Mr. Swartz is great! If you show that you want to work hard he will help you and make chemistry a lot easier for you but if you only want him to give you answers on a hw assignment he wont really help. He's intimidating at first because he doesn't want people to mess around in his lab. Just introduce yourself and respect him and it's cool.
hes strict but he really knows his stuff. and plus hes a hottie!
def my most favorite teacher by far!!! . . .so friendly and helpfull!! the labs are tough in the begining, but he is always there to help! A++++
His labs are kind of tough, however he is always there to help. He will never give you the answers to anything, but he will talk it through with you and really get you to understand.
This was the hardest class anyone can ever take. We did so much work, and recieved such bad grades. I would not recomend taking a class with him to anyone.
****-read myspace professor ratings on him, they explain him very well, hardest grader, thinks he is a public school teacher in a private small school, trys to **** you over with grades, you will understand if you take his lab, thinks his class is the only one your taking and therefore can take up all your time, everyone ****ing hates this man!
Boo-hoo to the wuss below. Grow up and realize that not everything is handed to you. Probably some athlete that thinks he will go pro - good f***in luck. I enjoyed being challenged!

I really liked this class. It was easy to understand. His tests were common sense. If you went to class & paid attention, you did fine. He also let us bring a notebook full of notes from the cases we had to read in the book to the tests so those were pretty much a giveaway.
Labs are to reinforce what you learn in lecture. Teacher provided no help to reinforce what was learned in lecture.
People need to understand that swartz does not write the lab manul and come up with all the stupid sh*t we do!!! i think he does a really good job helping and i learned more from lab than i ever did from lecture!!! i wish he could teach lecture also.
Chooses favorites and doesn't help everyone. Makes you not want to learn because he makes you feel like a moron
I agree, he makes you feel like a complete moron, chooses favorites and when you ask him a question, instead of helping you, he asks you the same question you asked him just to make himself feel superior.
He thinks he is God's gift to the science world. He makes sure that everyone knows that. He does not help anyone but his favorites. Grading is also done by favorites. He is the worst teacher in the world! Instead of helping you, he'll just try to make you feel stupid. What that accomplishes??? Beats me!
Swartz is amazing, and if you aren't one of his so called "favorites" you probably aren't doing your work! Ask questions and complete the labs and he will help. The stuff is hard but the point is to learn!
Despite his stern demeanor Swartz is a great professor. He will out of his way to help you if you ask for it. So, ask questions and don't be afraid to speak up! He is really caring at heart.
not even worth my time to comment
Chem 110 is very difficult, but if you get through the first half you'll be fine. Chem 111 is a breeze compaired to 110. Very helpful and smart-so long as you ask.
I made it through the class so fine but i don't think that making people feel inferior is a good teaching method. If you feel stupid asking simple questions in class why would you approach him during office hours? I also feel there is no reason to be that condescending and rude to students. This class is a do or die for PAs.
One of the few teachers that you can ask a question and if you yourself can answer it then he wont tell you the answer, but tell you where to find it. if you couldnt find the answer though he will help. dont expect it to be handed to you. And its alot of work for 1 credit, but i say suck it up.. your a big kid you can handle it
Expect too work hard, but he will help you when you do. Most people whine about the difficulty, but the lab is only hard when you write the reports the night before. Rock-on!
Great teacher - expect to feel stupid everyday you are in there but if you make it through this class then you are golden with graduating as either a PA or PT
Swartz is tough to begin with but he turns out to be a really great professor. In my opinion he's the exact way I want my chem prof to be. Kind of a tough grader though..
In the first few weeks of class, he is scary and stern. But after half of his classes drop, he becomes a nice guy. He is extremely helpful in class and out. Seeing him at office hours is very valuable. Get to know the guy, hes really nice and kind. Take the time to do the work, and you will be fine as long as you make it past the first chem test.
Plain and simple he is a beast. He has red hair and that makes him soulless but AWESOME. He doesn't always grade hard, but when he does he prefers significant figures. Also he speaks only french...in russian
Swartz is a very hard grader and may seem mean at first but once you get to know him he's extremely nice! he's sooo helpful when you go to him with questions (when you can find him) and is really concerned with you understanding the material.
On a personal level he is a cool guy, but he is such a hard grader. Try to avoid him as your course instructor if at all possible. side note: Girls seem to think he is good looking.
He is tough! good luck
EXTREMELY TOUGH GOOD LUCK!
hard grader however helps me alot with class.
Although I must say after taking four classes including FOR 101 he still scares me! Although he is so nice once you get to know him! Also, he not as hard as everyone is saying he just wants you to learn and will even stay SO late to help you if you only ask. Overall best professor yet!
Swartz is by far the best professor I had at daemen. I believe he is the reason I made it thru PA school! Listen in the beginning of class; he will give the answers to all later questions then. TAKE NOTES THEN. very cool guy. I spent most of my homework time with him working on labs but SO worth it.
Honestly thought he hated me for the first 8 weeks, and then I withdrew. He actually convinced me to come back to class. He was super helpful when I had to make up the labs I missed. Prepare to be terrified of him for the first 3 weeks, and feel stupid. Ward calls him the fiery red head, but he's super nice if you get to know him personally.
