I would take anything Derrick Watkins offers at Goldenwest. He teaches from the heart and his classes are never boring. He puts everything that will be on the tests on the powerpoints, and he lets you use notes on the tests. So show up to class, take notes, and you'll ace every test. If he makes you write a paper it's only two pages double spaced.

I recommend this class for anyone who's interested in joining the police academy, and to anyone who wants to learn some truths behind the justice system. I don't wake up for just any one at 6 AM but his class was so worth it I took his drugs and society class. I'm a nursing major but found it very interesting. He's so funny and not to mention very attractive(; He's so inspiring I almost switched majors because of his class !

My favorite teacher at Golden West by far. He loves what he does and he makes the students enjoy it. No book, open notes, really easy if you show up. He teaches some incorrect stuff (psychoanalytic theory), but it's no big deal because it's open note tests so... you don't have to memorize incorrect info. Teaches like everyone is 18yrs old, which is slightly annoying. But VERY easy and interesting.

He use to be a police officer so during the lectures he shared many stories about his time in the field. He also shows many video clips and documentaries about substance abuse which are really interesting. He's such a great guy who really understands how to speak to young adults. Loved this class.

I could never fall asleep because lecture is always fun! Take notes in class. There are like 2 quizes, 2 tests (50 questions), a few papers to do, and some extra credit. Always do the extra credit assignments! The videos he showed in class are interesting. Very simple to get an A :)

Today was the last day of class, and already I miss it. His knowledge with the materials go hand in hand with real life personal stories AS AN EX COP!! Seemed like he had an old cop story for each lecture, which were pretty entertaining. Quizzesmid termfinal are all open notes.

This is my 2nd semester with Watkins and I plan on taking a 3rd time with him next semester. He is an amazing professor who really really knows his material . Professor Watkins is a fantastic professor. I took him for two of my CJ courses and passed both with an "A". He typically gives open note quizes and does give some extra credit. Watkins loves to tell stories of when he was in law enforcement. I truly wish I could take more of his classes.

Dude professor Watkins was hands down one of the most caring and funny professors I've ever had. He makes it so simple, but you still learn so much. Prof Watkins is great. He usually begins each class with a few COPS episodes. Lecture every day and the quizzes/test are all open notes. Only downside is that some of the questions on the quizzes aren't in lectures. But its usually common sense anyways. He has great, real life stories.. but he kind of tells the same ones over and over again.

Hands down the best prof I have ever had. I have taken all the classes he teaches and if he taught any other classes I'd take them too. Workload is light, offers extra credit, and OPEN NOTE quizzes! The only way to do poorly is to not show up. He's very caring and it shows! Not to mention LECTURES ARE AMAZING!! He has so many interesting stories!

I have taken 2 of his classes & this last time was during the coronavirus pandemic. He comes off as intimidating sometimes, but he is very patient, understanding, & motivational. His lectures are intriguing & his stories from being a police officer are even crazier. The quizzes are almost always open note & sometimes he gives extra credit.

He positively incredible, his class was quite easy and he gives many extra credits. He also rounded your score to make it even. Quiz and test are quite easy, it's all in the lettuces, his lettuce also short too. He will respond to all of your works, seem like a careful teacher. Highly recommend!!

The workload is light and quizzes are open notes so please do attend all lectures because his quizzes/exams are based on lectures so if you miss a day of lecture you will miss out on a lot of content. Professor Watkins is a professor who cares about his students and wants to see them pass. As long as you participate in class and do well on assignments you should be alright. Just be aware on quizzes and exams you have to have printed notes or hand written notes, no notes on laptop allowed during quizzes or exams. Open book for quizzes and exams

Professor Watkins did a good job of providing slideshows and videos for the students to watch in the Introduction to Criminal Justice class. There was a combination of discussions, short essay papers, a midterm, final, and final research paper. The class was graded relatively easily and full credit was given if enough effort went into the work.

Professor Watkins was excellent at teaching Criminal Investigation! His stories are interesting too since he worked in that field for so many years. There's going to be a LOT of slide-shows, but I still recommend him after everything. He really does seem like he loves teaching. There was also extra credit at the end if you needed it.

Just completed his class this fall 2023 and it was one of the easiest classes I have ever taken! He's an amazing professor as well, great lectures! I would recommend it to anyone looking to take the Intro to Criminal Justice class. I would take him again as a professor

Heads up that there are a LOT of slides to get through but the workload is very light, consisting of some discussions, short writing assignments, and quizzes. The course was 8 weeks with two weeks of work crammed in each, yet it was still lenient on my time. Overall, a chill class that's easy to get credits for while being interesting.

My favorite professor ever, definitely recommend him. I took concepts of criminal law, and currently taking criminal investigation with him. Both of which I feel like I've learnt so much from. He tells great stories, while encouraging student participation, and he cares about each of his students individually.

Quite literally the most manageable 8 week class I have ever taken, 1-2 assignments per week. Along with lots of supplemental material if needed and open note test and quizzes. The instructor also always leaves some type of feedback and offers extra credit.
