Derrick is a great teacher and applies philosophy in an interesting, real-time type of way. If you can tune out your annoying babbling classmates (wanna-be philosophers)its a great class! Only 2 exams, in which study guides are provided. You will have weekly essays, but they are easy and help bring up your grade. He also gives a lot of extra cred
Derrick is a great teacher! He keeps the class interesting because of his enthusiasm. He cracks jokes often witch makes class fun. He is also VERY easy on the eyes and that's always a plus. The best advice I can give for his class is to DO THE READINGS, if so you will do great. I highly recommend his class. A+
Incredibly good professor. Changes the way you'll look at life. For a community college, it's probably difficult reading, but he goes over everything, and if you pay attention, you don't even really have to do it.
Lots of reading, but it is fun. Weekly assignments, but only 2 tests mid-term and final, couple of quizzes and that's it. Derrick make the subject and class fun. You will have smile on your face the whole time for sure. Loved it !!
Derrick is great. Fun class environment. Easy going, and not strict. Easy grading; pay attention do some homework, and you should do well. Attendance is of course 'mandatory', but he's pretty flexible.
Great Teacher. Easy class not much homework at all. EASY A CLASS
This was a great class, great teacher. He gives weekly essays,hw,quizzes, he provides study guides. As long as you do the work assigned and pay attention you will make an A
He is a Best.I will never forget this instructor.Very help full.
Awesome teacher. Gives MORE than enough time to complete assignments. Very fair in grading assignments. Took his online course, but seems VERY nice in regards to email/discussion board. Highly suggest taking one of his classes!
I took hybrid class. Lots of reading, very interesting and useful. I liked the class. If you understand the concept an easy A. You will not get bored in his class.
Knows his stuff, knows how to convey it in a clear and interesting manor. Generally fun class, not too hard either. :)
He is an excellent, organized professor who is so enthusiastic about his topic and puts a lot of effort into the class I enjoyed the PowerPoints and videos he prepared for class. He is also very helpful and responds promptly to any inquiry. He was so encouraging made the class fun and useful for everyday life. One of my favorite professors!
Interesting teacher. If you do your work its an easy A
Enjoyed the class with Mr. Nantz. He adds a little humor to it which makes it more enjoyable. If I have one criticism it's that he can be a bit slow at grading assignments. Otherwise I definitely recommend taking a class with him. He's a lenient grader so as long as you do the work it's hard not to pass.
Tests are much much harder than expected! This is not a free A as others have posted.
Awesome teacher! Very enthusiastic and was a easy A as long as you do the work. The work was always enjoyable though. Highly would recommend professor Nantz!
5 week class online.Very disorganized matl, too many typos to take him seriously. How Mr. Nantz is viewed as a great teacher is beyond me.My ideas of a Critical Thinking class are WAY different than WTCC...this is clearly a phy/psy class. His video lectures are terrible!I have waited over 48 hrs for an email response to questions. Not cool!
The most boring class I have ever taken! A lot of work required for an electiveoptional class. Tons of homework, and the tests are very hard and confusing, I left thinking I had an A and got a C. Do not recommend.
I am taking Hum 110 online and I really like him as a teacher. He seems very laid back, and the assignments are very clear. Very few quizzes, but there are A LOT of short answer assignments and readings. Boring class, but just take the time to read and you will make an A!
Pretty good and helpful teacher. Take him!!!
I took Mr. Nantz Critical Thinking class also. Mr. Nantz gives material to read that makes the class more interesting. I thought this class was gonna be a snooze fest but he made some of it funny and interesting. I love his classes and would recommend to anyone who needs to take the class.
I took his Critical Thinking class, he made it interesting and was easy to understand. Gave study guides for test which were very helpful. Gave reasonable amount of assignments and time to complete it. Test we easy as long as you do your study guides... DO THE STUDY GUIDES! hint hint. Very good looking as well.
Great Teacher, This was a hybrid course 12 in class 12 online. He is so nice and funny. The subject is a little hard but the way he teaches it is to insure you understand it in normal terms. If I can take him for any other class I will Hands Down. You will love him.
