This guy is extremely rude. Ask him a question about his writing and he'll mock you. His reviews before midterms and finals are practically give the exam away.
Clive is awesome! His review sessions make the exams very easy.
If you like British Humour, you'll love this guy, he's hilarious. He also tells you exactly what is on his exams, so if you must take Organic Chem, take it with him!
Ladies and gentlemen today I must continue my discussion on the chemistry of carbon compounds. . .One of my favourite profs so far. He really knew his stuff. I am pleased to have benifited from his judicious application of superior intelectual horsepower
Really nice...exams are fair with review sessions...
His interesting lectures & review sessions makes exams are really easy, thanks!
best prof ever... organic isn't so bad with him... too bad he doesnt teach 263 tho!
Rambles needlessly, wastes time. Jokes are funny. Easy exams, but don't see him one on one. Don't bother buying the text. Try to copy the scribbles he has for notes...and you will do well in this class.
Get his old exams, he literally recycles his questions. Doesn't change them at all.
I wish he'd compile his stories into some memoirs, I'd die laughing, always gets a drink halfway through class, one time after doing so he muses "It is incredible that a university such as this one doesn't even provide suitable refreshment for it's s
Very funny stories. Gotta love the microscopic midgets he uses to explain forces. The car stories are good too.Very fair tests. Go to reviews! Same Qs on tests!!
This guy is a beauty. He makes going to class fun and enjoyable. He's got a great sense of humor and seems to enjoy teaching. Best prof i've had so far at U of A
one word- helibebcnofninamgalsipsclar. this guy is funny as hell and if u want an easy proff hes your man-very easy b/b+, very difficult A/A+ since his exams are so easy and he tells everyone exactly whats on them, averages are high. stupid mistakes will cost you. this guy is a class act.
This prof is the man...he makes organic chemistry something not to be afraid of.....for sure get into his class.
Great guy! Makes things very clear; makes organic chem very straightforward, unlike other profs. Very nice, polite, and quite funny. He gets a little nervous one-on-one, but when he's lecturing, he really gets into it. If you need chem X61/X63, take it from him over anyone else.
Makes things very clear because he talks slowly and repeats. He made Organic fun to learn and his exams were extremely easy if you study.
Great prof. Made organic bearable. He explains concepts really well and that's hard to do with this class. His help sessions are the best thing ever invented. Easy exams
crappy. that's all.
Bad prof with good intentions. His notes are no different than chicken scratch, he jumps all over the place, and rarely explains concepts. His midterm was approx. 10 pgs long, each w/ 5-10 parts for a 50 minute exam w/ a class avg. of 50ish%, even after he told everyone exactly what was on the exam. Cute jokes though.
teaches straight out of the textbook
BEST PROF EVER! I loved Dr. Clive! He made me actually enjoy Organic Chemistry which, trust me, is an accomplishment. He makes it easy to follow along in the textbook and he doesn't assume that you know things that you might not like some other profs. Review sessions are a must to attend. Tests are tricky but not stupid. His accent is the cutest!
The average for first midterm was mid 50's, for second midterm, 49%. FORTY NINE!!. His topics are very simple... but he convolutes the concepts in his midterms and final making them very difficult. He uses reagents not lectured on and has never heard of email or computers. No printed notes. Ended up with A-, but disgruntled.
Clearly a very intelligent man, but- one of the worst prof's I've ever had! His tests were extremely difficult and had almost nothing to do with the lecture material. Review sessions were painfully long and were a complete waste of time. I got a good mark, but I feel like I learned nothing.Do yourself a favour and avoid this man like the plague!
One of the best chemistry professors I've ever had. He doesn't mind making jokes in class and he tries hard to keep students interested. Usually, he spends a lot of time explaining concepts but it's only so he can drive the point home. Exam questions are taken directly from his notes and his review sessions cover everything. He's excellent.
Good prof, review sessions are very helpful... he will tell you exactly what to study. Midterm average was quite high (about 78%) because the exam was easy. He goes off on tangents (you'll become well acquainted with molecular midgets and all the wonders of England) and the pace of the class is a bit slow =bored often. Loves teaching & it shows.
Honestly.Decent prof. However, if you have him, I would worry about taking 263, as he does go pretty slow, & is quite repetitive.I don't think we covered everything we were suppose to for the entire course. 1 distinctive problem with his teaching is how he just jots down ex. after ex. w/out really explaining anything. All the concepts just blend in.
