shes a very smart teacher, is relatively clear. class isnt that hard as long as you GO to it regularly. the only real bad thing is that she only presents one side of arguments.
Dereka is a way cool teacher when you get to know her. I suggest definitely attending all her classes. As long as you go and make an effort, it shouldnt be to hard to get a good grade in her classes.
Wonderful professor! Pretty well organized, clearly explains the topic but the textbook sucked. Do not read out of the book, ATTEND class. She doesn't take attendance but attending class is the only way to do well on her exams. If you are going to ask a question, do it in office hours - she'll snap at you if she doesn't know you. Highly reccomend h
Take any class you can with her, she's the best in the department. Here's how to get an A: DON'T buy the textbook, DO go to class every day, take notes and stay involved. If you can win her over, she's a great friend to have.
Rushbrook is truly amazing. As the others said go to class, take copious notes, get to know her, go to office hours etc. and you will be set. She is very understanding and will show you the same or more respect then you give her. Assuming you do all of this, getting a good grade should be relatively easy.
She doesn't have already made notes, everything she teaches is basically right off the top of her head. She covers everything you will need to know, extremely well. If you show up to class, you will easily be able to get an A or B
A very good teacher, however, this particular class had very little use to my as it focused on acedemic research proposals and I am graduating. I have heard that her other classes were good.
Rushbrook is a very solid teacher that makes every point clear. The assignments are challenging but nothing a motivated student can't handle, lectures are well-paced and cover a lot of content quickly, and she's generally very helpful in office hours.
She was not my discussion leader, but as a lecturer, she tries hard to share her enjoyment of Geography with her students. Keep up with the homework, and follow the essay instructions carefully. She's an overall good teacher; I would recommend her.
Attendence: Is not mad. but she does random will do a random "pop quiz" and it doesnt matter if you answer correctly it just matters that you are PRESENT. Usually once a week. Exams:Pretty easy, I got an 85% w/o studying at all.2 BIGpapers, over a specific country. Overall, WISH I HAD ENROLLED IN A DIFF. CLASS. Not the most interesting material
Can be easy if you DO the READINGS.Before her lecture slides, be sure to pay attention to the title page full of random facts, true & false Qs, or multiple choice Qs, they will appear on exams. Do NOT procrastinate on the papers otherwise it WILL bring your grade down, and the grading is fair based on what T.A. you get.
Powerpoints but goes off topics that no one gets
Weekly assignments are pretty easy but the tests are really hard with confusing questions. Depending on your TA the papers are graded really hard for an entree level class. Take another class if you can!
Dr. Rusbrook is not a very good teacher. She does not make the lectures interesting or the tests easy. She doesn't post her power points online so it's hard for you to get notes when she goes through the slides pretty fast. Take a different class if you can!!
Great teacher with an awesome sense of humor. Not that hard of a course if you do the readings and participate in discussion. A lot of the material is common sense, and tying concepts together is key.
Good class. She is a great teacher and very knowledgeable. She definitely enjoys what she does. 1st research paper is easy (you get spoon-fed what to analyze), while 2nd is harder. Exams, however, are tough for a GenEd class. Take good notes and read the book and you should do well on the exams & final, although I received exemption from the final.
Easy class, 3 exams and 2 big papers. Everything is pretty basic but interesting. Tests are very similar to the previous exams posted to D2L. If you study for tests and do well on the papers and you'll have an A. Also, if you have an A by the end of the semester you will be exempt from the final.
I wasn't expecting much from this class (it's an indv)- but course materials are interesting. Some days it's easy to fall asleep during lecture but she speaks very clearly.
I disagree with the previous entries. Hardest gen-ed i've taken. Easy to get a B on everything but if your lookin for the A, you need both luck and cunning. No study guide - just previous tests. Doesnt post power points. Expects tons of weekly work in addition to tests and papers (one of which is about 9 pgs). I am a straight A student. Got a B. BS
This is probably the most straight forward gen-ed you can take at Arizona. If you go to class, go to discussion, and spend not even an hour of review for the mid-terms you'll get an A. Dr. Rushbrook is straight forward with the lecture and gives multiple examples
Good class. Should goto office hours it will help you get an 'A'
You can't go wrong with Dereka. Her class was a bit difficult and unorganized, but she knew her stuff. Her lecture style is engaging and she facilitates discussions well. Her classes are fun because she often mixes up her structure, letting us do group work, etc. While she can come off as abrasive sometimes, she really does care about her students.
