive amount of problems.
Dr. Martinez is one of the few professors that I have encountered at UNM that truly inspires students. He really puts an effort in drawing circles and his lectures, the examples he gives are funny and amazing at the same time. How much effort you put into his class is how much you'll get out. Also, you'll learn some pretty cool math tricks.
This class was a bit confusing at first, but Dr. Martinez will try and break down the material as much as possible. There was a quiz like every other week, but he let you work in groups or use your notes. The exams were made up of everything one has seen in lecture, so go to class, or in the homework.
Great teacher, Teaches the topic clearly. Makes it so easy but while doing on your own can be hard.
Derek really cares about his students and always makes sure they understand what he is teaching. His lectures are easy to follow and comprehend and if the material is difficult to understand then he will repeat himself with no problem. Best math professor at UNM.
No extra credit; no negotiations; his way or the highway; doesn't explain questions on exam well, (i.e., find x by using y+xz: doesn't do that) you have to read his mind. No formula sheets because "we don't use formula sheets in our math department". No hints on the exams. Does not take criticism well.
2nd class I've taken with Derek. He is so passionate about what he teaches, and makes you work an appropriate amount. His test questions are always out of the HW and from lectures. Be sure to take good notes during class, as it will make your live 100X easier when you're doing the homework later that night. Derek has a true passion for math.
I had Dr. Martinez for Calc 1,2, and 3. He truly cares about the students and is very passionate about what he does. Expect to work hard but in doing so, you will learn A LOT!
His lectures are amazing and you can always talk to him and ask him questions. I only take his sections for critical MATH classes.
If you want a fair/amazing teacher that can augment your math skills; I bring great tidings. This teacher is fun, energetic, and helps students surmount some of the toughest math classes. His lectures are very eloquent! If you need a portent to take this teacher, here it is. With Derek as your teacher, math doesn't stand a chance!
This teacher is absolutely amazing and inspiring! At first I was afraid to approach him during office hours but once I got over that I was not disappointed! He is not only passionate about the subject matter but also extremely helpful and does not talk over your head. His lectures themselves are also understandable. 100/10 would recommend!
I took Math 314 during Fall 2018. I found him awesome, funny, and one of the best math teacher at UNM. Hes very passionate about teaching, and if you need help hes there.
The lectures are a little fast-paced with many examples. But you will basically learn everything from the examples, just pay close attention. Homework is important to understand because most quizzes and in-class tests will be based on them. Would recommend this class.
Not enough time to learn in class. Learn outside, practice in lectures to fill in gaps/ask pressing ques. and you will be good. Use Professor Leonard to learn on Youtube as he follows textbook perfectly. Derek rounds grades at end. 3 tests, second is the hardest. Don't fall behind on HW. Come into lectures prepared as problems are similar on test.
Derek is entertaining in class and his notes are pretty structured which makes them easier to understand. Of course it is somewhat difficult-- you are taking calc 3! Overall, he is the one of best mathematics professors I've had.
Derek is by far the best professor I have had. He really tries to structure the classes in a way that all his students can be successful. If you need outside help, he is almost excited to do so. His classes never leave you feeling tired, but excited about math! you. He doesn't do busy work, which means all you put into it is meaningful.
Derek cares about the student's success and them being able to understand the materials. The class is based on homework, recitation quizzes, three exams, one the final cumulative exam. No exam is dropped, but the exams are straightforward and doing the homework and quizzes will help. He always tries to communicate with students outside of class.
There are 3 exams and a final which make up the vast majority of the grade, meaning it is crucial to do well on them. With Derek as your professor, he will give you lots of in-class practice which will help you know exactly what is expected. The homework is more difficult than the exams.
Derek is my favorite professor/teacher I have ever had. He is very flexible with his teaching style and is neat with his examples. He gets to know students and genuinely cares about bis students. Overall an awesome person and professor.
Love Derek Martinez! Calc 3 is difficult subject matter for sure, but Derek is a straightforward professor with a great personality. Would recommend him to anyone.
Derek is so good at teaching calc III, his lectures are very thought out and clear. There is a good amount of homework but it is manageable and the same questions pop up on the quizzes. If there is something you didn't understand in the lecture he's happy to go over it more in office hours or after class. Overall he really cares about his students.
He is a humorous and inspirational teacher made Calculus class become funny. When COVID-19 forced classes to go online, he quickly revises the syllabus and produced instruction videos for tutoring besides giving unlimited attempts for homework and test submission.
