Really knowledgable and helpful guy, always answered my e-mails right away and let me rewrite a paper I didn't do well on. His standards for writing and reading are really high though, if you don't keep up with the assignments you won't pass!!!
Devin is an excellent professor but frustrating at times. I took Phil 101 from him which I had no interest in, and he made the course simultaneously interesting and dreadful. His lectures are great, he has a great personality and he is handsome. However I felt like the material was too hard for a 101 level course. Take Devin if you want a challenge
I started out hating this class but once I got through the first rough patch it turned out to be really thought provoking and challenging. I thought about all kinds of things I had never thought about before, but I'm glad I did now. Professor Bray is passionate and excitable and will push you do to the best work you can. He's accommodating, too.
Overall, Devin Bray was fantastic. I took his Phil101 class and was completely intrigued through almost every lecture. He is a tough grader, but fair. He places heavy importance on writing and expects well supported arguments. Even if you don't leave this class loving philosophy like I did, you'll leave a much better writer.
Professor Bray's course changed my life. He really pushed me to think and write more clearly than my other professors have, but he also brought up ideas about meaning, free will, and culture that made me reconsider the way I spend my time. He is a tough grader but will also put a lot of time into helping you if you need it.
Devin Bray is an incredible teacher! Has a very good speaking voice and captivates students attention. Very good with explaining hard to understand topics and answers all questions very thoroughly until the student understands. Really nice guy in general. Would love to take another class from him again.
Professor Bray was awesome! He was super good at philosophy, is extremely knowledgeable and could handle any question that came his way. He made philosophy fun and hip, he related the topics to the 21st century and made the stuff understandable. I liked his voice- it wasn't boring like typical philosophy professors. He was super nice. Recommended!
While this was only an intro course I wish it could have been a 4 credit class just to get some extra lecture timeevery week. Professor Bray is one of the smartest people I have ever met. He really brings a wide depth ofinformation other than just Philosophy to class. He provided deep insight that made class relevant to our lives.
Devin is very engaging - his class is enjoyable and organic. He does not expect to let you slide by without trying, but if you try your best and participate you should have no problems in his class. I also enjoy that Devin clearly knows his material since can bring up and expand on complex philosophical ideas without needing to read a powerpoint.
Professor Bray is funny, and really knows his stuff. If you keep up with the reading it's not a hard class, but he is tough on essays so start those early. Stay after class to ask him random questions about life, you won't regret it.
This class was amazing. I learnt a lot of things from this class.
He uses magic tricks and a crazy amount of knowledge to teach about science and pseudoscience and I learned a lot. It was really interesting and I ended up questioning a lot of stuff I thought I knew even after it made me upset at first. I learnt a lot and am more questioning now take his critical thinking it will make you think
This class was amazing. I learned more this semester than I ever have from a single class.
I really did enjoy this class, it wasn't what I expected to be at all. I feel that it has really altered the way I think about things and over all really did make me smarter. I used stuff he taught in other classes and he was really fun too! He uses magic tricks to get you interested and then makes you think about logical explanations.
This class inspired me to finish my degree during a time where I wasnt sure I wanted to continue. Seeing a teacher sincerely care about the work and our input and push us to think meant a lot. I have taken other philosophy classes before and hated them but Professor Brays enthusiasm rubs off on you.
Here is an example of how the professor really changes a class. The subject is in nature dry and boring. Yet, Professor Bray managed to make every class interesting with magic, talk of the abnormal and much more. If I missed a class I was left with regret. If a class is taught by Prof. Bray then it is worth taking. Not enough space for this.
This course was so refreshing. Dr. Bray does not tell you what to think or make you agree with him, but wants you to think and question what he is saying as much as you question what you already believe. One idea he stressed was the idea of using critical thinking to examine your own beliefs which I thought was eye opening. Great class
I took Dr. Bray's online CH202 class. He was a wonderful teacher and I actually ended up enjoying it. I wish I had the opportunity to take a class of his in person because I could tell he really cares about his students and wants us to improve. He gives thoughtful feedback on all writing assignments and really knows what he's talking about. 10/10
I absolutely loved Professor Bray! He is extremely intelligent and inspirational, I was never bored in his class and learned so much. If you are thinking of taking one of his classes seriously do it! He really cares about his students and tries to make the criteria as easy and understandable as possible. Not a lot of homework, there is extra credit
I have hated philosophy classes in the past but Professor Bray is authoritative without being arrogant. Every time he gave his opinion on a controversial topic, he bracketed it and told us not to take his word for it but to go look at the evidence which I thought showed respect. Logic isnt very fun but this class gave me a lot to think about.