If you take notes daily, extremely easy class. She is very biased so if you write papers or answers with her in mind you will do fine. Class is extremely unorganized and due dates / assignments will change constantly. I enjoyed the class more than I expected I would and learned a lot of information although it is mostly trivia answers..
Ok this is the most unorganized teacher ever. She isn't clear about what she wants; she'll tell you one thing and then when you do it, she claims to have said something else and it hurts your grade. She never knows what's going on in her OWN class. For our final test she posted the study guide (4 pages long) the NIGHT before. Awful teacher.
The material taught in this class actually isnt that hard at all. However, the teacher is extremely disorganized and it is frustrating sometimes. I still dont even know if we are having a final exam or not!
I feel that I learned a lot from this course, especially the past & the present state of our world. There are 3 group projects, book review, 3 exams w/a study guide. Use the study guide to study & u'll do fine. There is also extra credit in this class. Her directions and lectures are confusing at times Doesn't hand things back in a timely manner.
She is completely disorganized which affects nearly every student. Rushbrook is a terrible teacher. Avoid all classes she teaches, you will not regret it. She is the head of regional development which is a shame because her attitude towards students in class and during office hours is ridiculous. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
This class is split between 2 teachers. Dr. Rushbrook was not my favorite of the two. She often seems unprepared (and uninterested) during lecture. She is disorganized with the weekly activities, and unclear about what she expects of the student. It is possible to get an A, however, more effort is required than is really necessary...
This is your typical "Go to class regularly and pay attention and you'll get an A" type of class. The exams are almost entirely drawn from either information presented in class, or lifted word for word from exams from previous semesters (which she makes available on D2L). Assignments were less than 2 pages each, and were pretty straightforward.
As long as you attend class, the tests are easy. The textbook is listed as required but I didn't open it once. She was perhaps a little disorganized, but not enough to actually affect my performance in the class. Most of the material was pretty interesting too, so I would recommend this class.
She teaches two out of the three sections for the class, and the essays in her sections are so easy at around 400-600 words each. The tests are also super easy, about 80% of the questions on the exams are taken from previous exams which she posts online. Just know the answers for those exams and you'll ace the tests no problem.
The material was far more interesting than the people teaching it. I'm thankful we had discussion so that we could actually talk about interesting topics, and my TA was great. Very easy essays, and easy tests.
Doesn't give clear directions on most projects. Paid 135.00 for a text that was never used.
The most unorganized teacher I have ever had. Do not take this class.
Professor Plane was a much clearer teacher. Rushbrook speaks fast and her power points are really wordy. She is just hard to follow. SO BORING. I taught myself most of the material of the the textbook, which was very helpful. Her test are that hard if you study the book and the questions she puts up online.
She can be unorganized and late to class on a regular basis but she is a good teacher who is very helpful, just go to class and the class is cake
Never post grades, scantron test are always graded wrong and not corrected, painfully uninspiring, most unorganized teacher I have ever had, always watching videos because she doesn't have material, all students are confused about due dates. Avoid Professor Rushbrook classes.
Grades tests wrong. Very confusing when things are due. Takes forever to grade things. Gives you no help, blames her mistakes on the class. Avoid this teacher.
You can study material and still be crossing your fingers when you get the grade back. It is not because the class is hard, it is because the test are never graded right. Taking this class is like gambling with your GPA.. DON'T TAKE RUSHBROOK CLASSES!!!!!
consistently inconsistent.. Post chapters of readings for exams at 8pm the night before the test, grades hard even though she gives unclear directions, you are wrong, she is ALWAYS right, doesn't care about student progress.. Half of the class is barely passing because of her unorganized habits. Worst teacher so far in my college experience.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Dr. Rushbrook is never clear on what she wants from her assignments, changes deadlines and requirements at the drop of a hat, posts readings and study guides for exams the night before the exam, doesn't calculate grades correctly, and then has the audacity to be rude and condescending when you ask her any questions. Avoid!!!
