Mr. Rushing is a know it all. He is very proficient in computers, and thinks everyone else is too. He is not helpful and spends our 3 hour class time talking about California and talks about how he loves music. I did not learn anything and have been completly confused throughout the entire semester. WARNING: DO NOT SIGN UP FOR THIS INSTRUCTOR!!!
Mr. Rushing is an incredibly prepared man. He has so much experience in computers and music, but the problem is that he talks about stuff that's completely irrelevant to the class. He spends too much time telling people to get a job that will earn them lots of money. It's an easy class though. You do have have homework, but it's still an easy A.
Fun easygoing teacher. Doesn't cover the material that well though and is not very helpful in clearing things up at all.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. Rushing is the worst teacher I've ever had. We are midway through the semester and he has graded NOTHING. He talks about irrelevant stuff in class and is never prepared. He seems like a nice guy, but he is a horrible teacher. I finally switched to another section. He's that bad!
Wow....I wish I would read this before I took his class. Everything everybody has said is right on the ball. This guy is an aweful teacher. I don't know how he is still teaching.
This man is absolutely phenomenal at what he does. EXTREMELY knowledgeable when it comes to computers and he will make you very computer literate.
WORST TEACHER EVER!! DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS. He spends more time talking about himself and how much money he has made then actually explaining the work. He make you feel stupid when you ask questions and his lectures are very very boring. TAKE THIS CLASS ONLINE!!!
This online Project Management class was not without significant problems. Confusion ruled and communication was almost non-existent. The department head might want to meet with this professor to review his methods and commitment in order that future classes will run closer to expectations and without repetition of easily avoidable problems.
He would make a good guidance counselor but he is an AWFUL TEACHER!!!!!!! DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS
This was a disaster. His communication is one line at best. He fails to reply to emails in a timely manner. Grades where given a week after the other assignments where due. This didn't allow time for correction in issue with my work. Further more, again, his communication on why you got the grade you did was terrible. STAY AWAY!
Don't even bother. The workload is insane (he doesn't understand MCC's students AT ALL: most of them work full-time and/or have families), his communication is poor, and it takes him weeks to grade assignments (though he demands timeliness). This class should be titled "Intense Project Management for Business Majors". Wish I had looked here first.
The course work is insane. This is my 2nd go around with this teacher and he has added so much more work, expecting you to do all exercises for each chapter, it's insane, the amount of time it takes. I have to mirror everyone on his timely responses and help, your lucky to get any. I'd choose a different class, u won't regret it!
Please do not take his class! im in it right now at mcc online and im about to fail due to his lack of instruction. he expects you to know everything about a class that no one cares about.
I took the short Summer class but there was a TON of work. Heavy text use, 6 HTML projects at the end of each chapter. 2 chances on quizzes. Discussion board assignments were pointless, but easy. The Final project is a 10 page website. He only responded to 2 of my 7 Emails, and I don't think he reads the homework. I got 3 A's that were B's at most.
This class was incredibly hard. The teacher is not very available and doesn't offer much help. If you stick with it and follow the book carefully, you might learn something.
This was my second time taking a class with this professor and the experience was worse the second time around. He is completely unresponsive to the point of many students having to contact the department head to get any response. Took this class online and think he just posts the class and walks away.
Probably knows what he's talking about, but is extremely arrogant. Asks questions like "Why is communication good?" and then marks off for "minimalist answers" if you don't respond with a whole paper. An absolutely disgusting experience.
Instructor does not give any lecture, does not respond to questions and turns back homework 4 weeks late. Avoid this instructor at all costs!!
CIS224. Online class. Worst instructor Ive ever had. No communication. Assignments are too long vs. time allotted. Instructions are vague. No lectures. DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH THIS TEACHE. PROFESSOR MY ARSE!
By far the worst internet course experience yet! He does not respond to e-mais and provides little communication or direction. It was a frustrating experience
probably the worst professor I've ever had. All he talked about was his life and some lessons. They were helpful but he didn't really teach the class. He TALKS A LOT!
Prof. Rushing is actually pretty helpful. Took his online CIS224 class. Sometimes visiting his office for advice is best as he has a lot of projects to grade (not a big fan of the assignments; they are mock projects that do help in a sense). Rigorous class, good professor.
I'm sure his teaching style is very useful if you're taking the course (project management) to become a business major, however as a programming major taking this because it was required, this course was over the top, far too rigorous, and when the online class encountered issues with images in the quizzes (all of them) he seemed unwilling to help.
Mr. Rushing is not helpful at all and his class follows page 1 of the Microsoft Project 2010 from beginning to end. What do I need to pay for a class when all we do is follow a book and do all the assignments. There is so much busy/online work there is no time to do your other classes. YOU LEARN NOTHING! Absolutely avoid this online class!