I took this class over the wintermester. It was a lot of reading and writing for the short 3 week class. However, Professor Bray was a great guy and made the long class periods interesting. He cares about his students and wants them to succeed. He was very understanding and worked with his class about how they wanted the class to be structured.
Devin Bray understands his material more than any teacher I have ever had. He has mastered every aspect of critical thinking, which is apparent every lecture, and makes the class interesting and easier to grasp. Expects a lot out of his students but gave us every resource to do well. Amazing, passionate, caring - I could go on. Great professor.
pretty solid professor, but a tough grader. No BSing assignments with this guy. He gives great lectures and is very willing to help with struggling students, I would recommend him if you like learning about practical philosophy.
I loved this class. I generally like to think I'm open-minded, but this class showed me that biases affect my decision-making just like everyone else. I enjoyed the real-life relations to concepts we were learning as it helped understand the concepts as well as apply them to real life, which I think a lot of classes don't do. Great essay topics.
In my limited experience, philosophy instructors can be pompous and rather full of themselves, tending to belittle or ridicule. I was pleased to find out that our instructor was not this way at all. The syllabus was written with clear expectations, and this professor was always there with detailed comments to help me improve. Caring and engaged.
This class made me want to take other philosophy classes! I dont know if Ive ever had another professor this passionate and he could answer any question on the fly. He met with me a few times when I needed help. He will make you work for it but he is very fair.
I've come away from other college classes knowing more things, but I came away from this classes understanding how to think in a smarter, clearer way in general. Professor Bray doesn't talk about his opinions, but thinking critically the way he taught me still challenged many of my beliefs, and changed some of them. Intense and well worth it.
Professor Bray is an exceptionally engaging teacher, and demonstrates a clear mastery of his teaching material. He's good at simplifying confusing or abstract concepts. He also encourages us to think for ourselves and challenge what he says, which is a good quality in a class such as this. He does get a little sidetracked with stories sometimes.
Its obvious how knowledgeable Professor Bray is, and I like that he doesnt have a condescending tone when speaking to students because he genuinely wants the students to develop skills they didnt have before. Being able to see him evaluate a certain argument in front of the class and showing us what to look for was really eye opening.
I was expecting this class to be boring or just pushing a liberal agenda, but professor Bray made us look at every issue from multiple angles and wouldn't tell us which one he thought was right. Most of us learned we could be better listeners and that moral issues are harder than they first look. I learned more in five weeks than my STEM classes.
Mr. Brays class isnt easy but if you pay attention and work with him he is teaching ideas you can take with you the rest of your life. When I enrolled in this class I believed the government was hiding a cure for cancer, but Bray helped me understand why so many people believe that even though it isnt the best fit for the evidence. Take this!
I really appreciate the effort he puts into replying to class discussions and giving a lot of feedback on the essays. I plan to be a lawyer, so understanding arguments and learning to think critically is definitely something I will use in the future. I learned how to better analyze the arguments others make, and construct better ones myself.
He really makes it interesting. I was worried that the course material would be dry, but he spiced it up well.
Every lecture was extremely interesting, covering everything from ways our perception is flawed, to how psychics pull off their tricks, and how to evaluate conspiracy theories. Professor Bray is always tying the concepts to events in the news and trending claims, which really helped me think more critically about things I read. Take this class!
This class changed me. When we started I thought Big Pharma was hiding a cure for cancer, but Bray helped me understand why cancer is so hard to cure, and why grand conspiracy theories are unlikely to be true in general. I was resistant at first, but gradually I noticed the way I looked at the world was changing. Tough grader, but he really cares
First of all, he's a magician. Second of all, he's a great professor! Great classes that attendance is pretty much mandatory for, only 3 absences allowed. He is great at replying to emails and is really knowledgeable about logic. I think this class made me so much better at argumentation and logic, so it's good for a lot of majors.
