He is a very caring and hilarious person. He allowed for an easy transition into a Geography Major, and teaches very well. Dr. Shanahan is my academic advisor, and also loves talking about Wal-Mart, as well as his dislikeness for half-baths!!

I learned so much about geography and border problems around the world. Shanahan is helpful - makes the classes easy to turn up for and everyone should take him - especially if you are an Ed. major

This man is so funny and he even knows what he's talking about. Lots of information and I stay awake for the whole hour and 15 minutes!

Whoever wrote that he should be sent back to England is crazy. You must take a class with this man- he is absolutely hilarious and a great teacher. As someone else pointed out, it is especially a good idea to take his class if you are an Ed major.

Best Prof Ever! Not only is he funny, but he is extremely intelligent. He is willing to talk to you about anything that's on your mind, whether it be about the class or your life. You will learn so much and enjoy every second. Two words: Rabid Badgers!!

Shanahan should be a standup in acadamia. He makes an otherwise monotonous subject incredibly interesting, shows movies on occassion, and his lectures are a pleasure to go to. There is a reason why his classes are the first to fill up in any department!

He is incredible funny. Classes are never boring. Make sure you take good notes, tests are easy once you get the hang of them. Do NOT miss the class before the test, it is a huge help!

One of the best profs at MU. He's interesting, funny, challenging, and understanding. He accepts that much of his work is subjective, and enjoys a hearty discussion during classtime. Seems to grade papers more harsh than tests, which is a good thing.

Just did the London fieldtrip. Fantastic. The city is great and Dr. Shanahan worked hard to make sure that everything went well - even the trip to Paris where we had to get up at 4am for the train. Take this class next summer

Funniest Prof ever. Makes you hate capitalism for good reason and to hate Margaret Thatcher, along with all conservatives. Loves to make fun of American society, politics, life in general. If you ever went to MTWP, or hate MU be prepared to laugh hysterically. Skip class alot, don't take him.

Took the winter session class. Thought it would be hell - 4 hours a day. Shanahan made it easy to sit through. I didn't have to take the final. Got an A. Great teacher - funny and interestng

The mans a nut job, but it's one of the best classes I ever had. he goes off on tangents about the craziest things, and you really have to watch out or you'll get lost in the tangents, but if you can follow along the punchlines are the best. I'd take a class with him again in a heartbeat.

I have taken two classes with him (political and urban geograhy) and I only took two of his exams. Both midterms; I was excluded from taking the final for having an A in his classes. An EXTREMELY good prof to have. Very informative and entertaining! His stories are the greatest and there is some validity to them as well!!! TAKE HIS CLASSES!!!!

Freakin' hilarious. He's worth taking even if you have no interest in geography (or British history, which is basically what this course is). Good guy who is clearly on the side of the students. May the sun never sets on the Shanahan Empire!

Dr. Shanahan is a great professor who really knows what he is teaching. He is a fair grader and keeps his classes interesting with his jokes and comments. If you take him you will learn a lot about Geography.

Dr. S is the best professor on the planet! He has the gift of engaging his students with his quick wit and great sense of humor, but is also firm, but fair. Perfect attendance, taking good notes, studying for quizzes and tests, and giving him your undivided attention during class, is the best way to be successful in this course.

awesome guy, a pretty easy class , notes can be hard to take but take them anyway. when writing essays just keep writing until you have said everything possible and youll do fine. he'll help you when he can but the class is pretty easy and if it is a little hard you wont notice because youll be laughing through most classes anyway! def recommended

How can you say the quizzes are random??? The last quiz was on a specific topic that he told us about before hand...I think you missed class. If you go to class and take notes this class is great. Shanahan is great. The class is interesting and he keeps the evenings lively. What's wrong with getting lots of notes for class? Isn't that the point?

He is an amazing proffesor. I had him this semester for london and I was laughing the entire time. Study for his quizzes and tests and you will be fine. He practically hands you an A on the tests if you read articles and study his notes. Very opinionated but doesn't mean to be offensive. I really want to take another class, and would reccomend him.

Very dynamic and opinionated, but lets face it this is college and that's what students expect. The assignments, tests and quizzes are well balanced. If you come to class and interact with him, then you WILL get at least a B.

This class was entirely online, so there was almost no interaction with him (good or bad depending on how you learn I guess). A lot of reading, but not a lot of quizzes or tests. You can easily get a passing grade without too much effort.

Great professor. Super funny. Extra great because he will call out the annoying students and the know it alls and crush them which is totally hilarious. Class is balanced. Be prepared to give some effort, but not all that hard.

Took evening class, great professor who defn makes 3 hours go by in what seems like half the time. He speaks his mind, which is too hard for some students to handle, but tolerated easily by most, even enjoyed by many! Be sure to not turn in papers late or even arrive in class late, seems to be his biggest annoyance

I had him for an online course, so there was very little interaction. The course was light in work but enjoyable. His good sense of humor was present even though the course was online. Overall, a very enjoyable online course.