Derek is hands down the best Math teacher I've ever had. His reaching is clear and easily understandable, and if you are still struggling he will always make himself available to help you. I really hated math and after taking Derek's Calc class I am actually considering double majoring with mathematics. If you have the chance PLEASE take Derek.
Calc 3 was an example of the material being inherently boring, but Derek being an absolute beast! Derek really has the knack to dumb down insane math concepts to people like me. There were weekly quizzes in recitation, but due to the online pandemic sitch, they were pretty darn hard. The exams were fair, but the final was a killer! Derek rules!!
Calc-3 is not terribly hard. Derek is very clear in his lectures and his sample problems are easy to understand. Exams were moderate to tough but the final was easy. The 3 exams had 4 questions each and the final had 8 questions. Homework was online (MyMathLab), quizzes difficult (TAs play their part). Overall a solid instructor. Curves at the end
Derek was a phenomenal Calculus professor. His lectures were very thorough and he made himself very available to help with homework problems and other questions. Tests and quizzes were mostly made up of class/homework examples. Derek made class interesting and fun. He is definitely among UNM's best.
If anyone can teach me calculus, it would be this professor. His lectures are excellent and very easy to follow. He is very willing to help you out if you ever feel like you are falling behind, and just overall really cares for his students. The tests don't contain any surprise questions; if you understand the material you will do well on them.
An amazing lecturer, took him for Calculus 2 (arguably the most difficult of the 3)as well and makes difficult concepts easy to understand.
He makes calculus really easy to understand and makes sure everyone is understanding what is going on and taking the time everyone needs
Derek has to be one of the better professors or teachers that I have ever had. He gives great lectures on the topics and is not afraid to answer questions and take extra time to help out those who are struggling. Derek not only makes Calc I easier but honestly really enjoyable. Easily my favorite class this semester and never thought I'd love Calc.
Derek is hands down the best prof I've ever had. He is smart and engaging and makes the material very easy to understand. He clearly cares about students' understanding and is very approachable if you have questions. He's overall a cool guy, wears chacos everyday, plays guitar in class, goes backpacking on weekends, and is so excited to teach math!
This is the single greatest math professor I've ever had. Constantly checks to make sure students have a solid understanding of math concepts, provides ample oppotunities for grades, very available and willing to assist you if you're having trouble, and the list goes on. GET THIS MAN AS YOUR CALC PROFESSOR!
Calculus is a subject I have generally struggled with, but Derek teaches the material in a way that is easy to grasp. He always comes into class with an upbeat attitude and doesn't shy away from a good calculus joke. Tests and quizzes are very straightforward and follow the material learned in class.
I have taken Derek for Calc 1512 and now 1522, and let me just say Calculus 2 is a very difficult course even with Derek Martinez. He is the BEST professor around and he made calculus more than just simple numbers and letters, everything we did made sense and he shows proofs and even can provide real world examples of everything. Take him!!
I had this professor for Calc 1 - Calc 3, set up class with online and written homework, recitation quizzes, and 3 tests and a final. All the exams directly relate to problems gone over in class and homework.
Took Calc 1 and 2 with Professor Martinez, and he's honestly one of the best professors out there. Great teacher, wants you to succeed. The material is hard, but he makes it really accessible and is happy when people ask questions! Always easy to reach out to for help. Test questions are directly pulled from the lectures and homework.
TAKE HIS CLASS! He teaches high level math classes, so they are bound to be hard no matter the professor, but he makes it so much simpler and easy to understand. He is genuinely kind and cares about his students, he even knows all our names.
absolutely incredible, take Derek in anything if you can
Derek is the best math professor I've ever had at UNM.I've taken calc 2 twice before and never understood anything so i pretty much entered his class with zero knowledge and he makes everything so much easier to understand. I did go to the calc table(especially with TA Daniel) often so that was also a big help.
Best of all the professors I have studied with
If you have the chance to take a math course with Derek, I highly recommend you do so. I would rather have a 7 am with Derek than an 11 am with someone else.
This guy rocks. Absolutely take him if he's available. However, UNM gives us WAY too much homework for these math classes in my opinion. I mean it's a 15 page packet a week that takes like 7 or 8 hours to complete. Not good if you have other vigorous homework-heavy classes. Also, study for the lab sections. Random quizzes are 10% of your grade!