He has a tougher way of grading but hell give you plenty of chances to succeed which made me actually do the work and learn the material unlike my other CH courses. It did have a heavy workload in comparison to my other classes, but I can now look back and say that it was worth it. Its no use taking a class if you leave remembering nothing.
Cant say enough good things. Ive become a better thinker about the wider world, and I learned a little magic! Im a psychology major and this class showed me how hard it is to draw conclusions in psych and why we really need such careful controls. Whatever you plan to do, Professor Bray can teach you to be smarter doing it.
Professor Bray's teaching is nothing less than exceptional. I was highly impressed every day of class how enthusiastic and thought provoking his lectures were. His true passion for what he's teaching really shows and it makes class very enjoyable and interesting.
Professor Bray always made class super intresting and fun. I always have a hard time finding motivation to go to classes that are so late, especially during the winter when it's cold, but Professor Bray made it easy when class was always so engaging. He was super knowledgable on the subject too, and also a ton of other subjects which was very cool.
He really cares that you understand the material. He's really funny and tries to make the course really fun. His grading is really clear when it comes to writing. You'll pass just fine. Just attend class because attendance affects your grade. The reading is super easy as well. I took him in 2018 Fall.
I recommend that every major should have to take this course. I have taken Critical Thinking courses at a previous institution and the way Professor Bray teaches his course, blows the other professors out of the waters. I highly recommend other students taking him.
He cares deeply about his student's understanding, and his class reflects this. Professor Bray, covering some controversial topics, was very unbiased and covered both or multiple sides of the argument. I appreciated this very much because even though I had different views of the world than he did, he never would belittle or embarrass anyone.
Mr. Bray seems to really know his stuff, but he also has a funny and informal style that encourages students to participate. Some of the best moments in our class happened when students challenged him or asked difficult questions. Don't be afraid to argue. You'll get more out of it if you do.
I'm not a big philosophy person, but this class made my appreciation for it grow a ton. It made me think in ways that I usually don't. It was insightful and constantly making me think critically about my opinions. The professor gave insight into how the authors were arriving at their viewpoints which a lot of teachers miss or don't even cover.
A very engaging lecturer, so much so that I looked forward to his class despite it being at 8am during summer break. I have recommended him to several friends and would love to take another class by him because I get the impression he would bring the same knowledge and enthusiasm to each class as he did this one.
Professor Bray seems to know a lot about Philosophy, but DO NOT take this professor if you are not a philo major. I am a social work major and me, and 90% of the class thought the material was hard, and they way he taught it was confusing and very difficult. Hardest 100 level class I have ever taken. Papers are graded hard as well as discussion
Very well prepared. Provides lots of youtube videos to understand concepts and always willing to meet w you. Class was 50/50 boring to the max and interesting with conspiracy theorizes and magic tricks. NEED to study concepts(lots of them). I got lost by week 6 and it was survival after that. Final(timely) Essay(critique conspiracy)+Test(concepts)
Professor Bray may expect you to do some work, but he is very fair when it comes to guidelines and he is willing to work with you on an individual basis as long as you go and talk to him. He knows EVERYTHING so class isn't just philosophy, he brings in other interesting topics to talk about. Overall a very smart, nice, and flexible professor.
I really enjoyed Professor Bray's course because it's clear he loves what he teaches, making it easy to pay attention. I liked his style of teaching because his explanations were very clear and provided us with multiple examples in order to help us understand what we were learning. He also had a good sense of humor which kept things lively and fun!
Mr. Bray is downright inspiring. I took his class over a year ago and I still use things i took away from him. Going to college changed a lot of elements of my world view but nothing motivated me to think harder and question more than his lessons in critical thinking. Some of the work is abstract but if you put in the work youll be glad you did.