This class was very easy but it was also very boring. I took it as an online class and Mr. Nantz would post lectures and he would ramble on for an hour, sometimes longer. I literally do not feel like I gained anything at all from this class other than to waste five weeks of my summer. Textbook was not even used
Derrick is an incredible professor who truly cares about his students and their education. His classes are very simple and focus mainly on concept retention. There are only two tests (midterm & final) with a single project of some kind. He is very understanding and the best kind of professor. I've taken every class he has to offer (3 classes).
I have absolutely loved this instructor this semester. The only thing I have to complain about is he takes a while to get grades back, but definitely not a set back for taking the class. I would highly recommend taking him if you need this course. I usually do not have an interest in this subject but Mr. Nantz has made me love it!
Took his online Humanities class (Technology & Society) after positive reviews (did Mr. Nantz create them?) Weekly assignments consist of a chapter from text, minimum of one or two 30m videos, an extra 40-50 pages supplementary reading from a book (published in the 80's) he scans (bad scan quality). Tests + exams include all non-syllabus materials
Not my favorite professor Wake Tech has to offer. He sends out an e-mail about proper email etiquette yet he does not even follow it when he reply's to email (if at all). Not the best online teacher, and I love online classes since I did online homeschool.
I took his intro to ethics class for the first 3 weeks online and withdrew. In a email he wrote back to me on an assignment i messed up on because he has a typo in his instructions basically said I was stupid did not use that word but that is how he made me feel. Horrible SHOULD NOT BE A TEACHER!!!!
Lots of reading, though very little in the book purchased (though it's a cheap book). Took a while to respond via email. He did however give credit when I challenged a couple questions on quizzes/tests (to see why I got them wrong, but apparently I didn't? Never got a response, but grade was raised). I took him online. Interesting material.
He's grading criteria is very vague.
Very good professor, makes the class very fun and tries to apply the concepts to real life. You do have to study a little extra for quizzes but they are not hard if you try. Would take his class again
Get ready to read.
Great class and very cool about assignments. Best class i've taken.
I took my PHI 150 class with Mr. Nantz online. He is a great teacher and a great friend as well. He do not only cares about your learning process, but also cares about your academic success in other classes and in college. I enjoyed his class. Do not forget, Philosophy is not an easy class. You should not blame your instructor if you did poorly.
What to expect: Week 1- dry Week 2-dry but starting to make sense Week 3-getting good information that will be helpful in life Week 4 and on-still getting good information that will be helpful in life and how to apply it in life It is a good course! I learned a lot of helpful information. He is a fair grader, but you must study for the tests!
Mr. Nantz is really great at giving good feedback needed. Just make sure you read and actually write your thoughts in the assignment and you'll get an good grade! I would say easy A but just keep up with the reading and do the work and you'll definitely get an A!
I took PHI 240 online this summer. All of the assignments were easy to follow and very straightforward, if you put the effort you will definitely get a good grade. However, this professor never answered any of my emails, took forever to grade (until last week of class), and never sent out any informational emails about what to expect for the week.
Definitely learned a lot from this class. Easy to get an A, IF you read all of the articles he posts. NO major assignments, but quizzes are important. He really makes you think about things that matter.
I got PHI 240 online. Be organized. First, read power points, then others. Take notes, otherwise you'll forget. Find related videos on each subject in YouTube, it makes lessons easy understanding and fun. There was "short answer question homework" and "discussion board" for each week. 3 quiz and final, all multiple choice. Final was harder.
Teacher gives blanket feedback for the online class that is useless. This class and its teacher and content is very dry online, hardly any interaction.
Mr Nantz was a good teacher. I had him for online Ethics class. The quizzes were pretty easy, basically all the answers could be found in Quizlet. The midterm was the same. The final was a shocker - none of the answers on mine were to found in Quizlet. The ONLY complaint I have on him is how long it takes for him to grade- maybe he has a life!!!!!!