Worst class I have taken at U of A. Worst at responding to emails, very unclear with assignments, wasn't really sure what was due or how she wanted papers written. Did not put one grade in till the last week of the semester. Somehow I received an A in the class but went through the whole semester unsure if I was even passing.
Worst online class ever. I really liked the topics but I have never had this disorganized of a teacher. Very unclear with assignments, did not post one grade till the last week of school (anxiety much), randomly would assign a discussion on a wednesday that was due on a friday? had to constantly check emails. would not respond to email.
Show up and do the test reviews the night before. Super smart, helpful, and interesting.
It is a full week after the last final and 2 weeks after we completed her class and not ONE grade has been entered. I have no idea what I'm going to receive and it's quite infuriating. EVERYTHING was UNCLEAR in this class. We never knew when a new assignment would be added or due dates or details. She demands a lot for absolutely nothing in return.
Some cool topics, but I only got feedback on one assignment all semester, and grades weren't posted until 2 weeks after the final project. Unclear expectations for assignments and no real through-line or key topics for the course. Dr. Rushbrook knows a lot of cool stuff but if you need organization or feedback.. or grades... take something else.
This was by far the worst class I have taken at the University of Arizona. She never gave feedback, and I only got one grade back all semester. I haven't even had my grade posted in UAccess yet and the class ended a week ago.. She is completely disorganized and had intermittent internet access while teaching a course completely online.
This class has no structure and the teacher is unorganized. The tests are unfair and hard as there is no study guide provided, or any materials for that matter. The lectures are useless as it is unclear what the focus is even on. There isn't any homework at all, but the tests are crazy detailed. don't take this class
There are several small projects throughout the semester that aren't hard to do, but extremely time consuming especially due to the lack of instruction. Never is one time to class and worse off is never prepared for class. The material is really interesting but the teacher doesn't seem to care about the students learning the material.
Worst teach I have ever had!
Dereka is an awful instructor. She's nice if you catch her on a good day, otherwise expect irrational behavior. She's never prepared for class. She'll postpone/cancel an exam if she isn't prepared, but it's more annoying than helpful. Feedback comes very late, if ever. Doesn't care about students' time. I'm amazed she still has a job, honestly.
She is not a good teacher! Do not take any of her classes! She is super disrespectful to all her students and she grades incredibly arbitrarily! The tests are really hard and she makes them hard to study for as she doesn't tell you what will be one the tests. She hates when people ask questions as well, no matter the question. DO NOT TAKE IT!
This course was one of the hardest I've ever taken at the UA. Dereka was completely unorganized, still has no grades entered into D2L, doesn't respond to emails, and puts assignments up last minute and expects them to be completed the next day. Throughout the semester I was completely anxiety-ridden because of this class, and other classmates have.
Come on guys... she may be unorganized but she really cares. if you go to her office hours you will see that she really cares about her students and the subject she is teaching. Just pass the class and give her a break. Geography rocks.
Lectures were unorganized. Not what I expected when I was going into the course, hard to see the overall picture of how small topics connected. Tests were easy, but slightly long. Discussions were not that helpful. Strict, but as long as you do your work, she's accepting. But never would be wrong, did not make me feel comfortable to talk in class.
Don't take this class!
-very unorganized -terrible at grading in timely manner -rude to students -doesnt grade consistently -made students add up parts of grades on a test worth different points and calculate grade ourselves -late often -well versed in field but lectures are incoherent and she rambles - does not post any notes online -ridiculous rules in classroom
Dereka seems tough but is a sweet heart if you go and meet with her. But you can't do well in her class if you are absent or try not do the reading or take notes.
Extremely rude and condescending to all of her students in lecture. Her policies have shown to be more disruptive than anything her students do. Need to go to the bathroom? you'll be kicked out of class. She puts no material online, doesn't have a class list on D2L so you cant contact other students. And she puts no effort forward to prepare you.
Extremely unorganized and unclear. Half of class time is spent doing busy work. She doesnt post materials online. For example, maybe 1/3 of the class actually has the syllabus because it was never posted online. Do not take dereka if you actually want to learn the subject matter.
You have to actually put in effort to do well. Rushbrook can come across as abrasive in class, but she just doesn't put up with students who want to do nothing and get good grades. She is very accessible outside of class. If you care, you'll get an A.
