Nice professor. I am Technologically challenged and had a hard time learning about QBasic Light and how to program. Tests were not very difficult.

This was the most relaxing class ever. If you don't know what to do the T.A. will help you out most of the time. DO NOT waste your money on a book for this class. You will not need it unless you do not know what a virus is and dont have the internet.

Take for freshman seminar! All you had to do was show up, the only H/W was a few journals an easy website he will totally help w/ and a few short write ups he calls essays... He's very flexible w/ the assignments too. Also, he is realy nerdy funny and proud of it, and he relates everything to world of warcraft and LOL cats

Very relaxing class. Don't waste your money on the book, but do buy the QBasic book because you will need it for the labs. Tests are straight forward and right from the power point.

If you dont get an A you are a failure at life. Dont need to take notes, uploads them all to the website, everything on exams are straight forward. You get a cheat sheet for the final if you want one, offers lots of extra credit, and is a great professor. Very enthusiastic about computer science. Extremely easy class. Oh and no textbook!

Good teacher, prototypical nerd. told us not to take notes because he would post lectures on-line, was a little slow in this, so many of the students took notes anyway. Very helpful during office hours. no text book.

He is not a good prof to learn and intro to C programming from. I sent him dozens of emails, and he never responds. there is no text book for this class, so your comp prog knowledge will come from his short slides, that consist more of pictures than actual detailed steps. I am not doing well because there is not enough info provided.

Mr. Cook is a really great instructor that is *obsessed* with the subject matter. He doesn't require a book, but you don't need one. He has extensive lecture notes (powerpoint slides) that work just as well. Just apply yourself and you will get an A.

Great professor. Makes what should be a pretty boring topic kind of fun. His quirky jokes and terrible puns make his lectures unpredictable. He doesn't have you buy a textbook and uploads lecture slides online instead. I'd definitely recommend this professor. Oh, and he loves that "What does the fox say?" video!

Great Professor, I encourage anyone who is interested in majoring in CS to take a course with him. He is very chill and nerdy. Other than his nerdy jokes and his obsessions with movies and TV shows, he's a great professor. I learned a lot, and his class helped me become a better programmer in my other courses. I hope one day he can teach CSC 20.

Very outgoing and friendly teacher. He i can get frustrated when a student constantly asks for help on lab, but overall, he gives you hints to help you get the programming right. I took him in conjunction with Faroughi, and I seriously think he would be a better instructor than a lab and activity instructor. Enjoyed him very much.

This guy is great, funny, witty, and nice. He's a little slow in covering the material but he provides all his notes online in PDF format and is always there to help with the labs. Study his notes, ask questions, and you'll do great in this class.

Great professor! He made a complicated subject amazingly easy to understand by creating a fun and joking atmosphere. Very supportive/helpful. Added extra credit to labs/projects to push students to be challenged. I would love to take more classes with him.

He's a nice guy but I wouldn't take classes from him. He knows what he's talking about , but he doesn't explain small things that are important and he speaks of them as if you already know what they are.

Classes are very informal, not firmly structured. Lots of jokes and banter. Subject contained a lot of confusing material, no book to supplement the lectures. Lectures on powerpoint slides and could take 3 or 4 'lectures' to cover all of it; slides weren't made available until it was completely covered, difficult to study. Very few labs.

Cooks a good professor, but I would not recommend taking him twice. He was hilarious dorky professor the first time around, but the second time you realize he's running on a script, repeating the same jokes and anecdotes again . it gets really annoying real quick. The class however is super easy; all lecture notes and homeworks are posted online.

Cook's lectures are awesome. He always throws in a lot of jokes and references to keep the class engaged and he makes difficult programming concepts very easy to understand. The lab assignments are easy, and the two projects take time, but aren't difficult. The tests consist of writing code and they can be quite difficult, but he grades on a curve.

Great professor who is interested in his work. Cracks jokes very often during lecture, easy to follow and gladly answers questions during class. No book required. Lab was taken every other week, if not, every 2 weeks. Gladly take his class again. Take his tests seriously though, they can be somewhat difficult, even with his jokes between questions.

It has been a pleasure taking professor Cook this semester. He's funny and lame in a good way and really connects with the class. His lectures are great and he knows how to make the boring content interesting. Beware of his exams. They aren't hard, but content-heavy. Some questions will lie in ONE sentence in ONE lecture slide out of hundreds.

make sure you know the definitions and registers. labs are easy. he is a fair grader and gave extra points after midterm to boost grades. he doesnt upload his notes all that quickly and turns off access sometimes like during test obviously. save all resources since he removes study guide after midterm.