I saw the great reviews of Bray and decided to give him a try. WORST DECISION EVER. I ended up having to drop the class. VERY lecture heavy. Could be because of my depression, but I could not process a single thing happening in my class and he is a tough grader. He's clearly passionate, but I only recommend him if you're willing to work super hard.
I took the Saturday class so it might be different. Class was 3 hrs and he lectured the whole time. BUT he is lectures are so amazing and he is very intriguing that time flies by fast and the notes really help for essays and final. We only had one test and two essays. He grades the essays very critically but gives great feedback. Lots of reading.
I took professor Brays critical thinking class and even during the pandemic he kept things relevant, relating course concepts to Covid news stories and conspiracy theories which probably helped me think more clearly about the situation. He does a good job of showing why these concepts matter even outside a university.
He is great but the course itself is so hard! He gives feedback and will try to help but if you want to get an A, it is almost impossible with how hard the tests are and how much reading there is. Lectures are extremely lengthy. If you want to get an A, take the class in person but other than that I learned a lot about modes of thought and cultures
It was obvious you had to work for your grade in this class, especially on the homework and papers. But Professor Bray was always willing to help and go over things I didn't understand in the lectures, he responded to emails fast :) The textbook is used a lot so make sure to always have it on you.
Very chill and easy going professor. I took this class online during COVID and it was a breeze. I like how he doesn't do Zoom lectures and the class is asynchronous. He gives great feedback and is always available if you need help.
Professor Bray is extremely knowledgeable and you can tell that he is confident with the material. Though the class was online, he is a great lecturer and explains material so its easier to understand. Hes always available to help and responds to emails fast. He gives great feedback and is flexible with grades. It is a text heavy class however.
I took his disputed moral issues class online and he did a good job of getting everyone involved and making the readings feel relevant. He encouraged questioning the material and was willing to get on Zoom at any time to help with anything which was a huge benefit.
Lots of reading and writing but his lectures are transparent and forward and the rubric for grading makes it clear what you have to do to succeed in the class.
If you have to take CH202, take it with Bray!! Pros: No zoom lectures & no quizzes. You watch lecture videos uploaded on canvas, read the assigned readings & complete the discussion question & essay for the week. Cons: A lot of readings. Like A LOT. Plus a 2-page essay on readings every week. This is with every CH202 class tho, so Pick Bray!
I thought Mr. Bray was a great professor! Clearly passionate about his class, I personally did not like the course because it was hard for me personally but I still think it was a really cool class.
Professor Bray forces you to think and question yourself. At first I thought the course was challenging my beliefs because of what I believe, but as the semester went on it became clear he wants everyone to question themselves. This class has made me think a lot more about how I think and come to conclusions. Everyone should take this in college
I haven't had a professor like Professor Bray since I have entered college. No one has been so knowledgeable and so caring for their students. He always responds to his students quicker than any other professor i've had.
If you take PHIL-245 in the summer HE WILL downgrade the coursework so keep that in mind. In general I really liked him. He's defiantly a good and understanding person. The discussions are really interesting but there are SO MANY READINGS to keep up with. Two essays, one discussion question, and a quick/easy(ish) final. Not a bad choice at all.
Very clear and straightforward. Not many assignments, at least for this class. Attendance is required but lenient due to covid. Lectures are thorough and he goes over everything in depth and very clearly.
Mr Bray's lectures are passionate and energetic and its clear he wants you to understand critical thinking in detail. I also found this course interesting because it seems bigger to him that you learn how to use the concepts in your life than getting them exactly right for the assignments. Some of it was over my head but I still learned a lot
This class has a ton of lengthy discussions and little to no homework. There is a lot of readings and your final is a 6 page paper. Bray is very intelligent and feels he is superior to his students when you try to ask for help or guidance. His lectures can be hard to follow and he is a tough grader.
I thoroughly enjoyed Professor Devin Brays class. He is clearly knowledgeable and passionate about philosophy. He is a good lecture and maintained my attention. However, his class is not easy. I would have not passed without reading, doing all the homework, extra credit and working with other students. I had to work for my B+.