I did very well in the class, but her lack of organization is stressful and made me feel like I was doing a lot worse than I actually was. Not a lot of homework, but it's important to go to class because she does not utilize D2L. She has a few strange rules and is not scared to enforce them. Sometimes chaotic at times, but I would take her again.
Dr. Rushbrook has definitely gotten a bad rep. She is actually very caring with her students. Her in-class notes taking is paper only which in reality is nice because it makes the class go by super quick and kept you focus on the subject. As long as you actually talk to her and be honest, she is fine. I would recommend her to anyone.
I had her for GEOG 374 as well and honestly felt like she was really kind and considerate of her students w Covid and all. Very lecture heavy but I didn't think that they were boring and lots of very very short discussion posts (just for participation in 302) most of the time its just what we talked about in class. Shes really sweet!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!! I thought I was getting into a fun Geography of Beer class but Dereka was very unorganized, did not record or post lecture slides. She lectures too fast to take notes so unless you absorb information well you will not do well in this class. Also the few assignments you get she grades harshly with limited feedback. Beware!
Hands down the worst professor Ive had at the university. Very unclear on instructions and unorganized. It almost feels like shes working against her students and doesnt want them to get a good grade. Stay away from this class.
To put it lightly, she is without a doubt the worst teacher I've had at the University. Throughout every lecture it seems as if she has no idea what is going on or what she is talking about. She refuses to post grades after repeating that she will have them posted for multiple weeks. She is quite infuriating, however the class is somewhat easy.
Professor Rushbrook knows a lot on the subject matter and makes for an interesting class. However, you are left in dark in regards to grades and assignments. Rushbrook never responds to emails and frequently changes up due date times. This has made for an incredibly confusing course and one where you don't know where you stand in the class.
She is one of the worst professors I have had. I understand the difficulty in adjusting to the COVID pandemic for a professor, but it is like she has never used D2L. Her lectures are extraordinarily boring and not very useful, and it is very unclear week to week what the readings and assignments are. She seems nice, but that is the only good thing.
Dr. Rushbrook is very knowledgable about the field, however, the class set up: assignment due dates, test formats, attendance points, ppts/lectures were scattered, hard to find, and disorganized. She is looking to make changes to the class so hopefully things will be different for future semesters. If you can get ahold of her, she is very helpful.
With no exaggeration the worst professor I have had at UofA. Extremely disorganized. Assignments had barely any instructions-extremely vague, but she would get irritated if you asked too many questions about it. Not timely with inputting grades. The syllabus, grade book, and assignment/quiz tabs did not match up. Definitely avoid her.
Very unorganized, forgot when our exam date was, we had to remind her. She forgot about a big project coming up, and had to remind her to give us the instructions for it with time. Even the instruction were unclear and there is no rubric for any assignment. Easy class if you keep yourself on top of every deadline. Tough grader.
AVOID. Prof never responds to emails, forgets to upload content to D2L every single week, and doesn't have a gradebook or any grading policies available. You'll have no idea what grade you have until its too late, and the prof isn't going to help because she won't read your emails. Drops assignments and random, hard to know when and what is due
D. Rushbrook was the worst professor I have ever had. The grading criteria is very unclear and she never responds to emails making it very hard to see where you stand in the class. Avoid at all costs!
One word: Incompetence. Doesn't update grades. Grading criteria is subjective nonsense. Doesn't grade the case study proposal prior to final project. Meandering unplanned lectures, frequently loses track of time. No exam review whatsoever. Exams are mostly subjective nonsense. Looking for a Business ethics credit? Get out now.
Were about 4 days out from the end of the semester. The class is graded out of 1120 points. 240 points have been entered into the gradebook. We have no clue what our grades will be because shes graded less than 25% of the work weve turned in
Lack of grading in a timely fashion, waiting on grades for an assignment turned in 2 months ago. Most disorganized class I've ever taken. Zero updates throughout the course / what needs to be studied then posts a message identifying a list of topics the day before the test. Would get frustrated and talk down to students at times. Do Not Recommend!
She has a lot readings and clearly cares about the topic. She is terrible with using D2L and communicating what needs to be done on a day to day basis. Feedback is slow but she wants you to succeed. She is late frequently.
very unorganized, very late grading and no set schedule of work
Chill prof. some quirks, but also knows a lot and can be accommodating.