Derek is great and everybody says he's great. He's just great!
Derek Martinez is the best mathematics professor at UNM. His lectures are packed with useful explanations and examples. Taking any calculus at UNM will involve a lot of work and a padded syllabus, but no one is better at explaining, caring, and making things interesting as Derek. If there is any doubt, trust me. TAKE DEREK'S CLASS!
He made me enjoy Calc 2. All of his lectures were very enjoyable and easy to follow. He has a great way of teaching where it makes you want to learn about the topic. Attendance isn't mandatory but you should probabaly go since calc 2 is a difficult subject.
Dereck is one of my favorites professors, I took calculus I & II with him and it was such a great experience, he literally explains everything so well that you can understand in your own way 10/10 professor!
Derek is a great professor, I ended up not passing his class but that was my own fault. He is very easy to talk to so don't be afraid to go to office hours or talk to him after class. If you find yourself confused or not understanding something MAKE SURE you ask him because he can help!!! His class is easy if you ask questions.
I took calc 2 from him and it was the best math class I've ever taken. He is incredibly invested in his students and works very hard to make sure we are understanding both the material and how it applies to our homework. I am planning on taking every future math class with him.
Derek does a great job at teaching an extremely difficult subject. While the homework is usually harder than his in-class examples, Derek is always so eager to help and is truly passionate about what he teaches.
Derek was amazing at clarifying so many things that were confusing to me. If you can, take his class! He is great at explaining things and is so helpful when you get stuck on something. He is also very accessible outside of class and goes the extra mile to make sure you understand it. (ALWAYS REACH OUT IF YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND SOMETHING!!)
Great at providing help and making things seem very simple in a class that could be very difficult for some. Also has a great personality and lectures are easy to follow.
He is absolutely incredible. He is the greatest teacher I have ever had in the 20 years I have been alive. I took him for calc II and III, and I would do it all over again.
Derek Martinez does an excellent job explaining his material. Even if he does not do the best job explaining a topic the first time, it is guaranteed that he will go over it a couple more times to make it clear. He wants his students to succeed and enjoy math. I would highly recommend taking one of his classes if you have the chance.
I don't think I even need to leave another 5-star review here. He's the best professor I've ever had. He loves the subject and it's a breath of fresh air, especially with a widely disliked subject.
Derek is AWESOME! This is my second time taking calc 3 and he makes it fun and enjoyable to learn. He always makes sure everyone is on the same page and exams are just like the study guide. I also like the way he grades hw (grades a couple problems out of the whole packet). Absolutely recommend taking his class!
Lectures were so fun and interesting. Exams were just like the lecture/homework. Really great teacher, 10/10 recommend.
Great professor.
TA can make the grading a bit more harsh for homework and quizzes, but Derek is a generous grader of exams. Lectures are fun and actually informational. Interesting person outside of class, and tries to actually form connections. Great teacher, highly recommend.
I cannot recommend him enough! Derek is truly one of the best professors I have ever had, he is clearly passionate about what he teaches and he loves helping the students learn. I took Calc 2 and 3 with him and they were the best! I'm very grateful to have had him as my professor.
Incredible guy, easy grader, wants you to succeed more than anything. My only gripe is that he kinda slacked towards the end of the semester, cancelled a lot of classes which isn't great for math. gonna have to relearn some important topics on my own but if you dont care about that as much as for the grade, fight for your life to get this guy
Derek is such a great teacher especially for calc II. This class was hard but he made it worth it. I scored really low on the final exam and he dropped it from my total grade. My only problem is that he'll give grades of C- when the math website says minimum passing grade (C) is 70% but that's just me being nitpicky.
Calc is a tough subject, but Derek has a way to simplify everything and provide confidence. His grading is extremely easy, but beware you may need to watch some videos outside of class to ensure you understand material in full depth to keep up with the homework. He introduces fundamental concepts but relies on you to fill in the gaps.
He's a good lecturer and a really nice guy. He got sick during our semester and kept cancelling class. A few times, he didn't show up to class and didn't notify us he wouldn't be there until hours after class ended. It took him a few weeks after class started to give us access to the Canvas page. He lost one of my exams.
Derek is really an awesome professor! He is very passionate about math and very knowledgeable. He is super laid back, connects the material to real-world examples, and cares deeply for his students. He has office hours several days a week for an hour or so and is willing to take zoom calls if you need help. He clearly loves teaching.
