Great
Class really isn't that hard, it's staying on top of everything that is. He is pretty cool as a teacher.
BEST TEACHER EVER!!!!! OMG He's sooo cute!!!!
Best professor I've ever had. If you have an opportunity to take his class, DO IT!
This is the hardest class you will ever take. Unless you over analyze topics the way he does, this class will be extremely tough for you to enjoy. He's a good looking professor, but that doesn't make up for the way he teaches. If you end up taking this class, good luck.
Professor Tang is an excellent professor. He makes the class enjoyable with his unique teaching style. The course is a bit challenging, but then again, classes are supposed to be that way. Overall, Professor Tang is the most wonderful professor I have ever met. I wish all professors were like him.
he really loves creativity haha. his lectures are interesting and unique, you wont fall asleep!textbooks are needed for the reading assignments, homework,&a project. he gives a lot of work, so give it your all and you'll receive the grade you earned! plus he's cute! :)
Great Professor! He keeps the class very interesting. He is young and understands students needs and problems.Gives a lot of work but you will leave the class a better writer. For essays he will let you write about anything that interests you.Always available during office hours and easy to contact!Take him if you don't mind writing and want to learn!
Great Professor!! I wish that all AAS profs were so enthusiastic like Prof. Tang! Doesn't hurt that he's easy on the eyes.
He is a harder professor, at least compared to previous and current professors. In class he is great and easy to get along with, but his homework load is...heavy. You'll be doing an average of an assignment per night, so be prepared.
This class is interesting and engaging towards the professor and the classmates. There is group activities in class in order to understand the course & one major group presentation but it was fun. Should take this class if you want to learn about different ethnic backgrounds. Trust, you wouldn't regret it.
I took Professor Tang for public speaking & it's the most fun class that I've had since I started attending CSUN. Since he's young, he fits in with us but also have our respect. He's very nice, caring, creative and understanding. If you need to take a public speaking class to fill a GE, take Tang's class! You won't regret it! Tang rocks my socks!
Such a great class and he is such a great professor. He makes it much more exciting and really helps you understand english writing!
Professor Tang turned out to be a decent teacher, but in the process of taking his class I became so discouraged from his critical personality that I began to give up on life - no exaggerations. He is very vague when he assigns work and he is never satisfied with what his students turn in.
He truly makes you think about issues in another perspective. You just have to show up to class, do all the work, and put a lot of effort into everything you do- it does pay off in the end! Don't let him rain on your parade, he's a really good professor who will push you to be your best!
Professor Tang is the best professor you can possibly take! He is big on creativity and wants you to view situations in a different perspective rather than the "Ms.America" view. He isn't as hard as everyone says. Turn in all the work and attend class. He's extremely kind but vague with the essays. He wants you to write about whatever interests you
I have very mixed emotions about this teacher. He was very interesting and very passionate about his job. His lectures and in class assignments were always interesting. The homework on the other hand was very difficult. There is a LOT of homework in this class and it is all very boring and repetitive.
he's the best speech teacher. You do about 8 speeches throughout the semester but its honestly not too bad. He gives you solid feedback and actually cares about his students. He's pretty young so he connects well with the class. Not that much homework besides the speeches. Take him! It'll probably the funnest class you take
Prof. Tang is cool, super chill & a pretty easy grader. He teaches you to be confident when you're speaking up front. His speech class teaches you to go out of your comfort zone. You do a lot of speeches but all are very easy. He's not that great at explaining things but you catch on easily. Take him! He's a good teacher.
Great teacher, he is a young guy so he can relate very well with his students. He regularly gives out assignments. These are very simple and straight forward. Sometimes they seem like busy work, but you do learn a lot from the class. You will learn to see the world differently. TAKE HIM!
Be prepared for A LOT of homework. Most of it i found to be stupid and useless. Attendance is mandatory and class is so small he WILL notice and comment if you are gone. He is very passionate about the subject, and made a fairly boring subject slightly interesting. The workload was difficult so i would never take again just for that reason.