Mr. Bray connects together so many abstract ideas about society and culture that sometimes it felt like I was seeing the whole big picture. Most classes feel like looking at just one thing in detail but this class feels relevant to everything in a way. Every lecture made me think and I ended up talking to my boyfriend after class about it a lot.
Great professor, very flexible but makes you work for it
Easy to follow during lectures. Grades are dependent on few things. Lots of terms to memorize from textbook.
it felt like some of the assignments were all or nothing. I would miss a couple of questions and would get 0 points out of 150. The way that things were graded was very unclear he he didn't respond to emails.
Don't recommend him or this class, it was very challenging and on top of it grades very harshly. He doesn't explain the material very well, and even with this class being a 102 course the assignments he gives feels like they are for major students, not for course requirements. I can't emphasize this enough, don't take him or his class.
This is by far one of the hardest and most confusing classes I have ever taken at UNR. All he does is lecture and the expects us to do a phenomenal job on every assignment. He is also really passive aggressive and means sometimes :(
I loved having conversations in this class, though often it was only the professor and me. I would love to take more of his classes. Very exuberant and knows the topics he is teaching to a T. I think that this course can be ver beneficial to give an understanding of why things are the way they are today.
The course was such a new experience for me that I enjoyed thoroughly. I am grateful to say that I feel as if I am leaving with many valuable new tools. This course was comprehensive in the best way since every class I take costs quite a bit, I really appreciate it when courses are worth all that is spent on them, and this class most certainly was.
Prof Bray is phenomenal. It was academically rigorous yet completely engaging. He is clearly very educated and passionate about what he teaches. This made the class incredibly stimulating. I can confidently say that I am leaving with a wealth of knowledge. It is truly refreshing to see a professor who cares a great deal about what he does.
I took this class during the summer and I started it with a salty attitude because I am not into philosophy! I ended up leaving with a more open mind and better outlook. For summer, we had 4 quizzes, 2 essays, and a final. Each essay was ~5 pages and fairly open. He explains things thoroughly and you can see he loves what he does. Highly recommend.
Professor Bray was an outstanding lecturer who took abstract concepts and made them very digestible. I did not understand most of the readings until he helped us understand them. He did an incredible job helping us see the relevance of these philosophical ideas to our own lives.
Similar to previous students I went in thinking philosophy wasn't my cup of tea, but emerged from Devin's class with a new (and much nicer) perspective of the discipline. The class was challenging and thought provoking without feeling too abstract or too biased. Take him if you enjoy thinking through complex topics
This class made me want to drop out of college. He is a good person. But as an instructor he is a very harsh grader which is why my grade was low. In regards to grading he does not give much insight on what you can do to improve. I have never felt so defeated until I took this class. Take something else if you are fresh into Philosophy.
Devin may seem like a nice person but don't let the fool you into taking this class with him. He is a terrible grader that expects way too much with little insight for improvement. If I could go back in time and pick a different professor, I would with no hesitation. PS, take CH 202 in person because it is easier and lenient than online!
thought that the instructors teaching was amazing. The instructors always kept the topic very interesting and furthered explain the readings so, that the class as a whole would truly understand the readings. It was really interesting to hear about all the connectivity of the different ideals with the real world and how it is used now a days as well
Professor Bray did a fantastic job getting people to understand the nuances and language of premodern times. It was a little difficult to grasp some concepts, especially with such a late class, but he was pretty much always available to contact for help.
I thought that the instructors teaching was amazing. The instructors always kept the topic very interesting and explained the readings so, that the class as a whole would truly understand the readings. It was really interesting to hear about all the connectivity of the different ideals with the real world and how it is used now a days as well.
He lectures a lot, but if you pay attention and ask questions you can get a lot of information out of him. His knowledge about art and philosophy is impressive and can seem almost bottomless, but if you don't keep up he will punish you in the essays. Be prepared to read and to think. Ask him questions outside class, he is a thoughtful listener.
Easily my favorite professor this semester. Though some of the reading was frustrating, the class was always thought provoking and i always learned something. The time with him in class is a gold mine of philosophical information, and he is very flexible with students who struggle with the standard syllabus. He'll push you for the right reasons.
