Fairly interesting and funny prof. I especially like the Calvin and Hobbes connections with biochem.
Ok so Biochem is a hard course in general - but he is actually a really funny and down to earth prof. I didn't really like his teaching style - but I think it was because of the material he had to teach us. He really tried - and our whole class thought he was extremely funny (you wouldn't think so by looking at him!)
Great prof, made the class really fun with his Calvin and Hobbes comics, sense of humour, and enthusiasm.
Overall probably my favourite prof of the bio280a trio. I mean the whole kiano reeves picture in the mitochondria was pretty funny and he usually cracks a few jokes.

Best professor i have ever had
Best prof ever! So funny, great lectures and very understandable lecture slides! He really cares about his students and keeps the attention of all 800 students for the full lectures! Come on - any prof that sings about histones deserves a great review!
His eccentric personality makes the class so much more interesting. His lectures and notes are awesome too! Exams are tough, but his questions were the easiest. He made a dull subject a little more interesting. The textbook is not needed, so don't buy it
THE MAN. Class was so much fun. Krebs on a motorcyle (Krebs cycle!) come on...gotta love it.
Great prof.
Greatest Prof in the world
He makes his lectures very funny and interesting despite the dry material... and he's sexy!!
Best biochem proffessor, by far! Explains concepts concepts clearly and maintains some level of interest, despite the fact that it is the most boring material ever.
FAAAAANNNNNNTASSSSSTIC
Awesome professor! definetly enthusiatic about the material and explains everything really well. He also used to prepare entertaining little tidbits at the end of some classes to keep us interested. I have to admit, a little part of me died when he left and Brandl came.
Great prof! Fair exams, just memorize the stuff and you will be ok
Good prof, fair exams - just do your work and get help when needed.
Best prof ever!
best prof thus far! passionate and amazing.
Best of the three biochem profs. He tries to make the material he teaches as interesting as possible, and is very clear in doing so. Loved the histones song :) And him dressing up as Gandolf for Halloween. Great prof and a great man!
Excellent prof
This man is a boss! He keeps class interesting and is fair although a thorough understanding of stuff is necessary. If MTV is reading this get this guy for the next beauty and the geek!
This guy is phenomenal! Out of my university career this guy is the best!
In reference to an earlier comment "DR. M is a boss". He rocks your biochem lectures so hard every lecture. Whereas the other two will often put you to sleep, he keeps you on the edge of your seat. His tests are actually entertaining at times. Loved it.
Amazing, knows his stuff! Keeps class interesting with comics songs about histones and DNA repair mechs. Exams are challenging but if you commit the time they should be no problem. Loved the material, though most think its dry. Much better than the other 2 in the trio. Competes with Workentin as my fav prof so far.
Very good prof
SOOOO FUNNNYYYYY!!! he is my fav prof so far besides maybe D. Maxwell...but he uses the best analogies, funniest jokes and his slides are well organized. awesome awesome awesome
What a guy. His classes are incredibly interesting, and he does a great job of keeping the material fresh with wacky analogies, interesting clicker questions, and jokes about Nobel Prize winners. His material is tough, but as long as you attend class, do the readings and grab the lecture notes+past exams, you'll be fine. Watch the funny WebCT vids.
AMAZING prof. My favourite so far out of my whole UWO experience! He is hilarious, and there is even a facebook page devoted to him (check it out!). His webCT vids are so funny, and he keeps me wanting to come to class. He can talk a bit fast sometimes... but other than that, he's awesome!
Very funny and organized! Sings songs and tells jokes. Material isn't easy but he keeps it lighthearted.
Amazing Prof. UWO has a really good roster of biochem profs...Maxwell from first year to McLachlin second year... can't wait to see what's in store for year three biochemistry (specifically bioenergietics)! Get ready though, after him Brandle is no joker :(
3 words: Yabba Dabba Doo!!!
Thus far he is probably one of the best profs i have had at western. He explains the material clearly, is very knowledgeable when answering questions, and not to mention he brings a light hearted enthusiastic attitude towards teaching. And make sure you go to this class before Halloween...IF YOU DONT BRING YOUR STUDENT CARD, THEN YOU SHALL NOT PASS
HE IS AMAZING!!!!!