Professor Tang is one of the greatest Professor I've ever had for Summer Bridge and now for the Fall. :)
By far one of the most life changing professors I have ever had, you will not only grow as a person but you will have a completely different outlook on life. You'll come intending to fulfill a ge and end up not wanting to leave the classroom haha. TAKE HIM!
Wonderful professor. Went in thinking it'd just be a regular Asian American Studies, GE-filling class and actually ended up with some useful life skills. Tang does a great job showcasing and nurturing the speaking abilities of all his students, and he's honest about how they need to improve. Passionate, funny, and overall amazing! Definitely take!
Very good teacher. Cares about his students and takes time to explain assignments.
I took him for aas114A and B and its the best class i had. He is an amazing teacher and is really passionate. there was a lot of group work involved but its always fun. I don't like english classes but this class was very entertaining. TAKE HIM!!
don't take him
Best professor I have taken at CSUN. Highly recommend him. He will only make you do assignments that are necessary. Not many assignments but you do learn. Many group work during class but it is fun and interesting. Always willing to lend a helping hand. If you have the option to take him, DO SO!
This professor is the homie.
Coming into this class, I did not want to take a speech class, but Professor Derek made everyone feel comfortable about speaking in front of the class. There are 5 communication journals, speeches per 2 week but REALLY EASY, honestly you just have to try in the class and it's an easy A. He wants to see effort and improvement through his students.
I wasn't looking forward to taking speech, but I don't regret taking this class. You have more speeches compared to other classes, but believe me, it gets easier every speech. Professor Tang is definitely there for his students and makes the classroom environment enjoyable. If you hate public speaking, TAKE THIS CLASS! It will change your life!
he really helped with the transition into college and was also very honest and respectful.
DO NOT TAKE HIM. Almost a speech every class meeting. Very UNCLEAR with his assignments. He thinks hes 21. Take a different speech class with a different professor. Yes, hes funny, but way too much work and Professor Tang is really rude and does not respond to emails within a decent amount of time. I regretted taking him the first week of school.
Please dont take him. Do yourself a favor. Hes terrible at wat he does. also extremely rude
There's a lot of speeches in this class but he does a good job of giving feedback. You just have to show effort and you'll be good, he's a great professor and I'd definitely recommend him. This was my favorite class this semester!
Very chill, and always experimenting new things in his classroom. You will learn a lot while having fun.
I had professor Tang for AAS 151 and it was actually one of my favorite courses this semester. Yes, there is a speech every week, but it wasn't bad at all, in fact that actually made the experience less nerve wrecking. Furthermore, the classroom environment allows students to make mistakes without feeling too embarrassed.
This class has a lot of speeches, but thats only because he wants you to improve. He's very funny and class is always fun to go to. Attendance is not mandatory but is critical to attend for the speeches. Some reading to do and gives occasional pop quiz, so make sure to read. GREAT PROFESSOR, WOULD TAKE AGAIN.
Professor Derek Tang was an amazing and good professor. He will help you when you need help. His class was amazing.
He is now my favorite professor!!! I was dreading a speech class but it was great. Scary but great. He is very cool and knowledgeable. In some ways it's a difficult class but it will help with your public speaking abilities. Go to class or you'll miss important material!
He is by far my favorite professor at CSUN. He really cares about his students. His teaching style is unlike any other professor. He is the only professor I know that plays music in the beginning of class to pump up the vibe of the class. I had him for AAS 114 A/B and also AAS 151. He is really chill and makes learning fun! HIGHLY SUGGESTED!!
He's a great professor. It's important to go to class because there's a speech almost every week. Weekly speeches may seem intimidating but it's only to help you improve. He gives great feedback and has a unique teaching style. I would take him again. Easily the best class I've taken at CSUN. The red hot chili pepper does not lie, people.
Take him. There's a speech pretty much every week so it's recommended to attend all class sessions. If you want to overcome your fear of public speaking or improve, this class will help. There's always fun activities and fun speech prompts. This class was the one I looked forward to every week and would definitely take again.