Swartz's class is not hard if you listen to his pre labs and take notes. He will literally give you the answers to the labs, you just have to pick up on it. He is EXTREMELY helpful if you go to see him in other lab sections or at his office hours. He just wants his students to understand the material and if you try, he will make sure you do well.
He can come across as intimidating in the beginning, but he is actually super nice if you get to know him. His grading can sometimes be rough, but it's not always bad. He truly is concerned with you understanding the material. He genuinely is concerned with students who are struggling in class, or just life in general. He was there for me!
I absolutely hated him in the beginning, but now I can honestly say that he is my alltime favorite professor at Daemen! He isn't always a hard grader, but when he is he prefers significant figures. He's SUPER nice, once you get to know him, and he will bend over backwards to help you, if he thinks that you need help or you ask him. Love this man
Best professor
Although he is very scary, and stern in the beginning of CHE110, and I absolutely hated him then, he is so much nicer during the second half of CHE110, and CHE111. Ask him questions if you have them! I never did last semester because I was afraid of him, but now I ask him tons of questions, and he is SO helpful. Kind of a tough trader though.
He is the best! You'll probably hate him in the beginning, but after the first half of chem110 he turns into such a nice guy! I was having problems understanding some of the material in che111, and he actually offered to sit down with me and help me understand the material. He saved my semester! Sometimes he grades really hard though...
Although intimidating in the beginning, Swartz is probably the nicest professor at daemen once you get to know him. He helped me not only with the material, but also with some personal problems too. Made it abundantly clear that he was there for me if I needed him. He's SO helpful during office hours so ask him questions! Love him he's the best
Despite how he acts in the beginning of CHE110, Swartz turns out to be a really cool guy and a fantastic professor! He was always willing to help me with the labs (when I could find him), although never expect him to just give you the answer on anything because he won't. Lab helped more than lecture ever did. Swartz also gives GREAT life advice!
People complain that he's hard, but this class is so much easier than chem111L/110L. Just do what he tells you with regards to your writing, and you'll be fine. Ask him questions when you're confused. He's definitely more relaxed in this lab, since he knows most of us, so get to know him; he's a nice guy.
Awful guy, would rate 0/5 if I could. He is so rude and inconsiderate. Office hours are a joke. He'll dock you a point every punctuation error on the lab reports.
He is great lab professor. Seems really scary at first, almost made me cry. But after the first two labs he is super nice and will really dedicate his time to help you learn. Lab write ups require a lot of time, they consumed most of my semester. Swartz is almost always in the lab to answer any questions you have though.
Inconsiderate and i wish Could give him a 0 out 5. Really tough grader.
One of the best profs I've had in my year and a half at school. Comes off scary first class or two, but you will learn a ton. Provides good feedback, if you ask the right questions. Lab helps reinforce lecture material. Has no problem talking to you outside of class, as he is at school for the majority of the day. Throws a couple extra credits in.
I love Professor Swartz. He is probably one of the best professors I have and ever will have. He was always there to answer questions, but instead of just giving you the answer, he makes you work for it so you learn. Sure he grades tough and he is not the nicest at times, but I learned so much about Chemistry and Chemistry Lab from him.
Professor Swartz may seem scary at first but he is just trying to weed out students who don't belong in hard STEM majors. I took his Chem lab 2 semesters in a row and he honestly is a teddy bear once you get to know him. He will not explicitly give you answers but help you to think in a way that you come to the answers on your own. Overall, great.
Swartz is very arrogant. Terrible professor, my friend had Dr. Liddell and said she was a better teacher. Avoid at all costs
Sometimes, I want to purposely get into a car accident to avoid his class. The workload is extremely heavy... although its just copying but beware lab reports. Bless your soul if you have him. But outside the classroom he's dope, he's a great dude.
Great guy, very scary at first but after the first lab when he really opens up. One of my favorite and most helpful teachers I have had so far.
Swartz is a very good professor; however, beware at the beginning of the semester he seems like such a mean person but he is not.
I was so intimidated by Professor Swartz at first, but once you get to know him he is such a teddy bear. Dont be scared of the silent lab he gives at the beginning of the year, its meant to scare the ones who arent meant for natural sciences and medicine away. He is super flexible with office hours and helped me with a lot of stuff.
Professor Swartz is one of the best professors you will ever have. Don't get me wrong, his grading is very frustrating, but you will learn and become a better student because of him. He'll work w/ you before exams to go over concepts you don't get & spend his own time in order to help you learn. You'll be scared at first he's a god. Word, dawg
He's gonna weed you out at the beginning
Do not be intimidated by Swartz the first day of lab. When you get to know him he is one of the nicest and funniest teachers you will ever have. His grading system is frustrating but he is ALWAYS available for help (I've stayed for office hours until 11:30pm before). If you do not understand something, go for help and try your best on every lab!
Lots of work outside of lab.
Do the prelabs and do them well because you will need all of your notes during lab. He comes off kind of mean and strict, but he just doesn't want anyone to get hurt in lab. Sometimes it's hard to tell whether or not he's being sarcastic because of the masks for COVID, but he knows his stuff. He has a ton of office hours, USE THEM!