As with everyone else - AMAZING PROFF!!! my favorite, hands down. dont want to ruin too much but before your MIDTERM, BRING A CAMERA - youll thank me later
Mclachlin is easily the coolest professor at Western! His lectures were always the best part of my day; they were super organized, easy to follow, and extremely entertaining! It's cool that he shares his knowledge bout the history of science and noble prize winners. He dedicates so much to his students, making every lecture worth attending twice!!
Hands-down best prof I've ever had at Western! Comes very well prepared to his lectures and always makes an effort to make his lectures interesting and funny. Explains concepts very well and has fair tests.
Best professor ever. Fair exam questions if you study the lecture slides. Very enthusiastic in his lectures. :) Keep it up, you rock!!!!
Best biochem prof ever. When you sang in class i was serenaded forever. He is a great prof fair and genuinely cares.
So engaging and funny, he actually makes you want to come to lecture. Love him!
seriously needs 10000 teaching awards! he is outstanding! he truly cares about teaching and his students
<3 Best prof ever hands down
By far the best prof I've ever had at university, if not the best teacher I've ever had. He made me love his material, his family, and his teaching- especially when he was Gandalf. I don't think is a person out there who could have a bad word against this man :)
One of my favourite teachers. Keeps things interesting and explains things well. "We'll repair for you".. awesome.
The amount of effort he puts into teaching the course is insane. Sings songs, dresses up as a wizard, makes rap videos... answers forum questions in less than a day! And best of all, he's not condescending and rude, unlike the first year bio prof
Good comments here come from second years in a class of 1000. In reality in a one-on-one setting he is bad. Stuck up and unhelpful, not to mention the fact that he is ONLY a teacher. Meaning he should be answering questions immediately, he doesn't run a lab like other professors. Just because someone is likeable doesn't make them a good teacher
he's so funny and smart
he was great, really clear and interesting
His lectures are amazing, his tests are hard and his assignments are fair. He makes up songs and sings them to you about biochemistry, dresses up and acts the part for Halloween and is just generally so nice and legitimately loves biochem, which makes a hard course that much more bearable.
He's a pretty down to Earth professor, his powerpoints were very clear and he clearly puts a lot of effort into helping students understand. He pulls a few neat stunts such as singing in class and dressing up as Gandolf which adds some spark to the lecture hall setting.
Really clear, fun lectures. Exam questions are fair.
Very interesting and clear. Nice guy, very down to earth. Would highly recommend for any course and to go to for help.
McLachlin records his lectures so you don't have to go to class, but he's an amazing prof and has a pretty good (dorky) sense of humor. I loved him, one of the best profs you'll have in second year
Great guy
Great guy, fun, good at explaining the conceps
Amazing prof
Hilarious prof, super clear explanations of concepts as well as what you're expected to know for the exams. Also records his lectures if you don't get a chance to go. Overall one of my fave profs I've had at western so far.
Great prof, really funny and engaging in lecture
Makes biochem interesting and actually makes you want to go to class
Great prof, he just is basically everything you want in a prof
I enjoyed being in the class, great funny guy.
Really good prof, makes boring topics quite interesting
Super fair prof! Really great at explaining concepts and makes the class very interesting!
Love him! Explains concepts very well, his lectures are very organized, and he's really helpful with answering questions on the online forum. Lectures are enjoyable and not boring :)
He explained the concepts well, and gave many alternatives to understand his material if you didn't get the lectures (online and in the course pack). Lectures are very fun, I really enjoy going to his lectures because he makes the topic more interesting.
One of my favourite profs. He makes lectures are pretty interesting. Gives a lot of analogies that help you understand the content better. He's overall just a great lecturer, explains concepts really well, and tells you what to focus on for exams. His part on the exam is very fair.
Excellent prof, great lectures. Makes really boring stuff way more interesting.
I'm really only taking this course because I have to, but I would have to say he was one of the best profs I've had throughout my three years so far at western. Entertaining lectures and puts concepts into perspectives to help you understand. Sad that his section is almost done
Such a funny, helpful knowledgeable prof! Very inspiring and his lectures are great!
His questions on the midterm were fair, he's interesting in lectures and keeps you awake for sure! He's passionate about what he teaches and you can tell he cares about teaching students. Great prof!