He is a funny man but not a good prof. Very unorganized, just writes down bunch of examples, wastes too much time on Chem 101 stuff. The only reason his class would be worth taking is because of the review sessions which the is the only reason I did well because he told us basically what was on the exam. But overall, theres better profs out there.
Not a very good prof. He doesn't explain any concepts, just puts up examples that make no sense. His notes are attrocious and you NEED to read the textbook to know anything at all. He gives away his midterm, but the average is really high so that's a bust. The final was horrendous. Do not take. xx
Clive does not have online notes, you must go to class to get the notes. He just writes up reactions after reactions on the board and expects you to memorize them. Without a decent explanation or notes this is quite difficult. Attend the review sessions - it will save you on the finals and midterms. His classes are very painful.
He is the most untechnological person you might know. Goes over the easiest, most redundant things in the first part of the course really slowly, but at the last 2-4 weeks he tries to cover the entire course. He only covered about 60% of what?s specified in the syllabus. Don?t take him if you?ll continue with o chem.
Wasted time going over nomenclature and then attempted to cram all useful information into the last bit of the course. Had no online resources, and made it clear that he did not want us coming to him for help (he had no office ours). Waste of time, and now I'm screwed for Chem 263 even with a great prof.
Brutal
No online notes or use of the chemistry website at all, or e-class. How behind were we as a class? Clive had to stop teaching a month and a half before the final due to surgery, and the replacement instructor had to pick up his slack just to get us up the speed on the basics. If this course is a requirement, don't take it with Clive.
BEST ochem prof, made the class laugh every day with his British homour, must attend class to write down his notes which are actually easy to understand if you pay attention and can write reasonably fast. midterm and final straight out of notes, so easier than other profs who give practice problems. dont need textbook.
I thought Clive was a great prof. I'm terrible at chemistry and appreciated that he went through some things slowly. My only complaint is I didn't like his notes. They weren't very well structured. Online notes would have been much better.
Worst notes ever. They are all over the place, and didn't follow the syllabus. They were soo disorganized. However, he will test you EXACTLY on those notes and tells you almost problem-for-problem what will be on the test, so the average was the same as for other classes (69% on MT). He is also very funny, so at least the class was interesting.
Notes are terrible, only reason people pass this class is because he tells you exactly what is going to be on the mt and final during his review sessions.
Worst prof I've had in three years of being at the university. His notes are terrible as is his teaching style. The only thing I took from them were the questions he assigned out of the text to know where he was in the syllabus. Doesn't seem to care about undergrads at all. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS.
Nice and funny guy but those are the only good things bout him. I learned practically nothing from his class, got an A- but learned NOTHING. Hated his class, leaves u anxious and stressed over what the test will be like becoz with his horrible notes or lack thereof u will constantly worry and wait for the day when he actually starts teaching.
The key is to write down what he says, and not just what he writes. His notes were very vague. As long as you did that it was a good and easy class, he was very clear and gave good idea of exam questions.
I would recommend not taking this class with clive. his notes are pretty much useless and I had no idea what he was talking about most of the time. The only good thing is that he tells you exactly whats on the midterm and final on his review sessions so definitely go to those!
I had him for 261, and 263 somehow after trying to avoid him. Beartracks pulled a texas switch on me. He's a genius of a man, no sarcasm, but assumes he can mention something wild and new and you all understand it immediately. He wont write much for notes, and talks rapidly and moves on quickly. Prepare to focus, read that big text too every day
He is a lovely British man with a cute sense of humour. He doesn't use any notes, just the whiteboard, and goes off directly from the textbook but with his own revision. Write fast and prepare to teach yourself from the textbook. His exams are extremely fair (only off what he teaches) and he is very clear on what he says. Awesome prof!
Prepare for endless stress and confusion. What a waste.
Everyone needs to stop complaining about his notes. Youre in university profs dont have to hold your hand anymore. If you cant write that fast go to a different lecture. He does explain things really well, goes straight from the text, and has good review sessions. He frustrates me though like hes funny but I find I want to slap him half of the time
Nice guy but horrible prof. Notes were all over the place- hand written be prepared to speed write. Exams were OK - tells you whats on it. I just did not enjoy reading the textbook all the time. WARNING: DO NOT TAKE HIM! TAKE SOME DIFF PROF I SWEAR!!!!