Derrick was my favorite teacher this semester. He is truly passionate about what he teaches. I took his Econ- Capitalism and the Global Economy class at UNCW. Learned so freaking much and would recommend him to anyone. He is super down the earth. There were times when I had asked to submit homework late, no problem by him. Love Derrick!
I took this class online. You have to read like a book a week to even get an idea for the weekly assignment. The exam WAS not on Quizlet which is really mean of him when the quiz and midterm where online. His quizzes are extremely hard and so was the midterm, and especially the final exam. Take another teacher that's not a try hard.
Has to be the most try hard online teacher ever. You actually have to read an actual book, 25 pages, almost every week to get an idea for the assignments. The quizzes, midterm are extremely hard and impossible to pass without Quizlet. ALSO, the final exam wasn't online, so good luck failing. Trust me, you don't want him as an online prof.
He was a funny, engaging teacher. His lessons were really interesting, and he encouraged class discussion. I learned a lot from the Critical Thinking class. If you took good notes and paid attention to his lectures, you were sure to get an A, which I did. He encouraged us to ask questions, and it was a really fun class.
One of the hard subject ethics was for me.. but professor Nantz made it relaible and easy to understand. Very easy grader if u follow his given instructions and rubric. Do read PowerPoints and all the help full notes. This class won't be hard if u sturgle in writing instead it will make u the best. Just have to read alot for sure.
If you don't like writing, this is not the right course for you. I wrote more words combined in this class than in the semester I took English. As far as engagement goes, this professor is average. He has a YouTube channel with a few lectures, but he is absent on the weekly discussion board. The material itself was intriguing and thought-provoking.
Only five weeks into this online class at UNCW and I have yet to receive even one email from him, even an instructional email on the first day of class. His online modules are extremely difficult to understand and provied almost no explanation on subjects. The quizessIMPOSSIBLE as the true and false questions are opinion-based questions. HORRIBLE.
Dont take his class (online). Trust me lol. I am 2 months into his class and he has graded probably 4 out of 10 assignments. If you like feedback from your teacher you wont find it here. He seems to not really care about his students. Maybe hes too busy, idk. Shouldnt teach in my opinion.
my grade so far is good, but the class itself isn't. the entire class is basically just reading assignments (lots) and he takes forever to grade. class started off remotely enjoyable with actual thought provoking writing prompts, but quickly became what felt like just busy work. tests and quizzes are difficult, but can SOMETIMES be found on quizlit
I had a good time taking Professor Nantz online for the Fall of 2020. You will have his support every step of the way. Since I took him online, I would recommend reading the summaries first, followed by the power point, and finally the book chapters so that you can best understand step by step on what is going on. I would recommend to take him.
Love Mr. Nantz! Made Philosophy easy to understand and fun
This class is fairly easy as long as you answer the questions thoroughly and read the articles posted. He takes a while to grade your assignments, however, he does give feedback in the comments. I recommend this professor.
Take class if you want to learn all about greek philosophy and read millions of pages along with short answers AND discussion questions each week.
There are quite a lot of readings each week, and these readings can be quite challenging as you have to analyze and interpret the most random stuff. The quizzes are almost impossible to get an A on. However, there are quizlets for some of the quizzes. All the writing assignments are a guaranteed A, as long as you make a little bit of sense.
He doesnt really grade anything if you are taking online courses. He pretty much just gives you a 100 if you do what is asked and follow all guidelines. Overall a lazy teacher and a good class if you want an easy A.
Honestly I was really looking forward to this class, but it sucked. The subject matter is great but my teacher made it awful. Every class was all lecture and he HATES it if you raise your hand to contribute or ask questions. He also only graded 2 of my assignments the whole 5 months. Assigns a crap ton of reading, but the homework isn't that hard.
Professor Nantz was nice, but was extremely slow to grade and give feedback. Get ready for tons of weekly reading to include short answer assignments. Wasn't a bad class, just mediocre. I thought it would be more interesting. The last two weeks were the best as that is when you get into actual ethics. Professor Nantz loves Greek philosophy!