Take him if you can, you will enjoy this class. Was my favorite class out of taking CSC 28/35/15/35/10. Lectures are always engaging, no homework, labs are extremely fun. He likes Rick and Morty and WOW, and he brings up a lot of Mario and history facts during lecture.

No one is easier to take than him for Assembly language/computer architecture. Check all the local community colleges and other nearby universities. Easy labs/project with a whole week to do them. easy midterms and final that have easy to understand questions. helpful in and out of class. If you don't get an A here or pass, you wont anywhere.

walk into a final with over 100 percent. He gives extra credit to everyone on the test. extra credit on the project enough to boost test scores a full letter. all points cumulative. Lots of terminology on the test. Programming is straight forward and easy. If you master the definitions, you should get an A.

This professor sucks. He teaches PowerPoint style, but his slides are pathetic and useless. Lab is alright and okay easy. Do the extra credit for the project too. Don't bother going to office hours because he will tell you to look at the slides. Test is all memorization, find someone's past exams and study that, his study guides are useless.

I took Cook for intro to computer architecture. This is the first "theory" class that we take. Overall, the class was fun and the exams were fair. If you don't bother to learn the concepts, don't complain that you didn't do well on the exams! RIP all those poor little Goombas! (running joke this year).

Cook's class is taught by power point and examples done right in front of you. The lab is were you are really going to get the material down though. Tests are concepts and vocab from the powerpoint slides, as well as coding questions based off of what you learnt in lab. My advice is to take his powerpoint slides serious and know the labs very well

As a person, Cook is awesome. As a professor, not so much. He's doesn't give much prior notice for midterms or projects, only letting classes know like 4 days in advance, and sometimes, depending on temperament, he simply refuses to answer student questions. That being said, if you are good at memorizing a lot of info, you'll do fine in the class.

His jokes make him a bit quirky, but other than that, he's a solid choice. My only complaints are that he should have given more assignments to raise some people's grades up. He posts his powerpoint slides online after he's done lecturing them. Though it doesn't mean you should skip class. You would need to attend class to understand the material.

This professor is the worst professor in teaching, but he makes the concepts easy to understand. Exams are relatively easy, a lot of stuff to memorize too. Two exams and one cumulative final. Take him in the spring because he is usually the only professor that teaches that semester. Easier than the rest of the CSC 28 professors.

He goes off on tangents that take up at least 40% of class time. So if you want to learn something good luck. His study guides are useless because they are very vague and half the stuff that's on there he doesn't even put on the test. Your best bet is to study your labs. AVOID HIM AT ALL COST

He's nice and all but he grade really tough on exams. Study guide is near useless. There are no hw or quizzes. Two exams and final. You'll be writing a lot of codes on the exams which is huge portion of points, so get familiar with those

Cook is a chill, caring, and funny teacher. The class is very test heavy (2 midterms and a final) with a couple of projects on the side. A good amount of extra credit is available for these projects. Labs aren't bad. He grades pretty hard on the tests (If you miss a period in a command, mark down) so you need to really know your code from the labs.

Professor Cook's a good choice, but really study the class notes he posts hours after he lectures them. Do as much of the requirements for the projects, etc. as possible, if not all of them and the extra credit offered. Overall, Cook's a professor who tries his best to get his students engaged in assembly and CS in general.

He is pretty good but things i disliked about him was; he hardly replies to emails (since i have social anxiety this is always easier for me), his powerpoints are a bit hard to understand at times so if anything you gotta go look up the things you don't get on google, he is a dad joke kinda guy; idk he is p good but just needs some work. Show up to class, don't need to take notes. He doesn't reply to his email very often or at all so just show to the lab and ask questions there. There is NO HOMEWORK, so the labs and exams are the only thing you will be graded for. Just be ready for that. Be prepared for random tangents in class about non-class related stuff (rick and morty).

The professor's teaching abilities are alright; he sometimes gets off-topic, but he knows what he is teaching and may even add history, which may or may not be related to the topic. He does not allow electronics during lectures, so being one who favors taking online notes, I was annoyed, but he does post the lecture slides online.

Great instructor, labs are fairy easy if you pay attention in lecture. The lecture slides are very helpful for both the exams and the labs. The only comment I want to make for improvement is he should consider adding a textbook for this course so we have an extra resource to understand the assembly concepts.

I want to say I love professor Cook, probably my favorite teacher ever. He was clear with the material and was fun to listen to. Well versed in what some would call "nerd culture" and I loved every second of it. Now for the more critical, nothing was graded, he had two midterms (15% each) graded but that's it so I had zero idea of my standing.