Funny and a nice person. Notes are from the textbook, and he uses the whiteboard. He has "Super TA" sessions before exams and tells you exactly what's on the exam, like EXACTLY for each question. Don't go to classes, read textbook, attend super TA session, and you'll ace the exams!
Go to class because he has no online notes. The key to doing well is going to class and reading the assigned textbook readings. If you keep up it's not a hard class but really easy to fall behind.
Just awful. I was not a huge organic chem fan going into this class and dislike it even more after the class. He should have retired years ago. Has no idea what technology is.
Hard course but helpful. Attendance mandatory for sure unless other people to take notes from. not posted online.
Absolutely dreadful
Such a bad proof, he is all over the place.
I aced his midterm and still cant stand the guy, averages are high, and he refuses to mention how he is grading the class so you are at a loss for what mark you have....I recommend avoiding at ALL possible costs only thing Ive learn is 'Class I must continue my discussion on the chemistry of organic compounds.."
Terrible at explaining reactions, tests are composed of having to remember over 25 different reactions. Lectures are composed of him writing down these reactions and explaining it too quickly and only verbally. Looking back at your notes becomes a joke. After the second midterm you end up despising organic chem
DO NOT TAKE CHEM WITH THIS PROF!! His lectures are a joke, i feel like i draw the same pictures over and over again every class. It would be helpful if he actually wrote down sentences in his lectures.
He is without a doubt the worst professor over. It's like he forgets that most of us are hearing these concepts for the first time and goes over them extremely fast, with HORRIBLE NOTES and a poor explanation. If your in his class, you better be prepared to learn off of youtube.
His notes are horrible and some portions of the course are very poorly taught, particularly the reactions unit! Spends a lot of time on trivial concepts (ex. naming alkanes) and rushes through difficult parts. He goes off on tangents a lot as well, so class feels slow. Exams averages are high (~75%), because he tells you what's on exams. Avoid.
Painful. Felt like 75% of the course was listening to him “explain” reactions while scrawling messy chemical structures and arrows as “notes” (0 written explanation). I ended up sitting in on Dr.Cairo’s section, and the difference in what was being taught was HUGE. If you take Clive’s class you’re probably screwed for any further ochem courses.
Painful. I am glad I dont have to take more advanced Ochem courses because I would likely be screwed. Spends alot of time on high school ochem review, then speeds through new content with no explanations. Only reason I passed was b/c his practice tests were very similar as actual finals with slight differences. His notes are also impossible to read
The negative feedback concerning Dr. Clive's performance as a professor presented on this site is entirely unwarranted. This man has a passion for organic chemistry and extenuates this passion through every lecture. Perhaps the lectures may not be ideal; however, it is the student who must take the initiative to bridge any gaps, not the professor.
He's got a lot good idea of creating new organic chemistry. Work so hard with his passion. Nice to student!
The professor is a genius, but is pretty unorganized. His exams are almost the same as his practice ones so remember to do them and attend his review session. Read the textbook or watch his online video sessions if you missed a section in your notes. His disorganized notes are fine since he postes his lecture after class. Over all he's a ok prof.
After writing a bad review about doctor Clive I am back to say that I learned a lot more from him than I imagined at the time. Sure he is unorganized but he is brilliant and teaches you the things necessary to be successful in 263 if you are willing to put in the effort, ochem isnt easy the students have to work for it. Overall a very good prof :)
This guy is a actually a good prof once he started posting videos of lectures and if you review his notes the exams are not hard. if you watch the class videos you should get an A. i missed 3 weeks of class and still got an A-. he is also open to suggestions on teaching.
I had Derrick Clive for Chem 261 and he was pretty good. He has pretty scrambled notes, but he provided practise exams with solutions that showed you how to get the right answer. For Chem 263, He is TERRIBLE. His notes are worse than before, he doesnt provide the exams and wont see me when I asked for help. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS.
Clive now posts videos of his lecture notes online, which is very helpful if you missed something in class, which is likely since he goes very fast. It's obvious the man is passionate about what he does and he is very knowledgeable. Difficult class but if you're willing to put the effort in, it'll show. Would recommend Clive if you need to take 263
Painful. Al he did was scribble reactions on an overhead without any explanation. I feel like I learned nothing beyond my knowledge of organic chemistry that I learned in high school. I would consider taking 263, but I know I would screwed because I know nothing. I took this class in Fall 2012, and I hear that he now posts lectures online...