He was great throughout the semester. Instead of having 3 big speeches that highly impact your grade throughout the semester, we had many speeches that had relatively small impact on our grade and also helped up overcome whatever nervousness that giving a speech would give us. Loved taking his class.
BEST SPEECH CLASS EVER! RECCOMMEND!
Definitely take him if you're not big on speeches. You WILL see growth and improvement. Sporadic amounts of speeches throughout the semester instead of a pressured amount of big speeches which really helps you practice- for your benefit! He's still fairly young so he knows how to relate and connect with the classroom but still remains professional.
I had the best public speaking experience I probably could have considering the subject matter with prof Tang. He isn't the most organized, but lectures were stimulating and different. There's more speeches than other public speaking classes out there, but it only helps to normalize the experience if it scares you. Grow as a speaker, take him!
he is a great professor. taught me many things that have come to be useful in the university. he is a great professor, although i haven't taken him fro public speaking, although i wish i could. very intelligent guy.
Great teacher! You speak in this class every week so don't even try to skip class. This can be intimidating but seriously it really helps you improve and the speeches are really fun and you can get so creative with it. It gets people out of their comfort zone. Definitely recommend him and this class! Organized and enjoyed it so much!
Honestly one of the best professors I've had as a student. Enjoyable class, very interactive and one of the only classes I looked forward to. Lots of speeches and activities but you'll get out of your comfort zone and learn things that you'll use for the rest of your life. You won't regret taking this professor, don't even think twice.
Prof Tang. has been one of the best to welcome me to the college life. If you do all your work you'll pass the class, he also makes the assignments fun and interactive! If you aren't very social or outspoken I recommend you take D. Tang, he absolutely contributes to coming out of your shell!
Having to do a speech everyday is annoying. The only thing that got me through the class was that the class thought I was funny. Watching introverts doing speeches is cringy so please don't be one. He grades you on you being prepared and his homework is just speech preparation and sometimes 1 paragraph write ups. He roasted me on the last day.
Derek Tang is an amazing teacher. He is energetic everyday and makes his class fun. I was in his early class and I never seem to fall asleep. I was take the class again or have him as my teacher. Make sure you read. Do not skip class.
The class is small so he'll know if you did not come to class. The work is manageable. He expects above and beyond on assignments. Easy A if you come to class and put in effort in assignments.
One of the most interesting classes. Better be ready to sing, act, and do speeches! Not the easiest A but try your best and you ill get an A. very fun teacher!
You cannot be shy or afraid in this class. You will do quite a few speeches, and along with that there is singing and acting. You will definitely grow as a person and learn great life lessons through this class. Prof Tang prioritizes personal growth and actual learning over letter grades and scores. And you'll definitely make friends in this class!
Professor Derek Tang is definitely one of the best! He is inspiring and teaches you life lessons/realizations almost every class meeting. Show up to class, be respectful and put effort and creativity into your work and you will pass! Loved his class!
His class would've been awesome if he stopped playing favorites. If you are good looking and LOUD, you'll get an easy A but he's super tough on people that are shy and doesn't appreciate their effort as much as the already outgoing people. He acts like a teenager trying to be relatable but doesn't work. Be prepared to be unclear about your grade.
Wouldnt recommend this professor if youre trying to learn and use your time as much as you can. He plays favorites and tries to act like a peer more than a professor, I hate going to his class because I dont learn anything and he doesnt understand that I pay money for this so I want the best that I can get out of it. Waste of time.
Prof Tang tries to be cool and young, to the point where it can get inappropriate in a professional setting. I was recommended to take this Professor, but I wished I took Turnmeyer instead. Tang is knowledgable and gives good lectures, but he needs to stop trying to connect to the students, rather be someone they can look up to and simply teach.
Show up and pass. Speeches every week so be prepared for those.