Professor Cook can go on short to long tangents about things mostly unrelated to class, which some students complain about. However, he generally teaches well and he posts his lectures online after class. The class has a few short homework assignments, 2 midterms, and a final. He does curve exams when the class does poorly.

Overall a solid teacher. He goes off on tangents and cracks nerdy jokes - a few in bad taste (Politically charged or "Not C"). He presents the material in a straightforward manner and posts PDFs of his lectures in lieu of a textbook. 2 midterms & a final. Less than a handful of assignments that he waits until the after the final to post scores for.

Second time taking cook. His classes aren't easy, but they're not overly hard either. Cook is great because he can make a class like algorithm analysis not boring. He makes the information easy to remember and keeps you engaged. Attendance isnt mandatory but slides can be hard to understand if you didn't attend lecture. Had to use webcam for final.

If you ever wanted a teacher to just tell you to look at the lecture notes now is your chance. Not only did he not answer any of my questions this entire year but both the midterm and final are littered with questions that just waste your time. He does not all you to go back to previous problems. Leaving you unaware how much time you actually have

Definitely not an easy A professor but he teaches solidly. His lectures are filled with jokes and he's extremely approachable even online. The only caveats I had were that you couldn't go back on previous exam questions, and sometimes his lectures moved too fast. The labs are free points with some extra cred added in and EVERYTHING is in the notes.

He's an ok prof if you know the topic but if you don't,be ready to teach yourself. He has a nice sense of humor but his teaching style is way off. 7 labs with little to no prep so you just gotta figure that out yourself, difficult project and exams. His grading and reqs are tough. Overall ok since there's not much of a choice for this class

Cook is a solid choice for any CSC courses, though if you didn't take him for previous courses like CSC15 or 20, you may struggle a bit since his assignments assume you understand his material from previous courses. 5-6 assignments and two exams. Exams are fair. His nerdy engagement with students eliminates the boredom that comes with some topics.

Devin made the class enjoyable and fun during a semester in which I was depressed and angry. I'd give him 10 stars if I could. His lectures are fun, the information he teaches is interesting, and his methods are engaging. He made Assembly enjoyable. 10000/10 would take again. Tip: Beware of the red-clothed man.

Midterms and final is heavily graded. Not enough time to finish exams and his vocabulary in exams is very confusing. Only a few assignments are also very confusing. Questions he does not want to answer will be ignored totally. Does not want to help students.

Midterm and final are about 80% of your grade. If you bomb one test your pretty much screwed for the semester. There was only about 4 assignments the semester. This dude loves to talk also. Test are hard and have about 8 choices each so your chances can be slim of getting the right answer. Not worth taking at all. DO not take.

Even though this teacher has probably the best sense of humor in the University, this class was not without its MAJOR faults. For one, he gives VERY few assignments, and the tests are so hard that you cannot go back to one question. Plus he slacks on grading the assignments, and does not bother to manually grade the exams. Get help from classmates.

Professor Cook is a nice man, however, he does not have a grading rubric to determine what your grade is so you don't know what u have until you receive your final grade. You only have about 6-8 lab assignments & 3 exams. If you fail one exam, you're done for. Get help from tutors bc he assumes you know and understand everything. Take Notes!!

For CSC 35 his class is do-able and teaches great with examples. However, 130 you should avoid him at all costs. 3 assignments graded last minute. D+ class average Midterms, D average class lab assignments, no extra credit, tough grading, PowerPoint heavy, doesn't like to respond to emails.

Would've given a 0, but RMP doesn't have this option. Worst CSC professor @ CSUS. Ignores students' emails. Doesn't post assignments' due dates. Doesn't allow students to correct assignments & resubmit for extra points. On exams, he has removed the ability for students to go back & make corrections on previous questions. Inaccessible & non-caring.

December 8th was the last day of class, he has just begun grading all of our assignments today, December 9th. I feel like he does this because he wouldn't be able to answer questions his students have about the homework, so he waits until finals to grade everything. Everyone is in a panic because the average on HW's is a 30/100 and tests is 51/100.

He presents his slideshows as if he doesn't know what's written on them. He is hopelessly & utterly incapable of answering any questions relating to code. How can you teach a course about algorithms & expect your students to code them properly when you yourself cannot demonstrate that you understand how the code behind them works?

Im not sure how this teacher has a 4/5 rating. I would give him a 0/5 if I could. Test are worth 80% of your grade. Tests are super hard with a lot of fill in blank and questions have 4 - 8 choices to choose from. There were probably 10 people that made it through out of 40. Nice guy but makes it almost impossible to pass. Not worth taking.

We had 3 assignments worth 10% each, but they were not graded until the week before finals. The 2 midterms (20% each) had around 35 questions with a few joke questions mixed in worth no points. There is no going back to check your answer if you take this class online. The multiple choice questions were always worded weirdly.