Very funny prof
Just an awesome human being, and it shows in his teaching.
Hilarious and knows how to communicate with students. Lectures are entertaining, worthwhile, and easy to listen to. Good speaker who reiterates and emphasizes material.
Hilarious, committed to making sure everyone understands the material, always there to help, clear and organized lectures. His exam questions were very fair, he's definitely not out to get you.
He's honestly just the best prof all around. Super nice guy, makes lectures fun and participatory, really great at explaining harder concepts using analogies that everyone can understand, etc. He tapes his lectures so class isn't mandatory, but I suggest going if you can. He's the prof that gets you through this course with a decent mark.
Gandalf the Grey is one of those profs that tells you exactly what you need to learn, is funny, and is just an overall bae. If you can get him and his awesomeness, do it.
Amazing prof. Likes to sing and crack jokes in class. Really makes up for the other 2 horrible profs for this course.
Doc McLach deserves a Nobel for being an outstanding professor.
LITERALLY THE BEST PROF EVER!!! He makes biochem so much fun and definitely worth showing up to class! never a dull moment with this guy. Makes the best analogies, you'll definitely understand concepts when studying after lecture.
amazing prof, makes biochemistry interesting! really really cares about your learning and wants to be there for you. exam questions are very fair, he explicitly states what he will and wont test you on and follows it to a t. great prof.
Dr. McLachlin is a well-respected individual and I do really hope that one of his students get Noble Prize and mention his name as an inspirational factor.
LOVE HIM. You can tell he really cares about his students and tries hard to explain things well and make class fun. His analogies are helpful in clarifying difficult concepts and he's hilarious. Fav prof of the year by far!!
best professor I've had so far. makes up for the bs you experience from the other two profs (meakin and brandl). The thing I respect the most was that he took the time to make videos/song parodies to help you better understand and to make you laugh, showing how much he cares and wants you to succeed.
Amazing professor for biochemistry. He presents the information clearly and makes the topics interesting and fun.
Absolutely phenomenal. Could not say enough good things about him. His passion and effort are unmatched by any professor I've ever had. You should feel good about taking one of his courses
Incredible prof. He goes out of his way to make things easier for students. Pay attention to his "Learning Objectives." Focus on those and you'll ace the exam. Also the forums! McLachlin answers EVERY forum question to the best of his ability. Finally do the textbook questions. There's always one or two questions copy/pasted from the book onto exam
You can tell he really loves what he teaches, and it makes you love what he teaches! He always makes class fun and interactive.
Great professor and very passionate about teaching! You can tell just how much he loves the subject he teaches and he cares a lot about students. By far one of the funniest and kindest profs I've had. Exam questions were really fair too!
Dr. MacLachlin is an excellent professor. His lectures are really lively, and they will brighten your day. He loves teaching. He speaks fast, but posts his lecture recordings. Don't be intimidated for Biochem 2280 it, sounds hard but if you work for it its a great course!
Took his course 3-4 years ago and he was one of the best. Easy midterm if you leave enough time to study for it (but he also needs to be reminded to not be condescending to students towards the end of the course... we were taking 5 courses)
DocMcLach is my FAVOURITE professor ever. He has tons of material based songs, he's enthusiastic and encourages interaction in class. He's so easy to talk to and he is very thorough when he teaches and uses really good analogies. His exam material was completely fair (unlike the other profs) and overall I can't see anyone hating him ever.
Even though this course can be a bit dry sometimes with so much to know and memorize, Dr. Derek McLachlin really made his lectures interesting and memorable by adding stories. For example, he uses a character "Saurabh" to try and relay key concepts. He is good at explaining processes (ex. ETC) and it's recorded, so you can rewatch the lectures.
McLachlin was the best part if Biochem and made the course bearable. His songs are also very well made. He has the voice of an angel.
Dry course with a lot of material to memorize, but this guy made it interesting, fun and easy to learn! Seriously the best biochem prof. Gets straight to the point and explains everything clearly! Tells you what you need to know and what you don't need to know for exams so that takes a lot of weight off your shoulders when studying.
Great prof! He made me actually look forward to going to class. He always starts class with a comic, sometimes shares personal (relevant) anecdotes to make the material interesting, and he even dressed up for Halloween. Just really engaging and good-natured. Most importantly, he presents material clearly, and posts slides and audio recordings.