Had speeches every week. Did not post up grades, so it was hard to find out whether passing or not.
tbh, i kind of got bored in class sometimes but the people in the class weren't that bad to talk to especially the people i worked with. S/O to prof Tang tho, his class creates new friendships but wtf man there would be random people who aren't enrolled in the class sit in the back of the class and we have to go look for an empty seat smh but 11/10
It's a speech class so show up and try harder each week! He gives you the grade you truly deserve. I wasn't the best speaker but I tried each week and I showed up and I got an A! He's great at teaching how to speeches. Not your usual ones. Singing, acting, rapping, scenes, a whole lot of things besides memorization speeches.
I wonder if his Filipino friends say "tang ina mo". Prof tang is a really cool guy, great choice of music and his lectures are amazing. There's no textbook so don't trip on them thousand dollar books. I RECOMMEND HIM!!!
Just show up and pass, that's what I did LOL
Took his class, and he mostly gives detailed lectures that are pretty interesting, there weren't many essays, super easy chill class.
This class is not as hard as people say it is. His class lectures are very interesting. One thing, you should know is that he is very vague with his assignment directions, which allows to freely express yourself through your writing. Through this class, you will be able to learn more about yourself and those around you. Totally recommend.
Terribly unorganized, does not post grades until last two weeks of semester. Syllabus was not made well and cant even read anything on it. Never followed the schedule he gave us & never answered one email. Syllabus said all speeches were 10 pts each, yet made some out of 100 w/ out telling us. Made students go to class during the threats on campus.
Hes a bit yonger so he is more relatable than most professors and in his class you will have interesting discussions. I recommend everyone to take his class.
Prof Tang was an amazing professor. The lack of having a Canvas or a way to show us our grades kind of sucked but he was such a chill professor. He knew how to tie in current events with whatever lesson he was teaching us for the week. Just do the homework assignments, check the syllabus, and show up for credit.
Chill class, a lot of participation is required but worth it, he doesn't post grades until the end, but you can tell what your grade is.
In this class, Prof Tang encouraged us to get to know people in the class, and at the end of the semester the vibe in the class was fun. Throughout the semester, we had a few papers, with our final being a 15 page essay. As long as you show up (he counts points towards that & gives easy pop quizzes) and try not to procrastinate, the class is easy.
Professor Tang is such a great public speaking class. He really wants his students to get out of the box and out of their comfort zone. Makes things relatable , funny stories. Just make sure he sees your improvement throughout the semester Take this class if youre looking for an easy A and a fun professor!
Wonderful professor who takes time to get to know students and encourages them to be engaged in class discussions and activities. Does not strictly follow the syllabus, but is willing to clarify any questions asked. He requires everyone to put in effort in the class, but in a nice and helpful way rather than a strict environment.
Professor Tang was a laid back and chill professor. I loved coming to his class. His final was a 10-page essay with a 2-page bibliography. It sounds hard, but he gave us a little more than a month to do it. Don't procrastinate and you should be fine. He was very easy to talk to. As long as you show up, do your work, and participate, you will pass!
Prof Tang is the best! If you're scared of public speaking, don't be! Make friends in the class and rehearse your speeches ahead of time. Be creative with your topics, bc you can do whatever topic you want for your speeches. Activities are in-class, so attend all the sessions. Small write-ups here and there, nothing overwhelming. Take him! Easy A.
I took Prof. Tang a long time ago for AAS151. He is one of the coolest teachers that you would want to take. Friendships are made here as well. It's fun to see how improv will be one of the best skills to utilize in the future. I highly recommend Prof. Tang. You won't regret it.
A really chill professor. Applies what he teaches into real life scenarios.
Professor Tang is an amazing professor. He's extremely caring and you could tell that he dedicates a lot of time into his class. He provides students with extremely helpful feedback that could be brought and used in every other class.
I would definitely take this course again! He didn't assign heavy work and instead we had three essays the entire semester which weren't that difficult. In this class you have to present, but it's nothing to stress about coming from a student who stresses a lot. He is very understanding and lenient about projects.
I think he might have just had a bad semester but Prof Tang was so disorganized, didn't make a canvas page or syllabus till the last 2 weeks, and was always falling behind. He seems nice so hopefully in person is better. He also gave each student inconsistent answers so we were always confused on what was going on.