Solid 3, 130 was difficult. Assignments were very hard if you do not have a strong coding background. He is open to office hours and very helpful if you know what you are talking about, if you don't he doesn't help much. Tests are difficul and require full mastery of PowerPoint heavy topics. You would probably need to put extra time in this class.

Professor Cook was a cool guy and had a great sense of humor, the lectures and material explained most things well and were readily available. The only thing I disliked was the fact that we couldn't go back to previous questions on exams, which did cost me a few points (speaking of exams, be sure to study thoroughly for them).

expects you to understand everything that comes out of his mouth without taking notes as he goes extremely fast. he changes PowerPoints like a blink of the eye, asks you to study from his notes which he posts after 2-3 weeks when he has gone over the material. Doesn't care if you understand. Thinks he's the smartest of all! Seriously Terrible!!!

You don't have to take notes as he just goes through the powerpoint and posts it later that week. Test aren't too hard. He gives you a study guide on what to know for the test and if you study that, you are good. Only thing I hate is that he doesn't use canvas, so you dont know your grade except for when he gives you a progress report after 2 exams

Devin Cook's class is completely hard for no reason. The labs are easy, but the tests are sooo confusing and not relatable to any of the lectures. I would really recommend you to find this class at a another school to finish the credits over summer so that way you dont have to deal with this horrendous class. Literally a 1/10

His lectures cover 80% of what you need to study, the other 20% is learning some of the concepts more in depth. Leetcode practice some of the concepts you go over and try your best to understand the notes. This class is test heavy (Summer 2022). People will tell you he's hard but this is basically a weed out class. Takes a lot of independent study

He is nice and caring to the students. He answers questions on the lab so it makes lab easy to finish. Powerpoints are somewhat throughful but he does not give so much example questions on the exam, only have powerpoint to study. the exam is not bad and he gives 50pts extra credit on the project. Funny, smart, nerdy and a kind person. I loved the class, it was full of information and he gave real life applications of every concept so you're not just blindly memorizing. This class enhances your understanding of computers, mainly because of him. He's experienced& a wealth of knowledge. Take Cook if you desire to learn and better yourself.

I had Professor Cook for csc28 and csc35. I always enjoyed going to class even though it was early in the morning. He makes an effort to make the concepts applicable to real life. He also adds his personality into lectures/labs so it's not as monotonous as many if the other csc classes ive taken here. Exams and labs are clear, just study slides.

Professor has great lectures with accompanying slides, which are available on his website. Assignments were straightforward. Exams were tough, but if you study, you'll do fine. Unfortunately, he'll go a little too off-topic and he doesn't use Canvas, meaning you have to wait for him to hand out grades in class. Otherwise, I'd recommend taking him!

What you see from lecture powerpoints is what the exam will be. He's very straightforward, and no coding on exams...for the assignments, which were 4, you'll have to code, which is ok. He's organized with lectures and cares about his students.

I had him for 35 during the summer session. He uses his own slides and website to teach the material. Labs are pretty easy. Exams can be difficult. There's a lot of memorization in this class and understanding of topics. Definitely took time outside of the class to study. But overall, good class and good guy. He's pretty funny and nerdy too.

I took this class during the summer so he could act differently during the year but his class was pretty straightforward: Take notes, do the lab, do the exam. There is no real room for extra credit or half-credit on assignments, so you have to get everything right the first time. He would also talk too much about random useless topics sometimes.

The professor was fairly easy. If you attend his class and do all your Lab on time you will at least pass the course. There was no project in summer class. He goes off-topic often but you can still enjoy his lecture and understand. If you understand his lecture then exams will also be easy the exams are completely from the PowerPoint slides.

Tries to be the cool professor, fails at it in every way. You will never know your grade in the course. Doesn't give your grade on labs until the middle of the semester. Slides are very helpful, breaking down the algorithms in detail. It really creates a visual in your mind. My issue was his grading system. We didn't get our grades (which are on paper) until the thursday before finals, which coincidentally was the day of the CFA strike, so to know our grade, we were forced to cross the picket line.

I like the way he teaches. I took him in the Summer for Csc35 and this term for Csc130. I never missed his class so I actually enjoy attending his lecture and also will help you during office hours. So one one point is he grades everything like assignments at last so most of the term you are unknown to grades but would prefer to take his class.

He'll give you a paper progress report after the midterm and after the final. 8 labs, 2 midterms, Final and Project that will save your grade because of possible extra credit. Don't copy code on the project. Lots of people got caught and got a 0.