This was an online class over summer and it was one of the easiest classes I have ever taken. He emails you several times a week to keep you on track, and the work load is EXTREMELY light. The tests and quizzes were very straight forward. Overall, very easy class, and helpful professor. Highly recommended!

Great Professor! Not for those who are easily offended. I have taken three classes with him and wish I could take more. Very easy to talk to and will meet with you for anything at all. Dr. Shanahan is a wonderful professor. He's very straightforward and passionate about his work. The online class was super easy (I did all the readings and assignments) and the readings were very interesting. I look forward to taking a class with him again this next semester.

He's awesome! I took him for a summer online class. He doesn't ask for much, a couple discussion boards, two quizzes, a paper (easy & your choice of a country), the midterm, and the final. He is very funny, and keeps things interesting and useful. Can't wait to have him again in the Fall!

Amazing prof. Humor is a little dry and he repeats himself alot. Gives few to no assignments and is very clear on what is on tests and quizzes. Practically gives the answers beforehand. Nothing should be a surprise if you take this class.

First, I thought he is gonna be hard professor because he is British. But I end up like him and enjoy the class. He is awesome and funny. You learn a lot and you laugh a lot in this class. After taking this class, I decided to minor in Geography. That's how interesting its gonna get.

I took Urban Geography with him online and it was a very easy course. He was an interesting professor and he had a lot of different opinions on the different topics we discussed. The discussion posts were helpful and the quizzes and tests were not difficult. Definitely a manageable online class. You need the textbook because it's an online class.

Took the 227 class - not sure what the fuss is about. Interesting class and if you just follow the rules you'll be fine. Most of the complaints I heard about were not about class material just about not getting points for missing deadlines. He answers emails quickly - especially in the summer (I did another on line class with him in the winter)

You'll be laughing all lecture. Lectures are very long and very detailed but the quizzes/exams are directly from the lectures. There is a lot of reading but this is an easy A. This is a writing course so of course there is a paper. DO THE ROUGH DRAFT!!! The draft is optional... but you won't get an A in the class if you don't do it!

Shanahan is a fantastic professor and going to his class was something I always looked forward to. Most of his class was lecture but those lectures were always fun and he always open to different ideas. I would recommend him for anyone who needs to take a geography course.

Dr. Shanahan is one of the best professors I've ever had at Millersville. His lectures are very informative and he also uses humor to keep class very enjoyable. Do the homework he assigns (which includes the textbook readings) and if you have to write an essay for his class, I STRONGLY recommend doing the rough draft. Work hard and you'll do fine.

Professor Shanahan is a great professor. Hes very funny while also being incredibly knowledgeable about his subject material. If you have to write a paper for him, do the draft as it will help you get a better grade.

He expects students to put in an effort, and a good one. When he puts an open ended question on an online test he wants several paragraphs and for you to use the 30 minutes allotted to you. Not an unreasonable expectation. If you do that, STUDY, and go to office hours (he wants students to do that!) you will do very well. Hes not hard if you try.

Dr. Shanahan is possibly my favorite professor. Although his class was only offered off campus and once a week, I still by far would rate this my favorite class. Just take good notes and use them for your online tests and you will pass.

Student criticisms seem unfair for this prof as his syllabus is detailed and his weekly emails leave you in no doubt about what needs to be done. As for the student that complained about the draft paper being ungraded because it was incomplete - well you had nine weeks to do the draft and you couldn't get it done? Way to go

An absolutely amazing Professor and my personal favorite. I took a three hour course with him and he keeps it so interesting that time flew. I looked forward going to his class. Very knowledgeable and you will learn a lot if you try, he treats you like an adult and expects more than just high school written papers greatly improving writing skills.

Although much different from his in person class because his humor isnt there the class is still great and very interesting. His study guides help you read the text by asking questions as you read and having an idea what he finds important in the text. Also given are study guides for quizzes and exams.

A good teacher who I would recommend, but be prepared to deal with the snarkiest man you'll ever meet. That's why he gets bad reviews for his online class as if you don't see face to face he's joking, he can seem rude. Also, when taking his class, submit the essay for review that is optional, fix all the errors he points out, and you will get an A.

An amazing professor who is always willing to help. If you read the text and follow his notes you will pass with no problem. He is very strict with writing and will help you improve your writing. Definitely worth taking and you will learn a lot, very fair grader and is quick to respond and help.

A very interesting course covering the geography of health. Definitely different from the usual geography course covering a topic that is relevant during the coronavirus and other pandemics that have and will happen. The textbook is used heavily, follow along with the notes and you will do great.

This class is an intro level class, Dr. Shanahan doesnt ask for a lot in the class by any means. 4 discussion boards with 2 weeks to do it, 2 quizzes, and 2 exams. The material is pretty easy to digest and pretty interesting. He is responsive to emails and willing to help if needed.

Dr. Shanahan gives students every chance to pass his class even allowing for two chances on every multiple choice test. You have two weeks to do a discussion board which only ask for about 400 words in total after your post and commenting on another persons post. You are provide with detailed study guides. Pretty much if you do bad you didnt try.