Everything followed book, assignments were incredibly long even for a week advance notice. Reading his syllabus does not match with information provided throughout the course. If you have asked questions and receive the same answers but does not resolve your issue, then I would NOT recommend this teacher for the course even if it's online!
All assignments follow the book which can get boring, but as long as you do the homework you should do fine. The final project was rather fun as you can go your own way. Not the easiest class.
If you use Mac DO NOT take this class. There are extra steps to take that require the instructor's help and he is VERY unresponsive.
Avoid this professor! Too many assignments w short deadlines-much of class is straight from book w other assignments not being very clear on expectations. No feedback provided regarding the grade you receive on assignments to facilitate learning. Minimal communication & poor organization of the class for an online environment.
Don't take CIS 224 online class with this teacher. He grades the assignments 3 months after submission. Poor communication and the assignment are not enough detailed for an online class.
Don't expect any help. There is a ton of work and if you have questions don't expect any kind of response immediately. This course should be fairly easy but if you get lost or need help you're pretty much on your own. He asks to have it done in advance as if there was so much time to read the book, understand the material, do all the assignments
Do not take this class with this professor. He is not helpful at all, and is a tough grader. This class is not really difficult but the work amount is ridiculous and the fact that he doesn't help and is very rude doesn't help. If there's another teacher for this class go with that teacher not Mr. Rushing.
Professor Rushing expects students to abide by every rule, but his rules are posted all over the place. Two weeks into the semester, he changed submission criteria. I received 0s on all assignments I submitted incorrectly, however Professor Rushing was kind enough to re-grade them. As long as you pay attention and do things as told, you're good.
If there is any other professor that you can take the class with, go with anyone else BUT professor rushing. He is very difficult to work with and when you ask for help he does not give you any direction. The final is the worst part, he has this long report due that the class did not even help prepare students for. Really, anyone else BUT him!
Comes across very rude. If i had a choice, i would avoid taking his class.
I've had this professor twice and the workload for both classes was really intense. CIS224 was pretty easy if you did every exercise in the text before doing the assignments. MGT246 is ridiculous. He assigned 540 pages of reading for the first week (7 ch in PMBOK, 5 in PMP Guide) and a short paper on each chapter.
This is a project management class and they drill how important communication is, his is AWFUL at it. He does not respond in a timely manner to questions or issues. He post instructions on the syllabus that are different to what he post above each lab. First initial, last name, project #, title the book ask for.. DO THIS or he takes -6 points off.
He was the worst professor I have EVER had. He was so bad that I had to contact the department chair multiple times due to him being a terrible communicator ( especially when I needed help), graded so harshly to the point where it was at times borderline unrealistic, and didn't grade any important assignments until the last two weeks of class.
Rude, will not help, many spelling errors in assignments that makes them hard to read. My advice, run in the opposite direction as fast as you can.
This is the first teacher I have ever had who gave me a zero on an assignment. I am a straight A student so I work hard and always put forth the effort. It's hard to do either when the questions asked are not clear, understandable, and the professor is not helpful until after giving you the zero and only then does he tell you what he expected.
Nearly impossible to contact. Doesn't return emails or voice mails. Takes weeks to grade assignments. Still waiting for final grade because he still hasn't graded 3 assignments, including final project. Problems with online final exam still not addressed.
I took CIS105 online for the Fall '16 semester. Easy A. Just do the work and you will pass. There aren't intense deadlines so keep up on the work and you will be fine. Seriously, this class is easy! Just do the work before deadlines and keep up on it, you will do great!
Does not respond to emails. New MS Visual Studio uses 4.5 .NET Framework, his download projects have not been updated and still use 3.5 .NET Framework. It was a pain trying to install 3.5 on Windows 8. Instructions are not clear. They are posted everywhere and contradict each other. If you don't follow the instructions you get a 0.
Run. Run far, far away from this guy. He grades things a month after you submitted them. The instructions are never clear on assignments, or they are posted in multiple locations. The final is a "Capstone Project". You have to include information not discussed or even talked about in class. He doesn't answer emails or questions.
Rushing himself was not bad. He answered the questions I asked and his class was not hard. His deadlines however were illogical and made the class difficult. Get the textbooks and keep up on them. I honestly don't think he does any teaching the textbook does the whole thing.
CIS 224 is Project management using Microsoft project 2013 for windows. The class is 100% useless. The class pretty much teaches one how to do data entry in a program and doesn't cover any methodologies. One part of the class literally directs students to PMI'org and review certifications. Why not just skip this class altogether and just go to PMI?
