Very clear. He explains every concept very well. Did lots of examples as well as proofs so you could understand the general concepts behind the math. He includes random slightly sarcastic analogies and metaphors to help you relate the math to real life and understand it on a deeper level.
Lectures were clear and easy to follow. Super funny.
I took math 104 this summer with Derek, and it was an amazing experience. I hadn't touched math within last 6 years and my concepts were really rusty. But, after going to his lectures everyday, I was able to catch up on everything very easily. His exams were straight off from his lecture material. I totally recommend this prof.
Lectures are all very organized and well planned! He is an amazing prof and he really knows his stuff. He wants to see you succeed and really understand the material. We need more profs just like him! Would take another class from him in a heartbeat! Keep doing what you are doing Derek
Really amazing prof. But sometimes he just talks too much and you will be bored out.
Awesome prof . Love his way of teaching , super easy and fun . I enjoyed the class and the exams are super easy . I would take it again in a heartbeat .
Good, clear lectures. Really heavy on the metaphors which can lead into rambling which can cause you to lose attention. But he's good about his pacing so you shouldn't get too lost. Also, while I personally didn't get a one-on-one session with him I did see someone and he seemed patient and clear with them.
Dr. Postnikoff is an awesome prof. This class is basically a review of calculus but he makes it seem even easier than it was in high school. Explains concepts thoroughly and gives great examples that guide you through the exams and weekly assignments. Would definitely recommend to any first year students or any one who has struggled with math!
Dr. Postnikoff is awesome. I've heard that this course is essentially a review of Calculus 30. He is fairly fast-paced, but he explains everything thoroughly enough that even though I had not previously taken calculus, it made sense. He also uses analogies that keep the class interesting and funny. Great prof.
Dr. Postnikoff is a great prof! He explains the lecture content clearly and makes it understandable for everyone, no matter what their mathematical background is. He has a great sense of humour which livens the class up and he also gives great examples which help out a lot for the exams. I would take another class with him in a heartbeat!
He is a great prof ! I hadn't taken calculus 30 so i was worried for this class. Derek is very informative and clearly loves math ! He posts his lectures online and is very fast at replying to emails and helping. He has a great sense of humour and makes the class interesting. Exams are fair and there are no trick questions. I would recommend!
Dr. Postnikoff has been a great teacher this semester. If I had a question I would email him and he would respond to me in about a day. He explains math in a way that a student can understand. With that being said, you have to come to class to learn! I didn't really use the textbook. I would suggest just buying the online code for web assign.
He is amazing one of my favourite profs . I would recommend everyone to take his classes . very educated and highly respected by students .He sees students as gunman beings which makes it even better .If u email him about a question he will answer in less than an hour .
One of my favorite profs the last term! I loved him for math!!
Great prof! If you can take your math classes from him, do so. He makes everything make sense and points out common errors, which is quite helpful. Lectures were easy to follow and take notes from, plus he provided lecture recordings so you could go back and review. Highly recommend.
Its obvious he loves teaching math, and wants you to do well. He goes fast, but only because theres quite a bit to cover in the class. If you ask him a question after class, hell be sure to answer it and make sure you fully understand the concept. If you took Calc in high school, 104 with him will be a cake walk. Great proff
I liked the class and the Prof. He explains the material very well. However, he doesn't post any lecture slides, so you better not skip lectures. I also liked that he was quite open to new and not trivial ways of solving problems. The homework for this course is quite challenging, but it gets you ready for the exams.
I loved this guy as a prof. I was really worried about math since it isn't my best subject, but it ended up being my highest mark. For 104 he posted his recorded lectures on PAWS. Midterms were very straight forward. Final was even better. Loved his sense of humour. Gave a bit of extra credit near the end. Assignments were frequent, but fairly easy
Derek is bae. He made math easy to understand and tried to make the lectures interesting. He's heavy on the notes but it's so worth it. Take as many classes as you can with him, you'll get insanely good marks.
Really good teacher, covered the material perfectly and made things very understandable
He's extremely funny and knows the material very well. More importantly though he knows how to make you understand the content. GREAT PROF!
Best math teacher I've ever had. He's very patient and makes sure everyone understands before moving on to another topic. Honestly, this man is a legend.
Very good prof! He tries to explain the concepts in a variety of ways, and shows the work needed when doing examples. Gives examples similar to those that might appear on the exams. Dedicated in teaching the class. Makes actual, funny, impromptu puns during lectures! Lecture heavy. You would want to do lots of practice questions.
Awesome prof. Very funny and sincere. You can tell he wants everyone to succeed.
You can tell he really cares that his students do well Often throws in dry humour Is available for help outside of class
Great Prof! He is really good at explaining concepts and his lectures are awesome. He is also a funny guy. His exams are very fair. Overall, the best 1st year math prof at usask. What a beauty!