He is a older british man. I enjoyed his stories of his past every now and then in class. He is always clear about what will be on the final, specifically. Going to class is a big help in understanding concepts. However, find a efficient way to take notes. a jumble of structures without any explanation of what is happening is hard to study from.
Smart, funny and kind of awkward sometimes. The kind of old man you'd want as your grandpa. That being said, you wouldnt want your grandpa teaching you ochem. It may be just him (other class did diff stuff) but 263 with clive was pure memorization of 100+ reactions (names & catalysts included). if you cant memorize them all, you're screwed
If you're willing to put in a lot of time into recopying and reorganizing and redoing notes out of the textbook, take him. His notes are so bad that I had to take the textbook every day and rewrite the notes. Tests were very fair, super TA sessions are awesome. Definitely take him if you're willing to sacrifice some time.
Chem 263 is a brutal course in itself, if you walk out with a bad mark it's not because Clive was a bad proffesor. Dr. Clive is brilliant and is very knowledgable in ochem. He is EXTREMELY willing to accommodate to student's needs: he posts online notes, records his lectures, and holds super TA sessions that practically mimic the respective exam.
Clive is a great teacher. Attendance is mandatory in the sense that you must either go to class or watch his videos. Though sometimes the videos don't work so I would go to class. Clive has a sense of humor and will often have breaks where he tells stories. His lectures require you write your own notes so get ready for the hand cramps.
Dr. Clive is a very smart guy with a passion for organic chemistry; he's nice and funny. Videos of lectures are online as well as extra "hand-outs". I appreciate that he provided opportunity to give feedback. The course is difficult; there are MANY reactions. However, you will be successful as long as you stay on top of the work; use the textbook.
He honestly was a good prof. Clive recorded every lecture and his super TA sessions pretty much tell you the test. Yes you have to remember 100+ reactions but thats the class. He doesn't organize it well but he explains it all well. Not super helpful in office hours, but he tried. I didn't understand reactions at all and still did well. Good prof.
You need to go to his classes because his tests are just whatever he decides. He basically tells you what's going to be on the test but they're REALLY hard. The first midterm less than 25 percent of people actually finished the test.
As much as people say he is disorganized, his passion for synthetic organic chemistry was what pushed me to pursue a degree in Chemistry. He knows his material perfectly and really challenges his students in his Exams. You cannot cram for his exams since you need practice in synthetic questions and NMR. Recommend taking him.
Must go to his lectures since he hand writes the notes. He does post them online afterwards with sound but they are not reliable. He is really funny and talks at an appropriate pace. He tells you what's on the exams so they're hard. My A- was because I aced the first midterm since it was too long for most people to finish. Hard class overall tho.
Professor Clive is incredibly brilliant, as a biochemist. He's probably one of the best chemists alive. However, he knows chemistry, not education. From an education standpoint, this class is abominable. He's terrible at setting expectations, making it clear what part is important to remember, and so forth. Inspirational in his passion, though.
Clive's an old Brit, and his humour is top-notch. Recorded lectures make it easy to skip. If you see him during office hours, he's very willing to help. What's nice is that he'll host Super TA sessions where he describes the exams to you, but you still need to memorize an abominable amount of reactions and some mechanisms. NOT easy.
Chem 263 is known to be a terrible class. There are easily 100 or more reactions that need to be known, along with multiple mechanisms. Clive is good at explaining the material but, the amount of material required is insane. 2 written midterms and a final (plus lab of course). Do good on the midterms and you'll be fine. Final was insanely difficult
In his lecture, you have to copy his written notes but they would be uploaded on eclass. Better purchase the textbook as his notes examples are same as the textbook and he would select questions from the book as assignments. His supper TA section is a tip class as he would tell you what types of questions would appear in the exam
Course itself is hell and he does not provide any explanation or 'skeleton notes' to go with the lectures. He writes quickly and his writings are difficult to interpret and understand. Tests are difficult and you WILL need to know material from 261. This course made me lose all of my interest in organic chemistry and will not pursue this subject.
I actually like Derrick Clive a lot but He has REALLY messy notes and does a terrible job of answering questions. The tests are fair though. Also from my experience with ochem profs their really stubborn and sort of set in their ways and Clive isn't different. Also, I think he secretly finds us insufferable. but LUCKY to have taken 263 with him.
Ochem is not that hard. Its overwhelming because theres 100+ reactions to know, but Clives super TA sessions really narrow down what to study. His writing is disgusting but he is super kind and SO inspirational, & if u figure out that he follows the textbook word for word early enough, you're set. I'm expecting an A+.