Prof. Tang made class really enjoyable :) I hope people consider taking his class, he's super genuine and he seems like he really likes what he does for a livimg
Very engaging and fun teacher, you kind of look forward to going to class because his homework connects with his lecture and is fun to do. Had no tests only one main assignment which is his essay project
Professor Tang was a very genuinely interesting professor to talk and listen to. He had a lot of class discussions and honestly if you did your work and showed up you would almost definitely pass. A great class overall really laidback
I was nervous about taking a speech class, but seriously his class made me enjoy coming to school. I took AAS 151, and it was unlike any speech class I've taken. He pushes you out of your comfort zone in the best way possible, and I've learned so many useful skills. I struggle w/ anxiety, and though this class made me anxious, it helped me so much.
Nice professor, someone who I can respect as a student, and the professor I would love to take again. At first, I thought it would be another boring lecture class, but he created a friendly atmosphere for everyone which opened us about us including myself because at the end, I won the Most Encouraging Speaker.
This professor cemented himself as one of my favorite instructors within the first hour of his first lecture, that says it all. If I could pay to retake his class I'd do it in a heartbeat. If you are not a social person I would recommend this class but be warned you will present a lot and do things that will embarrass you.
The best educator I have had in all my years of school. You will pass this class with flying colors if you open up your mind and actually try for each assignment. He is very lenient with grading and is very meticulous with the feedback he gives. If I could I would rate this professor way higher than a 5. Take this class you wont regret it.
Professor Tang is one of the best professors on campus. He is able to take a group of students who at the beginning of the semester are nervous to talk in front of one another, and make them all friends by the end. He is very caring, and the presentations we had to do in class were interesting and allowed us to be creative in many different ways.
AMAZINGGG!! this class was so fun to take, I would give anything to take it again. he always strives for students to go beyond and further. don't stress the assignments super easy!
prof tang was really sweet throughout the semester. i really enjoyed his class; i always looked forward to it because he fosters an environment where his students can be comfortable with each other and have fun. you may be asked to do or perform something embarrassing but he tries to make it easy for everyone. i really recommend him :]
I took AAS 151 Public Speaking and it was honestly one of the best classes Ive ever took. Professor was awesome he's respectful and he grades very fair, as long as you try you'll be good. There will be some embarrassing assignments like singing and acting but it was so worth it. Professor and the students were always a great to be around. 10/10
He is always excited to teach. He actually enjoys his job. He is very approachable. His extra credit is always super easy and usually involves some kind of competition.
Professor Tang's AAS151 class was amazing! Despite the occasional embarrassing assignments, his supportive approach made it a blast. unstuck AI and the free textbook were super helpful for acing this fun, interactive course.
He's cool as a person but not as a professor. He gives us work that isn't beneficial and just more unneeded stressful that he swore was useful (It wasn't). He also gave vocabulary pop quizzes with only one day to prepare. They were the bane of my existence. The amount of consistent, non-ending, tedious work was too much. Also, very slow grader
Prof Tang was an easy professor. Not too many writing assignments. Only downside is that he takes forever to grade assignments and is impossible to reach through email. There's also word quizzes, but be prepared to be notified 2 days in advance for them. Lecture's were fun and he likes what he does! Overall an easy class but make sure to attend!
I took his AAS 113 course in my spring semester and he gives you useless words quizzes that if don't do well it will affect your overall grade the midterm is based on those words. Be ready to memorize at least 100 words with its definitions. You also gonna watch documentaries and then write papers about it. He also grades at the end of the semester
Easily my best professor
Prof Tang is really nice and patient with students. He is understanding with being nervous when performing. He really encourages students to get better with speaking up for themselves.
Just show up to class and be prepared to step outside your comfort zones, less speeches and more "doing" (acting, singing, etc), there's also a decent amount of group work if you enjoy that. Stuff like singing isn't bad because the entire class is also struggling. Only issue is he grades stuff really slow, so that's the only downside.