Dr Postnikoff is a great prof. Calculus is not an easy subject and he gives lot of great analogies to make it easier to understand. He posts all the lectures online so if you miss class, you can easily get caught up. I usually just watched the lectures at home because the room was so crowded. A+ prof (and I'm not a big fan of math)
Derek is by far my favourite math professor! He did an absolutely wonderful job teaching calculus 3 this summer! His lectures make sense, his tests and quizzes are right on cue for what you have been learning in class, and he can actually teach you math, not just yell it at you!
Took an amazing class from him. He always made sure we understood the material and we always knew what to expect on tests. Quite funny at times and cared about everyone. Would take another class from him in a heartbeat!
Super awesome guy. Can go on about the same thing a bit too long sometimes. We got it the first time.
Derek is hands down one of the best profs I've ever had. Guy genuinely cares about his students, and has a talent for explaining everything from simple concepts to mind boggling theories in a way almost anyone can understand. 10/10 would recommend.
his tests are difficult, but if you use the study material given to you, you will get a good grade.
I would highly recommend taking high school calculus before this course because pre-calculus does not provide the background needed. Derek didn't compensate for that at all and dove straight into the content. I learnt all term from the textbook but he gives really useful practice midterms to study with.
Easy to get a great mark (high 90s) and hilarious prof to listen to. You'll actually have a good time in math class.
Derek is a good guy but there is a lot to cover when it comes to his lectures. He covers a lot of info in a short amount of time but he adds in math jokes to make it somewhat more fun. He is a prof who actually cares about how well you do in the class and will do whatever he can to make sure you pass but you also need to be prepared to work class.
Best math teacher/professor I've ever had!
Awesome prof, made difficult concepts super easy to understand with use of humor and real world examples. Can tell he really cares about his students.
Amazing prof. very easily approachable and was willing to help students outside of class. as long as you do all the webassign assignments and all the questions from the textbook very possible to get in the 90s.
Not a difficult math course if you stay on top of the weekly assignments and prepare for midterms. His tests are fair and the final exam was super easy
Great Prof overall. He doesn't post notes, but lectures are captured and available. Basically a high school calculus class. Tests aren't very long, so questions are worth a high percent. Hard examples given in class will usually appear on the midterm. He is very enthusiastic about math, and seems like an over all great guy
Postnikoff is unreal. Goes through everything in depth and had a very organized structure to his lectures. Posts lecture captures.
Honestly made math a decent experience even though I've despised it and avoided it all my life
He has tons of great advice right in the beginning of class, creates a great classroom environment and lays out his expectations. Theres no surprises when it comes to exams or assignments. He posts his lectures and makes himself available outside of class. Super nice guy, approachable and really cares about his students! Best math teacher Ive had
Super great prof! He has an interesting sense of humour, but it did make his lectures more enjoyable. He is really good at making the material easy to understand and the workload isn't too heavy - just one assignment per week! He is also very helpful and wants to see his students succeed. I would recommend you take his class.
Lectures drag on, very boring to listen too, does not explain material in detail
This prof clearly cares about how his students do but he doesn't explain anything well. He takes down the lecture casts if the attendance rate falls in the calls. You absolutely need to do textbook questions to pass this class. Do NOT let yourself fall behind because exams are multiple choice (A-J) & you do not get marks for work, just answers.
Derek is a great prof! His lectures are fairly easy to follow. Sometimes he speeds up and it gets too fast, but they're posted online to refer to later on. He explains things and takes times for questions. As long as you're showing up you'll do fine! I really enjoyed his class and would highly recommend taking a lecture from him!
Great prof. Pretty funny. His lectures are good. If you consider yourself not so great at math there's a chance you can still pass this class (not because it's easy but because Derek's good at teaching)
his online recorded lectures makes it so tempting for students to skip class. when finals are around the corner, make sure to attend his class because he tells the class something that aren't in the recording.
Derek was a great prof, he loves math and he clearly shows it. He has some whack analogies but he really does want students to pass. Lectures were sometimes really packed but not all were like that
I loved my class with Derek! Has great and hilarious metaphors to help students understand math better. Would definitely recommend taking this class right out of high school because it is just like Calc 30 and that makes it a lot easier. Also having old midterms from past years made it easy because the questions were almost always exactly the same.
Derek was a great prof. His midterms and even the final exam were easy if you took Calculus 30 in high school. I never went to the lectures and just watched the recordings and it was a piece of cake for me. He also gives old midterms for practice, which is all I used to study for the final and I found it effective. You still have to put in work.