He seems scary when you first meet him but youll learn that hes really nice! His lab reports are hard you may think you did it perfectly but he found a million things wrong. Hes a tough grader but trying to prepare you for the future! Great Professor and will help you with lessons in lecture as well!
Very difficult if you do not do the prep work or participate. Attendance is essential to pass the course. Intimidating at first but once you get to know him he is so dedicated to the success of his students. The effort you put in will be reflected in the extra effort he puts in to make sure you do well. Pay attention to all prelabs and lecture!
Swartz could come off as rude in the beginning but once you get to know him he's a sweetheart. He has office hours for class as well even though he only teaches lab. When doing lab reports, put your all into it and do extensive research because he grades hard.
Swartz is a good chemistry teacher, and I defiantly learned a lot from him, but his class can be very challenging. He is very available outside of class, but you do have to put in the effort if you want to do well and pass. He can be very brash as well. Overall, I learned from him and did well.
Hes terrifying when you first meet him but by the end of the semester hes funny and overall a big teddy bear. Lab is really hard and the labs take forever and hes a really tough grader so make sure everything is perfect!
This man is amazing. He honestly cares about you but don't be nasty or smart-assy. If you dont show up to lab you will fail. Literally just try your hardest and you will get through. He is also very thorough and will answer your questions as long as they arent stupid
Swartz is absolutely terrifying for the first semester of chem lab. If you don't show up to lab prepared he shows no mercy, and he's a very hard grader. But, he notices if you put in the work and eventually warms up to you. He's actually a nice guy and is willing to help you if you ask him questions during office hours.
Swartz is intimidating at first, but if you stick with him and prove you are doing your best, he warms up to you. He does not want you to fail but he wants to make sure you can handle the rigor of not only his class but future classes. Once he has warmed up to you, he's really personable and he's super helpful if you need help with lab or lecture.
Great professor but tough. Passionate about Chemistry, always available, and wants you to succeed.
Very tough grader, but cares about helping the students learn. Some explanations can be unclear, but he does clarify.
Be ready to work. Lab is hard but will set you up for success later on. You have to give 100% in every lab and report or else your grade will reflect it. He is nicer during his office hours.
The first day of class he will 100% scare you, but as the semester goes on, he warms up to his students. He is a lot more helpful in office hours so go to those. He does care about his students, but he also makes sure that they are prepared for upper division labs
Swartz made everything so much easier to understand and really tries to make sure you know the material. He goes through problems in class and makes it very interactive which helps with your understanding of the material. Assigns hw that makes sense and goes directly along with what you are doing in class.
Prof. Swartz will be really intimidating at first but as long as you show you are putting in effort you will be fine. Show up to office hours and ask lots of questions
He is one of the best undergraduate instructors at Daemen. Don't get me wrong, Daemen gen chem is hard and time-consuming and the standards for lab are very high and precise, but you'll learn tons. He is very accessible via office hours and email. He says you can ask him a question anytime you can find him and he means it. Great guy. ASK FOR HELP!
This was hard. It was a lot of work outside of class. Lab reports and keeping a notebook. The concepts from lecture made way more sense after this lab. Swartz is really good at his job. Do not be afraid to approach him and seek help.
He is by far one of the most competent teachers in the school and you can tell he loves what he's doing. He can come off as strict and mean in the beginning but he does that for your own preparation. I also usually would learn a lot more from his mini-lectures before the lab than the actual lecture class you're taking.
Professor Swartz can come off intimidating and is very particular however he is an absolutely amazing teacher and will do anything to help you with lecture or lab if you visit him during his office hours. Don't be afraid to reach out to him. He is probably the only reason i passed chem.
Swartz is a very tough grader, lab reports take hours to complete and you will think its perfect but he will find a bunch of tiny mistakes. Ask for help, he is very accessible outside of class and even comes in on the weekends sometimes. If you're struggling with lecture ASK SWARTZ he's a great teacher and has no problem helping.
His class is extremely difficult, but he goes out of his way to make himself available for help. 10/10 amazing professor.
He is very tough on students but will help you every step of the way though not only lab but lecture as well. Don't be scared to ask for help. Lab is fun and engaging and he is by far the best professor I have had this semester.
10/10 professor Swartz is the best wish I could take him for every class
Prof Swartz is a challenging professor, but the class is doable. Everyone around the school tends to scare you about him, but don't be. He is more than willing to answer questions and help outside of class. Yes, his lab reports are time consuming and difficult, but if you try, you will get the results! Also, very knowledgeable on chem material!
As everyone else said, hes super intimidating but is very nice and funny once you get to know him. Dont get on his bad side. Lab reports take HOURS to complete so beware. If you dont understand something from chem lecture, ask him and he will explain it to you in a way that makes sense. Hes literally always here, he deserves a raise.
Such a good teacher. He makes the first semester tough to weed out any kids that are not serious about what they're getting themselves into. Do not drop out if you fail a couple labs at the beginning of the year. I grew so much from his class, he is by far my favorite teacher. Definitely work with others on the labs and use the tutors.