Don't listen to anyone that says 263 is hard, its not at all. Clive is so inspirational and genius, if it had been anyone else, I wouldn't have gotten an A+. His TA sessions are amazing, he tells you what will be on his exams exactly. Two midterms and a final, all super easy. Just memorize the reactions, PRACTICE LOTS, and befriend the textbook.
Clive takes a week or two to adjust to because he does things his way, and initially it may freak you out. However, his tests are ridiculously easy if you keep up regularly with the material. With 263, the course isn't hard, there is just a lot of info you need to know. Study regularly and you'll do amazing.
Dr. Clive is great professor for this class since it is not a very easy course to take in the first place. He does have a British accent as well as a not so clear style of hand writing so some of the lectures can be frustrating since there is over 100 reactions to memorize, luckily he posts all his notes online. Very passionate about his field.
Clive is one of your OKAY professors. His british accent and jokes about his Imperial Institute of Technology crack a smile. His lectures are important. He talks about concepts which are important and does not write the content but just the heading. So make sure you follow through and note everything.
He is this cute old British Lad that tells you exactly what's on the exam a day before. His notes are awful though and his handwriting is worse so you have to go to class. But his explanations are so straightforward, you will love him!
Dr. Clive was really great for CHEM 261, very old school with just a piece of paper and a projector, so be prepared to take notes and read the textbook. He goes over exactly what is expected for the exams and I hope to have him as a prof again. Super funny and very respected both by students and the chemistry community.
Dr. Clive's a good prof, he's always cracking jokes and the material is actually neat. He writes notes by hand which are super messy and can be difficult to follow (he does post his notes one class though). Clive does a huge review session before the midterm and the final which are incredibly helpful. Definitely would recommend as a prof.
He's super nice and caring. I found his writing to be pretty good actually (there are some abbreviations that you'll get used to). Studying for tests can feel kinda weird b/c notes seem scattered. Class averages are pretty low so that really helps the letter grade situation. The review session was not helpful to me personally.
Derrick Clive is my favourite professor so far, he's a sweet old Englishman who likes to tell stories in lecture which makes the topic less boring. He had 1 midterm, 1 lecture final and 1 lab final, no lecture quizzes but there were lab quizzes. Be prepared to come to every class because he talks more than he writes down. No slides, all writing.
I stopped going to Clives class after the midterm and went to another prof as I could not follow his terribly organized lectures. Do not bother going to class. Watch YouTube videos on reactions and go to another class. The review sessions are helpful and there is a very low curve, I dont even think I passed the final and I ended with an A-
Horrible class, he has messy notes that have no correlation to the material, without the text book I would have failed, he is no help. Only redeeming factor is that his tests are identical to his practice tests.
The notes don't make any sense, even on the rare occasion that he does write a word down it's impossible to read half the time. He is a nice guy but has the worst handwriting that I have ever seen. Doesn't always give enough time to copy out his notes either but they are posted on eclass. You mostly have to learn stuff from the textbook.
Worst prof I have ever taken. Has the worst handwriting, putting a dog in the front would probably teach better. Doesn't explain anything and just writes bunch of reactions down with his incomprehensible handwriting. Honestly if you have a choice don't take him, I am only taking him because he is the ONLY prof teaching 263 this semester,
Dr. Clive had a bad rep, but I really came to like him throughout the semester. His notes are a little messy, but he ONLY tests on what's on his notes, and his exams are decently straightforward. He also has a great sense of humour which makes lectures enjoyable. I did find going through the textbook chapter after each lecture very helpful.
Dr. Clive is a pretty solid prof for 263 because his exams are very fair, and they are based on his practice exams. Also, his teaching is straightforward and easy to understand.
Derrick Clive is a nice man, but an AWFUL prof. He does not explain concepts at all and "teaches" the class by writing down equation after equation (at lightning speed) in his brutal handwriting. It is nice that he uploads his notes after class, but good luck reading them! He really needs to switch up his teaching methods
This professor is quite awful. Be prepared to be confused by his messy handwriting and how quickly he he moves through the reactions. The only details in his notes said reactions and they're barely comprehensible. When it came time for exams, I was unsure what material to be studying, despite his pre-exam review sessions.
While his notes are confusing if you don't attend lectures, they tell you exactly what you need to memorize for exams. Preread the textbook and write down reactions from there, also make your own notes! He doesn't get into the nitty gritty and really only tells you what you have to memorize. Easy A if you're organized.