Mr. Nantz is very passionate about what the teaches. If you do your work and try your best, you should come out with a good grade. He is respectful and a fair grader.
Didn't get any feedback until the last minute and he wasn't very responsive over email. We didn't need the book for the summer section, which nobody knew until after we'd all started the class. We had to read 20-40 pages weekly, watch video lectures, and supplement that with other materials just to do the mini essays and discussion boards.
There is a lot of reading in the class and a lot of essays.
I was excited for ethics but he made the course dreadful. Short answer assignments almost every week and weekly discussion boards. Readings for short answer assignments are very long and multiple documents. Take this course if you don't mind spending hours reading every week.
Professor Nantz is a great Ethics teacher. He posted videos of discussions for the earlier chapters as its hard to understand some of the Socratic readings. Lots of interesting things to discuss and write about. Expect a writing assignment OR two every week. As long as you read and clarify your position in your papers its an easy A.
If you like to write papers every week and read long passages, he is the professor for you! Does not update grades fast enough since he assigns so many papers and discussion boards. Grading is easy though. I don't even know if he reads every single paper we write.
This professor was absolutely horrid. He never grades in a timely manner, and when he does it is usually a month or two after you submitted the assignments. Even after the class ended took him around a week or more to finish grading.
Mr. Nantz was probably one of the easiest professors I had. His grading criteria was very suttle and understanding. As long as you complete work in his class then you get an A. Each week all he assigns are discussion boards and a mini-essay to complete. Sometimes it's one over the other. Overall, I really suggest taking PHI 240 with Mr. Nantz.
Good and he gives good feedback. He just takes a month + to grade assignments like discussion boards. Would recommend.
Nantz is the best professor I have ever taken. If you put the effort into his assignments you will get a good grade. His lectures are really enjoyable and he is open to talk, as long as you don't ask dumb questions. Great class.
Really awesome professor.
For PHI240 online every week we had either a DB or short answer assi, sometimes both. Lots, lots, lots of reading, but this is philosophy after all. Prof Nantz does take 1 month+ to grade assignments, so get ready to wait. His recorded lectures are pretty cool and really help understand the material, definitely take the time to watch them.
In his defense, he just had a child, but some things were rough to deal with. First off, he was a little rude in emails, he told me that I was asking questions that I could find on my own, but the info was never posted. As well, he never truly answered questions when emailed. All grades were given very last minute, so dropping is impossible.
He takes a long time to grade and he is VERY rude in emails. He doesnt address questions asked and gives unclear instructions.
Not a fun class. It is philosophy but not as easy for beginners as I thought it would be. He makes you write A LOT so be prepared.
He wasnt a bad Prof, the class was very easy but it was too much reading. The texts were long and boring. He gives out one page essays almost every week and would rotate it with a discussion board. Some weeks it would be both. TBH I would just skim through the readings and I still passed with an A
Takes forever to send back grades, and good luck getting him to actually email back. Took the class online/asynchronous and have never been less engaged in a class in my whole life. You definitely can kind of half-heartedly do this class and get an A. As far as quizzes and exams nothing in the class is proctored-- I'll leave it at that.
Very understanding and grades well. Gives feedback. Would 11/10 recommend him. Currently looking for another class of his that I can attend.
Great professor. Gives good feeback. you don't have try hard in order to get an A. Everything is subjective, so you can give almost any answer to the short-answer and discussion board assignments (which are the bulk of the class) without much fear of getting points knocked off. As long as you don't give one sentence answers, you'll get an A. Easy A
Derrick is not awful like a lot of these ratings seem to indicate. I will say that this was one of the more average classes I've had, but it had more to do with the content than Derrick himself, as it is hard to generate interest in humanities in general. He has a lot of enthusiasm for his teaching, and he has a lot of interesting stories to tell.
Gives good feedback.