Run as fastest as u can, the worst teacher I ever have. I don't want to write 4 pages essay because is a lot to write about this teacher. With few words: he doesn't know how to express his home work and whenever he need from students, a lot of writing mistakes which make the assignment even more difficult. The deadlines are messed up, HW messed up
He is a fair instructor. His communication skill are a little off. I had trouble understanding his requirements. Response time was OK. As long as I did the work, I got 100%.
Too much work. Very difficult. Not understanding.
This professor's syllabus is full of contradictions surrounding grading policy and his due dates are always off. Some assignments are assigned in the grade book but aren't linked in course modules so you're constantly wondering if you've missed something. Communication is terrible. He sends automated emails yelling at students to keep up. 0/10
Took online Summer School; assignments seemed overwhelming at first, but once I got into the rhythm it was fine. Like any other Canvas class, due dates were messed up, but he fixed them once they were brought up. Not the best with replies, but I've had worse. I didn't mind the emails reminding me to do my HW haha they helped me plan out my week!
He expects that you read the book before coming to class and that you read the slides. He doesn't really lecture on the topic of the class, but you can ask questions at the start and end of class about subject for the night. He is helpful in class, if you go to his office hours, you may get help. It's sort of a self taught class with jokes.
He was difficult to work with. I emailed him throughout the semester for help/clarification and he would tell me to read the prompt more carefully. He offered little/no feedback on graded assignments. The final was on things we never practiced/discussed during the semester, every fellow classmate I spoke to was as equally as confused as I was.
Professor Rushing's lectures can be long and stray from the class material, but I found them to be much better than lectures that do nothing but summarize a chapter. The assignments were relevant and the final project challenges you how to use what you've learned in what felt like something that could actually be applied to a real life project.
Currently taking CIS224 online. Almost never communicates except to inform you of failing his unclear expectations. Profoundly specific, demanding and bizarre criteria for labeling/submitting work that will bring your grade down significantly without regard for the actual quality of what you're submitting. Doesn't actually teach, all book. Run.
Better in person. Hard to get a hold of for questions. I have complaints about the course software, but not his fault (not work w/ competing MS Office install). Not a very clear instructor for rubrics, but you basically get an A for assignments if you just make it work (as far as I can tell). Be ready to google/ read. He seems overextended...
Not worth taking he doesn't know anything
This person has the world's most asinine naming policies and grading I have ever seen in an elective-based application course. This class is a joke honestly. It's like he got his PMP certification and couldn't find a job doing actual project management so he ended up at a college making student lives miserable. Unclear policies and no feedback.
He gives vague and unclear instructions and then gives you a 0 for aspects of the assignment. Read other reviews of this teacher. STAY FAR AWAY from this guy. Terrible programming instructor. If your assignment doesn't open correctly on his computer, you get a 0. No resubmissions. The final project instructions had no rubric or instructions??
Very terrible professor. I have never got a 0 on an assignment until I had him. He is not understanding at all and if there's any issues you just get a big fat 0. No late work is accepted period. I'm not shocked in the slightest to see all these bad reviews. He offers no insight on your code. If your gunna give a 0, you should atleast give advice!!
Took an SQL class. The guy is a straight up joke of a teacher. Every programming class I have taken before the teachers will grade your code and give you feedback on what you should change to correct it. He just gives you a 0 and says its wrong. He sends announcements telling students to keep up, yet takes months to grade assignments. Run
Would not take this professors class again. Just a terrible experience. extremely rude in emails. Offers no insight or help. He shouldn't have a job. very stressful class. The assignments are worth so much of your grade that if you miss one of them, you're literally screwed you will lose a letter grade. hope I can save someone from taking his class
Takes forever to grade and doesnt provide feedback. He is also pretty mean when you message him. Make sure you submit your files correctly zipped and names according to his ridiculous file naming system or you will fail the homework. Very very strict and hard teacher for an elective class that nobody cares about outside database developers
The worst class I have ever taken. The material itself isn't hard but the obscure naming convention and requirements are what took most of my time/attention. To even take the class I had to create a new Microsoft account & pay 30 dollars a month for MS project 19 because MCC doesn't include it in the student licenses. Take literally anything else.
This class is IMPOSSIBLE for anyone who actually relies on the professor teaching you anything. Similar to other reviews, he basically assigns a book, and you have to teach yourself principles and concepts. Something else incredibly frustrating is he takes WEEKS to grade. I had no clue if I passed over half of the assignments before the final.
Never answers questions directly. Only offers to drop you from the class when you ask for help. Material is not very related to the class description. Felt like an advanced English class with long reports, citations and very detailed formats required. Class has ZERO focus on teaching students. It's all about points and grades.