I am not a math person so thats why this was so difficult, but I really liked his teaching style. He was very informative and really wanted you to do well.
Derek is a great math prof and prof in general. Definitely try to take a class with him. He tried to make his lectures interesting and his notes are really well organized. He records his lectures so you can watch later or rewatch before tests which I really appreciated. If you took calc 30 in high school this class will be fine.
absolutely hates seeing electronics of any kind, will call you out if he sees you on your phone; pen and paper only. lots of examples.
Funny, interesting, and he cares about math. His no phone policy really forces youto pay attention which ends up not being a problem because hes so funny and engaging. He covered all the material incredibly well and I aced the class mostly because of him. He records lectures so missing or skipping is not a problem at all and you never need the text
He's very funny and gives plenty of funny examples to help you understand topics.
Goes through material very fast, making it difficult to keep up. No electronics allowed in class.
He's a really funny guy but his downfall is the speed he goes through lectures. I found that lots of the time I had chunks in my notes because I couldn't get the notes down before he switched slides; luckily he records his lectures. He does LOTS of examples in class that pertain to each assignment and explains every concept very well.
Class contain is fairly easy. Although the class is boring, which you cannot complain too much because it's easy right? Midterms might be a bit tricky but assignments are good.
Willing to provide feedback and guidance at any time. Gives helpful tips to do well for a student that's anxious about math. Has funny math related jokes and relates the work to real world situations. Tests are worth a significant percentage but make sure you get 100% on your assignments!
He gives lots of examples and tries to bring humour into his lessons. Very helpful when asked and provides lots of resources for struggling students.
I have never met anyone more in love with math... makes us read hours worth of textbooks and expects us to read a novel that is entirely about math and why it is amazing. If you are passionate about math, then this is the class for you. Otherwise, dont.
Definitely one of the better profs I've had, he was a real talent of making the material understandable and does his best to give applicable examples. Do the assignments to 100% and you'll get a great mark!
Lecture capture was a blessing. Ngl I took Calc in high school so this class was a breeze for me but the class averages were usually 50%. Assignments are an easy 100 because he gives 100 attempts on each question. Tests are ONLY marked on answers (multiple choice), which I understand given the class size, but on little mistake loses you huge marks
Derek Postnikoff is one of the best professor I had this previous term. He's accessible outside of class. Lecture capture is provided but it is recommended to attend the lectures. He does not do any surprises on his exams and will remove concepts if they are not covered in lecture beforehand. Do the textbook questions because it will help you.
He really invests in this class and values our education. He had us meet with him outside of class instead of a final in december (year long class) and gave us feedback as well as asked us how we were doing! I have never had a better professor.
Makes the class a lot harder than it needs to be.
His class is just copying notes from his PowerPoint because you will not have time to do other things during class, most students choose to watch his recording instead. Proofs have to be really clear and in detail or you won't get a full mark. 258 is not an easy class if u take his. It's easy to pass but really hard to get a high mark.
Cares about his students a lot- and easily reachable. We got split into groups to work on math problems so participation is vital. You are graded on a lot of assignments so that the "midterm" and "final" (he calls them celebrations) arent going to affect your mark too poorly. Sent out reminders before celebrations to remember not to worry
Dr. Derek was the bomb diggity, he really cares about his students and their success and makes himself accessible and provides awesome help and feedback. Class works in group assignments and happens fast but doable. Course content was relevant and helpful for real life situations, overall great course, great guy, would recommend!
Derek was my favourite prof from the university of Saskatchewan he is an absolute stud and knows everything, he can help you with any questions you have and is the best
Sooooo much homework and extra work
Derek was a professor that was hard to get a long with. Having taken his class more than once he expected me to lead when math is a subject I struggle with. He assigns group projects over zoom then tells us not to do them alone. Well we are all different areas it's kinda hard not to do them alone. I don't care for his teaching style.
He's really funny! There will be a lot of group activities in MATH150, so make sure you interact with those around you and do your work. I believe he's pretty considerate. He won't deduct marks if you don't "contribute" to discussions as long as you ask questions. Don't wait until the last hour to do your commonplace book.
Derek is easily one of my favourite profs. He gives really amazing feedback and is always willing to answer questions. Given that I usually do struggle with math, his class allowed me to find joy in it. Every night there was around 30 minutes of work. If you hate homework, I would not take this class.
You will have to work in Derek's class, but it is very worth it! He tries his best to make sure everyone in the class is on the same page, and that he's progressing his students' knowledge. He clearly cares about the material and about his students, which is heart-warming.
Amazing prof, very dedicated to his students learning. He will help you with any math related issues you encounter even after completing his class.