His lectures are a mess, they go quickly and are hard to follow. He provides little to no definitions and meanings and just writes a bunch of reactions down. His exams are difficult and much harder than practice the material. He does not give any problem sets. Barely communicates with students.
Get ready to self-teach yourself the entire course. There's no discussion board, no office hours, no pre-lecture notes, nothing other than the weekly recorded lectures, which is consist of Dr Clive's hand writing mechanisms on paper for 50 minutes. The class is stressful but do-able, just know the the textbook and google are your true profs.
Dr. Clives lectures tell you what exactly you need to know for the exams, which are fair if you did enough practice and rewind the lecture videos to study. Responds very quickly to email.
CHEM263 was the worst course I've taken and Dr. Clive did NOT make it any better. His notes (if you can even call them that) were just scribbles of his thought process with no clear structure or form to it. It was impossible to use the notes to review material cuz they made absolutely no sense by themselves. Rough exams. Would not recommend.
Despite getting a B- with him, I truly believe that Dr. Clive is a great prof. I had bad mental health stuff going on in the semester and ended up missing every exam in CHEM 265, but each time Dr. Clive was understanding and willing to transfer the weights. He also replies in minutes to emails, once at 4AM! He even recorded lectures in the hospital
Do not ever take a class with Clive. He has an OK rating and I don't understand why. His class is incredibly unorganized. He begins each class on a blank sheet of printer paper. Barely answers questions, very much ignoring students hands up. He's rude often and makes exams incredibly difficult. You're really paying $600 to teach yourself Ochem
Although I disliked Dr. Clive's lectures, I believe his exams make up for it. He sets you up for success by telling you exactly what you need to know on the exam. Know and memorize his super TA notes and there is no reason you won't get a good mark. He doesn't notice raised hands in class so you need to speak up. Very kind during office hours!
Dr. Clive's method of teaching was just writing on a piece of paper and drawing structures and mechanisms without any words. Everything he teaches is almost purely verbal and his writing is quite messy. I probably wouldn't take a class w him ever again but he is kinda funny. Also the labs were fun too
Rated 2 instead of 1 only because he tells you exactly what you need to know for exams in super TA sessions. I studied directly from those notes and that's how I pulled off an A. Nothing wrong with "old school" blank paper and pen teaching, but the notes were impossible to study from. Textbook is an absolute must as you will be teaching yourself.
This was the last chem course I had to take for my degree, so Clive was perfect. He tells you exactly what he's testing on the exams at super TA sessions. I memorized ONLY the reactions he wrote during these sessions and I pulled off an A+. If you want to understand ochem, he is NOT IT. But if you're looking for an A, he's the man
Dr. Clive as a prof felt very conflicting. He is very knowledgeable but because of that does not explain the content in depth. I really recommend reading the textbook before in-person lecture otherwise it is quite confusing. The super TA sessions are AMAZING, he tells you exactly what to review and relieves a lot of stress
His class was confusing overall. He says so many stuff in lectures that isnt even testable. His handwriting is so bad. Be prepared to take notes from scratch because he doesn't even have lecture slides. The good thing is, he tells you what's going to be on the exam. Just study those and you can pull off a decent grade.
if you can. just avoid. writes a bunch of reactions on paper with not much direction. textbook will be your bff if you want to teach yourself Ochem.
Great professor who is clearly knowledgeable of the subject. Very straightforward exams. Study outside of lecture and read the textbook and it's easy to get a good mark!
This professor's lecture notes are unorganized but with some good note-taking, it's not unbearable. However, what's concerning is the lack of practice questions. He does give some textbook questions however the answers to those questions are sometimes not there. The super TA sessions before each midterm are absolutely necessary to attend.
Such a frustrating class. Super unorganized notes- attendance is an absolute must. He is not very good with technology, making online class with him even worse.
He has the worst lectures of any prof I've ever encountered. His lectures lack any organization at all and it seems like he just starts talking about the first thing that comes to mind. He will not even write what it is he is talking about just some useless scribbles which can already be hard to read. Terrible, DO NOT TAKE a class with him.
I really enjoyed this class. Some students think his lectures are unorganized, but that depends on how well you can take notes on what someone is saying. He teaches things the exact same way you are asked about them on exams. It's easy to miss some explanations because a lot of what he teaches is verbal, so going to office hours helps a ton.