BE PREPARED TO DO LOADS OF WORK IN THIS CLASS. I've never had a class that required so much hw for an online class. You would think you're taking this class as part of your course material to finish your masters instead of your associates. If you miss one assignment your grade drops drastically. Rushing himself is a good prof he just expects a lot.
Derek is alright. He is very particular about certain things. Threatens to drop a letter grade if you ask a question that to be fair is answered in the syllabus. Particular about how some assignments are done. Is a fairly easy grader if you follow the instructions though. Really on paper, he looks and sounds worse than the class actually is.
I feel his presentation of the material is what made it difficult, as well as his inability to respond in a timely manner. The assignments were not presented in a clear format and most of them were recycled from years before with no attempt at changing dates in the assignment or being clear about things like that.
Was a major hassle to work with. Vague instructions and his email policy is 15 words or less. Like what???? Gives very vague instructions on how to get the software and then is rude when you ask questions about how to get it.
This professor is chaotic to say the least. Nothing is clearly laid out; everything you need to know is a jumbled mess in the announcement section of all things. I recommend using the grade book to get an idea of due dates. He is the only prof offering CIS 224, otherwise, I'd switch. Do not recommend for any class!
If I could give a negative score I would. Doesn't give any sort of clear instructions. Doesn't grade in any sort of timely manner, doesn't provide any kind of guidance. overall doesn't teach. If you can avoid taking any class he teaches do yourself a favor and avoid at all costs.
He never responds to email. He does not teach nor does he attempt to explain. He changes requirements and announcements and emails. He will fail your assignment if you do not name the text file properly or make comments in your scripting files. Demands corporate level results during capstone. Capstone instructions not clear and poorly generated.
Professor Rushing is definitely an interesting professor. Instructions were hard to understand at first but once you label your assignments correctly, you should be okay. Doesn't really teach so you'll have to learn everything by yourself + YouTube. Don't not take this class if you want to get into SQL, not very difficult assignments + test-wise.
Do yourself a favor, & take another professor's class. Written instructions are unclear with lots of errors, & asked for clarification, he unhelpfully replies 3 or 4 days later & tells you to read the instructions. Syllabus says 24 hour turn around time on emails, he doesn't adhere to this. Assignments are lackluster. Be prepared to teach yourself.
A headache to deal with, I've never had a professor this difficult and frustrating to work with. Does not respond to emails, gives textbook assignments without any further detail or instruction. Rushing DOES NOT TEACH. Had a zoom meeting with him about his conduct and he gaslighted me into thinking that I was the issue. Avoid his courses!
Teacher is very condescending and unforgiving. Could be mistaken for a Teachers Assistant as the course material contains multiple errors and flaws in execution, while the teacher refuses to believe their human. Hardly any productive feedback is given in either positive or negative light. Little to no instruction. Not a teacher
Could be mistaken for a Teachers Assistant for his amount of arrogrance, condescending attitude towards others, and failure to correct a plethora of flaws within the course material. Feedback(either good or bad) is useless. Submit button disappears after deadline passes, no late assignments, no exceptions.
Mr. Rushing is one of the worst teachers I've ever had. He makes you rely on the textbook to get all the answers and offers no lectures of his own to make you understand the material. All his homework instructions are extremely vague, and you have to guess what he's referring to in order to get the work done.
The communication from Derek Rushing is among the worst I've seen from any adult. Every announcement he sends out only confuses the class more than they already were. He relies 100% on the textbook teaching his students and he still finds a way to make instructions confusing. I'm convinced he doesn't even know what he's teaching through.
Night lecture is just a waste of time. He does not talk or discuss the class assignments and the projects. He talks about random stuff that does not even make sense. He thinks he is all that with his experience and IT knowledge but he doesn't teach well.
Avoid this professor at all costs. The communication policy is absolutely terrible. He required communications to be 10 words or less. If you exceeded this he would not respond at all. Difficult to understand how the department allows this. You would assume he's paying you to take his course, not the other way around.
This professor is by far the worst at Mesa Community College. He has no interest in his profession or his students. He fails at communicating, either not responding messages or sending a poor response. He has one textbook that doesn't even provide the answers for the exams, expecting the student to "look it up" on a random site.
I've found this course frustrating due to unclear assignment instructions, excessive announcements, and poor communication. The quizzes requiring a password and being available only a day before the due date add unnecessary stress. These issues have made the course difficult to follow, and I wouldn't recommend it.
Never written a bad review about a professor before. Dropped it because quizzes are locked, even if all previous assignments are completed. Assignments ask questions that aren't ANYWHERE in the textbook or in the lecture. Avoid taking his classes at all costs.
He doesn't care about you as a student and it shows. He doesn't respond to messages and generally makes you feel like you should be paying him to be in his online presence. Avoid his classes and learn with a teacher who cares. He doesn't