This guy should be winning teaching awards
One of the best profs I've had. He is great at explaining concepts, pulled of world class singing performances and had fair exams.
love Derek as a prof but this course is A LOT. The content/labs are fine, but there are tons of assignments, and these you really can't start the night before. Even with a lot of time spent on it, you're graded to mediocrity. Pretty tough to do well especially at the beginning. Luckily, most of the stuff that you do bad on won't be worth that much.
Worst prof Ive had yet.
Worst prof
Doesnt care and doesnt listen to you
McLachlin is funny and his songs that he writes and sings are really unique. I enjoyed the Calvin and Hobbes comic at the beginning of every lecture. The final exam was fair, although some questions were really tricky. No need to read the textbook, just understand the lectures.
I do terrible in every chemistry related class but Dr. Mclachlin's lectures really helped me grasp the content and get a very high mark on the final to finish with a B+. It was a difficult course and he doesn't make it easy but he is a great instructor and if you work and stay up to date you hard you can easily get an A.
His songs are the best part of this course. The final exam had some really difficult questions on it but I felt prepared after using the Wize practice questions.
great guy. lectures were clear and to the point. quiz questions are hard but the exam questions felt a lot easier and fairer as a result.
Gives great lectures on biochem, which was honestly a very interesting course. Great feedback on forums as well. Quiz questions were probably the toughest out of the three profs that instructed biochem 2280 but the test questions were good.
I find Dr. McLachlin to be probably the best teacher for biochem. The information he presents is clear. Not only this, but I found he responds very quickly and is compassionate. He was very understanding when I needed to move one of my tests.
This prof doesn't seem to like students ask him questions even when its relevant to lecture material. Responds to students concerns in a condescending and disrespectful manner. Lectures are ok but can be vague at times. Lectures alone won't suffice to ace through the quizzes (you really need to read the textbook). Overall, bad first impression.
The course is a lot of material but he explained it very well in lectures. They were also very lighthearted which was good for while you panic about possibly failing the course. The exams are easy if you do lots of practice questions. He was very approachable and understanding about exam mistakes/rearrangements.
Boring lectures with useless iclicker questions. Prof McLachlin tries to be funny but fails hard. Also he wastes lecture time by rambling on and on about Nobel Prizes (who cares?) Ppt slides are derived straight from the topic notes. I don't even think it's necessary to attend lectures. Also, his professionalism towards students is questionable.
He was the best prof out of the 3 for biochem. made lectures funny and tried to give pop culture references. very clear about what he was going to test on.
Cannot understand the hype with Dr. McLachlin. He is not just average he is below average. I find it hard to follow his thinking when trying to take notes in lecture. Apparently, he doesn't like explaining things twice and gets rly annoyed when u ask him again. Also, this guy has no sympathy whatsoever. Lies to students about midterm difficulty.
Yeah, Derek Mclachlin definitely lost his spark since COVID came along. I remember him being more enthusiastic in lecture. now, you can tell that he doesn't wanna teach anymore and just wanna retire. He skipped some really important info during lecture and made mistakes in his new slides. Also, it takes him 2-3 days to respond to an urgent email.
Nope, not for me at all. Absolutely despised his teaching style. He only covers basic content and doesn't care to elaborate on actual understanding. Which explains why the midterm average was lower this year. Very rude with emailing, somebody should teach this guy about email etiquette.
Mclachlin is a very fair professor. His lectures are informative and in depth and give you the information needed to do well on assignments (google helps as well). He expects very high quality work and marks with high expectations so slacking won't work. He gave really helpful feedback after the group presentation.
Lectures were clear and easy to follow, very easy to know what would be on the exams. Exams are easy if you do practice questions and pay attention to lectures, could honestly be crammed before exams. Very entertaining and understanding of student circumstances.
Great prof. Loved his songs. Liked his teaching style even better
Loved this prof. So funny and made lectures interesting. Hard material (lots of memorization), but he explains it well if you can write decent notes in lecture. His content on the midterm (metabolism stuff) was harder than his content on the final (DNA stuff). I would take any of his courses even if I hate the material. Best prof.