The lectures were very useful, especially with things that are better explained visually, but if you aren't great at tests I wouldn't really recommend as there are 2 midterms, a final, but there are a couple of coding assignments. He includes interesting facts and fun videos and sometimes goes off-topic.

Not sure why he has a high rating. Yes, he is a fun professor and makes lectures fun but his grading is so bad. He doesn't use canvas at all. You get your grade on a piece of paper and your basically clueless of your grade the whole semester. His tests are way too long and so much material that is so hard to handle.

Took his class a year ago and is a fun professor but does go on A LOT of tangents. He doesn't use Canvas so you don't know your grade until after the midterms. I would write down the example code he would give during the lecture and it makes the labs a slam dunk. His exams are difficult which involves you memorizing and studying his lecture slides.

Week 12, grade: C+ Prof Cook OFTEN goes off topic via random stories + being a bit of a nerd. Slides are difficult to understand if you look at it by yourself. Labs are fairly easy but there are 1 or 2 that stumps you. Exams are harshly graded. One wrong line or # and you get a 0 for that question. Very unforgiving. Doesn't allow discord servers.

Professor Cook is hands-down one of my favorite professors at Sac State. His style seems to be hit or miss. He tries to make the class fun by relating material to video games and pop culture. He's constantly cracking jokes and goes off on tangents, which gives some students greater context for the material. For slightly less goofy, take Sabzevary.

Devin is relentless with grading, so prepare for the worst in his exams. The labs are a cakewalk in comparison. Class is weighed heavily on exam results. He will pop quiz when he chooses, so show up to class. My best advice is to sift through his inane blabbering and pay close attention to vocabulary, study the labs, and assembly x86 registers.

If you don't closely study his lecture slides you will not pass his class. His labs are the easiest thing in the class. Attendance isn't required but will drop a pop quiz whenever he wants and mostly when a lot of people are absent. There is also a chance he gives extra credit if not enough people show up to class just to spite the others.

During this semester, we had 7/8 labs that were pretty easy. Despite doing so well on my labs, I ended off with a bad grade because the assignments were very exam heavy. 1 final and 2 midterms (+1 popquiz). Professor Cook is kind of cringe, always trying to be the class clown. His lectures are barely understandable, though is labs are easy to do if you paid attention. His study guides are complete trash and will not help you on the exams, STUDY EVERYTHING. He doesn't use canvas and doesn't reply to emails. Exams will definitely bring you down.

Unfortunately, he's the only professor who teaches this required course. Classes are decent since it's mostly notes, but everything must be taken to heart. Midterms and the final are tough (no cheat sheets). He knows several students fail, so we're not allowed to use past work. He grades really tough, so expect to lose a lot of points on exams.

He's one of those professors who has their own personal site instead of Canvas. This also means your grades aren't easily visible, which can cause a lot of pressure. Some people just shouldn't be professors, man. I get my grade back the day of the final, and I aced 2 tests and still got a 65% (before the final) because of how few lab assignments there were. Tell me how that's fair? Consistently the most annoying "How do you do fellow kids" type humor too. Take this guy for CSC 35 and avoid him everywhere else.

Some people aren't meant to be professors and Cook is one of them. Promised us grade checks, but only offered it once in the middle of the semester and one AFTER our finals. Like how is the one after our finals suppose to help us? "Study Guides" are a joke. Grades are heavily relied on the midterms and the final. Try your best to avoid Cook.

The professor Cook often read directly from slides and didn't engage with students during class. Assignments were graded with little feedback, making it hard to improve. Communication was slow, and office hours were rarely helpful. He is HARD grader. Exams do match with the course materials. I do not recommend Cook for any student,Try to avoid him.

I followed the criteria for the few assignments he assigned, and when I got my transcript back for the class it showed the project I worked HOURS UPON HOURS on only received 10% credit. I looked to my friend who followed a similar format to me and he got a lot more credit than I did. The grading is very randomized and your work has to be perfect.

Taken over the summer... Took his CSC 35 class over the summer. Very chill and entertaining professor who makes class interesting, while also being able to properly explain and teach. Labs are fun and flexible. The only complaint is that there was material covered in the midterm that wasn't being taught until later in the semester.

I've taken him before, and knew what I was getting into, but this class was just awful. I'd say avoid him if u can but prof Cook is one of those profs you can't really avoid. Doesn't use canvas so you wont know ur grade until mid / end of semester and if he makes a grading mistake, he won't fix it. Office hrs aren't really helpful either. The "study guides" will NOT help you. His exams are so inconsistent when it comes to definitions and terms. Exams will ask you the hyper-specific details that you better hope you stored into your own memory register. Labs are OK, but he needs to actually use Canvas.