If you do not attend class, you will fail. As cool as a guy he is I cannot openly recommend him. There are no tests or assignments to keep you accountable. The only saving grace is that his midterms and finals follow the EXACT same formula year to year and test to test so do the practice tests and you'll be fine. Take your own notes cause his suck.
His notes were messy and hard to follow. He went too fast during lectures and didn't teach much (he showed the reactions for you to copy down). You mostly have to memorize the material instead of understanding it. His practice tests and tests were fair. Extremely test heavy, there were no other assessments. He was kind and funny during lectures.
Clive is a hit or miss prof; either he really works for you or he really doesn't. He teaches by writing all of his notes on a piece of paper with an overhead projector. No skeleton notes. Found it very hard to follow, especially if you missed even one lecture. Go to his class, if you don't like the style, drop the course.
Dr. Clive is such a nice guy, I was one of the only people at his office hours and he was amazing. The content of this class was really hard, but he tested exactly what you would expect him to and he essentially tells you what the questions will be in his Super TA sessions. Would 100% take another class with him, super great guy
His super TA sessions are very helpful for exams and pretty much tells you what you need to study for the exam, he is nice and caring, its a hard class overall but if you study you will be fine.
This prof's notes were illegible, messy, and unorganized. He has no pre-set notes or practice questions. It was very difficult to follow along with his class. He said to ask questions, but when you did, he made you feel really bad and like you should know the answer already. He tested heavily on things he barely taught us or mentioned only once.
He teaches as though it's a review session for things we already know. No pre-lecture notes or slides, we don't even know what the next lecture will be on because the syllabus topics aren't in order. His only redeeming quality is that the exams are basically identical to the practice exams he posts. His super TA sessions are essential to do well.
Pay close attention in lectures. Prof. Clive does not make digital notes and only makes handwritten notes with hard to read handwriting. You'll have to do a lot more studying outside of your lectures compared to a regular class.
Very funny. Exams are generally straightforward as he gives practice tests that are similar to the actual exam. Replies to emails quickly. I would recommend consulting supplementary material for NMR. The class itself is very difficult so time and effort will need to be put in in order to do well - especially for the enormous amount of mechanisms.
D. Clive is the best organic chemistry professor if you know what you are doing. His handwriting might be a bit messy but he will post his notes on e-class so it's not a big deal. His exam is almost exactly what the practice exam was. His lecture is very fun and he is humor. Really recommend to take his class and attend to Super TA session.
Dr Clive was a fun person, but incredibly difficult as a professor. He teaches via examples but often skips explaining the relevance and what we should take from the examples. He also teaches concepts in an order that does not make sense and often requires being confused for a few weeks until he teaches the rest of the topic. His exams are fair.
Cool guy, bad prof. Taught myself basically everything bc he usually makes no sense & explains things in the most confusing way possible. Truly does teach as if its a review, even tho its brand new information. Avoid him unless u are 100% okay with teaching urself EVERYTHING through youtube because the textbook doesn't have some of what he covers.
The only lectures that are not worth going to! You are better off just teaching everything to yourself, I am always confused during most lectures, and I pretty much relied on YouTube videos and the textbook to teach me most mechanisms. His notes are messy, and he goes over every example insanely fast. But his exams are very similar to the practice.
Lectures are unrecorded and his writing is extremely messy. He draws more diagrams than actual notes, so you have to be there to understand concepts, and his definitions are not straight forward. His super TA videos are a must-watch before exams, but otherwise use the textbook and youtube videos. He also includes some concepts not from the textbook
The lectures can be confusing, but the super TA sessions are a must-watch. Supplementing with the textbook, YouTube videos, and unstuck AI helps grasp the concepts. Overall, a challenging but manageable class if you put in the effort.
The lectures can get superrrr confusing but the super TA sessions are pretty good. Plus the practice are pretty close to the actual tests
Only handwritten notes, which he only writes reactions rather than actual notes explaining whats going on. Lessons are very confusing. Mostly taught myself online with youtube and the textbook. But he also doesnt follow the textbook too much, it jumps all over.
Going to lectures is useless. Like other comments, the Super TA videos are a requirement, just study that and actually learn the concepts from youtube or the textbook; his descriptions and definitions are abstract and don't make sense. His practice exams are close to the actual exam. His notes are also handwritten and sometimes illegible.