Avoid professor Rushbrook if possible. She's extremely disorganized. Her grading system is garbage. She even encourages us to not do some of her assignments, but then gives us no explanation on how to calculate our grades. She edits the amount of points things are worth after they have been graded. Its super stressful figuring out your grade.
i hate her with every bone in my body
Try to always submit on time and professor will always give great feedback
This professor really ruined
never again
I feel like she is very knowledgeable and covers interesting material in the course, but she is extremely disorganized. She can sometimes be up to 10mins late to class, and grades take a while to be entered. Overall the class was okay, but if you appreciate structure and consistency, I would consider looking for another class/professor.
This teacher does not do a great job at all explaining assignments throughout the semester. Most of the time she briefly explains something once then expects you to meet her standards without going into great detail. The tests aren't much easier with a lousy study guide and no lectures posted.
the classroom space felt hard to talk in or interact without judgement by the teacher
She is awful! We are halfway through the semester, with not a single assignment graded. She never responds to emails, and don't even think about asking a question in class, she will yell at you. She is difficult to get in contact with. Always shows up late to class, and her assignments are very unclear. TAKE THIS CLASS ONLINE WITH A DIFFERENT PROF!
Do not take her class. She never puts grades in and she grades incredibly harshly. She's also quite mean to a few of her students - myself included. She doesn't handle situations very well either. Would not recommend.
When I took her class I was a Junior and I ended up switching my major because she was so terrible. I don't even know how she got hired at the school. She was very disrespectful and does not care about her students. The only reason I passed was because she didn't want to look bad if everyone failed. I would not recommend her class to anyone.
doesnt update grades, gives participation assignments in class but never grades them until the last week of the semester so we aren't sure which one counts. I genuinely hope u get fired dereka.
Not so bad if you have no expectations of entered grades and get to know her personally.
Dereka isn't as bad as people think. She didn't grade our assignments till the end of the semester, so it was hard knowing what grade you had. Just turn in all assignments on time, and take notes during the lectures as the exams were based on them. I took this class as a gen ed, but it was really fun with Dereka.
Unorganized, scattered and unprofessional. Went to office hours to get help and she told me she "didn't have time for me because she was too busy preparing for her other classes". Academic accommodations were never provided despite contacting DRC. Avoid taking her classes at all costs! Poor reviews are well deserved.
A caring professor.
She's the best professor. Actually, my favorite at the University of Arizona. I really enjoyed her classes. She doesn't always post grades regularly, but as long as you show up and stay engaged, you'll be fine. Just don't rely on AI for your assignments or projects. She's absolutely amazing!
At the end of the day the class was not that difficult and Dr. Rushbrook was willing to make accommodations to help me succeed. The quiz questions were not clearly worded and often included typos, many of the readings were behind paywalls, the due dates were not standardized, and the grading took the entire session and was inconsistent.
Very clear. Just follow her guidelines, participate, and be respectful. I felt she was very fair and would accommodate to us. I'm honestly really confused why she has such a harsh rating here since I loved her and her class.
Dr. Rushbrook hates students who sit in the back and complain and makes excuses for being terrible students and people. But she loves students who participate. So if you hate Dr. Rushbrook it is because you are one of the ones who deserves the hate. I have taken three classes with Dr. Rushbrook and she is consistent at least.
At first, I hated this woman. But, I realized I was getting out what I was putting in. Don't sit in the back like me, she'll hate you. Sit in the front, pay attention to lecture. However, the quizzes are like AP tests in HS. Its pretty easy to do well, its a geo class. Respect her and she'll respect u. Don't, and u'll regret it. DONT TAKE 4 GENED.
Dr. D isn't the most organized professor. Grading and due dates are kind of up in the air, which can be frustrating. But she's very knowledgeable about the subject matter, and her assignments are really fun and inventive. If you consistently show that you're paying attention and putting effort into the class, she'll notice.
This professor exhibits rude and unprofes, sional behavior. When I asked how to earn an A, she commented I smiled too much in class and said when I went I might as well have not been there. She was very disorganized throughout the semester, though she eventually corrected a grading issue at the end. I believe the whole issue could've been avoided.