This was actually for his CH 201 class, but that was not an option. He took a very well documented philosophical route on the topic, making it interesting the whole while, while providing entertaining details and discussions with the class as a whole. Very fun guy to talk with, wide array of interests for all.
He is a tough grader, but I think that he does it because he wants us to understand the material thoroughly. I enjoyed the readings we did in class, and the the things we did were insightful for my college career regarding neuroscience and psychology. I look up to him for always trying new things, though very little, he's somewhat narcissistic :/
Devin's enthusiasm for art is infectious and I find myself wanting to take more time to think about why people make art and how it can lead to more thoughtful societies. The readings are hard but he is eager to help outside his normal hours. His classes are a challenge, but inspiring.
This professor is extremely lecture heavy while claiming that this is a discussion heavy class. There is so much reading assigned, and when it is simply misunderstood, it can result in a bad grade because "you didn't do the reading."
This prof is a good person who is passionate, but he is an awful teacher for a beginner class. I found myself sitting through mandatory lectures that were him talking in language that was way too difficult to understand.very philosophy heavy and will mark you down if you don't interpret reading the way HE does. Frustrated, defeated, and feel stupid
Devin is easily the best professor I have ever had. This course has lots of reading, homework assignments that are challenging, and class meetings where he demands participation, but he always makes himself available to help you out when you need it. This course may be difficult, but if you are genuinely interested, it will be worth it (:
Honestly just a great person in general the class talks about a lot of dark things and he makes jokes to lighten the mood even though his humor is dark. You can tell he's really dedicated and would rather just talk things through then tell you what he thinks. He also brings up new materials in class based on what students say they are interested in
Despite this being an entry level course the material can be hard to understand and he doesn't seem to understand that. I know people lost points for "not doing the reading" even if they did. Also be ready to do a lot of writing. His essays are on the longer side and he has frequent discussions post that need to be a min of 800 words.
The online course is so bad its funny. No feedback is given. Almost impossible to get an A. Im convinced there is no professor as the never reply. 3 weekly things due; more work in one class than four 400 level upper division classes (readings, videos/movies exams, quizzes, assignments, and discussions). 1000 points total. Assignments are unclear.
Great professor! Takes teaching very serious and I respect him for that, one of the best classes I've taken here at UNR, class was very fun and interesting, I learned a lot. Devin is not an easy professor by any means, you have to put effort and work hard. I would take him again, also he's very empathetic and I fell in love with his personality
He approaches his work seriously, and as long as you understand that, you should be fine. I noticed that he was always generous unless someone showed disrespect for the material. I saw him push aside a few students who communicated in one way or another that they didn't care about the class.
By far the best philosophy professor | have ever had. He went out of his way to target specific learning outcomes for me and was able make my paradigms do a full 180 which is a very difficult achievement. I know for a fact that his teaching impacted my classmates just as strongly. He is one in a million which only the best of the best profs have.
Awesome professor to talk to. So much reading for his class though.
Would avoid taking this class if you could. Took this after finishing 203 with an A and the professor was a harsh grader making it hard to earn an A.
Super easygoing professor, very generous with his time outside class. He will help you for hours if you are struggling. Turning in drafts of papers highly recommended
It was an okay class
CH202 online is awful, but it's more of a university issue, as all online sections of CH202 are the same, regardless of professor. There is so much reading and writing, and the tests are HARD. I put way more effort into this course than all my in person classes. Dr. Bray was helpful and tried to alleviate some of the work, but he is a harsh grader.
He is one of the most impactful teachers I've ever had. There would be many times I would stay after class to further discuss ideas because he made learning exciting, thus I wanted to know more and understand at a deeper level. I would also stay after class to just talk, as he was personable and easy to engage with. He also is incredibly caring.
This class can be challenging, but staying engaged and using tools like unstuck AI for study prep can really help. The professor is passionate but the lectures can be difficult. Overall, it's worth it if you're genuinely interested in the material.
This professor is great at what he does; however, I had to dock two stars for several reasons. 1- He was quite passive aggressive to me. 2- He was very much a harsh grader, to the point where it was impossible to get an A. Due to this, I'm settling in the middle ground.