He was very average. He is a very accomplished professor, but his teaching styles are difficult to follow. Has review videos before each test, and the practice finals are excellent practice, but I found having a tutor was a huge benefit for me. All notes are handwritten and all over the place. Lectures are not recorded so attendance is important.
If you have this man as your Prof and you have to take another ochem, run!!! His exams are basically identical to the practice so it is not hard but he does not explain anything or actually teach, he just does stuff without showing why, so if you have to take chem263 or whatever you won't know any of the basics and will have an awful time.
I LOVE DJ CLIVE. Do not take ochem with any other prof unless you hate yourself. Clive is the perfect prof if you want an A in ochem without learning a single thing about the class. If you have him for 261 and have a different prof for 263 you're so screwed but I love him so much so take 263 with him too. Also I hate Jeffrey Stryker.
I LOVE CLIVE! I got 30% on my midterm with a different and dropped the class, but now I'm thriving with Clive! Clive is perfect because his tests are on things actually things taught in lectures, and they are basically identical to the practice. SAVE YOURSELF do not take Ochem with ANY OTHER PROF!!!!!!!!!
He only does hand written notes, and his hand writing isn't always the best and sometimes are very hard to read. He also goes really fast when drawing mechanisms and never explains what he is teaching. He also loves going off the textbook and basically forces you to buy one in order to understand what he is teaching.
This guy is horrible, he does not teach anything and anything he does mention in lectures he does not even explain. He talks about reactions and give absolutely no explanation on how they work, and just expects you to know it for the exam. Any other ochem prof would be better than him you better run away from him
His handwritten notes are so vague and confusing. I just studied from textbook for all the lecture contents. Not up to the University Standards, his mechanisms and handwriting doesn't make any sense. He must be retired now!!
Highly recommend just attending his lecture and keeping up with assigned textbook problems/Super TA's/Practice Exams. His notes aren't as illegible as most reviews say, but having a grasp on what he's talking about definitely helps (you can also ask him for clarification). His sense of humour is very dry which I found very funny.
He has ZERO typed out notes and handwrites them ALL in class. His notes aren't even full sentences because he spends majority of the class talking (about things that aren't part of the syllabus or just extra info we don't need to know). His handwriting isn't nice so sometimes the notes aren't even eligible. Seems like a nice guy but not as a prof.
Miserable class. take any other ochem prof if you can. Frequently goes off topic and is incredibly frustrating to learn from. you're expected to memorize a plethora of reaction mechanisms without learning how they really work UNTIL the end of the year. boggles my mind, avoid him at all costs
He cannot teach. It's not that he doesn't know what he's doing; he just doesn't explain it to the class at all. He handwrites all of the notes you need to know, which is basically chicken scratch. He will not give any theory or background information; he will just write down 100 different random reactions and expect you to know what's happening.
Genuinely the worst professor I have ever had, I would purposely not look both ways before crossing hoping I would get hit just so I didn't have to attend his lecture. You cant read his writing, he DOESNT HAVE NOTES. He messes up in class, which is super confusing. Don't listen to a single good review trust. If I could give him a 0 I would.
He doesn't tell you the name of half of the reactions he teaches, and the notes he posts are basically just reactions with 0 explanation. Whether you attend or miss lectures you're cooked. The only thing he should get credit for is that his practice exams are the same as the actual ones. But you basically have to teach yourself everything.
Whether you attend class or not, it almost doesn't even matter because you need to copy what he is writing, which leaves very little time to hear and understand what he is saying. I relied on the internet and the textbook to teach myself. His notes are just random reactions that he expects you to know and piece together from previous material.
Ignore all the bots that are giving 5/5. They are suffering from Stockholm's. Every class is hand written, both his notes, and your notes. Every exam has multiple questions asking for the structure of a given specific name. Absolutely pointless knowledge. The lectures are all over the place, and doesn't ever make sense unless you relearn it again.
Amazing prof, style of teaching may not be for everyone. Yes you have to do some work to understand the material outside of class, that's organic chemistry. Very accessible, and is great at explaining mechanisms in office hours if you don't understand them.
you have to study on your own, he is overqualified for this role. His practice exams, and super TA videos are a nice touch.
Is very old and slow-talking but knows his stuff. Doesn't have pre-made slides; instead writes notes by hand and talks aloud. He posts them afterwards, but attendance is still HIGHLY recommended. Questions on midterms are often 2 marks, but you can't get 0.5 marks. Buy a molecular model kit, as you can take it into all lecture exams with you!!!