Nice guy, has enthusiasm for the subject. Not powerpoint heavy at all and tends to just tell all the information verbally and write things out on the board. Grades pretty late, did not get majority of grades back till last week of the semester. I enjoyed learning in the class though. Interesting class.
Good class, and Derrick is good too the only reason I couldn't justify a 5 is because he didn't grade anything until the last week, I had no idea as to how I was doing until the end. Still landed on an A but was sweating bullets till the end. Be ready to read a lot and write a lot.
Was very easy to understand, looked forward this this class. Was my favorite that semester. The work load is pretty simple too, if u keep up with it, it should be a breeze. I recommend taking him. He explained so well that I aced every test.
This guy is passionate about what he does, and he'll show it to you. The philosophy readings were always really cool and this class is super worth it. Pay attention to the readings and you'll do fine! The papers were simple and were just your thoughts and reflection
Pretty heavy reading every week. Not a super difficult grader on weekly assignments but the tests are difficult. Tests have web cam requirement and are a large portion of your final grade.
Awesome professor. Lots of philosophy/ethics-related readings, all still being very manageable if you time everything right. Weekly writings and bi-weekly quizzes on the material being covered were a great way to solidify material. Would highly recommend taking his class if you have the option to.
I honestly think this man is dead. Today is 4/13, and he has papers all the way from 2/11 that have not been graded. Like where is he? My grade could change drastically the moment he starts grading. Is this what Wake Tech is paying you for? to not grade papers or provide any feedback until the course is over? I'm reporting him. This is unbelievable
He's a nice guy but I would never take him again. The class was easy but it was incredibly frustrating to not get any grades back until the last second. It's stressful not knowing how you're doing on papers with no opportunity for feedback. Overall, the actual class wasn't bad if you find summaries of the readings.
He's a good professor that cares a lot about his students he just has a tough course load. Every week you have a discussion board and short answer assignment (one page) and a lot of reading. The only tough part about this class was the amount of reading that had to be completed each week. His midterm and final are also through a lockdown browser.
Professor Nantz is probably the best ethics teacher out there. He checks for AI, and has lockdown browser for his exams. Other than that, the class was really easy: graded off of discussion and simple one-pagers that he grades very leniently on.
Prof Nantz was great. Very easy grader. As long as you write intelligently with good grammar, you will get an A in his class. Weekly work consists of writing a 3-7 paragraphs. That's it. I only had 2 quizzes during the semester. No tests besides the final. I took the course in 8 weeks over the summer and was not difficult or strenuous at all.
Great guy, no problems with him at all
Professor Nantz is great! In PHI 240 there is a lot of reading but he goes over the readings and explains them well. Quizzes aren't too bad, if you pay attention you'll do just fine. He's really nice and funny. Not a tough grader. If you need a PHI course, definitely take it with Professor Natnz!
I recommend this instructor/course for those who just need another gen ed. Sure, Prof. Nantz has bad grammar, is not techy, and has boring lectures, but this is a super easy class. I also learned a lot and found the content to be fascinating. Also a plus, you get a full Thanksgiving Break, and there are no large projects or papers! Just take it!
Professor Nantz is passionate about philosophy. The readings are manageable with good time management. Assignments are straightforward, though exams can be challenging. unstuck AI helped me stay on top of the material.
The workload is very light and he explains the material well. However grading takes forever, lectures are not always given, and there is a LOT of reading material.
he takes forever to grade things and to respond to emails too, but the class is not bad, but it has either 1 discussion post each week or a quiz or a "short answer assignment" which is not really short and takes a bit to complete. has a proctored midterm and final exam, as well as 3 proctored quizzes and 1 that's not.
Great guy. His lectures can be boring (maybe I'm not born for this), but he seems passionate about the subject. A lot of readings, quizzes and tests are difficult, most of the stuff is commnon sense, but you do need to know the material to do well on tests. His powerpoints are a good source to study for the tests.
This class was really easy online. His video lectures helped me comprehend the material more for the tests. He uses lockdown browser. There is a lot of reading and writing, but it's manageable. Just watching his video lectures helps a lot