Derek Postnikoff is an incredible prof! I was super anxious to take a University level math class, but with Math 150 it really helped my skills and I have improved so much because of it. You can tell that he is loves teaching math and is always willing to help even when you're like me and ask a million questions.
Derek is absolutely amazing. He genuinely cares about helping his students to learn and is always happy to help. Lectures are accessible online and can be watched for attendance. The weekly assignments take some time but if you work on them a bit each day, you will have no problem. The exam was easier than I expected with bonus marks. He is awesome
He is a really good professor who tries to keep the class fun by cracking jokes. Attendance is mandatory and is checked by poll everywhere questions from class.
Genuinely one of the most interesting math classes I've ever taken. Derek is clearly passionate about what he teaches and he always seems very excited to pass that knowledge down to his students. Not particularly a difficult class, though some of the concepts were harder to digest than other math classes, but I've never felt like I wasn't invested.
Very entertaining and informative lectures. He said this was his first time teaching math 163, yet it felt like he had been teaching it for several years. His course was the only one this semester that I would say was actually worth the money. Tough final, make sure you study and practice lots.
I really enjoyed the way Dr. Postnikoff ran his lectures. He is very knowledgeable and passionate in teaching math. However, I found the final to be difficult. He made the short answers hard and he definitely could've made them easier. But, the weekly homework assignments and quizzes were pretty easy so it evens out the final.
Math 163 was a course with a ton of content so be aware of the extra work needed to do well in the class. The final was worth 65% of the final grade causing my grade to drop 25%. With that being said, just be prepared to work hard and I highly recommend attending all the lectures. Derek is a great instructor and is available often for office hours.
I will give him the fact that he is helpful if you have any questions in regards to the actual math, but everything he teaches will be beat to death until you're confused. The class is going to be a ton of work, with very specific instructions. If they are not followed to the letter, you're going to lose marks.
He was a nice guy but I found his explanations in lectures pretty bland and hard to comprehend. It was almost impossible to understand what was happening if you did not go back and read through the textbook to basically grasp the concepts at all
Least favourite professor I've ever had. Over explains simple topics to the point of confusion then will breeze past a complex one.
This is just calculus 30 from highschool with more extra cases and trig. Do the homework, the lectures are recorded, he's good at answering emails. It was fine.
I would of not taken this class if I didn't have to. At first I was very eager and excited to take this however this prof gave off an ignorant vibe. He is intelligent and knows his stuff but made me feel bad at times for not knowing "simple" things. Lots of homework- but felt like this helped boost my mark. Quizzes are hard and so was the final.
Great course for education students who struggle with math. Heavy on homework, but staying on track means you'll pass. Lectures can be repetitive—watch online if needed (2x speed). Group work is random, so connect early. Final is tough, but needs to be to balance easier assignments. Derek is supportive if you ask. Overall, over-hated and great guy.
Was a good lecturer and his explanations make sense but sometimes oversimplifies, but he tends to have a point for that. Only thing I didn't like was his tone and demeanor. Not too bad but just sounds passive-aggressive sometimes. Makes you wonder if he's annoyed or really does care and just has a weird attitude towards struggling students
Dr. Postnikoff is one of my favorite professors. His teaching style works incredibly well for me, but I'd recommend a different professor if one just wants an easy grade.
Dr Postnikoff is my favourite prof of ALL time not only is he so funny and always cracking jokes, he also genuinely cares about his students. He does numerous examples for practice and reteaches simple concepts at the beginning of the term to help in the long run. If you get the chance take his class!!
Professor Derek was great, very nice and straightforward. I would love to have him as a professor again, my only problem was that I could not keep up and the content was hard for me to grasp. But he teaches it very well and makes sure to provide plenty of resources and help outside of class. Lets you know how to succeed in class which was helpful.
Nothing against the professor he is fine, but OH MY GOD is that class terrible. He gives you practice midterms and stuff to study, but when you actually write the midterm you'll find nothing relates to it from the practice one at all. I know it says "Elementary" Calculus but that's just a straight up lie. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IT IS HARD
Wonderful professor teaching a heavy class, assignments got 100% just for submission and quizzes help solidify understanding of the material, make sure to put extra work into this class as it's a lot of content and the final is worth 64% of the final grade or 54% if you attend every class. He rewards students for trying and making their best effort
The class I took wasn't lecture based, you did preparation, group work in class and surveys after. If you love group work this is the class for you, it comes with staying on top of things and is extremely easy to fall behind if you don't prepare. Grading is based on prep, collab, survey, two small test and no final ! He and his TA were helpful
All exams are multiple choice but very challenging, with only 15 questions and options from A to J, making small mistakes easy since questions target common errors. Practice exams are provided but are easier than the real tests. I relied on my high school calculus teachings, so I would not recommend this class to students without that background.