Top G professor for biochem, nothing else to say
I LOVE U DEREK MCLACHLIN I WILL MENTION U WHEN I WIN THE NOBEL PRIZE I PROMISE. top tier prof at western, rivals denis maxwell. first person ever to properly explain metabolism to me. his lectures are amazing, so funny. go to all lecs or risk missing a song cover you'll never recover from!
This man is so funny and I love his Taylor Swift covers. His lectures are clear and to-the-point. This course is content-heavy but he explains it very well. His test questions are more than fair and he provides so many resources and study materials. You can tell he wants students to be successful.
Made me fall in love w biochem. awesome professor who always keeps you focused n engaged like wow amazing for my adhd. very random n very entertaining. lectures are genuinely interesting and makes you wanna learn about it rather ugh i just wanna get it over with. The way he explains concepts is awesome, and he makes sure his content isn't tricky.
He always makes lectures fun and you're never bored. Even though his section of concepts were harder than the rest, he made it really easy to follow and understand. One of the best profs I've had!
One of the best professors Western has to offer. Seriously, he is so well-spoken his words and the concepts would automatically translate in my brain. Very engaging lectures as well (especially if you like singing and nobel prizes lol). He made biochem so interesting as you can tell he has a strong passion towards teaching. Well done!!
After 4 years of university, McLachlin is my favourite professor. Engaging lectures, clear grading criteria in the exams, and very entertaining with his little songs he does. You'll have a great time going to his lectures, the course is very Anki-heavy with MC exams but with a good amount of dedication a 90+ is very attainable!
This guy taught the majority of the course and he is the goat. Funny as hell too and also he actually responds to emails which is excruciatingly rare in science.
Great professor, hilarious and clearly cares about the students
Great prof! His lectures were interesting and easy to follow, and he made classes super fun! I wish more profs were like him, learning is so much easier with him as a prof! Also an amazing singer, his song on ATP is such a bop
I'm now a third year med sci student and took this class last year. Derek Mclachlin is my third favourite prof of all time at Western. He is fun and really nice but I also like that he won't tolerate shit from students. Explains material well and although exams are hard they are very fair.
Absolutely the best professor with THE best lecture I have ever been to in all of my years at Western University. His lecture on creatine was so captivating that I actually had dreams about creatine. I learn beyond the classroom. Moreover, having T Swift at the end made my life considerably better.
Definitely one of the best profs I've had so far. Keeps things entertaining and explains concepts pretty well. I found that none of his midterm questions were trick questions and were very similar to the quizzes.
McLachlin's lectures were amazing and he has a talent for explaining difficult topics in a way that is easy to understand. He is also incredibly funny and his lectures were so valuable and enjoyable. Definitely the best prof I've had at Western so far.
such a cutie love his songs and his teaching and everything about him!
One of the best profs - funny, engaging, and makes even tough biochem content easy to follow. Definitely attend all lectures, they're a blast! Unstuck study was super helpful for practice too.
He explained many things that didn't make sense and were unnecessary for us to know. He talked a lot about the Nobel Prize, which we didn't find relevant. His exams are extremely tough, especially the midterm, and his way of writing exam questions is very unclear.
Best prof ever! The lectures are very clear and give lots of practice problems to prepare us. Love his songs :)
one of the best prof at western. He cares about what he teaches, and made me like the subject even tho I hated it before.
Honestly one of my favourite professors of all time. I love listening to his lectures, very easy to understand and his tests are very fair. Would definitely recommend him. I really enjoyed his singing lol.
probably one of my fav profs at Western so far. I have nothing bad to say, he's funny, great at singing, and just an overall down to earth and great guy. I would genuinely retake this course for fun just to attend his lectures again.
In another life Derek McLachlin was a singer, but in this one he is the best biochem prof at Western. Course is still hard as hell but admittedly what he tested was fair. Show up to all lectures though, not because its essential to do well but bc you might miss a singing performance, you dont wanna be the person to miss a McLachlin singalong
his slides are boring af but he's a cutie pie. I found the content to be really hard but the tests were pretty fair
Great prof with very clear lectures—you know exactly what to expect on exams. Well-run course and a genuinely nice guy. Only downside is exams are written by multiple profs, so consistency isn't perfect. Also… still sad about not getting the ketone booster drinks.
Amazing prof and very passionate about his course. Keeps you interested during lecture.
